00:00I'd like to state that no braineese or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:03and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:09Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:11To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain for chance to win Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
00:19This is Brain Jitsu.
00:27Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as Samurai's sword,
00:33he is Brain Master, he is the Sensei.
00:37Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jitsu.
00:42Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:46My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training in the comfort of their own home.
00:53A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep, and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:02I'm really excited and I feel like I've done a lot of preparation, and I really want to fight and
01:07win.
01:08I'm really good at maths and I can answer questions very quickly.
01:12I'm good at sports and that's going to put me ahead of the rest.
01:16Today I feel really confident because I did the training and it was really fun and I did really well.
01:22I really want the black belt. Don't take coming second.
01:25Now my braineese must put their training into practice by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:32Level one.
01:33Level one!
01:35Take a look at this tin of Brain Jitsu beans.
01:38Now, try to find it amongst all the other tins.
01:43Spot it, eh?
01:45Congratulations!
01:46You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:49This area, the same part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:56The seven braineese who use their occipital lobes the best will be allowed to enter my Brain Jitsu Dojo, where
02:02their training will continue.
02:04The one who fails will be left outside.
02:07Oh!
02:08Feel the burn.
02:09Enter the dojo!
02:14Our braineese must answer four questions by studying the different shapes on the board in front of them.
02:19Get the questions right and they'll be left with a four-digit code, which they must then use to unlock
02:24a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:27But with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese, one of either Danielle, Ralph, Edward, Amber, Michael, Georgia, Joshua
02:37or Kofi will be left outside and eliminated.
02:42A bang of the gong reveals the four questions.
02:49How many small pink circles are there?
02:58How many black shapes are there?
03:07How many small circles are there?
03:16How many squares are there?
03:22The answer our brainies are looking for is three, five, seven, three.
03:30Faster than you can say turkey teriyaki, Edward is off his stool with Ralph and Michael not far behind.
03:36But have they got the right code?
03:40Pretty soon there's one brainey to each piece of brain.
03:44All except for Georgia, that is, who's taking her time.
03:51Which turns out to be a smart move, because while the boys have all had to return to the noodle
03:56bar for another look,
03:58Georgia's got a code and is first to unlock a piece of brain, quickly followed by Amber and Michael.
04:05Don't forget the code our brainies are searching for is three, five, seven, three.
04:10Because there are three small pink circles, five black shapes, seven small circles and three squares.
04:20Which means that Kofi still has not got the right code.
04:23Come on Kofi, stay focused and work those occipital lobes.
04:28With two more braineys in possession of a piece, that now just leaves Kofi, Danielle and Ralph to fight it
04:34out for the last two places in the dojo.
04:36At first, Ralph has to wait for an opening, but then he gets his chance, and this time there's no
04:43mistake.
04:44With just one piece of brain left, the pressure now really is on.
04:48But once again, Danielle's digits are out, opening the door for Kofi.
04:53And as his lock springs open, he's in, and Danielle's out.
05:03While seven have proven themselves worthy of entering the dojo and continuing their brain training, for Danielle, it's the end
05:09of the road.
05:11I feel disappointed because I didn't count all the squares.
05:17The window will need concentration and focus.
05:23So, with six levels to go, it's Amber, Georgia, Michael, Edward, Joshua, Ralph and Kofi, who receive their yellow brain
05:32belts.
05:33Oh, that was really hard. I thought I had better eyesight.
05:36I just won. I was like, no, it must be a dream.
05:40And I was like, I won. I was like, so excited. I was like, yay!
05:43Because I almost got out, I need to up my game because I won't get another chance like that.
05:50Brain Titter!
05:52In this next level of training, things are going to get really hard.
05:57Level two.
05:58Orange Vault.
06:01We do things every day without even thinking.
06:04Like eating with a knife and fork.
06:07Now, try swapping them over, whoa, and see how you get on.
06:11I prefer chopsticks, mate.
06:14If you manage to do that, you're using part of your brain that deals with problem solving.
06:19The frontal lobes.
06:21And that's what level two is all about.
06:24Taking something you normally do without thinking and doing it differently.
06:29Work it!
06:30To prepare them for using their frontal lobes in the next challenge, my brainies are going to need some training.
06:36Room of Mental Nourishment.
06:40This is the Room of Mental Nourishment, wherever young hopefuls will train their brains between every task.
06:46The more seriously our brainies take their training, they're better prepared they'll be for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:52And in level two, that challenge is all about getting their brains to think in a new way.
06:57Write the name of the brainy you think will win the black belt.
07:02Write backwards using the hand you don't normally write with.
07:07Okay.
07:08Can you do yourselves?
07:09Yeah.
07:10Yeah.
07:11Probably.
07:11Okay.
07:12There's confidence for you.
07:13George, I can't see anyone winning but herself.
07:16So, our brainies are going to be made to think about something like writing that they'd normally do without thinking.
07:22I'm writing Michael because he's got a good thing.
07:26And Amber's not the only one who thinks Michael's marvellous.
07:29I'm writing Michael because he seems quite confident in the challenges.
07:34Very nice.
07:35Time for a training tip.
07:38Picture the word in front of you before you write it.
