00:05this time on highway to hell one shot
00:10reliable's balancing act how close are we to that truck
00:13slowly come back comes down to inches oh might just barely do it
00:21big green is maxed out that doesn't sound good that excavator is in there
00:28and aggressive try to get his tracks this way gets down and dirty watch yourselves boys
00:36are we looking up the coast today guys a little slippery in some sections high in the cascade
00:44mountains traffic makes its morning push an old school trucking today through southwest british
00:54columbia the coca is the most important route before the province to transport goods as well as
01:02for people to travel throughout bc let's get going it's a highway that's open 24 7 and
01:10it demands 24 7 attention truckers face a steep grade on their route to the coast
01:20making the zopkius brake check a vital stop
01:24it says brake check you gotta stop
01:28you can go you'll get a ticket
01:31before they descend the mountain pass
01:35did i hear somebody standing in the white boat at zopkius
01:48a little bit icy up top heading to the scene in 50 ton heavy metal reliable towing lead operator
01:57andy column you can handle pretty much anything in this truck it's pretty well outfitted let's go get
02:03done being reliable's leading in their big recovery truck this comes with more pressure and responsibility to
02:14successfully pull everything off yeah tow truck got out of action
02:23nasty
02:27the semi driver misjudged the edge of the road sending a full load of refrigerated pork into the ditch
02:36right at the entrance to the busy brake check
02:42the brake check is where every commercial truck has to come so you know there's going to be heavy traffic
02:46we need to get this done we need to get opened up
02:49how many figures backing up andy in the 50 ton hornet 66 gross 66 gross yeah
02:57is reliable's newest recruit slippery over here dalen golish
03:03it's a fork in there so
03:06everything's loose i had three and a half years up north working on a 50 ton heavy wrecker and
03:11about two years in central alberta
03:14very important not to open up that door it's like a ten thousand dollar fine or something for
03:19them if we break the seal we're just gonna kind of get our feet wet again and see where it
03:25goes
03:25being as we're in the brake check we can't block the road okay so we have to stay on the
03:33side
03:34limited angle on everything they can't stop traffic for the recovery
03:41this thing is right at the entrance of the brake check where all the trucks got to come through
03:45pull up get going buddy and the morning rush we got him over there
03:52it's building it's gonna get busy quickly so we need to work as efficiently as possible to get this
03:58up right in and out this is the best place ever for a wreck watch yourself coming into the brake
04:04check here
04:05i don't like that at all
04:29get into the brain check up here or is it plugged
04:32coming near the coquihola summit we're moving slowly
04:40team reliable faces a semi in the ditch
04:44that poor truck at the entrance to the brake check
04:49we got a load of pork and then you have the weight of everything else there's a lot of weight
04:56in play here
04:58but they can't unload the seat can that sucks or stop traffic figure we'll separate the can from the
05:07chassis pull the chassis and the truck out of the way and then we'll bring the can up
05:14we'll get down there then we're going to undo the locks and take the chassis away from the secan
05:21plan here is to turn the pins so that we can separate the box from the chassis
05:27on a secan chassis you have two pins at the front you have two pins at the back that lock
05:33the can in
05:35yeah the back's off if i can hook to the truck we can pull it forward and off
05:40to fully detach the chassis they'll need a strong pull forward all right
05:48so we're gonna try and get the chassis to come away
05:55makes me nervous fear would be that maybe the trailer shifts a little bit and put somebody in jeopardy
06:03look at that
06:25if you want to know how the fresh valley looks to me
06:29130 kilometers southwest in Abbotsford.
06:39It's one of those things we do when we're not towing on the Coca-Cola.
06:43Al Quiring is headed off the highway to an inside job.
06:50We're going to do a little bit of winch work for a local business.
06:54They've got some obsolete machines that are very, very heavy.
06:56So we're just going to help them out with the big tow truck.
07:00These machines are like 80,000 pounds.
07:03So it's kind of a specialized operation.
07:08An injection molding business...
07:11This is strange!
07:12...has called in an unusual request.
07:16All this equipment is obsolete now.
07:19So it's got to go over bringing in newer machines.
07:22Al must tow the old machines out of the factory.
07:27To hand them off to a 62-metre-tall crane.
07:32It's a 200-ton capacity crane.
07:35The first and heaviest piece of machinery...
07:38I would say 90,000 pounds.
07:40...is already outside the building.
07:43Good little traffic jam, eh?
