00:01Ambulance service is patient breathing.
00:04She's extremely dizzy and can't stand up.
00:07Hang on, she's going to fall over.
00:09My mum's in a lot of pain in her face.
00:12She can't swallow food.
00:14I don't know what is wrong with that.
00:16I think she's having a breakdown.
00:20Righty ho, let's get them bad boys on.
00:24West Midlands Ambulance Service looks after almost six million people.
00:28I love the fact that not just every shift's different,
00:31every job's different.
00:32Do you remember everything that's happened?
00:35It looks like you're having a heart attack.
00:39Saving lives and making a difference every call out.
00:42Is she breathing normally?
00:45Water variability of Hollywood.
00:48Embedded with eight emergency crews.
00:51Could be anything, couldn't it?
00:52OK, OK.
00:54Filming simultaneously across the region.
00:58Time is everything in our job.
01:00Just relax.
01:00Relax for me.
01:01Can you open your mouth as wide as you can?
01:05Capturing life.
01:06How's your vision?
01:07You got it?
01:08On the front line.
01:10I go to work every day and I make a difference.
01:21Do you reckon it's going to get cold tonight?
01:24Stay warm.
01:24Do you reckon?
01:25Yeah.
01:26See I'm going for cold because there's no clouds in the sky.
01:30What did you have for team Morgan?
01:31I had burgers.
01:32What did you have?
01:33I had jack potato.
01:35Beans.
01:35Oh, vile.
01:37Is that what you have on it?
01:38What would you have on a jack potato?
01:39I would have cheese.
01:41That's disgusting.
01:42Are you joking?
01:43I feel sick from what you have.
01:45That's vile.
01:46Literally can't even look at you.
01:47Yeah.
01:50Just booking on Jack Tienen and Sharnie Jones.
01:52Thank you, sweet.
01:53I'll book you on.
01:53Have a good shift.
01:55Thank you very much.
01:56Same to yourselves.
02:07Are you more of a text person or a phone call person?
02:11I'm a bit of a nightmare with my phone.
02:14But I do prefer to text.
02:16I prefer a text.
02:17But then I'm awful at text and it takes me at least six or seven working days for me to
02:21get back to you.
02:22Working days.
02:23Working days.
02:23Not on the weekends.
02:24The one that gets me and it really winds me up when someone texts you.
02:28They send you one message and then another, and then another, and then another.
02:31Yeah.
02:31And then it's like just one sentence.
02:33What did you do in one message?
02:34One paragraph.
02:35I completely agree.
02:36You know when you're doing this back and forth text and people are replying super quickly
02:39and then they reply to your text before you finish doing your little seven texts
02:42and you can't keep up.
02:44I'd just rather ring them.
02:45I'd get sore thumbs.
02:47You know what?
02:47The best conversation I have is with my dad.
02:49I'll ask him something or I'll tell him something and I'll just get a thumbs up.
02:53Thumbs up.
02:53Oh, yeah.
03:09I started buying the pick and mix cups.
03:11Oh, yeah.
03:12Oh, I'm addicted.
03:14You have to like tactically stack it though, don't you?
03:15So that you can get the full max amount of sweets.
03:17Like, yeah.
03:18Fist pump and lower to fit more in.
03:21And then you strategically buy the jelly beans to fit in the holes and the gaps.
03:26And then the lid is always like that curved.
03:28Pick and mix from the shops is a skill and an art form.
03:33It just sounds like you do it like probably on the daily from the technique that you use.
03:38No.
03:38It's just a technique built up over years of practice.
03:40And how long would one of those cups last year?
03:43Not long.
03:44Look at the size of me.
03:46I've now upgraded from the small cup to the middle cup.
03:49Ooh!
03:50It's only going one way, slippery slope.
04:01do...
04:03...ambulance Bayish or breathing?
04:06Yes.
04:08Are their conscious and away?
04:10They're conscious but not away.
04:12So she responding to you?
04:14No.
