00:00Insects were harmed in the making of this program, and that none of the training you're about to see be
00:04attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:07Eight braineese, one challenge. To use complex mass of 100 billion cells, we call the Brain, for chance to win
00:15Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:17This is Brain Jitsu.
00:26Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind-sharp as samurai sword, he is Brain Master. He is the Sensei.
00:36Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jitsu. Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:46My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:52A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:01The training's really helped me, and, well, it just gave me a bit more confidence and stuff.
01:06After you play a computer game, you feel a bit numb, your brain feels a bit numb, but after this,
01:11it sort of felt the opposite, but felt a bit more clear.
01:13I really, really, really, really, really, really want that back then.
01:16I think I'm going to win, definitely, because, erm, I'm, like, the best out of all of them.
01:23Now my braineese must put their training into practice by testing the part of the brain we use every day.
01:29Level one. You're no fault!
01:33Take a look at this fish tank. How many white fish are there?
01:39Now, did you get two?
01:41Congratulations! You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:46This area, the same part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:54The seven braineese who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where
02:00their training will continue.
02:02The one who fails will be left outside.
02:05Oh! Feel the burn.
02:08Enter the dojo!
02:11Our braineese must answer four questions by searching the different team kits on the board in front of them.
02:17Get the questions right, and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock
02:22a piece of brain, and secure their place in the dojo.
02:26But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese, one of either Maya, Michael, Zia, Tushaya, Shahad, Sterling, Gwen,
02:37or Jack, will be left outside and eliminated.
02:42You could hear a grain of rice drop as the four questions are revealed.
02:47How many players have a black kit?
02:53How many have non-matching shorts and shirt?
03:02How many players have blue in their kit?
03:11How many players have red in their kit?
03:16The answer our braineese are looking for is three, six, seven, eight.
03:25Sterling and Maya reckon they've cracked the code already, but have they jumped too soon?
03:30Faster than you can say foam-filled futons, the rest of our braineese join them.
03:34All except Tushaya, who's still stuck at the noodle bar.
03:43And it's Zia, who's first to unlock a piece of brain, quickly followed by Michael and Jack.
03:52Don't forget, the code of braineese they're searching for is three, six, seven, eight, as there are three players with
03:59black kit, six with non-matching shorts and shirt, seven with blue in their kit, and eight with red in
04:05their kit.
04:07Which means Maya still hasn't got the right code.
04:10Come on, Maya, work those occipital lobes.
04:15At last, Sterling unlocks a piece of brain, with Gwen hot on his heels.
04:21It's now a three-way contest between Tushaya, Maya and Shahad for those final two places in the dojo.
04:29Keeping her cool, confident Shahad plops open her lock.
04:34With Tushaya now working on the last piece of brain, there's nothing Maya can do but wait for a chance.
04:42But Tushaya's lock springs open, and Maya's last hope of entering the dojo is gone.
04:52So while seven have proved themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training, for Maya, it's the
04:58end of the road.
05:01I'm feeling really disappointed that I haven't got into the dojo, because I think I shouldn't have rushed.
05:07I feel gutted.
05:10So, with six levels to go, it's Zia, Michael, Jack, Sterling, Gwen, Shahad and Tushaya, who received the first of
05:18their coloured brain belts.
05:22I feel really good. I think the training that I did at home helped me.
05:26I just focused on one thing and came first, and that was quite fun.
05:31I feel really relieved, because that was actually quite hard.
05:35I kept on trying to unlock the padlock, but I just wouldn't undo.
05:37It was a tough challenge. I had to go back at least four times to get the lock undone.
05:43Win it. Come on. Let's win it.
05:47Rain Titu.
05:49In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
05:54Level two.
05:56Orange of all.
05:58We do things every day without even thinking about it, like kicking a football.
06:04But you try kicking it with the foot you don't normally use.
06:08Not easy, is it?
06:12If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving, the frontal lobes.
06:18And that's what level two is all about.
06:22Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:26Work it.
06:27To prepare their frontal lobes for the next challenge, our brainees are going to need some training.
06:38This is the room of mental nourishment, where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
06:44While there's nothing to stop our brainees from kicking back and helping themselves to some of the tempting treats on
06:50offer,
06:50the more seriously they take their training, the more seriously they take their training, the better prepared they'll be for
06:54the challenges that lie ahead.
06:58And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
07:04Take turns to call out the action on your cards.
07:07Everyone must do it only when you say, sensei says.
07:12So, our brainees are going to be made to think about something, like following simple instructions, that they'd normally do
07:19without thinking.
07:21Sensei says, both palms down.
07:25Spin around clockwise.
07:28Ooh!
07:30I didn't say sensei says.
07:33Be silent.
07:36Well done, Sterling.
07:37Glad to see that someone's paying attention.
07:39That's right, son, you took into those custard cranes.
07:42You've earned them.
07:45Touch left shoulder.
07:49Time for a training tip.
07:53Don't rush.
07:54Pause for two seconds to think before you react.
07:57You see, spending a moment to think before rushing in really can improve your all-round focus.
08:03Sensei says, touch nose with the left hand.
08:06There's no fooling too shy, yeah?
08:09Sensei says, look sad.
08:13But Shahad's finding it all a bit of a struggle.