07:44I pulled the machine out yesterday because the customer was pretty concerned about the cost of the crane.
07:51Taylor, probably softener's up here on those edges because it's going to pull in and they're quite sharp.
07:57Crane operator Aaron Minye...
07:59Keep coming.
08:00Keep coming.
08:01Hold it there.
08:02...has been trying to lift the machine onto the lowbed trailer.
08:06Yeah, I don't think this thing is balanced very well.
08:12The injection molding machine consists of two parts.
08:16The injection unit, which heats and pushes through plastic pellets.
08:21And the clamping unit, which presses the plastic into shape.
08:28Inside, it's a hydraulic piston in there.
08:31So that piston, I bet you, 30 inches around, probably five feet long of solid steel.
08:38That's a big chunk of steel.
08:43Is it going to lift? Is it not going to lift?
08:50Still heavy on one end, eh?
08:52Oh, that's nasty.
08:55See, operators are having a hard time getting the center of gravity to balance to pick that up safely.
09:02An unbalanced lift could cause the machine to slip, shock-loading the crane.
09:10These cranes are not built like a tow truck where it'll take a big shock load.
09:14You break one of those straps, the crane's gone.
09:18Al lets the crane team...
09:20You can only make suggestions.
09:23...work through their process.
09:25So you basically have to let them sort it out.
09:30I think they just figured it out. That's heavy on the other end.
09:33The costs are going to add up.
09:36Because we've got equipment standing by.
09:38The tow truck, the low beds, the crane.
09:40Time's in ticking.
09:42Let's go!
09:46This accident, a brake check or what?
09:49Up on the coke.
09:51Truck is off the road there.
09:53At the brake check entrance.
09:56Too reliable truck, sir. It shouldn't take them too long.
10:00Team reliable separates a C-can...
10:03Look at what?
10:04...from its chassis.
10:06I'm just going to take all my rigging off the back here.
10:09And Andy will set up for the big pull-out.
10:11There's always pressure to get everything out as quick as you can.
10:14You have to keep the off-ramp open.
10:17Keep everything flowing and traffic moving.
10:21You ready?
10:22With the power of his three drive axles...
10:26I call this truck heavy metal.
10:29Tri-drive means it can tow a lot more weights.
10:32Andy will try to drag the rig...
10:35Just watch yourself, sir.
10:37...out of the roadway.
10:42...out of the roadway.
10:43Andy...
10:43Hey!
10:48I had the brake check in the single lane.
10:50No, water.
10:51On the coquahala.
10:53Ready?
10:56Reliables attempt to drag a tractor and chassis...
11:01...away from the brake check entrance.
11:05Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
11:07Andy.
11:08Hey!
11:09Let's hit a snag.
11:11Taking the whole container with you.
11:13One of the rear tires caught on one of the floor braces of the container.
11:20I'll back up and drag it over six feet.
11:23We just got to slide the back over and get it clear.
11:28I can't work without gloves.
11:30You guys are nuts.
11:31New hire, Dalen.
11:33Uses Hornet to pull the tires away from the C-cam.
11:39Yeah, that's good.
11:41So Andy can resume towing the rig out of the entrance.
11:51Probably drive now.
11:54Half the wreck is out of the way.
11:57Let's those left-bound scales do it.
12:00Let's help the driver.
12:01Just head there now.
12:04But the clock is ticking on the C-can.
12:08Loaded with half a million dollars of pork.
12:12Without the truck and trailer, the freezer doesn't work.
12:16Let me see where the trailer is.
12:19So keep everything sealed up and get it under a refrigerator again as quick as we can.
12:25Andy checks in with dispatch.
12:28What's the possibility to get the can back on that chassis?
12:31This chassis is not road-worthy.
12:34This chassis is not road-worthy.
12:34Yeah, that's kind of what I figured.
12:36We don't want to send it down a hill with the ruined trailer.
12:38And we'll get that sorted out.
12:40Thanks.
12:41Now they'll need to wait for a replacement trailer chassis.
12:46Good luck with that.
12:50In the Fraser Valley, time's a ticking.
12:54A crane team struggles with a piece of heavy machinery.
12:58It's not a balanced thing.
13:00So picking it up with what the prescribed lifting points are according to the diagram is not going
13:07to work because the balance is off, so it's going to sit cockeyed.
13:13So, like you see on the manual, it wants you to pick on the end and right here.
13:18We did that and teetered up.
