Miami Dolphins legend Kim Bokamper explains why he already senses a change in direction under the new Miami Dolphins regime. Plus, why he thinks the Achane contract was the right move.
Transcript
00:00and spoken to him in a while but kind of get the percolating feeling of football season again with
00:06the schedule release and excited he's coming out with us long time miami dolphin he's on the
00:11dolphins walk of fame been part of the dolphins tv coverage on cbs four for years long time friend
00:18of the program hello bo hey how you doing hawk i you know it's uh it was it was it's
00:23been a long
00:24time and uh it was really nice to hear jimmy's face or jimmy's uh voice when he when he picked
00:29up the phone i always look forward to a little i always look forward to a little jimmy time
00:36he's a talker um so the dolphin schedule on paper very difficult but is this coming season is it
00:47about wins and losses or is it about this new regime and them putting their stamp on what
00:53dolphins football is and will be yeah i i think that's the case i like you know everyone's you
01:01know everyone you know is asking you i go look i i don't care how many games they win this
01:06year
01:07the only thing i don't want them to go i want i don't want to have an offer but um
01:11you know but
01:12but it's about it's about you know i mean you know all the all the stuff that's gone on over
01:19the last four or five years and you know the the the 10 years with chris greer that you know
01:25would
01:26draft players and then uh instead of developing them and then let them go with the team after two
01:32years i don't like this guy and so we're not gonna so so it's to me it's it's it's the
01:37new regime
01:38um and i think they i think they believe in i think they believe in growing from the draft
01:45homegrown develop and keep um and so what i'm looking for is a little bit of that and i'm just
01:53looking for a football team that that goes out and plays and plays hard and whether they're whether
02:00they're down by you know 14 or whether they're down by three or whether they're ahead i mean just
02:06just plays i want to see you know i i you're tired of seeing guys that um that should be
02:11playing
02:11stand on the sidelines and uh and all the stuff that went on with with you know um mike mcdaniel
02:18and his so-called teammates um i'm a little tired of that very tired of that but i think this
02:25comes
02:25i think this comes back to more of a you know you know these guys come from the black and
02:32blue division
02:32right and and and and they're both they're both sons of coaches they're football guys from the time
02:41they were in the crib and um so i think we're going to see more of that middle old school
02:46traditional
02:47you know hard work hard practices you know expect expectations being you know you like your
02:55expectations to always be um higher than your you're you know higher than uh your guys are
03:02playing at and and trying to get get them to to keep reaching and so that's what i'm looking for
03:07about a football team just give me some good football just give me some basic stuff be tough
03:12and uh and play the last whistle you know and to that point bo like with halfley and sully so
03:19let's
03:19go sully first he's he's working with 150 million dollar dead money so he's he's working on half
03:26the he's working on 50 cents on the dollar with the other gms and then halfley how can we really
03:31evaluate him if it is a 4 and 13 season because the record says 4 and 13 but to your
03:36point i know
03:37how they're drafting they're getting bigger i think they're gonna they want to be a physical team
03:41but can we really evaluate them on this season well i i don't think so again i don't the wins
03:48and
03:48losses i don't think that's the evaluation now so so they basically cleared out all the deadwood
03:55right you know all the you know all the all the malcontents all the guys that you know were you
04:02know look you lose you lose a guy like waddle waddle was great and and but but he just became
04:07you know
04:07put some shrapnel in in what's going on but you had the james james daniels guys and the this guy
04:13into that guy and that you know you you guys for good guys for two years over pam and you
04:19don't
04:19get any value out of them now you got a lot of young 13 draft choices this year you know
04:24and then
04:24they're and and they've got they've got i think they've got right now 40 some odd players on one
04:30year contracts so so this is a you know this is a at this point if i'm if i'm uh
04:37sullivan i would want to
04:39see um my two-year draft of two years ago be better than they've been uh especially chop robinson
04:48right he needs to he needs to play better and then i want to see the draft that you had
04:53last year with
04:55kenneth grant um you had phillips biggins it's savayanaya i want to see those guys be the type of
05:04players that you expected them to be when they were drafted and then add this draft where proctor
05:12and uh you know and johnson all these guys that you drafted the you that that seem to be solid
05:19guys
05:20see them play up to a level that uh that's going to tell you that this is not going to
05:26be a
05:27five-year turnaround or a five-year rebuilding it may be a a two-year uh you know i would
05:35expect this
05:36team to play much much better next year than this year if if if they instill the basics the fundamentals
