00:00Tonight on The Proof is Out There.
00:02Did this video capture something off-world in the Amazon?
00:07You start to see a face.
00:08It looks like its eyes and mouth are opening or changing.
00:12And is there a connection to a famous missing explorer?
00:15It's rumored that he actually believed this to be an outpost
00:19for some sort of extraterrestrial beings.
00:22Some people thought that this slab of meat was undead.
00:26It was speculated that the cow that this meat came from
00:29was a victim of one of these folkloric demons.
00:33Are these strange patterns discovered on a lake bed a message?
00:37A lot of people online believe you have these artificial patterns being dug
00:42for the purpose of communication with some otherworldly entity.
00:46And does the murderous tale told on this rock
00:50solve one of the greatest mysteries in American history?
00:53This stone, many believed, could provide a clue
00:56for what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke.
01:03Around the globe are videos...
01:08Photos...
01:09...and sounds that defy explanation.
01:17We don't know where they come from, who made them, or how they operate.
01:21What are they?
01:22Some sort of bizarre mutation.
01:24What's exciting is nobody really knows.
01:26Extraordinary claims need extraordinary proof.
01:31I'm Tony Harris, and as a journalist for more than 30 years,
01:34I've followed the facts where they take me.
01:37Now I'm bringing that spirit of investigation
01:39to the world's strangest sounds and images.
01:42It's coming towards us.
01:43We'll analyze each one with top experts.
01:46It's a credible case.
01:48It's a credible video.
01:49And pass a verdict on what it is.
01:51This video was clearly faked.
01:54The Proof starts now.
02:04Good evening and welcome to The Proof is Out There.
02:08We know the Amazon rainforest is home to some of the planet's most exotic creatures.
02:13But could it also be sheltering lifeforms not of this Earth?
02:18April 23rd, 2024.
02:21A group of conservationists flies a drone over an undisclosed location in the Amazon.
02:28Later, when the team reviews the footage, something odd appears.
02:32A spooky, alien-like creature seems to be hiding among the green canopy of the forest.
02:39Did you catch it?
02:40The footage is blurry, but when we enhance it,
02:44we see what appears to be a gray-colored being nestled between the trees.
02:48It looks to have a large, bulbous head, a long, thin body.
02:52And with these oversized, almond-shaped eyes,
02:55it immediately invites comparison to the classic gray aliens described by alleged abductees.
03:02The footage adds to a long pattern of strange Amazonian sightings.
03:06Brazilian researcher Roni Vernet recently documented UFOs near the villages of Amazonian indigenous tribes.
03:14Videos our experts still can't explain.
03:17The object starts to descend very, very low on the top three level,
03:22and start to go inside the forest and going out of the forest.
03:26After some minutes, I start to realize that, oh, okay, this is not something normal.
03:30This is something really anomalous.
03:32It makes sense that a hyper-intelligent alien species might use the Amazon to their advantage.
03:39If you were an alien species that didn't want to panic the local human beings living on the planet,
03:44I think that is a reasonable spot to hide out.
03:47Another theory is that this creature is returning to a place where aliens had prior contact with humans.
03:56In the early 1920s, there was a British explorer named Percy Fawcett,
04:01and he actually uncovered an ancient Portuguese manuscript
04:05that described an absolutely wondrous Amazonian city.
04:09The city supposedly had crazy advanced architecture
04:12and also very advanced knowledge of astronomy and mathematics.
04:16In his cryptic journals, Fawcett hinted that the city of Z
04:21was built by a long-lost advanced civilization of spiritually evolved entities.
04:28Some believe he was referring to beings, not of this Earth.
04:32It's rumored that he actually believed this to be an outpost
04:36for some sort of extraterrestrial beings that had visited Earth millions of years ago.
04:42Some people have speculated that perhaps that's why there are so many UFO sightings
04:48and such alien interests in the Amazon.
04:55After years of searching for the lost city of Z,
04:59Percy Fawcett and his son vanished deep in the Amazon.
05:02While many believe they were killed by hostile tribes or succumbed to disease,
05:06others speculate Fawcett may have made first contact with beings not of this world.
05:12Could this creature be connected?
05:14Let's see what our experts think.
05:21Are we just not seeing the forest for the trees?
05:24Some foliage can look like animals,
05:27like this supposed dogman creature that turned out to be a bush.
05:31As I re-watched it, I did see something move,
05:34and I do think that it is actually something living in the forest.
05:39This is what we're seeing.
05:40Here you can detect the creature's head turning to the left.
05:43But could this really be an incognito extraterrestrial?
05:47Before we run too far with that notion,
05:49we need to rule out some other potential explanations.
05:53Although I do see resemblance physically to an alien,
05:55I think there are much more plausible and logical answers as to what this is.
