01:00They were in the ground right before the players even got to the ground.
01:03They've been watching them warm up, and I can tell you the atmosphere is electric.
01:08The flags are flying, particularly the Sri Lankan flags, and it just seems to me that
01:13we're in for a tremendous game.
01:15The weather?
01:15Well, it's going to be around about 30 degrees today, and I suspect that humidity is going
01:20to be pretty high.
01:21In fact, the information is that it's going to be around 78%, and there are showers forecast
01:26for later in the day.
01:28So that's the situation here.
01:30Today's match is a big one.
01:31Sri Lanka play against India, and I can tell you their head-to-head stats are interesting.
01:36They've played 40 times.
01:3862% of those have been won by India and 32% by Sri Lanka, although recently the Sri Lankans
01:45have had an edge on them.
01:46They won twice in the World Cup, and of course they then lost in Singapore when the Indians
01:52were successful.
01:53Two good sides, though.
01:55It should be a good game.
01:56The pitch, very important in contests like this one.
01:59It's been good so far.
02:00Let's see what Ravi Shastri has to say.
02:03The conditions for what promises to be a cracking game in today's single World Series
02:08Cup between World Champions Sri Lanka and India look to be in good order.
02:12The outfield seems to be a lot drier, and that's because we've not had much rain over
02:15the last couple of days.
02:17But still, overall, it'll be on the slower side.
02:19As far as the pitch goes, it looks nice and firm, and there's very little moisture in
02:23the surface.
02:23So there shouldn't be much help for the pass boners, both by way of movement in the air
02:27or off the wicket.
02:28As the game progresses, this wicket should ease out into a good batting track, albeit on
02:33the slower side.
02:34So I still think the team that will win the toss would look to bat first.
02:38Ravi Shastri suggesting the team that wins the toss bats first.
02:41I wonder if Sashan Tendorka, if he wins the toss, will do what Mohamed Azra did.
02:46I doubt it very much.
02:47I think he probably will bat first.
02:49Anyhow, Ian Chappell is out in the centre with the captains.
02:52Where you go, John?
02:53Here we are.
02:54Point.
02:56Captain.
02:57Heads and taper.
03:02Heads.
03:04Heads with it.
03:05Heads.
03:06Yeah, we'd like to bat.
03:08Okay, nice start of the captains.
03:09You're winning the toss, eh?
03:10Definitely.
03:11I mean, of course, I won the toss, and I feel it's going to, the wicket is going to break
03:16a little bit, so we're taking the advantage of batting first.
03:19Okay.
03:19Looking forward to the challenge of captaincy?
03:22Very much.
03:22I'm very looking forward to it, and hopefully things will go right.
03:25Yeah.
03:26The guys got the better of you twice in the World Cup.
03:28You're hoping to turn that around, obviously, in this competition.
03:31Definitely.
03:31They came and beat us in India, so we'd like to come here.
03:34And now that we're here, we'd definitely like to beat them.
03:37All right.
03:37Good luck for today's match.
03:38Thank you very much.
03:39Arjuna, a lot of expectation on you here as World Cup champions.
03:43How much does that put some pressure on the team?
03:45Especially with the younger ones, but we have spoken to them, and this is just another game.
03:50Just take it as another game.
03:51Forget about what we did in the past, especially recent past, the World Champions.
03:55We'll start from the bottom and try and win the tournament.
03:59You've always preferred to chase.
04:00Quite happy chasing here under the lights?
04:02Yeah, I don't think there won't be a big difference on the wicket.
04:05It might get a little slower, but with the wicket, it might settle down.
04:09You never know.
04:09This is the first time we are playing after a long, long time, so I hope that it will be
04:13good for us.
04:13Okay, good luck then.
04:15Well, Sachin Tendulkar, captaining India for the first time, has won the toss, and he's decided to bat first.
04:21What a great way to start as captain.
04:23India, therefore, batting first.
04:25Tendulkar at the top of the list.
04:27Tadeja in there with him at number one.
04:29Muhammad Azridan down to bat at number three.
04:31Ganguly has a good time in England, and he's down at four.
04:35Vino Cambly back in the side.
04:36Rahul Dravid.
04:38Ashish Kapoor.
04:39Nayan Mongia, the waykeeper.
04:42Javagal Shinath.
04:43Again, a lot depends on him.
04:44And, of course, Anil Kimli as well.
04:46Very important part of the side.
04:48Venkatesh, the side making up the 11.
04:51So that's the Indian line-up.
04:52The Sri Lankans, who are getting a big cheer as they come out onto the ground.
04:56Arjuna Ranatunga, obviously captain.
04:58However, that tremendous opening partnership.
05:01Jaya Saririn, Kaloo with Orana.
05:03Gurusinga comes in next.
05:05Aravinda De Silva.
05:06Oh, he played so well in the World Cup.
05:08Can he continue it here?
05:10Hashan Tilakaratna.
05:11Roshan Mahanama.
05:13And, of course, even Kumara Dharmasina.
