Seth and Sean see if the worst takes of the week from Lou Williams, Robert Saleh, Colin Cowherd, Mark DeRosa or Kenny Atkinson can dethrone reigning champion Stephen A. Smith in this week's Take-a-Mania.
Transcript
00:00Sports Radio 610 presents Pain and Pendergast.
00:03I like bumping in for Take-A-Mania with that Vince McMahon theme music.
00:07That gets me fired up in the last hour of the week.
00:09Take-A-Mania, bad takes of the week.
00:12Try to take down the champ from the previous week.
00:14Seth, you were out last Friday, so I took the liberty of crowning a new champ last week.
00:22So Dabo Sweeney is no longer his crybaby ass complaining about NIL and the transfer portal.
00:28He had a bad take, yeah.
00:30Notre Dame, they print money there.
00:34Got beat by Stephen A. Smith, saying that this goes back to the conference semifinals
00:40when Victor Wimbanyama got ejected in Game 4.
00:47Speculation he could be suspended for Game 5.
00:49He was not, spoiler alert, and the Wolves have gone to lose the series to the Spurs in six games.
00:56But prior to Game 5, Stephen A. Smith was saying, hey, maybe the Wolves want Wimbanyama out there
01:03because he's so skinny and they can abuse him.
01:06How do you know he don't have a problem with it?
01:09How do you know they don't want Wendy on the basketball court tonight?
01:14They might want it, even though he's 7'5".
01:17You keep saying 7'7", he's 7'5".
01:19But they might want him.
01:21They might want him out there.
01:23You know what I'm saying?
01:24And Big Burke.
01:25Especially because, again, this is not the diesel.
01:27If there's somebody like Shaquille O'Neal walking around 330, 340, you know what I'm saying?
01:33And dunking on your mug, that would be different.
01:35But because of how skinny he is, you know what?
01:38You might have some cats that might want him out there.
01:40As great as he is, they might want him out there just so they can make sure he feels them
01:45a little bit tonight.
01:46You never know.
01:48I love that.
01:51And Perk would go on to tell Stephen A. he's crazy.
01:54He would have 27 points in Game 5.
01:59Yeah, he's like 27 and 17, if I'm not mistaken.
02:02126 to 97, yeah.
02:05Yeah, they lost by 29 points.
02:07Minnesota somewhere in Game 5 was like, oh, our strategy of having Wemby out here
02:14is not working out the way we thought it was going to work out.
02:17We lost by 29, but we got several good elbows in on his skinny little torso.
02:23I thought surely with Wemby playing against us, we'd be better this time than we were before when Wemby was
02:29playing against us.
02:30Right, right.
02:31The previous three games, four games.
02:34So that was a bad take, and it took down the champ.
02:36So that is the champ heading into this week.
02:38All right, so we'll see.
02:40I don't know if any of these are going to be good enough to take down Stephen A. Smith, but
02:43let's give it a go.
02:45This is the Michelle Beatles podcast that has Lou Williams on there, Chandler Parsons on there, a couple former Houston
02:52Rockets.
02:54Nick Wright had a take this week that at no point was Kobe Bryant ever the best player in the
03:02world.
03:03You know, that early in his career, that he was, by the time Kobe became an all-star, it was
03:09Shaq.
03:09He wasn't even the best player on his own team.
03:11Yeah.
03:12And then Shaq, you know, Shaq aged, but aged right into the age of LeBron, and then for the remainder
03:19of Kobe's career,
03:20LeBron James was the greatest player in the world, which I don't think is a really horrific take.
03:25It's a very defendable take.
03:26You're saying somebody's not the absolute best at something, their second best.
03:30Like, that doesn't seem crazy to me.
03:32Boy, they took offense to this on this podcast, man.
03:35Beatle and particularly Lou Williams couldn't even speak at the beginning of this thing.
03:39I'm going to judge this based on how much virtue signaling there is here based on the fact that Kobe
03:43is dead.
03:44Okay.
03:44You know.
03:45All right.
03:45Yeah, here we go.
03:46Who wants to take this first?