04:16Do you have any seizures now?
04:33A seizure will always come through as a cat one because you don't know what condition the patient's
04:37going to be when you get there you're automatically thinking are they going to be struggling breathing
04:42could they go to cardiac arrest because of it or respiratory arrest and a neurological damage
04:48ultimately because when you're having a seizure you're not getting enough oxygen to your brain
04:52so it's making sure that we're there we can try and stop it as soon as we can
05:03hello hi mate i'm mark this is amy hello
05:13stacy can you hear me stacy
05:19open your eyes for me every drink she had tonight
05:23bear half a bottle just doing your blood pressure okay
05:32when 29 year old stacy had a seizure tonight her friend anthony called 999
05:40let's take your temperature hello stacy sorry 37 8. she's a bit toasted come on stacy
05:50come and have a sit up for us please
05:55as mark and amy begin to treat stacy a man enters the flat from outside
06:01hey hey hey hey hey hey if you can do what you do i'll do what i'll do i was
06:10quite concerned and
06:11quite scared of this other man of what he was going to do
06:18this is one of those strange jobs where alcohol is obviously influencing people's behaviors
06:25what are you doing sir no no no no no no don't please
06:32i thought it was very odd that this man was drawing on this patient's face he claimed to be
06:37the patient's friend but you wouldn't draw on your friend's face when they're unwell
06:44so she should we help you up mate come on ready you can lean on me right then can you
06:52tell me
06:52what's happening what's happened this evening you feel sick you have been sick you had a bit too
07:01much to drink this evening come on more lovely should we roll over
07:10there we go come on let's have a sit up
07:16paramedic team paramedics i've been to you before
07:21yeah i'd previously been attended stacy's property a few months earlier so i was aware of stacy's
07:28alcohol dependence so i knew it was going to be difficult to communicate difficult to get stacy to
07:34do what we wanted because of the alcohol come on my lovely that's it have a bit of a walk
07:41over to the
07:42sofa there we go keep on going keep on going plank yourself on there there we go wonderful there we
07:50go
07:52trying to take this jumper off have you got anything underneath
07:55because you you you've got a bit of a temperature arms up in the air like we just don't care
08:04there we go that'll cool you down you've got one can i stick these on your wrist
08:12thank you stacy any allergies bab
08:17hospitals hospitals fair comment we have the same feeling right nice and still for me
08:27so quick question do you want to go to hospital do you not want to go to hospital no
08:37okay when she was on the floor was there any like shaking at all yeah yeah yeah okay and she
08:44wasn't
08:44induced epilepsy oh got you what's on your medical notes that's all alcohol induced epilepsy is
08:54exactly what it says on the tin she suffers from seizures and sometimes it can be due to
08:59drinking too much alcohol are you sure you don't want to go to hospital yeah sure okay
09:06you sure we can't convince you to come with us i'd advise to try and stay well from the alcohol
09:12if you
09:12can let me just take these off you
09:26you okay
09:30oh that sounded like a bit of a bang when i heard that bang i'm thinking has the patient fallen
09:35over
09:36is she okay is she injured at all ultimately i was hoping that she wasn't having another seizure
09:41what's just happened stacy can you talk to me
09:58you know in england if something's banging like that's really good like oh yeah that those cheesy
10:05chips are banging yeah in the isle of man is that bad it's bad yeah like like oh so i'll
10:10be like those
10:11ish that those chips are banging it means that they're gross and it took me a while to like
10:17figure that one out they'd be like why are you pulling that face for and i'm like it's banging it's
10:23gross they're like what they're no banging over here means great yeah i don't even know if people use
10:29that anymore no it's outdated we're too old for banging even just places like within england it's just
10:39so different isn't it yeah something like stoke if you say oh just go up the bank like people won't
10:44know what does that mean it's up a hill you know what i mean it's just at the top of
10:47the bank
10:55ambulance services are patient breathing yes what's the reason for the ambulance she's extremely
