00:00I'd like to state that no brainies or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:03and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:09Eight brainies, one challenge.
00:11To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain,
00:16for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:19This is Brain Jitsu.
00:27Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as samurai sword,
00:33he is brain master, he is the sensei.
00:37Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jitsu.
00:42Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:47My trainees, or brainies, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:53A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:02The training has helped me because it tells me to use different parts of my brain instead of the usual
01:06part that I always use.
01:08I'm a tiny bit nervous, but I'm not very nervous because I'm quite a confident person.
01:13I really, really want this black belt and I'm going to win.
01:16Now, my brainies must put their training into practice by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:23Level one.
01:24You're no fault!
01:28Take a look at this crowd of people.
01:30Can you spot the woman in the red jumper?
01:34Spotted, eh?
01:36Congratulations.
01:37You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:40This area, the same part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:47The seven brainies who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where
01:54their training will continue.
01:56The one who fails will be left outside.
01:59Oh!
02:00Feel the burn.
02:02Enter the dojo!
02:06Our brainies must answer four questions by studying the different shapes on the board in front of them.
02:12Get the questions right and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock
02:17a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:19But with only seven pieces of brain and eight brainies, one of either Neil, Jamie, Lottie, Ushra, Jack, Georgina, Isabel
02:29or Devon, will be left outside and eliminated.
02:34A bang of the gong reveals the four questions.
02:41How many red squares are there?
02:50How many three-sided red shapes are there?
02:59How many blue shapes are there?
03:06How many rectangles are there?
03:12The answer our brainies are looking for is four-two-seven-seven.
03:27First to think they've got the cord are Devon and Ushra, with Isabel and Georgina hot in pursuit.
03:34With seven brainies in front of seven pieces of brain, it's Lottie who has to wait her turn.
03:41Crunchy Californian rolls!
03:43Devon has already unlocked a piece of brain, clearly the workings of a focused mind.
03:50Neil, too, has got a bit of brain.
03:54Likewise, Lottie.
03:55She may have taken her time, but it's certainly paid off.
03:59Remember, the cord are brainies you're searching for is four-two-seven-seven, because there are four red squares,
04:06two three-sided red shapes,
04:09seven blue shapes,
04:11and seven rectangles.
04:18Isabel's cracked it!
04:21As have Ushra and Jamie.
04:26It's now a straight race between Georgina and Jack for the last piece of brain,
04:30and with it, the final place in the Brain Jitsu Dojo.
04:35But Jack still hasn't got that combination.
04:38It's now Georgina's turn.
04:45And she's done it.
04:47Jack can hardly believe it.
04:50With that last piece of brain in place, it's Jack who's left out in the cold.
05:00While seven have proven themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training,
05:05for Jack, it's a sad sayonara.
05:07The thing I found most difficult was just checking over the answers after I got it wrong.
05:13I'm not really sure if it was just I was reading questions wrong or something, but I don't really know.
05:20So, with six levels to go, it's time for Devin, Neil, Lottie, Isabel, Ushra, Jamie and Georgina
05:29to receive their yellow brain belts.
05:33That was really, really nerve-wracking, because I was in the last two, and I didn't think I was going
05:38to make it.
05:38I was quite confident that I could go through, but maybe there was a bit more competition there I'd really
05:45expected here.
05:46I want the black belt a lot, because I think if I could get the black belt, I'd be really
05:51proud.
05:54Brain Jitsu!
05:56In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
06:01Level 2, Orange Vault!
06:04You can do things every day without even thinking, like brushing your teeth.
06:08But, ha-ha, you try brushing them using the hand you wouldn't normally use.
06:13See how you get on.
06:15If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving, the frontal lobes.
06:21And that's what Level 2 is all about.
06:24Taking something you can only do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:29Work it!
06:30To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainees are going to need some training.
06:36The Room of Mental Nourishment
06:40This is the Room of Mental Nourishment,
06:42where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
06:46The more seriously they take their training, they're better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:52And in Level 2, that challenge is all about getting the brain to think in a different way.
06:58Brain training.
06:59Take it in turns to cool out the action on your cards.
07:02Everyone has to do the opposite.
07:04OK, here are the cards.
07:05So, our brainees are going to be made to think about something, like following a simple instruction, that they'd normally
07:12do without thinking.
07:13Touch mouth with right hand.
07:18Step backwards.
07:21Keep tongue in mouth.
07:25After a steady start, the pace starts to quicken and mistakes begin to creep in.
07:30Turn head right.
07:34Devin, you got it wrong.
07:36Oh, hey, time for a training tip.
07:39Don't rush.
07:40Pause for two seconds to think before you react.
07:43Top tip, Yushra.
07:45Spending a moment to think before rushing in really can improve your all-round focus.
07:50Rub stomach clockwise.
07:53If you want to work your frontal lobes, why not try this exercise with your friends?
07:59Spin around clockwise.
08:02How do our brainees feel that their training has gone?
08:05Who messed up the most?
08:06Me!
08:08I wasn't thinking, really, and then I just thought, ooh, sit down.
08:12So I just went and sat down without thinking.
08:14I did everything right.
08:17Yeah.
08:19Good for you.
08:20So, will perfect Yushra be just as perfect in the next task?
08:25Will Jamie stop and think?
08:27And will Isabel remember that training tip?
08:31Time to find out as our seven now put their frontal lobe train into the test.
08:37Guardian of the Dojo and Task Adjudicator the Sheehan will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:44Countdown box spot.
08:47Brainees are all given a time, say 12 seconds.
08:50They must then squat down inside the box as soon as Sheehan bang-gong.
08:55Start counting.
08:57Then, when they think time is up, must jump out of a box.
09:04Brainees or brainees closest to target time will go through to next level.
09:08Brainees continue like this until only one remain and is eliminated from Dojo.
09:15My brainees must remember to control their breathing.
09:19The quicker they breathe, the faster they'll count.