07:41Think about each individual letter.
07:45As our brainies have another go, it looks like Michael's got some competition.
07:49I think Edward because he's good at that sort of stuff and he's got skill.
07:53And I've written his name nine times.
08:00Nice try, Joshua, but you only get one vote.
08:04If you want to work your frontal lobes and improve your all-round focus, writing backwards with your wrong hand
08:09is a great thing to do.
08:11Put your hand up if you voted for Michael.
08:21You couldn't get the letters to actually do what you wanted it to do.
08:26But loads of people voted for me so it's a bit nerve-wracking and if I lose I might let
08:31them down.
08:32How will marvellous Michael cope with the pressure of being favourite to win?
08:37Will one of our other brainies use their training to become top dog?
08:42Time to find out as our seven now put their frontal lobe training to the test.
08:48Guardian of the dojo and task adjudicator the she-han will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
08:54Confusing colour challenge.
08:58Brainies will take turn to stand in middle of confusing colour challenge map.
09:03She-han then flip through 15 cards.
09:06On each card is name of colour.
09:08Ignoring actual word and focusing only on colour that word is written in.
09:13Brainies must then jump with both feet onto marching circle.
09:17So, if see this, must jump on blue.
09:21Brainies will need to be on board because she-han will be turning over cards at fair old lick.
09:27Player with least number of correct colour matches will be eliminated.
09:34My brainie tip for this task is to focus the mind on just one letter and not the whole word.
09:40What's important here is not the word but the colour that it's written in.
09:47First on the mat is Amber.
09:49Can she remember her training and get her brain to think differently?
09:56So that's green.
09:58That's red.
09:59And that's Amber.
10:01Who's in all sorts of trouble.
10:03With the she-han turning those cards faster than a bullet train,
10:06her frontal lobes are really struggling to keep up.
10:09And although her training eventually kicks in,
10:12has it been too little too late?
10:18Next up is Georgia.
10:24And unlike Amber, her brain looks to be switched on from the very start.
10:29Blue.
10:30Yellow.
10:32Blue.
10:33It's a great short focus from the young brainie who's yet to put a foot wrong.
10:38There's the gong and jumping Georgia has got every right to look pleased.
10:44Despite the odd mistake,
10:45most of her brainies appear to have remembered their training,
10:48furiously working those frontal lobes.
10:57Next up is Joshua.
11:08But after a good start, his brain starts to play tricks.
11:13Come on, Joshua.
11:14Keep that focus.
11:23No problems, though, for Ralph.
11:27Or for Kofi.
11:29Both of whom have risen to the challenge of getting their brains to think in a new way.
11:34The gong sounds for the last time.
11:36I have our seven brainies done.
11:39Jumping Georgia scored a brain-tastic 15 out of 15 colour matches,
11:44with Ralph and Kofi just behind her on 14.
11:49Next came Edward and marvellous Michael on 13 matches each.
11:55Leaving just one of either Amber or Joshua to advance to the next level.
12:00But with Amber scoring just seven to Joshua's 12,
12:04it's our level one winner Amber who is first to enter the dojo and first to leave.
12:14Walk of eternal regret.
12:17It was really confusing because she was doing it quick and I couldn't read it
12:23and I couldn't see on the floor why she was doing it.
12:25I feel really disappointed that I didn't get through, but it was fun while it lasted.
12:33So with five levels to go, it's Georgia, Michael, Edward, Joshua, Ralph and Kofi
12:39who received their orange brain belts.
12:42I had a strategy and I found that helped me out quite a lot
12:45by focusing my eyes in the middle of the letters to look at the colour
12:49and jump from spot to spot.
12:51I only just got in, but I'm feeling confident and very happy
12:55and hopefully I'm going to go on and win the black belt.
13:09Who's the clever clogs and whose brain needs a lot more training?
13:13Picture the scene.
13:14It's 1666 and this young chap, Isaac Newton,
13:18is catching 40 winks in his orchard
13:20when Wallop, an apple, hits him right on the nut.
13:23But Isaac doesn't just yelp and rub the large bump on his curly head.
13:27He only goes and discovers the force that keeps our feet on the ground
13:30and the earth in orbit around the sun, namely gravity.
13:34Apple-tastic.
13:36Back in ancient Greece, another young lad called Icarus
13:39is banged up in prison after doing something naughty.
13:41So he decides to escape by making a pair of giant wings from feathers and wax
13:45and then flying out the window.
13:47But in his excitement, this bird brain goes and flies too near the sun,
13:51thus melting the wings and dropping like a stone into the drink.
13:54Oh dear, oh dear.
13:56Brainy, Isaac Newton.
13:57Not so brainy, Icarus Thickerus.
14:02Brain Jitsu.
14:05A petition in Brain Jitsu Dojo hotting up.
14:08Only six trainees now remain to battle out under watchful eye of Sheehan.
14:13Jumping Georgia, winner of last level.
14:17Ralph.
14:17I really want the black belt.
14:20Marvellous Michael.
14:22Edouard.
14:22Yeah, I feel really confident because I did the training.
14:26Kofi, getting stronger with each level.