03:48Lou?
03:48Because you're smiling.
03:52I'm looking at...
03:54Listen, man.
03:58You go, Chandler.
03:59Oh, boy.
04:00I will say Shaq on these teams, I would think, were the best player on those Lakers teams.
04:05Shaq 2001, Shaq, I think, is, like, the greatest player of all time.
04:07I think he's the most dominant player of all time.
04:09That being said, Kobe Bryant was...
04:11No, I got it.
04:11I'm sorry.
04:12I got it.
04:13Got your thoughts together?
04:14Go ahead.
04:15In 09...
04:15That's not where we were going with this.
04:16In 09...
04:18In 09, when he won MVP, and then he came back the next year in 2010 and 11, and he
04:24won a championship
04:24with guys that they said that they wouldn't be able to compete at that level.
04:28Kobe Bryant was the best player in the world that year.
04:30I don't care what the stat said, any of that, from a standpoint of putting fear in guys and making
04:36the most of a roster that he had
04:39and was able to go out and get a championship with that.
04:41Now, granted, he had talent on there.
04:42Sixth man of the year.
04:44He had power with him.
04:46Kobe Bryant was the best player in the world, 2010, 2011.
04:49And you can make a case for a lot of years like that, whether you like him or not.
04:53So all this Kobe Bryant rewrite history stuff...
04:55What's happening?
04:56I'm sorry for cutting you off.
04:57Oh, sorry.
04:57What is happening?
04:58Why are we doing this?
04:59I didn't have anything positive to say at first.
05:01I took a deep breath, and now I'm...
05:03Okay.
05:03All right.
05:04Okay.
05:04So this is the thing.
05:06Okay.
05:07And I don't want to get into this argument about whether Nick's take was even right or not.
05:11I mean, when Kobe won that MVP, it was sandwiched by the two previous years, LeBron winning the MVP.
05:18Yeah.
05:19And the next two years after that, LeBron winning the MVP.
05:20Well, let me point out, too, real quick.
05:22He was off on his data.
05:23Like, he was off by a year on all of it.
05:25Yeah, yeah.
05:25Kobe won the MVP in 08, and then the title in 09 and 10.
05:28If you're going to come in with an argument like that Kobe Bryant's the best, like you're coming in with...
05:33Have your years right, man.
05:34That's not why it's in here.
05:36Oh, wait.
05:36I thought he was talking about 10-11.
05:37Okay, gotcha.
05:38Yeah, he's just off on all those years.
05:40So, anyway.
05:41Yeah, no, it's not like that was a...
05:43They were acting like it was the biggest insult in the world to say that LeBron James is better than
05:47Kobe Bryant.
05:47Right.
05:48Like, all right, no.
05:49What are we even doing here?
05:50Beatle literally said at the end of it, you could hear, go, what are we doing here?
05:53Yeah.
05:54And, yeah, there's too many moving parts here, given that they're having a bad take in response to a perceived
06:00bad take.
06:01Yeah.
06:01Which probably wasn't all that bad a take, even if you disagree with it.
06:04So, it doesn't win.
06:05Doesn't win.
06:07Doesn't win.
06:08I just want to stick up for Nick Wright a little bit.
06:10They're acting like it was the dopiest take ever, that LeBron was better than Kobe.
06:14I don't think they probably...
06:15They probably didn't like...
06:17They didn't like Nick's tone of voice and the way he framed it more so than anything.
06:20There was commentary at the very beginning that I didn't put in there, just for expediency's sake, where Beatle said,
06:27boy, Nick Wright must have a new PR person, because he sure has a lot of hot takes out here
06:32these days.
06:33Yeah, as opposed to back before when he was just a wallflower.
06:36Right.
06:37Yeah.
06:38Exactly.
06:39All right.
06:40So, okay, this next one, I don't think this one's going to win.
06:45But, here's Robert Sala.
06:46You don't know the hornet's nest you're kicking here, Sean.
06:49Okay.
06:49Yeah.
06:50Okay.
06:51Here's Robert Sala, Tennessee Titans head coach, commenting about what's changed in the building.
