00:00DC would like to state that no braineese or insects were harmed in the making of this program
00:03and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:09Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:12To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain
00:16for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:19This is Brain Jitsu.
00:27Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as samurai sword,
00:33he is brain master, he is the sensei.
00:37Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jitsu.
00:42Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:48My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training
00:52in the comfort of their own home.
00:54A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:02I found the training really fun, it was really enjoyable.
01:05I did it, like, a lot, but I'm quite nervous at the moment.
01:08I did all the training and, well, it was really easy.
01:12I'm really confident that I'm going to do well today.
01:14I really want that black belt, and I will claim it at the end.
01:19Now, my braineese must put their training into practice
01:22by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:25Level one.
01:27No, no, vault!
01:30Take a look at all these chocolates.
01:32Mmm, yummy.
01:33But how many white rabbits are there?
01:36If you got six, then congratulations.
01:40You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:43This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:50The seven braineese who use their occipital lobes the best
01:53will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where their training will continue.
01:58The one who fails will be left outside.
02:01Ho!
02:01Feel the burn.
02:04Enter the dojo!
02:09Our braineese must answer four questions by studying the different shapes and numbers on the board in front of them.
02:14Get the questions right, and they'll be left with a four-digit code,
02:18which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:23But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese,
02:27one of either Hannah, Tajani, Ritika, Sean, Leone, Michael, Tamara or Jonathan
02:34will be left outside uneliminated.
02:37A bang of the gong reveals the four questions.
02:42How many green stars are there?
02:51How many black numbers are there?
03:00How many orange number fives are there?
03:09How many shapes do not have numbers?
03:17The cord our braineese are looking for is 1-8-6-5.
03:27First off his stool is Sean, with Hannah not far behind.
03:31Do they have the cord, or have they gone too soon?
03:35Faster than you can say deep-fried dumplings, the rest of our braineese join them.
03:39All except Tajani, who's having to wait his turn.
03:45But Sean's not found that cord, and he's having to return for another look.
03:51Tajani gets his chance.
03:54And his lock springs open at the first attempt.
04:01Everyone else, meanwhile, has had to return for second helpings.
04:06A quick reminder that the cord our braineese are searching for is 1-8-6-5.
04:11As there's one green star, 8 black numbers, 6 orange number fives, and 5 shapes without numbers.
04:21Which means that Sean still hasn't found the right cord.
04:27Hannah is next to unlock a piece of brain, with Jonathan hot on the reels.
04:32But the rest of our braineese are still struggling.
04:35Come on, braineese, work those occipital lobes.
04:47With three more braineese safely through, it's now a straight fight between Leone and Sean for the last place in
04:53the dojo.
04:57Sean's up again, as he found the cord this time.
05:01Suffering sumos, he's still not got it.
05:09And this time, Leone's lock pops open, which means she's in and Sean is out.
05:17While seven have proven themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training, for Sean, it's the end
05:24of the road.
05:25I think the problem was because I was trying to read really quickly, and I just read something wrong, and
05:30I got the wrong number.
05:32I just feel gutted.
05:36So, with six levels to go, it's time for Tijani, Hannah, Jonathan, Tamara, Ritika, Michael and Leone to receive their
05:46yellow brain belts.
05:47The person I think is the one to beat is TJ, because, well, he did it so fast, and almost
05:53straight away he got it.
05:54I think that I've got weird taste to get the black belt.
05:57I may have come last, but this time I'll nail it, and I'll get the black belt.
06:04Rain Tito.
06:07In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
06:12Level two.
06:13Orange belt.
06:16We do things every day without even thinking about it, like throwing a ball.
06:20But next time you're with your mates, try throwing it with the arm you wouldn't normally use.
06:26Yeah, a lot more difficult, isn't it?
06:28If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving, the frontal lobes.
06:35And that's what level two is all about.
06:38Taking something you normally do without thinking, and doing it differently.
06:43Work it!
06:43To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainees are going to need some training.
06:50Room of Mental Nourishment.
06:54This is the Room of Mental Nourishment, where our young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
07:03The more seriously they take their training, the better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
07:09And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
07:15Brain training.
07:16Take it in turns to call out the action on your cards.
07:19Everyone has to do the opposite.
07:22Keep tongue in mouth.
07:24Both arms down.
07:26It looks like our brainies' home training has paid off.
07:30Touch nose with left hand.
07:33Spin around clockwise.
07:39Touch right here.
07:41Hang on, though.
07:43Michael's getting as mixed up as a bowl of noodles.
07:47Time for a tip.
07:49Don't rush.
07:50Pause for two seconds to think before you react.
07:53Top tip, Hannah.
07:54You see, spending a moment to think before rushing in really can improve your focus and help you to perform
08:00better.
08:01Right knee up.
08:03Opposites, Michael.
08:05I don't understand this game.
08:06Oh, dear, oh, dear.
08:08I got a few wrong about two because at the beginning when we started the game, I wasn't paying attention
08:13to the instructions.
08:15Yeah, I'll definitely use the tip in the other hand because it makes you think before you say I'll do
08:18anything.
08:20So, can Michael become unmodelled in time for the next task?