08:15I messed up quite a lot.
08:17I found it hard because I wasn't thinking, I just did the action straight away.
08:24So, will Shahad remember to stop and think?
08:27And will happy-go-lucky Sterling be able to maintain his impressive focus?
08:33Time to find out, as our seven now put their frontal lobe train into the test.
08:39Guardian of the dojo and task adjudicator, the She-Han, will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:46Big bone collard match.
08:49Each brainy must pick two balls by calling out pair of coordinates from grid.
08:55For example, B2 and D3.
08:59Aim is to find two balls of same color, matching not word on each ball, but color that word is
09:06written in.
09:06So, in this case, they will have to remember that this ball was red and this one blue.
09:12If brainy's uncover match, they will progress to next level.
09:16Last brainy to find pair will be eliminated.
09:19My brainy tip for this task is to focus the mind on just one letter and not the whole word.
09:25What's important here is not the word, but the color that it's written in.
09:32Here are those colors now.
09:38Three, two, one.
09:41It's go on the gong.
09:44A one.
09:44Remember, our brainy's must ignore the word and focus only on the color it's written in,
09:49which means Zia's now looking for another green ball.
09:53Instead, he finds orange.
09:56Will he remember for the next time?
10:00A three.
10:05Um, A one.
10:07Michael seems to have forgotten that Zia has only just picked A one,
10:12and that it most definitely wasn't black.
10:15It's a bad start for the boys, as Jack also misses out on a pair.
10:19It looks as though they've completely forgotten their training.
10:22Can happy-go-lucky Sterling restore some male pride?
10:27One C.
10:31And four B.
10:36Great balls of focus.
10:38Sterling finds the first pair, despite all those gust of creams.
10:45It's now Gwen's turn.
10:47A two.
10:48Will she remember her training and get her brain focusing just on those colors?
10:53A three.
10:57Gwen nails it.
10:58And just look at the pressure beginning to show on Shahad.
11:02C two.
11:06D three.
11:11With confident Shahad drawing a blank, it's now Tushaya's turn.
11:15C three.
11:15Will she remember her training and keep that brain in reverse gear?
11:19A one.
11:24With two green balls in the bag, Tushaya becomes the third brainy to advance to the next level.
11:30B one.
11:35C four.
11:38And there are no problems either this time for Michael.
11:43Or Shahad, who also go through, leaving Zia and Jack to fight it out for the last remaining orange belt.
11:51With just four balls to choose from, it's Zia to pick next.
11:55C two.
12:00B three.
12:06But yet again, Zia can't get his head round this back-to-front thinking lark, leaving the door wide open
12:11for Jack.
12:13B two.
12:17B three.
12:22Suffering sumos.
12:23With the next level at his mercy, Jack gets his brain in a right-all twist.
12:28Will Zia grab this second chance?
12:31B three.
12:33B four.
12:38He does, bringing Jack's journey to mental mastery to an abrupt end.
12:43There's nothing for it but to hand over his yellow brain belt and leave the dojo.
12:53Walk of eternal regret.
12:57The training beforehand helped.
12:59I think I got a bit distracted at the end because it was very tense and it was confusing.
13:04Oh well.
13:06I hope the others enjoy it.
13:08I'm out.
13:10So, with five levels left, it's Zia, Michael, Sterling, Gwen, Shahad and Tushaya who get their orange brain belts.
13:19I feel really happy because I just went for it and I got it.
13:22The training helped me because it helped me to concentrate on what I was saying and what I was doing.
13:26I'm relieved, but I sort of hope that I can do better in the next task.
13:35Brainy, not so brainy.
13:43Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:47It's the 1870s and a geezer called Alexander Graham Bell goes and prevents the old dog and bone or telephone.
13:53So you and I can gossip, gasp and natter to people all over the world.
13:57Telephone-tastic.
13:58Hello?
13:59Mum, I'm on the telly.
14:00I'll call you back.
14:01Where was I?
14:02Oh yeah, phones.
14:03Off to Finland.
14:04Every year, a load of Finns and folks from all over the world take part in the Mobile Phone Throwing
14:09World Championships.
14:10Why?
14:11Well, to see how far they can throw them, of course.
14:13Right, got to ring the old dear back.
14:15Brainy, Alexander Graham Bell.
14:17Not so brainy, phone flingers in Finland.
14:21Brain Jitsu.
14:24Competition in Brain Jitsu Dojo hotting up.
14:27Only six brainy remain to battle out on the watchful eye of Shihan.
14:32Sia, first into dojo and nearly first out.
14:36Wen, who perform well in each level.
14:40Confident Shahad.
14:41I think I'm going to win, definitely.
14:43Nice cool Michael.
14:44I really, really, really, really, really want that bad man.
14:47Tushaya, who is just scrapping to dojo.
14:49And Sterling, custard cream kid.
14:52I feel really happy because I just went for it and I got it.
14:55Challenge is about to get even tougher.
14:58Only two brainy will make through to final test.
15:00Table of Supreme Folkers.
15:03Where must move ball with power of mind for chance to win.
15:07Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
15:09It's time for...
15:11Level 3.
15:13Wizard.
15:15Now, we all like to chat.
