00:14Winter here on the island, it is bleak, the sky is grey, the ground is grey, but as we
00:27come out of winter and get into early spring it's like everybody comes out of
00:34hibernation and there's an energy that comes. People are in a rush, the harbour
00:42starts getting a lot more traffic, boats start going in the water, everybody's
00:48gonna get ready. The first two fisheries are scallop and crab. Today we're
00:54prepping for the crab season, two trailer loads of crabs down to the war. My goal is
00:59to get the boat in the water today, I said I'd have it in by Thursday but today
01:03we're Friday. Showtime! Big days working the boat, make sure everything is working
01:09properly. Think there's gonna be any crab? I hope so. We're four days from scallop
01:13season, already had the boat for a little sail, we're definitely on the upswing from
01:18last year, but I mean you can never be too confident that's for sure. New Year, see
01:24what happens. Let's go make some money! Let's get it! Here we go! Just itching to get back out there.
01:31Oh yeah, sunrise baby! Such a beautiful morning! Every year the same thing. Eat, fish, sleep, repeat.
01:40Pray the crab gods are with us. There's a pride of being a fishing community, knowing this was the same
01:47industry that your ancestors worked in. I love fishing man. Best job in the world.
01:53What we're looking for!
01:58Every time, sweet Christmas! What are you going to get? The rewards can be amazing.
02:0444! Yes! I believe I can fly. But it's not an easy job. Here on in, it's pain and misery.
02:13If it wasn't for the rough weather, I don't think I'd be a fisherman. It's my dream job.
02:20A miserable day!
02:23Oh my my! Are you sure you want to be a fisherman?
02:27We got two days of hell coming.
02:30Not the nicest day to catch on to things.
02:32Hold on to her boys! Hold on to her!
02:34Ah, shit! A lot of guys aren't going. If you break down, you're getting washed up on the beach somewhere.
02:40Go, go, go! Easy!
02:43Whoa, whoa!
02:45Miles, we're sure to fall overboard, you're going to die.
02:49Hooked in the rope.
02:51There's a good chance you're not getting free.
02:53Watch out, watch out. Get away for it.
02:55That's why you can't have no weather doing this shit. Dangerous.
02:58I don't know what's going on here. Get a knife!
03:04Not a place to play around with for sure.
03:07Pull the arms off you boys.
03:09Because the risk is so great.
03:11Not a soul to no one.
03:13It can lead to conflict.
03:14You'd have every one of those boats that we're at.
03:17People change. Fishing starts.
03:19Biting and cutting gear.
03:21Jesus Christ, man.
03:23Tour trap first.
03:24Someone just cut four taps off my trawl.
03:27Well, shit!
03:29They're just stealing.
03:30You don't do that to another fisherman, man.
03:31This is our ground.
03:33They shouldn't be here.
03:34There are unwritten rules.
03:37And there can be consequences.
03:42Not again!
03:43Another nightmare.
03:44Something's not right.
03:47Well, well, well, well, well, well.
03:49I lost my steering.
03:53He'll have to take me in.
03:54There can be grudges, but we have no choice but to work together.
03:58Go! Go!
04:00Our island is literally eroding away into the ocean.
04:03And sometimes it feels the same for our community.
04:07If I stay here, I might not ever go away.
04:10If I go away, I might not ever come back.
04:12You know, I grew up into it.
04:13For me, I don't know any other way than fishing.
04:18Fishing, it made our community exist.
04:21If you don't have that, then do you really exist as a community anymore?
04:26That's what's at risk.
04:28I feel I was meant to be a fisherman.
04:30That's why I'm here.
04:31Oh!
04:32That's a big, great one!
04:35We got to feed the people of the world so we can feed ourselves.
04:41Here we go!
05:02A little nervous.
05:04We'll see what's out there soon.
05:06In the Gulf of St. Lawrence, scallop season is underway.
05:10And Captain William Burke is taking a big risk.
05:15You always feel nervous before the first day.
05:18You never know what's out there, how everything's going to go.
05:22He's venturing far off the beaten path, starting his season on untested grounds.
05:28Day one, we're going somewhere.
05:30The other boat's ain't.
05:32I like to go check something else out first.
05:35Sometimes to hit them big, you got to take a chance.
05:37Living the dream.
05:38We're living the dream.
05:41Here we go.
05:44Let's see if we can't cook something up here this morning.
