00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this is five days of great hair. Hey everyone! Welcome back to
00:05Refinery29's YouTube channel. If you're new here be sure to click on the little
00:08subscribe button in the corner and give this video a thumbs up if you're excited
00:12to see me attempt five different hairstyles. Do you want to know what I
00:15learned recently? Only one in ten women claim that they consistently have good
00:19hair days. One in ten? That's only ten percent. Math. I don't know about you but
00:23I think ten percent of women thinking they're having a good hair day is just
00:27way too low. If you have hair on your head you know that having a good hair day
00:31can make you feel so much happier and so much more confident throughout the
00:34course of the day. So this week I partnered up with Pantene to try five new
00:38hairstyles and to learn how to make every single day this week a great hair day.
00:42Before even beginning this week, so all the way back on Sunday, I shampooed and
00:46conditioned my hair using Pantene's repair and protect collection. Knowing that I
00:50was about to be a little bit rougher on my hair than normal I wanted to minimize
00:54damage and breakage. And now let's jump right in.
00:59I feel like a hairstyle can affect my entire personality. A very bold and
01:03confident style can make me feel empowered to get out there and try new
01:07things. Whereas a real slicked back power look can make me feel like a boss.
01:12Monday's hairstyle was a power bun. I'm used to wearing my hair down so even
01:16pulling it back and pulling it off of my shoulders has me feeling a little bit
01:20exposed and uncomfortable. But there's something very special about not having
01:24hair to hide behind. It almost forces you to feel empowered. I started off the
01:28bun by making a sharp side part. I pulled my hair back into a tight low ponytail
01:32and then I began twisting the ponytail until it started swirling around itself
01:37creating almost a donut shape. I started adding bobby pins and then tweaking it to
01:41make sure there were no flyaways. Lastly I used some hairspray to flatten out the top
01:45of my hair and I even put spray directly on the comb to flatten out the baby hairs
01:49around the edge of my face. Once the bun was in I paired this hairstyle with the
01:53best power suit I could find and then I headed upstairs to work. It was a busy day
01:58in the office. I started the day off by getting some busy work done at my desk.
02:01When I'm not on set a day in the office for me always looks different. Sometimes
02:05I'm at my computer watching rough cuts of videos and giving notes. Other times I'm
02:09doing pre-production and I'm planning for upcoming shoots and there are
02:12always so many emails to answer and so many decisions to make. I ran out in the
02:17middle of the day to grab lunch and I realized that the combination of this
02:20hairstyle with the power suit outfit was actually affecting the way I was walking.
02:25I wasn't just walking I was power striding down that street. Coming back into the
02:29office I was immediately on to the next task. My intern met me the moment I
02:33stepped off the elevator and the two of us rushed to our next meeting while we
02:36discussed so many upcoming things we have to do. Let's send this out fast. Okay. Tell them
02:41they really need to hurry. Sometimes when my hair is down I find myself touching it
02:44for no apparent reason. Almost like a crutch. But on Monday I couldn't do that.
02:48I was forced to face whatever was in front of me. It did feel very different from
02:51the way I typically look but even still it was a great hair day. Please cancel
02:55everything. We don't have time.
02:59When I woke up on Tuesday morning I was still feeling powerful from Monday's look
03:03but I have to say towards the end of the day on Monday I was starting to feel a
03:06little bit stern and rigid. So on Tuesday I had the urge to just let loose and do
03:11something a little fun and creative. I typically show my artistic side by
03:15making video content for YouTube like this right here or through bullet
03:19journaling, watercoloring, and doing craft projects. But on Tuesday I wanted to go
03:23big. And if I was gonna do something really creative and artistic then I needed a
03:28hairstyle to match that. I started out by adding some clip-in extensions to my hair.
03:32Now this is something I've never done before but I love the wild and untamed look
03:37they gave me. I teased my hair to get the extensions to stay locked in there and
03:41once they were secured I just set myself free, styling my hair in a whole
03:45variety of ways. I felt compelled to curl some pieces, some pieces I crimped using
03:49the flat iron, and other pieces I braided. There was really no rhyme or reason to
03:53this style. I was not emulating a look that I had seen anywhere before. I was
03:57essentially just being crafty and doing arts and crafts on my hair. And once I had
04:01finished styling my hair I packed up my art supplies and headed out to Smart Space
04:05Studios, an artistic collective in New York City. Painting is in my blood. My mom
04:09is a painter. She actually painted most of the artwork in this apartment, including
04:13these three paintings right above my head. And even though I do watercolor
04:17occasionally, one thing I haven't really done is take a giant canvas and paint
04:21something big. So I brought in a couple of large canvases and a ton of acrylic paint.
