00:14Danny Green, appreciate the time. How are you?
00:17I'm good. How are you guys doing, man? Appreciate you having me on.
00:19Well, we appreciate you coming on.
00:21We've actually been talking a lot in Miami today about LeBron James and his future.
00:25You played with him early in his career and then won a championship with him in L.A.
00:30The future of LeBron with all these rumors of him staying with the Lakers, maybe going to Cleveland,
00:35maybe coming back to Miami, going to Golden State.
00:37I feel like there's a new rumor each day.
00:39What are your thoughts on the matter?
00:42Again, there's a lot of talks.
00:44We don't know. I don't think he knows for sure.
00:46He has an idea, but I think he wants to end up back in L.A.
00:50I think he wants to be in L.A., but that may not happen, so we'll see come July 1st.
00:54So I honestly predicted before, and I still think it can happen.
00:58Cleveland would love to have him back for his farewell year,
01:01and I think they'll be able to give him more than or they'll put more on the table
01:05than the Lakers will offer him.
01:07That's my just guess.
01:09And Danny, they talk about the legacy of people and all that stuff,
01:13and we've talked about everybody.
01:15LeBron's the center of basketball.
01:17When we talk about that, bro, the legacy of it, him going back to Cleveland again
01:22and he has the school there and all that.
01:25When he left Miami, went back there with Kyrie and won it.
01:27Like, the legacy side of it, if you were a big bro and he asked you,
01:32what would you think the legacy side of it would look like?
01:35Where should he go when I'm telling my grandson about it?
01:41Yeah, I mean, for me, that's why it shows Cleveland.
01:44I think Cleveland makes the most sense for his legacy if he leaves L.A.
01:47I don't see him going anywhere else.
01:49It doesn't look right.
01:51It feels weird, him being another jersey outside of a Laker
01:53or a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform.
01:55I don't see him going back to Miami.
01:57So I think it's either between the Lakers and Cleveland, honestly,
02:00for him to finish off his career.
02:01That's the legacy for me standpoint.
02:04But for him, again, you never know.
02:06He might want to do a farewell tour where he just wants to have fun.
02:10He might be in a city and wants to give him everything
02:11or where they can just have the whole season about him.
02:14And the teams that he may be looking at or searching for
02:17may not want to do that.
02:18But I think it makes the most sense either of those two cities
02:21where his legacy will carry on or be left better in those uniforms.
02:28And D.G., you know, they get on me all the time.
02:32I'm an old curmudgeonist dude.
02:33The farewell tours.
02:35How do you feel about the farewell tours where they need all the –
02:38they want everybody to clap for him and all that stuff, man?
02:41But I'm not a fan, bro.
02:43Go play ball.
02:44Well, LeBron doesn't want it, supposedly, right?
02:47I just like – both sides.
02:49Like, I think guys want it.
02:50I don't know.
02:51I think guys want it.
02:52But then, like, it looks funny to old, curmudgeonist, you know,
02:56sports fans like me.
03:02Danny Green here with us.
03:04Hey, Danny, let me ask you this too.
03:06Where were you the night of the decision?
03:08Like, what do you remember when LeBron announced
03:10that he was going to take his talents to South Beach?
03:12I was in the locker room.
03:14I was in Cleveland.
03:15I was a rookie coming off my rookie year, going into our second year,
03:18waiting for summer league.
03:18So, we're all in the Cleveland Cavaliers facility.
03:20I was in the cold tub.
03:22We're all watching to see if he's going to come back.
03:23Is he going to stay?
03:24Is he going somewhere?
03:25So, I was watching the cold tub with the rest of the guys that were still in town.
03:28And it was a surprising night.
03:31It was kind of awkward.
03:32It was weird.
03:33But I'm also with you guys on the – I think most players want the farewell thing.
03:38He said, I mean, I don't think he doesn't want it.
03:40He definitely wants it.
03:41But he deserves it, man.
03:42He puts in 23 years.
03:43I don't think he should have to say it needs to be celebrated.
03:44But people will celebrate him anyway, as they should.
03:47So, he deserves that farewell, that last year, to be the right way.
03:53But, Danny, I find it funny because I'm with you, by the way.
03:59Like, I'm with everything you're saying in terms of he deserves a farewell tour,
04:0223 years, unbelievable.