15:17But did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown
15:23so incredibly powerful?
15:25And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
15:29Now, if all that's doing you're heading, allow me to explain.
15:34Think of it like air traffic control.
15:36While a pilot has to focus on landing just one plane, an air traffic controller is responsible for landing all
15:44sorts of planes.
15:44It's the same with the brain.
15:47There's the left half, which deals with the details.
15:49And there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
15:53This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:01Hey, pump it up!
16:02The Room of Mental Nourishment.
16:06It's our brainy's second visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, where once again they'll train their brains in preparation
16:13for the next challenge.
16:14Now, remember, it's all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate.
16:20Brain training.
16:22Get into two groups.
16:23One brainy describes how the blocks fit together.
16:27The other group puts them together.
16:29So, for this training session, our brainy's are in two teams, but have to work as one.
16:35The key is to communicate clearly.
16:37Talk one at a time and listen to each other.
16:39We're all one at the...
16:40Yeah?
16:41We're all together.
16:42We're going together.
16:43Do an extra...
16:43Don't...
16:44Don't...
16:44Don't...
16:44Don't...
16:45Don't...
16:45Don't...
16:46Red score.
16:47Red square.
16:48As the team explaining how to put the blocks together, the girls seem more focused on shouting over each other,
16:54rather than making themselves clearly understood.
16:56Yes!
16:57No!
16:58Look, one, two...
16:59Oh, this is more like karaoke than communication.
17:03Time for a training tip.
17:07Use short, clear instructions.
17:09Imagine yourself hearing them.
17:11And don't all speak at the same time.
17:14Our brainy's begin again.
17:16And this time, at least the girls are now speaking one at a time.
17:19There's a blue for a long one, yeah?
17:22Yeah.
17:22And there's a red for a long one.
17:24Yeah.
17:25Put them next to each other.
17:26So there's eight in a row?
17:27No.
17:28No.
17:28But their message still isn't getting across.
17:30Whatever girls need to do is imagine what information the boys need.
17:34Because getting the most out of the right side of the brain means putting yourself in someone else's shoes.
17:39This is a red square.
17:41Try practising this next time you have a conversation with a friend, in the knowledge that your brain will be
17:46getting a good workout.
18:17Then on the other side, there's another blue for...
18:17Should it go?
18:19Should it go?
18:19And they managed to explain it so that we could understand as well.
18:22So, will our brainy's remember that communication is all about clarity?
18:27Or will they forget all that they've learnt?
18:30Time to find out as they now put their train into the test for those five green brain belts.
18:39Balloon pop!
18:40Balloon pop!
18:40Number drop!
19:04Balloon pop!
19:05Number drop!
19:06Balloon pop!
19:06Balloon pop!
19:07Balloon pop!
19:11Balloon pop!
19:13Balloon pop!
19:15Balloon pop!
19:16Balloon pop!
19:18Balloon pop!
19:18Balloon pop!
19:18Balloon pop!
19:18Balloon pop!
19:18Balloon pop!
19:18Balloon pop!
19:20Balloon pop!
19:20Balloon pop!
19:22Balloon pop!
19:23Balloon pop!
19:24Balloon pop!
19:25Balloon pop!
19:25Balloon pop!
19:28Balloon pop!
19:30Balloon pop!
19:34Balloon pop!
19:36Brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
19:40The key to success here is for the guider to use the right side of their brain
19:45to follow their teammates' progress and give them clear instructions.
19:49For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain
19:54to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
19:59First to put their communication training to the test are Shahad and Zia.
20:03Jump.
20:06Now what?
20:07Now go forward two steps, pretty small steps.
20:10Confident as ever, Shahad takes control, using the right side of her brain well.
20:15To the left, now jump.
20:18One more.
20:19Jump.
20:21Brain jutsu!
20:22Their last balloon popped, Shahad stops the clock at 1 minute 31 seconds.
20:27It looks like her training has paid off.
20:30It's now Gwen and Sterling's turn.
20:34Both performed well in their training, and like Shahad before her, it's Gwen who's doing the guiding.
20:42Go forward.
20:43Jump.
20:44Back a bit.
20:45Jump.
20:48Left.
20:49Jump.
20:50Brain jutsu.
20:53Popping all their balloons in just 1 minute 14 seconds, it's an impressive display of communication from the duo.
21:00Last to pop are Tushaya and Michael.
21:03And walk forwards.
21:04And like the other girls, it's Tushaya who's using the right side of her brain to guide her partner.
21:10Right.
21:11Back.
21:12Jump.
21:13Forwards.
21:15Jump.
21:16Back.
21:18Jump.
21:19As speedy as a samurai on skates, Tushaya and Michael pop their 6th and last balloon in an incredible 1
21:26minute and 2 seconds.
21:30As the fastest team, it's Tushaya and Michael who set off first to find their numbers.
21:40That's four.
21:41Here.
21:42Here's what our brainies are looking for.
21:44See if you can work out the sum.
21:48Remember, the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level.
21:57It's Gwen and Sterling who are quickest to their gong, just ahead of Tushaya and Michael, with Shahad and Zia
22:03bringing up the rear.
22:068 times 2 minus 11 equals 5.
22:09That looks good to me.
