00:00The champion from the previous week is Kendrick Kins, who had this to say about Shadur Sanders after Shadur's first start, in which he beat the Raiders a couple of weeks ago.
00:11Shadur Sanders is the most powerful black man since 2009. You know what happened in 2009? That's when President Obama got elected in office. He's the most powerful black man since 2009.
00:30You said you were sitting there watching a game in your house, and what you did, you ran with the TV.
00:35Yeah, right.
00:36Right?
00:36What was you doing, DB?
00:38I was cheering.
00:38You was cheering like a motherf***er when Shadur Sanders is on the field, and when I say powerful, powerful because it's two sides of it, right?
00:48Think about it.
00:49Okay, you got the black community.
00:51He bringing the whole black community together.
00:53I ain't ran across one black person that said one bad thing about Shadur.
00:59We want him.
01:00And guess what?
01:01Not one, because he has the balance.
01:03He has the balance of that I'm arrogant, but I'm humble, too.
01:08Yeah.
01:08He got fun with this.
01:09And he having fun with this.
01:10And on top of that, y'all want me to fear it ain't going to happen.
01:15Yeah.
01:15He talking s***.
01:16I love that s***, bro.
01:17He's the most powerful black man in sports.
01:20No other, no other.
01:22Matter of fact, s*** black man.
01:24He's the most powerful player in sports.
01:26It didn't feel quite as powerful after they lost 26-8 to the Niners this past weekend.
01:31It didn't feel like it.
01:32And yet, it's his ignorance of recent American history that bothers me most.
01:39Sports or otherwise, right?
01:41This is, yeah, it's not even a bad sports take.
01:45But even if we restricted it to sports, if you're talking about just things that I don't even want to get into all the actual,
01:50I don't want to get into all the actual very serious and real-life things that black men either in sports or out of sports have done.
02:00I just can't stomach listening to this take anymore.
02:04So he's on the brink, Sean.
02:07Yeah.
02:08Okay.
02:08And I don't...
02:09You know what it's turning into?
02:10Yeah.
02:11It's not an hilariously bad take.
02:13It's kind of a disturbing take at this point.
02:15Yeah.
02:15I hadn't thought about it in a week, and now I'm actually a little bit pissed off.
02:18Text message.
02:19Text message.
02:20It angers me as a black man every time I hear it.
02:23This message literally makes me want to see Shadur fail.
02:26Same person texting that.
02:28Yeah, no, no, no.
02:29That's the other problem.
02:30Yeah, and the part, like, unlike Kendrick Perkins, I don't want to speak for all black men here.
02:36But, like, I don't know.
02:38We know some black people who don't like Shadur Sanders.
02:41Right, right.
02:41So, like, Kendrick Perkins saying, like, he hasn't met a black person that doesn't...
02:45It's just...
02:46It's disturbing me more than anything, Sean.
02:48Yeah, yeah.
02:49I feel like this is a...
02:50I feel like it's Kendrick Perkins trying to pull a Stephen A. Smith and angle his way
02:54into getting into crossover talk.
02:56Oh, politics.
02:57He's going to be a political commentator or something.
02:59All right, but maybe so.
03:00Maybe so.
03:00All right, so that's the champ right now.
03:03These are the challengers.
03:05Ironic, you mentioned Stephen A. Smith.
03:07Here was Stephen A. Smith earlier this week saying that the Clippers, in letting Chris Paul go,
03:15disrespected Chris Paul.
03:17How the hell do you do this to Chris Paul?
03:19Now, this is a future Hall of Famer who's come there for the last year in his career.
03:26I don't give a damn what's going on with the team.
03:29They're trash right now.
03:30We understand that.
03:31They have the worst superstar in the sport.
03:33It could while let it, who is a talent when healthy, no doubt, but does nothing to promote
03:38his team nor the game of basketball.
03:41The absolute worst superstar that you could possibly have.
03:44And from what I've been told, the only person that really talks to him is CP3 because nobody
03:48else talks to him.
03:49Okay?
03:50Just leave him alone.
03:51That organization right now is a mess.
03:54It's a mess.
03:55Okay?
03:56I know...
03:56And we know it ain't coaching because Ty Lue the coach.