06:02There is a tremendous diversity of primates,
06:06from capuchins to howler monkeys.
06:09But they have very distinctive facial features
06:13that would differentiate the monkeys from what I'm seeing here.
06:19This could be a young bird perched high up in the canopy and perhaps a nest.
06:27The Amazon has many bird species.
06:30One of them is the harpy eagle, which is a really large bird of prey.
06:35It looks like its eyes and mouth are opening or changing.
06:39But I think shadow effects from light,
06:41because remember, we're in the canopy here.
06:43There's sun going through leaves.
06:45So I think that's what we're seeing, that's creating that appearance
06:49rather than an actual alien with a mouth and eyes.
06:57Our verdict?
06:59This is no alien, but a harpy eagle.
07:02One of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world.
07:05While it may not be extraterrestrial,
07:08the harpy eagle is a legend unto itself.
07:11Named after the harpies of Greek mythology,
07:13these birds can build nests about five feet wide
07:16and have talons as long as a grizzly bear's claws.
07:22Now let's head home to North America
07:24and one of the most important and secretive sites in the United States.
07:29The White Sands Missile Range provides the United States Armed Forces
07:32with the world's top research, testing, and training facilities.
07:36And some believe this next video proves that research, testing, and training
07:41has involved UFOs.
07:44In the mid-1990s in New Mexico,
07:47a cameraman is positioned in the desert outside the White Sands Missile Range
07:51when he aims his camera up at the sky and catches this.
07:57A bright white object plummets diagonally toward the ground,
08:01but when it strikes the earth, it doesn't explode.
08:04Instead, it bounces, shooting back up into the air.
08:08It almost looks like it's taking off into the sky
08:11until finally it descends once more,
08:14this time exploding in a shower of debris.
08:17Take another look at that bounce and crash.
08:20This strange footage emerged at a 1997 UFO conference
08:24and has been raising questions ever since.
08:28Some people have now speculated that what we're seeing here
08:31is a UFO that has crashed on the White Sands Missile Range.
08:35One of the most mysterious, highly sensitive,
08:37and secretive U.S. military installations in the United States
08:42and quite possibly the world.
08:44For this reason, people have speculated
08:47that whoever took this video worked for a secret government program.
08:52My colleague, who was a senior intelligence official,
08:55testified to the American people and to Congress under oath.
08:59I was informed in the course of my official duties
09:02of a multi-decade UAP crash retrieval
09:06and reverse engineering program.
09:08David Grush says it all started when the U.S. government
09:10came into possession of a craft that crashed in 1930s Italy.
09:15There's a memorandum by Mussolini himself
09:17threatening people with their life
09:19if they were to talk publicly about this crash.
09:21It wasn't until after World War II
09:24that the United States allegedly
09:26gained control of this crash material.
09:29Since then, Grush says the U.S. government
09:32has allegedly been attempting to reverse engineer that material.
09:36He actually testified that there's a secret arms race
09:39that we have with other nations
09:41to try to crack the code, if you will,
09:44on this technology before anybody else does.
09:46So is this bouncing UFO a failed test flight?
09:50Keep in mind, UFOs have been reported to bounce or skip.
09:54Pilot Kenneth Arnold,
09:56one of the earliest eyewitnesses of the UFO phenomenon,
09:59said the UFOs he saw moved like a saucer would
10:02if you skipped it across the water.
10:05But there's another theory,
10:06that it's not a reverse-engineered craft we've built,
10:10but an actual alien craft crash landing.
10:13Turns out there have been other sightings in this area.
10:17Believe it or not,
10:18there is documentation from the U.S. government
10:21where UFOs were seen so common
10:24in and around the White Sands Missile Range area
10:27that there was a huge investigation conducted.
10:30So, listen to this.
10:32December 1948 through May 1950.
10:37Phenomenon have continuously occurred
10:39in the New Mexico skies during the past 18 months
10:42and are continuing to occur,
10:45and these phenomena are occurring
10:47in the vicinity of sensitive military
10:49and government installations.
10:54Based on what Elizondo said,
10:57we found another 1950 memo,
11:00this one from the FBI.
11:02It says three so-called flying saucers
11:05had been recovered in New Mexico,
11:07and it indicates that our own high-powered radar
11:10may have been what caused them to crash.
11:13It seems something was going on then.
11:15But what about this video?
11:22To keep this investigation grounded,
11:24we first asked if the video could be a hoax.
11:28It did come from some sort of tape,
11:30but it has been recompressed.
11:32It has been processed.
11:33When it gets to the last segment of the video,
11:35there is a stabilization that was applied.
11:38The danger with that is you are creating pixels
11:41throughout that area
11:42that may not originally have been in that evidence.
11:45We would need that original tape
11:47or that native file
11:48to be able to definitively confirm
11:51or deny authenticity.
