00:24I've always hustled for money.
00:26I hustled because I had to.
00:27That's the only way I could survive.
00:30As 23 years old, I went into my own business.
00:32All I wanted to do was be the boss.
00:35Being in the field, helping the boys, slugging it out with them.
00:40I just am fiercely competitive, and I don't know why.
00:43I don't know where that comes from in my life, but I have to win.
00:47Sometimes I will make bad decisions doing that,
00:50because I don't think with the business head.
00:53I think with the heart of being the biggest and baddest logger on the coast.
01:00You can't outwork me.
01:03These eight weeks are crucial.
01:05We're going to find out if we can work harder and smarter to make a miracle happen here.
01:17There we go, boys.
01:19There she goes.
01:21Previously, on The Last Woodsman.
01:28Winner!
01:29Jared Douglas makes a bid for the logging rights of a lifetime.
01:33Forever Clean is the right to harvest that timber, as long as your business stays in business.
01:40This is the holy grail.
01:44But when he's beaten out by a fierce competitor...
01:48John Muhammad, you've got to be kidding me.
01:52...he's forced to make a risky deal to log it.
01:54$100,000 per barge.
01:57If you have to fall on any payment of the royalties, no questions asked, I repossessed the float cam.
02:02With a shot to buy it outright...
02:05...at the end of the logging season.
02:18I've got to get $2 million.
02:21I need to make this happen.
02:25But with summer fire shutdown closing in...
02:29...the crew fights to stay on track...
02:33...and keep their hopes alive.
02:36I think we got her.
02:38We got her out.
02:39That's all that matters.
02:43Now...
02:45...Jarred raises the stakes.
02:50This is a huge gamble.
02:53Diamond in the rough, maybe?
02:55We're going to take this out there.
02:57Yeah.
03:00Oh, God, no.
03:03Trying to catch up here.
03:06Stretched thinner than ever...
03:08We're going up the rough!
03:11He and the crew must deliver both barge royalties...
03:18...and claw out a $2 million profit...
03:23...before Winter's grip shuts them down.
03:27It's all or nothing...
03:29...for one final shot...
03:31...at the forever clay.
03:48Morning.
03:49Morning.
03:55There we go.
04:06It's early fall in the Pacific Northwest.
04:09And following an extended nine-week fire shutdown...
04:13...Jarred Douglas and the Cypress Creek crew are back in business.
04:24Hey, guys, come on in here.
04:27I'm shaking.
04:29With all operations going full speed ahead...
04:32...we're on stride to make the royalty payments with John.
04:36But the big picture is...
04:37...buying the forever claim at the end of the season.
04:41It's going to be a real struggle...
04:43...to get me to where I need to be before Winter's shutdown.
04:47I got Ross and Brad up here right now.
04:50I have an idea.
04:51This is our last Hail Mary attempt...
04:54...to make this happen.
04:58Fire season f***ed us.
05:00Like, this was a long shift.
05:02It's really put us behind.
05:03Yeah.
05:04Yeah, it was an ass-kicker for sure.
05:05Great for fishing, but not for logging.
05:07We got eight weeks left of the season...
05:09...before Winter chases us out of here.
05:12I've crunched some numbers, and we're way behind.
05:16Even with both crews working in forever claim...
05:19...it's not enough.
05:22Even if you fill those barges to the brim...
05:24...at 100k royalty per barge...
05:26...we're not going to get out from under that.
05:28We're still going to be at least $200,000 short...
05:31...by the end of the season.
05:32I need to move into a really profitable operation...
05:36...if I'm going to hit my goal by Winter's shutdown.
05:40So...
05:42...we're going to split up the crews...
05:44...and go to another claim.
05:45Hey, where are we going?
05:47It's called Cash Lock Creek.
05:48It's in Chief Jerry Jack's territory.
05:51It's an old claim.
05:52It hasn't been logged in decades...
05:54...but the wood is good out there.
05:55It already has roads, so we can hit the ground running...
05:58...with almost no startup costs.
06:00But we need to move float camp from Forever Claim...
06:03...to Cash Lock Creek...
06:04...set up base camp...
06:05...so we can start splashing logs.
06:08If we can get this happening...