08:24Will Hannah remember to stop and think when the heat is on?
08:29It's time to find out as our seven brainies now put their frontal lobe training to the test.
08:35Guardian of the Dojo and Task Adjudicator the She-Han will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:41Catchy-feely boxes!
08:45Inside seven boxes is hidden item, five of which match with item on shopping list.
08:51Brainies must take in turns to reach into each box and guess what inside.
08:57Not by looking, but by feeling.
08:59If they think that item matches with one on list, they must try to remember number of box it is
09:06in.
09:07Once brainies have felt all seven boxes, then have 15 seconds to identify which box they are in.
09:16Brainies with least number of correct answer will be eliminated from Dojo.
09:22My brainy tip for this task is to focus on just the items on the list and mentally tick them
09:29off as they fill each box.
09:31Work those frontal lobes.
09:34Our brainy's wait nervously for the gong.
09:37If you want to know what they don't, here's what's on their shopping list today.
09:42In blue box number two we have jelly.
09:46In yellow box number six, an apple.
09:49Green box three hides crisps.
09:54Pickled onions are in red box seven.
09:57And in orange box number five, a pair of socks.
10:00But there are also two distractions for our brainy's.
10:03In pink box number one are maggots.
10:05And in purple box four, some bandages.
10:08And if all that wasn't enough to make our brainy's think differently,
10:12you'll have noticed we've also jumbled the box numbers.
10:16Three, two, one, it's going the gong.
10:21Brainy's have just five seconds to identify each item before moving on to the next box.
10:26Unable to see, the challenge is to use their training to think in a new way.
10:31Their hands must become their eyes as they focus solely on their sense of touch.
10:37Confident Jonathan dives into those maggots.
10:40He looks calm, but will he now remember to rule out box number one?
10:46Tiziani's found the jelly, but can he remember that it's in box number two?
10:51Tamara's not too sure about those pickled onions.
10:54Go on, Tamara, they won't bite you.
10:58Are Michael's frontal lobes helping him to identify what's in this box as crisps?
11:04Leone's also found those maggots.
11:06And unlike Jonathan, she don't look too happy.
11:11Will Hannah confuse the bandages in box four with the socks in number five?
11:17And can Ritika remember the location of the apple?
11:23That's all seven boxes.
11:26Our brainy's now have 15 seconds to work out their answers.
11:30Here's that list again.
11:32And here are the box numbers.
11:43So, who's remembered their training and got their brains to think in a new way?
11:50Tiziani matched two items with the correct box.
11:53Hannah matched all five items.
11:56As did confident Jonathan.
11:58And Tamara.
12:01Ritika matched three items.
12:04The same score as Michael.
12:07While Leone, like Tiziani, matched just the two.
12:11Which means we've got ourselves a tie-break.
12:14Leone and Tiziani will get one chance to prove the power of their mind and save themselves.
12:20It all hangs on the...
12:22Tie-break Chopsticks Challenge!
12:26It's tough, but fair.
12:28Our brainies must use their occipital lobes, the same part of their brain,
12:32and work out how many chopsticks they see.
12:35They have just five seconds to write down their answers.
12:38If they lose focus and panic, it'll be all over.
12:42Time to reveal our brainies' answers.
12:44Fifty-one.
12:48Fifty-one.
12:48Sixty.
12:50Spooky kabuki.
12:52The actual number is 51.
12:55Which means Tiziani was exactly right.
12:58And although Leone went close, she must now leave the dojo.
13:08Walk of eternal regret.
13:12I think it went wrong for me because I was really scared and I was really nervous about what I'd
13:18be touching and what would be in there.
13:20And I'm just really glad that I actually got through the first level.
13:25So with five levels to go, it's Tiziani, Hannah, Jonathan, Tamara, Ritika and Michael who go on to get their
13:34orange brain belts.
13:36I'm really shocked because I thought that she was going to get the right answer, but I got the right
13:42answer, 51.
13:43When I put my hand in the maggots, it wasn't very nice and I thought it was straw, but then
13:48I realised it was maggots because it caught up my arm.
13:50I was really relieved when I got through because I really need to go to the loo.
13:57Brain Tito.
14:01Brainy, not so brainy.
14:04Who's the clever clogs and who's brain needs a lot more training?
14:08Mount Everest, what a beauty.
14:10Now these two geysers, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, was the first to climb it.
14:15In the ultimate test of mind over matter, not only did they conquer a blooming great mountain,
14:20but they also had to battle against snow, ice and temperatures that would freeze your thermals off.
14:25Mount-tastic.
14:26Now these look like brave and extreme conditions of another kind, the Sahara Marathon Runners.
14:31They think nothing of legging it 4,500 miles across the Sahara Desert in temperatures well over 100 degrees.
14:36Whoo, and it takes these jokers a hundred days just to reach the finish line.
14:41If they ever get there, I'm tired just thinking about it.
14:44Brainy, Hillary and Tenzing.
14:45Not so brainy, Sahara Runners.
14:50Brain Jitsu.
14:54Competition in Brain Jitsu Dojo hotting up.