06:57And he said that he's gotten rid of the seed oils in the cafeteria.
07:00Yeah.
07:01No.
07:01Well, 100%.
07:03You know, I thought our...
07:04You know, one of the first things I think we did here is get rid of all the seed oils
07:07in the building, which I think the players appreciate.
07:10I know they've...
07:12We've...
07:12You know, Miss Amy has allowed us to attack the budget and get the players a better variety.
07:17I think our...
07:18I'll put our staff...
07:20And, I mean, I've been in six different buildings, and I put the staff up there with the best of
07:26them.
07:26I mean, the product they put out in the cafeteria daily is outstanding.
07:31Okay.
07:32I don't give a crap about your seed oils, man.
07:34Yeah.
07:35I don't care.
07:35Well, somebody asked him a question about the seed oil.
07:38That was...
07:38And he got rid of it.
07:39Was the question specifically about the seed oil?
07:41Yeah, I think so.
07:42Oh, okay.
07:42It sounded like somebody asked, like, hey, we heard you got rid of the seed oil or something.
07:46Oh, okay.
07:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:47Okay.
07:48I thought he volunteered that.
07:50Yeah, no.
07:50And the whole thing about seed oil is that it just...
07:53It's one of those deals that it's like...
07:55It's somehow...
07:56It's just an annoying topic to talk about, where there's a lot of outsized opinions on
08:02TikTok or from the medical community that are just, like, sometimes there's just...
08:06You got to have a nuanced discussion about all of this.
08:09And I feel like, yes, there's good reasons to get rid of seed oil.
08:12There's some that are overstated.
08:13But I don't want to touch it, A, the topic, and B...
08:18It's that polarizing, huh?
08:20Oh, yeah, yeah.
08:21Okay.
08:21I have no idea.
08:23Oh, yeah, I know, I know, I know, I know.
08:24Yeah, like, I didn't know what seed oils were until yesterday.
08:27Yeah, I don't want to get it...
08:28Look, I'm not well-versed enough.
08:31I've looked into it myself because I see the stuff on TikTok.
08:33You know on TikTok where everybody tells you what the medical establishment doesn't want
08:37to tell you is something that your doctor actually did tell you last week.
08:42But still, yeah, yeah.
08:45I don't because I get curated Danhausen videos to me on TikTok.
08:49I live in a great little world where everything's Danhausen on TikTok.
08:52Oh, no, it's a big old thing, man.
08:53It's a big old thing.
08:54I'll take your word for it.
08:55It does not win, I guess.
08:56No, and the whole thing about it is that if a lot of players are like, look, if you get
09:01rid of seed oil in your diet, whether you probably get rid of a lot of other stuff, too,
09:05like bad, like genuinely bonafide bad stuff.
09:08So I appreciate that if his players are concerned about it, then those guys are paying attention
09:12to what they're eating, and it's probably a good...
09:14It's a good move whether he thinks it's all that urgent or not.
09:17Okay, so that does not win.
09:19Not surprised.
09:20This next one is Colin Cowherd, who claims that the NFL is punishing Sean Payton, his
09:27good friend and Denver head coach, by giving them a very difficult first six games.
09:32They've got, I think, six playoff teams in their first six games.
09:35Of the year, here's Cowherd.
09:37Now it's interesting.
09:38Who are they punishing?
09:40And I believe this.
09:42I'm not a conspiracy guy, but I believe this.
09:44I think Sean Payton has a mixed relationship with the league office.
09:49He's taking shots at quarterbacks.
09:51He's taking Russell Wills.
09:52He's taking shots at coaches.
09:54NFL does not like friendly fire.
09:57Zip it.
09:58Look at Denver's schedule.
09:59They're punishing them.
10:01The first six games...
10:02That's the toughest six-game schedule I have ever seen in my life, and I'm a geek on this
10:07stuff.
10:08I am a nerd on schedules.
10:10I've never seen anything like that.
10:12At Chiefs, Jags, Rams, at Niners, at Chargers, at Seahawks.
