00:00...in the making of this program, and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under
00:04expert supervision.
00:07Eight braineers, one challenge. To use complex mass of 100 billion cells, we call the Brain, for chance to win
00:15Renjutsu Black Brain Belt.
00:17This is... Renjutsu!
00:25Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as Samurai sword, he is Brain Master, he is the
00:33Sensei!
00:35Konnichiwa, and welcome to Renjutsu. Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:45My trainees, or brainies, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:51A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:00I've been training for the past couple of days.
01:02My brain's really improved in terms of concentration.
01:05The last few days I've been training hard, I feel much more focused because my brain's been practising a lot,
01:10and I'm ready to beat all of the young a lot.
01:12Now my braineers must put their training into practice. By testing a part of their brain we use every day.
01:19Level one. Level vault!
01:23Take a look at my very cluttered garage. Now, try to find a little rubber duck.
01:29Spotted, eh? Congratulations! You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:34This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:42The seven braineers who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where
01:48their training will continue.
01:50The one who fails will be left outside.
01:53Oh! Feel the burn.
01:56Enter the dojo!
01:59Braineers must first answer four questions by counting different faces on the board in front of them.
02:05Get the questions right and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock
02:10a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:15But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineers, one of either Sarah, Jack, Patrick, Freddy, Alice, Luca, Menat
02:24or Sarah will be left outside and eliminated.
02:29Ooh, you can put the tension in the noodle bar with a very sharp chopstick, as the four questions are
02:34revealed.
02:35How many green faces are there?
02:42How many black smiley faces are there?
02:52How many faces have two ears?
03:04How many red faces have one ear?
03:10The answer our braineers are looking for is eight, seven, seven, one.
03:15The order in which they unlock their piece of brain will decide the order they take part in the next
03:20levels of the dojo.
03:21The braineer who does not complete this challenge will be eliminated.
03:28Jack is first up with Patrick, Sarah and Freddy close behind him, but have they got the right code?
03:34Soon, there's one braineer to each piece of brain, but Sarah is left out in the cold.
03:46Unbelievable! Sarah has got the code wrong, leaving a gap wide open for Sarah.
03:54Leaping Salmon Shishimi, in a sudden twist, it seems all of her braineers have got the code wrong.
04:00The key to success is to remain calm and not get distracted.
04:04Use those occipital lobes and focus.
04:06Don't forget the code our braineers are looking for is eight, seven, seven, one, as there are eight green faces,
04:13seven black smiley faces, seven faces with two ears, and one red face with one ear.
04:23So, Patrick's cracked it first, with cheeky grin Freddy finishing a close second.
04:29Four more braineers follow suit, leaving Sarah and Minat to battle it out for the final place in the dojo.
04:38Minat is staying calm under pressure.
04:40She's got the right combination of eight, seven, seven, one.
04:42Now she just needs to try it out.
04:47She sees her opportunity, and that's it. Minat is in, and Sarah's out.
04:54So, as seven enter the dojo, for a chance to survive six more gruelling levels of brain training,
05:00for Sarah, the dream of the black brain belt has ended before it even started.
05:10I did my training at home, but I guess the pressure got to me.
05:14And I guess I didn't, like, really count properly.
05:18I, maybe I could have done a bit more training.
05:22So, with six levels to go, only Patrick, Freddy, Luca, Jack, Sarah, Alice, and Minat have entered the dojo and
05:28achieved the first of their coloured brain belts.
05:31The toughest competition here is Patrick.
05:34Everything, he's on it, he's on it, he's on it.
05:36I, I don't know, I'm just really scared now.
05:39The annoying thing is, though, because I finished it first, I have to do every single challenge first.
05:44I did get it right because I've revised a lot, but I just keep on panicking and everything.
05:53In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
05:58Level two, orange belt.
06:02We do things every day without even thinking about it, like using the remote control for the telly.
06:08But try turning up the volume with the hand that you don't normally use.
06:13Go on, a lot more harder, isn't it?
06:15If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving, the frontal lobes.
06:22And that's what level two is all about.
06:25Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:30Work it!
06:31To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainees are going to need some training.
06:37Room of Mental Nourishment
06:40The Room of Mental Nourishment is where our young hopefuls will train their brains to help them progress to the
06:45next levels of the dojo.
06:47The more serious our brainees take the training, the better prepared they will be for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:52And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
06:58Brain training.
07:00Write the name of the braineer you think will win the black belt.
07:03Write backwards using the hand you don't normally write with.
07:08Great.
07:08Yeah, okay.
07:10I think that means you have to write their name backwards.
07:13So if it was me, it would be E-I-D-D-E-I-S.
07:17Are you trying to persuade the group that you're going to be the winner, Freddie?
07:20Personal.
07:22So, our brainees are writing backwards with the wrong hand.
07:26This will help them to think in a new way by getting them to use their frontal lobes.
07:31Don't touch.
07:32Do you want to win a name?
07:33Do you want to win a name?
07:35No, because I think she's very focused.
07:38You're going to win.
07:39Wrong hand.
07:40This is hard.
07:41For those who are struggling, here's a training tip.
07:46Picture the words in front of you.
07:47Before you write it, think about each individual letter.
07:50Oh, that's not how you do an F.
07:58F.
07:58I'm going to write a Freddie because I'm the best.
08:01Luke's like Freddie isn't concentrating on writing backwards, but is still trying to persuade
08:05Luka to think of him as the winner.
08:07Oh, right.
08:08Yeah.
08:10In fact, he's now having a nap.
08:12I'm sleeping.
