Seth and Sean discuss some stories with more buzz than the actual NBA playoffs: Ant Man dapping guys up with 8 minutes left, Shams "spoiling" the MVP, and Jaylen Brown getting out over his skis trying to take on Stephen A. Smith.

00:00So these are the things, Seth, that had people very worked up over the last couple days.
00:05Anthony Edwards in Game 6 against the San Antonio Spurs.
00:13It was the elimination game in that series on Saturday
00:17where Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves, big star, their franchise player,
00:23in a game where the Timberwolves were losing an elimination game at home
00:27by about 30 points at the time, I believe,
00:29with about eight minutes to go.
00:31He gets taken out of the game and walked over to the Spurs bench
00:37to give them their congratulatory handshakes and dap-up that is customary,
00:43typically at the end of the game.
00:44He did it during the game.
00:47Here's what it sounded like.
00:49Here's a couple people's takes on it, and then we'll give ours.
00:53This was Dirk Nowitzki on the Amazon Prime Studios show.
00:58So being shown the footage of Anthony Edwards dapping up and congratulating the Spurs
01:04while there's still eight minutes left to play in the game.
01:07So we're going to unpack some of the things that Ant said there,
01:10but here is the moment where he said he was just giving them the respect they deserve.
01:14Eight minutes were left in the game.
01:17Tim, your reactions to this moment?
01:19I've watched the NBA and been a part of it for a long, long time.
01:22I've never seen this.
01:23A guy walking into the huddle with eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter
01:27and dapping up the entire team.
01:29Too much for me.
01:31Obviously, you can do that after the game and show plenty of respect.
01:35That was a little strange for me.
01:37Okay.
01:38So Dirk Nowitzki says, kind of strange.
01:41Yeah.
01:41It was...
01:43What do you think of that?
01:46I thought...
01:47I guess I just...
01:48I kind of figured it's like, all right, Anthony Edwards is just one of these weird dudes
01:52that kind of doesn't...
01:53Just kind of doesn't go by the normal guidelines and norms of the way people behave.
01:59I didn't know...
02:00Without knowing the whole backstory or anything,
02:03I didn't necessarily think that it was the worst thing ever, but I don't know.
02:07Yeah, I didn't either.
02:08Like, I watched it.
02:09It was...
02:11It looked strange, you know, for him.
02:13And the Spurs seem to be caught a little off guard by it, too.
02:16Yeah, yeah.
02:17In doing that.
02:18So it's...
02:19Inarguably, it's unorthodox.
02:21We haven't seen guys do that before.
02:23This was definitely one of those things that, once again, illustrated, I think,
02:27the line between the current players and the retired players.
02:30Yeah.
02:30The retired players all seem to hate it.
02:32It's like, no, you wait till the end of the game.
02:34The game's not over yet.
02:35Your coach is still trying to coach you and things like that.
02:37The part for me, and it's...
02:39Like, honestly, if I put football standards to it,
02:43I would be livid.
02:44I would actually be incredibly PO'd.
02:49And just, like, because I kind of...
02:51I don't know.
02:51Like, I don't want you conceding a game until there's, like, the last play,
02:55until the final kneel down, necessarily.
02:58So that's the part where I just...
03:00I guess when I see stuff like that, I kind of chalk it up to, like,
03:04all right, I guess basketball is just a little different.
03:05It's different.
03:06Well, they even just...
03:07But when you hear guys like Nowitzki or Udonis Haslam or other guys just talk about,
03:12yeah, no, this is messed up.
03:14That's where you see, okay, it's messed up.
03:15It's messed up.
03:16I think the other thing, too, it's a little bit...
03:19I'm glad you brought up football just because I was curious what the football culture would
03:23think of that.
03:24The logistics of a basketball court make it a little easier to do that, too.
03:28Like, the bench is right there.
03:29You're getting taken out.
03:29The guys are 10 feet away from you.
03:31That would be something if a player walked...
03:34Like, CJ gets sacked for the sixth time in a game, down by 30, with six minutes to go.