05:47Returning for his fourth season, deck boss Tyson Scott.
05:51Oh yeah, we're cooking.
05:53He'll take that in bed.
05:56Sort of William's right-hand man when it comes down to things.
05:59Make sure everything's running smoothly.
06:01Doing the old boat-baking method.
06:04The old bacon stew.
06:06He's got that spunk that you need.
06:09They're the deck boss.
06:10Trying to wake them up.
06:12Oh yeah.
06:13Keep everyone on their toes and pumped up.
06:17Good morning boys.
06:19Are you ready for another season of Moonship on the Scallop Badge?
06:26Yes sir.
06:27We're cooking breakfast for you, so you better get up and eat it.
06:31As the season goes on, we cook less often, but the first day we try and get a
06:37breakfast in at least.
06:39Get your own eggs boys.
06:41Thanks bud.
06:42The work day on a scallop boat all depends.
06:45You never know what's going to happen, so it's pretty important to be prepared.
06:49Are we ready or what boys?
06:51I fucking formed anybody.
06:54The Moonship arrives at the captain's secret spot.
06:57A sandy stretch of ocean floor, hopefully full of scallops.
07:02All right boys, it's been three years.
07:05You're reading this speech off the phone.
07:07I don't got it memorized man.
07:09I wrote it last night.
07:11It's been three years boys.
07:13Three years aboard the Moonship.
07:15Three years of breaking down and fixing up.
07:18And it's probably going to be a fourth year of the exact same thing.
07:21So never give up.
07:23I believe in this crew and I think it's the best crew that we ever had.
07:27So let's go prove our fucking points boys.
07:29Let's go.
07:30Pull back guys.
07:31Come on boys.
07:34This year we feel more ready than ever.
07:41Feeling really good about this season.
07:43Pull back.
07:44Yeah.
07:44Pulling the heads there.
07:46See how they come.
07:47Here we go boys.
07:50Scallop fishing.
07:51Probably the hardest job out there for a fisherman.
07:54Yep.
07:5716 toes a day.
07:58Go boys.
08:0120 hours in a 24 hour day.
08:03There's no rest for the wicked.
08:04Get these tables clean.
08:06May the Scallop Gods be with you.
08:10If the captain's gamble is going to pay off.
08:13Clean tables quick.
08:14They'll know it in the first toe.
08:17Seems to be a few but not crazy.
08:20Okay switch.
08:21Switch boys.
08:22One guy stay over there.
08:24The crew hope for better luck on the other side.
08:27Up.
08:32Hey let's go boys.
08:38That's all.
08:40Not much to it like.
08:43The first toe of the year is a bust.
08:46Just five baskets of scallops.
08:49Jesus.
08:50We're still looking around yet.
08:53I wouldn't spend my day on that one track.
08:56Gonna have to find the scallops.
08:58Not gonna give up yet.
09:00When catches are poor on the moon ship, everyone loses.
09:04My guys are getting paid by the pound.
09:06They're on a percentage.
09:08So the better we do, the better they do.
09:10That's why everyone's down.
09:12They take it serious.
09:13They don't like to lose money either.
09:21They don't like to lose money.
09:44They're pulling like 11 baskets out of us on.
09:46Holy pot to get over there and double us.
09:50Yeah he's getting some good catches over there.
09:52So we're gonna get back over there and join in.
09:56It'll burn three hours of fuel and fishing time.
09:59But to salvage the start of the season,
10:02the captain has no choice but to cut and run.
10:05I've grown up 11 baskets.
10:07That's probably 130 pounds.
10:09So 22 bucks a pound.
10:11That's pretty crazy.
10:13He's off to a pretty shitty start there.
10:25Good?
10:26Yep.
10:27By daylight, another wave of boats sets off from the Magdalen Islands,
10:32charging head first into the snow crab opening.
10:35We're headed to the crab grounds.
10:37It's opening day for snow crab.
10:40Get ready for Operation Shit Show to commence.
10:45This year, the captains are already feeling the squeeze.
10:50Quotas have been slashed by 30% to allow stocks to recover.
10:55Everybody's quotas just got cut across the board.
10:57So you can't bring in as much crab.
10:59And if you can't bring in as much crab, well, your revenues go down.
11:05You've got to hope and pray that the price goes up with the quota going down.
11:11You're not sure you're able to make your payment.
11:13You know, it's a lot to think about.