22:10More importantly, the She-Han agrees.
22:15In fact, all three teams have found the correct solution.
22:19So, as the last to finish, it's Shahad and Zia who'll be battling it out to avoid elimination in the...
22:27Step off.
22:30With just one green belt up for grabs, both brainies must use all their powers of focus to fight the
22:35urge to blink.
22:36The first to falter will be eliminated.
22:40As wide-eyed as a pair of manga cartoons, our two brainies are refusing to give way.
22:47But eventually, it's Zia who can fight the urge no longer.
22:52While confident Shahad's staring skills have brought her a step closer to that elusive black belt, the only thing Zia
22:58is now staring at is elimination.
23:03Walk of eternal regret.
23:06I thought we did all right after we popped the balloon, but then we saw that other people go there
23:12a lot faster.
23:13I thought we could still win if we managed to get the numbers quickly enough.
23:17I'm not usually very good at a stare-ass. I usually blink a lot, so, um, 3-1.
23:24So, with four levels to go, it's Michael, Sterling, Gwen, Shahad and Tushaya who line up for their green belts.
23:31Working with Sterling was actually quite, it was easier than I thought it would be.
23:36He was really fast and he listened really well.
23:39Gwen was giving me excellent instructions, but when I was jumping it just didn't pop, so I was just like
23:44bouncing up and down and it wouldn't pop.
23:46When we went to the stare-off, that was the moment when I really thought, doubt myself, I was like,
23:51I'm not going to win.
23:54Brain T2!
23:58Level 4. Move out!
24:01This fourth level requires our brainees to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala, the area that
24:09responds to threat.
24:14Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky? Maybe you were just about to sit an exam.
24:19Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
24:24Now, stress can make you lose focus. Fact.
24:28Which is why my brainees must train to keep their emotions under control.
24:33The Room of Mental Nourishment.
24:37Back in the Room of Mental Nourishment, it's time for our five brainees to train in how to overcome fear
24:43and stay focused.
24:46Form a circle, pass the disgusting drink around the circle, only passing it on when you have said the name
24:53of a different animal.
24:55After one minute, the brainee holding the drink has to drink it.
25:00Oh, no.
25:01So, our brainees must block out the fact that they might get a mouthful of seaweed and concentrate only on
25:07coming up with the name of an animal.
25:09Yeah, it's strawberry jelly.
25:11Oh, my God.
25:12Let's get on with it.
25:13It's time to train.
25:15Tiger.
25:18Chinchilla.
25:20Monkey.
25:22Giraffe.
25:24Parrot.
25:27Um.
25:28Dog.
25:29Um.
25:30And, uh, uh, uh, uh.
25:31As the clock ticks down, our brainees are beginning to hesitate.
25:36Leopard.
25:37Mice.
25:38Um.
25:40Worm.
25:41The minute's up and it's Shahad who's left holding the drink.
25:45Come on, Shahad.
25:45Down the hatch.
25:46Ah.
25:48Ah.
25:51Are you going to be sick?
25:52Time for a tip.
25:55Concentrate.
25:56Try to blank out the time and fear of the drink to avoid panicking.
25:59Go on.
26:00Stingrove.
26:01Mouse.
26:03Rat.
26:03Cat.
26:04The tip's still fresh in our minds.
26:06Our brainees are making a much better fist of things, calling out one animal after another.
26:10Mouse.
26:13Platypus.
26:14Goldfish.
26:15Centipede.
26:17Millipede.
26:17Next time you're feeling the pressure, say, in the middle of a test, try not to worry
26:21about the time.
26:22The chances are you'll stay much more focused.
26:27Worm.
26:28Tony poo.
26:30The gong sounds for a second time and it's Michael who's left holding the drink of stink.
26:35It's really nice, isn't it?
26:36One, two, three, two, one.
26:40Ah.
26:41You're horrible.
26:41He actually likes it.
26:43But as cool as a cucumber in a cold store, Michael knocks it back.
26:47Horrible.
26:47Wow, this made me feel awful.
26:49He didn't actually think before you said something.
26:52He just wanted to say something really quickly so you just passed the drink on.
26:56No, it's fine.
26:57It's only seaweed.
26:58The tip was a really good advice and gain confidence.
27:01I think probably the next task is going to be something to do with disgusting things
27:06or eating something.
27:07But I guess I've just got to win that black belt so I've got to do it.
27:12So, will Shahad ever get over the taste of that seaweed?
27:16Will ice-cool Michael be just as calm when he re-enters the dojo?
27:20And will happy-go-lucky Sterling take another step towards that black belt?
27:25It's time to find out as our five put their brain train into the test in a fear-filled challenge
27:30that will decide who gets their blue brain belt.
27:36Creepy Crawly Word Grab.
27:38This level real test of mind over matter for brainies and will push them to really overcome their fear.
27:45Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
27:49Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters each.
27:55They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
28:01To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore the creepy crawlies.
28:09The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters.
28:25Underneath this pile of yucky worms are an extra five golden letters.
28:29If our brainies manage to use one in their word, they'll double their score.
28:36Our brainies dive straight in, but Tushaya seems more intense on flapping her arms about in the air than hunting
28:43for any letters, completely forgetting her training.