13:21Now it's time for Al to add his expertise.
13:25Look at the picture again, though, because it's looking like that ram is pushed out.
13:30In the diagram, it's showing it retracted, but in actuality, this hydraulic ram is extended,
13:37so the balancing is going to be completely different than what these guys are trying to do in the book.
13:43I would take those things and move them up to there.
13:47It's a little bit heavier on one side, so you've got to adjust the center of balance.
13:54There we go, boys.
13:56It's looking a little more balanced.
14:00It's a good lift.
14:04Let's throw her on.
14:11With the first unit loaded.
14:15One more piece.
14:17Al's up to bat with Big Green.
14:21Now back in the wrecker, we'll pick this up.
14:25I think this happened.
14:27Yes.
14:32Al backs in through tight quarters.
14:35This machine, we've got what they call machine skates underneath it.
14:41Okay, you guys ready?
14:43He needs to carefully roll the 45,000-pound machine.
14:49High center of gravity.
14:51Out of the building.
14:53It's towing.
14:54Anything can happen.
14:56Just go ahead nice and slow.
14:59Once I pick it up, all the weight is on the skates, and that's the sketchy part.
15:04Just watch the wheels.
15:06There'll be a point where something could go wrong.
15:10I deal in sketchy every day.
15:15Al has to rely on spotters to monitor the mood.
15:20Whoop.
15:24I feel sorry for those little wheels.
15:28Because they're packing a lot of weight.
15:34Hang on!
15:35Oh, that doesn't sound good.
15:41They'll go flying into the brake check, you see.
15:45Back up near the mountain pass.
15:47They're pulling a wreck out of that sketch there.
15:50Not a hard part.
15:51Team Reliable needs to move a 70,000-pound sea can without closing the brake check.
16:00We've got to get it far.
16:01Hopefully we can slide it up and out.
16:07Earlier this morning, the driver misjudged the shoulder and rolled his reefer container into the ditch.
16:18Because it's an international load going overseas on a container ship, it has to be sealed.
16:22There's a little green seal on all these things.
16:24It's a really big fine if we break it, so...
16:27It's got to stay closed.
16:29With a half-million-dollar load of pork.
16:33The container's got no cooling of any kind, so we're under the gun to get it out quick.
16:39And a replacement trailer hours away.
16:42They can't make it here quick enough.
16:45Andy and Daylin get started.
16:49We go to work, let's stand this up, and then we'll see about moving it over there.
16:53We're going to get the can into the brake check to get it out of the way of the traffic.
16:59They rig to the corner pockets of the sea can.
17:03The max weight on the container is 77,000 pounds, which is about 34,000 kilograms.
17:10So that's heavy.
17:14Working from the shoulders, high and low lines from Heavy Metal and Hornet will roll the sea can upright,
17:23so that it can be dragged into the brake check.
17:28Pull on the high one!
17:37We're down!
17:47We're down!
17:50The sea can is upright.
17:52But now they have to move it.
17:56We need to pull it sideways.
17:57That's not as easy.
17:59It's very heavy, and there's no wheels under it anymore, so we've got to work it out for us.
18:04So I'm going to put the snatch block on there, and the hook back to there.
18:08Try to pull it up and out.
18:14Try pulling.
18:16Andy and Dalen try to slingshot the sea can between them.
18:21Terrible with this one.
18:24To bring it up to the road.
18:29Hang on.
18:32We're fighting each other too much.
18:34Andy, you're pulling me over with you.
18:42In Abbotsford.
18:43I'm lifting it now.
18:45Al Quiring is rolling the last piece of heavy machinery.
18:49The flight just barely do it.
18:51To a waiting crane outside.
18:57But exiting the building.
19:00Hey!
19:01Hey, Al!
19:02Ah!
19:04The plan goes sideways.
19:08The skate came off.
19:09They hit the lip and it came off.
19:12Replacing the machinescape.
19:14Ooh.
19:15Will be a costly delay.
19:18Time is money.
19:20But there's another option.
19:22We might be able to get it from here.
19:24It's going to be tight.
19:25Al has pulled the 40,000 pound machine just within reach of the crane.
19:31All the weight's there so I'll pick here and here probably.
19:34Doesn't look heavy.
19:37But boy is it ever.
19:40With Al standing by for support.
19:43I want to be boomed up towards me so we pull it away from that door.
19:48They've got one shot to make the lift.
19:52We were cutting into my lunch time though so I gotta go.