05:47and the desire to be a good football team that it has to come from those players and that's the
05:52message
05:53that i think that um uh that halfley has to to instill in that football team going back bo to
06:00how the dolphins have to finish out games this year and and like you said just just play tough football
06:06how important will these two games that stand out to me on the schedule at buffalo november 22nd and
06:13then at lambeau field against the packers december 20th aside from the ties that halfley and sully have
06:19just the idea that this team could never play in cold weather they'll get that opportunity later
06:24in the season to just go prove look maybe they can't compete with those teams because of the
06:28talent this season like you mentioned but that they can still compete in cold weather and kind of
06:33shake off the narrative that they're soft when it comes to playing in that type of climate
06:38well so that's that's one of the other things with with halfley and sullivan that uh that i that i
06:44like
06:44they've been in green bay they they know what green bay is like when to play especially in the winter
06:51um and and if they they if they can bring out you know an iota of something to deliver to
06:58this team
06:59that could make them have some some way that they can figure out to um give them a notion of
07:07how to play
07:07better football in that kind of weather since they've been in it you know as much as any as much
07:13as
07:13any football team has been over the last including the buffalo bills um you know i i think there's
07:19you know there's not much you can do i mean but but if if they can have some some insight
07:25in how to
07:26get those guys ready to be able to play in in the game i think in a cold game so
07:33last last year in green
07:34bay if you remember that game um it was it wasn't it wasn't overly cold it was cold it wasn't
07:42bitter
07:43um and that team played all right but the tackling was horrendous so you know if they can figure out
07:51with these guys get these guys in here and and figure out how to get that defense to tackle better
07:56in the cold weather and look i don't i don't know look i come from california and i've been in
08:00florida
08:01for the rest of my life you know don't don't ask me about how to play in cold weather but
08:05if they
08:05but they've played in a lot and if they can impart a little knowledge you know a little knowledge is
08:10better than none right yeah this show thrives on little knowledge i was about to say there's not
08:17much knowledge coming from my side bo i'm speaking of so on speaking of solana i guess right
08:25he's he's he's of unknowledge i i hate to do it but i had to get a little shot in
08:31solana
08:32not in a in a cruel fashion but just in a it's just because i like him you know you
08:36give him a
08:36little dig just yeah yeah really on the radar yeah i really miss you too bo
08:43hey hey bo were you surprised that they made devon a chan a top five paid running back in the
08:49nfl
08:49field no i'm not i'm not i mean that guy's delivered since he's been here um you know you
08:57you know what you know how you know he's like as a running uh when he with the run game
09:02uh he catches
09:03the ball and then he delivers after the catch uh he's got the speed thing and and he's a guy
09:09i've
09:09seen on the sidelines where he's you know he's been dinged up sometimes and um and you know the
09:15trainers come over he'll just push him away and go play so he's a tough guy uh he's given us
09:19all
09:20you can need i think he's you know so he's now he's the he's the third highest paid running back
09:24in the league between barkley um uh look uh christian christian um mccaffrey and so it's so then it's uh
09:33it's devon so i i think it's well deserved and it's you know so it does another thing too so
09:38you go
09:39back to go back to andrew van ginkel go back to christian wilkins go back to javon holland uh go
09:47back to those guys that you know the dolphins drafted drafted high and in two years you knew
09:53they weren't going to resign them and so they kind of let them hang out there and hang out there
09:57and by signing devon now i think it sends a message to everybody on that team that hey if you
10:04play well
10:05uh and you get to that point they're not going to push you to the you know to your last
10:09the last
10:10year your contract and and get into a haggling situation they're going to take care of you um
10:15and i think that's what they did for for devon and look right now he's the best player you have
10:20on your football team so you so you might as well pam we know uh famously what your dolphins teams
10:26were
10:27like and who the head coach was and then you watched mike mcdaniel coach the team the last four
10:33seasons and now you've been around jeff halfley as he's putting his imprint on the team do you notice
10:39this early on a visible difference come on come on come on come on you know you're throwing the bait
10:49out on me do you sense a complete 180 from how this team will be approached by the head coach
10:59i do i do no doubt i don't see i don't see jeff halfley you know calling somebody a teammate
11:06when
11:06he when he sprains an ankle um i don't see him saying saying well you know we we have guys
11:13that
11:13come in late and i find them but you know there's nothing else i can do they keep coming late
11:19you know
11:19i don't i don't see that coming out of these guys um you know mike was a different guy you