28:47Michael, on the other hand, seems to be calmly going about his business, just as he did during his training.
28:54Sterling's tactic appears to involve barging Gwen out the way. I'm not sure that's in the rule book.
29:02And if Shahad's feeling anxious, then she's certainly not showing it.
29:13The minute's up. Our brainies now have a further minute to make the highest scoring word they can from their
29:18letters.
29:23Sterling has found one of the golden letters, but will he be able to use it and double his score?
29:28Gwen has also grabbed herself a golden letter, but not a lot else by the looks of things.
29:34See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now.
29:45There's the second gong. How have our brainies done?
29:51Heath.
29:52With a golden E in his word, that's a big fat 16 points for high school, Michael.
29:58Spade.
29:59It's also double bubble for Sterling, who scores 10.
30:05No word.
30:06Gwen appears to have lost half her letter since the first gong, and with no word, scores a big fat
30:12zero.
30:13Bait.
30:14A quick check in the dictionary, and it's six points for confident Shahad.
30:21Teen.
30:23No doubts about Tushaya's word, which earns her 10 points.
30:28And so, as the only brainy not to make a word, it's Gwen who must leave the dojo.
30:40Walk of eternal regret.
30:43Yeah, I am quite gutted.
30:45But it was a really good experience doing all the training, and I think it will help me in other
30:51challenges.
30:52I think Shahad's a strong contender, because she really prepared herself, and also she's quite confident and brave.
31:01So, with only three levels left, those who use their minds to master the worms are rewarded with blue brain
31:08belts.
31:08When they bought the worms, I was just terrified. I was just, ugh.
31:15It was funny watching everyone else panic, because they didn't like the worms, because they're a bit squeamish.
31:23Brain T2.
31:27Brainy, not so brainy.
31:30Who's the clever clogs, and whose brain needs a lot more training?
31:34Picture the scene. It's 1666, and this young chap, Isaac Newton, is catching 40 winks in his orchard.
31:41When Wallop, an apple, hits him right on the nut.
31:44But Isaac doesn't just yelp and rub the large bump on his curly head.
31:48He only goes and discovers the force that keeps our feet on the ground and the earth in orbit around
31:52the sun.
31:52Namely, gravity.
31:55Appletastic.
31:56Back in ancient Greece, another young lad called Icarus is banged up in prison after doing something naughty.
32:02So he decides to escape by making a pair of giant wings from feathers and wax, and then flying out
32:07the window.
32:08But, in his excitement, this bird brain goes and flies too near the sun, thus melting the wings and dropping
32:13like a stone into the drink.
32:15Oh dear, oh dear.
32:17Brainy, Isaac Newton. Not so brainy, Icarus Thicarus.
32:22Brain T2.
32:24Tension in Brain Jutsu Dojo mounting. Just four young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of Shihan.
32:32Confident Shahad. High School Michael, winner of last challenge.
32:36It was funny watching everyone else panic.
32:38To Shia, she not like worms.
32:41And happy-go-lucky sterling.
32:43I just gotta win that black belt, so I gotta do it.
32:45Only two brainy will make final showdown.
32:48Table of supreme focus.
32:50We must move ball with power of mind.
32:53Brain Jutsu Black Brain Belt is within their grasp.
32:56It is time for...
32:58Level five.
33:00Red Belt.
33:02Now, if you're learning to climb trees like Tarzan, then you might be interested to know that your new hobby
33:08is doing wonders for the old grey matter.
33:11Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
33:17You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head, which keeps your brain cells topped up
33:24with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
33:27So, in level five, my brainy's are gonna be challenged to learn new skills.
33:33Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
33:37And this is what our brainy's are gonna train for now.
33:42The Room of Mental Nourishment.
33:45It's our brainy's fourth visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, where they'll be training their brains in how to
33:51learn new skills.
33:55Happy-go-lucky sterling reads out the card.
33:59Brain training.
34:01Flip and catch as many drinks coasters as you can.
34:05It's gonna be hard.
34:07Mm-mm. No way.
34:09We'll see.
34:18While most of our brainy's are finding this new skill harder to master than the Japanese alphabet, sterling's a natural.
34:25Oh, yes!
34:27I've got the hang of it.
34:29Now let's try four.
34:30I keep them together.
34:33Next!
34:35I can do six!
34:37No, you can't.
34:38I just did it!
34:39I can do seven!
34:42With the rest of our brainy's still struggling, it's time for a training tip.
34:46I can do five!
34:48Approach this positively.
34:50Laugh out loud for 30 seconds.
34:52How's that gonna help?
34:53Well, Shahad, you're about to find out.
34:55Cue the laughter tape.
35:01The next time you face a tough mental challenge, you try laughing as well.
35:05It might sound strange, but a fit of the giggles actually increases our heart rate, which sends extra oxygen into
35:12the brain, helping it to perform at its best.
35:16Let's see if it's worked.
35:18Oh, my God!
35:19Tushaya immediately flips a good'un.
35:21Michael also seems to be finding his training useful.
35:26Sterling, though, having already shown his flair for flipping, decides that his brain doesn't need any more training, and helps
35:32himself to attempting jellybean.
35:34What, you're too good for this game?
35:36Yeah.
35:36Obviously.