14:29And Joshua.
14:30Hopefully I'm going to go one and win the black belt.
14:34Challenge about to get even tougher.
14:36Only two brainy will make final test.
14:39Table of Supreme Hawkers.
14:41Square must move forward with power of mind
14:44for chance to win Brain Jitsu black brain belt.
14:47It's time for...
14:51Level 3.
14:52Wisdom.
14:54Now, we all like to chat.
14:56But did you know that using words to communicate
14:59is one of the main reasons why our brains have grown so incredibly powerful
15:04and that having a conversation exercises both halves of the brain?
15:09Allow me to explain.
15:11Think of it like a policeman guiding traffic.
15:15While the drivers are focused on their own individual journeys,
15:18the policeman, he has to control all the cars and where they're going.
15:22It's the same with the brain.
15:24There's the left half, which deals with the details,
15:27and there's the right half, which looks at the overall picture.
15:31This next level of training strengthens my brainy's focus
15:34by working one half of their brain under pressure.
15:38They pump it off.
15:41Room of Mental Nourishment.
15:44It's our brainy's second visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment,
15:48where once again they'll train in preparation for their next challenge,
15:51which, remember, is all about using the two asses of the brain to communicate.
15:57Get into pairs.
15:59Direct the blindfolded brainy to stack the blocks using only one hand.
16:03Sounds interesting.
16:04OK. Let's test you.
16:07How many fingers am I holding up?
16:09One, two, three, four.
16:12That's right, Ralph. You keep them honest.
16:14Six.
16:15On your marks. Get set, go.
16:18Get a thick one and stick it up.
16:22Her brainy's get cracking,
16:23with marvellous Michael using the right side of his brain
16:26to give Edward good, clear instructions.
16:29Forward here.
16:30You're doing well.
16:31Left, right, left.
16:31And by encouraging his partner,
16:33Michael's showing more good communication skills.
16:37Now stop.
16:39Ralph, though, has decided that he and Kofi are in a race.
16:43His words tumbling out faster than commuters from a Tokyo subway.
16:47Now, it's going to be another small square one, so...
16:50Meanwhile, Joshua and Georgia are struggling to get their tower off the ground.
16:54Time for a training tip.
16:56Yeah, he did well.
16:57Let's do it, man.
16:58Use short, clear instructions.
17:00Imagine yourself hearing them.
17:03In other words, what our guiders need to do
17:06is imagine what information their partners need,
17:09because good communication means putting yourself in someone else's shoes.
17:13Now, get us from the square.
17:15Wait, wait, wait. Stop, stop.
17:16This time, it's Ralph who's being supportive.
17:19As far as you can.
17:20Far away, yeah.
17:21Move forward.
17:22And it's not just them who are doing well,
17:24because Joshua and Georgia seem to have really benefited from their training tip.
17:29To your right, to your right.
17:30Yes.
17:31Now we are one.
17:32That's fine.
17:33Forward a bit.
17:33Should we stop now?
17:35Yeah, OK.
17:36That's it, folks.
17:37You quit one of your head.
17:38Leave it, leave it.
17:39I think we've really improved because of the tip.
17:41Before, Josh was, like, forgetting that I was blindfolded,
17:45and he was like, yeah, put it in the middle.
17:46But that time, he was like, right, right, left, left, up, down.
17:50So it was really good.
17:51I'm not very good at instructing.
17:53No way.
17:54So can Jumping Georgia take her training into the next task?
17:59And will Rapid Ralph once again take the speedy route?
18:03It's time to find out as our six now put their communication train in to the test.
18:11Punch through number two.
18:14This is test of communication skill.
18:17So six brainy must first divide into teams of two by drawing chopsticks.
18:26Quickly as possible, teams must punch six bucket containing number that go to make some.
18:32Pairs must decide who is guider, who is puncher.
18:36Puncher is blindfold and relying on guider to help find bucket.
18:41When all six bucket punched, brainy stop clock by shouting,
18:46Brain Jitsu!
18:47Quicker they punch bucket, more time they have to pick up number and make some.
18:53When brainy happy with answer, hit gong!
18:56First two team to work out correct answer, get green belt and advance to next level.
19:02One brainy from losing team will be eliminated.
19:07The key to success here is for the guider to use the right side of their brain
19:11to follow their teammates' progress and give them clear instructions.
19:16For their partner, it's vital they use the left side of their brain
19:21to focus on these instructions and nothing else.
19:26One step forward.
19:28First to put their communication training to the test are Georgia and Edward.
19:32Punch.
19:34One step forward.
19:35With jumping Georgia calling the shots and Edward wearing the glove,
19:38the two quickly find their groove, working one half of their brain each to great effect.
19:43And a high punch.
19:45Yes, well done.
19:47Forward.
19:48But then their communication begins to unravel, losing them valuable time.
19:52Forward.
19:53Erm.
19:56To your left.
19:59And punch.
20:01Brain Jitsu.
20:04Finally, Georgia stops the clock at one minute fifty seconds.
20:07Whether it's bought them any extra time to make their sum, they'll have to wait and see.
20:16Next up are Joshua and Kofi.
20:20Punch.
