Seth and Sean see if Skip Bayless, Joe Espada, Dabo Swinney or Draymond Green can dethrone Skip himself in this week's Take-a-Mania.
Transcript
00:00All right, let's do it. Take-a-mania time. It is our Friday segment that we do where we
00:05take some of the worst takes of the week and see if they can take down our
00:10reigning, defending champion, Skip Bayless, who as we speak is returning to first take,
00:17ironically, this very moment. Bottom of the screen. Welcome back to first take, Skip Bayless.
00:22How long is he back for? Is this like an extended stay?
00:25I think it's just one day.
00:26No residency? I don't think it's a residency, but I would guess that Skip is probably
00:32viewing this as a bit of a tryout, maybe. He's doing his own thing now, but I would imagine
00:38he would love the platform and the cool human monies that come with being on first take.
00:44It's millions of dollars.
00:45As much as a lot of those guys get rolled out of various cable shows, either in sports or
00:51politics or anything, they make good money. They can do their own thing. They can make
00:55really good money. Maybe sometimes even more money than they're making on television.
00:59And yet, they tend to be people that really crave the spotlight.
01:03Yeah. So he might just still feel like no matter what money he's making doing his own
01:08internet thing, man, he misses being on in the doctor's office or at the airport when
01:15people are just sitting there.
01:16Oh, you see him on TV.
01:17There's Skip Bayless' face. Yeah.
01:18There's definitely a level of ego. Well, we're going to hear a level of ego with one
01:21of these cuts that old Skipper is on in Take-a-mania here, for sure. At least evidence of it.
01:27Boy, he looks so much older now. Oh, my God.
01:31Very fit, but just older. Yeah.
01:33Yeah, you know, it's just the face.
01:35Well, so he's on first take, he's wearing a suit and everything.
01:38He's got a suit on, yeah.
01:39When he does his internet stuff, he's like really fit for an older guy.
01:42Definitely.
01:43But it just, it looks, he's always wearing a t-shirt and everything, and it's, yeah,
01:48I like him in a suit.
01:49Yeah.
01:51Okay, so enough of viewing Skip on TV. Let's get to trashing his takes.
01:56This is his, he is the defending champ on Take-a-mania right now. He, for the first time
02:01in the history of this segment, won the belt last week, taking it from the Oregon QB coach
02:07who said that if a guy can't tell me right away if he likes chocolate or vanilla ice cream
02:12better, then I don't recruit. He's not my guy.
02:15Yeah.
02:15So here was Skip Bayless. Just not excited about Will Anderson when he goes to turn on the television
02:22and watch Texan games for very odd reasons.
02:24Fly off the screen because they play with hair on fire. You know, they play frenetic,
02:30frantic, electric sort of edge rush football where you're just saying, God, Trey Anderson
02:36does that to me. Will Anderson is an anchor. He's solid against the run and the pass where
02:43he's doing everything and he is commanding a double. So Daniil Hunter is eating 40 million
02:48worth a year. He's eating from the other side. But Will Anderson has not been box office for me.
02:54I don't turn on the TV thinking, oh, I get to watch Will Anderson rush the passer today.
02:58Whereas with Max Crosby, I promise you, that's all I got. When I'm watching the Raiders,
03:03I can't wait to watch Max Crosby fly off the edge and bend.
03:08Okay.
03:09Yeah. So because Will Anderson apparently doesn't play with frenetic hair on fire energy.
03:13I watch Will and I'm like, this guy is so docile right now.
03:17I'm tired of Will.
03:18Can someone light a fire under this guy?
03:20Playing like there's nothing, like he doesn't have a full can of hairspray on his head.
03:25Someone light his hair on fire. Please.
03:28All right. So we've, we've talked about that clip.
03:30Yeah.
03:30Bad take.
03:31Yep. Yep. Bad take. So I wanted the first one out of the shoot to be skip versus skip.
03:36Skip v. Skip.
03:37Skip v. Skip. The two Spider-Mans pointing at each under.
03:40Undertaker versus Undertaker from back in the day for you WWE fans.
03:44Here was skip with yet another Will Anderson related take incredulous that the Texans would
03:51pay Will Anderson Jr. before giving an extension to CJ Stroud.