09:23Work those frontal lobes.
09:28The first time our brainees must count inside their heads is 21 seconds.
09:34In the darkness of their boxes, our brainees are going to have to think about passing time in a totally
09:39new way.
09:40And it will require all their powers of concentration.
09:44If you want to give your frontal lobes a workout, shut your eyes and on the gong, start counting up
09:49to 21.
09:50Then open them when you think the time is up.
09:56To make this even harder for our brainees, the Sheehan is going to be banging about on her bucket.
10:13And it's Jamie who pops out first, quickly followed by Neil.
10:20While last to emerge is Devon.
10:22So how close were you to that 21 seconds?
10:26Well, if you opened your eyes as Neil popped out of the box, then congratulations.
10:31Because Neil was closest to the time and advances to the next level.
10:37Our six remaining brainees have another go.
10:40Again, if you want to play along at home, shut your eyes and this time on the gong, start counting
10:45to ten.
11:07It looks like her frontal lobes have gone into hibernation.
11:17No problems for Jamie, though, who's next to go through.
11:27With each passing round, another braineer goes safely through.
11:41But Isabel's timings are still as off as a piece of dodgy sushi.
11:53It's the final round, and it's a straight battle between Isabel and perfect Yushra.
11:58The time our pair have to judge is 15 seconds.
12:02Again, if you want to play along, shut your eyes and start counting on the gong.
12:22This time Isabel is the first to emerge, with Yushra just behind her.
12:27So, who has timed their passage to the next round to perfection?
12:36The answer's Yushra, which means it's Isabel who must hand over her brain belt and leave the dojo.
12:53Walk of eternal dread.
12:56First I was doing one elephant, and then that didn't work.
13:00So I just did one, two, three, but that didn't work either.
13:04I feel upset, but I had a great time.
13:10So, with five levels left, it's time for Devon, Neil, Lottie, Yushra, Jamie and Georgina to get their orange brain
13:20belts.
13:21It was very exciting, but it was very tense, because it was me and Isabel at the last round.
13:26And when she got out, I was quite surprised.
13:29Messing up in the training didn't really help at all.
13:31It sort of lowered my confidence quite a lot.
13:33But now that I've gotten through to the next stage, I've got a really good confidence boost.
13:43Brainy, not so brainy.
13:47Who's the clever clogs, and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:511903.
13:52Two American brothers, Orville and Wilbur, have a go at flying.
13:55Impressed?
13:56You should be.
13:57Inspired by a toy helicopter made from a few bits of wood and a rubber band,
14:01the brothers only went and invented the first passenger plane.
14:04Without the Wright brothers, you would never have had this, this, or this.
14:09Thanks, Wright brothers.
14:10I'm off to Sonny's fame.
14:12Now, take a look at these chaps.
14:14Every year, they earl themselves off Bognar Pier.
14:16The rules are simple.
14:18Fly the furthest and win a cash prize.
14:20Come on, son.
14:21You can do it.
14:22Oh, dear.
14:22Back to the drawing board with you, mate.
14:25Brainy, the Wright brothers.
14:27Not so brainy.
14:28Bird brain, bird man of Bognar.
14:32Brainy, Jitsu.
14:35Competition in brain jitsu dojo hotting up.
14:38Only six brainy now remain to battle it out on the watchful eye of Shihan.
14:43Jamie, solid in every level.
14:46Devon, first to enter dojo.
14:48The training has helped me because it tells me to use different parts of my brain.
14:52Confident Neil.
14:53Quiet, calm Lottie, dark horse of group.
14:56I really, really want this black belt and I'm going to win.
14:59So, Gina.
15:00You got it wrong.
15:01Oh.
15:03And perfect Yushra.
15:05I did everything right.
15:07You're right, you're right.
15:08Yeah.
15:10Good for you.
15:11Challenges about to get even tougher.
15:14Only two brainy will make it to final test.
15:16Table of supreme focus.
15:18Quest must move ball with power of mind.
15:21For chance to win,
15:22Brain Jitsu black brain belt is time for...
15:26Level three.
15:28Winbelt.
15:30Now, we all like to chat,
15:32but did you know that using words to communicate
15:34is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful
15:39and that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
15:44Now, if all that's doing your head in,
15:47allow me to explain.
15:49Think of it like a football match.
15:51A player is focused on his own performance,
15:54but the manager, he has to think about all his players.
15:58That's it, Alex.
15:59All the way.
15:59It's the same with the brain.
16:02There's the left half, which deals with the details,
16:04and there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
16:08This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus
16:12by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:15Hey, pump it up!
16:17The Room of Mental Nourishment
16:22It's our brainy's second visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment,
16:25where once more they'll train their brains in preparation for the next challenge,
16:29which, remember, is all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate.
16:36Brain training.
16:37Get into pairs.
16:39Direct the blindfolded brainy to stack the blocks using only one hand.
16:45Hmm, sounds tricky.
16:46How will our brainy's get on?
16:48Maybe not Neil.
16:49OK, OK.
16:50Hand up.
16:51Hand up.
16:52Forward.
16:53So you've got space to move.
16:54Put it on its side.
16:54I've got space to move.
16:56Yeah, and then another one next to that one.
16:58You've got a few there.
16:59Lottie and Neil get off to a good start.
17:01Quiet, calm Lottie, using the right side of her brain
17:03to give her partner good, clear instructions.
17:14Meanwhile, what Yushra's instructions lack in detail,
17:17they make up for in volume.
17:19No, don't knock it over.
17:21Put it on top.
17:23Not bad, but will a training tip help our brainy's
17:26to add a few extra floors onto their skyscrapers?
17:30Use short, clear instructions.
17:32Imagine yourself hearing them.
17:34Shall we try again, then?
17:35With...
17:36OK.
17:37In other words, what our guiders need to do
17:39is imagine what information their partners need,
17:42because good communication means putting yourself
17:45in someone else's shoes.
17:46Now, up.