14:56Only six brainy now remain to battle it out under watchful eye of Sheehan.
15:02Tizani, first secure place in Dojo.
15:05Tough Tamara.
15:08Hannah.
15:09I'm really happy that I came first.
15:11Ritika.
15:13Confident Jonathan.
15:14I'm really confident that I'm going to do well today.
15:16And Michael.
15:17I was really relieved when I got through because I really needed to go to the loo.
15:22Challenge is about to get even tougher.
15:24Only two brainy will make through to final test.
15:27Table of supreme focus.
15:30Where must move all with power of mind for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
15:36Here's time for...
15:38Level 3.
15:40Green Belt.
15:42Now, we all like to chat.
15:44But did you know that using words to communicate is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown
15:50so incredibly powerful?
15:52And that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain.
15:56Now, if all that's doing your head in, allow me to explain.
16:01Imagine you're on a movie set where each crew member is focusing on their own particular job.
16:07But the director, he has to be aware of what everyone's doing.
16:12It's the same with the brain.
16:14There's the left half, which deals with the details.
16:17And there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
16:20This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus by working one half of their brain under pressure.
16:28Hey, pump it up!
16:30Dream of Mental Nourishment.
16:35It's our brainy's second visit to the room of Mental Nourishment, where once again they'll train in preparation for the
16:41next challenge.
16:42Which, remember, is all about using the two halves of the brain to communicate.
16:48Get into two groups.
16:50One group describes the picture in front of them.
16:53The other group draws it.
16:54So, while the girls use the right side of their brain to explain how to draw their pig, the boys
16:59must use the left side of their brain to interpret the girls' instructions.
17:03Hannah gets the ball rolling.
17:05OK, go to the right line of three and go up to D and draw a small circle and mirror
17:13it on their underside too.
17:17And before you know it, the boys' masterpiece is beginning to take shape.
17:22Draw a small circle.
17:24And it's not just Hannah's instructions the boys are finding helpful.
17:28And then go to the centre of four to the centre of D and draw a small circle again.
17:33But then faster than you can say turkey teriyaki, the girls' communication skills desert them.
17:38Bottom to the line underneath D, then draw an arch to the left, the right hand of three to the
17:46bottom of F.
17:48Oh, I don't know. Can you repeat that?
17:51Time for a training tip.
17:54Start with an overall shape, then add the details.
17:57What kind of shape...
17:58Top advice. But I'd say that's what our brainies have been doing anyway.
18:02What this lot need to remember is to keep their instructions clear and precise.
18:06There's the right side of three.
18:09Time to add the finishing touches.
18:11And then from there, draw a swirl up to the halfway of F.
18:15I think I know what it is.
18:17What?
18:17It looks like a pig.
18:19Yeah, it's a pig.
18:21Nice one.
18:22Hey, well done, brainies.
18:24I think it's because of my good drawing.
18:26I thought it was better that if, like, when we work as a team,
18:29because when they ask questions and we answer them,
18:32they kind of get more of a picture of what we're trying to say.
18:35I think we did really good in this challenge
18:37because we worked as a team.
18:39Each person had a different job.
18:41Yeah, we're like a well-functioning machine.
18:43Can helpful Hannah take her helpful communication skills into the dojo?
18:48And will Tajani function quite as well when the heat is on?
18:52It's time to find out as our six now put their communication training to the test.
19:01Punch through number two.
19:04This is test of communication skill.
19:06So, six brainy must first divide into teams of two by drawing chopsticks.
19:12Quickly as possible, teams must punch six bucket containing number that go to make some.
19:18Pairs must decide who is guider, who is puncher.
19:22Puncher is blindfolded and relying on guider to help find bucket.
19:27When all six bucket punched, brainy stop clock by shouting,
19:32Brain Jitsu!
19:34Quicker they punch bucket, more time they have to pick up number and make some.
19:39When brainy happy with answer, hit the gong!
19:43First two team to work out correct answer, get green belt and advance to next level.
19:48One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
19:51The key to success here is for the guider to use the right side of their brain
19:56to follow their team-mates' progress and give them clear instructions.
20:01For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain
20:06to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
20:11First to put their communication training to the test are Ritika and Tajani.
20:16Step forward.
20:17With Ritika calling the shots and Tajani under the blindfold...
20:21Punch.
20:23The two get off to a decent start.
20:25Step forward.
20:27Punch.
20:29Step right.
20:31Punch.
20:35Punch again.
20:36But then quickly run into trouble as Ritika's radar goes haywire.
20:42Punch.
20:44Step a tiny bit forward more.
20:47Punch.
20:49Go left.
20:51Punch.
20:54Brain Jitsu.
20:56That's 1 minute 37 seconds, not the quickest of times,
20:59and these two will have to wait to discover
21:01if it's brought them any extra time to find their numbers.
21:06Next up, our confident Jonathan and helpful Anna.
21:09Forward two.
21:12Right two.
21:14And Jonathan looks to have learnt from his training,
21:16using the right side of his brain to tell Hannah exactly how many steps she should take.
21:21And punch.
21:22OK.
21:23Forward one.
21:25Left one.
21:27Punch.
21:28Punch.