20:22With the taller of the two, Kofi, doing the punching, the pair get off to a flying start.
20:27Punch.
20:29And never look back.
20:31Punch.
20:33Punch.
20:34Punch.
20:36Brain Jitsu.
20:37Stopping the clock in one minute seven seconds, it's a knock-out performance from the boys.
20:44Last to punch are Ralph and Michael.
20:47Back, see, back.
20:49Yeah, back.
20:50Right.
20:50And as in training, Ralph sets off like a rocket.
20:52Right.
20:53Back.
20:55Punch.
20:56Right.
20:57But while his commands are quick, they don't contain much detail.
21:01Forward.
21:02Left.
21:04Meaning that some of Michael's punches are missing the target.
21:07Punch.
21:09Keep on going.
21:11OK, quite quickly, forward.
21:13Left.
21:15Left.
21:16Punch.
21:17Brain Jitsu.
21:19Still, one minute 26 seconds is a pretty decent effort.
21:28But it's Joshua and Kofi as the fastest team, who set off first to find their numbers.
21:34Sorry, there's one more, one more, one more.
21:37Here's what our braineas are looking for.
21:39See if you can work out the sum.
21:40Remember, the first two teams to work it out will go through to the next level.
21:44I've got two times...
21:47Wait, I got it.
21:48I think, I think...
21:49Despite setting off last in search of their numbers, Georgia and Edward are first to bang
21:54their gong, just ahead of Joshua and Kofi, with Ralph and Michael coming in third.
21:59But do the numbers add up?
22:03Two times 11 plus five equals 27.
22:06That looks good.
22:07In fact, all three teams have found the right answer.
22:10Yes.
22:12Yes.
22:16But, as the last to finish, it's Rapid Ralph and Marvellous Michael who'll be battling
22:21it out to avoid elimination in the...
22:23Stare off.
22:27With just one green belt up for grabs, both brainies must use all their powers of focus
22:32to fight the urge to blink.
22:34The first to falter will be eliminated.
22:44Oh, and it's Ralph who can resist no longer.
22:48While Marvellous Michael lives to fight another day, for Rapid Ralph it's time to hand over
22:53his orange brain belt and leave the dojo.
23:02The quake of eternal regret.
23:06I came to the Stare off and I just had to clear my throat and then I blinked.
23:12I'm feeling sad, but oh well, these things happened.
23:16So, with four levels to go, it's Georgia, Michael, Edward, Joshua and Kofi who line up
23:23for their green belts.
23:24Sadly, I knocked him out, but just...
23:27It was a good tie-break.
23:29I definitely feel confident because in the first round I came second, in the second round
23:35I came first, and in this round I've come first as well.
23:49This fourth level requires our brainies to master a primitive part of the brain called
23:54the amygdala, the area that responds to threat.
23:58Oh, oh, oh, oh.
24:02Remember the last time you felt afraid or panicky?
24:05Perhaps you're on a ghost train at a fairground.
24:07Well, that feeling was triggered by the old amygdala.
24:12Stress can make you lose focus.
24:15Fact.
24:15Which is why my brainies must train to keep their emotions under control.
24:22Room of mental nourishment.
24:25It's time for our five remaining green belt holders to overcome their fear and stay focused.
24:32Form a circle.
24:34Pass the disgusting drink around the circle, only passing it on when you have said a different
24:40word relating to the last word someone says.
24:43After one minute, the brainie holding the drink has to drink it.
24:48Must be that.
24:50Uh, cod liver oil.
24:55That's right, brainies, a quite revolting glass of cod liver oil.
25:00Quick, the minute's started.
25:01Go.
25:02Rock.
25:03Stone.
25:05Pebble.
25:06Doing the best to ignore the signals coming from their amygdalas, our brainies get cracking.
25:12Seasides.
25:13Water.
25:14And it's a good start.
25:16Our brainies show a little sign of worry as they hand round their drink of stink.
25:21Good now.
25:25Oh, but then Joshua has a mental block.
25:28Just the thought of that cod liver oil making him hesitate.
25:32Flowing water.
25:34Waterfall.
25:35And Niagara Falls.
25:36Wet.
25:41There's the gong, and it's Edward who's the unfortunate one left holding the cup of yuck.
25:49But Edward takes his medicine like a man and bravely gulps down the glute.
25:53Well done, Edward.
25:55Well done, Edward.
25:55That was disgusting.
25:56Well done, Edward.
25:56Hey, time for a training tip.
25:59Concentrate.
26:00Try to blank out the time and the fear of the drink to avoid panicking.
26:05So basically that's saying, like, just, like, forget the drink.
26:09Pretend.
26:10And if you think about it, then you're going to get something really nice, like £2 million
26:14or something.
26:15That's right, brainies.
26:17Focusing only on the task in hand is a good idea in almost any situation where you feel
26:22nervous.
26:23The calmer you are, the better you'll perform.
26:26Gulping.
26:30And again, it's hesitant Joshua, who seems most affected by the drink.
26:35Smoking.
26:36All right.
26:38Cigar.
26:41Oh, but again, it's poor old Edward who has to actually down it.