11:52So, in this case, it's inconclusive.
11:54So, there's room for doubt,
11:57but a 2024 report from a Pentagon whistleblower
12:01may support the theory
12:02that this could be a reverse-engineered craft.
12:05It alleges that a government program
12:07called Immaculate Constellation
12:10collects and conceals UFO data
12:12in an effort so secret
12:14the whistleblower fears execution for exposing it.
12:18But just because the government
12:20might be hiding UFO videos,
12:21it doesn't mean this is one of them.
12:24It doesn't quite match
12:25what we would consider to be a traditional UFO
12:28because it has what looks like
12:30some type of propellant coming out of the tail
12:32and that is pushing it forward.
12:34That matters because it's indicative
12:36of a combustion engine,
12:38which produces exhaust.
12:40By contrast, UFOs are thought to have
12:42more advanced methods of propulsion.
12:45I would say 99.9% of the UFOs that we know of
12:49don't leave any type of heat trail
12:52or heat signature behind it or around it.
12:55So, it's probably a conventional construct
12:58that was built to test out something
13:01at the White Sands Muscle Range.
13:02So, what might that something be?
13:06I think the luminous object that we see here
13:09is not an object at all.
13:10That's an artifact of the propulsion system
13:13of a missile that as it's entering a terminal phase,
13:17it skips off the ground and doesn't explode
13:19and then eventually comes back down and explodes.
13:23A missile test at a missile range makes sense.
13:27But is it consistent with the video?
13:29Look closely.
13:31The object appears to pull up
13:33as it careens toward the ground
13:35as if attempting to avoid an impact.
13:39I would not hope to hear anything
13:41about what was tested at White Sands anytime soon
13:44because if they're testing something unusual
13:46beyond the missile, we're not going to hear about it.
13:53Our verdict?
13:55Unexplained object.
13:57While we considered Macmillan's missile theory,
13:59this video is just lacking too much information
14:02to draw an informed conclusion.
14:04The video's inscrutability stands as a testament
14:07to the military's ability to keep something secret.
14:14Who doesn't love a good steak?
14:16In 2022, Americans ate more than 13 million tons of beef,
14:21followed closely by the Chinese,
14:23who consumed close to 12 million.
14:25But the next time you're in China,
14:27you may want your beef cooked well done,
14:30especially after seeing our next story.
14:34December 2017, Fushan City, China.
14:37A shopper returns home from her trip to the local butcher.
14:40But when she throws her prized slab of meat
14:43on the cutting board,
14:44something unappetizing happens.
14:47The beef begins to twitch.
14:49First, a piece of the midsection moves slightly.
14:53But before long, the whole filet begins pulsating.
14:57The slab of mysterious meat even appears to be breathing.
15:01Many online speculated that this strange-acting meat
15:05could have been artificially grown inside a lab.
15:07There's a new technology called cellular agriculture
15:11where you basically grow meat.
15:13They take real muscle tissue from an animal,
15:16and then they grow more muscle tissue in a petri dish.
15:19While others thought something admittedly far out
15:23could be at play.
15:24Chinese folklore has a demon called a chongxi.
15:28It's kind of a cross between a vampire and a zombie.
15:31Some people have speculated that the cow
15:34that this meat came from
15:35was a victim of one of these folkloric demons.
15:40Just like Western vampires,
15:42Jiangxi are said to feed on the life force of the living.
15:46According to some legends,
15:48they are corpses whose physical bodies were reanimated
15:50and puppeteered by a necromancer,
15:53someone who can raise the dead.
15:55They can go after your pets.
15:57They can go after livestock.
15:58And it just really wreaks havoc upon the environment.
16:02You don't want one of these things in your neighborhood.
16:06Many people who watched this video
16:08were reminded of a mad cow disease outbreak from the 90s,
16:11where holes developed in the brains of infected animals,
16:15causing them to act nervous, uncoordinated, even violent.
16:19But in those cases,
16:20it was primarily the animal's brain and spinal cord
16:24that were affected,
16:25while the muscle tissue remained untouched.
16:27So why is this meat twitching?
16:30Let's check in with the experts.
16:37First, we checked to see if this meat
16:39could be infested with worms,
16:41like many online suggested.
16:43There is a worm called trichinella,
16:46which is a parasite that you can get
16:48from eating undercooked or raw meat.
16:51Now, what people should know and understand about trichinella
16:53is that they're actually microscopic parasites.
16:56So to think that something that small would have the strength
16:59to move the muscle of a piece of meat that big
17:03would be impossible.
17:05And as far as the reanimating legends
17:07of China's Jiangxi are concerned,
17:10even if those stories were true,
17:12in this case, that's not what's happening.