21:31Brain Jitsu.
21:33The pair stop the clock in a knockout 1 minute 4 seconds.
21:39Go forward.
21:40Last up are tough Tamara and Michael.
21:43Punch.
21:45Go forward.
21:46As the taller of the two, it's Michael who's opted to do the punching.
21:50Punch.
21:51Punch.
21:52Even so, one or two of his jabs are landing wider than the match.
21:57Right a bit more.
22:00Punch.
22:02Go forward.
22:04Go right.
22:06Punch.
22:08Go left.
22:10Punch.
22:11Brain Jitsu.
22:13The two stop the clock in 1 minute 27.
22:16Pretty good, but not as good as Jonathan and Hannah,
22:19who set off first to find their numbers.
22:27Here's what our brainies are looking for.
22:29See if you can work out the sum.
22:32Remember, the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level.
22:41Swifter than samurais on skis, Jonathan and Hannah are first to bang their gong.
22:52But Ritika and Tijani are taking forever to solve their sum.
22:58At last they finish, but do the numbers add up?
23:0712 times 3 minus 30 equals 6.
23:10That looks good.
23:11But as the last to finish, Ritika and Tijani will be hoping that one of the other teams have tripped
23:16up.
23:17No problems though for Jonathan and Hannah.
23:20But what's this?
23:2230 minus 12 times 3 equals 6.
23:25I don't think so.
23:27Tamara and Michael haven't made their sum,
23:30which means it's they who'll be battling it out to avoid elimination in the...
23:35Stare off!
23:38With just one green belt up for grabs,
23:40both brainies must use all their powers of focus to fight the urge to blink.
23:45The first to falter will be eliminated.
24:00Oh, and it's Michael who's first to drop his guard,
24:03which means tough Tamara stays in and Michael goes out.
24:12Walk of eternal regret.
24:16I think we didn't work properly because we rushed it too much.
24:20I think I mixed around two numbers and I couldn't concentrate properly.
24:27So with four levels to go, it's Tijani, Hannah, Jonathan, Tamara and Ritika who get green belts.
24:35When I found out I was in the Stare off, I was really, really upset.
24:38But now that I've won, I feel really good now.
24:41And when I came first, I felt really confident and I feel really good now and I really want to
24:45win.
24:45I think my biggest rival would have to be Hannah because she's doing just a little bit better than me.
25:02This fourth level requires our brainies to master a primitive part of the brain called the amygdala,
25:15Remember the last time you felt afraid or panic, eh?
25:18Maybe that time you were about to take a really crucial penalty.
25:22Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
25:26Now, stress can make you lose focus.
25:29Fact.
25:30Fact.
25:30Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control.
25:36Room of mental nourishment.
25:40We're back in the room of mental nourishment and it's time for our five remaining green belt holders to overcome
25:45fear and stay focused.
25:49Form a circle, pass the disgusting drink around the circle, only passing it on when you have said, a different
25:56animal.
25:57After one minute, the brainy holding the drink has to drink it.
26:01What's the drink?
26:02That, Hannah, is a glass of cod liver oil.
26:05I'll stop.
26:06It's B.
26:08Aardvark.
26:10Dolphin.
26:12Elephant.
26:14Shark.
26:14Round one and our brainy's are doing well.
26:17Crab.
26:19Shark.
26:20Until Ritika turns repeater.
26:23Hang on, I said shark.
26:26So you can't repeat it.
26:31What other animal is there?
26:33I'm not quite good.
26:34Okay, a fly.
26:36Fish.
26:37Lime.
26:39There's the gong and it's Tajani who's been left holding the cup of yuck.
26:43Drink, drink, drink.
26:44Come on.
26:45Drink it.
26:46Come on.
26:50Yes, he is.
26:52Oh, God.
26:55Time for a training tip.
26:59Tip.
27:00Welcome the drink as your friend.
27:01It holds the answer.
27:02It holds the answer to what?
27:04I think it means, like, don't say, oh, that's just usking, I don't want to have that, and
27:09then panic.
27:10Kind of welcome it and think for a second or two, and then you'll get it.
27:14Spot on, Jonathan.
27:16You see, imagining the drink as something nice like a fruit smoothie will help you to stay
27:21calm.
27:22Being afraid of it will only mess up your focus.
27:24I'll go first.
27:26Zebra.
27:27Werewolf.
27:28Horse.
27:30Cow.
27:31Rat.
27:32Armed with that tip, our brainies are fairly rattling along, doing a great job of keeping
27:37their fear at bay.
27:38Um, uh...
27:40But hang on, confident Jonathan's had a complete mental block.
27:44Has he let his amygdala get the better of him?
27:51It's a costly mistake, because he'll now have to down the drink a stink.
27:57Aw.
28:00I'm nasty.
28:02It tasted horrible.
28:04It tasted like, um, you know, cod, but just horrible and raw, and as if it just had come
28:10out the sea.
28:11Well, I think I poised a bit, because I couldn't think of any other animal.
28:15I know at school I'll always fail at animalology.
28:19So, will confident Jonathan be able to recover from his training setback?
28:24And will Tijani ever get over the taste of that cod liver oil?