19:56Ah, that's one second.
20:01Coming up on a line nice and slow.
20:05Hey Darren, let it drag a bit.
20:11You're good, it's added.
20:13Last thing you want to do is be in a pickle.
20:15You don't have a fork to get yourself out of that jar.
20:17I'll make sure we get this lift on.
20:22Still too far out that way.
20:27That's looking better.
20:29Might not be too bad.
20:34We're just going to drop it on the ground.
20:36There's no truck here.
20:37The low bed will return for the final piece.
20:42We got the project completed.
20:44I mean it took a little bit of time for the initial lift.
20:47Okay, I got you.
20:49You know on the most part, it went tic-tac-toe.
20:53Yeah, we'll be good.
20:56Hey Al, good job.
20:57Yeah, thank you lad.
20:58Thanks for coming out.
20:59Alright, couldn't have done without the crane guys back there either.
21:02Customers happy.
21:03Sometimes the clouds part and rose petals do fall, I'll tell you.
21:08Firing to do this thing.
21:14We got a jam up at the brake check.
21:17Up the coat.
21:19Good in recovery there, but...
21:21At the Zoptius brake check entrance,
21:26Daylin is on the losing end of a tug of war with a loaded C-can.
21:33Hang on.
21:34Because we can't close any part of the lane, we got to work on the shoulder.
21:39It's going to be a challenge.
21:41We're fighting each other too much.
21:44Andy!
21:44Hey!
21:45You're pulling me over with you.
21:47I got to let go.
21:50Wreckers are designed to work off the back end, not off the side.
21:55They adjust their low lines.
21:58We just got to figure out the equilibrium.
22:00Back to where we can see now.
22:02To slingshot the C-can onto the road.
22:06I'm going to winch in.
22:17Ah, come on.
22:32I'm on the white line there.
22:34All we got to do now is just brake free on my end.
22:38And Andy do the rest.
22:41If I just pick up this end, then clutch pull it over there.
22:45With truck traffic showing no signs of slowing,
22:49Andy hooks up...
22:52There we go.
22:53...for a quick move out of the entrance.
22:56Once we get this out of the way, it'll be safer for everybody in the brake check.
23:01Get everything clear.
23:03Get everything flowing again.
23:07Loaded with a half million dollars of pork.
23:13The guy's plugged into it now, making sure it's chilled, so...
23:17The C-can is secured.
23:20All we need is somebody to bring the chassis out.
23:24And ready to be loaded on a new trailer.
23:28The ugly part's done.
23:30Now the hard part.
23:32The exit is clear.
23:33They got rid of the semi.
23:58The exit is clear.
24:04It's stuck in the mud.
24:06A farm hand trying to level the field...
24:10This thing's really stuck in here.
24:12...has dug himself into a muddy pit.
24:16The new kid, he had to move my material over there.
24:20And for some odd reason, he decided to dig a hole.
24:24Decided to get it incredibly stuck.
24:26But the crew sent to retrieve the excavator...
24:32...is in over their head.
24:35The machine usually can get itself out, but someone made a real big mistake on this one.
24:41Water and clay and mud, so it's just like quicksand.
24:45Holy moly, man.
24:48Bringing in extra muscle in the form of a 50-ton rotator...
24:53We got an excavator buried in the mud.
24:57...aggressive towing's lead operator, Chris Mervin.
25:00I don't know if the excavator slid into the hole, or if he just drove it in.
25:04I mean, it's definitely not supposed to be in there, though.
25:07Let's see if we can give him a hand and bring Robbie with me today.
25:10Rob Lewis is also on hand to help swamp.
25:14My job today with Merv is my normal.
25:18Merv gets to stand and operate, and I go do the dirty work.
25:27We did good!
25:28You'd been digging, boys!
25:30Yeah!
25:32If we get all the mud out, it doesn't help we're in the water table.
25:36So it keeps filling up.
25:38You can see there, look.
25:39Well then, shovel quick.
25:42Ten feet down, the excavator has reached the water table.
25:47An aquifer stretching underneath 208 square kilometers of farmland.
25:54Why so deep?
25:56No idea.
25:57Can you see that pin in there or no?
25:58That's what we're working on.
26:00Getting closer?
26:02Deep in the mud.
26:05There's a pole point on the underside of the excavator.
26:10I like having the shovel operators on hand.
26:12It makes my job a lot easier anyway.