11:02busy and can't stand up hang on she's gonna fall over put me on the floor please sorry she's good
11:09i
11:09think she's going to be sick we're going to a 69 year old female dizziness no notes
11:20but it does say union canal i'm gonna guess she's in a barge i can't say i'm the biggest fan
11:27of barges
11:32immediately thinking how are we going to get them out you can't just you know throw them over
11:37your shoulder and and carry them out that way um hi my name's homie hi which one are we that
11:48one
11:48there's that one there but you're probably easier i just have to see from this bit okay
11:52a neighbor helps kira and brook find the right narrowboat it is quite obviously narrow it's quite
12:00limited am i in the bottom step not oh she's on the floor
12:19oh bless you hi jenny my name's brook and we've got kira as well you're feeling dizzy is that right
12:28yes yes yeah i feel a bit disoriented okay i'm going to be sick yeah oh
12:38paramedics brook and kira are with retired primary school teacher jenny
12:43who's holidaying on a narrowboat when she became dizzy and sick husband nick called 999
12:53so your blood pressure at the minute is okay i know you're feeling dizzy but for us to do some
12:58more assessments would you be able to have a sit on this chair yeah if we give you a hand
13:02up yeah yeah
13:03if you want to just try and swing your legs that's it so they're straight where are we
13:12ready one two three oh oh that's it fabulous
13:19i'm just gonna do your your blood sugars okay one two three
13:26jenny's observations all appear normal but there could still be an issue with her brain
13:32where are we nick one on the boat jump and where's the car the car's just over there okay
13:40do you know what day it is today uh
13:43uh now let me think i want to see if you you can figure it out let me think
13:51well i was going to say 2024 but i don't think that's right not quite
13:57uh what else did you ask me what day it was yeah i don't know to be truthful that's a
14:04good worry
14:06this state of confusion is new for jenny and a worry for her husband nick
14:12did you call 999 yeah what did what happened to me you were on the floor when we got here
14:17oh i didn't
14:18know that yeah did you phone 999 yeah oh my goodness sake
14:28repetitiveness is a bit of a red flag for us in terms of something neurological going on
14:32it doesn't necessarily mean that she's having a stroke but it could be a sign towards something
14:37neurological happening but you're having this dizziness and you've got a little bit of
14:41repetitiveness you're kind of saying a few things again and again i don't know if you're realising
14:46that you're doing it um but i think all of that together warrants a trip up to hospital
14:52and now it's just about getting you out because you're not very steady on your feet are you
14:57we thought maybe it could be that she's having a bleed potentially that is developing as we're
15:02we're spending more time on scene did concern us a bit didn't it just because she wasn't getting
15:07better she was actually deteriorating yeah it certainly amped up the pressure of it's getting
15:11worse we need to get to hospital as soon as possible because we need to rule out that it's not
15:14something going on in her brain that we can't see you ready yeah that's it we'll get you either
15:21side hold on to us it's okay
15:32nice and steady are we at the boat yard yeah we haven't moved no we haven't yet that's it
15:41oh no it's okay take a step and then step onto this one take a step that's it be careful
15:49with
15:49your foot just move that foot a little bit further forward that's it her blood pressure is okay so
15:54we were quite happy with that in terms of her standing and her not like passing out but then
15:58it wasn't just as simple as getting her from her boat onto land it was that we had to go
16:02over
16:03like another boat as well right hold on to me i think you can do that big step that's it
16:11well done
16:12that's all the hard work done with jenny free of the cramped conditions of the narrowboat brooke and
16:19kira can now treat her more easily on the ambulance
16:26what day is it nick is it the day we came on the boat it is yes i didn't know
16:32we came on a friday
16:34we haven't actually sailed anywhere have we no i don't remember anything really right can i have this
16:41arm it's going to give you an anti-sickness okay right i'm going to jump in the front and start
16:47heading
16:47towards stoke jenny and nick were about to start a four-day canal holiday but now she needs specialist