11:15You want to be able to provide for your family.
11:17With catch limits cut, this season's market price will make or break the captain's year.
11:23I need at least $4 a pound just to arrive.
11:27If we don't, then you're not into business for very long, right?
11:32Ready!
11:34Okay!
11:36Under way.
11:38Under way.
11:39The boat, Le Bioc, has battled these waters for decades.
11:44Good!
11:45But this season, there's a new skipper at the helm.
11:49It's my first time setting the gear on setting day.
11:52It's pretty exciting.
11:54There was a period last night I felt a little jittery.
11:57Kevin Clark spent a small fortune last season on his uncle's boat in quota.
12:05Last year was a completely new fishery to me.
12:08You know, I've never been aboard that boat before and there was a lot to take in, a lot to
12:13learn.
12:15During his rookie year, his uncle was on his shoulder, calling the shots from the passenger seat.
12:23All right, call for sure. All of you.
12:25But now, Kevin is solo in the wheelhouse. The burden of finding the crab is his alone.
12:32Will there be any crab in there? That's on me.
12:36I've got to make all the decisions. I've got to set the traps and fish them all. So that's going
12:41to be different.
12:44To increase his odds of success, he stacked the deck with veterans, including his uncle.
12:5029.
12:5129.
12:5129.
12:52Yeah, Ben.
12:53Yeah.
12:53The tag number, the next one is 229.
12:56Yep.
12:56Along with long-time fisherman, Miles Clark.
13:00With all of them out there, the experience on deck, it's a good feeling.
13:04094, the next one.
13:05Yep.
13:06I've got to get this done as quick as possible because time is money and something that I'm a bit
13:12short of now,
13:13being a new owner.
13:15Okay.
13:15Yep.
13:16Okay, start.
13:17All right.
13:18Good.
13:23Last one to run off.
13:26By day's end...
13:27Here we go.
13:28Yeah, doggy.
13:29Here we go.
13:30That's all.
13:31...thousands of crab pods are set on the ocean floor surrounding the Magdalene Islands.
13:37Here we go.
13:38Good.
13:39Good.
13:40Good.
13:40Oh, my bad day, boys.
13:42And captains are anxious to get back out and start fishing.
13:45Yeah, one step closer to seeing what's on them.
13:49Can't wait.
13:56But Mother Nature has other plans.
14:01Winter has moved back in overnight, blasting the maggies with a late-season snowstorm.
14:09We're trying to get out for crab.
14:10I guess everybody is.
14:12Got the Magdalene Island weather rolling in.
14:15It really shows today.
14:17The storm grinds everyone to a halt just hours before the season opens.
14:23I guess everybody's waiting to go.
14:26Just waiting for Mother Nature to give us a break in the weather so we can get out there.
14:32Captain Stephen Clark is also playing the waiting game.
14:35Tomorrow's getting beautiful in the afternoon, but then really starts going sideways once she hits midnight.
14:46Battle on the cold and wind.
14:50One captain needs a bigger break in the weather than most.
14:54There's just a big enough window tomorrow to get my traps up.
14:58Adam Clark is facing a logistical nightmare.
15:01He has to reach his traps he set two days ago.
15:04But the storm is directly in his path.
15:08You got to go when the weather's permitting you to go.
15:11Let's have one extra one then.
15:14Far to the north of the Magdalene Islands, and just offshore from Anticosti Island,
15:20is Zone 12C, Adam's snow crab license.
15:24Isolated, exposed, and miles from hell.
15:27Basically the closest sail is 100 miles, and the furthest sail would be 150 miles.
15:34What were you checking on, Marine?
15:36I was checking them all.
15:38Wind diminishing to light Thursday morning, then increasing to southeast 20 Thursday evening.
15:43The weather needs to hold for a full 24 hours.
15:46Long enough to reach his zone, fish his traps, and return home safely.
15:53Not much of a window, so I'm on my phone every forecast, every change of weather.
15:58Where are you going tomorrow?
15:59I don't know, Jake.
16:01With Adam, with crab, like, if there's bad weather, he's got to analyze the weather here,
16:06but also the weather there.
16:09I tell you, there's quite a swell coming in.
16:11You're looking at time and different forecasts, trying to make the best call.
16:16Hope they never have to use these.
16:18The crew is prepped for the worst, but the captain isn't ready to make the call.