26:15Today we had help and I didn't have to do the dirty work.
26:18Then I'll back up.
26:20Then come this way and we keep the ass end of my truck.
26:24Somewhere close to this gravelly looking stuff.
26:27If Berth breaks through that, she's likely going to end up just as deep as the excavator in this muck.
26:33That excavator is in there.
26:35We want to stay on top, that's for sure.
26:38Once we break through is when you start to have problems.
26:41I'm a little nervous, I mean I don't want to look like that thing either.
26:48Look pretty clear right now.
26:50In the farmlands of the Fraser Valley.
26:54Clear as mud.
26:55Merv gets positioned.
26:57I'll try wiggling my truck in.
26:59To rescue a dug-in excavator.
27:04Just driving in here, I'm leaving some nice ruts.
27:08This is about as close as I'm going to get to them.
27:10Getting Bertha in a position where she's straight on with the excavator gives the most advantage to being able to
27:15pull that excavator out of the mud.
27:18Try to create some lift to get the nose of them tracks back up on top.
27:22If we can break the suction, we'll be winning.
27:26This kind of mud, it just sticks to you.
27:28It makes everything heavier and harder to deal with.
27:31Hooking on to the dug-out pin of the excavator.
27:35Everyone out?
27:36Merv starts pulling.
27:41Keep moving.
27:43We're not sinking in too bad yet.
27:45If we're sinking, then that means we're really pulling on this excavator.
27:55But they need the power of both machines.
27:59Hey, Robbie.
28:00Got the boom out?
28:02To pull the excavator out before it drags Bertha in.
28:08By using the excavator's arm and the tracks, we're actually breaking suction at the same time as Bertha's winching on
28:14it.
28:17Try to get his tracks this way.
28:22Just as the excavator breaks free.
28:26You're okay.
28:28It threatens to tip back in.
28:31Can you spin your arm to the backside?
28:35But with the boom, now keeping it stable.
28:39Okay, you can start walking back.
28:44Keep going.
28:45The machine...
28:46Slow though, slow.
28:49Finally rolls onto firm ground.
28:56One excavator out of the mud, boys.
28:59I'm really happy to get it out.
29:02Teamwork.
29:03It's always teamwork.
29:04Yeah, good.
29:05Yeah, she's a little muddy after that little bath.
29:09These boys on scene, you know, they're willing to dig.
29:11They're willing to get muddy.
29:12And, you know, they've got great attitude.
29:14Hey, thanks a lot.
29:15Appreciate it.
29:15Thanks for the help.
29:17Appreciate it.
29:17Thanks for digging.
29:18Appreciate it.
29:20All right, let's get out of here, Robbie.
29:21We set out to get this thing out of the hole and it's no longer there.
29:27So, overall, 10 out of 10.
29:30Progressive did a good job.
29:44She got cold fast.
29:47An hour northeast.
29:50I pulled in the brake, Jack.
29:51Holy smokes, it was slippery.
29:54High on the coquihalla.
29:56Pretty greasy up here.
29:58Night has fallen.
30:01Oh, it got slippery out.
30:03And a replacement trailer...
30:05It's about to get busy here.
30:08...finally arrives for Team Reliable.
30:11So, we gotta deal with the cannon.
30:14We're both gonna come off of this side.
30:16So that he can pull under from that side.
30:19I think we'll be all right.
30:20It'll be fine.
30:22If not, we'll blame it on Hunter.
30:24Hey, no.
30:25Swamper Hunter Bradley will lend an extra hand...
30:30...on the lift.
30:32Hunter's here now to help us break things.
30:35Keep going.
30:36Doesn't get a little experience.
30:37He's trying to move his way up.
30:40Well, how far is that reached?
30:42We can use all the help we can get.
30:47We like max lift.
30:48Yeah.
30:49This is 77,000 pounds in reach at half boom.
30:53There's just no room for air, right?
30:55We need to line everything up.
30:58Okay, let me set up to match you then.
31:00To be able to lift all that weight.
31:03Okay, that should be good there.
31:08Let's see if we get it high enough.
31:12Lines from Heavy Metal and Hornet will run to the top corners of the sea can.
31:19Lifting it four feet off the ground.
31:23So a driver can back the new chassis underneath.
31:31As it lifts up, it's going to go towards the truck.
31:36You'll see.
31:37We'll help you when it gets there.
31:39You got one shot.
31:41With the driver prepped, it's showtime.