17:14The Chinese folklore showed sentience and communication
17:19where the brain is still connected to the muscle
17:21and commanding it on what to do.
17:23That's not what we're seeing here.
17:25This is a piece of meat
17:26that's just spontaneously contracting.
17:28So could this be a strange side effect
17:31of meat manufactured in a lab?
17:34Now, lab-grown meat doesn't look like this.
17:36Lab-grown meat is mushy, it's slushy,
17:38it's minced, it looks like ground beef.
17:40It doesn't look like these beautiful, long muscle fibers.
17:43Then what exactly is going on here?
17:46This is really spooky,
17:48but the fact that it's still twitching
17:49actually indicates that the quality of meat is really good
17:53and that, indeed, it is really fresh.
17:55The animal must have been recently butchered,
17:58and it's likely that she put salt on it.
18:01Salt is actually sodium chloride,
18:03and these muscle cells have sodium channels on them.
18:06And if you douse them with salt,
18:08it's going to open up all those channels
18:10and fire off the contractions.
18:12But this won't happen for much longer.
18:15This only happens for a short period of time
18:18after the animal is butchered.
18:25Our verdict? Salted muscle spasms.
18:28Our experts agree, while it's very freaky,
18:31this is nothing more than meat
18:33from a recently butchered animal.
18:35So recently, its muscle cells are still able to react
18:38to sodium chloride.
18:40But if it's still twitching after a couple of days,
18:43we may have a whole new story on our hands.
18:48As we've seen,
18:49plenty of strange stories come out of China.
18:52Alleged dragon sightings,
18:54alien egg implants,
18:56and that mystery meat we investigated earlier.
18:59But if you think we dug deep on those stories,
19:02wait till you see what some are calling
19:04a sunken civilization.
19:07November 11, 2022.
19:10Yuoyang, China.
19:11Extreme heat and low rainfall
19:13have caused a catastrophic drought
19:15in Dongting Lake.
19:17But when a local resident flies a drone
19:20over the lake bed,
19:21he wasn't expecting to find this.
19:24At the bottom of the dried-out lake,
19:26a pattern is revealed.
19:29Seen from above,
19:30it looks like an enormous maze
19:32has been carved into the lake bed's mudflats.
19:36Local residents say that each of these huge,
19:39strangely shaped segments
19:41is roughly the size of a soccer field.
19:44The footage went viral
19:47on the Chinese social media app Douyin,
19:50where videos of the patterns exploded
19:52and received millions upon millions of views.
19:55We had a lot of speculation
19:57as to what caused these.
19:59Some wondered whether these exposed patterns
20:02are anything like the mysterious
20:03Nazca Lines of Peru.
20:06The Nazca Lines were built thousands of years ago.
20:08And when viewed from the sky,
20:10you had images of various animals
20:12and people and geometric patterns.
20:14And some speculated that these were
20:17essentially a sort of landing pad
20:19for alien spaceships.
20:21Another theory is that these remnants
20:23are connected to a lost continent
20:25called Moon,
20:27popularized by British writer James Churchward.
20:30The idea is very similar
20:32to the lost continent of Atlantis.
20:35Churchward did some traveling to India,
20:37where he began visiting various temples
20:39and monasteries.
20:40And he befriends this high priest
20:43in this temple
20:44who shows him these strange tablets
20:46that allegedly show and describe
20:49this long lost continent.
20:51Churchward became convinced
20:52Mu existed somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.
20:57This wouldn't be the first time
20:59that an ancient Chinese ruin
21:00was found underwater.
21:02In 2001, scuba divers stumbled upon
21:05an entire city from the 7th century
21:07submerged within the depths of a lake.
21:10The ancient underwater city of Xichen
21:12was declared a protected historical relic.
21:15Have we found another monument here?
21:18Let's ask the experts.
21:24First, is this an ancient astronaut landing site,
21:28similar to what some believe
21:30is the purpose of the Nazca lines?
21:32This shows me no evidence
21:34that this was any kind of a runway whatsoever.
21:36And there's no evidence of any machinery
21:38or anything left behind.
21:40For example,
21:41I mean, the Mars rovers leave tracks behind.
21:43They're actually shedding pieces of wire
21:45or pieces of insulation,
21:47but you see nothing like that in this region.
21:50Could there be some connection
21:51to the lost civilization of Mu?
21:53The evidence doesn't seem to suggest so.
21:56The problem with that
21:58is that Mu, like Atlantis,
22:00was supposed to be a fantastic,
22:03very advanced civilization.
22:05And what we see here on the ground,
22:07if it's a settlement at all,
22:10is a very humble and modest one,
22:12mostly loose gravel.
22:15And that is no way to set a foundation,
22:17not the kind of thing
22:19we would expect out of Mu.
22:21Is it possible
22:22that what we're seeing
22:23was caused by some natural underwater force?