16:23Maybe we should leave these out for tomorrow.
16:25Come on, don't start saying that shit.
16:27Get that under there.
16:28Put that away.
16:29Lising up.
16:31The new forecast didn't change much.
16:34Never really got any worse, nor did it get any better.
16:38Stuck in the middle, with a decision.
16:41Stay put till possibly next week sometime.
16:45I'm not worried about getting off.
16:46I'm worried about getting back home.
16:48And I'm worried about it.
16:50Hey mate, doing it?
16:53I'm stumped.
16:54This was about the hardest decision I ever had to make.
17:17I'll give you news here tomorrow morning.
17:20Most islanders are winding down for the night,
17:23but Captain Adam is just getting started.
17:27Tomorrow.
17:33It's always hard to say goodbye.
17:35I'll give them a kiss goodnight, you know.
17:38It's always tough.
17:41But when it's fishing time, you know, hey, you gotta go fishing.
17:46The weather has calmed since morning.
17:48Enough for Adam to risk a trip to his remote fishing grounds.
17:52We're off for Anacosti.
17:5460 traps up there to pick up.
17:57Supposed to be no wind.
17:59Sometimes the wind can hit quicker than what it says.
18:03The weather window is tight.
18:05The next system is already on its way.
18:08Getting a bit of wind again tomorrow night.
18:10So hopefully on my way back home before the wind hits.
18:13We've got 24 hours of what we have.
18:17Everyone's aboard?
18:19At Grand Entry Harbor, his crew is ready and waiting.
18:23Okay, wait.
18:24What?
18:26A duck?
18:27Along with a stowaway.
18:33Can you set him on the wharf, maybe?
18:36Hey, pick him up and put him out of the wharf.
18:40There you go.
18:42Ducks don't hurt you.
18:43They can't fly out of the boat like that.
18:47There, boy.
18:49Poor guy.
18:50Must be cold.
18:51It'll be hot.
18:54All right, so we got everything.
18:56Yeah.
18:56Everyone's here.
18:57Let's go.
18:59Here we go.
19:01It's pretty still, so it's looking good for that.
19:13Hey, boys.
19:14This is our chance to catch up here.
19:16Off the southeastern shores of the Magdalene.
19:19Yeah, bull man.
19:20The moon ship's desperate move to new grounds.
19:23Yeah, baby.
19:24Is paying off.
19:25Woo!
19:26Now on their third day at sea, catches are up, and so is morale.
19:31Let's go, Ducks.
19:32Go, Ducks.
19:33Go, Ducks.
19:33Go, Ducks.
19:34Go, Ducks.
19:34Go, Ducks.
19:35That's good.
19:36You guys are getting paid by the percentage rate.
19:38So happy to see you catches are really good.
19:40Switch.
19:41That's the sound I like to hear.
19:43Come on, boys.
19:44Yeah, baby.
19:45What do you need?
19:47Deck boss Tyson has been setting the pace.
19:50Yep.
19:51Unloading each catch onto the sorting tables.
19:54Okay, dumping pole.
19:55Dumping pole is hooked to the bottom of the drags with a rope on it.
19:59Pretty important.
20:00It's a way to flip six drags together.
20:02Yep.
20:02The wooden pole can handle the tough, sea-soaked work.
20:05Let's go, boys.
20:06But it's still light enough for easy handling.
20:08Yeah, baby!
20:10Woo!
20:12Listen to the money.
20:14What we came here to do.
20:16The new grounds have doubled their catch, hauling up to 10 full baskets each toe.
20:22We're running out of baskets just like I planned.
20:26Yeah, that looks a lot better.
20:28That's what we're looking for.
20:30Well, we hooked a little bit more there.
20:32Got the boys feeling a bit better about the move.
20:35We jump bottom, so always a gamble.
20:37Oh, oh, oh, oh!
20:40Now, look at that.
20:42The size of that.
20:43What a beautiful scallop.
20:44We're on the right path by the looks of it.
20:47That's another reason why.
20:48Never give up, boys!
20:50Woo!
20:51You get a good patch of scallops, you know it, and you're looking at a good season.
20:55This might be tell of the day.
20:58White gold.
21:00How much will a bag work?
21:01Oh, a bag of scallops.
21:03A little over $1,000 right there.
21:08Oh, we smiled.
21:10That's wow.
21:12The day is going good.