17:47Very long as soon as you're towards yourself.
17:49Yeah, perfect.
17:49Up, top, up.
17:51Now to your right.
17:53I mean to your left.
17:54Quite another one like that.
17:55And once again, it's Lottie who's taken this idea
17:57on board the quickest.
17:59Neil's tower rising rapidly from the rubble.
18:02What are you doing?
18:02Do it!
18:04So how do our three listeners think their partners did?
18:07Yeah, Lottie was giving quite clear instructions,
18:11and I sort of had a good feel about where everything was in general.
18:15Yushra's a very good partner,
18:18but she kept saying,
18:20um, turn and going,
18:21what way?
18:22Devon was being a bit clearer after he read the tip,
18:25but he was very good to begin with anyway.
18:27So, will Yushra find her sense of direction?
18:31And will quiet, calm Lottie remember her training
18:33once inside the dojo?
18:36Time to find out as they now put their train into the test
18:39for those five green brain belts.
18:45Barrel tip, do maths, quick!
18:48This is test of communication skill,
18:51so six brainy must first divide into teams of two
18:54by drawing chopsticks.
18:59Quickly as possible,
19:01team must tip over six barrel,
19:03containing number that go together to make some.
19:06Pairs need to decide who is guider,
19:08who is tipper.
19:10As tippers will be blindfolded,
19:12they will be relying on guider
19:14to help them find barrel.
19:17Once all six have been tipped,
19:19brainies stop clock by shouting,
19:21Rinjitsu!
19:23Quicker they up end barrels,
19:25more time to pick up number and make some.
19:29When brainy happy with answer,
19:30hit gong!
19:34First two teams to work out correct answer
19:37will get green belt and advance to next level.
19:40One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
19:44The key to success here is for the guider
19:46to use the right side of their brain
19:48to follow their teammates' progress
19:50and give them clear instructions.
19:53For their partner,
19:54it's vital they use the left side of their brain
19:58to focus on these instructions
19:59and nothing else.
20:05First to put their communication train into the test
20:07are Devon and Neil.
20:09With guider Neil working the right side of his brain
20:12and Devon the left.
20:13The boys get off to a cracking start.
20:17Forward.
20:18It's all very well saying step forwards,
20:20but by how much?
20:22Note, note, left, cord, fine cord.
20:26While Neil is giving his partner short, clear instructions,
20:29they're lacking in a bit of detail.
20:31Tip.
20:33Forward.
20:34Tip.
20:37Reach up high.
20:38Tip.
20:40Reach up towards your right.
20:43Tip.
20:44Brain jitsu.
20:45The boys stop the clock in two minutes, four seconds,
20:48but they'll have to wait to find out how much extra time
20:51it's bought them to make their sum.
20:55Next, it's the pink team of Lottie and Yushra.
20:58Forward.
20:59Forward.
21:00To your left.
21:02In training, Lottie was one of the best at giving instructions.
21:05Other hand.
21:06Tip.
21:08And it looks as though she's using the right side of her brain
21:11equally well here.
21:12Tip.
21:14OK, hand up.
21:15Tip.
21:17Forwards.
21:18To your left.
21:20Put your right hand up.
21:22OK.
21:23Tip.
21:24Brain jitsu.
21:25Tipping their last barrel in one minute, six seconds.
21:28The pair finished almost a full minute quicker than Neil and Devon.
21:32Talk about girl power.
21:35Last to tip are James and Georgina.
21:38Long step forward.
21:40Reach your left hand up.
21:42Pull.
21:44And it's a good start.
21:47Move your left hand up.
21:50Turn back a bit.
21:51But Georgina's soon clutching at thin air.
21:55Bit.
21:56Move your left hand back a bit.
21:58OK.
22:00There.
22:00Tip.
22:01Step.
22:02Forwards.
22:05Nope.
22:05Not that one.
22:06There's one just next to it.
22:08Yes, that's the one.
22:09Tip.
22:09Nope.
22:10Not that one.
22:11The team have also been thrown by one or two of the decoy ropes,
22:15which aren't attached to a barrel.
22:16This one.
22:17Tip.
22:19Long step to the left.
22:20Now lift your right hand up.
22:23Forwards.
22:24Yeah.
22:24Turn.
22:25Pull.
22:27Brain jitsu.
22:28At last, the pair stopped the clock at one minute, 59 seconds.
22:34The quickest to tip all their barrels, it's Lottie and Yushra,
22:37who set off first to find their numbers.
22:44Here's what our braineys are looking for.
22:46See if you can work out the sum.
22:48Remember, the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level.
22:53OK, we've got five.
23:01Yushra and Lottie are first to bang the gong,
23:03just ahead of Neil and Devon,
23:05with Jamie and Georgina trailing behind.
23:10But do the sums add up?
23:13First, Lottie and Yushra.
23:1630 minus 15 plus 13 equals 28.
23:20That looks good.
23:24Their numbers may be in a different order,
23:26but Neil and Devon have also made their sum.
23:34It looks as though all our teams have found the right answer.
23:38But as the last to finish,
23:40it's Jamie and Georgina who'll be battling it out
23:42to avoid the elimination in the...
23:45Step!
23:47But with just one green belt up for grabs,
23:49both braineys must use all their powers of focus
23:52to fight the urge to blink.
23:54The first to falter will be eliminated.
24:06Oh, and it's Georgina who can resist no longer.
24:09While Jamie lives to fight another day,
24:12for Georgina, it's time to hand over her orange brain belt
24:15and leave the dojo.
24:19Walk of eternal regret.
24:22We weren't fast enough in the beginning doing the sum
24:25and we got it wrong.
24:27But I didn't actually do the sum.
24:29Jamie did.
24:31I shouldn't think Yushra will win
24:33because she's a strong character
24:36and I think she's really good at all the tasks so far.
24:43So, with four levels to go,
24:45it's Devon,
24:46Neil,
24:47Lottie,
24:48Yushra and Jamie
24:49who line up for their green belts.