35:39It was hard when, like, we were all, we can't do it, and it's too hard, but then when we
35:44were, like, all positive...
35:45Yeah, exactly. It made it more fun, so it made us more determined.
35:50I think approaching tasks with a happy mind really helps, because there's no such word as can't in your vocabulary
35:56when you're happy, so you feel like it's fun to do it even if it's really hard.
36:01So, will buddies Tushaya and Shahad be laughing their way through to the next level?
36:06Will high school Michael still think his training useful?
36:10And will happy-go-lucky Sterling live to regret swapping his training for them jellybeans?
36:16Only time will tell, as our four now put their new skills training to the test, to compete for their
36:23red brain belts.
36:27Crazy Brain Buzzwire!
36:29To win red belt, brainy must guide hoop-on helmet from one end of wire to other.
36:35Is race against clock, but brainy must take care.
36:39If they touch wire, not only do they collect five-second penalty, they also receive brain buzz from rat-baiting
36:46helmet.
36:47Most funny! Brainy with slowest time will be eliminated.
36:52The tip for my brainy's in this next task is to remain calm and think positive thoughts.
36:59Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
37:04So, will our brainy's remember the training and stay positive, or will the pressure get to them?
37:12First off is cool, calm Michael, the brainy who found the training most helpful.
37:19But while Michael's avoiding contact with the wire, is his steady approach costing him time?
37:25Bing business.
37:37Big bang Buzzboy!
37:40BEEP!
37:41BEEP!
37:42BEEP!
37:44BEEP!
37:46BEEP!
37:53BEEP!
37:57Using some nifty footwork to keep himself steady, the answer appears to be very well.
38:06Like a bullet train in a hurry, Sterling makes light work of the task.
38:14It's now the girls' turn. Neither seemed as positive as the boys in their training.
38:19How will this affect their performance?
38:28Making more contact than a pair of sumo wrestlers she had seems oblivious to the penalties she's racking up.
38:35While her cerebrum is telling her to go fast, her cerebellum clearly can't keep up.
38:39BIRDS CHIRP
38:43BIRDS CHIRP
38:50BIRDS CHIRP
38:51BIRDS CHIRP
38:53BIRDS CHIRP
38:55BIRDS CHIRP
38:56BIRDS CHIRP
38:57BIRDS CHIRP
38:58After a nervous start, Tushaya eventually gets into the groove, finding a good balance between speed and accuracy.
39:15So, which of our brainies has found this a brain challenge too far?
39:20Despite finishing in 1 minute 7 seconds, Michael picked up 9 penalties,
39:24giving him a total time of 2 minutes and 52 seconds.
39:28With just 4 penalties, Sterling's total time was 1 minute 16.
39:33Yes!
39:34With a whopping 21 penalties, Shahad's total time was 2 minutes 35 seconds.
39:40And with 11 penalties, Tushaya's total time was 1 minute 47 seconds.
39:45So, despite swapping his training for all those jelly beans,
39:49it's Sterling's brain that has kept its focus the best.
39:53For Michael, though, it's a sad sayonara as he exits the dojo.
40:06I did find that last task quite difficult.
40:09It was difficult to translate what my brain wanted me to do into the actions.
40:17I did practice as much as possible, but I wasn't expecting that specific task.
40:22So, with 2 levels to go, that now leaves just Sterling, Shahad and Tushaya to receive their red brain belt.
40:31Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, I'm really, really, really happy that I got in,
40:37because I wasn't sure if I was going to get through or not.
40:40So, I'm really relieved, but I do feel sorry for Michael,
40:43but I think he was my best competitor.
40:46When Sheehan went up to him and she said that he's gone, I was just so shocked.
40:52I was just like, wow.
40:55Brain Jitsu!
40:59Level 6, Troll Bolt!
41:03In level 6, my brainies will draw on all they've learnt so far,
41:07in their toughest test of focus yet.
41:10That's because it's this level which will decide
41:13which two of my remaining brainies will go on to battle it out
41:17for the black belt.
41:20Now, imagine you're performing a magic trick.
41:24You've got all the secret little moves to remember,
41:26and there's an audience watching you.
41:29It's remembering stuff like this under pressure
41:31that level 6 is all about.
41:34It centres around three areas of the brain.
41:38The seeing part, the occipital lobes,
41:40the memory part, the temporal lobes,
41:43and the movement part, the cerebellum.
41:47To the max!
41:49Room of mental nourishment.
41:52Yay!
41:55Yes!
41:58Our brainies are back in the Room of Mental Nourishment,
42:01this time for some memory training.
42:05Memorise the sequence of colours.
42:07Oh, I bet you the next class is going to be
42:10something to do with memorising.
42:12Ooh, eight is as sharp as a samurai sword,
42:15is that sterling?
42:15I'm good with memory.
42:17I'm not.
42:18Come on, Tushaya, stay positive.
42:20Purple.
42:21Purple.
42:22Orange.
42:23Silver.
42:24Red.
42:24Green.
42:26Pink.
42:27Yellow.
42:28Pink.
42:28Blue.
42:29Green.
42:30Okay.
42:30Purple, orange, silver, red.
42:34Orange.
42:35No, green.
42:36Okay, Tushaya, I see what you mean.