10:16They could have thrown an Arizona game in there, a Panthers game in there.
10:19They could have thrown that Steeler game in there, the Raider game in there.
10:24Nope.
10:25Front heavy.
10:25With Bo Nix coming off a surgery.
10:28I believe...
10:29And I...
10:30Again, I'm not a conspiracy guy, but I think Sean Payton has irked a few people.
10:35He's been outspoken.
10:36A little friendly fire sometimes in the league.
10:39If I had a dime for every time Cal Heard prefaced his takes, it seemed like conspiracy
10:43takes by saying, I'm not a conspiracy guy.
10:46Oh, really?
10:46He says it a lot.
10:47He says it a lot, I feel like.
10:48I'm not a conspiracy guy, but here's a conspiracy.
10:50Here's the conspiracy theory of the day.
10:52I'm going to go look that up today.
10:53I'm going to search on Cowherd Conspiracy on Twitter.
10:56Sponsored by tinfoil, big tinfoil hat.
10:58Yes, sponsored by Reynolds Rap, yes.
11:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:04I think that, okay, this is where he lost me, is honestly, what is he talking about in
11:11terms of Sean Payton irking people in the league?
11:15Like Nathaniel Ratliff or not?
11:17What was the name?
11:18What was that?
11:18Nathaniel Hackett.
11:19Hackett, yeah.
11:20Nathaniel Hackett?
11:21I was like, is that, that's the most notable one I can remember.
11:24Like he's, other than like Bounty Gate, which goes back a long ways, that if the league wanted
11:30to exact vengeance on Sean Payton for Bounty Gate, you know what they did?
11:35They suspended him for a big chunk of time.
11:38Yeah.
11:38He's like, yeah, what are you, what are we even talking about here?
11:41Yep.
11:41This is what Cowherd always does.
11:43He sneaks, he sneaks a really big part of the argument.
11:48He sneaks it right past you.
11:49Yeah.
11:50Like he just, so in the beginning, he states a false premise, which is like, Sean Payton
11:54has really rankled a bunch of people at the NFL.
11:57And in your mind, if you don't object to that, you're like, oh, well, gosh, it does make sense
12:01that given that he's rankled so many people in the NFL, that boy, this might be, but no,
12:07but no.
12:08No, he lied to you at the beginning and then built an entire argument around it, and you
12:14didn't have time to say, well, hold on a second.
12:17Is Sean Payton known as a guy who's reviled in league circles because he's always castigating
12:22so many people?
12:23Is this worse than Stephen A. saying the Timberwolves wish that Wemby was on the floor for a game?
12:28No, that was just one of the most god-awful, horrendously bad things.
12:34I get so tired of Colin Coward's rhetoric.
12:38You know why?
12:39Because it's the same thing politicians and political commentators do to dupe people, and
12:44I hate that it's so effective.
12:47I hate that it makes him so successful by just lying to people.
12:53All right, I want to make sure we get this one in.
12:54We don't get a lot of bad baseball takes.
12:56Alex, this was the MLB TV crew, Robert Flores, Mark DeRosa, Dan O'Dowd, a former executive,
13:05Robert Flores, obviously the host, and they were talking about the Astros earlier this
13:09week.
13:09So this is kind of in two chunks here.
13:11I feel like it sets up better this way.
13:13This is the crew saying, hey, not a total rebuild.
13:16Don't be late to the party, Astros.
13:18Few small moves, and you can get right back in this thing.
13:20I'm looking at the basement dwellers right now, and I'm saying to myself, okay, Rockies.
13:26Rebuilt.
13:27Yeah.
13:28Angels, I don't know what they're going to do.
13:30And then you're looking at the Houston Astros, and I'm saying to myself, if they did a reimagining,
13:37they have big-time star-type players, they could redo this thing with two or three trades
13:43and bring in a completely new hole.
13:46Yeah, you know, I think it's imperative.
13:47Pause right there, because DeRosa is the main culprit in this thing.
13:50So DeRosa is saying, hey, they got a couple star players, they make a couple of moves,
13:54and they can kind of get right back to where they were.