04:04All that stuff is true.
04:05But why do I feel like everybody's just putting LeBron in a position where,
04:10oh, this is going to end up being his last year?
04:13Yeah, because he could play another two or three more years.
04:16Like, the way he's playing, if he wanted to, he could play another two more years.
04:20And every year, he proves me wrong.
04:21He proves everybody else wrong.
04:22I think, oh, this has got to be it.
04:23This has got to be it.
04:24And he keeps coming back.
04:25So, I mean, I won't put that out of question.
04:27Like, that's definitely in the question where he could play another year after next year.
04:31But I'd like to think after 24, this is 23.
04:34Now, that 24th year, I don't see him wanting to do.
04:36He loves the process.
04:37He's passionate about it.
04:38He obsesses over the game.
04:40But at some point, man, it's got to become tiresome for your mind, body, and spirit
04:44to get up every day and to prove or do something you have nothing left to prove on
04:49in that space.
04:51So, I think his body is mine.
04:52If he takes the offseason and he stops, it's harder to get back into the flow when you stop
04:56as you get older.
04:56You guys know this.
04:57So, when he does an offseason of that or a training camp, he's going to be like, damn,
05:00I don't know if I could do this again.
05:02So, I just can't imagine, which I've said every year, that him doing more than one more
05:05a year after next year.
05:06But it is very possible.
05:08Danny Green here with us.
05:10And I remember that summer where LeBron left the Cavs to go to the Heat.
05:15And really, it felt like Stephen A. Smith and Chris Broussard had a different team each
05:20day.
05:21It's kind of starting to feel that way via the trade market for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
05:25Like, the Thunder lose.
05:27Oh, maybe Giannis is getting traded to the Thunder.
05:29It's the Celtics.
05:30Here in Miami, everyone wants Giannis.
05:32Do you feel like Giannis is going to get traded to the Heat?
05:34Or do you kind of feel this is going to go elsewhere?
05:38I don't know, man.
05:39I think it's a good chance he gets to Miami.
05:41I mean, the Knicks were an option for him, but they look like they're in good space.
05:45OKC said they're not interested as well.
05:46San Antonio, again, those three teams, they feel like they're in a good place.
05:50They don't need Giannis.
05:51They could acquire him if they wanted to, but they don't need him.
05:54But I think, yeah, he ends up elsewhere.
05:55If he doesn't end up elsewhere, I think Miami has a really good shot.
05:58But that's just how free agency goes.
05:59When you have a top free agent like that or a top star that's not happy where he's at
06:02currently and wants to be traded.
06:04Every team is going to put their bid in.
06:06And same with LeBron.
06:07Like, his free agency, we haven't seen him be a free agent in who knows how long.
06:10And Giannis, he's never been available.
06:12This is the first time in his career that we were like, oh, he's available to be traded.
06:15So every team is going to try to get him.
06:17So I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Miami uniform.
06:20Like, that would be a good spot for him and for them to kind of turn things around.
06:24So, but Danny, but Danny, what two bigs, like it would be Bam and him, the two bigs, the
06:28front court would, I've said it, I've talked about it on this show, bro.
06:32Like, the front court would be stupid.
06:34But like, is that, the game has changed from that.
06:37When I know, I know Giannis has stretched the court.
06:40Bam's starting to shoot more threes.
06:41But that combination, Bam-Yanis, could that be one and two on a team that competes?
06:50I've seen stranger things happen.
06:52I know it sounds weird, but I think there's a world where a spoke can make it work.
06:56And mind you, they don't have to play the bulk of the minutes together.
06:58They can play a good amount together, of course, but there's also times where they
07:01can split time.
07:02If you have the other right pieces around them, that can be, you know, one of them has
07:06to be a two.
07:08I think one of them has to be a one.
07:09I think Giannis will be the one.
07:10You need a two in between, you know, him and Bam, which is like a perimeter guy.
07:15You need another really good scoring perimeter person.
07:17Is that Devin Booker?
07:18Is it Tyler Hero?
07:19We don't know.
07:19Is it somebody that's not happy in free agency?
07:22But you need another guy, and then you have floor space.
07:24If you have the right floor spaces, that group would work fine, you know, because
07:27there's this him and Bam clean up on the glass.
