00:00Out is this look. The look that was part of a revolution. Coloured cricket gear.
00:06This is the new look. Stripes and lots of white.
00:10The only trouble is that the new creation by designer Mel Clifford has met with a mixed reception.
00:15I think the only complaints today is we've got the Australian guys in the West Indies in the English gear
00:20as well to show it off.
00:21But I think generally it's been accepted fairly well.
00:25The concern is over the amount of white up against a white cricket ball.
00:28Other than that, they're visually very attractive.
00:32Australia with the green and gold, West Indies maroon, and the English colours red, white and blue, modelled by an
00:38unhappy Ross Edwards.
00:40The biggest change is in the jumper, where the cable stitch has disappeared.
00:45According to designer Clifford, the new outfits won't suffer the same reaction as the yellow, pink and blue World Series
00:51gear, thought by some to be effeminate.
00:55I think this gives it a combination of tennis and baseball. It's a very active sport look, which is what
01:01we're after.
01:01You don't think Dougie Walters is going to get a few wolf whistles off the hill, do you?
01:05I doubt it. No, I think the stuff looks great.
01:08And when you see it en masse on the whole Australian team on the field, all in the yellow and
01:12green, I think it'll look terrific.
01:13Now all we await is the official seal of approval by the Englishman.
01:18But whatever it is, it's too late now.
01:22The English team were the first to arrive.
01:25Next, the Australians, in an assortment of fashion and no uniform.
01:29A few players mingled, but generally the feeling was icy.
01:34Then came the Cavaliers of cricket, the West Indies.
01:37The ice was broken, or so it seemed.
01:40It was a gentleman's standoff, even though there was an undercurrent of bad feeling over the Englishman's refusal to adopt
01:46some of the new one-day innovations.
01:49Well, who is running the game?
01:52We think that these things are not particularly good for cricket, and they're not tried.
01:56We haven't had the chance to try several of these things.
01:58And that's why we've taken the stand that we have taken.
02:02We'll be running out in the striped here, so will the West Indies, but the Englishman won't.
02:06Do you see any advantage or disadvantage in that?
02:08Not particularly. We probably look a bit better, that's all.
02:11Later at the Channel 9 studios, the three teams gathered for a group photograph.
02:16The Englishman were in a light-hearted mood.
02:18Derek Randall, the clown prince, had his jaw viced up.
02:22But as one Australian team member muttered, he can still talk.
02:26Finally, the historic photograph.
02:28The Australians and the Englishman on one side, with the West Indies in the middle.
02:33Someone described it as a diplomatic move.
02:36OK, so let's get to the game.
02:38It was a day-nighter.
02:39The date was the 27th of November 1979, and it was the very first official game after the World Series
02:45split.
02:46Australia took on the might of the West Indies.
02:48Both sides boasted some of the greats.
02:50For Australia, Lily, Chapel, Marsh, Border and Hooks.
02:54For the West Indies, Richards, Lloyd, Garner, Roberts and Holding.
02:58Australia won the toss and sent the West Indies in.
03:01Greenwich and Haynes opened the batting, while Dennis Lilly took the new white ball.
03:11Gone!
03:13So that's the end of Gordon Greenwich.
03:18The cutter of stumps.
03:21And Lilly has struck the first blow with Greenwich bold.
03:28West Indies 1-4-6.
03:30It's a beautiful delivery from Dennis Lilly.
03:33Gordon Greenwich coming onto the front foot, but Lilly finding the gap between that batting pad.
03:38And I'm certain that Dennis Lilly, if he moves that marker again, has a similar result.
03:43He'll keep on doing it, but you can see that ball move distinctively off the wicket and clean up those
03:49stumps.
03:50Beautiful delivery.
03:51And then Pascoe to come in for his third.
03:54Of course, the sixth over of the West Indies innings.
04:00Going to Vivian Richards.
04:04Oh, and there's a lovely drive through the covers by Richards.
04:08Richards just ambling up the wicket, anticipating it goes for four runs, and it does just that.