03:40You know he's getting taken out for Davis Mills, so he trots over to the other sideline to
03:44dap up a few of the guys.
03:45This is what Udonis Haslam said.
03:47As a leader, I would not have walked down there and shook their hands.
03:50As a leader of my troops and my guys, I would not have shown that weakness.
03:53The game is not over.
03:54I've got eight minutes left.
03:55I've still got smoke coming out of my ears.
03:57Let me calm down for those eight minutes.
03:59Yeah, and you know, maybe it's an individual thing, too.
04:01Haslam was one of those guys when he played basketball.
04:04Like, he was an energy, physical, angry player, you know?
04:09And so, I could totally see that.
04:11Here's Chandler Parsons kind of taking up for Anthony Edwards.
04:14We all like Ant, right?
04:15Like, we consider him, like, a brutally honest, unfiltered...
04:18100% the person.
04:18Like, because if LeBron, and Schiff, shout out, was just mentioning, if LeBron did it with
04:22eight minutes left, like, he would get absolutely crushed.
04:24It would be the end of the world.
04:25But we look at him differently.
04:25To be honest with you, though, I didn't think twice about it until I saw all the backlash.
04:29Oh, it's so much backlash.
04:30Like, I swear, I was like, oh, that's just Ant being Ant.
04:32You're right.
04:32It is the person that I think has the impact of the situation.
04:37Like, I literally just saw that.
04:38I was like, oh, and then I saw all the stuff that happened afterwards.
04:40I think your brain just went...
04:41You know what?
04:41It was kind of weird that he did that.
04:43Yeah, the clock really says eight minutes.
04:45Yeah, so I'm kind of...
04:48The biggest thing I agree with in that cut, Seth, was Beatle saying that if LeBron did
04:53this, it would have dominated the talk the next day.
04:55I think the whole thing about Anthony Edwards that's weird, though, compared to a guy like
04:59LeBron, which is like, LeBron has no self-awareness about, like, anything that LeBron does.
05:08And he's just in a completely different world, for one, because it's also LeBron James.
05:15Anthony Edwards is kind of known as an eccentric, offbeat humor, just a different type of dude.
05:22He's a free spirit.
05:23Yeah, he's a free spirit.
05:24And I think that's where those guys get a pass, partly because, like, okay, yeah, they
05:27don't operate by the same norms and rules as the rest of us do.
05:31And when do you pick and choose when you like that guy, or how he's a little bit different
05:35or a little bit quirky?
05:36Some guys are just quirky.
05:37I am, yeah.
05:38That's what you do.
05:39I am team Chandler Parsons on this one.
05:41I was the same.
05:42I'm like, I'm watching it.
05:43I'm going, okay, why is this on my timeline?
05:45What am I watching here?
05:46Oh, okay.
05:47That's what happened.
05:48And knowing full well there would be an over-the-top reaction to it on social media, I didn't have
05:52a huge problem with it.
05:54Second one, these are things that were, until last night, had more buzz going than the actual
05:59playoffs in the NBA.
06:00Okay, Shams Sharanya revealing that SGA, Shea Gildas Alexander, was going to win the MVP
06:06award at 6.30 in the morning on Sunday morning, which kind of thieved the announcement from
06:11the Amazon Prime crew.
06:14They were supposed to announce that on the Prime broadcast on Sunday night of Game 7 of
06:18the Cavs and the Pistons.
06:19Yeah.
06:20But Shams found out and reported it and tweeted it out, and everybody got upset that Shams
06:28was kind of hijacking the NBA.
06:30Not everybody, but people did.
06:32People got upset about this.
06:33The Prime crew had some fun with it, actually.
06:35Here is the Prime crew telling Shams to basically get a life.
06:40All right, now, just to be clear, the official announcement is happening here.
06:44Dirk and Steve, you all both won MVPs, but I don't remember Shams spoiling it way back
06:49then.
06:49Hmm.
06:50I don't think he was a real man.
06:51Shams, right?
06:52He was a baby then.
06:54What are we doing, man?