07:28They can dominate inside, and you have shooting on the outside where you can't
07:31double-team them.
07:32So it could work.
07:33You just have the right personnel around it, and you have the right coaching staff to do
07:37it.
07:38Before, I know we're going to talk about the finals, but I
07:40I might as well sneak this in since Crowder brought up the Miami Heat.
07:44I still have nightmares of you tearing up the heat in 2014 in the finals.
07:49It took me a while.
07:51Yeah, it took me a while, honestly, to take it over that, man.
07:55I'm sorry to hear that, man.
07:57I mean, I had nightmares, too.
07:58I mean, we end up losing the series, so it would have been nice to win.
08:01But it was a fun series.
08:03It was a lot of fun.
08:03When I actually tried to even get down there at one free agency, I was trying to get there.
08:06But then they signed Duncan Robinson to that extension, that five-year deal, free agency,
08:11five-year deal.
08:12And I was like, oh, no chance for me to get to mine.
08:15Because I was, like, you know, ready to play there.
08:17Like, I'm familiar with the rims.
08:18It's a good system.
08:19I love Spoh.
08:20Like, they have a great system over there.
08:22I would love to play there.
08:22But that opportunity got wiped away when they brought back Duncan Robinson.
08:26But it was a good, fun finals each year that I played there.
08:29Two finals against Miami.
08:30We got a chance to win one.
08:31But the one that you're talking about, I actually lost.
08:33So hopefully, you don't have too bad of nightmares.
08:36Well, I was talking about 2014.
08:39That's where the nightmares...
08:40Oh, okay.
08:40Yeah, that year.
08:41Yeah.
08:41But what...
08:43Not to take you down, you know, the path of having to remember that 2013 series.
08:48But what can you say about the aftermath of that?
08:52Like, when it's Summer and you and the rest of that team, right?
08:56Pop, Timmy, Manu.
08:59Like, what are the conversations like when it was that close and it was there, right?
09:05Like, you guys had it.
09:06What are the conversations like that offseason?
09:09Man, I'd imagine...
09:10I was just talking about this today on the show.
09:12I imagine OKC is going to have those conversations this summer.
09:15And I imagine the loser of this finals, whether it's the Knicks or San Antonio,
09:18are going to have those same conversations.
09:21It was just a tough, you know, year of being in the film room.
09:23We got to get better.
09:24We got to get back there.
09:25The whole following year of getting back there was, you know, dreadful.
09:29You know, it was tough to endure.
09:32But, you know, it made it all worth it, getting back to that place
09:35and being a team that can get it done.
09:38So, but the conversations are, you know, we got to find ways to beat this team.
09:41This is the team we got to get over.
09:43I'm sure we can say, like, we got to beat the Spurs.
09:44We got to go through them to get there again.
09:46Spurs are going to be like, oh, we got to beat OKC.
09:47We got to prepare for the Knicks and vice versa.
09:50The Knicks on the east side, whoever's on the east,
09:51we got to beat the Spurs and OKC if they come out of the west.
09:54So each summer you got to find and make up your team
09:57and get better to beat the team that's the team.
10:00And I'm sure those teams that I mentioned are going to have the same conversation for us.
10:04It was like, we got to find a way to beat Miami.
10:06They're a great team.
10:07We were there.
10:07We had an opportunity.
10:08We went seven games.
10:09We should have beat them before that.
10:10It just didn't happen for us.
10:11But we got to get back there.
10:13And when we get back there, we got to make sure we practice
10:15and our habits are ten times better so that we can be able to give ourselves
10:19an even better chance of winning the next time we match up with them.
10:22You being someone that has won with the Spurs, to see them now back,
10:27and also we all know Wemby's an alien, but to see that emotion
10:31and how much it meant to him to go to the finals, what did that mean to you?
10:35Yeah, man, I thought it was just the world.
10:37I was so happy for him and that group because, you know,
10:39it means the world to him.
10:41Like, he cares so much.
10:42Like, he's emotions.
10:43He wears it on his sleeve.
10:43He's crying.
10:44He's excited.
10:46Like, you know, Channing, you can tell he's a younger guy.
10:49Like, younger kids, they're just so much.
10:50Every game weighs so much on them because, you know, they're new to it.