03:57I'm going to take it another level up. I can't believe they paid Will Anderson before they
04:02paid CJ. I, if I were CJ, I would be offended by that because you're the franchise quarterback
04:09and you have shown it. And not only did you show it in a, in a great rookie year, talk
04:15about pocket feet. It wasn't, it wasn't Jayden Daniels quite, but it was in the ballpark
04:21and he was the offensive rookie of the year and made the Pro Bowls rookie. And that's all
04:26you need to know.
04:28Yeah. That's all, that's all you need to know.
04:30That's all you need to know.
04:30That's all you need to know.
04:31Two years ago, he was rookie.
04:32Yeah. Many, I like, and honestly, even if I wanted to stick up for CJ and his performance
04:37last year and everything else like that, I'm like, what the, what the hell are you talking
04:40about? Um, and as far as this is where I was most offended is that by an extreme level
04:45of remember diva level projection that, that CJ should be, uh, what the, what's the word
04:52he used? Offended, offended, offended or whatever, just that he should be furious that Will Anderson,
04:59his close friend, who is one of the best two edge rushers in the league at this point, um,
05:06inarguably a top five guy in the league is that he got paid before CJ did. I'm having
05:12a hard time with this one.
05:13Well, let me, can I add one other point to this as to what makes it bad? And I think
05:16this
05:16is something that you had said the first time we played this skip Bayless, which is he's
05:20ignoring the positions as well. And how good each guy was at what they did last year.
05:26Will Anderson jr.'s contract negotiation probably wasn't all that difficult. If we're being honest,
05:30like he's, he deserves to be the top of the market guy, non quarterback. See if CJ were
05:36to get an extension this year, it's far more nuanced as to what exactly that should, that
05:40should look like. And quarterbacks in general, even when it is very evident that they should
05:45get paid, there's a lot more moving parts to a quarterback contract when it goes to a level
05:50of pettiness, vitriol, all of these things, irrationality, I feel like both of these tips
05:54are, are tied. Yeah. I think the thing though, about the first take, the reigning champion
06:00is just how objectively wrong he is about the style of Will Anderson. He gave a take in which
06:07it sounds like he's never actually watched Will Anderson play football. So he, it sounded
06:12like he was going off of Will Anderson's. I know that wasn't a scouting report coming
06:16out either. If anything, it was a knock against him that he was like people that were down on
06:21Will would say, well, he just runs around a lot and makes a lot of play. Got to play more
06:24under control. Like a frenetic level of hair on fire energy. So no, this, this does not
06:29supplant the current champ. Hey, current champ. Skip kicks out from the pinning attempt of
06:35skip. Yeah. I love when it, we've only done that with a couple of people. I think Stephen
06:39A. Smith's gone against himself once or twice. Yeah. Matt Dogg, I think has done that.
06:43Perk has to have. Who? Perk has to have. Oh, Perk. Yeah. Perk has gone against Perk. Good call,
06:47Ben. Ben, the ombudsman of Take-A-Mania. Thank you. With apologies to the listener earlier this
06:53week that didn't like that we picked on Perk when he said things like that Shador Sanders
06:58is the most influential black man since Barack Obama. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Let's move on to
07:05the next one. So Skip Bayless remains the champ with his first Will Anderson take. This was Joe
07:10Espada getting asked by Chandler Rome earlier this week after Ryan Weiss got shelled in a game
07:17against the Dodgers, I think it was, that Chandler Rome says, hey, does Ryan Weiss need a change
07:26of scenery implying down to the minor leagues? Where is he going to go? Scenery where? Oh,
07:37come on. Come on. No, no. I know, but don't, don't, don't, don't try to play GM. No, that's
07:42we, we got it. We got to help him through it. Maybe it's here. Maybe it's the minor leagues,
07:45but you know, let's not just start pointing one bad outing because we could go down the list
07:52of guys that we working through this and we have confidence and faith that he could do
07:56this, but let's not get down that path of change of scenery.