16:55medical treatment so explain to me nick what's happened i don't know i forgot i mean i haven't forgotten
17:05i can't remember right then darling at royal stock university hospital jenny will have scans to see
17:20if her dizziness and confusion are neurological
17:29i have no idea what's going on with her to me screams neurological oh yeah do you reckon it was
17:37a
17:37stroke i don't know it's all very strange wasn't it yeah i'm just glad she could walk because oh my
17:42gosh
17:43i don't think we would have got her off that would have been so hard
17:54what's just happened in starbridge paramedics amy and mark are with stacy who's had an alcohol
18:02induced seizure tonight after refusing to go to hospital she's just collapsed again
18:10okay can you open your eyes for me can i have your finger thank you hello kitty cat come on
18:19then
18:19stacy you okay should you have a sit up again yeah your head does it hurt a little bit
18:28should we help you on to the bed stacy yeah yeah ready ready to stand ready push through your legs
18:35steady stand
18:37that's it
18:41there you go
18:45and you still don't want to come to hospital with us i don't know i don't know anymore
18:52what's happened to me
18:56i think you've had a couple of non-epileptic seizures
19:13what we're thinking stacy
19:18it's entirely up to you mate you're staying here yeah
19:24i thought you'd say that right get some sleep look after yourself all right
19:30look after yourself all right mate no worries at all
19:35in this case i believe stacy needed to go to hospital but ultimately we can't force anyone to
19:41go to hospital if they don't want to go we can't drag them kicking and screaming so in this case
19:46we did
19:47have to leave stacy at home because that was what she wished for
19:53that man was a bit of a joke wasn't he putting that pen all over her face like what was
19:58what was that all about why would you do that no idea
20:16i've got an ambulance centric question for you okay which siren is your favorite
20:23the second siren you know the close together one we will yeah yeah classic
20:33it's like i'm actually there i can't do it the pacer one the last one is just very loud and
20:39very like well it pierces your ears it's not nice to listen to for a while it's useful though it
20:44is
20:51useful
20:52ambulance service is the patient breathing she is okay and what's the reason for the cause
20:57i'm the doctor triaging the call it's a 83 year old lady she's having diarrhea vomiting not keeping
21:05any fluid down not eaten for a few days
21:13they've been allocated a 83 year old female reporting dizziness and she's currently bed bound
21:21with an elderly patient with these kind of symptoms weakness diarrhea vomiting and not eating you're
21:26thinking about their recovery time and how they aren't as able to bounce back from an illness
21:31as there's somebody who's younger would be able to
21:41hiya duck i'm jack and this is shawnee hello what can we help you with sweetheart what's going on
21:48is this your daughter granddaughter do you want your granddaughter to tell us what's going on
21:53um she's very weak like i say she can't eat or drink hit you like a truck has it yeah
21:58pain on the left
21:59side here and to me your stomach does feel fine so when was the last time you had a normal
22:05poo
22:08last weekend okay when was the last time you were up and out of bed tuesday tuesday
22:1683 year old maureen has been ill in bed for three days granddaughter kirsty called her gp and he rang
22:23999
22:25husband bill is by her side
22:29let's have a look at your ticket see what that's doing the best description she's said is she feels
22:34like she's been kicked around with her five stroke city football team i still have city football team
22:39she's gonna pop these stickers on your chest sweetheart you're stuck it's bubbling like anything
22:44i've heard it i've been sitting here and i've heard it you just try and stay nice and still for
22:48me maureen
22:50jack runs an ecg to check maureen's heart let's have a peek of this
22:56you ever been told that you have some extra little heartbeats every now and again
23:01used to have them
23:04that could explain it you have just every now and again you just have a little extra
23:09it just drops it in randomly so they're not that regular can i have a feel of your tummy that'd
23:16be
23:16okay i'll start on this side nothing on there nothing on there so that's all okay that's all right
23:24there there so that's where the most painful bit is okay yeah so your tummy does feel a bit swollen