06:55It's Sunday, Shams.
06:56Go to brunch, you nerd.
06:58Come on.
06:59That was...
06:59There are other things to do.
07:00Yeah, that was Blake Griffin, the non-MVP on that set.
07:03Crunchy nerd.
07:04Yeah.
07:06I know, listen, the NBA is not allowed to get mad at stuff like this because so much
07:10of the NBA, especially, is fueled by these Nuggets and insiders.
07:15Shams.
07:16Shams, Shrania, Woj before him.
07:17Yep.
07:18Like, that's their entire ecosystem now.
07:20You can't...
07:22You can't...
07:23The lady does protest too much.
07:24That was petty.
07:26Yeah.
07:26They were petty about it on there.
07:27They're like, well, since Shams spoiled it, you know, this is where the...
07:30official announcement is going to take place.
07:33Yeah, like, the NBA is the league that embraced not worrying about television anymore because
07:38it's a social media world.
07:40And now, all of a sudden, they're like, oh, boy, we got over our skis on that one.
07:44Because it turns out we really need this TV money.
07:47Twitter ain't paying nearly like NBC would pay.
07:50No, and Shams, who we spoon-feed all these things, is now taking Nuggets and reporting
07:55them, as is his job.
07:57Yeah, yeah.
07:58Okay.
07:58I'm team Shams on this one.
08:00I am, too.
08:01I'm team Shams.
08:02So you and I agree on both of these so far.
08:04Now, wasn't there a theory that he had accidentally scheduled the tweet for 6.30 a.m. instead of
08:08p.m.?
08:08Yeah, he debunked that.
08:09He said, no, I'm a reporter.
08:11He went on McAfee yesterday and basically said, no, I had it and I reported it.
08:20That's where...
08:20Remember, Schefter got a lot of crap for announcing Tom Brady's retirement before Tom Brady himself
08:25did.
08:26Yep.
08:26And I'm in that same boat where I'm like, all right, look, Tom Brady's got to do a better
08:31job of battening the hatches on his personal inner circle.
08:34All right, somebody in Tom Brady's camp that, you know, dished when they shouldn't have dished.
08:38I'm not mad at Schefter.
08:39I'm mad at the person who Tom Brady has confidence in who let the cat out of the bag.
08:45All right, this last one, the third one, the three things that had more sizzle than the
08:48actual NBA playoffs going into last night.
08:53This is the feud that was too big for the petty cast today.
08:57There was too much for the petty cast.
08:59Jalen Brown is going to war with Stephen A. Smith right now.
09:02Now, Jalen Brown, Celtics forward, who is...
09:07It's really interesting just from afar to see how his whole deal is getting processed
09:13right now.
09:13Because he said some things right after their season ended against the Sixers to where,
09:18one, he was complaining about Joel Embiid flopping, which looked lame to do it right
09:22after the game.
09:23Did it on a press conference and in his Twitch.
09:26And the other thing he said was that this was his favorite season that he's ever had of
09:31his career, they've won an NBA championship before.
09:35Yeah, yeah.
09:35And Jason Tatum missed a bunch of the year also this year.
09:39So people are reading into that like, oh, you got to be the guy.
09:42Yeah, you got to be the guy.
09:44But the bottom line is Jalen Brown, Stephen A. Smith has been critical of all of those
09:48things with Jalen Brown, of him saying all of those things.
09:51Jalen Brown went on his Twitch a couple nights ago, basically said, bleep you, Stephen A. Smith.
09:57Stephen A. Stephen A, Stephen B, Stephen C. Like, my offer still stands.
10:07You want me to be quiet and stop streaming?
10:11Well, I want you to be quiet and get off these networks.
10:16Because you're not using your platform to do real journalism.
10:19You're using your platform to use clickbait.
10:22You're using your platform to, let's go back and let's use example A.
10:26Okay.
10:27So this is what...
10:28I mean, nobody's accused Stephen A. Smith of doing real journalism in a long, long time.
10:32Oh, no.
10:33My pearls.
10:35Oh.
