Is Cade Cunningham about to put the Pistons on his back?

00:00Duck Hunter, Scott Anderson, 97.1, open lines, 2, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
00:05Okay, so here we go.
00:07It is game six tonight at Cleveland, Detroit down 3-2.
00:13Everybody knows the situation.
00:15Pistons need to win until the season's over.
00:17I'm going to take you back, Scott, a number of years, and a meme came out.
00:24And the meme was a picture of Justin Verlander that said,
00:31everybody calm the F down, I got this.
00:36Is it time we have a Cade Cunningham meme?
00:39Everybody calm the F down, I got this.
00:42Because the last time the Pistons got backed into an elimination game in a series
00:48when they lost game four to Orlando, their first elimination game,
00:53what happened?
00:56Cade went out and had a...
00:57Was it the 45-point night?
00:59He went out and had a legacy game.
01:02Staring down elimination, he went off for 45 points.
01:06And obviously it was good the rest of the series,
01:09but that got him going, and they came back from 3-1 down.
01:14These are legacy games, games like tonight.
01:19And there's going to be other opportunities in this league,
01:23but if you're a superstar, if you become a superstar,
01:28your superstar resume gets filled with moments where you do stuff like this.
01:36Where you go out and you have a massive, massive game.
01:41It's the kind of opportunity where Cade's legacy can grow.
01:45So he's Detroit's best player.
01:46He's blossoming into a star.
01:49You know, the 45-point in the elimination game against Orlando sparked a comeback.
01:54The first of three elimination games.
01:57Yep.
01:57And now in the next round, the stakes are higher, right?
02:00I mean, it's a better opponent.
02:01You're closer to the NBA Finals.
02:04So this game has Cade.
02:06Everybody calm the F down.
02:08I got this legacy kind of written all over it.
02:10In my opinion.
02:11Well, I mean, in order to have that legacy game, you clearly have to win the game.
02:16Because as I recall, Paolo Bencaro had 45 points also, and his team lost.
02:21They weren't backed into the corner.
02:22No.
02:23And, you know, Cade had 39 points the other night, and the Pistons lost.
02:27So obviously you have to win the game, and you're saying it's got to be an elimination game
02:31in order to establish that legacy.
02:32I mean, it doesn't have to be.
02:33I think it just increases the stakes.
02:35Like, there's all kinds of opportunities in one's career.
02:38And this is one of them.
02:39I'm just pointing out, sometimes somebody can play out of their mind, and they still
02:42lose.
02:42Yep.
02:43Sure.
02:43Which sucks.
02:45For tonight, I mean, I put a question in my show sheet for today.
02:49It's who's going to step up aside from Cade?
02:52Because I'm assuming Cade is.
02:54I don't think we're going to get Cade from, was it game four where he had the 19 points?
02:58Which was well below average for him, and he had a horrible shooting night.
03:01Can't have that.
03:02I'm just assuming we're going to get a good version of Cade, hopefully somewhere close to 30 points,
03:07and somebody else is helping to carry the load.
03:10Several of the players are helping to carry the load.
03:13Because that's how they're going to beat Cleveland.
03:15It's not going to be done because you've got one Herculean performance.
03:19No.
03:19I mean, look, it's...
03:20But he has to be the guy.
03:22He's got to be the best player the Pistons have on the floor.
03:25And then they need others to step up to, for sure.
03:28But if the Pistons are to stave off elimination tonight and force game seven, it'll have to
03:36be because Cade, first and foremost, is the man.
03:39It feels like it's almost a requirement.
03:41It's hard to imagine a path to victory without Cade having a great game.
03:45As well as they played without Cade during a final stretch of the regular season when
03:50he was out with the collapsed lung.
03:53As well as they played without him, those aren't playoff games, right?
03:58Those are end-of-the-season games.
03:59Teams are tanking.
04:00Teams are doing whatever and feeling themselves out.
04:03I'm not taking a ton of credit away from the Pistons for winning those games because
04:06they did win those games without their best player.
04:09But it's different when you're matched up in a playoff game against a really good opponent
04:13who's not dealing with injuries, who clearly is not going to do load management,
04:17and does not have their eyes set, their sights set on the upcoming draft.