22:27Like this artistic puffer fish
22:29that we featured in a previous episode,
22:31which sculpted sand on the seafloor
22:34into beguiling patterns.
22:37I cannot think of a process
22:39that would have created
22:40these elbow joints
22:42and the little spots
22:43and in a perfect rectangle
22:46or square like this,
22:47this is almost certainly
22:50the hands of man.
22:52If that's true,
22:53who's responsible
22:54for building these structures
22:56and why'd they do it?
22:57The official conclusion
22:59of the Chinese government
23:01is that these represent
23:02illegal fishing operations
23:05involving short fences
23:07that trap the fish
23:09during seasonal inundation.
23:11A fish trap works
23:13by using water currents
23:14to guide fish into a confined area
23:16where they become stuck.
23:18Then the fish can easily
23:20be harvested at low time.
23:22But could there be something,
23:23well, fishy
23:24about this explanation?
23:26I don't think
23:27the Chinese government
23:28has a great track record
23:30of properly publicly identifying
23:33unexplained things.
23:35The government's conclusion
23:37that something
23:38this geometrically complex
23:40is simply to capture fish
23:43seems lacking in my opinion.
23:49Our verdict?
23:50Unexplained construction.
23:52While we agree
23:53with Anderson and Barnhart
23:54that this isn't Moo
23:55or an alien landing site,
23:58there's no concrete evidence
23:59telling us exactly
24:00what it is,
24:01who made it,
24:02or why.
24:05In 1587,
24:07about 120 English colonists
24:09founded a settlement
24:11on Roanoke Island
24:12off the coast
24:13of what is now North Carolina.
24:15Three years later,
24:17when a ship came to check on them,
24:18they had all disappeared.
24:20Can a stone found in the 1930s
24:23finally solve this enduring mystery?
24:27September 1937,
24:29Edenton, North Carolina.
24:31Tourist Lewis Hammond
24:32is taking a walk in the woods
24:34along the Chawan River
24:35when he suddenly comes across this.
24:39It's a stone with faded etchings.
24:42On one side,
24:43there's an inscription written by a woman
24:45with the initials E.W.D.,
24:47saying her husband and child
24:49had passed away.
24:51On the back,
24:52she writes that all but seven
24:54of the Roanoke colonists
24:55were killed by Native Americans.
24:57Hammond brought the stone
24:59to experts at Emory University.
25:01Right off the bat,
25:02Emory made a faculty investigative team
25:06to examine this.
25:07And so you had English professors
25:10and history professors
25:11and the scientists on the team.
25:14They spent five days with this guy,
25:16quizzing him.
25:17And at the end,
25:18the historian at Emory,
25:20he believed this is a real message
25:22from Eleanor Dare.
25:25The stone was signed E.W.D.,
25:27which was assumed to be Eleanor Dare,
25:29John White's daughter.
25:30John White was the leader
25:32of the Roanoke Colony.
25:34Until Dare's stone came along,
25:36the only clue to what happened
25:38to colonists
25:39was an eerie message
25:40found later at the settlement.
25:42It said Croatoan,
25:44which was the name of a local tribe.
25:46One theory is that the colonists
25:48actually moved inland
25:49and were absorbed
25:50into local Native American tribes.
25:52Others believed that they moved inland
25:55and were actually killed
25:57by Native American tribes.
25:59Believe it or not,
26:00another theory comes to us
26:02from a clue
26:03scrawled in invisible ink.
26:05In 2012,
26:06researchers were working
26:07with the British Museum
26:08and they discovered this map
26:10that was apparently created
26:11by John White.
26:12The map had an invisible symbol on it
26:14that was created
26:15with some kind of liquid
26:16and it's believed
26:17that this symbol
26:19indicated where the Roanoke Colony
26:21planned to make its capital.
26:23Experts say that this symbol
26:25is of a fort.
26:27It was about 50 miles inland
26:28from where the colonists
26:30originally settled.
26:31So possibly,
26:32they believe that's where
26:33the members of the Roanoke Colony
26:35were headed
26:35when they left the island
26:37where they had been living.
26:38Could John White's map
26:40tell us what happened
26:41to the colonists?
26:42For now,
26:43the stone remains
26:44the one piece
26:45of archaeological evidence
26:46that spells out
26:47what might have happened
26:49to these lost souls.
26:53After the discovery of a dare stone,
26:55a $500 reward was offered
26:58for anyone who found
26:59anything similar.
27:00A number of people
27:01came forward
27:02with their own stones
27:03like this one,
27:04but their discoveries
27:06were all deemed forgeries.
27:08So is the original dare stone real?
27:11And can it help us figure out
27:12just what happened
27:13to these lost colonists
27:15once and for all?