10:55Like, when you play a bunch of 82-game seasons, you're like,
10:57you've seen so much.
10:58You get excited but not as excited because, like,
11:01you've been through so much ups and downs,
11:03and not every game you can put so much energy into it.
11:05He's putting so much energy into every game,
11:07even regular season playoffs.
11:08So, I was just so happy for him, happy for the organization
11:10that they got back to where they're supposed to be.
11:13And I hope they can continue to do that in the future.
11:16What do you think this final's come down to, by the way,
11:19between the Knicks and the Spurs?
11:21It's going to come down to the others, man.
11:22It's always, like, who's going to show up?
11:24Is it more of the Knicks guys that are going to show up?
11:26Is it going to be Shamit, Deuce McBride, and Mikael Bridges?
11:30Or is it going to be, you know, Kelton Johnson, Vassell, and Shan Penny?
11:34You know, so we're going to see who comes our way with the crown.
11:37It's going to be, I think, at least a six-game series.
11:40And, DG, I was – with Wimby, like, I always look for a cheat code.
11:45But he is crazy.
11:46He's about to be the face of the league for years.
11:49You know what I'm saying?
11:50But, like –
11:51Oh, for sure.
11:51He definitely is.
11:52I watched OKC with him, and, like, they started beating up.
11:56I'll start Harkinstein.
11:57Chet's down there fighting.
11:58Chet can't score a damn point because he's not getting over Wimby.
12:01But, like, you saw the approach to Wimby.
12:04Like, you have to beat him up.
12:06Is that a – like, is that a real approach to a guy like him?
12:10Like, are we going to see him – are we going to see teams try to bully him
12:14for the rest of his entire career?
12:16Because it seems like that's the only way to try to slow him down.
12:20Absolutely.
12:21You know it is.
12:22And you bet the Knicks are going to do the same.
12:24They're going to have Mitchell Robinson doing that type of tactics against him
12:28and leaning on him so he can't get rebounds.
12:30He can't block shots.
12:31And that's why I think it's going to depend on the others.
12:34Mitchell Robinson is a big key in Josh Hart, like,
12:35of their offensive rebounding power and dictating the series.
12:38So we'll see what those guys can bring, what they can do,
12:41and if they can keep that up to win the series for the New York City.
12:45But is that a – like, I don't know.
12:47You've played a long time, bro.
12:48So is that – does that affect guys?
12:50Because, like, it's always, you know, he can't play the pick and roll
12:54or he can't guard the perimeter and all that.
12:56Like, going into a game with a young dude to be like, bro,
12:59they about to come out here and try to whoop your ass for four quarters.
13:03Like, it is what it is.
13:05Like, you know what I'm saying?
13:06That approach to it, how does that work with a young guy like Wimby?
13:11Mentally and physically it wears on you.
13:13It takes time.
13:14Again, you got to take your lumps.
13:15And most teams taking in the playoffs, semifinals, they might take them in the finals.
13:19But you grow from each possession or each series, each postseason, and you get better.
13:24But it definitely wears on you throughout the year and that series.
13:28So as a player, you know they're targeting you.
13:30Sometimes you get frustrated.
13:30You got to keep your cool.
13:32So, again, we'll see how Wimby – he's faced so many challenges.
13:35And this last challenge at OKC was a big one.
13:37It was a good one.
13:38And it's prepared for the next one.
13:39But this one is a different one.
13:41It's not the same as Chet and Hartenstein.
13:43This is Mitch Robinson and Kat.
13:45They're a bigger body.
13:45So it's even harder for him to overcome this one.
13:48So we'll see if he can handle it and if he can answer the keys to this test.
13:54You know, going off of that and just talking about the mental component of it,
13:58you playing so many years in the league, like in a week or two when it dies down,
14:03what's the conversations like with Chet Holmgren?
14:05Because a year ago, he's on the top of the world.
14:08And, you know, the last 24 hours, 48 hours, he's just getting slammed left and right.
14:13You got to be – you got to be able to beat this guy.
14:15This is the guy you're matched up with.
14:16You got to be better for our team.
14:18And you got to, you know, show and prove against him.
14:21You know, for some reason, he's a – for some reason, we know.
14:24Y'all have a competitive nature rivalry against each other.
14:26And you better get better in the gym to be able to compete with him.
