00:00Hey guys, it's Lucy Fink, and welcome back to another installment of Try Living with Lucy, Dance Edition.
00:07Dance!
00:08I feel like I kind of look naked in this vlog, but I'm not naked at all.
00:11I asked my Instagram followers what type of dance they wanted to see me try in 5 Days of Dance,
00:16and I got hundreds of requests for hip-hop.
00:19Let me just say, hip-hop is absolutely my dance style of choice.
00:23Anyone who follows me on Instagram knows that I frequently post videos of me doing hip-hop dance classes as
00:29a form of workout.
00:30I also appreciate the dance style as an art form.
00:33I love the sharp beats and the way the human form looks while dancing the style.
00:38I can watch hip-hop dance videos all day.
00:41Today, I took a private hip-hop lesson with Alastair Williams, the executive director of the dance studio Broadway Bodies.
00:48Broadway Bodies is the best shame-free dance party that you can ever go to,
00:53and we do themes like Beyonce and Hamilton.
00:56It's a hoot.
00:57For my private lesson today, I met Alastair on a New York City rooftop
01:01because hip-hop is from the Empire State.
01:04So where better to feel connected to this dance style's roots than right next to the Empire State Building?
01:10Nowhere.
01:10Alastair walked me through the moves, eight counts at a time.
01:13Five, six, seven, and clap eight.
01:18And we learned them very slowly and precisely.
01:21Elbow, elbow.
01:22With a lot of repetition.
01:24Boom, boom, boom.
01:25Ah, ah.
01:26Exactly.
01:27All the way from the beginning?
01:28All the way from the beginning.
01:30Elbow, elbow, snap.
01:32Slide back.
01:33Now jump, cross.
01:34Seven, eight, one, two.
01:36Hip-hop is, of course, an urban dance style.
01:40And it mixes the worlds of African dance and jazz dance for this very hard-hitting dance style.
01:47Six, seven, and jump, jump, cross.
01:51Boom, boom.
01:51Often, we use dance as a form of expression.
01:55And hip-hop derives from that time of anger, frustration.
01:58And a high punch.
01:59I love this.
02:00Stop.
02:01Yeah, yeah.
02:01This is working.
02:01Ugh.
02:02Yes!
02:03I got that aggression.
02:04I haven't been working yet.
02:05I've just been dancing.
02:07Yes!
02:07Let it go.
02:08Certain moves were easier for me to pick up on than others.
02:12Oh, snap.
02:13I'm losing it.
02:13You're there.
02:14Ah.
02:14Ah.
02:15Forgot everything.
02:16Forgot everything.
02:17You're pushing.
02:19Step, touch, step, touch.
02:20My glasses are flying up.
02:22Yeah.
02:22Turn.
02:23Wrong way.
02:24I turned the wrong way.
02:25That's the thing with dance.
02:27Sometimes you just think you know it all.
02:29And then you're dancing, and you're moving, and your brain just blacks out.
02:34Story of my life.
02:35That's like every day in real life, not even in the dance studio.
02:39But the hardest part was when we actually did the dance in real time, the speed it was
02:42actually going to be, the moves were really fast.
02:46Five, six, seven.
02:47Elbow.
02:48Snap.
02:49Ooh.
02:49Slide.
02:50Jump, duck, duck.
02:52Two punches.
02:53Now slide.
02:54Knees.
02:55Ah, ah.
02:55There.
02:57I know, it's a lot.
02:59It's so fast.
03:00It's a lot.
03:00Knees, body roll.
03:02Turn, turn, turn.
03:04Today is 95 degrees in New York, burning sunshine, steamy air.
03:10You're there.
03:10Hot day.
03:11Hot day in New York.
03:12It's a hot day in New York.
03:13It's a hot day by the Empire State Building.
03:16Empire State Building.
03:18We would have loved to slay to Beyonce or Bieber or a whole variety of other artists, but you
03:23know, music licensing and copyright issues are a real drag.
03:27So instead, we got a hold of a music track that we had the rights to use, and it was
03:31called,
03:32wait for it, Hooker Jams.
03:35And that really helped fuel our fire.
03:37Lucy is going to absolutely pick up the rhythms, but if she doesn't, I just want her to give
03:41me a lot of good face.
03:42Let's go.
03:51Bye.
03:55Bye.
04:04Bye.
04:07Bye.
04:08Bye.
04:09Bye.
04:11Bye.
04:39I'm so shocked that I got that.
04:43Not easy.
04:45All in all, I learned about one minute of choreography, which sounds short, but that is a very long
04:50dance to remember.
04:51So if you're ever in New York and you get the chance to go to a Broadway Bodies class,
04:55do it.
04:56You're my favorite teacher ever.
04:58I love it.
05:00Oh, man.
05:01And you're from the Empire State Building.
05:02Look at this.
05:03My ex-wife lives on the top floor of that.
05:05Of what?
05:06Of the Empire State Building.
05:07Hi, Alistair's ex.
05:09Look here.
05:09I'm here, boo.
05:10I made it.
05:13How were my hip-hop moves?
05:15Give this video a thumbs up if you liked it, and if you want to see my next dance video,
05:19come back next week.
05:20In the meantime, click here to watch another video, here to subscribe to us on YouTube, and