28:28It's time to find out, as our five are challenged to overcome their fears once again.
28:35Creepy, grody, word grab.
28:38This level will test of mind over matter for brainies, and will push them to really overcome
28:44their fear.
28:44Underneath the creepy crawlies, lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
28:49Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank, and pick out up to seven letters
28:54each.
28:55They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
29:01To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala, and ignore the creepy
29:08crawlies.
29:09The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high-scoring
29:13letters.
29:23Underneath this pile of crickets are an extra five golden letters.
29:27If our brainies manage to use one in their word, they'll double their score.
29:33There's the gong.
29:34But while the others get stuck in, Ritika's definitely unhappy, flapping her arms about instead
29:39her searching for those letters.
29:43If she can't control her fear, she'll stand no chance.
29:49Meanwhile, Hannah looks as calm as a sumo in a pie-eating competition, totally ignoring
29:55the signals coming from her amygdala.
30:08And the minute's up.
30:09Our brainies now have a further minute to make the highest scoring word they can from their
30:13letters.
30:18Tijani looks like he's made a word already.
30:20But will he regret not using all the time available?
30:24Oh dear, poor old Hannah's board looks like a vowel-free zone.
30:28How on earth she'll make a score from that lot, I do not know.
30:32See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now.
30:43Where's the second gong?
30:44How have our brainies done?
30:48Phone.
30:49That's a terrific ten points for Tijani.
30:54No word.
30:56With only consonants to choose from, there's no score for Helpful Hannah.
31:02Toss.
31:03Six points for Confident Jonathan.
31:06Hits.
31:08With that golden T in her word, that's ten for Tough Tamara.
31:13Meal.
31:13And that's six points for Ritika.
31:17And so, with no points to her name, it's Helpful Hannah, who must leave the dojo.
31:25Walk of eternal regret.
31:29I found the brain training quite useful, because at first I didn't think I was going to be able to
31:33do the task, but then I did complete the task, even though I didn't complete the word.
31:37The thing that I've learned from coming on Brain Jitsus is that I can overcome my fears, and I'm really
31:42pleased about that.
31:45With three levels to go, those who use the craniums to conquer the crickets are jewellery rewarded with their blue
31:50belts.
31:52It was really disgusting.
31:54I was just blowing like, and trying to move them out of the way, trying to get the letters.
31:59The tip really helped me, saying welcome them as your friend.
32:03So I just pretended to be one of the crickets myself, and see how it feels for them.
32:12Brain Jitsus.
32:16Brainy, not so brainy.
32:20Who's the clever clogs, and whose brain needs a lot more training?
32:24Queen Elizabeth I, what a lady.
32:26She ruled for a whopping 45 years, a glittering rain known as the Golden Age.
32:31Not only did the Queen use her tactical brain to send the Spanish Armada packing, but she also outwitted her
32:36rivals for the throne.
32:37High five, Lizzie.
32:39Now meet Ying Zheng, first emperor of China, a man obsessed with living forever.
32:44He sent out explorers to find a magic potion that would help him live for hundreds of years.
32:48But after taking the potion, he soon became ill and died.
32:52Always read the label.
32:53Brainy, Queen Elizabeth I.
32:55Not so brainy, Ying Zheng.
32:59Brain Jitsu.
33:01Tension in Brain Jitsu Dojo mounting.
33:04Now, just four young hope remain to compete under watchful eye of Sheehan.
33:10Ritika, solid throughout.
33:11I just pretended to be one of the crickets myself, and see how it feels for them.
33:16Tough Tamara.
33:17Confident Jonathan.
33:19And Tishani, winner of two levels so far.
33:22I think that I've got what it takes to get the black belt.
33:26Only two brainy will make it to final showdown.
33:29Table of supreme focus.
33:31Where must move ball with power of mind.
33:34Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is within their grasp.
33:38Here's time for...
33:43Now, if you're learning how to ride a halfpipe on a BMX bike, then you might be interested to know
33:49that your new hobby is doing wonders for your old grey matter.
33:54Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
34:00You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head, which keeps your brain cells topped up
34:07with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
34:10So, in level five, my brainy's are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
34:16Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
34:20And this is what our brainy's are going to train for now.
34:24Room of Mental Nourishment.
34:28It's our brainy's fourth visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, where they'll be training their brains in how to
34:34learn new skills.
34:36Flip the bean bag from the top of your head to the back of your neck.
34:39What?
34:40I think it means like this.
34:45Well, kind of, but hey, it's a start.
34:49And definitely an improvement on Ritika's effort.
34:52No, that's not it.
34:54Jonathan, too, is struggling to get the thinking and doing parts of his brain to work in harmony.
35:03Well done, son.
35:04But I think some of this lot could do with a training tip.
35:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:10Have confidence.
35:11Compliment each other.
35:12That headband looks really nice.
35:14You've been coming first on every task so far.
35:18Your hair is really nice as well.
35:20Thanks.
35:20It might seem weird being told you're wonderful, but confidence really can help the brain to master new skills.
35:27Shishani, I really think you've got a good chance of winning this, because you're just really cool and you can
35:31do this.