26:45Think how nice the chocolate melting in your mouth.
26:55That was absolutely disgusting, especially because I did it twice.
27:03I think the tip helped because instead of people just being scared of actually tasting
27:09it, it was about people overcoming their fears.
27:12I think I hesitated the most because of the fear about tasting the drink.
27:16You just don't want to do it, so it stops you from thinking.
27:22Will Joshua be able to keep his anxiety under control?
27:25Will Kofi remember his training?
27:28And will brave Edward be able to block out the memory of that cod liver oil?
27:32It's time to find out as our five are challenged to overcome their fears once again.
27:39Creepy crawly word grab.
27:42This level, real test of mind over matter for brainies.
27:45And will push them to really overcome their fear.
27:48Underneath the creepy crawlies lie an assortment of letters worth different points.
27:53Brainies have just one minute to plunge hands into tank and pick out up to seven letters each.
27:59They then have a further minute to make higher scoring words they can.
28:05To do well, my brainies must block out the signals coming from their amygdala and ignore the creepy crawlies.
28:12The quicker they combat their fear, the more time they'll have to pick out the high scoring letters.
28:20So, have our brainies remembered their training?
28:28Oh, God, no way.
28:30Judging by some of their reactions, you have to wonder.
28:34Underneath the pile of crickets are an extra five golden letters.
28:38If our brainies manage to use one in their word, they'll double their score.
28:49While Kofi appears to be coolly going about his business, ignoring the signals coming from his amygdala,
28:55Jumping Georgia is showing signs of nerves, using a tile to pick out her letters.
29:00Meanwhile, Brave Edward has found one of the golden letters.
29:04If he can now just make a word, he'll double his score.
29:08The minute is up.
29:10Our brainies now have a further minute to make the higher scoring word they can from their letters.
29:15That is so not fair.
29:20Tin might be a word, but only if you have an N, Edward.
29:23An upside-down U just won't cut the wasabi.
29:32See if you can make a word from the anagram on the screen now.
29:45There's the second gong.
29:47How have our brainies done?
29:52A.
29:53With nothing but vowels to choose from, Georgia looks to have paid the price for a picky approach, scoring just
29:59one point.
30:01No word.
30:02Holy karaoke.
30:04Somehow, Michael has managed not to score anything at all.
30:07A sign of a late panic, perhaps.
30:11Tip.
30:12With that golden T, that's eight points for Brave Edward.
30:17High.
30:19A quick check of the dictionary, and that's four points for Joshua.
30:26Not.
30:27And four points for Kool Kofi.
30:32All of which means that it's marvellous Michael who must leave the dojo.
30:39Walk of eternal regret.
30:43I found the brain training very useful, and I got over my fear, but I didn't quite get the big
30:51word because the time ran out.
30:53It was very annoying, actually, but it's okay, it's not that bad.
31:01So, with three levels to go, those who use their craniums to conquer the crickets are duly rewarded with their
31:07blue belts.
31:09The training really helped, because if it weren't for the tip, I wouldn't have, like, done anything, really.
31:17It wasn't very nice, and I don't think I want to do it again, really.
31:22Now Michael's out the, um, competition, I think I have a better chance of winning now.
31:36Brainy, not so brainy.
31:39Who's the clever clogs, and whose brain needs a lot more training?
31:43Queen Elizabeth I, what a lady.
31:46She ruled for a whopping 45 years, a glittering rain known as the Golden Age.
31:51Not only did the queen use her tactical brain to send the Spanish Armada packing,
31:55but she also outwitted her rivals for the throne.
31:57High five, Lizzie.
31:59Now meet Ying Zheng, first emperor of China, a man obsessed with living forever.
32:04He sent out explorers to find a magic potion that would help him live for hundreds of years.
32:08But after taking the potion, he soon became ill and died.
32:12Always read the label.
32:13Brainy, Queen Elizabeth I, not so brainy, Ying Zheng.
32:19Brain Jitsu.
32:21Tension in Brain Jitsu Dojo Mountain.
32:24As just four young hopeful remain to compete under watchful eye of Shi Ha.
32:29Jumping Georgia, winner of two levels so far.
32:32I really want to fight and win.
32:34Joshua, steady throughout.
32:37Brave Edward, who conquered cricket.
32:39I think I have a better chance of winning now.
32:42And cool coffee coming up on the rails.
32:46Only two brainy will make final showdown.
32:49Table of supreme focus.
32:51Where must move ball with power of mind.
32:54Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt is within grasp.
32:57It's time for...
33:03If you're learning how to Morris dance, then you might be interested to know that your new hobby is doing
33:09wonders for your old grey matter.
33:12Exercising both the thinking part of the brain, the cerebrum, and the doing part, the cerebellum.
33:19You see, doing new things increases the flow of blood into your head, which keeps your brain cells topped up
33:26with the oxygen they need to perform at their best.
33:29So, in level five, my brainy's are going to be challenged to learn new skills.
33:34Now, you can speed up how quickly the brain takes in new stuff.
33:39And this is what our brainy's are going to train for now.
33:43Room of Mental Nourishment.
33:47It's our brainy's fourth visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, where they'll be training their brains in how to
33:52learn new skills.