06:10...that's going to boost up our profits by 30%.
06:13Okay.
06:14Well, at least we've got a place to go.
06:16That's good.
06:17Yeah.
06:19Well...
06:20Jerry hasn't said yes yet.
06:25Hopefully we get the green light...
06:26...but I want camp ready to move in the morning.
06:28Well, okay.
06:30Right quick.
06:30Right quick.
06:31Okay.
06:32All right.
06:33I love the pressure.
06:34No rest for the wicked here.
06:36Pressure is a privilege.
06:37Ross, you've got to prep float camp to move.
06:39Brad, you're going to have to keep Forever Claim...
06:41...pumping the wood in until the next log barge.
06:43It has to be full.
06:44We left a bunch of timber at that cup block to the east...
06:48...before the shutdown.
06:49I remember the one yet.
06:50I'm going to need you to supervise...
06:52...and I'm going to need you to be out there hook tending as well.
06:54You're going to have to pull double duties here.
06:56Okay.
06:57Get those logs off that hill.
06:58Forever Claim can't miss a beat.
07:00Arch has to be full.
07:01No excuses.
07:03It's two million dollars or bust in eight weeks.
07:08You're crazy.
07:08You're crazy.
07:10We all know what's at stake here.
07:12Do or die.
07:13Well, hopefully Jerry Jack will give you the green light.
07:45All back.
07:47good take it the next forever claim barge arrives in less than two weeks so foreman brad leads the
07:56charge to harvest a hillside of fallen timber leftover from the summer season obviously as a
08:03woods foreman you know i got a lot of things to cover and a lot of things to stress about
08:07so
08:07when these situations happen and we're shorthanded i actually enjoy coming back onto the hill
08:12i did this job for years and years so when i'm out here it all just kind of melts away
08:16and i'm just
08:17having fun with my boys
08:24good there you got her take it
08:36as a hook tender in these situations you got to have your head on a swivel i'm not only watching
08:40dave bring that log in i'm also glancing back at my tail hold the tail holds moving around everything
08:47i've got it tied back to it's all just trying to breathe you know i've got to be thumb on
08:52the button
08:52here if things look a little bit too weak i've got to be able to call off that pressure in
08:56a moment's
08:57notice okay dave i'm in the clear skinner back a bit here okay skinner back
09:18it would appear that our haulback actually parted or broke
09:25now we're at a standstill i'm gonna have to get the operator to just drag the logs and the choker
09:30and everything back into the landing now we're behind we're trying to trying to finish this
09:35setting today but i'm not sure if that'll happen now
09:48back down on the water crewmen prep one of the claims to float camps for travel
09:53as jared embarks for a make or break meeting i'm just heading to see chief jerry jack
09:59jack his nation is looking for someone to harvest one of their territories and i'm really hoping i'm
10:06the man for the job look at the landscape up here it's insane everything's just so green out here
10:13look at the cedar trees lots of money i need this my crew needs this and cypress creek needs this
10:24chief jerry jack is a very powerful man and his nation is a very powerful nation
10:29we are very close allies and jerry jack is a great friend but jerry jack and his nation could easily
10:38say
10:38they did not want to work with cypress creek that right there would be catastrophic for my business
10:46how you doing jared good yourself good absolutely stunning out here today look at it where we're
10:54standing today belongs to me and my family this belongs to you and your family yeah this whole beach
10:59all the way from that end to that end i hear the nation's got a new territory that they're looking
11:05for someone to harvest we do we have we have something uh you need a logger for that by chance
11:29i think this opportunity to be really great for us jerry and our company to really use this
11:43i've trusted you all these years to do what you're doing in our territory and i've seen the way
11:49you do your business and i appreciate it and uh you really respect our our lands and that's important
11:55to much much let first nation i have trust in you you have my approval right now thanks jerry
12:02you're welcome very very grateful for the opportunity yes it'll be good for both of us i believe
12:08because i'm all about keeping people to work and live happy lives okay jerry well i won't keep you
12:14but i really appreciate your time i'll talk to you soon talk to you soon
12:23back at the forever claim
12:39the yarding operation hits a breaking point
12:50sad looking situation boys yeah it looks like the eye blew apart i'll just cut that off and then
12:56we'll get going
13:01now i'm back under the stress of the operation this this machine isn't producing we're not getting
13:06wood to the road the loader's not going to have any wood to load the truckers aren't going to have
13:09any
13:09wood to haul to move giant timber a grapple yarder's cable or line must be securely strung across the hill
13:20but if that line breaks it's up to the crew to reel it back in and repair the broken end