08:14How many people have written me?
08:16Me.
08:17Why?
08:18I've written me.
08:19Whee!
08:19I've probably written you because you're very confident.
08:23Because everyone probably assumes that the person who's most confident is going to win.
08:28If you want to work your frontal lobes at home by writing backwards, just like Jack is right now,
08:33it will help improve your all-round focus.
08:38Will Minap be the challenge winner and prove Jack right?
08:41Will confident Patrick sail through?
08:43And will Cheeky Freddie's nap have cost him the orange brain belt?
08:47There's only one way to find out.
08:50It's time for our braineese to really put their training to the test.
08:53Guardian of the dojo and task adjudicator the Sheehan will now demonstrate the level 2 challenge.
09:00Spell backwards.
09:01Step forwards.
09:03To stand chance of gaining orange belt, seven braineese must now think in reverse.
09:09Sheehan will show them picture.
09:11They have to say what is.
09:13That is cut.
09:14Then dispel word backwards.
09:17T-A-C.
09:20Get right and our braineese can step forward.
09:23Get wrong and they stay put.
09:25Braineese can choose length of word they want to spell backwards.
09:29Longer word, more time they get to answer.
09:32Three seconds for three-letter word.
09:34Up to six seconds for six letters.
09:37More letters, more steps towards destination.
09:40There is slight advantage to going first in challenge,
09:43but order braineese take part is order they completed level 1.
09:47Whoever not finished will be eliminated from the dojo.
10:19My brainy tip here is to imagine the whole word
10:20maybe cheeky freddy's little sleep helped him focus.
10:26Bone.
10:27E-N-O-B.
10:29Luca sails through.
10:32Five.
10:33Jack's the first to really challenge his frontal lobes and attempt five letters.
10:37Horse.
10:37E-S-R-O-H.
10:41His brain training has really paid off there.
10:43Five steps towards the finishing line.
10:45Now for the girls.
10:46Four.
10:49Dice.
10:49E-C-I-D.
10:51Sarah does nice with dice.
10:54Five.
10:56Knife.
10:58E-F-I-N-K.
11:01A cool five steps for Alice.
11:03She's as sharp as a knife, that one.
11:05Four.
11:07Bear.
11:08R-A-E-B.
11:12And Minat means a full complement of correct answers for the first round.
11:16Now back to Patrick.
11:18Four.
11:21Dot.
11:22T-R-A-D.
11:26Close one, Patrick.
11:27Nearly out of time.
11:29Four.
11:31Star.
11:33R-A-R-T-A-R.
11:36Oh, Tiki Freddy is the first to get one wrong.
11:39Perhaps he should have taken the training more seriously.
11:42As the challenge progresses, Jack, Alice and Minat also get their words wrong,
11:46leaving confident Patrick in a strong position to take first place
11:50and be the first to win his orange brain belt.
11:52Four.
11:55Nose.
11:55E-S-O-N.
11:57A whole run of correct answers means Luca's second to reach the podium,
12:02with Sarah coming third.
12:03And amazingly, Cheeky Freddy takes fourth place.
12:06That just leaves Jack, Alice and Minat to battle it out for the last two orange brain belts.
12:12Three.
12:15Dog.
12:16G-O-D.
12:22Three.
12:25C-A-T-T-A-C.
12:30So, this task has proven too much of a brain drain for Minat,
12:34and her journey to cerebral superiority has come to an end.
12:40She must relinquish her yellow brain belt and tread the lonely path of the...
12:45Walk of Eternal Regret.
12:48I'm happy that I got through the first round, but disappointed that I didn't get through the second round.
12:52What I'd do to improve my performance would be to focus more and to take it more seriously.
13:01I think Sarah might win because she's very focused and he's quite good at a lot of things.
13:10So, with five levels to go, only Patrick, Freddy, Luca, Jack, Sarah and Alice have gained their orange brain belts.
13:17Best person was Luca because he coped with the pressure.
13:21You think it's really easy, but until you actually do it, you don't actually understand how difficult it is.
13:27If I get out now, it'll be really embarrassing because I've been doing quite well.
13:32And then to get out on a round for an easy mistake will be horrible.
13:40Brainy two.
13:42Brainy, not so brainy.
13:46Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:49First up, astronauts.
13:51This exclusive group is made up of some of the brightest bods on Earth.
13:55In 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon uttering the immortal words,
14:00one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
14:04I wonder if that was off the top of his head.
14:06Here's another group.
14:07Now, not McFly.
14:08Oi, get your hair cut.
14:10But these lot, the Sahara marathon runners, these balmy boys and babes think nothing of
14:16legging it four and a half thousand miles across the Sahara desert in temperatures well
14:21over a hundred degrees.
14:22Phew!
14:23And it takes these jokers a hundred days to reach the finish line.
14:26If they ever get there, I'm tired just thinking about it.
14:29Brainy astronauts.
14:31Not so brainy Sahara runners.
14:36Rain T2.
14:39Rain T2.
14:40Pressure in Brain Jitsu Dojo rising.
14:43Now just six young hopefuls remain to compete under watchful eye of Sheehan.
14:48Confident Patrick, who has won both tasks.
14:51Cheeky Freddy.
14:53The next person I think to go will be one of the girls.
14:58Quiet Alice, who could be Dark Horse in Dojo.
15:01Sarah.
15:02Me and Alice have got to have tickets to knock the boys out.
15:07Jack, who is placed well in both rounds.
15:10And Luca.
15:11No offence, but I think Alice is going to go.
15:13Challenge is about to get even tougher.