33:55Flip and catch as many drinks coasters as you can.
33:59You're allowed to use two hands, do you reckon?
34:02Not really, Georgia, but it'll do to start.
34:06Try one.
34:09Yes.
34:11Two.
34:14It's hard.
34:17Look, watch.
34:19That's one, eh?
34:22See, you can't even do it.
34:23And Kofi is also struggling to get both the thinking part and the doing part of his brain to work
34:28in harmony.
34:29Kofi, eat it off.
34:30Kofi!
34:31Oh, time for a training tip.
34:34Have confidence.
34:35Compliment each other.
34:38I'm sure you'll be very good at it.
34:40Sure.
34:41Josh, I think you're doing really well.
34:44Being confident really can help if you're learning something new.
34:48If you stay positive, you're much more likely to succeed.
34:51Edward, I think you're doing really well in this.
34:54Well done, Josh.
34:55I think you've really been concentrating on all of the tasks and you've done really well.
34:59And before you know it, General Flap has turned into Major Flip.
35:03One.
35:05Oh, yes.
35:07Come on.
35:07I'll try this.
35:10The only exception appears to be Kofi, but he's not letting it get him down.
35:14I think the tip would really help you because if it kind of goes through all of the tasks that
35:22we've done, we need to be confident in ourselves in all the tasks, so it's a really good tip.
35:27I think if I have, like, confidence in my mind, it helps me because I just feel confident instead of,
35:36like, negative.
35:37So, can cool Kofi remain confident despite his failure to flip?
35:43And will Jump in Georgia remember her training when the heat is on?
35:47Only time will tell as our four now put their latest brain training to the test.
35:57To win red belt, brainy must use confidence training to help learn new skills.
36:03Racing against clock, they must steer car around obstacle course.
36:08But this brain jizz too, so controls in reverse.
36:12To go right, must steer left.
36:14And to go forward, must steer backward.
36:16With time penalty lurking along course, brainy's will need to remember training, stay positive, and get hang of tricky controls
36:25as quickly as possible.
36:27The tip for my brainy's in this next task is to remain calm and think positive thoughts.
36:35Giving in to frustration will only lessen their focus and slow them up.
36:40First to take on this new task is Georgia, whose car quickly vanishes out of sight.
36:51Back on track, Georgia begins to inch her way around the course.
36:57Safely past the blocks.
37:01Georgia then goes back and knocks them over, earning her a ten-second penalty.
37:10Boy, this is hard.
37:12Indeed it is, Georgia.
37:14The secret, though, is to remember your training and stay confident.
37:19Over the seesaw.
37:23Under the arch.
37:25Now for the goal.
37:27If Obra and E's knock the ball into the net, they'll get ten seconds knocked off their time.
37:35But having taken at least double that to line up her car, Jumping Georgia finally decides that enough is enough.
37:49Next to get behind the wheel is brave Edward.
37:55It's a steady start, a sign that both the thinking part and the doing part of Edward's brain are working
38:01well together.
38:04No problems getting past the blocks.
38:11Slickly through the slalom.
38:15Now for the goal.
38:20Get in.
38:21Tough work, Edward.
38:23You were well luck-pleased.
38:29Now it's Joshua's turn.
38:33While good with the speedy bit, Joshua's not having quite so much success with the steery part.
38:40But then his training and his confidence slowly start to kick in.
38:47Well, that's five seconds to add for the blocks.
38:56Under the arch.
38:57And now just the goal.
39:02Oh, but he hits the post.
39:04Never mind, though.
39:05It's still a decent effort.
39:10Last up is Kool Kofi.
39:13While not brilliant during training, he remained confident throughout.
39:16Can he do the same now, faced with his new skill?
39:23Despite penalties for knocking over the blocks, the rest of the course poses little problem.
39:30Nicely under the arch, and with the goal at his mercy, he shoots.
39:35And scores!
39:41So, which of her brainies have steered their way to the next level?
39:46With two penalties to add to her time of 7 minutes 14, Georgia finished in a not-so-speedy 7
39:52minutes 24 seconds.
39:55With 10 seconds to knock off his time for this goal, Brave Edward finished in 1 minute 48 seconds.
40:02With one 5-second penalty to his name, Joshua got round in 2 minutes 51 seconds.
40:09While Kool Kofi, with that goal bonus, careered round in a quick-fire 1 minute 35.
40:16Which means it's the end of the speedy, tricky, steery road for Jumping Georgia, who must now leave the dojo.
40:30What I found difficult was the fact that it was in reverse, and I did think at the end, I
40:37should have turned the remote control upside down.
40:40I'm feeling sort of disappointed, but also I'm quite proud of myself for getting this far.
40:49With two levels to go, that leaves just Brave Edward, Joshua, and Kool Kofi to stand proud in red.
40:56I'm really ready to fight for this black belt, because I've got this far doesn't mean I can't get further.
41:02It's getting tougher, and I'm looking forward to the next challenge.
41:09Rain Titu!
41:12A level sixer.
41:14Roll boat!
41:15It's this level which will decide which two of my remaining braineys will go on to battle it out for
41:23the black belt.