21:14Feeling pretty confident in my gear and boat and whatnot right now.
21:20We're going to do good.
21:21Hang on to the side.
21:23We're down.
21:23Yeah.
21:24Yeah.
21:25Whoa.
21:25Dump it ball.
21:27Huh?
21:27Dump it ball, bro.
21:30Let's go.
21:31Is it broken too?
21:32Yeah, it's broken too.
21:33Holy fuck.
21:35The crucial piece of equipment snapped during the last tow.
21:39Get that one untied.
21:40Get the rope nice for the dump it ball.
21:42Without it, they can't unload the catch.
21:45All right, I'll take this piece.
21:46The pole gets hooked up in the bottom and it doesn't take much to break one of those.
21:50That's the weight of the boat.
21:52We need a ceiling.
21:53Yep.
21:55We have a spare yet, so she put a spare on.
21:58But the spare is an old one, so she's worn out pretty good.
22:03Can't take it all or all of them like that.
22:05Yeah.
22:06Just shackle it for now.
22:30Got it repaired and back up and running again.
22:35Yeah.
22:38But now we're on our spare, so we're going to have to do what we got to do with what
22:43we got.
22:44Never give up.
22:45Woo-hoo!
22:50Okay, get that one ready.
22:51Yep.
22:54In the waters off the Magdalene Islands...
22:57That one look all right, or?
22:58Yeah.
22:59...fishermen haul in their first catches of crab.
23:02Now you've got to grab that trap and set it right on the table.
23:05...while waiting for news of the price they'll fetch on the market.
23:10Price is looking really good.
23:18Uh, I just got a text saying that the price is $7.25.
23:23A good price that could offset the drop in quota.
23:27Woo-hoo-hoo!
23:28Good so far, yeah?
23:30First spot's looking really good.
23:32And so far, the traps around the Maggies are exceeding expectations.
23:36We're getting some nice crab there now, boys.
23:39Fill that all up with blue crab.
23:41That'd be crab tack dealer.
23:42Two more traps, and we'll be able to create like swimming in crab.
23:46Oh, yeah.
23:48Good.
23:49Coming up.
23:53Not much.
23:55160 kilometers north, off the shores of Anticosti Island.
23:59Yeah.
24:00It's another story.
24:02Captain Adam has had a morning to forget.
24:05Not much.
24:06That wasn't very good.
24:08Well, yeah.
24:09It can't be a repeat of last year.
24:11You know, just can't.
24:12Last crab season.
24:14Wow.
24:15Oh, my fucking god.
24:18Adam kept getting skunked.
24:19A little bit.
24:20All of them, yeah.
24:21No matter how many times he moved his traps.
24:24Start lighting your buoy up.
24:25We have to account for all the running around with these traps, too.
24:28After weeks of burning fuel.
24:30Woo-hoo!
24:31He finally got on the crab.
24:33Yes.
24:34With catches so good, he had to throw back full traps once he reached his quota.
24:41Uh, you there, Adam?
24:43Yeah, I got you there, Russell.
24:44Yep.
24:45Yeah, how's things going there for you?
24:47Adam gets a call from Russell, a seasoned crab fisherman from the islands.
24:52Some place is not so, not so good.
24:55Okay, well, some there, bud.
24:57The vet offers some strategy on finding the good crab patches faster.
25:04So, told me, he said, if you got a bad trap here, you know, the next few is going to
25:08be bad.
25:08But down the line, you're going to maybe hook into a few.
25:11So, skip to find out where they're at.
25:14Russell knows the zone well.
25:16His son, Captain Steven, sold Adam the crab license just three years ago.
25:21I had an opportunity to buy another license around the Maggie's here, closer.
25:26And then Adam's like, I'd be interested in yours.
25:29Russell says jump up six or eight traps.
25:32Until you find good on your strings, like, okay.
25:35With only two seasons of crab behind him, Adam takes the veteran's advice to heart.
25:40I like getting advice from the older fellas, you know, that have done it for a long time.
25:45He jumps half a mile down the line, hoping his luck changes.
25:51Trap.
25:56It's about the same as the last one, I think.
25:58No bass.
26:01It's still not here.
26:03I'm going to jump further up again.
26:07Where's the crab boy?
26:08Where's the crab?
26:19Oh, this is the first fishing trip.
26:21I was a little, a little anxious last night.
26:24Didn't sleep like a baby.