27:21Is it possible
27:22that the dare stone,
27:23like the forgeries
27:24that cropped up in its wake,
27:26is also just a hoax?
27:28People that have looked
27:29at the letters themselves
27:31are doubtful
27:33that they came
27:34from the time period
27:35of the colony
27:36because it's not
27:38the kind of script
27:39that the average person
27:40would write in
27:41during the late 1500s.
27:44People have suggested
27:45that maybe a chemical
27:47was used on the stone
27:48to make it look
27:49like it's weathered,
27:50but that's not readily available
27:52in the 1930s.
27:53Plus, you can't really fake
27:55having edges of etching
27:58worn down.
28:00When you carve into a rock,
28:01you want to leave behind
28:02something that you
28:03can easily read.
28:04But over time,
28:06those really sharp edges
28:07are going to show
28:09examples of weathering.
28:11It's going to start
28:12not being so sharp
28:13on the edges.
28:14So the stone may
28:15or may not be real,
28:17but what about its message?
28:19Was the colony wiped out
28:20in an attack
28:21or assimilated?
28:23I would think
28:24if I was a great chief
28:25that had decimated
28:26this colony
28:28of Europeans,
28:29that those artifacts
28:30would be highly prized
28:32and I'd be showing them off,
28:34except those artifacts
28:36don't ever show up again.
28:38Or do they?
28:40In June 2025,
28:42archaeologists announced
28:44they discovered
28:44iron flakes
28:45in 16th and 17th century
28:47soil layers
28:48on Hatteras Island,
28:50near where the settlers
28:51disappeared.
28:52They say these flakes
28:54are evidence
28:55of blacksmithing,
28:56which wasn't known
28:57to Native Americans
28:57of that era,
28:58and believe it proves
29:00that the missing colonists
29:01were assimilated.
29:03But the discovery
29:04of a fort
29:05drawn in invisible ink
29:06on John White's map
29:08suggests yet another
29:10possible fate.
29:11The map was recently
29:12re-examined
29:13in the British Museum
29:15and they found
29:16a fort-like structure
29:17about 50 miles inland.
29:20Recent excavations
29:21have also found
29:22artifacts
29:23at this location
29:25that are distinctly European.
29:27And so they haven't yet
29:29found anything
29:29that they can directly
29:31tie back to Roanoke,
29:32but it's an interesting
29:33possibility
29:34that really
29:35they just moved
29:36and he couldn't find them.
29:41Our verdict?
29:43Unexplained.
29:44Like our experts,
29:45we're not only stumped
29:46as to what happened
29:47to the colonists,
29:48but the question
29:49of the Dairstone's
29:50authenticity
29:51still appears
29:52to be uncertain.
29:53And there are
29:54no supporting artifacts
29:55to confirm
29:55its murderous narrative.
29:57In short,
29:58we're between a stone
30:00and a hard place
30:01on this one.
30:04Antarctica is a place
30:06of extremes.
30:07An ice sheet
30:08covers 98%
30:09of the continent
30:10and it remains,
30:12arguably,
30:13one of the most
30:13unexplored places
30:15on the planet.
30:16So when we saw
30:17the weird iceberg
30:18in this next video,
30:19we had to ask,
30:20what does it mean?
30:22October 16th, 2018,
30:25the Larson Sea Ice Shelf
30:27in Antarctica.
30:29Operation Ice Bridge,
30:31NASA's longest-running
30:32aerial survey of polar ice
30:34is flying over this
30:3647,000-square-mile ice sheet.
30:39As the plane surveys
30:40the frozen coastline,
30:42something strange
30:43appears on the horizon
30:44and the team
30:45captures this.
30:47A massive,
30:48perfectly-cut,
30:49rectangular iceberg
30:51stands out
30:52in the surrounding sea ice.
30:53Let's take a closer look.
30:56It's 90-degree angles
30:57appear so precise
30:59and the walls
31:00of the iceberg
31:01so smooth,
31:02it looks like nature
31:04is operating
31:05with such precision
31:05that this rectangle
31:07must have a meaning.
31:08Some believe that this
31:09is an example
31:10of something known
31:10as sacred geometry,
31:12which is the idea
31:13that geometric shapes
31:14in nature
31:15are sending
31:16some kind of message
31:17or have some kind
31:18of symbolic meaning.
31:19Perhaps one of the most
31:20famous examples
31:22of sacred geometry
31:23is what's known
31:25as the golden rectangle.
31:26Its sides
31:27are in a mathematical proportion
31:29called the golden ratio.
31:31This ratio,
31:32roughly 1 to 1.618,
31:35is said to create
31:36a sense of visual balance.
31:38Is someone trying
31:39to tell us something
31:40through these shapes?
31:42Some even believe
31:43that they are
31:44the building blocks
31:45of the universe.