31:45Okay, send her up.
31:50Okay, I'm off the ground.
31:52Okay, I'm set.
31:54Up.
31:55Up we go.
31:56I think for any 50 ton wrecker, this is a hell of a lift.
32:16How close are we to that truck?
32:19Bring that truck back.
32:20I think he'll fit under.
32:23Get him slow.
32:25You have to hope that you're high enough that it doesn't get bumped when the chassis backs under it.
32:31If he's going to touch it, just stop him.
32:35That guy's skills are going to basically make or break this.
32:39Slowly.
32:40If he can back under it nice and straight, then we're in good shape.
32:44But if he's got to readjust a bunch of times and can't get it, we might be in trouble.
32:51With only inches to spare on one side.
32:56Slowly come back.
32:58You're good.
32:59Keep coming back straight.
33:01The driver tentatively reverses under.
33:06Keep going.
33:08All this is being done in a parking lot that is a complete sheet of ice.
33:17Slowly.
33:22All he's doing is spinning.
33:25Is he spinning?
33:26He's spinning.
33:28He's on, on.
33:30Whoa!
33:34He's on, on.
33:37At the softest brake check,
33:40he's spinning.
33:42Reliable's precarious sea can transfers.
33:46Risks slipping away.
33:49The driver of the chassis is reversing in the ice with an empty trailer.
33:54This guy's got no traction.
33:56Throw a couple of chains on him.
33:59You want to throw one on the other side too, Andy?
34:01Yeah.
34:04Right here.
34:08Nothing like throwing chains while balancing 70,000 pounds in the air.
34:14Not supposed to admit that we're scared, but I'm scared a bit.
34:17The more time under tension, obviously the more chance of risk, right?
34:22What if the wind picks up?
34:23What if a crow flies?
34:25What if?
34:26The sooner the better.
34:27Get it done.
34:29Well, he should be better now.
34:32But even with chains, the driver struggles on the uneven surface.
34:41Do you want me to get in there and do this?
34:43How many 53 footers have you backed up?
34:47Unless you back it up and I'll guide you in.
34:52Andy steps up.
34:55Do I try?
34:56To show them how it's done.
34:58I now have the challenge of trying to line this trailer up front and rear.
35:03No pressure.
35:06In a sheet of ice with no drive time in the seat of this truck.
35:12It's just, get her done.
35:14Should be good straight on.
35:17When the chassis backs up under the container, they only have a couple inches for the pocket to sit into
35:25the locks.
35:27So this has to be done pretty accurately.
35:31But this time, with Andy behind the wheel...
35:35Okay, keep going.
35:37Oh!
35:38The chassis is lined up for the pricey load of pork.
35:43Can I get this thing off my boom now?
35:47Ready?
35:48Okay, out.
36:04Woo!
36:05She's on.
36:07Over there.
36:09Perfect.
36:13Nice.
36:15We got it set down on it.
36:17Everything's secure and ready for transport.
36:20Alright.
36:22We work well as a team.
36:24Good work, man.
36:25Good job.
36:26Yeah.
36:26At the end of the day, we saved hundreds of thousands of dollars potentially for the customer.
36:30I think overall it was a good wreck and a good recovery and a good day.
36:34Relief.
36:35Big relief.
36:36Pressure is extreme, but the job stays the same.
36:39We have the right equipment, we have the right people, and the work gets done.
36:42We didn't die.
36:44We didn't die.
36:45We didn't bend nothing.
36:46Nope.
36:46Do you want to do it again?
36:47Win-win.
36:47No, I don't.
36:48Sure do.
36:49This was an easy one.
36:54Turn on a good job, Chief.
36:56Come on.
36:56Come on, man.
36:57I'm going to go.
36:57Come on.
36:57Come on.
36:57Come on.
36:58Come on.
37:05I'm going to go.
37:09Anybody just come off the coke, and they tell me how it is?
37:12The next day on the coke.
37:15Pretty ugly up there this morning.
37:18Rising temperatures.
37:20That is pretty messy.
37:22Bring treacherous conditions.
37:27Last night, they have a lot of snow.
37:29Heading up the hill in a Jamie Davis one-ton.
37:33I'm going on top of the Coca-Cola.
37:36There's a transport Peterbilt that is stuck on the ice.
37:41Rookie operator, Maxim Chamberlain-Norman.
37:44Yeah, today is my first time that I'm going to recover a summit.
37:48This will be a big job for Max.