04:23So it's a whole different thing.
04:25So yes, I do expect Cade is going to be the man tonight.
04:28Other people have to step up.
04:29We asked a question on Twitter, and you can go answer, and we'll read some of these on
04:33the air.
04:35Does this series get back to Detroit?
04:37Yes or no?
04:38If so, how?
04:39If not, why not?
04:44From EdomupDSP, Tobias doesn't go one for seven from Thichard.
04:47Three, that's how.
04:49Red Ranger says, unfortunately, no.
04:51Tobias has regressed to his normal self, and JB will start Jalen Duren, which will be
04:55a huge mistake.
04:56I actually expect him to start Jalen Duren.
04:59I'm not sure Jalen Duren lasts long, though.
05:02I don't know if I expect him to start Jalen Duren.
05:04I expect him to.
05:05I thought about this coming in.
05:06If I had to bet, I'd bet he starts him.
05:08It would not be shocking.
05:10I wouldn't bet a lot.
05:12I don't think the odds are great, but it would be way against me.
05:16But it wouldn't be shocking if he didn't start him.
05:20Kang, do you expect Duren to start tonight?
05:22Yeah, absolutely.
05:23Okay.
05:24I would be floored, honestly, if they benched Jalen Duren to start this game.
05:29Now, he may get benched during the game.
05:31Yeah.
05:31I mean, like, you know how he didn't play the fourth quarter last game, but yeah, they're
05:35going to start him, and they're just going to roll and see how it goes.
05:37Because, honestly, as much as he has not been there this playoffs, if for some reason, you
05:43know, whatever is mentally blocking him opens, that's a serious changer.
05:48You know?
05:49Like, we know he has the capability of doing it.
05:51Is this, like, or is this something that's just going to, he's going to need an offseason
05:55to open it back up?
05:56We can't wait that long, of course, but I think he starts.
05:58248-539-9797.
06:01Let's get to your phone calls.
06:02Mark is in Detroit, and he's on 97.1.
06:04What's up, Mark?
06:05Hey, how you doing?
06:07I think you start Durham, and people are bashing this kid, and I understand he hasn't played.
06:13I'm shocked, because he has way more muscle than Allen, and they got to try to get him
06:19going still.
06:21But if he gets going, he could be the difference in this series.
06:25But I think if the Pistons could win, I agree with Kay Cunham, if they can't go on the road
06:31and win a game, then they don't need to be there no way.
06:34All the games have been close.
06:36Okay.
06:37Of course, I thought that was a trip on Thompson, but that's not the reason why they lost the
06:41game.
06:41They were up nine points with two minutes to go.
06:44They get two baskets.
06:46They couldn't close it out.
06:48But Cleveland is going to be an okay walk.
06:52All the games are close.
06:53But they need to get off to a good start.
06:56If they win tonight, the series is over.
06:58The Pistons, it's going to be the Pistons in seven games.
07:00If they win tonight, the Pistons win this series.
07:04Well, look, I mean, as pretty as Cleveland is sitting right now, Detroit could flip the
07:09table and have home court for an elimination game.
07:12And there's a reason why Detroit felt like an authentic Eastern Conference championship
07:18team.
07:19And it's a reason why they were the one seed.
07:21A big reason why was Jalen Duren.
07:24And, you know, he's still on the roster.
07:27What feels like the player that got him here hasn't been showing up.
07:33Right.
07:34And they've still been in all the games.
07:36So, if he gets going, he could be the difference.
07:39Of course.
07:39He could be the difference in the two games.
07:41Yeah, but it's been the biggest if.
07:43They need to get him going early.
07:45I mean, they played 12 games so far in the playoffs.
07:51And in the 12 games, we've been saying if for 11 of the 12.
07:55He had one game where he went 15 and 15.
07:57Otherwise, it's been a real struggle for him.
07:59And in this series, the troublesome part is that Pistons did a really good job in the
08:05first couple games of limiting their front court.
08:07Well, now, those guys are starting to play.
08:11Mobley and Allen are starting to assert themselves.
08:13You know, I think Allen has, he's actually scored pretty well in four of the five games.