42:39Apple, orange, silver, yellow, no, red.
42:44It looks like Sterling's memory's not up to much either.
42:46Time for a training tip.
42:50Create a song linking the colours together.
42:55Purple, orange, red and yellow and pink and green.
43:00Yeah, well, we can do it.
43:01Red and yellow and green, pink and silver.
43:04And.
43:05It may not be Mozart, but is our brain-y song
43:07helping them to remember the sequence any better?
43:10Red and yellow and green, pink.
43:13Orange.
43:13Purple.
43:14Green.
43:15Purple.
43:16Purple and pink.
43:16Silver and blue.
43:17No.
43:18And blue.
43:19As far as the girls are concerned, the answer is definitely no.
43:22What about Sterling, though?
43:23Look at it.
43:26Orange, green, purple, pink and blue.
43:29Red and yellow and green, pink and silver.
43:33Oh, oh, oh.
43:35Well done, Sterling.
43:37Top banana.
43:38Memory training like this isn't just great for the brain,
43:41it's also very useful.
43:43Try turning your school timetable into a song
43:45and see if you can remember every class.
43:47I think I have quite a good memory
43:50and I think the song definitely helped.
43:53I'm quite nervous after that because we didn't get it.
43:58We didn't get it very well.
44:00I'm going to probably be hopeless.
44:03So, will Shahad and Tushaya be able to pick themselves up
44:06in time for the next challenge?
44:09Or will happy-go-lucky Sterling's mastery of memory prove too much?
44:14It's time to find out as our three red belt holders
44:17put their training to the test.
44:21Super Memory Dizzy Dash.
44:25Each brainy is spinning round on Dizzy Wheel
44:28a total of ten times.
44:30Task is to use all power of focus
44:33to memorise five images in front of them.
44:36Then, race against clocks to cross-balancing beam
44:39and collect the same five images
44:41from ten hanging above them.
44:45Then, must arrange pictures in ascending order
44:48based on number of legs on each image.
44:52When brainy happy with selection,
44:54hit gong to top clock.
44:59My tip for the brainy's is to keep focused on the main objective
45:04and use their training to link the five images together.
45:09So, our final three brave the wheel
45:12to compete for their brown brain belt
45:14and the chance of a place at the table of supreme focus.
45:18It's time to spin.
45:19Will their memory training help our brainy's
45:22to remember the images
45:23and ignore the effects of being spun round
45:25like termites in a tornado?
45:27The order they are looking for
45:29is at the bottom of the screen.
45:35Sterling wobbles off in search of those images
45:37and his fourth task win.
45:39Don't forget, our brainy's must fight their dizziness
45:42and remember the five images they saw on the wheel,
45:45arranging them in order of the number of legs on each.
45:48For every one they get wrong,
45:50it's a five-second penalty.
45:51The brainy with the slowest time
45:53will be eliminated from the dojo.
45:55Here's the right order again.
45:57And that looks like a full house for Sterling.
46:05Confident Shahad is next to step off the dizzy wheel.
46:08Can she use her training to remember those images?
46:14No, by the looks of things,
46:16Shahad has just discarded one of the pictures she'll need.
46:22Luckily, she realises a mistake
46:24and goes back to retrieve it.
46:34That looks like five out of five,
46:36but has her laps in focus cost a valuable time.
46:40Last but not least is Tushaya.
46:44Oops, steady there.
46:46It's not a good start from Tushaya,
46:48who's mistaken the horse for the donkey.
46:50Easily done.
46:56Tushaya, there are five cards to remember.
46:58Remember?
47:01Chop, chop, Tushaya.
47:03This is against the clock.
47:10Don't recognise him.
47:20Finally, Tushaya bangs her gong.
47:22But is she fast enough to secure her place in the final?
47:25Let's find out.
47:28With no penalties, Sterling finished in one minute and ten seconds.
47:33With no penalties either,
47:35Shahad finished in one minute and seven seconds.
47:38Tushaya picked up one penalty,
47:40giving her a total time of one minute and twenty-two,
47:43which means it's Tushaya who must hand over her brain belt
47:46and leave the dojo.
47:57The training I did before did help me, but I wasn't really good at training.
48:01I'm a bit disappointed because I wanted to go to the final.
48:04If I had got to the table of supreme focus, I think I might have won.
48:07So with just one level to go, that only leaves happy-go-lucky Sterling and confident Shahad
48:13to don their brown brain belts and prepare for the final showdown.
48:19I'm in the final, I'm in the final.
48:22I'm really happy that I got in the final and that was definitely,
48:27almost definitely, my favourite task.
48:30And hopefully I can just make it and get the black belt.
48:33I'm almost there.
48:34I'm really nervous about the table of supreme focus
48:37because I've heard that you have to control the ball with your mind.
48:41I just really want to win and if I don't, then I think I've let myself down.
48:50Brain Jitsu
48:53Eight young hopefuls arrived at Brain Training Dojo
48:57to fight it out for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:00As training got tougher, so brainies fell by wayside.
49:05Some lacked focus.
49:07Others, speed.
49:08Now, just two remain.
49:10Confident Shahad, who gets stronger with each passing level.
49:14I think I'm going to win, definitely.