13:25so it can be re-anchored up the hill
13:36we'll do what's called the logger's eyes and logger's eyes where you take every strand tuck it
13:41once twice three times and it becomes strong enough to withstand the the forces that we're
13:45going to apply to it okay so right now we're just trying to go as quick as possible to get
13:49this
13:50this place done so we can get back logging you know we were we were behind the eight ball
13:56before we broke the haul back but now all this takes time and energy
14:01time that we could have had yarding logs but that's the name of the game
14:05logging's what you do between the ups
14:10no hammer
14:11yes
14:14brute force and ignorance
14:24there we go that was pretty quick brad that thing's gonna uh maybe outlast us all hopefully
14:35now we've got a fresh eye so trent and i will actually take the straw line the small wire off
14:39of
14:39our grapple yarder head out into the bush re-put it through the tail hole block and come back and
14:45connect it to this whole back eye once that's all in place and we'll be able to start logging again
14:49pick up where we left off
14:53let's get some logs
15:10it's pretty nice in here seeing some of the biggest trees i've seen down in here
15:16the next morning high on the mountain fallers jim gardner and rob winger discover a rare patch of end of
15:23life cycle giants
15:30oh what's that down there holy
15:35jesus
15:37that's a big one jim yeah look at that thing thing is huge
16:01that's been a long time since i've seen something this big
16:12bft big tree
16:19there's a certain uniqueness and a certain challenge to a big big tree and not everyone can cut down a
16:25big
16:25tree physically strenuous mentally challenging and it's dangerous there's a lot of things that you
16:32have to overcome mostly in your head but overcoming that pushing myself that's something you'd lick your
16:37chops so to speak you're hungry for um what uh what do you think you're gonna do jim let's take
16:45a look at
16:45the back and see what we got holding on oh this looks like a problem we've got rot coming through
16:55this thing and
16:57all the different areas there's a lot of overhead looking at this half moon bottom
17:04kind of a shell it's not standing on much
17:07the legs are skinny what we have is compromised as it is you can stand up inside though
17:17solid solid solid up there i think the top's a beautiful piece of wood
17:23so this is worth quite a bit of money yeah maybe
17:28it's a big tree it's a big red cedar and it's standing on a couple of legs so it's going
17:35to be
17:35tricky to fall he's going to have to find sound wood somewhere in that base where he can use to
17:42control the direction of fall of that tree the only holding wood you got back here is this one strap
17:48too
17:50it's solid there but once you get 14 16 inches in there it's just rotten
17:56i think the biggest challenge is yeah getting it cut up enough without it going on its own
18:04yeah dude i don't know i don't know man i got my doubts
18:17weighing over 120 tons this bft could easily crumple off its compromised base crushing jim in the process
18:27so he'll have to very carefully make a massive face cut one section at a time and save the
18:33strongest wood in the back for last then he'll finish with a 13 foot wide back cut and hopefully
18:41send the whole thing down on a soft bed of debris all right rob let's quit talking about it let's
18:49just
18:49start cutting and get this bft to the ground sounds good to me
19:08this is the biggest tree i've ever cut it's definitely worth a lot
19:13so we got to take care of this thing we're going to try and let this thing down gently if
19:19we can
19:20but as it sits it's a bft and it's probably going to go sideways or it's probably going to go
19:25in an
19:25tent direction who knows what's going to happen
19:41yeah
19:42yeah time to go
19:45always stressful day everybody knows that yeah after more than a month at the forever claim
19:51jared makes the hard call to move one of the two float camps to a new post at cash a
19:57lot creek
19:58there might be some yelling and screaming don't take it personal it's just what happens
20:03home away from home for the crew this float camp is one of the most vital assets in jared's operation
20:10but with a second one on lease and already anchored at the forever claim this two million dollar barge
20:16will be more vital at cash a lot but the move doesn't come without risk
20:23flow camp is very important to me it's changed the game of my company it's made me way more successful
20:28so i get a little bit nervous every time we go to move it i do not need any holes
20:34in this camp we just
20:35put a ton of money into it we're not putting any dance in my hole and we're gonna have to
20:41spin this
20:42barge in this tight area right in the middle here yeah so we're gonna have to be fairly organized what
20:47we're doing here to get this behemoth back out to sea jared and his five-man crew must thread a
20:55needle between sharp rocks to one side and a floating log pin to the other all under the power of
21:02two boom