23:30your pain's right over that side which is like stomach a bit of intestine i can't really leave you
23:36here if you can't get out of bed so i think we have to have a trip up to royal
23:40stoke i decided to take
23:42in hospital because of the length of time that her symptoms had been going on for and we'd hit a
23:47point
23:47where she needed a little bit of outside help from an e department to recover and get back to how
23:53she normally
23:54was now my next question is how are we gonna get you out
24:08we're following eight paramedic crews as they work through the night
24:12responding to emergency calls from across the west midlands
24:19i'm ready for you so we need you like here ideally how can i help you
24:25in stoke technician jack and paramedic sharni are with maureen who's been suffering with vomiting
24:32and diarrhea for three days
24:36almost there maureen you're doing great yeah oh there we go that's it you've landed perfectly done
24:44i don't know if you lean back a little bit for me
24:49when i saw the stair lifts very jolly of me but i thought belter meant that we don't have to
24:54carry
24:54maureen down the stairs so we get her down to the ambulance nice and quickly there you go perfect
25:02ready steady lift i told you that'd be easy didn't i maureen yeah there we go
25:14maureen maureen you did fantastically i bet you feel like you've just ran a marathon you did amazing
25:25how did the two of you meet starting with the case that he does
25:3365 years eh what's the secret
25:40work together yeah at this point in time i don't see myself doing anything for 65 years
25:46but i'd like to find somebody brave and stupid enough to be married to me for that long
25:51hey hey i think we're just about here now maureen
25:56at royal stoke university hospital doctors will help maureen start eating and drinking again
26:02they'll also carry out tests to work out what's causing her pain
26:19so where is she falling where in the house is she
26:22maureen's emergency call was answered here where a team of call assessors are available 24 7.
26:29i have this deep innate feeling that i am doing this job for a reason i really want to be
26:36a part of
26:36something bigger than me i like to think that have impacted that person's life in a positive way
26:44ambulance service is the patient breathing
27:07is it that she's been removed from her house or that she's locked herself out
27:16now somebody's locked it out it's got now slippers now shoes on
27:23it's just got a little top on in the pants it's upsetting i need it it's stressful
27:30and i know i wanted to bring the place for a while let me leave the place because it's bright
27:34okay no we're gonna help her a lot of the time people don't volunteer information on certain
27:42circumstances you can hear it in somebody's voice there's more to this story
27:48she lost any blood from anywhere all her knees are all knocked about and scuffed
27:56so i need some dressing done i need them all bleeding okay has anyone has anyone harmed her
28:04well that's not for me to say okay can i can i speak to her hello hello there my sweet
28:11it's the
28:11ambulance service yes what's been happening tonight i've climbed some branches too well
28:20you've been climbing what you've been climbing some branches
28:26and what were you climbing the fences for
28:33oh you were trying to get into the back of your property
28:40oh you was quite right okay and is there somebody in your property that's that you're trying to get
28:47away from i don't discuss it please in a situation like this where i have suspicions but haven't
28:58directly been told that there may be a risk or a threat there basically you know you need the police
29:05there other cases need a bit more investigation okay when did this happen a couple of hours ago
29:14all right then my sweet so what we're gonna do we are gonna get some help arranged okay so yeah
29:21do
29:21you just need to speak to one of our clinicians so i can arrange some further help okay so we'll
29:27call
29:27back shortly okay all right my sweet you take care bye bye bye bye uh 3638
29:36okay i've put it in there um it's a possible safeguarding more than anything when we refer
29:43a case to safeguarding that usually means that there's a vulnerable person or a vulnerable situation
29:49it's a very wide range of things why somebody may be safeguarded it means this person needs extra
29:57support and they need a safety net and they need a blanket of of help the neighbor she's run to
30:02the