35:32You did well as well.
35:34Can I say a tip?
35:35Yes.
35:35Yes.
35:36If you do it slow and take your time, then it usually just falls, it slowly crawls down your neck
35:42and into it.
35:43Slow and steady wins the race.
35:44Well, she's wrong.
35:46I'd stick to complimenting one another if I were you, Ritika.
35:49I think the person with the best attitude would be Jonathan, because he always gets stuck into the task or
35:54any training we do.
35:56Um, I think, um, that TJ's actually got the best attitude, because he's always, um, getting stuck in with tasks
36:04and he's always thinking of good tips and stuff like that.
36:07So, can slow and steady Ritika move up a gear in time for the next task?
36:12And will Shishani's talent for tossing beanbags help him grab the red belt?
36:18Only time will tell as our four now put their latest brain training to the test.
36:24Quick, quick, don't drip!
36:28Brainy must use training to keep clear head and steady hand to carry water across obstacle course, spilling as little
36:36as possible.
36:37There is trampoline to glide over, seesaw to deal with, and stairs to climb.
36:44Although racing against clock, the more water Brainy's manage to keep in bowls, the more seconds they'll have knocked off
36:51their overall time.
36:52Brainy with slowest time will be eliminated.
36:57The tip for my Brainy's in this next task is to remain calm and think positive thoughts.
37:05Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
37:09As the She-Han fills the bowls, so the Dojo starts to fill with tension.
37:16Which of our four Brainy's will best use their training to master this tricky new skill?
37:23Tijani is first to go.
37:27Ooh, but that's a lot of water gone already.
37:31He might be fast, but he's none too steady.
37:46A little more water lost at the end there, and there's the gong.
37:49So, how's Tijani done?
37:53Brainy's get a point for every unit of water saved, and further bonus points for speed, from three points for
37:59the quickest to none for the slowest.
38:02With 16 units of water left, that's 16 points for Tijani, but we'll have to wait to discover if he's
38:08picked up any bonus points for speed.
38:10Next up is confident Jonathan.
38:21With the thinking part and the doing part of his brain working in perfect harmony, Jonathan's literally racing round the
38:27course.
38:30Safely over the seesaw.
38:35And but for that lost water at the end there, that looks like a terrific round.
38:42That's 18 units of saved water, which means 18 points, plus a possible bonus for speed.
38:49It's now tough Tamara's turn.
39:00Nice and steady so far.
39:05Tamara appears to have remembered her training, and she looks supremely confident.
39:11But again, with the end in sight, the steps strike.
39:20Even so, that's an impressive 20 points for tough Tamara, and a good chance of a bonus.
39:26Last to go is Ritika.
39:28Will she remember her training and stay positive?
39:37Straight off, though, that's a lot of water lost.
39:42What's more, Ritika doesn't look that fast.
39:46Chop, chop, Ritika.
39:56Oh dear, some more water gone on the seesaw.
40:02But there's the finish line.
40:05With 17 points for those 17 units of water, Ritika will be hoping she's been finished.
40:10Fast enough to earn some bonus points.
40:13Let's find out.
40:16Finishing in just 38 seconds, Tijani was our second fastest brainy, bringing him two bonus points.
40:23Added to his 16 points for those 16 units of saved water, that's a final total of 18.
40:29Finishing in 37 seconds, Jonathan was the quickest brainy, earning him the maximum three bonus points, and a grand total
40:37of 21.
40:39Tough Tamara picked up one bonus points for her time, giving her a total of 21 points as well.
40:46While Ritika, as the slowest brainy, picked up no bonus points, and so stays on 17.
40:54All of which means that it's Ritika who's eliminated, and must now leave the dojo.
41:05I was going by the saying of slow and steady wins the race, and that really let me down, so
41:11I don't think I'm going to listen to anyone ever again.
41:14I think that Jonathan's going to win, because he has a lot of confidence, and I think that confidence is
41:20the strongest point you need.
41:23With two levels to go, that leaves just Tijani, Jonathan and Tamara to stand proud in red.
41:30Yeah, I think me and Jonathan are going to go to the final, but I think that it's going to
41:33be really, really tough.
41:35I think we're pretty even at the moment, but my main competition is going to be Tijani, because he's done
41:40really well so far.
41:44Brain T2!
41:48Level 6, ROLL BELT!
41:51It's this level which will decide which two of my remaining brainy's will go on to battle it out for
41:59the black belt.
42:01Now, imagine you're a gymnast.
42:04Not only do you have your routine to remember, but you've got to keep in time to the music, and
42:10you've got a load of people watching you.
42:13It's remembering stuff like this under pressure that Level 6 is all about.
42:17It centres around three areas of the brain.
42:21The seeing part, the occipital lobes.
42:24The memory part, the temporal lobes.
42:26And the movement part, the cerebellum.
42:30To the max!
42:32Room of Mental Nourishment
42:36Our three surviving brainy's are back in the Room of Mental Nourishment.
42:40This time for a dose of memory training.
42:44Brain training.
42:46Memorise the sequence of colours.
42:48Go, go, go.
42:49You memorise that bit. I'll memorise this bit. You memorise that bit.