11:25know and
11:25it's funny for all this um it's funny too so he's with he's in san diego with adam gaze that
11:32that should be an interesting um coaching coaching uh situation there but um you know for all
11:39the conversations between them two that's a weird conversation about what they want to do on third down
11:45boat but so for all this bluster about him being an offensive genius right this guy that's got you
11:52the new you know he's a you know creates these new things it's it's it's odd how over the last
11:59two
11:59seasons i think the number was somewhere between 50 and 60 passes were completed behind the line of
12:09scrimmage in the second half of the season you know that's not you know that's not the that's not
12:15the offense that they bargained for so i don't think he delivered there and i really don't think he
12:20delivered i don't think he delivered as a leader of men which has become a little bit of a little
12:24bit of a cliche yeah nah but it was visible i think everybody kind of realized that towards the end
12:29yeah and but something we talked about where so look sometimes the guy would talk i gotta i get
12:34to tell you sometimes you know sometimes sometimes i would you know i'd be in a in the in the
12:40post
12:41game locker room and uh and listen to him talk and i'm like five minutes in my god i don't
12:45even know what
12:46he's saying we would play the sound and we'd go what the hell is this guy talking about i'm telling
12:51you i never saw someone more at a loss for words and just muscling through stuff than watching cbs4
13:00after the games last season when you're looking for anyone to talk to in the locker room and it was
13:06just like another it was another shellacking or another embarrassment you're just trying to muscle
13:11through man hey where did they filibuster at on the senate floor yeah it seemed like he was
13:17filibustering post game like what are you talking about yeah you know what i you know we're in tampa
13:22we're in tampa two years ago uh for joint practices and sal palantonio is there and and and before
13:29practice sal came up he says hey i gotta i gotta interview mike uh after um after practice i said
13:36what
13:36can you tell me about him i said well i can tell you this i said it's like walking up
13:41on a bush
13:42and poking your arms in there and spreading all the limbs around and seeing an acre an acorn grabbing
13:48it off the bush and then all the all the bushes are going to collapse on you and you're going
13:52to end
13:52with just one acorn out of that whole little bush
13:58i saw sal afterwards i said uh i said how'd it go it was just like you said
14:05hey speaking of tampa bow you know my son just graduated university of tampa but for four years
14:12you told me to go eat a sandwich at wrights and it took us four years but my wife and
14:18i and son finally
14:19got to wrights and it absolutely delivered that was an excellent recommendation and my wife is angry
14:25that i didn't let her go there before what was this is the beef the beef champagne or the beef
14:32uh yeah
14:32some some big giant like you know a bow side hey speaking of food bow we've had this conversation on
14:38the show and and crowder texted me that he i'm not going to tell you which side we're all on
14:43do you eat in the bed
14:48no of course not of course not no no absolutely not absolutely not well you wanna you know some
14:57leftovers go watch some tv he's a restaurateur first of all he knows where food belongs no no chan
15:03chan that's disgusting yes disgusting right what are you gonna roll and get it in in a
15:11you'll roll over and a frito's gonna go up your ass what i mean
15:16i eat neat but you know you want a grilled cheese sandwich maybe five blow pops and two you know
15:22popsicles at 1 a.m you gotta sit in the bed and watch netflix with that can you imagine no
15:27no no
15:29i'm glad bo cleared that up because i think crowder will stop arguing this the only way the only way
15:34i
15:34would do that if i had one of those like uh like those beds like the hospital beds where you
15:39can you
15:40get yourself right and and do that but uh and maybe even then you wouldn't feel good about it
15:45i think that's the only time i've ever eaten in a bed was when i was in a hospital bed
15:50right and
15:51and couldn't get up right yeah yeah last night i had a mikado salad and chicken wings right in the
15:59he will literally go to the kitchen cook something at night and then purposefully bring it back to his bed
16:07well look i've done that i've got up and i've cooked stuff but i sit out in the living room
16:12and right you know like a man i said and she's like a man right like a man what is
16:18your what
16:18mortgage your wife what does mama say about that she well we just celebrate our 15th wedding
16:25anniversary so she just kind of deals with it i believe both it is what it is not the only
16:31thing
16:31i'm sure that's not the only thing she deals with channy and my personality
16:37and everything else pretty much the entire package she actually describes him as mike mcdaniel you get
16:44the one little acorn but everything else falls apart out of the whole bush she got one acorn
16:53we'll see you this is why i don't have bow on too often we end up getting in trouble by
16:57the end
16:58and by the end we've got fritos going up our asses i don't know what's happening
17:03we'll see you bo all right take care