03:58Ty Lue the coach.
03:58Ty Lue know what the hell he's doing.
04:00Now, Jeff Van Gundy being there, we know Jeff Van Gundy knows the stuff, but he's old school.
04:04Stuff like that.
04:04I get it.
04:06I don't...
04:06I have not spoken to CP3 yet, but you know I will.
04:09Okay?
04:10I haven't spoken to a few of the Clippers.
04:12They know they'll be...
04:12They know they'll...
04:13If I don't get a call from them, they'll be getting a call from me within the next 24
04:17hours.
04:17Okay?
04:18Because I've already been calling this morning.
04:19All right?
04:19I'm just on the air right now.
04:20I missed two calls during the show.
04:22I'll deal with that later.
04:25Okay, so...
04:26So it's on here, Seth.
04:27It's on...
04:28It's in the ring right now.
04:30It's in the ring right now with Perk because two things.
04:32One, I don't know.
04:34Like, I have a hard time feeling sorry for Chris Paul over anything.
04:37Like, oh wow, he got cut in the middle of the night.
04:39Oh, well, what are we going to do?
04:40Chris Paul averaging three points a game.
04:42The name dropping at the end is something else.
04:45I know, but the funniest thing about Stephen A. Smith is I'm starting to give him more bad
04:50take credit, which means, you know, criticizing him for it, yet also lauding him for it because
04:55it's such a bad take.
04:56He's just more and more, like, shooting down his own arguments within his argument.
05:02Like, he's resenting the counter-argument, I think, as a way to make it look like he's
05:07being even-handed or something, but, like, actually destroying his own argument and doing
05:11so.
05:12So he goes on to talk about how it's just such an egregious way they would treat him,
05:15but then goes on to, in an effort to name drop and take future credit for people he's
05:22going to talk to, points out that he's completely ignorant about what's actually gone on.
05:27Yeah.
05:27I just don't, I'm so torn over all of this because I don't even know where the take is.
05:32Right.
05:32I don't know whether he's, um, if anything, I want to criticize him for the, it's not even
05:37name-dropping, it's name-dropping in advance.
05:40Yeah.
05:40I'm going to talk to this guy.
05:41Yeah, yeah.
05:42I'm going to talk to that guy.
05:42They know they're getting a call from me.
05:44Yeah.
05:45Does it beat Kendrick Perkins?
05:47Uh, no, it does not.
05:48Does it beat Kendrick Perkins?
05:49Does it not beat Kendrick Perkins?
05:49What are they doing?
05:49Call her!
05:51By the way, Seth, by the way, you don't have to pick one of these to pick Perk.
05:55If we want to vacate the title after this segment, we can do that.
05:58I'm almost thinking about if there's any kind of race baiting going on just to
06:02leave it out, because it gets to, yeah, this is supposed to be a fun exercise.
06:06Yeah.
06:07And, uh, race baiting, not always the most fun thing to address or discuss, you know?
06:12No, no.
06:12It's rarely fun.
06:13I don't even notice that.
06:14Yes.
06:15The fun times.
06:15It's not always the easiest way to hold on to your job, either.
06:18I'll admit, the fun times I've had race baiting are few and far between.
06:22That's every, sometimes I just sit around on the porch waiting for somebody to race bait
06:26me.
06:27Like, could I do something with my life this afternoon?
06:31Hey, you!
06:31All right.
06:33Hey, Grandma!
06:37Let me get your opinion on this.
06:39Tell us about the good old days.
06:42All right.
06:43Here's Steve Sarkisian.
06:47Here's Steve Sarkisian.
06:48Hey, Grandma!
06:50You know who are our kids, Dayton?
06:53Oh, my God.
06:53And then make something up.
06:55I love this job.
06:57I love it so much.
06:58Steve Sarkisian.
07:00Here's Steve Sarkisian, head coach of the University of Texas Longhorns, on the field after one of the
07:07Aggies, lobbying the college football playoff committee, which I understand him doing, but
07:14he goes a little over the top here.
07:16You tell me, that team's undefeated, number three in the country.
07:19A lot of the pundits out there think they're the number one team in the country.
07:22We just beat them by ten.
07:24What kind of statement do you think that made to the committee?