42:52I think the idea, Jonathan, is to remember the whole sequence. Making life easier kind of defeats the object.
42:59So, who's going to go first?
43:01TJ, you're going first. Come on.
43:03OK. Gray, green, silver, red.
43:06Green, yellow, purple, blue.
43:08Pebble, orange, red.
43:09Oh, I've missed a green one.
43:12That's all fair. She's got three and I've got five and she's got three.
43:16Suffering sushi. I've seen more focus looking through a pair of milk bottles.
43:20Time for a training tip.
43:21Hey, I've got a tip.
43:23Create a song linked to the colours together.
43:26Let's do opera.
43:28Opera?
43:29Gray, green, silver, red.
43:34So it might not be more tart, but if it helps to remember those colours, who cares?
43:39Green, yellow, purple, blue. Green, purple, yellow.
43:42Great, I've got a green, I've got a silver, I've got a red.
43:44Memory training like this isn't just great for the brain, it's also very useful.
43:48Next time you're out shopping, try turning your shopping list into a song and see if you
43:53can remember everything on it.
43:56Our three brainies have another go.
43:58Pull your band over your eyes.
44:00Okay.
44:01Ouch.
44:03I've got a grey, I've got a green, I've got a silver, I've got a red, green, yellow, purple, blue.
44:08I've got a green, purple, orange, red.
44:10And that's the way of the banana line.
44:12That was wicked.
44:13Thanks.
44:14Well done, brainies.
44:15Top banana.
44:18I think Tamara's going to be pretty good, actually, because, well, you're really good at memory
44:22and you managed to get that song perfect first time.
44:25But I don't think I've got much of a chance of winning this now.
44:29Thanks, but I think you're going to be the best.
44:31Or TJ.
44:32You both did really well.
44:34Okay, boy final.
44:36Will Tamara handle the pressure and grab her third win in a row?
44:41Or will the chaps turn it into an all-boy final?
44:46Only time will tell, as our final three put their memory train into the test for one of
44:51two brown brain belts and a place on the table of supreme forks.
44:57Super memory dizzy dash.
45:01A brainie is a spin around on dizzy wheel.
45:04Total of ten time, while using all power of focus to memorize five images in front of them.
45:11Then, must raise against clock to cross balancing beam and collect exact opposite of those image
45:18from ten hanging above them.
45:20If brainie remember seeing sun, then must pick moon.
45:25When happy they have arranged images in correct order, must hit gong to make clock stop.
45:33My tip for the brainies is to keep focused on the main objective
45:37and use their training to link the five images together.
45:42So, as our final three brave the dizzy wheel, will their memory training help them to remember
45:47the images and ignore the effects of being spun round like clams on a carousel?
45:52Time to spin.
45:58Tijani is first to brave the wheel, calling out the names of all the images to help him remember.
46:05Don't forget, our brainies must fight their dizziness and pick out the opposite images of the ones they saw on
46:11the wheel.
46:12So, here are the pictures that Tijani saw and here are the opposites.
46:17For everyone they get wrong, our brainies will pick up a five-second penalty.
46:22Oh dear, after a confident start, Tijani's had a complete mental block.
46:28Come on, Tijani, focus.
46:30Curse.
46:31That peppermill looks to be in the wrong position.
46:34And with that balloon in his line-up, Tijani earned himself a couple of penalties for sure.
46:42Next to head off is confident Jonathan, as he remembered his training and found a way to link those images
46:47together.
46:51But Jonathan's just realised that he's only got four images.
46:58Can he get those temporal lobes working?
47:05But in his rush to find that last image, Jonathan has made a crucial mistake.
47:10Will it cost him deer?
47:21Last to go is Tough Tamara.
47:23Very impressive during training.
47:27Here are those images again.
47:35So far, so good.
47:37And that's five.
47:42But can she get them in the right order?
47:50You bet.
47:52And you've got every right to look pleased.
47:56So, whose memory has come out on top?
48:02Tijani finished in one minute 44 seconds, but picked up two penalties, giving him a total of one minute 54.
48:10Confident Jonathan picked up only one penalty, to give him a time of one minute 21.
48:23And so it's Jonathan and Tamara, who stay in, and Tijani, who goes out.
48:36Walk of Eternal Regret.
48:39Walk of Eternal Regret.
48:40I think I'll try to concentrate harder instead of getting distracted by the spinning.
48:45I'm feeling really bad because I thought, wow, I might be able to get to the brown belts.
48:53So with just one level to go, that leaves confident Jonathan and tough Tamara to don their brown brain belts
48:59and prepare for the final showdown.
49:01I feel really excellent that I've made it this far, but I'm really scared that I might go out on
49:07the final round.
49:08I'm really confident about this round, but, and I'm doing it for the girls.
49:13I'm going to easily beat Tamara.
49:18Brain Jitsu.
49:22Eight young hopeful arrived at Brain Training Dojo to fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:28As training got tougher, so, brainies fell by wayside.
49:32Some lack concentration.
49:34Others let pressure get to them.
49:37One by one, all have been eliminated.
49:40Now just two remain.