24:51The technique I used for the stare-off
24:54was to blink a lot beforehand
24:56and then just focus.
24:58I was really pleased I was picked with Lottie
25:00because the way in the training
25:01she done really good.
25:03I think the girls are definitely better.
25:07Brain T2!
25:11Level 4.
25:12We vote!
25:14This fourth level
25:15requires our braineys
25:17to master a primitive part of their brain
25:19called the amygdala,
25:21the area that responds to threat.
25:23Ah!
25:24Oh, poof!
25:27Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
25:30Maybe you'd just seen a spider.
25:31Ah!
25:32Well, that feeling was triggered
25:34by the old amygdala.
25:36Now, stress can make you lose focus.
25:40Fact.
25:40Which is why my braineys
25:42must train to keep their emotions under control.
25:46Prepare to harness
25:48the power of the mind.
25:50The Room of Mental Nourishment.
25:54We're back in the Room of Mental Nourishment
25:56where our five remaining green belt holders
25:59are about to train
26:00in how to overcome their fears
26:01and stay focused.
26:05Form a circle.
26:06Pass the disgusting brain boost drink
26:08around the circle,
26:09only passing it on
26:10when you have said a different colour.
26:12After one minute,
26:13the brainy holding the drink
26:14has to drink it.
26:15All right, everybody.
26:17Let's do this.
26:18So, our braineys must block out the fact
26:20that they might cop a mouthful of revolting seaweed
26:23and concentrate only on coming up with a new colour.
26:26It's time to train.
26:29Vermillion.
26:31Perfect Eushera starts the ball rolling
26:33and one by one,
26:34her fellow braineys follow.
26:37Indigo.
26:38Bloom.
26:38Adding more colours than a DIY superstore.
26:42Burgundy.
26:43But as the clock ticks down...
26:45No!
26:47...it's Jamie,
26:48who must knock back the drink of stink.
26:51Just drink a tiny bit.
26:52Get some water as well.
26:54Drink it all.
26:56Take the water.
26:56Take the water.
26:57Take the water.
26:57Time for a tip.
27:00Block out your fears
27:01and do not look at the drink.
27:03A million.
27:04Our braineys start again.
27:07This time,
27:08doing their best to avoid eye contact
27:09with a glass of gloop.
27:11Ignoring your fears like this
27:12allows you to keep your emotions under control
27:15and helps with your focus
27:16in almost any situation.
27:20But Perfect Eushera
27:22seems to have forgotten her own tip already.
27:24Literally unable to tear her eyes away.
27:29The gong sounds for a second time
27:31and it's Eushera
27:32who must pay the price
27:33for letting her amygdala take control.
27:36Two.
27:37One.
27:41Ooh, that's disgusting.
27:45It was quite difficult to think of the colours,
27:47especially while you were holding the drink.
27:49Because the thought of drinking that is horrible.
27:54This tasted like mouldy fish.
27:58So, will Perfect Eushera
28:00be able to master her amygdala
28:01in time for the next task?
28:04Can quiet, calm Lottie
28:06stop her mind from going blank?
28:09And will the tater that seaweed
28:11stop Jamie from finding his focus?
28:14It's time to find out
28:16as our five put their brain train into the test
28:18in a fear-filled challenge
28:20that will decide who gets their blue brain belts.
28:24Creepy Crawly Word Grab
28:27This level will test of mind over matter for brainies
28:31and will push them to really overcome their fear.
28:34Underneath the creepy crawlies
28:35lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
28:39Brainies have just one minute
28:40to plunge hands into tank
28:42and pick out up to seven letters each.
28:44They then have a further minute
28:46to make higher scoring words they can.
28:51To do well, my brainies
28:53must block out the signals
28:54coming from their amygdala
28:56and ignore the creepy crawlies.
28:58The quicker they combat their fear
29:00the more time they'll have
29:01to pick out the high-scoring letters.
29:14Underneath the pile of worms
29:16are an extra five golden letters.
29:18If our brainies manage to use one
29:20in their word
29:20they'll double their score.
29:31Our brainies dive straight in.
29:34Even Yushra
29:35after that hesitant performance
29:36during training
29:37is doing her best
29:38to keep her amygdala under control.
29:41While Devon seems happy taking his time
29:44Jamie's tactic would appear
29:46to involve grabbing anything in sight.
29:49Quiet, calm Lottie, meanwhile,
29:51has found one of the golden letters.
29:53If she can now just make a word
29:55she'll double her score.
30:00The time's up.
30:01Our brainies now have a further minute
30:03to make the highest scoring word
30:05they can from their letters.
30:07Devon might have grabbed himself
30:08a few extra letters
30:09but they're all low-scoring.
30:11Will he pay for his pickiness?
30:15With four-letter words
30:17for each of Jamie, Yushra
30:19and confident Neil
30:20it looks as though this one
30:21might go down to the wire.
30:23In fact, only Lottie
30:25with her golden letter
30:26would appear to be truly safe.
30:29See if you can make a word
30:31from the anagram
30:31at the bottom of the screen now.
30:40And there's the second gong.
30:42How have our brainies done?
30:47Beg.
30:49With just three scoring letters
30:51that's a disappointing six points for Devon.
30:54Head.
30:55That's seven points for Neil.
30:59Weak.
31:01And a whopping 14 for Lottie
31:02thanks to that golden W.
31:06Boy.
31:08Like Neil,
31:09that's also seven
31:10for perfect Yushra.
31:12Home.
31:13And finally,
31:14a respectable eight points
31:15for Jamie.
31:17All of which means
31:19that it's Devon
31:20with just a measly six points
31:21who must leave the dojo.
31:25Walk of eternal regret.
31:29I think it went wrong
31:30because there was worms in there
31:33that were really putting me off.
31:36They were just disgusting.
31:38I'm feeling quite depressed
31:40because I thought
31:40I could have done a lot better.