07:26Well, I think this, if you really look at the body of work and you look at the Southeastern
07:31Conference and what we have to go through every week, you look at the non-conference schedule
07:35we play to go to Ohio State in week one and lose by seven when we outgain them by nearly
07:39200 yards, we got a really good football team.
07:42And it would be a disservice to our sport if this team's not a playoff team when we went
07:46and scheduled that non-conference game.
07:48Because if we're a 10-2 team, it's not a question.
07:51But we were willing to go play that game.
07:53So, is that what college football is about?
07:55Don't play anybody and just have a good record?
07:58Or play the best and put the best teams in the playoff?
08:00And we're one of the best teams.
08:01Okay, so there's a couple things here, Seth.
08:03One, obviously, the whole, it'd be a disservice to the sport.
08:08Settle yourself down, Steve Sergei.
08:10Disservice to the sport.
08:11Number two, the part where he says, I didn't notice this the first time, but he said that
08:15was the number three team in the country, which is true.
08:17And some pundits say that's the number one team in the country.
08:20Stark, I would be willing to bet some of those same pundits whose opinion you're lauding
08:25right now also think that you don't deserve to be in the playoff.
08:28I would bet.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Oh, yeah, yeah.
08:30Some pundits.
08:31You know what?
08:31Oh, I'm glad you pointed that out.
08:33Now, you having to explain to me why something is a bad take is usually a bad sign for its
08:37prospects.
08:38But I'm glad that you did point that out.
08:40Yeah.
08:41You don't get to cherry pick like the pundits being a bunch of idiots versus, oh, the pundits.
08:46But these pundits actually, yeah, it's kind of like when you go cherry picking for the
08:51medical advice or the doctor, you know, that I'm seeking a second opinion on any kind or
08:56any kind of topic like in the real world where it's like, well, look at this one doctor here
09:00says that smoking is actually good for you.
09:02Right.
09:02Yeah.
09:03He's like one out of a thousand.
09:04What are you talking about?
09:06Yeah.
09:06The other one out of like a hundred thousand.
09:09The other thing, too, that just bothers me in general about this whole like, well, we had
09:12just scheduled Akron instead of Ohio State ignores the fact that if you had beat Ohio
09:17State, boy, think about where you might be.
09:19You might be getting a bye right now.
09:21Like the whole argument of we shouldn't have scheduled this team because we lost.
09:24You sound like a blackjack player.
09:26I shouldn't have down at the table because I lost.
09:28Yeah.
09:28I guess I shouldn't have fought this heavyweight fight.
09:30Right.
09:31Right.
09:31I wasn't.
09:32I clearly wasn't ready to be heavyweight champion, but I should be heavyweight champion.
09:35Yeah, well, or just even if you're competitive in the endeavor, ignoring the fact that if
09:40you had won, there's upside to it.
09:42I think it's a one-sided.
09:43I just think it's a flaw.
09:43I think you're a little too close to the issue and your nerves are a bit raw from having
09:50taken a beating all season long over your New England Patriots like Notre Dame schedule.
09:56And whenever somebody's defending themselves or their team, I give them a little bit of a
10:02break.
10:02So, no.
10:02No, he doesn't win.
10:03That's fine.
10:03That's fine.
10:04That's fine.
10:04Let me do it!
10:05Call her!
10:06All right.
10:09Kendrick Perkins was basically, like, holding Colin Kaepernick down in the mud as he made
10:13his take.
10:14Yes.
10:15Right.
10:17And I still wouldn't put Colin Kaepernick up where Kendrick Perkins was saying.
10:22Here was Odell Beckham Jr.
10:23There were people that wanted this one in the take-a-mania this week.
10:26I don't think it's going to win, but this is, if you haven't heard it yet, Odell Beckham
10:29Jr. talking about how hard it is on the Pivot podcast, talking about how hard it is to
10:34hold on to $100 million.
10:36If I don't have a dollar in my account right here today as we speak, I'm going to be straight
10:41for the rest of my life.
10:43No question.
10:44Right?
10:44I don't think everybody is in that.
10:47And when you've sacrificed your whole life to get here, and you're like, yeah, I played
10:5010 years in the league.
10:51And I always explain this to people.