26:26Just thinking about it.
26:28To the south, Adam's younger brother, Kevin, is key to fish his first traps.
26:33Pretty excited about it, you know, can't wait to pull one up and see what's in it, really.
26:38Good payday is what I need, what I need for, for what I'm into here.
26:44Okay, here we go.
26:47First buoy here and see what's in it.
26:57Yeah, so hauling the traps up.
26:59You know, the hauler's kind of spinning it freely, really.
27:02Sounds heavy.
27:06And when she comes back up, you can hear the hydraulics just grunt like.
27:11You can tell that the trap's heavy.
27:14Good?
27:15Yep.
27:16Good, sir.
27:19It's all good.
27:21It's a promising start for the 60 traps they have to fish today.
27:25Ready to go.
27:26Ready.
27:32My uncle, you know, when it breaches, he's like, oh, it's going to be a heavy one.
27:36Hey.
27:38Did I call these, yeah?
27:39Good.
27:40That's a nice one.
27:41Full table.
27:42Full.
27:43Oh, wow.
27:44Happy with that?
27:45Yep.
27:46It don't take a lot to satisfy me.
27:4916 basket.
27:5016.
27:51Okay, there's a buoy right here.
27:53Yep.
27:54Oh.
27:55Oh, nice crab pot.
27:58Everyone's happy.
27:59Everyone's like, wow.
28:00Yep.
28:01You know, great feeling.
28:03Hey, bull.
28:04The rookie is knee deep in crab, stuffing the catch into the hole to make room on deck.
28:13That's good.
28:14That one's good, sir.
28:15Yep, really good.
28:17Yeah, they're looking for you, all right?
28:20All right.
28:21Just as Kevin prepares to reposition their 20-second trap.
28:29What?
28:35The hydraulic shaft that controls the boom starts acting up.
28:46They try lubricating the cylinder.
28:57It's a sound that could shut down fishing for the day.
29:06Or the season.
29:08First day, you know.
29:10Hear this thing moan and groan.
29:13Not a good feeling.
29:15What's up with the holler?
29:17I don't know, but I don't like it.
29:19Something's wrong internally or I don't know.
29:22Don't sound good and I don't like it.
29:38Ooh, this one's nice.
29:42It's only April on the Magdalene Islands, but Nancy Clark is busy getting her mom's pottery shop ready for summer.
29:50Super cute.
29:52It's go, go, go. Tourist season's coming. It's around the corner.
29:56Crab season is starting at the same time and then the whole village kind of changes at once.
30:02Both of Nancy's brothers, Adam and Kevin, are fishing crab this season.
30:07You're always wondering how they're doing, where they're at.
30:10I texted Kevin earlier, but I still got no news.
30:14Kevin's weighing on his sister's mind today, fishing crab in the captain's seat for the first time.
30:20Kind of his first year doing things completely by himself.
30:25He's been waiting for a while.
30:27Hope it's going well.
30:29Should be.
30:30I think he's ready.
30:40Far from shore on LeBioc, Kevin's first crab season as captain has ground to a halt.
30:48Don't sound good and I don't like it.
30:51The hydraulic cylinder powering the hauler is failing.
30:56It's not leaking yet anyway.
30:58No, no.
31:00So this hydraulic cylinder is filled with oil.
31:03And, you know, if that start leaking or bust, it would have a mess.
31:08I'm scared to bust over my crab.
31:10Right.
31:11If the seal blows, hydraulic fluid will spray across the deck and contaminate the crab.
31:18What is that?
31:20It's going to spoil any crab I have on deck or on my table.
31:24You know, there's nothing to do with that crab.
31:25You can't clean it.
31:26It could be thousands of dollars.
31:31The worst thing will be on an island.
31:33Something breaks down.
31:34Sometimes you can't get a replacement.
31:37Waiting for another cylinder could keep LeBioc tied to the docks for weeks.
31:43If you can't get to them for a week, you don't know if you're on the crab or off the
31:47crab.
31:47They move so quick.
31:48So, you know, if you're not fishing them every day, it's hard to stay on top of that stuff.
31:53I'm just going to fish half a dozen to see.
31:57The rookie captain decides to keep going.
32:03Hoping his failing machine holds together long enough to fill the boat.
32:07Still good.
32:09Yeah, they're looking pretty good.
32:10You know, if I'm pulling up traps, 400 pounds of trap right now, it's a lot of money.