31:45So, with only three levels left,
31:47those who used their minds
31:48to master the worms
31:49are duly rewarded
31:50with their blue belts.
31:52After that last game,
31:54I have much more confidence
31:55the next round.
31:56I think Yushra
31:57is now my biggest contender.
31:59We have that rivalry
32:00between us
32:01and, um,
32:02generally,
32:03I just want to beat her, really.
32:06Brain-tittered.
32:10Brainy.
32:11Not so brainy.
32:13Who's the clever clogs
32:15and whose brain
32:15needs a lot more training?
32:17Ah, the good old toilet.
32:19W.C.
32:19What would we do without it?
32:21Let's not go there.
32:22Most people credit
32:23a British plumber
32:23called Thomas Crapper
32:24with the invention.
32:26But actually,
32:26the idea of the toilet
32:27was first hatched
32:28just over 400 years ago
32:30when a geezer,
32:31John Harrington,
32:32installed one
32:33in his godmother's house.
32:34Her name,
32:35Elizabeth I.
32:36Well, you can't blame a queen
32:37for wanting to be ladylike.
32:39Another name for toilet
32:40is bog.
32:41And for the last 20 years,
32:42hundreds of hopefuls
32:43have been heading for Wales
32:44come summertime
32:45with dreams of becoming
32:46the world bog snorkelling champion.
32:48Oh, bog off.
32:49Brainy.
32:50Sir John Harrington.
32:51Not so brainy.
32:52Bog snorkelers.
32:56Brain-tittered.
32:59Pension in
33:00Brain-jutsu dojo
33:01mounting
33:01as now
33:02just four young hopeful
33:03remain
33:03to compete
33:04under watchful
33:05eye of Sheehan.
33:07I was quite confident
33:09that I could go through.
33:11Determine Jamie
33:12and perfect Yusha.
33:14I'm very excited
33:16because so far
33:17I've been doing
33:17really good.
33:19Also quiet
33:20calm Lottie.
33:21After that last game
33:22I have much more confidence
33:23for the next round.
33:25Only two brainy
33:26will make final showdown.
33:28Table of Supreme Poker.
33:30Well, must move ball
33:31with power of mind.
33:33Brain-jutsu black brain belt
33:35is within the grasp.
33:36It is time for...
33:38Level 5.
33:39Red Bolt!
33:41Now, if you're learning
33:42how to bull ride
33:43then you might be
33:44interested to know
33:45that your new hobby
33:46is doing wonders
33:47for your old grey matter.
33:50Exercising both
33:51the thinking part
33:52of the brain
33:52the cerebrum
33:54and the doing part
33:55the cerebellum.
33:57You see
33:57doing new things
33:59increases the flow
34:00of blood
34:00into your head
34:01which keeps your brain cells
34:03topped up
34:04with the oxygen
34:04they need
34:05to perform
34:06at their best.
34:07So,
34:07in Level 5
34:08my brainy's
34:09are going to be challenged
34:10to learn new skills.
34:12Now,
34:13you can speed up
34:14how quickly
34:14the brain
34:15takes in new stuff.
34:17And this is what
34:18our brainy's
34:18are going to train for now.
34:20The Room of Mental Nourishment
34:25It's our brainy's
34:26fourth visit
34:27to the Room of Mental Nourishment
34:28where they'll be
34:29training their brains
34:30in how to learn
34:30new skills.
34:34Brain training
34:35Juggle the two balls
34:37using a hand
34:38One hand
34:39One!
34:40For as long
34:40as you can
34:42Sounds difficult.
34:43Time to clear the decks.
34:46OK, right.
34:47Who can juggle here?
34:48Not me!
34:49I can't.
34:50Don't press us.
34:51One hand.
34:53You don't have to
34:54use both of them.
34:55The idea
34:56is you throw one up
34:57then you throw
34:58another one up
34:59then you catch the first
35:00and you chuck it up again
35:02before you catch
35:03the second one.
35:04Well,
35:05that's the theory,
35:06Neil.
35:06The tricky bit
35:07is putting it into practice.
35:09Oh, great.
35:09It's landed
35:10in the pool of water.
35:12Neil,
35:12you're the worst.
35:13You can't do anything right.
35:15Hey, watch it.
35:16Given that our brainy's
35:17are finding this new skill
35:19harder than making
35:20an origami space shuttle,
35:22you'd think their focus levels
35:23would be stratospheric.
35:24But I've seen more focus
35:26squinting through
35:27a pair of milk bottles.
35:30Time for a trading tip.
35:32Have confidence.
35:33Compliment each other.
35:36Lovely.
35:38Yay!
35:38The next time you face
35:39a tough mental challenge,
35:41approach it in a positive way.
35:42By remaining confident,
35:44you're much more likely
35:45to succeed.
35:46You're very good
35:47at dropping the balls,
35:48Neil.
35:50I think the card
35:51said to compliment
35:51one another,
35:52yousher.
35:53Jamie,
35:53I think you're getting
35:54much better.
35:55That's more like it,
35:56Lottie.
35:57I think you're going to do
35:58really well in the next challenge,
35:59Neil.
36:00Thank you, Lottie.
36:01It's a shame
36:01and can't agree.
36:03Ouch.
36:04It was quite hard
36:06to compliment you,
36:07we have like this war
36:08going on against her.
36:10She's got quite a lot
36:11of confidence
36:11and I think I do too.
36:13I think her confidence
36:14is a bit misplaced though.
36:21So, will confident Neil
36:22and perfect Yousher
36:24be able to put aside
36:25their rivalry
36:25long enough
36:26to get through
36:27to the next round?
36:29Or will quiet,
36:30calm Lottie's
36:31positive outlook
36:32give her the edge?
36:34Only time will tell
36:35as our four
36:36now put their new
36:37skills train
36:38into the test
36:38and compete
36:39for their red brain belts.