08:00Dude, that thing is, that thing is seven. That's not your call. Sorry. That thing. I'm talking over
08:06some of the worst parts of it. That's not your call. He knows that. Yeah, he knows it's not his
08:09call. That's like seven bad takes wrapped in one take. This one, we were waiting to see what would
08:14happen because, because Espada was acting like it was the worst question in the world that somebody
08:20went after a horrible, after a fifth horrible performance in a row, whether you might send him
08:25down to the minors, Espada acts like that's the, the most egregiously bad question and that Chandler
08:32is somehow trying to play GM. And 12 hours later, they sent Ryan Weiss down to the minors. I just,
08:40I'm just more, I'm like, I'm more confused about this than anything else, but just because of the
08:47perfect symmetry of the way this all laid out in which, if anything, Espada acting like Chandler
08:54asking the question was him trying to play GM, well then you just went ahead and gave a vote
09:01of confidence to Chandler as your, as your GM, because that's what the GM would do. Chandler
09:05Rome should be the GM of this baseball team. I hate to do this to Espada. I hate it. I
09:09feel
09:10bad about it. But it's the new champion. It's the new champ. Espada. Joe Espada. Boy, have you
09:18told me at the beginning of the year that Joe Espada would hold the Take-A-Mania title? Joe Espada
09:22never says anything that's at all controversial or anything or whatever. The one moment he
09:27chose to get testy with Chandler Rome. Yeah. He was just one, he was wrong in like seven
09:33different ways. It's crazy. If that thing was seven bad takes wrapped in a bad take, it
09:37was bad. Hopefully there's still got another couple opportunities for somebody else. We'll
09:41see. Yeah, we'll see. This one was from yesterday. This one may just hit, hit me close to home
09:46because Dabo Sweeney, the coach at Clemson, takes a shot at my alma mater. But this is Dabo Sweeney
09:52doing what he does best these days, which is complaining about the transfer portal, the NIL
09:57money, basically the environment and how the college game has shifted against what he would say
10:05against Clemson. We always got to, you know, have a chip on our shoulder. I mean, because I mean,
10:11we're, I mean, it just is what it is. We don't have the alumni base that some places have. We
10:16don't have, um, some of the things that, that some of the schools that we've played and had
10:22to compete with over the years have. It's just the way it is. But I've always like, I mean,
10:25we're three and one against Ohio state. We're four and two against Notre Dame. I mean, Notre
10:30Dame has their own TV station. They, they make their own rules. They print their own money.
10:34They got like a money machine in the backyard or something.
10:37Okay. Yeah. All right. I don't even care about that. I don't even care about the Notre
10:42Dame part. Yeah. I know you do. Yeah. But I, you could have left that out and just pointed
10:47out that Dabo Sweeney had the ninth, ninth highest NIL collective money last year. Right.
10:55More than Indiana. Right. I just, I don't, I don't understand, you know, and I'm maybe,
11:00oh, I'm sorry. Is your conference as tough as some of the other conferences the team's playing?
11:05Yeah. I don't understand how we can get up there and act like they're the victim in all
11:08of this somehow. And if we bring Notre Dame into it, all right. Yeah. But Notre Dame can't recruit
11:13the same, the, from the same pool that Clemson recruits from. No. Because of the academic stuff.
11:18That's right. I just, yeah, I don't, I got no appetite for Dabo Sweeney crying victim. Okay.
11:23But is that worse than Joe Espada's seven little miniature bad takes wrapped in a, like pigs in a blanket?
11:30Well, there's two things that go into this. One thing really, I feel bad for Joe Espada. Okay.
11:36I don't feel bad for Dabo Sweeney. I got no man. College football coaches playing victim
11:42is one of the most annoying things on earth. Yep. And especially when you're doing it while
11:47still raking in a boatload of money from other, uh, in your NIL collective and acting like you
11:54guys are the poor kids on the block or something. What do you got? Uh, Dabo Sweeney. New champ,
12:00Dabo Sweeney. Not to, not to pile on, but his other bad take in there is the whole Notre Dame
12:05has its own TV network thing. Like that was a take back in like the mid nineties when not all
12:10the
12:11games were on every channel everywhere on everybody's phones. Like they make less, they make less money
12:17from TV than Clemson does with their NBC contract, you know? So that's, so that's just not to pile on,
12:24but I'm going to pile on with Dabo. All right. So the last one here is Draymond Green, uh, kind
12:30of
12:31dissing Charles Barkley. I thought maybe Seth, a good thing to do would be to play what maybe pushed
12:37Draymond to this place. Um, Charles Barkley, this is Charles Barkley. This is not the take that's up
12:43for take a mania. This is Charles Barkley. I think kind of pushing Draymond's buttons saying,
12:48Hey, the run with golden state is over. Well, it's over for the warriors. There you go. I mean,
12:53no, no, no disrespect. No, no, no disrespect. It ends. It ends for every old team. You have your run.
