From Farmer’s Son to Fashion Legend_ Giorgio Armani’s Early Journey
Transcript
00:00The Armani story began in 1934 when Giorgio Armani was born in the small northern Italian
00:06village of Piazzemza. He was the only child of a family of farmers. His father wanted him to
00:13follow in his footsteps, but from an early age, the young man showed an interest in fashion and
00:19clothing. After graduating from high school, he moved to Milan to study literature and philosophy.
00:25However, he soon abandoned his studies to pursue a career in fashion. His first job was as a window
00:33dresser for a department store, where he quickly rose to become head of the men's clothing department.
00:39During the next decade, he worked for several other companies, including two famous Italian fashion
00:45houses, Nino Cerruti and Giovanni Battista. While at Cerruti, Armani met Sergio Galeotti,
00:53who had become his partner and the creative force behind the brand. Together, they designed men's
01:00and women's wear collections for the company. In 1974, Armani was appointed as the head designer
01:07of menswear at Italian fashion house Coronet. It was here that he gained recognition for his designs.
01:14A year later, after working for Coronet for a total of five years, Armani decided to leave and start his
01:21own business with Golotti. At first, they had difficulties finding manufacturers willing to
01:27take on the project because the production costs were higher than the industry average.
01:32Eventually, they found a manufacturer in northeastern Italy who agreed to produce a small collection of
01:39500 pieces. On July 25, 1975, the brand was officially registered. Armani's first fashion show took place in
01:48October of that same year.