36:43Mind Maze
36:46To win red belt,
36:48brainies must remain
36:49mentally confident
36:50as they learn
36:51new physical skill.
36:53Brainy must guide
36:54marble to end of maze
36:56on their helmet
36:57by tilting head
36:58using the screen
36:59in front of them
37:00as guide.
37:01But there is twist.
37:03Image they are seeing
37:04is in reverse.
37:06That means
37:07to go right
37:07they must tilt left.
37:09What is more
37:10Brainy is up
37:11against clock.
37:13Brainy with slowest time
37:14will be eliminated.
37:16The tip for my brainies
37:18in this next task
37:19is to remain calm
37:21and think positive thoughts.
37:24Giving in to frustration
37:25will only lessen their focus
37:27and slow them up.
37:29Confident Neil
37:30is the first
37:31to get the ball rolling
37:36And it's a pretty good start.
37:39The young Brainy
37:40working his cerebellum
37:41and his cerebrum
37:42with great skill.
37:45But I don't think
37:46you want to go that way
37:47Neil.
37:54Well, this is confusing.
38:00It's quiet, calm
38:01Lottie.
38:02In her training
38:02she found that
38:03thinking positively
38:04really helped her
38:05to learn a new skill.
38:08But after a promising start
38:09she quickly runs into trouble.
38:15Like a tourist in Tokyo
38:17Lottie seems to have
38:18lost all sense of direction.
38:21Remember
38:22you need to think in reverse.
38:24So
38:24next time
38:25tilt forwards
38:26not back.
38:28Oh dear.
38:37At last
38:38Lottie reaches the finish
38:39but will her mental tailspin
38:41have cost her
38:41that red belt.
38:46You should meanwhile
38:47is having trouble
38:47right from the start.
38:51The secret here
38:52is to remember
38:53to stay positive
38:54and let your mind
38:55guide your body.
38:56And she's off
38:58navigating her way
38:59round the maze
39:00like a rickshaw
39:01during rush hour.
39:11Last up is Jamie
39:12who, like you Shrek
39:13is finding it hard
39:14to get going.
39:18Will his training
39:19kick in?
39:21Not that way, Jamie!
39:28There's the gong.
39:29The wipe of the brow
39:30revealed just how
39:31mentally demanding
39:32that really was.
39:33That was tense.
39:35So which of our
39:37brainies
39:37was most phased
39:38by the maze?
39:40Neil
39:4143 seconds
39:45Lottie
39:451 minute
39:4651 seconds
39:49Yushra
39:5042 seconds
39:52And Jamie
39:531 minute
39:5416 seconds
39:55And so Yushra
39:58just pips Neil
39:59to win
39:59by a single second
40:01while for Lottie
40:02it's a sad
40:02sayonara
40:03as she hands over
40:04her brain belt
40:05and exits
40:06the dojo.
40:11Walk of eternal regret
40:15I found the training
40:16quite easy
40:17but the challenge
40:17was much harder
40:18I'm sad to go
40:20but I'll remember it
40:20for the rest of my life
40:23So with two levels
40:24to go
40:24that now just leaves
40:26Neil
40:26Yushra
40:27and Jamie
40:28to receive their
40:29red brain belts
40:30I was quite confident
40:32so I think the tip
40:34in brain training
40:35really helped me
40:36Neil is really
40:37the one I'm worried about
40:38I'm not that worried
40:38about Yushra
40:39because I don't think
40:40she'll get to the final
40:43Brain Tito
40:46Level 6
40:48Braille Belt
40:50It's this level
40:51which will decide
40:52which two
40:53of my remaining
40:54braineese
40:55will go on
40:56to battle it out
40:57for the black belt
41:00Imagine you're
41:01performing a dance
41:02as well as you
41:03move to remember
41:03there's the other
41:04dancer to think about
41:05and there's loads
41:06of people watching
41:07you
41:07it's remembering
41:08things under pressure
41:09like this
41:09that level 6
41:10is all about
41:11It centres
41:13around three areas
41:14of the brain
41:15the seeing part
41:16the occipital lobes
41:18the memory part
41:19the temporal lobes
41:21and the movement part
41:23the cerebellum
41:24to the max
41:26the room of mental nourishment
41:31final here we come
41:33our braineese
41:34are back in the room
41:35of mental nourishment
41:35this time for some
41:37memory training
41:38brain training
41:40memorise the sequence
41:41of the objects
41:42mouse
41:44banana
41:44snake
41:45eiffel tower
41:46mouse
41:46banana
41:47snake
41:48poison
41:50so guys
41:51should we
41:52turn around
41:53oh yeah
41:54that might help
41:57monster arm
41:59fly swat
42:00fried egg
42:01sunglasses
42:02eyeball
42:03frog
42:04mouse
42:05banana
42:06snake
42:08eiffel tower
42:09toilet
42:09very good
42:11chaps
42:11and what about
42:12you
42:12shra
42:13cabbage
42:13no cheating
42:14you shra
42:15cabbage
42:17cabbage
42:18hammer photo
42:19frame
42:20wands
42:21and poison
42:25you took the
42:26longest out of
42:27all three of us
42:28because I remember
42:30it was that way
42:30no I remember
42:32it was that way
42:33too
42:33I remember it was
42:34that way
42:34oh no not another
42:35argument
42:36quick where's the
42:37training tip
42:37well it was your
42:39idea
42:41create a story
42:42linking the
42:43objects together
42:44right let's
42:45swap them
42:45memory training
42:47like this isn't
42:47just great for the
42:48brain it's also
42:49very useful
42:50next time you're
42:51going shopping
42:51create a story
42:52out of your list
42:53and see if you
42:54can remember
42:54everything on it
42:56in the eiffel
42:57tower there was
42:58a toilet
42:58where a rat
42:59lived called
43:00barry
43:00he wore sunglasses
43:02and had a
43:02spatula
43:03he had a picture
43:04of his wife
43:04in a pink fluffy
43:05frame
43:05he ate
43:06cabbage
43:06he was attacked
43:08by a snake
43:08and he lost
43:10his arm
43:10but then he
43:11grabbed a hammer
43:12and some poison
43:14and the magic
43:16wand
43:16and turned
43:18the snake
43:19into bananas
43:20and a frog