49:17And happy-go-lucky Sterling, winner of three levels so far.
49:20I'm in the final, I'm in the final.
49:23But who will use Brain Training to max to win this last challenge?
49:29Level seven, Black Belt.
49:33So, this is it.
49:35Between my two remaining brainies and the black belt
49:39stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
49:41A mental duel that is head-to-head in every sense.
49:46The battlefield?
49:47A table.
49:49But not just any table.
49:50For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus.
49:54Where our two brainies will attempt to move a ball across the table
49:58using only the power of their mind.
50:02By getting this far, they've already demonstrated mental control
50:06under many different types of pressure.
50:08But now, they must learn to focus their minds
50:11by entering a state of total calm.
50:14To prepare them, my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
50:19The Room of Mental Nourishment.
50:24In this, their final visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment,
50:27our last two brainies are about to train
50:30in how to stay focused, no matter what's happening around them.
50:34Our final brain training.
50:36Mentally prepare yourself for the final task.
50:39Don't let the sounds put you off.
50:43While Sterling is concentrating hard to shut out the noise,
50:46Shahad decides that now's the time for a pillar fight.
50:51If this is Shahad's idea of remaining focused,
50:53then it does not board well.
50:58It's a good tune.
51:00Just try and focus.
51:02Exactly, Sterling.
51:03Maybe the tip will help Shahad get into the zone.
51:08Repeat three positive statements to yourself.
51:12OK, then.
51:13I'm a winner! I'm a winner! I'm a winner!
51:16Whilst Shahad may not have grasped the idea of talking to herself,
51:20you can't fault her confidence.
51:22I'm a winner!
51:24I'm going to win the black belt!
51:27Amazing, fun, lovely, amazing, cool.
51:31The tip could make me focus,
51:33but I'm still quite nervous about the final task,
51:37so fingers crossed.
51:40The training helped me
51:42because you're thinking about a different thing
51:44instead of the annoying sound.
51:48To survive the table of supreme focus
51:50and win the black brain belt,
51:52our brainees must now put all their brain training to the test.
51:56Will three-time task winner and hot favourite Sterling
51:59at last realise his black brain belt dream?
52:02Or will Shahad's all-round confidence
52:05be enough to upset the odds?
52:07Let's find out.
52:10Table of supreme focus.
52:15Rules are simple.
52:17Each brainee must push ball to their opponent's end or table
52:20using only power of mind.
52:23Sensors in brainees' headbands measure brain waves.
52:27This is converted into electrical signal
52:29which moves ball.
52:31More focus of mind, stronger signal.
52:35Can see how brainees are doing on computer readout.
52:39Two lines represent two different players.
52:42A more focused mind produces lower lines
52:44and ball will travel faster.
52:48To make sure this is the test of all tests,
52:51our brainees must win the best of three rounds.
53:03So, this is the big one.
53:06Our two finalists must use all their brain training
53:10to enter their zone of absolute focus.
53:13This is the reason they came to the dojo.
53:17This is the moment they've been training for.
53:27It's Sterling who's off to the better start.
53:33But Shahad is fighting back.
53:35Her lower black line showing
53:36that it's she who's now focusing the better of the two.
53:59It's 1-0 to Shahad.
54:07And Sterling now faces an uphill battle.
54:10Can he re-find the focus he's shown
54:11throughout his training?
54:22This time, it's Shahad who gets off to a flyer.
54:25Her face is a picture of concentration.
54:37It's all over.
54:39And almost unbelievably,
54:41it's Shahad who's come out on top.
54:43Finding new depths of focus when it really mattered,
54:46her training has paid off.
54:48Shahad truly has proved herself to be a master of the mind
54:52and worthy winner of the Brain Jitsu Black Belt.
54:57It's amazing, it's an amazing feeling
54:59and I'm just really happy.
55:01I just did the training.
55:02I just said positive things over and over again.
55:05It really did help.
55:07But glory for one brings disappointment for another.
55:11And although he fought valiantly,
55:13Sterling must now leave the dojo.
55:17Walk of eternal regret.
55:21I'm feeling quite disappointed because I did try hard
55:26but Shahad was focusing on the ball maybe more than me.
55:31But I'm also proud of myself because I didn't get this far
55:34and I got through all the rounds
55:36and I'm very happy about that.
55:38But you win some, you lose some.
55:43What an amazing turnaround for Shahad.
55:45Up against the triple task winner, Sterling,
55:48this plucky brainy refused to back down.
55:51And when the pressure was really on,
55:53it was Shahad who was able to call on all her training
55:56and grab that black brain belt.
55:58She won it for the girls.
56:00This process has really helped me
56:01because every day, even in lessons
56:03or when we're having tests and stuff,
56:06you have to always keep calm.
56:08And I've learnt some skills
56:10which are going to be really helpful in my life,
56:12like memory and focusing and concentrating.
56:17It's just really going to help me in my life.
56:19Our journey has come to an end.
56:22Another brainy has proven themselves worthy
56:24to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
56:27But while brain jitsu might represent
56:30the most extreme form of brain training,
56:33its philosophy can be shared by all.
56:36Each and every one of you has it in your power
56:39to grow your mind.
56:41All it takes is dedication and practice.