32:19I think the decision I'm going to take is, you know, try and go easy with the cylinder.
32:25Keep going until something breaks.
32:28As long as it don't piss oil over the crab, that would be a disaster.
32:34Hopefully it works for the day.
32:35I hope.
32:36I do hope.
32:44Let it go.
32:45Don't wait too long.
32:46Let it go, let it go.
32:50Fishing is good, but we got to get them shuck out faster.
32:53This is still here because of the tide.
32:56It's pushing us back where we started this morning.
32:58Let's go, boys.
32:59Let's go.
33:00We're going to look at the weather.
33:03Wow, we got some wind coming this afternoon.
33:06The moon ship crew has three hours left to fish before the winds are forecast to hit.
33:12We got to hurry up.
33:13Let's go, boys!
33:15Move those heads!
33:17As long as the fishing is good, try to stay here as long as we can.
33:20No breaks here, boys.
33:22We got to go quick.
33:23Don't fuck this up, boys.
33:25Come on.
33:29I'm going to try another one deeper.
33:32Off the northern shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
33:36Where's the buoy?
33:37Adam Clark is skipping miles down his trap line, hoping to find any sign of crab life.
33:43You guys see that in there?
33:45She'll be coming up on it here.
33:49There it is up here.
33:51This is deeper.
33:55Watch your head there, Nick.
33:58He's jumped to one of his deepest pots, over 120 meters down on the ocean floor.
34:05Down, Tubby.
34:07There it is.
34:10Whoa!
34:13It's starting to get good.
34:17When someone yells good pot or good trapping at it, you know, it couldn't make me happier.
34:22Oh, nice crab.
34:24Oh, look at the color.
34:26This is where the crabs start.
34:28Oh, yes, sir.
34:29One good pot may be luck.
34:32He needs to see a pattern to confirm he's on the crab.
34:36All right, let's get these fish.
34:37Go.
34:39Are you ready?
34:41Oh, yes.
34:42Crab.
34:44Either here this year.
34:46Last year they weren't here.
34:48Very good.
34:49Nice crab.
34:50Oh, they are really nice crab.
34:52Yes, sir.
34:54Feels good for this one because last year there wasn't a crab in this area.
34:58There's something, man.
35:00Yeah.
35:01The captain's found the hotspot much quicker than years before.
35:05Each year should get easier with the experience, knowing where they're at, at what time, and new places to try.
35:11Well, that's why I say they're here, just you've got to get on the right depth.
35:15Woo!
35:20Pretty good average around this area.
35:23Crab goes in cycles, right?
35:25So, this one here is just starting to go up on the cycle again.
35:30Oh, there we go.
35:33Oh, yeah.
35:34That's a good one.
35:36And you're like, yes.
35:37It's like winning the lottery, really.
35:39Oh, my God.
35:42There we go.
35:45There we go.
35:46Woo-hoo!
35:51By late afternoon, there are just 20 traps left to fish.
35:55Cold guard, we do control.
35:5627.
35:5727, over.
35:58Roger.
35:5827.
35:59But the weather window has slammed shut.
36:02A violent gale is on its way.
36:04And the Miss Sophia Daisy is still hours from safety.
36:08Yeah.
36:09It's either we're going to beat the wind or the wind's going to beat us.
36:11One of the two.
36:13Yeah, I wouldn't really go to put anyone on danger.
36:15I just got to make a wise, safe decision.
36:18I'm not looking very good.
36:20No joy.
36:21The incoming storm is cutting the first trip of the season short.
36:26Good?
36:26Okay.
36:27But at least the captain has found the crab.
36:30Home.
36:31We'll be home in five hours.
36:38I'm going to keep looking at the weather and figure it out over the next hour.
36:43Back south, the moon ship is racing the clock with a storm forecast to sweep in.
36:49It wouldn't hurt if we're going to take a half day off and get ready for the morning.
36:52Yeah.
36:53It sounds like giving up.
36:56I know.
36:58Jacob doesn't like that I'm giving up.
37:02It doesn't sound like a moon ship crew, like, you know, giving up here.
37:07Heading home early means losing out on thousands of dollars.
37:11When you're on the scallops, nobody wants to go in.
37:14Everyone's got money to make there, so.
37:16But the risk is real.
37:18Wings could reach 37 knots.
37:21Gale force.
37:23I don't know.