43:22then he went
43:23home and ate
43:23some fried eggs
43:24that was just
43:25weird
43:27it might not be
43:28JK Rowling
43:29but as their story
43:30helped her brainies
43:31memorise those
43:32objects
43:32in the eiffel
43:33tower there
43:34was a loo
43:35and a mask
43:36called barry
43:37lived in there
43:37he had a
43:39there was two
43:40things
43:41no he had a
43:42no he had glasses
43:44and he had a
43:45wand
43:45no a spatula
43:47he had one arm
43:49once again
43:49useless temporal
43:50lobes that are
43:50down
43:51he was attacked
43:52by a snake
43:52and lost his arm
43:54but then he
43:55picked up a hammer
43:56and a magic wand
43:58and turned the snake
44:00into some bananas
44:02while the boys
44:03appeared to have
44:04their memory
44:04licked
44:05to his friend
44:06jumpy
44:06and had a
44:07fried egg
44:09but I'm good
44:10at memorising
44:10stuff
44:11just not stories
44:12personally I think
44:13Yushra's gonna go out
44:15I've given up
44:15arguing with you two
44:17let's just see
44:18what happens
44:18she's given up
44:20well done Jimmy
44:23will Yushra
44:24master her memory
44:25in time to make
44:25it through to the
44:26next level
44:27or will her arch rivals
44:29confident Neil
44:30and determined Jamie
44:31prove just too strong
44:34it's time to find out
44:35as our three
44:36red belt holders
44:37put their training
44:38to the test
44:40super memory
44:41diddly dance
44:44rainy is spin
44:46round and round
44:47on dizzy wheel
44:48total of ten time
44:49task is to use
44:51all power of focus
44:52to memorise
44:53five zoomed in
44:54picture in front of them
44:56then
44:57risk against clock
44:58to cross balancing beam
45:00and collect
45:00full sized version
45:02of same image
45:03from ten
45:04hanging above them
45:05then
45:06they must arrange
45:07in order
45:08that they have seen
45:09from the wheel
45:10when brainy
45:11is happy with selection
45:12hit gong
45:14to stop clock
45:18my tip for the brainy's
45:20is to keep focused
45:21on the main objective
45:22and use their training
45:24to link the five images
45:25together
45:27so our final three
45:29brave the wheel
45:30to compete for their
45:31brown brain belts
45:32and their chance of a place
45:33at the table of supreme focus
45:35it's time to spin
45:39will the memory training
45:41help our brainy's
45:42to remember the images
45:42and ignore the effects
45:44have been spun round
45:45like slugs
45:46and cement mixer
45:46the pictures they're looking for
45:48are at the bottom
45:49of the screen now
45:54looking a little unsteady
45:56confident Neil
45:56wobbles off
46:00but I don't recall
46:01seeing one of those
46:03don't forget
46:04our brainy's
46:05must fight their dizziness
46:06and remember the five images
46:07they saw on the wheel
46:08some of which
46:09look very similar
46:10for every one
46:11they get wrong
46:12it's a five second penalty
46:14the brainy
46:15with the slowest time
46:16will be eliminated
46:16from the dojo
46:19he is the right order again
46:21and it looks like
46:22Neil has hooked himself
46:23a couple of red earrings
46:33those fish might look the same
46:34but look closely
46:35and you'll see
46:36they're subtly different
46:41perfect ushera
46:42is next to step off
46:43the dizzy wheel
46:44as their training
46:45help to remember
46:46those images
46:49it might well have
46:50but if you don't get a move on
46:51then it won't matter
46:52if Yushra's remembered
46:53them all or not
47:05as it turns out
47:06Yushra's memory
47:07is not up to much either
47:08she's even forgotten
47:09that there are five images
47:11to collect
47:11not four
47:32last but not least
47:33it's determined
47:34Jamie
47:39faster than you can say
47:39crispy California rolls
47:41Jamie grabs his five images
47:42but are they the right ones
47:53here's the order now
47:54and like the others
47:55it looks as though
47:56Jamie might be adding
47:57some penalties
47:58to his overall time
48:01so who's remembered
48:02so who's remembered enough
48:03of their training
48:03to secure their place
48:04in that final
48:05let's find out
48:07Neil finished in one minute
48:0943 seconds
48:10but with three penalties
48:11his total time
48:12was one minute
48:1358
48:16Yushra only picked up
48:17two penalties
48:18but still enough
48:19to give her an overall time
48:20of two minutes
48:2117 seconds
48:22while Jamie
48:24despite his four penalties
48:25raced around fast enough
48:27to give him a total time
48:28of one minute 20
48:30which means
48:31it's perfect Yushra
48:33who must hand over
48:34her brain belt
48:34and leave the dojo
48:39walk of eternal regret
48:42it all went wrong
48:44where we were spinning around
48:46because it was a bit too fast
48:47so I completely forgot
48:49about everything
48:50I'm feeling quite disappointed
48:52but I'm also
48:53quite happy that I'm at least
48:55in the top three
48:56and that's what I wanted to be
49:00so with just one level to go
49:02that only leaves confident Neil
49:04and determined Jamie
49:05to don their brown brain belt
49:07and prepare for the final showdown
49:09I'm quite confident
49:11about the table of supreme focus
49:12because I'm very good
49:14at just focusing
49:14and keeping my mind
49:15on something
49:16I really really badly
49:18want that black belt
49:40I was quite confident
49:44that I could go through
49:45and determined Jamie
49:47winner of three tasks so far
49:49Neil is really the one I'm worried about
49:52but who will use brain training
49:54to the max
49:54to win last challenge
49:57level seven
49:58black belt
50:00so this is it
50:03between my two remaining brainies
50:05and the black belt
50:06stands brain jitsu's ultimate challenge