13:04You get old. Y'all let clay go. You and Steph on the backside of y'all careers. Uh, it,
13:10it just passed
13:11your bye. Y'all had one of the greatest runs ever. If, if you think you're not, you didn't,
13:17you're not in the playoffs. You're not going to make, you think you're going to get healthier
13:21for next year. You're just going to get older. That's no disrespect. You guys have one of the
13:25greatest runs of all time. If you want to compete, you're going to have to leave there. If Steph wants
13:31to compete, he's going to have to leave there. You're going to have to make that decision. What if they
13:35bring the right pieces in? They can't bring the right pieces because they don't have no cap space. Okay.
13:40So Charles spitting some truth here at Draymond Green. Things I feel like Draymond has kind of
13:45acknowledged, uh, that it's kind of over for this group of warriors. Yeah. I feel like we played a
13:49clip a week or two ago where he basically said that. So it might be over. He said he was
13:52talking
13:53about Steve Kerr possibly leaving, which ended up happening. Um, so with that as the prelude,
13:58here is Draymond Green's attempt to, I guess, kind of distract Charles here, you know, and, and,
14:05and, and take a butt, take a jab at him. Like Draymond feels like he got jabbed at.
14:09Always is. Sports, listen, sports are for young people. You hope to have a great long career,
14:17but sports, nobody wins when they're 37, 38. I bet you said what you said. I want to hear if
14:24he believes what you're talking. Yeah. I mean, I think the goal is just to not look like you in
14:30the Houston Rockets uniform. Yeah. It is, it's ultimately the goal for us. Like we don't want
14:34to, what does that look like? Did you see it? I'm just asking. I saw it. Okay. That's kind of
14:42funny because Draymond was like six at the time or something like that. I saw it. I saw it. I
14:48watched
14:48it. So, so the other thing about that too, Seth, and, and, you know, we played this yesterday,
14:54so we hashed this out a little bit is he's just wrong. Charles, Charles is era. Nick Wright had a
14:59great video on this yesterday, like 11 minutes on this yesterday. That was really, really well
15:04thought out and good. It's what Nick does. And he pointed out like Charles's rocket years,
15:10which were his worst, were better than Draymond's best years statistically. Yeah. It's rain culture.
15:17Right. Yeah. Draymond couldn't ever look like any version of Charles Barkley at some point,
15:23which I, I don't think he was trying to, I, why do I calling him old and I know, I
15:29know,
15:29I know, I know, I know. I feel like I want to give Draymond a break, which is not something
15:33that
15:34I naturally ever want to do. It's that when you get on that show, especially, and I think maybe
15:40you're trying to match, match the kind of banter that they typically have on that show. That was
15:45his meager attempt at it. Yeah. He just, man, you got to come in throwing heat and be, and, and
15:51actually know what you're talking about. If you're going to try to play that. Charles is among the
15:56most self-deprecating athletes on television ever. Charles does not, Charles, Charles likes
16:01being the butt of the joke sometimes. Yeah. But the joke needs to be good. Right, right,
16:06right, right. Yeah. And I almost out of, out of, I am almost out of mercy. I feel like everybody's
16:12been crushing Draymond for this and there's always something to crush Draymond about. Um, this,
16:17this though, I feel like it's going to be kind of painful where I think a lot of people are
16:20probably trying to tell Draymond that, yeah, he's got a huge future as one of these commentators
16:26or whatever. And I don't, I don't know if that's his role. Like he's not, he's not one
16:31of the most electroflyingly witty guys that a lot of the things that he gets notoriety for
16:37is just either insulting somebody or saying something bombastic or a lot of times just
16:41something wrong. Um, and there's a lot of money to be made in saying things that are wrong.
16:45Sure. As long as you do it entertaining. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So, um, no, I can't, I can't,
16:51I can't. I'm with you on that. Yeah. I'm, I'm, I agree with that one. Yeah. This is a victim
16:55of
16:55him trying too hard. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, and, and, and, and bad takes it's
17:00like when people, when people just get like, I don't know. Yeah. He was wrong about Barkley's end of
17:06his career, but you're right. It doesn't, it doesn't, uh, it doesn't, uh, supersede Dabo. It just
17:10didn't pop. It didn't pop. Yeah. This is more awkward and uncomfortable than in popping.