13:56When I initially heard that, Seth, I thought, okay, they have some star players that they
14:01can still build a team around by making some moves on the margins.
14:05That's what I was expecting.
14:07What we got from DeRosa when he was asked, like, okay, so what are the moves, was this.
14:13Yeah, you know, I think it's imperative.
14:15If you could put deals together with Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Payne, you start to imagine,
14:22I was sitting there last night, like, you imagine Yordan in the Yankee lineup.
14:25Yes.
14:26How dare you?
14:27You imagine Jeremy Payne.
14:28Robert, you watch him on a nightly.
14:29What's your take?
14:30I think.
14:31Okay, that's enough right there after it says Hunter Brown.
14:34He's reimagining the freaking Yankees lineup.
14:37He's not reimagining the Astros.
14:39And the part is I was going to maybe bail him out a little bit because he, you know,
14:43maybe kind of just talked himself into a corner and was doing that thing where you just,
14:47you kind of think your way through a take.
14:49Like, so when he's saying it doesn't have to be a complete teardown, he didn't realize
14:52what he's getting into.
14:53But then he said that he was thinking about it last night.
14:55Yeah.
14:56And, yeah, and it did.
14:57It sounded like he was trying to rebuild.
14:59He was trying to make the Yankees even better than they already are.
15:02Yeah.
15:02That was more his goal in this segment.
15:04Yeah.
15:05I'd like, and if he had caught it at one player, if he had said Yordan, even if he had
15:10said Hunter Brown, but if it was just one player, then maybe I could have, I could have
15:15seen how that wasn't a teardown.
15:17But when you start off with Yordan and Pena.
15:20And he's still screaming Hunter Brown while guys are talking.
15:23And he's saying, and Hunter Brown.
15:24Yeah.
15:24Yeah, that's not, this is the problem.
15:27Yeah.
15:28This is the problem.
15:29Yeah.
15:30Stephen A. Smith said that the Minnesota Timberwolves might prefer having Wemby on the floor
15:38because they can push him around.
15:40Right.
15:40It's a horrible take.
15:41I don't know if anybody's ever going to beat that.
15:44Did he?
15:44The only thing that's going to save Stephen A. at some point is that he didn't deliver
15:49it with his classic Stephen A. panache.
15:52Yeah.
15:52So it's not as, it's not as scintillating.
15:55But no, this is, this is not the defeat Stephen A.
15:58All right.
16:00I got one left.
16:01This is a quick one.
16:02This was, this was Kenny Atkinson, the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
16:06This is after game one, after James Harden got cooked for 15 points in the fourth quarter
16:11by Jalen Brunson.
16:12Think about James.
16:13I'll just defend him.
16:14He's a good isolation defender.
16:15Okay.
16:16That's the whole take.
16:17Yeah.
16:17Thing is with James, I'm going to defend him.
16:19He's, he's a good ISO defender.
16:21That's the whole take right there.
16:23I'm just throwing that in at the end.
16:24I mean, I mean, he is like, yeah, that's the problem.
16:26He just, but he was doing it after a game in which he just got torched.
16:32He's a good post defender.
16:33I've never thought of him to be a good guy.
16:35Like if, like if you've got a guy dribbling at James Harden, like he's never been great
16:39at staying in front of people.
16:41Yeah.
16:41I guess.
16:41Well, the whole thing is, uh, in his Houston years, he was in the 88th percentile defending
16:47isolation.
16:48Like it's, but with him, it's always with James, there's just more to the story and it's
16:53like the lapses when he's not, when he's not a good defender.
16:56He's an, a really bad defender, but when he is a good defender, he's actually, yeah,
17:01he's a really good defender.
17:02Yeah.
17:02Um, that, that, that game the other night, he was, he was not a good, I said, that was
17:06not a great time to say that after the game, I would say.
17:08But yeah, not a, so I, I understand where he's coming from.
17:11And, uh, so I don't, uh, it's coach defending his player.
17:14Yep.
17:14Yep.
17:15Yep.
17:15All right.