08:20And Mobley's starting to feel it, too, in his last couple games.
08:24And that speaks as much on the defensive side for Duren as it does his, we know his lack
08:30of offenses.
08:31But if those guys are starting to rise up and play well against him, he's got to, if he's
08:37going to be in the starting lineup, Doug, I'm telling him, you have got to stop those
08:41guys.
08:41I'm kind of, that's what I need you to do out there, because I'm reticent to the fact
08:44that you're not going to get back to 20 and 15, but I need you to be, I need you
08:49to be
08:49the guy.
08:49Wait, what you believe, you look in the mirror, did we do this good, did we do that good?
08:53I think that probably you and I, maybe more than most, have been extraordinarily patient
08:58during this, these Jalen Duren struggles.
09:02Understanding why they keep parading him out there is because he makes them the best version
09:09of the Pistons.
09:09He's a great player.
09:11And he hasn't been.
09:12And they keep parading him out there and waiting for him to return to be a great player.
09:16And it's possible that they've waited too long and they've been too patient and maybe we've
09:21been too patient, but the patience has to run out now.
09:25There is no tomorrow.
09:27And if they start Paul Reed, I will be surprised, but not stunned.
09:36Kang will be stunned.
09:37You won't be surprised.
09:39I mean, it's, it's, it's, these are desperate times and that would feel like a desperate measure
09:46and it can be considered a bit of a panic move, but there's a reason to panic.
09:50Like, this is, this is, it's situation critical.
09:55It doesn't get any more critical than this.
09:57Whatever.
09:57If you, if you, if you told me that they just need to hold the ball and let the shot
10:03clock
10:03expire and that would win them the game, do it.
10:06Like I, which might've done it for the last three minutes of the previous game.
10:10If they just had finished the game with four straight shot clock violations, it might've
10:14done it.
10:14Well, they came close to it.
10:15I know they did.
10:16Um, I mean, I think you started it off.
10:18You started going Apollo Creed, trying to inspire Rocky and Rocky three.
10:22Maybe he just needs to, you know, there are no tomorrow.
10:24I can tell you for, as a matter of statement of fact, I remember almost nothing from Rocky
10:29three.
10:30So if I did it, it was organic or it came from some deep hidden recess of my mind that
10:35I did not.
10:36Cause I don't remember anything.
10:37What, which one was Rocky?
10:38It was Rocky three.
10:39It was the one where he went back to the streets.
10:40I, the tiger, he went back and trained in LA with Apollo to get ready for his fight with
10:45Mr. T clubber lane.
10:46Oh, is that right?
10:47Yeah.
10:47And you know, Rocky just wasn't into it.
10:49He was running on the beach and he just really wasn't into like, Hey, I'll come back tomorrow.
10:53And there is no tomorrow.
10:55There is no tomorrow.
10:58Apollo is firing him up.
11:01Jalen Dern has got to get fired up.
11:03He's got to get fired up.
11:05Watch Rocky three this afternoon.
11:07Watch it right now.
11:08I don't know when the shoot around is.
11:11What's that?
11:12I don't know when their shoot around is today, but it was probably this morning.
11:14Well, good.
11:15And now, now it's the time put on.
11:18Let's go watch Rocky three resurrect Carl Weathers.
11:22Yes.
11:24I mean, every character he has is inspiring chubs.
11:28Tap it in.
11:29Tap it in.
11:31What's that?
11:32Happy Gilmore.
11:32You never saw happy Gilmore.
11:34I don't think so.
11:36Is Bob Barker in that?
11:38Yes, he is.
11:39Maybe I saw pieces of it.
11:41Carl Weathers was in that.
11:42He was his golf coach.
11:44Was he?
11:44Yeah.
11:45Chubbs.
11:45Yeah.
11:46Come on, man.
11:47It's just a surprise to you.
11:49No, it's not.
11:49Missing an arm.
11:51Was it a hand?
11:52It was a hand.
11:52It was a whole arm.
11:53It was just a hand.
11:54I think it was like, yeah, like from elbow to.
12:00Tap it in.
12:01Just tap it in.
12:03Tap it in.