04:26I found a photo of myself on Instagram that was really calling my name. It was
04:30honestly a little bit ambitious of me to try and paint that image on my first try,
04:34but I just went for it anyway. After outlining it in pencil I started adding
04:38my first strokes of paint to the canvas. I just got into the zone and let my
04:42hand fly, bringing this photo to life. I ran into a little bit of trouble with the
04:47details on my face, so after about five minutes I stepped back and I looked at it
04:51and I thought, wow that's really creepy. Kind of looks like a pirate with a beard. But
04:56thankfully another artist that was using the studio space came over and she gave me a
05:00little mini lesson. So I let her actually put her brush to my canvas and she taught
05:04me shadowing. Some shadow that's a nice kind of warm skin color. Not as much brown.
05:10Brown. Shading, different color mixing techniques. And with her help I was able to
05:15finalize the details on the face, adding proper shadows, reshaping my eyes, and
05:20completely fixing the hair so that it no longer looked like a creepy pirate beard.
05:24Let there be eyes. And if I do say so myself, I think by the end it came out
05:28looking pretty good. And I like the texture of the pants. Yeah! She likes it!
05:33As soon as I finished it, I moved on to the bigger canvas that I brought to do
05:37some splatter painting. Splatter painting is one of my favorite painting styles
05:41because just like that hairstyle I had in, it's totally messy and completely
05:45unpredictable. Even just one unique flick of the wrist can change the entire
05:49outcome of the painting. And I realized that the act of creating that hairstyle
05:53wasn't all that different from the act of putting paint onto a canvas. It was
05:57completely spontaneous and in the moment.
06:00When I woke up on Wednesday morning, my hair was, as you can imagine, a little bit
06:05naughty from Tuesday's look. So I followed up my morning shampoo and conditioner with
06:09a Pantene Intense Rescue Shot, which targets extreme damage and prevents split ends.
06:14Something that I majorly needed after a day of extensions and paint and a ton of heat
06:19on my hair. For the next look, I wanted to go one step beyond the creative and
06:23wacky hairstyle on Tuesday and actually try something that was going to make me feel
06:26a lot younger and more playful. As an adult in the working world, it can be really
06:31easy to lose touch with your playful side and to just start thinking that
06:34everything is so serious. So when trying to come up with the best hairstyle to
06:39embody playfulness, I immediately thought of space buns. Beep, beep, boop, beep, beep, beep.
06:43I began by parting my hair down the middle and creating two high ponytails, one on each side.
06:48I added a few clip and extensions again for some extra volume and length.
06:52And then I put a hair doughnut in. I spread my hair around it to cover the doughnut,
06:57clipping in a few bobby pins along the way, and then secured it with an elastic.
07:00Lastly, I twisted the rest of the ponytail around it to create two mini buns at the top of my
07:06head.
07:06To make these space buns look extra galactic, I put hairspray down the center of my part and added glitter
07:12to make a glitter part. Once the look was complete, I knew the perfect place that I could showcase it.
07:17I left work a little bit earlier than normal and went to SPIN, a giant indoor ping pong social club
07:23in the Flatiron District. It's basically a huge event space underground with interactive games,
07:28food and drinks, and I met one-on-one with a Swedish ping pong pro.
07:33Hi there! Are you Lucy?
07:35That's me! I'm not quite sure how I got in here.
07:37She brought me over to a table and we just started rallying. After a few hits, she showed me her
07:41pro serve,
07:42which is basically a slice.
07:44It was seemingly impossible to return her serves, but she taught me exactly how to hold the paddle.
07:49And I'm hitting the ball on the side there, and that makes the ball spin that way.
07:55Yes!
07:56And where to aim.
07:57Try and go a little bit more that way.
07:58And guess what?
08:01Yay!
08:03I returned a serve of a 14-time Swedish ping pong pro. Just saying.
08:08This hairstyle was so cute and so playful, and the energy from this hairstyle was seeping into the energy
08:14that I was bringing to the table. This is not typically a hairstyle I would wear, especially the glitter part,
08:19but I have to say this style made my experience at SPIN even more fun.
08:29Thursday's look was all about confidence. When I think of a bold and fierce hairstyle,
08:34the first words that come to mind are curly, big, and wild. The image that comes to mind
08:38is Olivia Newton-John from that last scene of Grease with the big, bold curls, the all-black outfit,
08:44the red pumps on her feet, and bright red lipstick to match. I looked up how to do this hairstyle
08:49online
08:50and then gave it a try. I started with my hair straight and loose, and then I sectioned it off
08:54a little bit at a time and started making pin curls. Basically curling each piece around the curling iron
08:59and then wrapping the curl around my finger before pinning it up against my head.
09:03So that I could give my hair the most volume here, I needed to make sure to do this very
09:07meticulously
09:08around my entire head. Not skipping over any curls, not cutting corners and missing any sections.
09:14And this whole process alone wound up taking about an hour.
09:16As the pin curls set, I lined my lips with red liner and then filled them in with red liquid
09:21lipstick.
09:22And in about 15 minutes, it was time for the big reveal.
09:25I started with the lower back part of my hair, which had the longest time to cool.
09:28I pulled it out of the pin, fluffed the hair around a little bit, and then using a couple of
09:32fingers,
09:33I gave it a rough tease by pushing the hair up towards the root.
09:36After adding one final bobby pin to achieve that pinned-up look that she has in the movie,
09:40I was ready for my photoshoot on the streets of New York.