10:53I'm like, bro, you give somebody a five-year, $100 million contract, right?
10:56What is it really?
10:57It's five years for 60.
10:59You're getting tax.
11:01Do the math.
11:02That's 12 a year.
11:04You know that you have to spend, use.
11:06Save.
11:07Save.
11:07Save, invest, flaunt, whatever, however, just being real.
11:13I'm going to buy a car, I'm going to get my mom a house, I'm going to do, everything costs
11:16money.
11:16So if you're spending $4 million a year, that's really $40 million over five years, eight a
11:23year, you know?
11:25And now you start breaking down the numbers, it's like, that's a five-year span of where
11:29you're getting eight million.
11:30Can you make that last forever?
11:32And you always hear the people who ain't us, and ain't been in the position, like, oh,
11:37well, that would last a lifetime.
11:40This is where I'm torn with this, because I just, he phrased it so poorly.
11:45There is truth to it in that people don't realize how quickly you can mismanage that
11:53money.
11:53For sure.
11:54But he's framing it almost like, no, it's actually really hard to make $40 million last
12:00a lifetime, when it's not at all.
12:02If you do it the right way.
12:05His framing of it was just so poor.
12:08And he just, and he tried to make it a, boy, oh, I had a hard, because you and I had a good
12:15long discussion after that, where I tried to put it, I tried to put it in more, like,
12:19realistic terms.
12:20I think, like, a lot of young men especially, it's the young, it's the young people themselves
12:24that get the money that don't realize themselves, like, that this doesn't last forever and
12:29everything.
12:30But to act, he kept going back to, it's really hard to make $40 million last a lifetime.
12:36His math started.
12:37It's really not.
12:38It's really, really easy if you do the thing, if you handle it right.
12:41His math started getting goofy, too, when he was talking about the $4 million into $40
12:45million.
12:45I was like, okay.
12:46Well, then, you know, spend $4 million a year.
12:50Like, it's actually pretty easy to not spend $4 million.
12:53It's incredibly, it's remarkably easy to spend $4 million a year, but it is just as easy
12:59to not spend the $4 million per year.
13:01All right, so where are we on this one?
13:02I'm torn on this one, because I feel like his heart was in the right place.
13:05Yep.
13:06And he just, he framed it and phrased it so awfully that I actually feel sympathy for
13:11him, because I think his heart was in the right place.
13:14Okay, so then.
13:14So, no, he doesn't.
13:15He loses.
13:16All right.
13:16Kirk's still the champ.
13:18All right, this is, we'll do this quickly.
13:19He's in there criticizing people who would say that somehow it's easy to make $40 million
13:25less than that time.
13:26Like, let's find the balance here.
13:29Yeah.
13:29This is Manny Diaz.
13:30He's the head coach of Duke, who plays Virginia in the ACC title game tomorrow, which is the
13:34most whack bleep ever, that Duke at 7-5 is playing for the ACC title.
13:40If Duke wins, there is a chance, a decent chance, that the ACC doesn't get a team in the college
13:46football playoff, because it's the five highest ranked conference champs that get in, and
13:52there's a decent chance that if Duke wins, both the Sunbelt champ and the American champ
13:57are ranked ahead of Duke.
13:59Manny Diaz is indignant.
14:00He said, no, no, no, no, no.
14:02The ACC will always have a team in the pool.
14:04What is Duke's best case for college football playoff inclusion with a win on Saturday?
14:10I would say this.
14:12The Atlantic Coast Conference champion will always be in the college football playoff.
14:15It's going to happen this year, regardless of what happens on Saturday, it's going to
14:18happen every year.
14:19That's just the way it's going to happen.
14:21We have four Power Four conferences.
14:22The competition in this Power Four conference is unlike the competition in anywhere else.
14:26That's not the disrespect to really good teams that are not in the Power Four conferences,
14:30which we played two this year and lost two this year.
14:33But week in and week out, in terms of who you play and how you have to prepare, that's
14:37why there's a difference.
14:37That's why it's called the Power Four.
14:40Go ahead.
14:41So you don't think that you need to make a case that you're in, in your mind, if you
14:46win?
14:47Not today.
14:47Not today.
14:48The case we have to make is on Saturday night at 8 o'clock.