21:03boats and a single tug everything moves slow but it can hurt you so keep your hands out of the
21:10way
21:10of everything make sure you don't put your fingers in it right leon yeah how many you got left
21:18we got this we know what we're doing all right okay let's go
21:30once he gets the rope in then i'll just back in there and hook up okay keeping them away from
21:38shore so when all the short ties are done we can pull we need to make sure we get the
21:43barge spun around
21:44in here and away we go okay glenn i'm in the winder just let me know if you need anything
21:57yeah we should be all right here we're spinning them they don't spin it too quickly that's a tight
22:02turn it is a tight turn but glenn knows what he's doing yeah he's got to be rubbing right alongside
22:08the
22:08blooming grounds there he's got the velvet touch with a big tug but if i've never seen him get this
22:15close to it don't scrape the paint
22:27sakes you got no power
22:32power i got no steering
22:37boss power has no steering and he's got your barge on board yeah that's great that's great
22:46it's drifting into the grounds there this is not good
23:05oh man this is fun
23:11back in the hills above brad and his crew are on the second day of re-rigging the main anchor
23:16point
23:16or tail hold for their yarder
23:22so right now trent and i have finished the string taking the straw line from the yarder
23:26all the way up to my tail hold we're in the clear next step is to get the command to
23:31the operator to
23:31start going ahead on the straw line drum which will essentially pull that big business end of our
23:36hall back with the eye through the tail hole block back to the landing read me dave hello
23:43yeah all clear back here head on straw anytime okay going ahead on straw here
23:53there we go okay now we run for our life
24:01okay dave i'm in the clear go ahead
24:06so these last few logs are actually going to be some of the
24:09the diciest ones to go after here but see what happens
24:26oh
24:35a little flick to the left there crossing there for all back big whip over
24:44oh you're getting there
24:51oh
24:52slack her down slack her down slack her down
25:08yep that is a pulled tail hold
25:14this clump of trees that came over it didn't actually have a really good root mat
25:18it wasn't tied into the forest floor as well as i'd hoped for it to have been
25:22but you know this is this is logging
25:27it's been a day
25:34higher up the mountain
25:44so what we're looking for right here is an even level cut from one end to the other perfectly straight
25:50got to get this wedge out of here
25:53wedge out of there and that last one out of there
26:00tank of gas already yeah that is a big tree
26:06we don't normally come across trees like this in the first place you don't see them this big
26:12let alone have them be dangerous having to tackle them
26:15having it so big and so much of a shell it creates a huge hazard so i'm going to start
26:20my back
26:20cut on the high side and then i'm going to come into the inside and then cut the guts out
26:24of it
26:25i would leave this and then cut up as much as you can on the inside and then cut this
26:32fingers crossed this thing goes over hopefully it just goes over if not
26:36finish her over there okay man make some noise
26:51is it getting tight at all yeah it's going to want a pinching towards me watch when you come out
26:57it
26:57doesn't grab you probably just wants to drop straight down
27:03skybound we call them they don't really have a lean any which way so they want to drop straight
27:08down which means it just wanted to pinch pinch pinch pinch pinchy pinchy pinchy
27:14it's not necessarily common for a tree to do something like this for the most part they just
27:18want to fall over rob's johnny on the spot with all the wedges watch your eyeballs totally clear
27:33this whole thing's starting to pinch in so if i pull her out to here yeah and just feather it
27:38yeah yeah yeah
27:48hopefully
27:53it's lifted so i'll cut the rest of the guts out and then i'll cut this strap
28:30it's not good man no take your bar off
28:36here nuts cover
28:44it's tight it's tight
28:49wound up getting my bar pinch wound up getting my chain pinch
28:56having it so big there's tons up above your head and it's all sitting down on this tiny little point
29:04yo
29:32all right
29:34call that good sacrifice the chain to the bft
29:39yep that's a good thing that's not coming out
29:42you got another chain yeah you got another big wedge yeah i'll try tripling up see
29:51lifting easy now oh that's actually a bit of good news out of the depths of despair
30:04i'm talking i think there's a nibble left over here because it should have gone by now
30:14uh
30:18we're making a little bit of a good news out of the depths of despair
30:39yeah she's talking yep
30:41That was a bit... Jimmy strikes again. Thanks man. Pinched on every corner. Pinchy
30:50pinched. Oh there's holding wood all the way across. Look at that. In the end it
30:55wound up going in our direction but it sure as hell did not want to. I don't know
31:00where your chain went. This was our holding wood. This was our strap we left.