31:46And it's not just
31:48an earthly phenomenon.
31:49Beguiling rectangular shapes
31:51have even been found
31:53in the cosmos.
31:54There's the red rectangle nebula,
31:56HD 44179,
31:58which is a star
31:592,300 light years away
32:00in the constellation
32:01Monteseros.
32:02This star is dying
32:04and it is shedding material
32:07out into space.
32:08And that material
32:09creates a rectangular shape
32:12around the star.
32:13Or, if it's not nature,
32:15some are asking
32:16if the iceberg
32:17in Antarctica
32:18might be part
32:20of an unknown structure.
32:21In 2018,
32:23a journalist
32:24named Linda Howe
32:25interviewed someone
32:26who was a first lieutenant commander
32:28with Naval Special Operations.
32:30And he claimed
32:30that in August 2003,
32:32he and his team
32:33were sent out
32:34to the southeast coast
32:35of Antarctica
32:35to investigate
32:37a structure sticking up
32:3818 feet out of the ice.
32:40When they went inside,
32:42they supposedly saw
32:42an illuminated space
32:43with walls that had
32:45a bunch of intricate symbols
32:46on them.
32:46But they didn't look like
32:48any hieroglyphics
32:49we would be familiar with.
32:53In the 1982
32:54John Carpenter classic
32:56The Thing,
32:57a team of scientists
32:58in Antarctica
32:59discover an alien spacecraft
33:01and encounter
33:02a fearsome extraterrestrial being
33:04that wreaks havoc
33:05on their research station.
33:07Whether or not
33:08what we're seeing
33:09on the Larson Sea ice shelf
33:10is something to be feared,
33:12it certainly merits
33:13more investigation.
33:18Is this remarkable rectangle
33:20just random
33:21or proof
33:22of sacred geometry?
33:24I tend to think
33:25that throughout the universe,
33:26you are going to find
33:27different kinds of geometries,
33:29but they're not sacred.
33:32So what does science say
33:33about our red rectangular nebula?
33:36Well, for one thing,
33:37despite its name,
33:38it's not a rectangle.
33:40It's an X.
33:43My personal point of view
33:44is that we're looking
33:46at a double star system,
33:49two neutron stars
33:49rotating around each other.
33:51Each star has a north pole
33:53and a south pole,
33:54and when they circulate
33:55around each other,
33:57it creates the illusion
33:58of an X.
33:59The star at the center
34:01could actually be two stars
34:03that orbit each other.
34:05Left to themselves,
34:07the forces of nature
34:07can randomly create
34:09some remarkable shapes
34:10the human mind interprets
34:12as intentional,
34:14especially with ice.
34:15Look at this iceberg
34:16that bears a striking resemblance
34:18to Batman,
34:20or this ice grim reaper
34:22created by a winter storm
34:23in Ontario.
34:25And as for our rectangle?
34:27In this case,
34:28we're looking at
34:29a tabular iceberg.
34:30It takes hundreds of years
34:32for this iceberg
34:33to become flat
34:34through wind and storms
34:36that have moved
34:37through the area.
34:37For that reason,
34:39when a rift happens,
34:41the rift will often create
34:42those rectangular cuts
34:44that we see.
34:46The rift probably happened
34:48two, three,
34:49maybe four years ago.
34:50The reason we have
34:52such sharp 90-degree angles
34:53is because it hasn't
34:55been weathered enough.
34:56In other words,
34:57this tabular iceberg
34:58is too young.
34:59Over time,
35:00wind and weather
35:01will reshape it
35:02into something
35:03less than perfect.
35:04The wind,
35:06the waves,
35:07the sea spray
35:07has not taken a toll
35:08on those sharp edges.
35:15Our verdict?
35:16Natural young iceberg.
35:19As for the geometry,
35:20it's certainly impressive.
35:22But sacred?
35:24That's up to you.
35:27Deep in the Himalayan mountains,
35:30more than 16,000 feet
35:32above sea level
35:33is a secluded body of water
35:35that some call
35:36Skeleton Lake.
35:37Why Skeleton Lake?
35:39Well, that's the mystery.
35:421942.
35:44Chamoli,
35:45Utharakhand, India.
35:46A forest ranger
35:48is patrolling
35:48along Rupkund Lake
35:50in the Himalayan mountains
35:51when he discovers
35:53something disturbing.
35:54Photos from his moment
35:56of discovery
35:56aren't available,
35:57but here's something better.
36:00This is recent footage
36:02of skeletal remains
36:03scattered throughout the site.
36:05There are anywhere
36:07from 300 to 800
36:09human skeletons here,
36:11and no one's quite sure why.
36:13Was it some ancient massacre?
36:15A bizarre disaster?
36:17When I saw
36:19the skeletal remains,
36:20it was a mystery
36:21to be solved.