15:15Only two brainy's will make final test.
15:18Table of Supreme Forecast, where they must move ball with power of mind.
15:23For chance to win, Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
15:26It's time for level three.
15:29Who is that?
15:31Now, we all like to chat.
15:33But did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown
15:39so incredibly powerful?
15:41And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
15:45Now, if all that's doing you're heading, allow me to explain.
15:50Imagine you're the trumpet player in an orchestra.
15:54Your main focus is on your own notes.
15:57But the conductor, well, he has to listen for everyone's notes.
16:02It's the same with the brain.
16:04There's the left half, which deals with the details.
16:06And there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
16:09This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:17Hey, pump it up!
16:20Room of Mental Nourishment.
16:26It's our second visit to the brain training room of mental nourishment.
16:30Brainy's have a choice as to whether or not they take part.
16:33But any extra training they do will help them with the next challenge.
16:37For level three, it's communication.
16:39Get into two groups.
16:41One group describes the picture in front of them.
16:43The other group draws it.
16:45So, our brainy's are in two groups.
16:48One group should use the right side of their brains to describe clearly how to draw the picture.
16:52The other team should use the left side of their brains to concentrate on interpreting those instructions to draw the
16:57same picture.
16:58And then do a dot on A3.
17:01And then draw another dot on to the right of three.
17:04And one between three and four and one between two and three.
17:07It's not going very well so far, is it?
17:09The key is to work together as a team, communicate clearly, talk one at a time, and listen to each
17:15other.
17:15You see where one joins two?
17:17Yeah.
17:18And you see where C joins D?
17:19Now, draw a dot on the top line of E.
17:23No, just draw a squiggle coming.
17:24Okay, guys, do you speak one at a time?
17:26Yeah, well, you try explaining it then.
17:29For the sake of peace and harmony, it's time for a training tip.
17:33Use short, clear instructions.
17:36Imagine yourself hearing them.
17:38Okay.
17:39Like, guys, I think we should speak one at a time.
17:42Basically, what you should have at the moment, a big oval shape.
17:45Yeah.
17:45An oval shape.
17:46An oval shape in the middle.
17:48Yeah.
17:48And then in the middle of that oval shape, a circle.
17:51Yeah.
17:51In the middle of the circle, two dots.
17:53Yeah.
17:54Wait, you see those four squares?
17:56Four squares.
17:57So where they join?
17:58No.
17:58No, in the middle.
18:00Okay, it's like, yeah, in the middle.
18:01Jack really takes the communication tip on board,
18:04and Cheeky Freddy is taking this training a lot more seriously.
18:08Okay, draw up from the top.
18:10Yeah.
18:11Over in, like, a loop, crossing around, and up like a six, yeah?
18:16Between three and four.
18:16Confident Patrick hasn't really taken part.
18:19This communication exercise is designed to help her brainies do well in the next challenge,
18:24but he seems to be opting out.
18:25Oh, my God.
18:28I see.
18:28Oh, it is.
18:32So Jack and Freddy really outshone the others.
18:35Will their hard work pay off?
18:38Will Patrick's silence be his downfall?
18:41Time to find out, as our six now put their communication train into the test
18:45to compete for their green brain belt.
18:50Lantern work number crack.
18:53This level tests how well our brainies can communicate,
18:56so our six need to be in teams of two.
19:00The chopsticks will decide the pairs.
19:04So there's Sarah and Jack, who both did well in the training,
19:07Alice and Luca, and Freddy and Patrick.
19:10Those two are obviously buddies, but will they work well as a team?
19:14Six lanterns per team, containing numbers and confetti.
19:18Pairs need to decide who is Gaida, who is Wakka.
19:23Wakka is blindfolded and holds soft, spongy butt.
19:27Gaida shouts out instructions to Wakka.
19:30Wakka has to hit lanterns to release numbers.
19:33Once all lanterns are smashed, Gaida shouts,
19:36Brynjutsu, and team needs to collect only numbers.
19:41Pairs must arrange numbers to make correct sum
19:44and hit gong when happy with answer.
19:48Green brain belt will be reward for first two teams with correct answers.
19:52One of losing pair will face walk of eternal regret.
19:56The key to success here is for the Gaida to use the right side of their brain
20:01to follow their team-mate's progress and give them clear instructions.
20:05For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain
20:10to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
20:14Smash! Go! Go!
20:16The gong sounds and suddenly everything goes crazier than underwater karaoke.
20:21Come on! Come on! Come on!
20:22Come on! Come on, Patrick!
20:23Get out!
20:24Luca is hitting his lanterns faster than a bullet train.
20:28Get out!
20:30Here are the numbers our brainies are looking for.
20:33See if you can work out the sum.
20:35Water! Water!
20:37Let's drop it!
20:38Let's drop it!
20:38Come on, Patrick!
20:40Here, here, here!
20:40Cheeky Freddy seems to have forgotten all his training.
20:43Shouting isn't a good way of communicating,
20:45and Patrick has no idea which way to whack.
20:49Wake up!
20:49Wake up!
20:50Let's drop it!
20:52Let's drop it!
20:53Let's drop it!
20:54Let's drop it!
20:56Sarah and Jack both communicate
20:58well in the training, and it shows,
21:01because they've already finished their sum.
21:0312 plus 8 and 20. Go!
21:05Still trailing behind is Patrick and Freddy.
21:08They can't find all their numbers,
21:10and the frustration is maddening.
21:12OK.
21:13Catch it!
21:13Oh, Sam, I just got them!
21:15There!
21:15What have we got, Sam?