31:05Perfect. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. We kind of lost a chain but look at this
31:10that's a great big log. It's... what's that? 80 feet? 13 feet through. That's nothing
31:17but volume. This BFT is 13 feet. 13 feet is huge. Take advantage. Enjoy it. Lap it up. Few and
31:26far between these things. This is what it's all about right here. Right now. We got
31:30the big tree on the ground. Glad we had so many wedges. Could have used one more.
32:06Oh yeah. There's a stump.
32:092,000 feet below. The race continues to make up lost time.
32:16So I found a decent cedar stump here on top of this ridge. It's in lead with the
32:20first road line of wood that we're going to take. I got to tie it back. This is my
32:25little insurance policy. Putting a twister tie back and then it should be solid enough for
32:32for us to yard off of. Okay. Just want it tight enough to pluck a tune. A sharp. Okay.
32:44Okay. Okay. I'll go. Give her. Are those guy lines feeling pretty solid there?
33:00All right. That's fine.
33:01All right. So right now we're cycling the grapple again. You know, it's going as good as it can
33:11right now. There's some hope here that we're going to pick up some of that time that we lost
33:16yesterday. So we're just going to keep plugging away at it and hopefully Murphy's law doesn't kick us in
33:21the teeth again.
33:38Right in front of me here, I got this kind of a rogue log that was tipped by the fallers
33:43back into
33:43the timber, but it's actually a good piece of merge wood. It's quite a ways away from our yarding line.
33:49So right now I've made the call to the landing guy. He's going to send me an extension for my
33:53choker
33:53and then put an extension on my choker. It's called what we call tagging.
34:00Good.
34:16Okay, Dave, I'm in the clear.
34:17Okay.
34:18Here we go, boss.
34:24Just coming tight now. Yeah. Just a nice gradual pull. Yeah. Stump's pulling here. Right on. Keep it going. Keep
34:31it going. Keep it going.
34:34Keep it going. Perfect.
34:37I'll try to throw it in the grapple. It's just behind that stump on the ridge here.
34:41Main's ready down in a hole there. Down, down, down. Good. Back easy. Good. Take it.
34:49It's a satisfying moment when your whole plan can come to fruition without breaking the log, breaking the cable,
34:56pulling a tail hole. When everything clicks together just like you thought it would, it's a satisfying feeling.
35:04It's a good day. Just head down and see how much of a stack we got now.
35:14Nice work, boys. Another job well done. Got more wood than yesterday. Better day today.
35:21Yeah, it's like we found a whole nother gear. This is not a bad little patch compared to that battle
35:25we were doing, but...
35:26We actually got some wood here now.
35:34Back on the water, Jared and the float camp crew face a ticking clock of their own.
35:40You got no power.
35:43The tug has no steering right now. He's lost power. So right now we're not in a good position.
35:52It's drifting into the grounds there.
35:56I've got float camp heading towards the booming ground.
35:58Worst case scenario is a tugboat up on the rocks and a float camp wedged into the booming grounds.
36:05It will create massive delay in production and money. This is not good.
36:12Leon, I just need to watch the side cameras.
36:16I'll stay on the side here, on your port.
36:29Did you get your steering back?
36:32Okay, we're good. That was too close for comfort.