41:25Imagine you're about to kick a conversion in an important rugby match.
41:29As well as remembering your technique, there might be a strong wind blowing.
41:33Plus, there's a big crowd watching you.
41:36It's remembering stuff like this under pressure that level six is all about.
41:41It centres around three areas of the brain.
41:44The seeing part, the occipital lobes, the memory part, the temporal lobes, and the movement part, the cerebellum.
41:53To the max.
41:56Room of mental nourishment.
42:01Our three surviving braineys are back in the room of mental nourishment.
42:05This time for a dose of memory training.
42:08Memorise the sequence of colours.
42:11That's going to be hard.
42:13There's ten of them.
42:14Wow.
42:16Best get cracking then.
42:17Orange, green, purple, yellow, pink, red, blue, pink, silver, green.
42:24Cover your eyes and turn around.
42:26I think it was orange, green, purple, green, yellow, pink.
42:35I can't remember the rest.
42:37Orange, green, pink, yellow.
42:44Something blue.
42:47How about you, I'm trying.
42:49Orange, green, purple, yellow, pink, red.
42:57I can't remember.
43:00Nice try, Kofi.
43:01Let's see if a training tip can help you make it ten out of ten.
43:05Create a song linking the colours together.
43:08OK, why don't we make it like an easier order?
43:10So, green, green, pink, pink, and then go like darker to lighter.
43:15Yeah.
43:17A smart idea, Edward, but one that kind of defeats the object of training.
43:21Because the harder it is, the more you'll get out of it.
43:25How about green, green, pink, pink, yellow, silver, orange, red, blue, and purple?
43:31How about green, green, pink, pink, yellow, silver, orange, red, blue, and purple?
43:39Well, that's not really a song, is it?
43:41So it's just saying colours.
43:43But it will help you remember it.
43:44But it wouldn't help me.
43:46Memory training like this isn't just great for the brain, it's also very useful.
43:51Try turning the birthdays in your family into a song and see if it helps you remember them.
43:55Let's see if our brain is training has made a difference.
44:00OK, green, green, pink, pink, yellow, and silver.
44:04Orange, red, blue, and purple.
44:07Green, green, pink, pink, yellow, silver.
44:10Silver, orange, red, blue, and purple.
44:14Yes.
44:15That was good.
44:17We all got it right.
44:18Yep.
44:19I guess that tip helped then.
44:21Yep.
44:22Well, I know it's a bit negative, but I'm not good at remembering.
44:25It's only if it's in a simple order, like that.
44:29I'm a bit nervous about the next task because I'm not very good at remembering things.
44:35It's not my strongest point.
44:37Will Josh's nerves get the better of him?
44:40Will Ed would regret making his training session easier?
44:44Only time will tell as our final three put their memory training to the test
44:48for one of two brown brain belts and a place on the table of supreme focus.
44:54Super Memory Dizzy Dash.
44:57Brainy is spin around on Dizzy Wheel total of ten times
45:02while using all power of focus to memorise five images in front of them.
45:07Then, must race against clock to cross balancing beam
45:12and collect five images they have not seen from the ten hanging above them.
45:18Then, must arrange in alphabetical order.
45:22When Brainy happy with selection, hit the gong to stop clock.
45:29My tip for the Brainy's is to keep focused on the main objective
45:33and use their training to link the five images together.
45:38So, our final three brave the Dizzy Wheel
45:41to compete for their brown brain belt
45:43and the chance of a place on the table of supreme focus.
45:46It's time to spin.
45:53Will their memory training help them to remember the images
45:56and ignore the effects of being spun round like slugs in a cement mixer?
46:03The first to set off is Brave Edward.
46:07Here are the images he saw on the wheel.
46:10Which means that it's this that he's now looking for.
46:14Remember, our Brainy's must fight their dizziness
46:16and pick out the five images they didn't see on the wheel,
46:20arranging them in alphabetical order.
46:22For every one they get wrong, it's a five-second penalty.
46:25The Brainy with the slowest time will be eliminated from the dojo.
46:30Here are those images again.
46:32And that looks like five out of five.
46:34What's more, they're in the right order.
46:39Next to put his training to the test is Joshua.
46:53Oh dear.
46:54Josh might have his five images,
46:56but he appears to have forgotten that he's up against their clock.
46:59Chop, chop, Josh.
47:15No, don't scratch your nose.
47:17Dung the gong!
47:21Five out of five.
47:24Last up is cool coffee.
47:28Oops, steady.
47:31Remember, here's what he's looking for.
47:36Holy karaoke!
47:38Kofi's only gone and picked out an axe.
47:40Well, that's five seconds to add on.
47:48The rest looks okay.
47:50But will that lapse in focus across Kofi, do you?
47:54Let's find out.
47:58With no penalties, Brave Edward finished in a quick-fire one minute, three seconds.
48:04Joshua also didn't pick up any penalties.
48:07However, his time wasn't quite so quick, finishing in one minute, 53.
48:13While cool Kofi, even with that one penalty, banged his gong in one minute, 43.
48:21Which means that it's Joshua who must hand over his brain belt and leave the dojo.