21:16And then add 8!
21:17Add 8.
21:19OK, wait, wait, wait.
21:202 times 6 plus 8 equals 20.
21:23Luca and Alice have gonged
21:25to show they're happy with their answer,
21:26and it looks good to me.
21:28There it is!
21:28Patrick and Freddy finally get their missing number
21:31and work out the sum in seconds,
21:32but it looks like it's too late.
21:35Yes!
21:36The other two teams have got theirs correct,
21:39and in a faster time,
21:40which means that Patrick and Freddy are the losers,
21:42and will now go face to face in the...
21:45Step!
21:51Both braineese must use their training
21:53to focus on fighting the urge to blink.
21:55There's only one green belt up for grabs,
21:58so who'll blink first and be eliminated?
22:08It's a shocking result.
22:10Confident Patrick has lost.
22:11His fellow braineese thought he was favourite to win,
22:14but he was the first to blink,
22:16and now he's out and faces the lonely...
22:19Walk of eternal regret.
22:23I feel really disappointed about getting out of it
22:26because I thought I was doing quite well.
22:29The real thing that went wrong
22:32was our communication,
22:33and also the fact that,
22:36well,
22:36we couldn't find our numbers.
22:41So with four levels left,
22:42it's green braine belts for Freddy,
22:44Luca,
22:45Jack,
22:45Sarah,
22:46and Alice.
22:47I'm quite scared now
22:48because I've been in the bottom two,
22:50and I had to stare off Patrick,
22:51which is quite hard
22:52because he's much taller than me.
22:54After the first round,
22:55we realised how much the training was important,
22:58so I think we paid a lot more attention
23:00during the training,
23:01and I think that helped us a lot.
23:04Brain T2!
23:11This fourth level requires our brain ease
23:14to master a primitive part of the brain
23:16called the amygdala,
23:18the area that responds to threat.
23:20Oh, pfft!
23:24Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
23:27Maybe it was on a dark night.
23:29Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
23:33Stress can make you lose focus.
23:37Fact.
23:38Which is why my brainies
23:40must train to keep their emotions
23:42under control.
23:44Room of mental nourishment.
23:48We're back in the room of mental nourishment,
23:50and it's time for our five remaining
23:52green belt holders
23:53to overcome fear
23:54and stay totally focused.
24:00Okay, guys.
24:02Brain training.
24:03Form a circle.
24:05Pass the disgusting drink
24:06around the circle.
24:07Only passing it on
24:08when you've said
24:09a different word
24:10beginning with A.
24:12After one minute,
24:13the brain E holding the drink
24:15has to drink it.
24:16Ew.
24:17Oh, my God.
24:17Does everybody get it?
24:18Yeah, but what's in that?
24:20Milk, blue cheese,
24:21and just a dash of black pepper.
24:24I'm serious.
24:25I'm off camera now.
24:26It is revolting.
24:27Revolting or not,
24:28it's time to play.
24:30Addictive.
24:31Alphabet.
24:33Apocalypse.
24:34Odd rock.
24:35Animal.
24:36Arch.
24:37Apple-nesium.
24:39Apple-nesium?
24:40That's not a word, Luca.
24:42Alligator.
24:43Arsks.
24:45Erm,
24:46Ars-nesium.
24:47Ars-nesium?
24:49Luca's amygdala
24:50is working overtime,
24:51and his fear of the drink
24:53is making it impossible
24:54for him to think of a real word.
24:56Gong.
24:57That gong means a minute's up
24:59and Freddy has to drink
25:00the cheesy drink,
25:02which he does pretty fearlessly.
25:03I don't...
25:05Oh, you can taste the cheese!
25:09Training tip time.
25:11Don't fear the drink,
25:12welcome it as your friend.
25:13Oh, yeah.
25:15Hi, drink!
25:16If you imagine the drink
25:17as something nice,
25:18like hot chocolate,
25:19you'll stay calm.
25:20Fear in the drink
25:21will cloud your focus,
25:23and you won't be able
25:24to come up with any words at all.
25:26Anti-distablishment areas.
25:28The training tip has worked
25:30for Quiet Alice,
25:31a 28-letter word.
25:32Anything!
25:34Antarctica.
25:35Assuming.
25:36If you practise this technique at home,
25:38it will allow you
25:39to keep your emotions
25:40under control,
25:41stop you from panicking,
25:42and help you focus better
25:43in situations like exams.
25:47That's another minute up,
25:48but there seems to be a dispute
25:50over who's got to drink.
25:51He should drink it.
25:52I think he should drink it.
25:53No.
25:54Yes.
25:54You drink half of it,
25:55you drink the other half.
25:57That's it.
25:58I don't know.
25:59When the thing came to me
26:01and the thought letter,
26:02I let wait.
26:02Vomit!
26:03That's all I could think about.
26:05Can Alice bring this kind of focus
26:08to the next level?
26:09Will Fearless Freddy
26:10rise to the challenge?
26:11And will Luca's anxiety
26:13lead to elimination?
26:15Our five must now
26:16put their brain train
26:17into the test
26:18to overcome fear
26:19and compete
26:20for the blue brain belt.
26:23But wait.
26:24In an unexpected twist,
26:25Jack has come down
26:26with a cold
26:27and is forced to pull out.
26:28I was feeling really unwell
26:30all day
26:30and I just couldn't continue.
26:32I was really gutted
26:33that I had to leave the dojo
26:34and I thought I was focusing well.
26:36Under brain jitsu rules,
26:37if someone is unable
26:38to continue,
26:39then their place
26:40can be taken
26:41by the last person
26:42to be eliminated.