50:09a mental duel
50:11that is head to head
50:12in every sense
50:14the battlefield
50:15a table
50:16but not just any table
50:18for this my friends
50:19is the table
50:20of supreme focus
50:22where our two brainies
50:24will attempt to move a ball
50:25across the table
50:26using only
50:27the power
50:29of their mind
50:30by getting this far
50:31they've already demonstrated
50:32mental control
50:34under many different
50:35types of pressure
50:36but now
50:37they must learn
50:38to focus their minds
50:39by entering a state
50:40of total calm
50:42to prepare them
50:43my two finalists
50:44will need to get into
50:45the zone
50:46room of mental nourishment
50:51in this
50:52their final visit
50:53to the room of mental nourishment
50:54our last two brainies
50:56are about to train
50:57in how to stay focused
50:58no matter what's happening
50:59around them
51:02brain training
51:03mentally prepare yourself
51:04for the final task
51:06don't let the sounds
51:07put you off
51:08ok
51:15so our two finalists
51:17have to block out the noises
51:18and concentrate
51:19only on finding their focus
51:23while confident
51:24Neil resorts
51:25to shutting his eyes
51:26determined
51:26Jamie
51:27appears to have
51:28entered a trance
51:30it looks like
51:31neither
51:32are going to let
51:32themselves become
51:33distracted
51:37interesting
51:40visualize
51:40and focus
51:41on somewhere
51:42you feel happy
51:43and calm
51:45thinking beach
51:46sand
51:47and see
51:48that should do it
51:49I'd say
51:57with both brainies
51:59looking cooler
51:59than a kimono
52:00in a heat wave
52:01it looks like we're in
52:02for a real mental battle
52:05I do think I'm focused
52:06at this point already
52:07the tip helped a bit
52:09but I don't think
52:09it was really necessary
52:11it's a 50-50 chance
52:13for both of us
52:14better be me
52:15yeah
52:15bring on the pain
52:16then Jamie
52:17bring it on
52:20to survive the table
52:21of supreme focus
52:22and win the black brain
52:23belt
52:23our brainies
52:24must now put
52:25all their brain
52:26training to their test
52:27will confident
52:28Neil's positive outlook
52:29get him that
52:30elusive black belt
52:33or will determine
52:34Jamie block his way
52:37let's find out
52:40table of supreme focus
52:45rules are simple
52:46each brainy
52:47must push ball
52:48to their opponent's
52:49end of table
52:50using only power
52:51of mind
52:52sensors in brainy's
52:54headbands
52:54measure brainwaves
52:56this is converted
52:57into electrical signal
52:58which moves ball
53:00more focused mind
53:02stronger signal
53:03and faster ball
53:04will travel
53:05see how brainies
53:07are doing
53:07on this readout
53:08two lines
53:09represent each player's
53:11brainwaves
53:11lower the line
53:13more concentrated
53:14than mine
53:20to make sure
53:21this is the test
53:22of all tests
53:23our brainy's
53:24must win the best
53:24of three rounds
53:34so this is the big
53:36one
53:38our two finalists
53:39must use all their
53:40brain training
53:41to enter their zone
53:42of absolute focus
53:44this is the reason
53:46they came to the dojo
53:47this is the moment
53:49they've been training
53:50for
53:53and they're off
53:56at first both brainy's
53:58seem pretty evenly
53:59matched
54:02but eventually
54:03it's determined
54:04Jamie who gets
54:05the ball rolling
54:07his lower black line
54:09on the readout
54:10showing that he's
54:11the one
54:11who's just got
54:12the mental edge
54:25it's one nil
54:26to Jamie
54:27and confident
54:27Neil now
54:28faces an uphill battle
54:33will he remember
54:34his training
54:35and find his focus
54:36the pressure's
54:37really on
54:48but once again
54:49it's Jamie
54:50whose powers
54:50of concentration
54:51shine through
54:52pushing the ball
54:53towards his opponent
54:54in one go
55:02it's all over
55:04and it's determined
55:05Jamie who has
55:06come out on top
55:08drawing on all
55:09his brain training
55:10when it really mattered
55:11this young master
55:12of the mind
55:13has truly shown himself
55:14to be a worthy winner
55:16of the brain jitsu
55:17black belt
55:18I feel just amazing
55:19to have won a black belt
55:20it's just about
55:21the biggest thing
55:21I've ever won in my life
55:24but triumph for one
55:26brings disappointment
55:27for another
55:27and although he fought
55:28well
55:29Neil must now
55:30leave the dojo
55:36war of eternal regret
55:41everything's so tense
55:42in the final
55:42it is really really hard
55:44to just conjure up
55:45a way to totally let go
55:48after the first round
55:49I just felt a bit
55:51shattered
55:52and I didn't really know
55:53how to get past Jamie
56:03what a display of brain power
56:05from determined Jamie
56:06calling on all his training
56:08when it really mattered
56:09this tough competitor
56:11found just that extra bit
56:12of focus
56:13to get one over
56:14on his rival
56:15Neil
56:15and grab
56:16the black brain belt
56:18yes
56:19come on
56:20that game was just about
56:22the most tense game
56:24I've ever played in my life
56:25I just concentrated
56:26on the ball
56:27and nothing else
56:28I'm just about as proud
56:30as I could be
56:31of myself right now
56:33our journey
56:34has come to an end
56:35another brainy
56:36has proven themselves
56:37worthy
56:38to wear the brain jitsu
56:39black belt
56:40but while brain jitsu
56:42might represent
56:43the most extreme
56:44form of brain training
56:46its philosophy
56:47can be shared
56:48by all
56:50each and every one of you
56:51has it in you
56:52a power
56:53to grow your mind
56:54all it takes
56:55dedication
56:56and practice
56:58this
56:59has been
57:01brain jitsu
57:03you