14:50That's all I'm concerned about right now.
14:52It'd be foolish for me to start making a case other than the fact that we have to beat Virginia.
14:56But just the fact that we'd have beaten Virginia would be better than any other win that could
15:00be compared from anybody that we're in any hypothetical argument against.
15:04So that's all of our focus right now is we're going to beat Virginia.
15:07We'll let the politics and take care of itself after that.
15:09Okay, so the ACC will always get a team in.
15:12If Duke wins, they're 8-5 with an ACC championship.
15:15And they're not even in the top 25 right now.
15:17Yeah.
15:18There are a group of five teams that play on Friday and Saturday that are ahead of Duke
15:22right now.
15:23Yeah.
15:24I think if Duke wins, he's going to be proven wrong.
15:28I think that's to your corollary about it's a coach sticking up for his team.
15:32And I guess by proxy, his conference, this one feels like it might fall short.
15:36And taking shots at Notre Dame as well.
15:40I didn't hear anything.
15:41Any shot at a schedule is a shot at Notre Dame.
15:43Okay.
15:43Yeah, I didn't beat Notre Dame.
15:44For the record, I didn't interpret anything he said as a shot.
15:47No, it's all right.
15:47Well, when did Notre Dame play Miami?
15:50That was...
15:50First week of the season.
15:52That's right, yeah.
15:52It was August.
15:53August 31st.
15:53So like the wear and tear of the season at that point didn't matter, obviously.
15:57Right, right.
15:57Um, uh, I'm just thinking from a true of Miami and Notre Dame.
16:01Yeah.
16:01No, he doesn't beat Kendrick Perkins.
16:03Okay.
16:03Can he do it?
16:04Call her!
16:06Oh, and it's...
16:06This last one is quick.
16:07This last one is quick.
16:09This is Cam Newton.
16:10I...
16:10They were making some point on first take during a segment about Tomlin.
16:15Yeah.
16:15I don't know why O.J. Simpson came up in the conversation, but he did.
16:20Last person to put up this much yards, God rest his soul, was O.J. Simpson.
16:24Mm-hmm.
16:26Respectfully.
16:27And you give up that?
16:28Not with Tomlin at the helm to say, oh, you can't stop nobody.
16:32Okay, we can stop right there.
16:33That's...
16:34It was the...
16:34No, no, no, yeah, wait, what was the performance?
16:37I don't even know.
16:38It's the...
16:39The reason this is in here is he gave an O.J. Simpson, God rest his soul.
16:43I...
16:44I...
16:44Yeah, no, and it was a...
16:45I can't remember...
16:46I don't know that everybody wants O.J. Simpson's soul to necessarily be rested.
16:49That's all.
16:49Well, no, and I can remember the, uh, when he said it, I can't remember who he was talking
16:53about, but the...
16:56There have been other rushers, like O.J. Simpson doesn't currently hold the record for all-time
17:00rushing.
17:01Well, they had just played the Bills, so it might have been a James Cook.
17:04Oh, the last time the Bills, like anybody, so he's...
17:06That's where he's bringing up the O.J. Simpson.
17:08Yeah, yeah.
17:08So they...
17:09Um, yeah.
17:10Uh...
17:11Boy, it's hard.
17:12Uh, anytime...
17:13Anybody...
17:13Anytime brings up, like, I don't want to put, uh, you know, God into the Take-A-Mania
17:18champ or anything.
17:18God and race.
17:19But I also don't want somebody to just hide behind, uh, you know, like, hide in a church.
17:24Right.
17:25And make a way, like, find sanctuary in the church.
17:27That's right.
17:28Uh, despite the horrible crimes they've committed.
17:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:30The horrible crime being Take-A-Mania champion.
17:34Yes.
17:35Uh, this is what I follow.
17:36This falls into, uh, the category of odd, and because it did involve the Bills, um, that,
17:41no, he does not...
17:42He does not win.
17:42Okay.
17:43So we've got to make a decision on Perk.
17:46Now, Perk's still in.
17:47I'm getting uncomfortable with it.
17:49I'll give it another week.
17:49Give it another week?
17:50Okay.
17:50To think about it.
17:51Okay.
17:51Okay.
17:51Okay.