49:41Tough Tamara, winner of last three level and on a roll.
49:45I'm really confident about this round, but, and I'm doing it for the girls.
49:50And confident Jonathan, never out of top three.
49:53Yeah, I did all the training and, well, it was really easy.
49:57But who will use Brain Training to max to win this last challenge?
50:03Level seven.
50:04Black Belt.
50:06So, this is it.
50:08Between my two remaining brainies and the black belt stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
50:15A mental duel that is head-to-head in every sense.
50:19The battlefield?
50:21A table.
50:22But not just any table.
50:24For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus.
50:28Where our two brainies will attempt to move a ball across the table using only the power of their mind.
50:35By getting this far, they've already demonstrated mental control under many different types of pressure.
50:42But now, they must learn to focus their minds by entering a state of total calm.
50:47To prepare them, my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
50:53Room of Mental Nourishment.
51:00In this, their final visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, our last two brainies are about to train in
51:06how to stay focused, no matter what's happening around them.
51:10Brain Training.
51:12Mentally prepare yourself for the final task.
51:15Don't let the sound put you off.
51:19So, our two finalists must block out the noises and concentrate only on finding their focus.
51:29Confident Jonathan starts off nice and calm, but then comes down with a fit of giggles.
51:37What's so funny?
51:42Well, that's one way of blocking out the sound.
51:45Perhaps a training tip will help.
51:48Visualise and focus on somewhere.
51:50You feel happy and calm.
51:55Take two.
51:56And once again, tough tomorrow's resorted to radical measures.
52:02But confident Jonathan looks to have taken that tip on board to finally discover his focus.
52:12I really want that black belt because everyone will know I'm the best and I did the best out of
52:17the whole of my school.
52:19Well, tough, because I'm going to win it for the girls and for my school.
52:23Can't stand the heat?
52:25What heat?
52:26Can confident Jonathan keep his focus for the next and final task?
52:31Or will it be tough Tamara who grabs her chance of glory?
52:34Let's find out.
52:35Table of Supreme Focus
52:41Rules are simple.
52:43Each brainy must push ball to the opponent's end of table using only power of mind.
52:49Sensors in brainy's headbands measure brainwaves.
52:52This is converted into electrical signal which moves ball.
52:57More focused mind, stronger signal, and faster ball will travel.
53:02See how brainy's are doing on this readout.
53:05Two lines represent each player's brainwaves.
53:08Lower the line, more concentrated their mind.
53:20To make sure this is the test of all tests, our brainy's must win the best of three rounds.
53:28So, this is the big one.
53:29Our two finalists must use all their brain training to enter their zone of absolute focus.
53:34This is the reason they came to the dojo.
53:38This is the moment they've been training for.
53:47It's Tamara who's first to get the ball moving.
53:50Her lower black line is almost touching the bottom of the screen.
53:54Unable to match her concentration levels, a shocked-looking Jonathan is powerless to stop the ball from reaching his end.
54:02One-nil to Tamara, and Jonathan will have to call on all his training if he's to turn this around.
54:10Round two.
54:15This time it's Jonathan who's off to the better start.
54:18His green line now the lower of the two.
54:25And even though Tamara's doing her best to resist, confident Jonathan keeps the pressure on.
54:33That's one-all.
54:37It's all down to this.
54:39The final round.
54:40Who will call best with the brain strain?
54:46We're off.
54:47And again it's Jonathan who's got the edge.
54:53Little by little he piles on the pressure.
55:00Until finally that ball reaches his opponent's end.
55:05It's all over.
55:07After an epic head-to-head battle, it's confident Jonathan whose training has paid off.
55:12Digging deep to find new depths of focus, he truly has proved himself to be the master of the mind.
55:18And worthy winner of the brain jitsu black belt.
55:22It makes me feel really privileged that I've got all the way through and won the black belt.
55:26And beaten seven people to the final and won it.
55:30Which is really amazing because I didn't think I'd get this far.
55:33But glory for one brings disappointment for another.
55:37And although she fought bravely, tough Tamara must now leave the dojo.
55:43Walk of eternal regret.
55:46I feel a little bit upset because I was going to do it for my school and the girls.
55:51And it's a little bit upset because I've gone this far.
56:02What a brilliant display of mental focus from confident Jonathan.
56:06One nil down on the table of supreme focus, this gritty young brainy simply refused to give up.
56:15Drawing on all his training, he held his nerve to snatch that black brain belt from Tamara's grasp.
56:22Because I lost the first one, after the first one, I just felt terrible because I thought, oh, I'm going
56:27to lose this now.
56:28So I won the next two just with ease.
56:30Brain jitsu has showed me that I have more mental ability than I thought I did.
56:35Our journey has come to an end.
56:37Another brainy has proven themselves worthy to wear the brain jitsu black belt.
56:42But while brain jitsu might represent the most extreme form of brain training, its philosophy can be shared by all.
56:52Each and every one of you has it in your power to grow your mind.
56:56All it takes is dedication and practice.
57:00This has been...
57:03Brain jitsu.
57:06Brain jitsu.
57:06Brain jitsu.
57:10Brain jitsu.