09:43When I thought about this bold and confident hairstyle, I wanted to make sure that I was
09:47pushing myself to do an activity that would require confidence.
09:51At this point, I'm pretty used to doing shoots in the street, but when you're in a costume-type
09:55outfit and you have wild hair and makeup, it's always a little bit daunting.
09:59My photographer, Elena, and I went around the corner from the office and snapped a few shots.
10:03One thing I have to say is that having the hairstyle from the movie really put me in character.
10:07You better shake it up!
10:08I was basically hearing grease songs on repeat in my head all day, and I was tempted to dance
10:13and do the hand jive, and that right there is proof enough that just changing your hairstyle
10:17can really influence the way you feel.
10:19I've never styled my hair like this before, but I absolutely loved it.
10:23It was very 50s.
10:27On the last day of this challenge, I wanted to try something that was completely out of my
10:32comfort zone, something I've never done before that honestly scared me a little bit.
10:36To match my hair to the theme of the day, I wanted to try a style that was a bit
10:39of a
10:39risk-taker style, something that I wasn't sure would work out.
10:43I had this vision of a French braid that went sweeping across the back of my head and then
10:47had pieces of my hair woven into it, almost like little bows cascading across my head.
10:52I tried it out by first attempting the French braid, which I should say is something I don't
10:57know how to do.
10:57After a few failed attempts, I called my friend, who's much better at braiding than I am.
11:01She lives in the building just next door and she happened to be free, so she came over
11:05to help me out.
11:06She put the braid in and then she started weaving the hair in and we both looked at it
11:09and we just thought, this doesn't look right.
11:11We really tried with that one, but when all was said and done, it was a major fail and
11:16that's okay.
11:16We took a risk, it didn't work out, so we just moved on to a new style.
11:19I threw my hair into a high ponytail and then I attempted a messy fishtail braid, also
11:24a type of braid that I don't know how to do, but I just follow directions for it online.
11:28And once I was happy with this risk taker hairstyle, I left home for my risk taker activity.
11:34Trapeze school.
11:36This is something I've been a little bit scared of, but I've been wanting to try for
11:39the longest time.
11:40So I made an appointment at Trapeze School New York in Brooklyn and I basically became
11:44an acrobat for the day.
11:45I was welcomed into the space.
11:47You are good to go.
11:48You can just set your stuff down and then the instructors will get you started.
11:51Perfect, thank you.
11:51And then I met the instructor who began by walking me through everything I was going
11:56to do.
11:56Some basic safety rules.
11:57Never walk into the net.
11:58Keep your hips thrusted forward.
12:00Keep the bar up high.
12:01Chin up.
12:02That's it.
12:03Just like that.
12:03If you fall off the board or off the bar and do anything crazy in the air, I'll just tighten
12:06up and let you gently down to the net.
12:08So you will be okay, even if it doesn't feel like you are.
12:10After the lesson, I had a safety belt put on me.
12:13I pulled down the rope, hooked myself into the clips.
12:15Clip.
12:17Clip.
12:18Chalked up my hands and then climbed on up the ladder.
12:20At the top, another staff member transferred my clips around as I held on for dear life.
12:25And then I grabbed the trapeze bar with my right hand and then gently reached for it with
12:30my left hand while the instructor held me back by my belt.
12:33All the while, you're pushing your hips forward over the edge of the platform and just hoping
12:37that he's really holding on back there.
12:39And then on the instructor's cue, you bend your knees, ready, and hup, you jump.
12:49And just like that, you're flying.
12:51Up on the trapeze, it is a major exercise in listening.
12:55So on every swing, you're listening carefully to his directions.
13:07You make sure you're tucking your knees at the right moment, releasing your hands at the
13:11right moment, and then dropping the bar at the right moment.
13:13When I first made it down, I was coursing with adrenaline.
13:21And once you land on the net, you land on your stomach and you flip off with a front tuck.
13:25Personally, I felt like I was good to go after the first flight, but the instructors at trapeze
13:30school really pushed you to get out of your comfort zone.
13:32So I wound up going again, and again, and again, and again, and again.
13:37By the end of the day, I had flown six times.
13:40I learned how to do a back tuck off the trapeze bar, and I even practiced catching, which is
13:45where I jump off of the platform on the exact cue of the guy that's sitting on the other
13:49trapeze bar.
13:50And as I'm flying forward, he's flying back, and we grab each other's wrists, and I release
13:58the bar, and then I'm flying with him.
14:00And just like that, I had conquered a major fear.
14:03Over the course of this week, I was completely shocked at how just by changing my hairstyle,
14:07my personality and intentions for the day would change too.
14:11I felt like the hairstyles affected my mindset, the tone of my voice, and the energy in my
14:17body.
14:17Woo!
14:19From something tight and sleek, to something creative and wild, to something completely
14:24new and unfamiliar to me, these styles were each incredibly unique and interesting.
14:29And I wound up thinking, every day of this week was a great hair day.
14:32Thank you so much for watching.