30:02neighbor's house naked from the waist down no shoes but thankfully the neighbor's taken the moment
30:08taken her in and i know it's horrible
30:27oh what a chunky cat
30:32was that a badger oh my god was that a badger or oh it was oh was it a raccoon
30:41i didn't like that that scared me that did that scared me was it a chunky cat it might have
30:49been
30:49a chunky cat or was it a badger i remember it looking us in the eyes and that was not
30:54that must
30:55be why we screamed that was not a cat i don't know what it was i don't want to know
31:00what it was
31:01a wild animal across the road shaking his little booty
31:06it looked as it was like i have no cats
31:11i've never saw a badger before that was terrifying
31:23the patient is breathing but i don't know what is wrong with that okay she awake and conscious
31:36okay what's happening with her at the moment she's just thinking i think she's having a breakdown
31:52female cartoon mental breakdown was there anything else on that just mental breakdown
32:00my thoughts were mental health this could be absolutely anything it could have been a case
32:05where this patient had really injured themselves or someone else so it was just a matter of urgency
32:11to get there police are here
32:15i help you most high

33:09daisy and morgan need to check if the patient is well enough to be taken into police custody
33:16just sit her here for me
33:19the lady was shouting screaming i hail you um to us it was coming across like
33:29some sort of script from the bible and she was just preaching that
33:34i hail you she was chanting it sounded like religious chanting i had never seen anything like it
33:44before
33:44i really struggle with some words i don't know whether it's my accent or my lips or what but
34:08it came out upside down backwards what's that word that everyone struggles to say it's like
34:14anonymously anonymously and non-in-a-n-a-n-o-n isn't this the two n's anonymous a-n-o
34:22-n that's as much
34:23as you're getting from me anonymous anonymously i know what you mean with some words it's how you say
34:30it's like what's the word i like that's what i was about to say with the glittery
34:48picture things at the end and then you turn it and it all falls and it's all different colors and
34:55shapes a collide there we go it's how it is kaleidoscope kaleidoscope kaleidoscope
35:11ambulance service the patient breathing yeah okay what was the reason for the call please
35:16my mom's done a lot of pain she's saying pain where in the face in the face okay and the
35:23back and she
35:24can't swallow food it's got gradually got worse over the last couple of days
35:30right we've got a category two um 90 year old lady chest pain back pain lip swelling difficulty swallowing
35:38and pain so let's have a look
35:44this lady it stated she was 90 and she was in a lot of pain so i think instantly we
35:49started to think
35:49what kind of pain is she in where is it coming from and how much is it affecting her with
35:54obviously her age
36:00hi ducky you're right are you sweetheart i'm nick this is kyra is that hurting you though
36:09let me have a check your pulse
36:10not only how much can youHHHH?
36:1290 year old nova has been suffering with pain in her back and mouth for the past four years
36:19but tonight when the pain became unbearable daughter sue called 999
36:25we'll get all these checks sorted and then we'll make a plan of what we're going to do all right
36:31Every four minutes, this is happening.
36:35And it just comes in like a...
36:37Yeah, then it'll go, but she can't lean on her back.
36:40Pain on her back triggers the pain in her face.
36:44She can't eat a meal.
36:46When it goes in her mouth, she's getting a pain at the back of her tongue.
36:50OK.
36:51It was quite perplexing as to what was going on
36:55with the pain in her face, the pain in her back, how it was related.
36:58So we were quite confused as to what was going on.
37:02When you get this pain, sweetheart,
37:04I know it's really difficult to describe pain,
37:08but what sort of pain is it? Is it burning? Stinging.
37:12It's coming quickly. Are you ready? Yeah.
37:14It's on go, it's coming quickly. It's coming more frequently.
37:17Yeah. OK.
37:19Blood pressure's high at the minute.
37:21Could be because of the pain. That would make sense.
37:23I'm just going to do a little pinprick on your thumb, sweetheart.
37:29Sharp scratch. OK.
37:32Can I pop these stickers across your chest to do an ECG?
37:35Is that all right? Because your heart rate's jumping round a little bit.