26:42So that's Patrick.
26:44I think the next task
26:46I should really just
26:48really concentrate
26:49on what we have to do.
26:50Well, they may have had
26:51a head start
26:51but there's no reason
26:52why I still couldn't
26:54be successful
26:54because I have done
26:55a lot of training
26:56by myself at home
26:57and I think I've been
26:58given a second chance
26:59and I should take it.
27:01So from this to this
27:03in the blink of an eye,
27:05the thought of winning
27:06really has got Patrick excited
27:07as he re-enters the dojo
27:09to compete
27:10for the blue brain belt.
27:11Things really are
27:12getting interesting
27:13so let's get on
27:14with it.
27:17Creepy Crawly Word Grab
27:19This level
27:20real test of mind
27:21over matter
27:22for brainies
27:23and will push them
27:24to really overcome
27:25their fear.
27:26Underneath the creepy crawlies
27:27lie an assortment
27:28of letters
27:29worth different points.
27:31Brainies have just
27:31one minute
27:32to plunge hands
27:33into tank
27:34and pick out
27:35up to seven letters
27:36each.
27:36They then have
27:37a further minute
27:38to make higher scoring
27:40words they can.
27:42To do well
27:43my brainies
27:45must block out
27:46the signals
27:46coming from their
27:47amygdala
27:47and ignore
27:48the creepy crawlies.
27:50The quicker
27:50they combat their fear
27:51the more time
27:52they'll have
27:53to pick out
27:53the high scoring
27:54letters.
28:00Brainies should
28:01dig deep
28:02under the maggots
28:02and keep a keen eye
28:03out for the golden
28:04letters
28:05because if they find
28:06one and manage
28:07to use it
28:07in their word
28:08they'll double
28:09their score.
28:09Freddie really
28:11is looking fearless.
28:15Sarah's making
28:16yucky faces
28:17she must concentrate
28:18on finding letters.
28:21Remember your
28:22training Luca
28:23and focus
28:24don't be scared
28:25of the maggots
28:25or the gong.
28:29Quiet Alice
28:30looking calm
28:30as usual
28:31she's learnt well.
28:33Comeback kid
28:34Patrick is actually
28:35choosing which
28:36letters to pick
28:36he really has been
28:38training at home.
28:42the gong
28:43means that
28:44their minute is up
28:44and now
28:45our brainies
28:46are another minute
28:47to make the longest
28:48word they can
28:48out of the letters
28:49they have collected.
28:51What is that
28:52Z?
28:53Oh I'm going to
28:54lose this.
28:55Was Luca
28:56trying to spell
28:57brain jitsu?
28:58I think he's
28:58going to struggle
28:59to make anything
28:59without any vowels.
29:01And Sarah
29:02hasn't really left
29:03herself with many
29:04options either.
29:05See if you
29:06can make a word
29:07from the anagram
29:08on the screen
29:08now.
29:14So how have
29:16our green belt
29:17holders fared?
29:20Game.
29:22That's seven points
29:23for fearless
29:23Freddy.
29:25Buzz just was.
29:26Your made up
29:27words may have
29:28fooled him in the
29:28room of mental
29:29nourishment Luca
29:29but you can't
29:30fool the she-han.
29:31No points.
29:33Um.
29:34Will the she-han
29:35allow it?
29:35Nope.
29:36No points
29:36for you either
29:37Sarah.
29:41Dolce.
29:43Sounds good
29:43Alice but sadly
29:45that's just not
29:46English.
29:46Now for the
29:47comeback kid
29:47Patrick.
29:49Jungle.
29:51Hold up.
29:52The she-han
29:52can smell
29:53something fishy
29:53and it's not
29:54sushi.
29:55Nice try
29:55Patrick but
29:56your N was
29:57really a U.
29:58No points.
29:59So that means
30:00Cheeky Freddy
30:00has won his
30:01blue belt but
30:02the other four
30:03have no score
30:04and we have a
30:05tie-break
30:05situation.
30:07Either Luca,
30:08Sarah, Alice
30:08or Patrick will
30:09be eliminated.
30:10It all hangs
30:12on the
30:12tie-break
30:14chopstick
30:15challenge.
30:17It's tough
30:18but fair.
30:19Our brainies
30:20have just five
30:20seconds to engage
30:21their occipital
30:22lobes, the
30:23seeing part of
30:24the brain and
30:25quickly work out
30:26how many
30:26chopsticks they
30:27see.
30:28Time to reveal
30:29our brainies
30:30answers.
30:3245 for Luca.
30:3475.
30:3650.
30:3852.
30:40The actual
30:41number is...
30:45So Luca's
30:46answer of
30:4745 was
30:48furthest from
30:48the correct
30:49number of
30:4981 chopsticks
30:50and he looks
30:51gutted because
30:52he must now
30:53leave the
30:53dojo for
30:54good.
31:02walk of eternal
31:04regret.
31:06Well, I didn't
31:08really, I just
31:09didn't have a
31:09strategy during
31:10the maggot game.
31:12I just pulled out
31:13mindless letters so
31:14I had, you know,
31:15just, I can make
31:16a word.
31:17By the time I was
31:18through that
31:19chopstick thing, I
31:20knew I was out.
31:20To come this
31:21far and then to
31:22lose, it's just
31:24really annoying.
31:26That's all.
31:30So, with only
31:31three levels to
31:32go, Freddie,
31:33Sarah, Alice and
31:34Patrick proudly
31:35wear their blue
31:36brain belts.