14:30It's not better than him.
14:31So, you know, that's the summer you're dedicated toward now.
14:34So that's the conversation.
14:35We need you.
14:36We need to be aggressive.
14:36Whether you play bad or good, like you got to be aggressive.
14:38You can't not shoot the ball.
14:40And Wemmy's the guy that you're going to help us get over and get through.
14:43So he's going to have to, you know, have an individual summer
14:47and then look himself in the mirror
14:49and then see whether or not he's up for that challenge.
14:51And how do you feel about the narrative, bro, of Brunson?
14:55Six-two, small guards don't win.
14:57You said he probably was six-two in fourth grade.
15:00But being six-two, that small guard thing where they're saying small guards
15:04can't win, small guards can't win.
15:06What's that narrative?
15:07Like, is Brunson fighting that narrative or is it just – it doesn't make sense?
15:13No, I mean, he's fighting that narrative.
15:15Not many have done it, but people have done it.
15:16And he might be the next one to do it.
15:18We've seen Steph.
15:19We've seen Isaiah.
15:20We've seen some guys, you know what I'm saying, at that size,
15:22be able to win championships and lead a team as a 1A.
15:25And he might be the next up.
15:26So he's going to come and show and prove.
15:28And if he does that, I think he can lead his team to victory
15:30because they're really good.
15:31It's not just him.
15:32And him taking a cut was the biggest thing, right?
15:34Him being able to take a pay cut and have those other guys be signed
15:37helped out their organization tremendously.
15:40Last thing for you, Danny Green.
15:42I know that there's been some distractions in San Antonio
15:45by some of the people sitting courtside.
15:47Then you get to New York, you got Chalamet and Jenner,
15:50you got Stiller and Spike Lee.
15:53Do you remember someone sitting courtside when you were playing
15:56that you were just, like, starstruck by?
16:00Yeah, usually in San Antonio, my first couple of years,
16:02it takes you some time to get over that.
16:04When you go to L.A. or New York, you see them.
16:06You see Spike.
16:07You see, you know, Sam Hayek or Detective Benson.
16:10That's Mariska Hardigay.
16:11She's, I think, a Knicks fan now, too.
16:13But she was in L.A. or something like that.
16:15And then you go to different places.
16:17You see Cam Newton or something like that.
16:19When I was in my, like, certain people, you don't get,
16:21it takes, like, a year or two to get used to it.
16:23So, yeah, but when you, and then when I played in L.A.,
16:26you kind of get used to those people being there
16:27and you've been around the league long enough.
16:29You're not starstruck as much by it.
16:31But I was a big movie fan.
16:32So, seeing certain movie stars for me, it kind of, you know,
16:35made my night.
16:35And they were able to, like, see them watch me play,
16:37which is kind of cool.
16:39And, brother, we had an argument on the show, big dog,
16:42because Solana, my man, was talking about, like,
16:46the Knicks being relevant again.
16:48When it hasn't been 27 years, we all know the numbers since they won.
16:52He was saying that the mecca of basketball, Madison Square Garden,
16:58doesn't mean anything.
17:00Talking about the fans, like, when you play in the garden,
17:04is it really what people say it is?
17:06Because I can't play a damn lick of basketball, bro.
17:09But they say the garden is stupid.
17:11Yeah, and, Danny, you could say Solana's an effing moron if you want,
17:14by the way.
17:14You could just say he's dumb and doesn't know what he's talking about.
17:16Yeah, it's an experience, man.
17:18And it is a mecca, and it's a crazy place to play in.
17:21And it gets loud.
17:22I've got an opportunity to play one playoff series there
17:24when I was with the Cavs toward the end of my career.
17:27And, man, I was blown away by how the energy was in that building.
17:30And I played some really great franchises.
17:32San Antonio was great.
17:33Toronto was great.
17:33Like, the fans were amazing.
17:34Even L.A. and Philly, you know, Memphis, Cleveland.
17:38But the garden is a special place.
17:39And I said I'm biased because my San Antonio fans were amazing,
17:42and so was Toronto, like, the two teams that don't really have
17:45other professional teams around them and was able to win one there.
17:48But the garden, it gets live in there, man.
17:50That building gets rocking and shaking.
17:51It's a little bit older.