37:38Yeah, anything you want.
37:41Nick carries out an ECG.
37:44This will provide a trace of Nova's heart
37:46and might give a clue as to what's causing her pain.
37:50Have you still got your tonsils?
37:52No.
37:52Where's that accent from?
37:55I thought it was from somewhere down there.
37:58Yeah.
37:58You don't sound like a stokey duck.
38:00No.
38:01There's some bumps at the bottom of the left side.
38:05In your mouth?
38:06Yeah.
38:07Are you OK to open it? You can tell your lips are swollen.
38:12Oh, up there.
38:14Looks a bit strong up there, yeah.
38:16OK.
38:17OK.
38:18And under there.
38:19Does it feel sore?
38:20Yeah.
38:21Whenever anybody is in any pain or discomfort in the mouth,
38:25we have to be very careful of the airway
38:27because it needs to be kept clear at all times.
38:29So we have to consider if there's allergic reaction,
38:32any damage.
38:34With Nova, we could see that she was in pain,
38:36but we had absolutely no idea what was causing it.
38:40Let me have a little listen to your chest, sweetheart.
38:44I'm in pain.
38:45I'm starting again.
38:47It's just like it comes in spasms, doesn't it?
38:50We need to get you sorted out.
38:57The rest are fine because she's unable to sing,
39:00so it's just not lacking in breath.
39:04Is that the only...
39:07I know, it's a more to it.
39:10You can sing, but can you sing it a bit quieter, please?
39:13I hear you...
39:14Do a complete opposite hit.
39:18In Birmingham, paramedic Daisy and student paramedic Morgan
39:22are with a patient who's been arrested.
39:25She's allegedly assaulted reception staff and the police.
39:31I think it's just because it's spasms.
39:38We can't see any abnormalities.
39:41The heart rate was a little bit high, wasn't it?
39:43Yeah, it was up a little bit.
39:44We didn't do an ECG to sort of rule out anything to do with that.
39:49But she was quite erratic.
39:51Yeah.
39:52So we would expect the heart rate to be a little bit higher than...
39:54We don't think there was anything medical going on there.
39:56No, not at all.
39:58I'm being checked by ambulance, OK?
40:01I'm being checked by ambulance, OK?
40:02And there's no ambulance.
40:03I'm not a teacher.
40:06Right, so I'm going to take you with me, OK?
40:10Stand up for me.
40:11Stand up for me.
40:13Stand up.
40:14Stand up for me.
40:17Daisy and Morgan's observations show that this patient doesn't need to go to AME.
40:22She can now be taken to the police station.
40:27She is understanding what we're saying as well.
40:29She's acknowledging things.
40:30When you said you can sing, sing a bit quieter, she went louder.
40:34She went louder.
40:35She's stood up when the best.
40:36She's eye contact.
40:38She understands.
40:40Do you want to help me?
40:41We were there to determine whether the patient needed help medically or if it was something that the police needed
40:47to deal with and ultimately we decided that it was something for the police.
40:52She's under arrest.
40:53She's under arrest.
40:54All right.
40:55I don't understand it.
40:56I know.
40:57I know.
40:58I know.
40:58I know.
41:00She's under arrest.
41:01Yeah.
41:02She's done other things.
41:04It was not a normal case.
41:06It was not.
41:07This is not what you see every day.
41:08It was a bit of a mystery in terms of we didn't know exactly what was going on.
41:12We couldn't pinpoint it.
41:15Oh, dear.
41:17I felt so from her arm.
41:19Yeah, I did.
41:20But then also, she knew we were there.
41:23She was acknowledging us.
41:25She knew we were talking to her.
41:28Then what a strange way to be.
41:29I just don't get it.
41:30I don't get why she started doing that.
41:33Like, what is going through her head?
41:44Right.
41:45Plan of action.
41:47In Stoke, paramedics Nick and Kyra are with Nova, who's been experiencing severe pain in her face.