04:14But Lilly, starting now his fourth over.
04:17One for five before this.
04:22And that's...
04:23Given out, like before.
04:26Misjudgment there by Richards.
04:29Ball not short enough to pull.
04:30And Lilly coming down the wicket and appealing and getting the wicket of Richards.
04:35And Lilly is struck again.
04:37It's two for 14.
04:39Great start by the Australians.
04:41And this ball far too up.
04:42Pitch far too up for Richards to pull.
04:44And you can see him caught plumb in front in no man's land.
04:54Rodney Hogg.
04:57Rodney Hogg.
04:59Goodness me.
05:06Greg Cheprel.
05:07Pretty useful medium pace.
05:13That's a little gift, the first ball.
05:19And that's called him round his legs.
05:21He's got to the sweep.
05:23And Alan Ford has got water.
05:24Austerlio wanted.
05:25He's got the breakthrough.
05:26An attempted sweep by Desmond Haynes.
05:29Missed it and pulled him round his legs.
05:33Haynes putting his punt foot way too far across there.
05:36You can see that he leaves his leg stump open.
05:39And down it goes.
05:42Catch!
05:43Whoa!
05:44That went straight through his hands from Claude Lloyd.
05:48He hit it pretty hard.
05:51It wasn't easy to take him for Alan Borda.
05:55But he could so easily have been a wicket.
05:57Lloyd really drives the ball very hard.
06:00Straight back at the bowler.
06:02And you get a good example of that.
06:06And he has got it.
06:08He's got a quarter ball.
06:09He's got 49.
06:154 for 112.
06:18Okay, Turan looking to hit that one straight down the ground.
06:23Not quite getting to the pitch of it.
06:25You see Borda delivering it from wide out.
06:28And Turan coming down the wicket.
06:31Putting it back.
06:32Head high.
06:33And a good catch from Alan Borda.
06:35The Borda for Lloyd.
06:35He's out.
06:36Caught behind.
06:37Lloyd knows.
06:38Borda's third wicket.
06:41And Marsh jubilant there taking the catch.
06:44Lloyd is out for 16.
06:46The West Indies now 5 for 117.
06:48And in some trouble.
06:50Alan Borda in his 7th over.
06:52Now has 3 for 20.
06:54Just outside the line of the off stump.
06:57And Clive Lloyd trying to give himself a room.
07:00And trying to smash that ball through the vacant point area.
07:03And he succeeded in getting a touch to it.
07:06And Rodney Marsh doing the rest.
07:08Taking it and jumping jubilantly into the air.
07:14And that's gone.
07:15That's a typical Colise King shot.
07:17He's got 4 runs for it.
07:19And here's Alan Borda's last ball.
07:2310 overs.
07:24And this is the last ball of his 10th over.
07:273 wickets well bowled.
07:30And that's gone into the outfield.
07:32And that could be 4 it is.
07:41He can deliver a good bouncer when he's ready.
07:46Rousing the crowd there.
07:50Derek Murray.
07:52Murray ducking safely underneath it.
07:55Plenty of time.
07:55And not a real venomous bouncer.
07:58You can see Rod Marsh takes it.
08:01Only knee high.
08:04Field being spread out for King.
08:06Derek Chepel.
08:07Prepared to give him the single.
08:10Try and stop the 4.
08:12Only 4 men in there.
08:14Trying to sell the single.
08:20And there's trouble here.
08:222 men up there.
08:23All sorts of confusion.
08:53And eventually the bats can get in.
08:55Ball just about to come in.
08:56You can see King looking at the field.
08:58The ball coming in.
09:00Hitting Marsh.
09:01In fact, he ended up hitting the stumps.
09:03He was showing off.
09:05So it was lucky that King did hold his ground, Tony.
09:10Dropped it.
09:13And it would have been out there too as well, I reckon.
09:16So a double chance off one delivery.
09:21Yes, things certainly happening now.
09:24Return catch from Rodney Hogg.