31:37I think the
31:39training did help
31:39in the way that
31:40you, you had to
31:42pretend that the
31:43maggots weren't
31:43there, that they
31:44were your friend,
31:44they're not going
31:45to hurt you.
31:45Because the fact
31:46is that they're
31:46not.
31:47It was like, well,
31:48scary and disgusting
31:49and they were like
31:49little and bleh.
31:51I've been given
31:51this second chance
31:52and I should use
31:53it.
31:53I made blue.
31:55All I have to do
31:56now is red, brown
31:57and black.
31:59Seems easy, but
32:00it's not.
32:03Rain, detour!
32:05Brainy, not so
32:07brainy.
32:10Who's the clever
32:11clogs and whose
32:12brain needs a lot
32:12more training?
32:14All the world's a
32:15stage and all the
32:15men and women
32:16merely players.
32:17Just one of the
32:18many great lines
32:19that came from the
32:19February pen of
32:20Mr. William
32:21Shakespeare.
32:22In total, he
32:23wrote nearly 40
32:23plays and 154
32:25poems called
32:26sonnets and over
32:27400 years later
32:28was still reading
32:29them.
32:29Pretty impressive
32:30stuff, Will.
32:31Your poor hand
32:31must have really
32:32ached after all
32:33that writing now
32:34out.
32:35About 100 years
32:36later, another
32:36writer, a French
32:37teaser called
32:38Jean-Baptiste
32:39Vivienne de
32:39Chateaubrun, spent
32:4140 years perfecting
32:42just two measly
32:43plays.
32:44And if that
32:44weren't bad
32:45enough, justice
32:46is on the
32:46point of finishing
32:47them off.
32:47His housekeeper
32:48only goes and
32:49mistakes the
32:49manuscripts for
32:50wrapping paper and
32:52puts the kibosh on
32:53his life's work.
32:54Oh, gutted.
32:55Brainy Shakespeare,
32:57not so brainy
32:58Jean-Baptiste.
33:01Rain, detour!
33:05Tension in
33:06Brain Jitsu Dojo
33:07is mounting as
33:08now just four
33:09young hopefuls
33:10remain to compete
33:11under watchful eye
33:12of Xi'an.
33:13Their journey has
33:14more twists than
33:15Japanese pretzel.
33:17Cheeky Freddy,
33:17confident after
33:18winning last
33:19challenge.
33:20Sarah, ranked
33:21first of girls
33:21four times in
33:22row.
33:23I'm like really,
33:24really close to
33:25winning the black
33:26belt and it would
33:26be a shame to
33:27like sort of lose
33:28in these rounds.
33:29Quiet Alice could
33:31be Dark Horse in
33:32this mind race.
33:34And come back
33:35Kid Patrick who
33:36made dramatic exit
33:37after losing
33:37Stare Off with
33:38Freddy, only to
33:40return at next
33:40level when Jack
33:41fall ill.
33:42I think I'm
33:43definitely back to
33:43win it.
33:44Only two brainy's
33:45will make it to
33:46final test, the
33:47table of supreme
33:48focus, where they
33:49must move ball with
33:50power of mind.
33:52The Brain Jitsu
33:53Black Brain Belt is
33:54within their grasp as
33:55it's time for
33:56level five, Red
33:59Bolt.
34:01Now, if you've
34:03just taken up
34:03competitive bog
34:04snorkelling, then
34:05you might be
34:06interested to know
34:07that your new
34:07hobby is doing
34:08wonders for the
34:09old grey matter,
34:10exercising both
34:12the thinking part of
34:13the brain, the
34:13cerebrum, and the
34:15doing part, the
34:16cerebellum.
34:18You see, doing new
34:19things increases the
34:20flow of blood into
34:21your head, which
34:22keeps your brain
34:23cells topped up
34:24with the oxygen
34:25they need to
34:26perform at their
34:27best.
34:27So, in level
34:28five, my brainy's
34:30are going to be
34:31challenged to learn
34:32new skills.
34:33Now, you can speed
34:34up how quickly the
34:35brain takes in new
34:37stuff, and this is
34:38what our brainy's are
34:39going to train for
34:40now.
34:41Room of Mental
34:43Nourishment
34:45It's our brainy's
34:46fourth visit to the
34:47Room of Mental
34:48Nourishment, and
34:49for this brain
34:50training exercise,
34:51they're going to be
34:51really working their
34:52brains by learning
34:54something new.
34:56Brain training.
34:57Spin the drumstick
34:59between your fingers
35:00for as long as
35:00possible.
35:02Remember?
35:02Good idea,
35:03it's good.
35:03Well, okay.
35:05This is one hand,
35:06doesn't it?
35:06Does it say one
35:07hand?
35:07No, probably.
35:08I'm just doing it
35:09in between my fingers,
35:09because it says it
35:10in between your fingers,
35:11not between your hands.
35:13Two hands would be
35:13too easy, Freddie.
35:15This exercise needs
35:16to be taxing, so the
35:17thinking part of your
35:18brain and the doing
35:19part of your brain
35:20are equally pushed.
35:21All you have to do
35:22is sort of control it.
35:23Guys, just look at me.
35:24Just all you have to do
35:25is put your index finger
35:26over your ring finger
35:29and just keep doing that.
35:30Take a look at that
35:31and do that.
35:32You kind of have it
35:33between your index finger
35:34and your third finger
35:35and then you kind of
35:35just spin it between
35:36your index finger
35:37and your ring finger.
35:38Can't you just
35:38put it through your fingers
35:40and change every time
35:41you want to change it
35:42and stuff?