37:2437 is a lot.
37:27It takes a lot of wind to stop fishing.
37:29We'll fish in some rough weather just the same if we know that there's something worthwhile
37:33going for, you know?
37:39Oh, fuck.
37:45Dumping pole is fucking on that one, too.
37:48Now, a second dumping pole is failing.
37:51Oh, something's out there now.
37:54Holy fuck.
37:55We got some work to do.
37:57One crazy day.
37:59They're getting wore out.
38:00They're a couple of years old.
38:02Probably going to have to just cut a new tree.
38:05Lower it.
38:07From here on, the crew will have to manually lift and dump one of the six steel drags on its
38:12own.
38:13Cool, boy.
38:16It costs time.
38:17Oh, man.
38:19It's just a pain in the air.
38:20It's just one more thing.
38:22Get this shot.
38:24It sucks, but when the catches are up, you gotta stay focused.
38:28Let's go, boys.
38:29Beautiful.
38:31What's that floating over there?
38:35Oh, fuck.
38:37I just did that again.
38:39The captain made a critical error.
38:41Too much is going on there.
38:43Yeah.
38:43He left the winch running blind, jamming the cable gear into the block.
38:48Can't believe I almost pulled that through again.
38:50We actually broke it last year.
38:52Like, it's a real stupid dangerous mistake.
38:55That thing's got so much power.
38:57Thank God it didn't break, anyway.
38:59Yeah.
39:00Yeah.
39:01With the gear and weather holding up for now, the crew plans to power through the rest of their day.
39:06Holy shit.
39:07Holy shit.
39:10Yeah.
39:11Oh, fuck.
39:13Wait up.
39:15Got it.
39:19Holy shit.
39:21For fuck's sake.
39:22Yeah, I just moved a basket and sure enough, the gallus was all like that.
39:28What's that floating over there?
39:30While everyone's attention was drawn port-side, the winch pulled the tower forward, buckling the base.
39:39Oh, man.
39:41That makes me really want to go home now.
39:51Tough fall there.
39:53Just kind of fishing.
39:55Hard to leave it.
39:56It's all on me in the end.
40:01Hey.
40:02I think we're done.
40:03Yeah.
40:04That double ball to me was a sign.
40:06I know.
40:07It's not worth canceling it, because they're going to still be here when we come back.
40:13Yeah.
40:14It's vigorous, man.
40:17The moonship crew are throwing in the towel.
40:20We had a few things go wrong there.
40:22A couple of our poles broke.
40:25A couple of other problems.
40:27The weather is also behind Captain Williams' decision.
40:30The wind is already picking up.
40:33We get that swell.
40:34You lose every time when there's swell.
40:36Like, the boat's moving so much.
40:38Jerking everything around.
40:41Cutting the trip short when catches are high is tough.
40:44But a good captain knows when to call it quits.
40:49If I think it's time to go in, it's time to go in.
40:53Never give up unless it's for safety.
40:56As they head for home, there's one thing that helps dull the bitter taste of disappointment.
41:01Need more butter.
41:07We don't want to be stuck when there's sea crashing.
41:12We risk it somewhat, but at the end of the day, you always pick the safest call just the same.
41:19Honey, I'm home.
41:21Whoo!
41:34Miles, you filled another basket, did ya?
41:36Yeah.
41:37All right.
41:39As the day winds down on the Maggie's, one last captain returns to harbor.
41:44Ah, this is foodie.
41:47Bacon?
41:48I think I'm a little strong, folks.
41:51Kevin's gamble to keep fishing with a faulty boom has delivered a massive payday.
41:57Yeah, that's pretty good.
41:58I'll meet my goal, I think.
42:01We're gonna do not too bad, I guess.
42:02In a single trip, the new captain has smashed expectations, landing 50% of his entire season's quota.
42:11You know, part of being the captain is making your own call, and I took a chance on getting through
42:18the day with a cylinder.
42:20And I did.
42:21The cylinder never busted over my cramp, so good call to make.
42:26Coming back with over 17,000 pounds out of 60 traps, so one trip and, you know, halfway there.
42:35Overall, it's been a good first day.
42:37You know, the love of seeing what you catch.
42:40Just to, you know, prove to yourself that you're doing it.
42:45You know, doing what your family done for years.
42:47You know, it's a very good feeling.
42:50You know, I think.
43:00You know, like.