09:26Just stuck out the left hand and not carrying, not staying there.
09:30Turned coming in the field.
09:31Coming in the fieldsman.
09:33Ball in.
09:35And it's 6.164 now.
09:38With Carlos King gone.
09:39Ball Pascoe.
09:40It's Pascoe's first wicket at a cost of 19 runs.
09:44Goal Pascoe's 21.
09:466 for 1.64.
09:47Well, Pascoe bowling a perfectly straight delivery.
09:50King trying to murder it.
09:51And, of course, paying the penalty.
09:52Hitting right across the line.
09:54Middle stunt right out of the ground.
09:58Oh, there was a real haymaker, that one.
10:04Balled.
10:04Derek Murray has gone.
10:07Goal Pascoe, 27.
10:097 for 177.
10:11The Australians are on top here.
10:13They've done well on what is a perfect batting pitch.
10:16A great piece of bowling by Lenny Pascoe.
10:19Dead straight.
10:20And once more, he hits that middle stump.
10:21And, really, you can't ask for more.
10:23He's bowled a good line and a good length.
10:26And if you keep it straight and the batsmen have got to force it,
10:29when they miss it, you've got to wicket.
10:31And that's what happened to Lenny Pascoe.
10:39Extraordinary sight.
10:42And, in fact, he's going to get two runs for it.
10:48Patlus.
10:506 for 1.64.
10:51And now it's 7 for 1.87.
11:01That's a run-out by a long, long way.
11:03Garner made his ground.
11:05Well, he hurtled down that pitch at the speed of sound.
11:10But, unfortunately, he hadn't taken into account that his partner, Andy Roberts,
11:14was watching where the ball had gone,
11:15which was straight into Rodney Marsh's glove.
11:18So, there's a run-out there on 187, which is the Australians' devil's number.
11:25And he scored 610 runs.
11:30That's in the air.
11:31And there's a very good chance that will be out.
11:33It's nicely judged out there by Rick McCosker.
11:37And nine wickets are down now for 193.
11:43Holding out for two.
11:45Cord McCosker by Pascoe.
11:46Lenny Pascoe has three wickets.
11:48And Roberts is 16 not out.
12:02Oh, that is the end of the West Indies' innings for 193.
12:06This is how it came about.
12:08Lenny Pascoe knocking over the last man, Andy Roberts.
12:14I think they lost their way a little bit.
12:16They finished up with 193.
12:18And even though they lost some wickets in the middle,
12:21I thought they still should have got over the 200 mark.
12:23But still, they've got a fine, fast following attack.
12:25And Irving Rosenwater tells me that the Australian run rate needed is 3.88 per over to win.
12:33So, we'll be back at 7 o'clock to resume this telecast
12:37when the Australians will be batting in their chase for 194 for victory in this B&H World Series Cup.
12:44We have a change of bowling.
12:47It's...
12:50Croft for Roberts.
12:53And what a beautiful shot from Bruce Laird.
12:57Do you like that?
12:58Good shot, that, Ian.
12:59No doubt about that.
13:06And that's Queen Bowl.
13:07Beat him with the Yorker.
13:09The middle stump flying out of the ground.
13:12And Bruce Laird beaten probably by pace and a very good delivery indeed.
13:18Bruce Laird perhaps looking to hit that one across on the onside a little.
13:21Yes, we see him hitting across the line of the delivery,
13:25particularly as Croft bowls from out wide.
13:27He's trying to hit it through the onside.
13:29Misses, loses middle stump.
13:33And he's gone through him again.
13:35There's an appeal.
13:38Not out, says the umpire.
13:41And Greg Chappell puts both hands on his hips
13:43and looks as though to say,
13:44how dare you appeal against me.
13:47It's good evening, Adelaide.
13:48And good evening, Greg Chappell.
13:49He's got two very good deliveries from Colin Croft.
13:53Croft, you see,
13:55he's had a couple of Mexican jumping beans for dinner.
13:59Very excited about that,
14:01but Rocky Harris, the umpire, most unmoved.