41:55Once we get to the hospital, we'll have a word and explain.
41:59We need the specialist people on the ward that know more about this and they can hopefully start looking at
42:05medication.
42:07We decided to take Nova to hospital due to us not really knowing what was causing this mouth pain and
42:13having a knock-on effect with the back.
42:15More tests needed to be performed so we could get down to the bottom of it.
42:20Right, let's get rid of these.
42:21You can have some Oromorph now.
42:24And then, once we get to the hospital, we'll see what we can try and sort out for you.
42:30Oromorph is liquid morphine.
42:32It's already prescribed for Nova by the GP to help manage her chronic pain.
42:39Right.
42:40You're going to get on here, ducky.
42:41We're going to put a blanket on first.
42:43Wrap your plank, E.T.
42:44It's all right, though.
42:45I'm not going to be riding like a bike.
42:47Otherwise, we'll all be in hospital.
42:49Right.
42:49We're ready, sweetheart.
42:55Right, door.
42:56Right.
42:57So if we...
42:57Do you want to come?
42:59OK.
43:00Breathe through it.
43:04You lean back.
43:07Could you score, out of ten for me, the pain?
43:11Zero, nothing.
43:12Ten being the worst pain.
43:13Well, yeah.
43:14Ten out of ten.
43:17Sometimes it comes on quick.
43:20OK.
43:21Are we happy?
43:22Yep.
43:22But if there's anything you need, please let me know, OK?
43:25Yes, ma'am.
43:26We're not quite the Hilton, but we'll do our best.
43:37Oh, you were the baby, were you?
43:39Yeah, I was born in 1934.
43:42Right.
43:45Oh, really?
43:47I know you're up here.
43:48Yeah.
43:49I love your name.
43:50It's so unusual.
43:52Well, it's there you've gone backwards.
43:57Brilliant.
43:59I really enjoy having a chat and gnat with the patients.
44:02I'm quite a nosy person anyway, but I find people really interesting.
44:05Nova was so lovely.
44:07It was really lovely chatting to her.
44:11Right, then.
44:12There'll be a couple of little bumps, but we'll do it as gently as we can, sweetheart, OK?
44:17At Royal Stoke University Hospital, Nick wants to get Nova seen by a specialist to determine the cause of the
44:25excruciating pain in her face.
44:34Oh, she was a lovely lady.
44:37I know.
44:37It's not nice when they're in so much pain and discomfort and we can't really do anything to help them.
44:43Yeah.
44:44It's really frustrating.
44:45Well, hopefully she gets sorted.
44:47She could be back with, well, at home with her little dog soon.
44:50Yeah.
44:56Nova was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, a condition where nerves in the face get compressed.
45:03She was monitored in hospital for 10 days and given new medication to better manage the pain.
45:11Maureen had a scan that revealed she had an inflammation of her bowel.
45:16She was given antibiotics to help treat the infection.
45:22And after collapsing on a narrowboat, Jenny had scans in hospital.
45:26These showed she hadn't had a stroke.
45:29Doctors diagnosed an inner ear infection that can cause vertigo and nausea.
45:41Yeah.
45:42Next time.
45:42His legs have gone completely.
45:44A man has a suspected stroke.
45:47You know when you closed your eyes then, did you feel like you were leaning to one side at all?
45:51Yeah.
45:52We've only got a very short window of opportunity
45:55that we can help and save and treat that stroke,
45:58so time really is not on our side.
46:00While hiking, a man falls, injuring his leg.
46:04When we got a call saying mountain rescue, we're on scene.
46:07I think our first thought is, where on earth are we going?
46:10Yeah. And how are we getting there?
46:12What we don't want to do is put any more strain on your heart, all right?
46:16And pain from coughing masks a heart attack.
46:19I have to be careful how I explain it to him.
46:22If we put any more stress on the heart that he's already under,
46:24it could be potentially fatal.
46:26Don't get upset. We're going to look after you, OK?
46:55We'll see you next time.