35:43You just do this.
35:44Just put it on.
35:45So, come on, watch.
35:46Watch.
35:49Training tip time.
35:51Listen, guys.
35:52Be confident in yourself.
35:54Look in the mirror
35:54and tell yourself
35:55you can do it.
35:56I can do it.
35:58You can look in the mirror.
36:00My smash.
36:01Very funny.
36:02Cheeky, Freddie.
36:04I can do it.
36:04I can do it.
36:05I can do it.
36:06I can do it.
36:06I'm the best.
36:07I'm amazing.
36:08I know.
36:08I can do it.
36:09I know.
36:09Oh, yeah.
36:10You really reckon
36:10you're the best.
36:11I can do it.
36:12Come on, man.
36:13You're great.
36:15You're better than Freddie.
36:15I think...
36:16Yeah.
36:18Both boys seem
36:20very self-assured already
36:21but boosting your confidence
36:22really can help
36:23if you're learning
36:24something new.
36:25Stay positive
36:26and you're much more likely
36:28to succeed
36:28at your new skill.
36:30I am the best.
36:32I love me.
36:33I rule.
36:34So, will Freddie
36:35and Patrick's
36:36boys' confidence
36:37help them
36:37at the next level?
36:38Alice and Sarah
36:39don't seem to have
36:40the same natural
36:41self-assurance.
36:42Will this lead
36:43to their elimination?
36:45Only time will tell
36:46as our four
36:47must now put
36:48their train
36:48into the test
36:49to learn a new skill
36:50for their red brain belt.
36:55Chop, chop,
36:56don't drop.
36:58To win
36:59red brain belt
37:00brainies must remain
37:01mentally confident
37:02as they learn
37:03new physical skill.
37:05Remaining four
37:05must keep ball
37:06in air flow
37:07and guide it
37:08along obstacle course
37:10through hoops
37:11and into basket.
37:12It is race
37:13against clock
37:14but brainies
37:15must remain confident.
37:16There is five
37:17second penalty
37:18every time
37:18ball drops.
37:20Brainy with
37:20slowest time
37:21will be eliminated.
37:23The tip for my
37:24brainies
37:24in this next task
37:25is to
37:27remain calm
37:28and think
37:29positive thoughts.
37:30Giving in
37:31to frustration
37:31will only lessen
37:33their focus
37:33and slow them up.
37:36The atmosphere
37:37in the dojo
37:38is hotter
37:38than wasabi
37:39as all four
37:40brainies
37:41get off
37:41to a shaky start.
37:42They must achieve
37:43mental focus
37:44to master
37:44this new
37:45physical skill.
37:47Freddy
37:48is as cheeky
37:48as the rear end
37:49of a sumo wrestler
37:50but can his
37:51confidence
37:52sustain the pressure?
38:04It's a strong
38:05finish for Freddy
38:06but is it enough
38:07to get the red?
38:11Patrick's ego
38:12took a bigger battering
38:13than tempura vegetables
38:14when he was
38:15knocked out
38:15at level three.
38:16Has the training
38:17given him
38:18his confidence
38:18back?
38:28Trouble with the
38:29bar in the middle
38:30there
38:30but excellent
38:31basket work
38:31at the end.
38:33Both girls
38:34didn't seem
38:35as mentally
38:35positive
38:35as the boys
38:36in their training.
38:37Will it affect
38:38their physical
38:38performances?
38:42Sarah's mind
38:42must stay
38:43confident
38:43and focused
38:44or she won't
38:45be able
38:45to control
38:46her body
38:46and her dream
38:47of the black belt
38:48will fall
38:49like origami.
38:59Oh, a disastrous
39:00ending.
39:01Will Alice
39:02fare better?
39:04Alice isn't
39:05as naturally
39:06confident as
39:06the others
39:07and it seems
39:07to be getting
39:08her in trouble
39:08here.
39:22so bad ending
39:24for both girls
39:24but who'll
39:25be eliminated?
39:26Time for the
39:26results.
39:31Freddy finished
39:32in 47 seconds
39:33but he had
39:34nine penalties
39:35which means
39:35his total
39:36is one minute
39:3732 seconds.
39:39Sarah's time
39:40was one minute
39:4139 seconds
39:42with 19 penalties
39:43so a total
39:44so a total
39:44of 3 minutes
39:4514 seconds.
39:47Alice finished
39:48in 58 seconds
39:49with 15 penalties
39:50giving a total
39:51time of 2 minutes
39:5213 seconds.
39:53It all hangs
39:54on Patrick.
39:55He completed
39:56the course
39:56in 1 minute
39:573 seconds
39:58and with 16 penalties
40:00his total
40:01is 2 minutes
40:0123 seconds.
40:04So that's
40:05two wins
40:05in a row
40:06for Freddy.
40:07He's looking
40:07unstoppable
40:08but for Sarah
40:09it's sayonara.
40:16Walk of
40:17eternal
40:18regret.
40:20I'm a bit
40:20sad but
40:21I'm also glad
40:22that I got
40:23to like
40:23two rounds
40:24before I
40:25win the
40:25black belt
40:26and I'm
40:27really like
40:27proud of my
40:28achievement.
40:29I think
40:29Freddy has
40:29a good chance
40:30of winning.
40:31He's sort of
40:31like pulled
40:32himself through
40:33all the rounds
40:33and I think
40:36he might win.
40:41So with only
40:42two levels
40:43left
40:43Freddy,
40:44Alice and
40:44Patrick
40:45stand proud
40:45in red.