36:22We wanted to know
36:24more about them,
36:26like why these skeletons
36:27are lying out there
36:29in such a huge number.
36:31We do not exactly know
36:33how many individuals
36:35are there.
36:35The area around the lake
36:37has been excavated
36:38and studied
36:39by researchers
36:40for years,
36:41but no one
36:42has unlocked
36:42its secrets.
36:44One theory
36:45is that the skeletons
36:46at the lake
36:46actually belong
36:47to dead soldiers,
36:48and we've seen
36:49something similar
36:50in a different area
36:51of India.
36:52In 2014,
36:53literally hundreds
36:54of skeletons
36:55were discovered
36:56at the bottom
36:56of a well in Punjab.
36:58Experts found
36:58that those skeletons
36:59actually belonged
37:00to Indian soldiers
37:01who had been executed
37:02by British forces
37:03following a mutiny
37:04in 1857.
37:07Mass graves
37:08have been discovered
37:09around the world
37:10as murderous regimes
37:12have tried to cover up
37:13their war crimes.
37:14An act of war
37:15isn't the only theory.
37:17Some actually believe
37:18that the skeletons
37:19belong to people
37:20who are victims
37:21of a natural disaster,
37:22specifically a hailstorm.
37:24The deadliest hailstorm
37:26on record occurred
37:27in northern India
37:28in April 1888.
37:29Some 246 people died,
37:32and the hailstones
37:33were said to be
37:34as big as oranges.
37:35Could something similar
37:37have happened
37:37to the people
37:37who ended up
37:38at Skeleton Lake?
37:42There's a growing concern
37:43about theft
37:44at Rubekund Lake.
37:46Tourists have been swiping
37:47skeletal souvenirs
37:48from the site.
37:49Experts say
37:50that if the bones
37:51aren't protected,
37:51they may gradually vanish
37:53in the years to come.
37:55But how did these bones
37:56get there in the first place?
37:58Let's ask our experts.
38:03A 2019 forensic examination
38:06of the remains
38:07revealed even more mysteries.
38:09They did a study
38:10that included
38:11radiocarbon dating
38:12and DNA.
38:13And what they found
38:14was there were males,
38:16females,
38:17and some died
38:18just a few hundred years ago,
38:20and some died
38:21more than a thousand.
38:22Also, the vast majority
38:24come from South Asia.
38:25However, there is
38:26some DNA
38:27from people
38:28that originated in Crete,
38:30which is thousands
38:31of miles away.
38:32But what force
38:33could have taken
38:34so many lives
38:35from such wide-ranging locations
38:37and time periods?
38:39Most myths are born
38:41out of a fragment of truth.
38:42In this case,
38:43it may be that this area
38:45has a lot of hailstorms.
38:47And in 2004,
38:49an expedition went
38:50to this location
38:51and they found deep fissures
38:53on their heads
38:54and their skulls
38:55and on their upper bodies,
38:57likely caused
38:58from a tremendous hailstorm.
39:00And that's probably
39:01what killed them.
39:03India is notorious
39:04for having very large hail,
39:06hail that spans from
39:07two to four inches
39:08in diameter.
39:10Imagine baseballs
39:11falling from the sky.
39:12That can create
39:13a lot of damage
39:14to someone's property
39:15or even lead
39:17to the loss of life.
39:18You can see the terrain
39:19is that it's very rugged.
39:21You've got ice
39:21on all four sides here,
39:23which means when it gets
39:24a little bit warmer,
39:25some of that ice melts.
39:26And then you'll get
39:27a lot of avalanches
39:29or landslide debris.
39:30All those people
39:31down below
39:32or up near the top,
39:33they'd all be just carried
39:34or buried instantly
39:36down in that area
39:37at the bottom of the lake.
39:38So the evidence
39:40points to this lake
39:41being a place
39:43that's killed people
39:44across different eras
39:45and from wildly
39:46different places,
39:48almost as though
39:49it carries a curse.
39:51When you have people
39:52from different places
39:54and different centuries,
39:56there's a possibility
39:57that there were
39:58different causes of death.
40:00So there's more research
40:01that needs to be done.
40:03As to why these bones
40:04have been arranged in piles,
40:06that's one part
40:07of this mystery
40:08we can solve.
40:09It's clear to me
40:10that people in the past
40:12have taken those bones together
40:14and just stacked them
40:15out of maybe reverence form.
40:25Our verdict?
40:26Deadly hail.
40:28And by the way,
40:30some have wondered
40:30if the discovery
40:31of Greek DNA here
40:33comes from descendants
40:34of Alexander the Great's
40:36invasion of India,
40:37but the evidence
40:38doesn't support that.
40:39So for now,
40:40the research continues.
40:42But what do you think?