10:35Yeah, yeah.
10:36No.
10:36Yeah.
10:37Sometimes when...
10:38It's the athletes, a lot of them, too, because they're not in the media until they have their
10:43own Twitch or whatever.
10:44They get confused about the word journalism sometimes, I think.
10:46Stephen A. used to be a journalist.
10:48He's not anymore.
10:49He's a hot take debate artist.
10:51He's a hot take spewer.
10:52On first take, yeah.
10:53So then what he proceeded to do after that, Seth, after that cut we just played, was play
10:58like four or five clips of Stephen A. on first take, saying things about him, and then proceed
11:03to try to debunk each of them.
11:05Yeah.
11:05Here was Stephen...
11:06So Stephen A. gets wind of this, and just...
11:08It's like blood in the water for the Sharks.
11:10Here's Stephen A. coming back.
11:12It's a little long, but it's good.
11:13Stephen A. going on Mob Boss on Jalen Brown right at the beginning here.
11:17Jalen Brown, be careful what you wish for.
11:20You really want me to start reporting on that level?
11:23You understand?
11:24Locker room?
11:26How the organization might think about you?
11:29How the city may feel about you?
11:31How Jason Tatum may or may not feel about you?
11:34Sneaker deals?
11:35Endorsement deals?
11:36The list goes on and on.
11:38The season is over, bro.
11:40Bro, you on Twitch trying to do what I do and talking about me needing to step away.
11:47It makes no sense.
11:50I'm not being disrespectful.
11:52I'm simply making the point that it is not wise after 24 hours of having your season over
11:59in the first round for you to be coming out talking about that's your favorite season.
12:03It ain't the smartest thing in the world to do.
12:06I wasn't trying to be disrespectful.
12:08I was trying to sit up there and look out by letting you know this is not a good look.
12:14It's not wise.
12:16That's all.
12:17And I would have respected Jalen Brown more, Big Perk, Jay, had he come at y'all, had he
12:22come at everybody who said exactly what I was saying.
12:26But evidently, you understand, when you're talking about clickbait and all of that stuff,
12:32somebody told you one of the best ways to get it is to bring up my name.
12:37Yeah, yeah.
12:38There it is.
12:39Yeah, no, 100%.
12:40This is the funniest thing.
12:42And kids, you'll see this as you go on in your sports viewing experience in life.
12:47It's that every single time somebody says, oh, that's it for Stephen A.
12:52He's not going to step out of this mess that he created.
12:55Or like, oh, he's got to step down after that horrible take.
12:58Like, that's the very sentiment that makes him as highly paid as he is.
13:02That's the fuel.
13:04It's year after year after year.
13:05I can't believe Stephen A. said that.
13:07He's done.
13:08Let's get 20 million tweets about it right now.
13:12Yeah.
13:12Yeah.
13:12Like, that's exactly.
13:13And this is where athletes are at a disadvantage, Sean.
13:16I realize this.
13:18Athletes, most of them, especially the star athletes, haven't spent a whole lot of time in their life
13:23being bullied.
13:24So they don't understand how to deal with a bully.
13:27So when somebody like Stephen A., who has a bully pulpit, where he has just this highly
13:31visible position where he can just insult and bully and lob the cast dispersions and
13:36everything, like, the old athletes are not, the star athletes are not accustomed to, like,
13:44oh, wait, I've got to just not give him any air, you know, like that.
13:48Not give him the attention that he wants.
13:50As soon as you do, the bully is won.
13:52Yep.
13:52So it's a fight that you're not going to win if you care about it.
13:55Now, if he maybe just, maybe Jalen just really genuinely does just want to create buzz and
13:59maybe setting up a, trying to set up a career after media or something, then he's doing the
14:03right thing.
14:03And you should, by all means, be the person that says, Stephen A. ain't walking away from
14:08this one.
14:08Yeah, I guess.
14:09If you're up for the fight, if you're up for the fight, I just.
14:11Well, it's like our one listener that thought we were being mean to Kendrick Perkins.
14:16Right.