17:53You might think it might come down if you're in there,
17:55and they start exploding when somebody makes a big shot.
17:58Yeah.
17:59Danny, of course, you only played one playoff series there
18:01because that's my whole point.
18:03They never made the playoffs.
18:04Oh, goodness.
18:05My entire life, there's never been any.
18:07And credit, credit.
18:09Hey, Danny, credit to them now.
18:11Credit to them now.
18:12Their run to the finals is legit.
18:14I'm not taking anything away from that.
18:16But my point is…
18:17I saw it, man.
18:18Right.
18:18But my point is nothing meaningful has happened in that building
18:21since 1973, and everybody talks about it like it's the staple of basketball.
18:26I think San Antonio has a claim to fame.
18:29I think Los Angeles Staples Center, Crypto.com Arena,
18:32has that claim to fame.
18:33The other garden in Boston, like, those are real buildings
18:36where championships are being raised in Miami.
18:39Nothing's happening in New York.
18:40Nothing's happening in New York.
18:42It's a special building, though, my man.
18:44You can't deny it.
18:45When you're in there, if you're always getting to feel that energy.
18:48Again, I've been in L.A.
18:49I've been in Boston.
18:50Boston's good, too.
18:50L.A.
18:51We've got some fans.
18:51And some of those fans are spoiled.
18:53You know, they've won so much.
18:54And it's a city that has a lot to do.
18:55A lot going on.
18:56New York's the same, but they're blue-collar, man.
18:58Just like Philly.
18:59They're in your space.
19:00They're bullies.
19:01They're not cyber bullies.
19:03A man that's played there.
19:04Can you now understand it?
19:07He's played there.
19:08He's actually been on the court playing, shooting, winning, defense.
19:13He's telling you this.
19:14Yeah, no.
19:15I mean, it's a great building for Big East basketball.
19:17I think.
19:18You know what, Danny?
19:20My bad, Danny.
19:21My bad, Danny.
19:21I just hate the Knicks, my man.
19:23It's all good.
19:23I didn't grow up a Knicks fan either, but I understand it.
19:26Some people just can't like the Knicks.
19:27I get it, man.
19:28Yeah, and Danny, I'm not even denying it.
19:30I'm in full hater mode down here in Miami.
19:32We're throwing a parade when the Knicks lose down Bird Road here in Miami.
19:36If you're interested.
19:37I'm sure they are.
19:38If you're interested, you let me know.
19:41I'm sure all those cities are throwing parades when they lose, if they lose.
19:44So, it's going to be fun, man.
19:45It's going to be a great series, though.
19:46I think we'll get at least six games of great basketball, high-level, intense, physical.
19:50And you said, when be in the guard, man?
19:52It's going to be star-studded.
19:54Danny, we won't make you listen to this jackass, Solana, anymore.
19:57We appreciate the time.
19:58Thanks so much for doing it.
20:00Appreciate you guys, man.
20:01You guys be safe.
20:01Enjoy the playoffs.
20:02There you go.
20:03Danny Green joining us right there on Hockey Week Crowder.
20:06Solana, how are you going to embarrass me in front of my friend?
20:09I think Danny Green loved me.
20:11And by the way, just call him Danny.
20:13We got it with the DG stuff, Crowder.
20:16DG.
20:17Like, just call him Danny.
20:18You didn't grow up like we grew up.
20:20That's how we talk.
20:22Yo, CC, what are we doing later tonight?
20:25Where are you at?
20:28I'm in New York.
20:29I don't know where you are.
20:30But, you know, DG, CC, it flows.
20:33Like, who?
20:33A.S.?
20:35Another sucker?
20:37Is that what it is?
20:38You better get a quick flight if we're hanging out tonight.
20:42Yeah, I may be going home in a body bag, honestly.
20:47We're going to fight.
20:48We're fighting next time we talk.
20:50I'm not that concerned.
20:51Like, if it was 10 years ago, I'd be concerned.
20:54You know, now, one little shot in the legs, you're done.
20:57I never think, I never just assume wins anymore, but we're both going to go to the hospital.
21:02Then we're going to go have dinner at Prime 112.
21:05That's fine.
21:05As long as the company pays for my medical bills, I have no problem.
21:10That will be the last day Channing Crowder works for WQAM.