40:46I think
40:47the people
40:47on the
40:47table
40:48of
40:48supreme
40:48focus
40:49will
40:49probably
40:49be
40:51Freddy
40:52and maybe
40:53me.
40:53I have
40:54no idea
40:54what's
40:54going to
40:54happen
40:54next
40:55but
40:56I'm
40:56just
40:57so
40:57nervous.
40:58I think
40:58I could
40:59go all
40:59the way.
41:10it's this
41:11level
41:11which will
41:12decide
41:12which
41:13two
41:13of my
41:14remaining
41:14brainies
41:15will go
41:16on to
41:16battle it
41:17out
41:17for the
41:18black belt.
41:20Now imagine
41:21you're in
41:22your school
41:22play.
41:23As well as
41:23lines to
41:24remember and
41:25moving around
41:25on stage
41:26there's also
41:27the audience
41:27watching you.
41:28It's remembering
41:29stuff under
41:30pressure like
41:31this that
41:32level six
41:32is all
41:33about.
41:35It centres
41:36around three
41:37areas of the
41:37brain.
41:38The seeing
41:39part,
41:39the occipital
41:40lobes,
41:41the memory
41:42part,
41:42the temporal
41:43lobes and
41:44the movement
41:45part,
41:46the cerebellum.
41:47To the
41:48max.
41:50Room of
41:51mental
41:51nourishment.
41:53With only
41:54three brainies
41:55remaining,
41:56this penultimate
41:57brain training
41:57challenge is
41:58all about
41:58improving your
41:59memory.
42:00Sorry,
42:01what was I
42:01saying?
42:03Brain
42:03training.
42:04Memorise
42:05the sequence
42:06of objects.
42:07Okay,
42:07each do a
42:08table.
42:10Remember
42:10it as a
42:11story,
42:11for instance,
42:12so like,
42:12the frog
42:13got crushed
42:13by a
42:14hammer and
42:14so they
42:15flushed it
42:15down the
42:16loop.
42:19So in
42:20this task,
42:20our three
42:21remaining
42:21red belt
42:22holders are
42:23exercising their
42:23occipital lobes,
42:25or seeing
42:25part of their
42:26brain,
42:27and their
42:27temporal lobes,
42:28the memory
42:29bank.
42:30The gong
42:30means mix
42:31the object
42:31up,
42:32and when
42:32they're good
42:32and mixed,
42:33our brainies
42:34have to pick
42:35out the
42:35random objects
42:36they have
42:36memorised.
42:38Take your
42:39arm,
42:39guys.
42:41Passing
42:42the water
42:42glasses.
42:44Be that
42:45right.
42:49Are you
42:50too confident
42:51you've got
42:51it right?
42:52Definitely.
42:53They've done
42:53pretty well,
42:54but here's a
42:54training tip.
42:55Create a
42:56story linking
42:57the objects
42:57together.
42:58That's a bit
42:59like what we
42:59did,
43:00isn't it?
43:00Yeah,
43:00pretty much.
43:01Alice second
43:01guessed the
43:02tip at the
43:02start of the
43:03training,
43:03so she has
43:04an idea to
43:05make it
43:05harder this
43:06time.
43:07Okay,
43:07how about
43:07this time
43:08we jumble
43:08them up,
43:09put them
43:09in a different
43:10order,
43:10and let's
43:11say we
43:12have 15
43:13seconds to
43:14make up a
43:15story and
43:15link all our
43:16stories together
43:16this time.
43:17Cool.
43:18Let's go.
43:22There's a
43:23picture of a
43:23rat wearing
43:24sunglasses.
43:25And the frog
43:26wanted to smash
43:27it because he
43:27didn't like the
43:28rat.
43:28The gnome
43:29decided to
43:29poison the
43:30chicken.
43:31Yeah,
43:31the chicken
43:31came out
43:32and was
43:33flushed down
43:33the loo
43:34and was
43:35recycled into
43:35banana which
43:36was stuck on
43:37the top of
43:37the Eiffel
43:37Tower.
43:42Memory tests
43:43like this
43:43are a great
43:44way to
43:44train your
43:45brain.
43:46Next time
43:46you go
43:46shopping,
43:47make a
43:47story out
43:48of your
43:48list and
43:49see if
43:49you can
43:49remember
43:50everything
43:50on it.
43:56Alice
44:01really
44:02shone in
44:02the
44:02training,
44:03but will
44:03she apply
44:04it to
44:04the
44:04task
44:04ahead or
44:05will
44:05Patrick
44:06and
44:06Freddie
44:06use
44:07Alice's
44:07tip to
44:08triumph.
44:09Our
44:09final
44:10three
44:10must
44:10now
44:11put
44:11their
44:11memory
44:11train
44:11into
44:12the
44:12test
44:12to
44:12win
44:13their
44:13brown
44:13brain
44:14belt
44:14and
44:15secure
44:15their

44:16on

44:16of

44:20Super

44:21dizzy
44:21dash.
44:23Each

44:33in

44:34Then

44:36to
44:37cross
44:37balancing

44:39images
44:40from
44:40ten
44:41hanging
44:41above
44:41them.
44:44Then
44:45must
44:45arrange
44:45images
44:46in
44:46reverse
44:47order.
44:48When
44:49they are
44:50happy with
44:50their
44:50selection,
44:51a hit
44:51of
44:52gong

44:52clock.
44:57My
44:57tip
44:58for
44:58the
44:58braineese
44:58is to
44:59keep
44:59focused

46:19She's