36:36All right, we can just get that other side of the bridle on.
36:38He'll be able to suck it out of here before he drifts into the grounds.
36:48You just passed the end of the booming grounds.
36:54Hey, good job.
36:56All right, bud.
36:58Now we've cleared all the danger, but we still have a very tight landing to make.
37:05So we're going to have to definitely be on our A-game when we get there.
37:22So we're going to have a very tight end of our看看.
37:23We're going to have a very tight end of our team.
37:28We'll be waiting for you.
37:29We're going to have a nice meeting here, We out here when drop down our now.
37:40They've been working on the booming ground and the landing for the last couple days.
37:45Everything's set up.
37:46We got lots of support, so I'm excited.
37:50I'm extremely excited on this new operation.
37:56Once we get inside the booming ground, we will spin it, the stern will go up against
38:02the beach, and it'll just nicely gently slide itself right in there.
38:08It's nice and deep in here, Glen.
38:09You're going to have no problems.
38:13Okay, Leon, we're going in.
38:15Brent's pushing everything out of our way here.
38:18Okay.
38:24Everything's looking good.
38:27I'm just going to keep bumping it in and out of gear here to keep our speed down.
38:31Why don't you think you could start pulling your end around to the beach?
38:35You can if you want.
38:37Copy that, bud.
38:41Still looking good.
38:42Still looking good, yeah.
38:42Still looking good.
38:44Oh, .
38:46And overboard.
38:49Oh, .
38:58Oh, .
39:05You all right?
39:06You okay, Brent?
39:07Yeah, I'm okay.
39:09Holy .
39:13Here, get over there.
39:14I'll give him a hat.
39:27How long has that been since that's happened?
39:29Four or five months.
39:31Oh.
39:33You didn't hit anything, did you?
39:35Yeah.
39:35It just slipped in?
39:37Oh, yeah.
39:38Okay.
39:41You can't let him lift that one down.
39:43Holy .
39:45Holy .
39:46That's scary.
39:47Like, you never know.
39:48Oh, yeah.
39:56Yeah.
40:07That's probably good right there.
40:12.
40:12I like that in there.
40:13I really like that.
40:15Besides one guy going swimming, that was a nice landing.
40:21Now that flow camp is in place, I know I have a little bit of breathing room.
40:25And my team and I can really tackle this claim.
40:29Huge success.
40:30Giant win for us.
40:31We got her done.
40:32We're here.
40:32Let's just finish up here, guys, and get out of this rain.
40:34Yeah, you bet.
40:35Right on.
40:38This is a huge gamble.
40:40Carve a chunk of those guys out, send them elsewhere to a place they've never been to.
40:46But if I want to complete my growth, I need to take some big risks like I'm doing to get
40:53there.
40:59Next time.
41:00Oh .
41:01We can't keep running this.
41:03One side's broken.
41:05When the other side breaks, a logger may lose the entire track.
41:08Come on!
41:10It's going to take a lot of finesse to actually get this log up and over that obstacle.
41:14Whoa.
41:15Uh-oh.
41:18With this bridge down, this means no trucks going in, no trucks going out, no cash hitting my bank account.
41:25I need to get this bridge in right now.
41:27Oh-ho!
41:31This season on The Last Woodsman.
41:36I have eight weeks to raise $1 million and to deliver $100,000 per barge royalties.
41:45Beauty!
41:46I have to claw, scratch my way out of this hole that I've dug myself in.
41:55My operation is stretched thin.
41:57I've got operations here.
41:59I've got operations there.
42:00We need to get to this timber.
42:02Yeah.
42:02I'm going to need to introduce some new followers.
42:05Oh, come on!
42:09I've got my crew working as fast and as hard as they can, but I'm not sure it's going to
42:14be enough.
42:14We're about to do something that we've never done before.
42:17This is crazy.
42:18If I'm going to hit my goal to buy the forever claim.
42:22Everything, and I mean everything from here on out, has to go right.
42:25Mother !
42:26Hang in there!
42:27Get out of here!
42:28What are you doing?
42:28I'm not sure.
42:28You're looking for all of us.
42:29I'm not sure.
42:30I'm not sure.
42:31You're looking for more!
