00:17Palms, press, look up.
00:19Yoga, an ancient practice that combines movement, breathing, and mindfulness,
00:24is quickly becoming a go-to option for many people seeking ways to manage stress and improve their overall well
00:30-being.
00:31But when it comes to yoga, the way one breathes is especially important,
00:36as it can have a major impact on both physical and mental health.
00:40According to Troy Hadid, owner of Beyond Yoga Trinidad, says,
00:44breathing is a fundamental part of yoga and a powerful tool that many people overlook.
00:49He explains that the breath speaks to the mind, and learning to control it helps build a stronger relationship with
00:56the mind itself.
00:57In yoga, they have a teaching that says, mind is king of everything, but breath is king of your mind.
01:04Stress doesn't happen out here. Stress happens in here.
01:08There's a great psychologist, his near therapist, called Gabor Mati.
01:12He says, trauma is not what happens to us.
01:16It's what happens inside of us, in response to what happens to us.
01:21And I think that stress is very much the same, right?
01:25Stress is an internal response to external factors.
01:30In yoga, breathing techniques are used to support proper movement and posture.
01:35But the benefits of yoga and proper breathing extend far beyond the mat.
01:39Proper breathing can improve sleep, boost energy levels, and even support better posture during everyday activities.
01:46We do not pull air into our body, or else we'll just be sucking air.
01:52Because the more space we create by diaphragm descending, and the ribcage expanding, and the chest lifting,
02:00the more space we create, it's the more we lower the air pressure inside of us, which means the more
02:05air we can receive.
02:07He says, understanding the relationship between body and breath is key.
02:12If your body is tight and constricted, and your muscles are tight, and you're stressed and anxious, your body contracts.
02:21Which now means your ribcage can't expand.
02:25And the muscles of your legs, your lower body, connects to your diaphragm.
02:30It restricts the movement of your diaphragm.
02:33The practice of yoga postures, and what we call asana, on the very basic level,
02:39helps release physical tension in your body, so it allows your body to create space to receive breath and breathe
02:46differently.
02:47And if we breathe differently, we live differently.
02:50And as more people look for simple ways to manage daily stress,
02:54breathing properly may be one of the easiest and most effective places to start.
02:59Inhale for a count of four.
03:05Pause.
03:06Exhale for a count of four.
03:12Gently release your breath, and open your eyes.