37:51You've got to be quick. You've got to be efficient at it.
37:54Yeah, I'm supposed to be able to do that job.
37:57Think on the fly. Solve problems when they happen.
38:01Pretty slippery.
38:03Stuck in wet snow.
38:05You know, just get it done. Do it.
38:08Maxim's first stuck semi puts the greenhorn to the test.
38:13They've been waiting, right?
38:14So you need to be quick and do what you can to help him.
38:20With only 5,000 pounds in the trailer, it's too light to get traction.
38:27Even if you have a good truck, you can't go nowhere with no weight in the back.
38:30Did you try to put the chain on?
38:33Yeah, but it's not good.
38:34Chain is broke.
38:36The truck just spin and spin and spin.
38:39So I'm going to put some salt in front of the tire.
38:42I'm going to shovel a little bit.
38:44Every second the semi sits in the snow.
38:46The truck needs to get out of there.
38:49Puts the driver further behind schedule.
38:53Pity, pretty slushy and it's a big mess.
38:59Okay, I'll go get my shovel.
39:02You need to make sure that there's no snow in front of the wheels.
39:09I can't leave him here.
39:13You have a job to do.
39:18Now, it's up to the trucker.
39:23Are you ready to drive?
39:25To drive his rig.
39:27Back up a little bit and after I go forward.
39:31Out of the slush.
39:33Yeah, slowly.
39:37The slush and water.
39:42You can't go nowhere with a semi.
39:45Put your wheel straight.
39:48But now, it's moving a little bit.
39:51Non-stop.
39:54Continue.
39:56But not enough.
39:59Move.
40:03Anyone know what the Coca-Cola summit looks like right now?
40:08I'm just climbing up the hill here.
40:10It's crazy.
40:12At the Zopkius brake check.
40:14Yeah, slowly.
40:17Maxim's first heavy recovery.
40:20Non-stop.
40:21Is slipping away.
40:24Move.
40:25And his customer is losing valuable time.
40:29I'm going to need to pull you.
40:31You always need to think ahead.
40:33Because you always need to have a plan B and plan C.
40:37Maxim hooks low on the bumper near the mounting bracket.
40:41You ready?
40:42I'm confident that I'm going to get him out of there.
40:46Dropping his spades and raising his boom.
40:51Maxim.
40:52Maxim winches with the one-ton.
40:56Pulling the semi out of the deep slush.
41:02Pulling out.
41:03I got him out.
41:05Now he's going to try on his own.
41:07And he can still continue on his journey.
41:11Through trial and error, Maxim finally gets it done.
41:17That's how we learn.
41:20All my life I learned the hard way.
41:24I'm a lone wolf.
41:25I just do my own way and that's it.
41:28I'm glad you're out of the window.
41:29And I win at the end.
41:34If I don't win, I learn.
41:37With the driver a little behind schedule,
41:40but safely on his way, Maxim heads back to Hope.
41:48I try my best and I hope I'm going to make Jimmy proud.
41:53But the job has taken longer than expected.
42:00On this job, there's no reason to, you know,
42:04make this any longer than it has to be.
42:07You know, just get it done, do it.
42:10Hey Max, how'd your call go?
42:12Hey, it went good.
42:13I hook it in the bottom and when I awl, I awl slowly.
42:18But it came out.
42:20When you go out on your own,
42:21you're challenged to figure out the problems of that job yourself.
42:25So that's okay.
42:26Things happen.
42:26It's how you deal with it, right?
42:28Well, it's like a newborn fawn.
42:29I mean, it takes a while to learn how to walk.
42:32You know, that's the part about being a new guy.
42:35This industry needs new, fresh, young talent.
42:39And you got the job done, so that's what matters.
42:42Who knows?
42:44That could be Max.
42:45Okay.
42:46Thank you, Jimmy.
42:47No problem.
42:51Next time on Highway Through Hell.
42:55Off road.
42:57Oh, that was my leverage.
42:59And up a tree.
43:00Oh, my.
43:01Reliable gets tricky.
43:03Oh, look at this guy.
43:05On a blind curve.
43:06Come on, come on, come on.
43:08Jamie heads upstream.
43:10Ah.
43:11Merry Christmas.
43:12And holiday cheer.
43:14I got more of a beard layup.
43:16For the biggest toy run ever.
43:18I feel like I need some hair spray.
43:22Let's see you if I'm in.
43:46I don't care.