48:27The walk of eternal regret.
48:31The brain training we did before helped me because the tips that, like, use a song to help you remember.
48:40And that helped me.
48:41I'm feeling a bit upset, but I'm proud because I came third.
48:49So, with just one level to go, that leaves brave Edward and cool Kofi to don their brown brain belts
48:55and prepare for the final showdown.
48:58I won by quite a long margin, really.
49:01I won by 30 seconds against Kofi and 50 seconds from Josh.
49:06I'm just glad I got through, really.
49:07I definitely think I've got everything that it takes to win the black belt.
49:18Brain Jitsu
49:22Eight young hopeful arrive at Brain Training Dojo to fight for Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
49:29As training got tougher, so brainies fell by wayside.
49:33Some lack focus.
49:35Others speed.
49:37Now just two remain.
49:39Brave Edward, winner of two levels so far.
49:42And cool Kofi, getting mentally stronger all time.
49:46But who will use Brain Training to the max to win final challenge?
49:52Level seven.
49:53Black Belt.
49:55So, this is it.
49:57Between my two remaining brainies and the black belt stands Brain Jitsu's ultimate challenge.
50:03A mental duel that is head to head in every sense.
50:08The battlefield?
50:10The battlefield?
50:10A table.
50:11A table.
50:11But not just any table.
50:12For this, my friends, is the table of supreme focus.
50:16Where our two brainies will attempt to move a ball across the table using only the power of their mind.
50:24By getting this far, they've already demonstrated mental control under many different types of pressure.
50:30But now, they must learn to focus their minds by entering a state of total calm.
50:36To prepare them, my two finalists will need to get into the zone.
50:41Room of Mental Nourishment.
50:46In this, their sixth and final visit to the Room of Mental Nourishment, our last two brainies are about to
50:51train in how to stay focused, no matter what's happening around them.
50:56Mentally prepare yourself for the final task.
51:00Don't let the sounds put you off.
51:06Both Edward and Kofi immediately get into the zone, Edward shutting his eyes in an effort to really keep his
51:13focus.
51:14Good work, brainies.
51:17I'm not sure these two need a training tip, but here's one anyway.
51:21Focus on one object in the room.
51:25I'll try that.
51:29While cool Kofi stares off into the distance, brave Edward once again has got his eyes shut.
51:34It might not be what's on the tip, but it seems to be working.
51:41I think I'm going to win because I know I can be very focused at times and this is one
51:46of those times.
51:48But I think I'm going to win because I can concentrate way better than you.
51:52I feel a bit in the zone now.
51:55Yeah.
51:56It's been a good final training session for both brainies, but will they be just as calm when their pressure
52:02is on to win that black belt?
52:05Table of Supreme Focus.
52:10Rules are simple.
52:12Each brainy must push ball to the opponent's end of table using only power of mind.
52:18Sensors in brainy's headbands measure brainwaves.
52:21This is converted into electrical signal which moves ball.
52:25More focused mind, stronger signal, and faster ball will travel.
52:30See how brainies are doing on this readout.
52:34Two lines represent each player's brainwaves.
52:37Lower the line, more concentrated their mind.
52:44To make sure this is the test of all tests, our brainies must win the best of three rounds.
52:52So, this is the big one, our two finalists must use all their brain training to enter their zone of
52:58absolute focus.
53:00This is the reason they came to the dojo.
53:04This is the moment they've been training for.
53:17Edward's off to a good start.
53:19Edward's off to a good start.
53:19His green brainwave is straight and low and shows that his mind is fully focused.
53:24But Kofi's fighting back, his face a picture of concentration.
53:31Once again though, Edward gains the upper hand.
53:38And despite Kofi's best efforts, makes it 1-0.
53:42Cool Kofi will have to really dig deep to call on all his training if he's to turn this around.
54:02Again it's Edward who's quickest out of the blocks.
54:06But just as before, Kofi refinds his focus.
54:10You can see from the two brainwaves on the monitor just how closely matched this pair are.
54:19Eventually it's Brave Edward who gets the ball moving again, this time pushing it all the way to the end.
54:27Oh, it's all over.
54:30And it's Brave Edward who's come out on top, using all his training to become a true master of the
54:36mind
54:36and worthy winner of the black belt of brain jitsu.
54:40I just feel amazing really.
54:44It's just a good feeling.
54:48But glory for one brings disappointment for another.
54:52And although he put up a brave fight, Kofi must now leave the dojo.
54:59The walk of eternal regret.
55:03What I think it went wrong for me was when I started winning.
55:08Because as I started winning, I was celebrating in my mind.
55:14Which helped Edward get the lead.
55:16I'm quite annoyed not to get the black belt.
55:19I really surprised myself though because I almost got out on the first round.
55:24And to get to the final was just amazing.
55:31What a triumph for Brave Edward.
55:34Calling on all his training, not once did he let his concentration slip.
55:38And while his opponent wavered, Edward remained focused enough to grab the brain jitsu black belt
55:44right from under his rival's nose.
55:54I didn't actually know I could control my mind like that much.
56:02The lesson I learned from this is that I should have more confidence in myself.