14:04Greg Chappell is still there,
14:06yet to get off the mark.
14:10And he does it in the most beautiful style one could expect.
14:15Bang, straight back, past the wicket,
14:17four runs all the way.
14:19Super shot from Greg Chappell.
14:23Beautiful shot, four runs.
14:26Superb shot, typical Greg Chappell drive.
14:29The second we've seen from him,
14:30one straight and now,
14:32one down the ground.
14:33And he's gone this time.
14:35Caught behind Alan Borda.
14:42So that's 3,452.
14:45Alan Borda, flirting outside that off stump.
14:53And it's hit past Roberts.
14:55Through his hands, in fact.
14:57And will go all the way, I think.
15:02West Indians are not quite as adept at that slading tackle
15:05as the Australians are.
15:16That's one of the best shots we've seen in this match.
15:20Wasn't all that short.
15:22But I thought, Richie,
15:23there might be some justification for Glyph
15:24to perhaps move one of those fields
15:26a bit straighter there
15:26and perhaps try and lock off that one.
15:29They're getting one a ball at the moment.
15:33Straight hit.
15:34It's right up into the crowd.
15:36Many a mile up onto the hill.
15:39Beautifully timed.
15:42Super shot that from Kim Hughes.
15:51Just hang in there, son, until we win.
15:55That's the advice from Greg Chappell.
15:56He wasn't quite there.
15:57Oh, that is a magnificent shot.
15:59He hit that beautifully in the middle of the back
16:01and it's gone 10 rows up into the hill.
16:03Really a fine shot.
16:04Beautifully timed by Kim Hughes.
16:06Down the wicket.
16:08Right underneath it.
16:09Followed through and...
16:10Oh.
16:12Magnificent shot.
16:18There's a controlled...
16:21There's a controlled run from Kim Hughes.
16:25It also brings up his personal half-centry.
16:28Kim Hughes on to 52.
16:3251 runs required.
16:34He's made 52.
16:35And there's an appeal again.
16:37In fact, he's gone.
16:38It's been bowling.
16:39Here's Richard.
16:40And that's a wicket that the West Indies really needed.
16:44Kim Hughes just passing his personal...
16:4715, 52 in fact.
16:49And then Viv Richards breaking through.
16:52David Hooks getting a marvellous reception from the crowd as he came out.
16:56Very popular cricketer.
16:57He's an attacking stroke maker.
17:00As the crowd loves.
17:02He's been in tremendous form.
17:04And we see some of his young and better fans there.
17:09David probably plays natural game as the best thing for him.
17:19I just hope that he doesn't get too carried away with a crowd reaction.
17:22He's a marvellous stroke maker.
17:23But he's got time to play a few deliveries.
17:26Get his eye in.
17:28Pick the loose one if it's there and put it away.
17:34And there's an appeal.
17:35And he's gone.
17:36He's missed it.
17:36And he's clean bowled.
17:37What a bad shot here by this young man, David Hooks, in this situation.
17:42Sweeping the ball off the wickets.
17:44Middleston going back.
17:49And that's a good shot.
17:55Big Joe Garner.
17:56They're going to go back for the third.
17:58And that's going to be Greg Jeffers, 50.
18:03A good half centre there from the Australian skipper when things looked bad.
18:06And he came in.
18:13And that's India.
18:14It's gone down.
18:15It's four runs.
18:19Dropping it short.
18:20And Greg Chappell swinging it down back for the score for four.
18:25Greg Chappell in top form.
18:28Just kicking that one off his hip.
18:30Two bounces into the boundary.
18:35Couldn't make the winning hit.
18:39Not this time.
18:40Yes, it is.
18:41It's gone through Claude Lloyd.
18:42It's gone down to the boundary.
18:44Engulfed in a swarm of spectators.
18:47Australia have won this first Benson & Hedges World Series Cup match by five wickets.
18:54Greg Chappell finishing the 74.
18:59And a fine victory for the Australians to start this season of international matches.
19:06Guys.