14:16No, Kendrick Perkins is in that world.
14:18Yes.
14:18Kendrick knows that a lot of the things he says are ludicrous.
14:22But that's part of the game.
14:23Like, he's that style of sports media personality where he's going to be big and bombastic.
14:29And sometimes he's going to say ludicrous things, but it all feeds the machine.
14:33He loves that he's being talked about on any local show.
14:36Right.
14:37Yeah.
14:37Yeah.
14:37Like, if you sat down with Kendrick Perkins, like, you know, away from a camera and you
14:41went over a list of his takes, he'd be like, oh yeah, that was dumb.
14:43Yeah.
14:43You know, like, he knows.
14:44He knows.
14:45You just throw it out there and some of it's going to stick.
14:48Okay.
14:48So Stephen A. went on for seven minutes about Jalen Brown.
14:51The only other one I pulled was this one.
14:52Because I think this is good advice.
14:54If Jalen Brown is doing what you're talking about, Seth, trying to get into the media,
14:57his setup stinks that he uses for his Twitch feed.
15:01Yeah.
15:02It's, yeah, it's just not, it's dark.
15:04It's not very, it doesn't pop to me.
15:06Yeah.
15:06That doesn't matter anymore.
15:08Well, Stephen, well, here's the other thing.
15:10Stephen A. is old guard.
15:12He's old guard.
15:12But Jalen Brown was also having all sorts of trouble playing the clips of Stephen A.
15:16Yeah.
15:17That's the other thing.
15:17Like, if you're going to clown somebody, you better hit play and that stuff better play.
15:22Yeah.
15:22You know, just the optics of it.
15:24Here's Stephen A. saying, get a better studio, buddy.
15:26Get your ass a studio.
15:28You looking like you in some dungeon in a little room or whatever.
15:31You making $54 million a year.
15:33You're going to make $57 next year, $61 a year after that, $67 a year after that.
15:37You're in the midst of a $304 million contract.
15:40Get a studio with a director and a producer.
15:42Call it up clips of mine.
15:43The computer ain't even working right.
15:45Can't even get the full sound up in there.
15:47Get that together.
15:47That's number one.
15:48Stop being so damn cheap.
15:50You got the money.
15:51Pay it, okay, for a better production.
15:53That's where I'll criticize Stephen A. Smith.
15:55He's old.
15:56The kids don't care about that stuff anymore.
15:58Especially if you're on a live stream.
15:59It's sloppy.
16:00It's messy.
16:01It just doesn't matter like it used to.
16:03So if anything, you get more cred when you're making $55 million a year for keeping it real
16:09and just doing it from your own computer.
16:11People enjoy the technical struggles and everything.
16:15Stephen A. is a little out of it.
16:16But him acting like, who was it that last year said that he didn't know which show that Cam was
16:22on?
16:22Oh, it was Drake May.
16:23Remember?
16:24Drake May.
16:24Stephen A. was incredulous that Drake May wouldn't know who is the current cast of First Take.
16:32I think that's probably the majority of young athletes.
16:34They don't give a damn about First Take other than what they see on their social media feed.
16:38And a lot of times they're not realizing like, oh, this is from First Take, which airs from 8 a
16:43.m. to 11 a.m. Eastern.
16:44Yeah, yeah.
16:45I don't know.
16:46I'm with Stephen A. on that one, but I'm old.
16:48So I agree with him on that one.
16:49I think he should get a better studio.
16:51I think he should spring for a better studio.
16:52I'd say keep it casual, keep it real.
16:54Especially because you make $55 million a year.
16:58Now you can get better at the technical stuff over time.
17:00Oh, you're connecting with the regular folks there.
17:02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:04The audio quality, the video quality, the actual set, it just doesn't matter as much as it used to.
17:09No, but learn how to press play on a video.
17:12Which is part of the process.
17:13He's going to be doing that.
17:14Stephen A. is just being mean at that point.
17:16He's being a bully, which is something Jalen is going to have to get used to.
17:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:21I kind of liked it.
17:22I don't know.