05:16That batting depth is unbelievable.
05:18Chimindavis.
05:19Murali Dharan with his off-spinners.
05:21And Bravendra Pushpakamara making up the side.
05:27Skipper.
05:29And it's going to go for it.
05:30And it slips.
05:34It's going to bounce there for Pushpakamara.
05:36First run's coming off the bat.
05:41It's four for north.
05:47Chalvezia off the mark.
05:49Oh, that's a good shot from Niduru.
05:52And he's asked for the replay.
05:55Umpire Buckner.
05:55I think he could be in trouble.
05:57I think you're right, Dian.
05:59Just seeing the reaction of the Sri Lankan team.
06:01They're rushing towards Guru Senge.
06:03It was a lovely piece of fielding.
06:06Chalvezia was on the run the moment he hit the ball.
06:09Guru Senge at mid-on.
06:11One-handed pick-up.
06:12And in one action, throwing down the stumps.
06:16And Chalvezia out of his ground.
06:18So India lose their first wicket.
06:21And the third umpire has now found the right button.
06:24And the crowd erupts.
06:27Chalvezia is not sure.
06:28Because he saw the green light go up first.
06:31And he thought he was safe.
06:33Sachin Tendulkar is actually telling him to stay there.
06:37The umpires are now conferring.
06:39But I think you'll find that he's gone.
06:42In fact, they're pulling out the walkie-talkie now.
06:50Yes, he's gone.
06:51And India has done just that.
07:00In three and a half days, but he showed a very good temperament.
07:04And this is how India lost that first wicket.
07:07Magnificent pick-up and throw from Guru Senge.
07:23Well, there's a spring in the stride of the Sri Lankans.
07:27Captain leading by example.
07:30Terrific stop there.
07:35In fact, both Waz and Pushbukmara have been getting quite a bit of bounce on this very
07:39placid pitch.
07:43That's all fielded again.
07:44Beautifully done.
07:46Partuna runner, Tunga, is fielding like a young whippet out there.
07:52Well, he's one of the old boys with a sigh.
07:54That's brought a smile to his face.
07:56That's two now.
07:56He's stopped absolutely brilliantly.
07:59I think he's mate there.
08:00It looks as if it's...
08:01Who's that having a little chat to him taking the mickey out of him?
08:04I think it might be Jaya Saria wandering past him and saying,
08:07Captain, what's come over you?
08:10Glasses go in one direction, but he stopped it.
08:16Spread of the wicket they're going for it.
08:17This could hit the studs.
08:18Oh, he would have had him.
08:19That could have been gone.
08:20That was nearly all over for Tendulkar.
08:22Not a very good call.
08:24Jaya Saria knows that was a great...
08:26There's a little master.
08:32The Tendulkar, let's have another look at it.
08:35And that's Jaya Saria, pouncing on that one.
08:38The Sri Lankan fielders everywhere.
08:40And Tendulkar struggling away.
08:43A good two feet short of the crazy that had struck.
08:47Certainly a lucky one for him.
08:50Have a look at his record.
08:51Almost 40 is batting.
08:55He's had a go.
08:56That one into the gap again.
08:57That's where he's so good.
08:59It's going to go to the fence.
09:02That's the first boundary.
09:03The great thing about this little fella is when he hits him, he hits him into the gap.
09:09That's the second time he's got a short ball outside off stump.
09:12And it's the second time he's hit it, straight into the middle of that gap.
09:16Tendulkar making use of every possible opportunity.
09:20Pushpukwara giving him the width.
09:22Tendulkar bisecting the two fielders in the ring.
09:31Well, that's a good shot.
09:32He's got it away on the onside.
09:34Whooped it over the infield.
09:35Bouncing down towards the fence for four.
09:37That's the second one.
09:38So Tendulkar is beginning to cut loose.
09:43Tendulkar realising the only way he could get through the Sri Lankan field is to go through
09:48on the aerial route and hits him over the infield.
09:51Ball pitched up to him.
09:53Right in the slot.
09:55Tendulkar making no mistake with that one.
09:58One bounce.
10:05That was nice timing.
10:06He was waiting for excellently in the one-day game in particular.
10:12Oh, he's in the air and just passed him.
10:15Dharmasena straight away getting the ball to turn.
10:18It was popped back to him.
10:20His fingers were outstretched.
10:22Rasping in the air.
10:23Hoping to latch onto it.
10:25But he never really got near to it.
10:26Let's have another look at it.
10:28Says Ganguly would be tied down for a long, long time.
10:31Trying to go after Dharmasena.
10:33The first ball itself just eluding Dharmasena's outstretched hands.
10:41Yes, this is not going to be easy for the left-hander.
10:43The ball will be spinning away from him.
10:45He'll be bowling for the left-hander again.
10:48Ganguly on strike.
10:50That's well played.
10:51It's a full toss.
10:52It's running away down towards the wicket fences.
10:55Field has quickened up a little bit since last time we were here.
10:58That's lovely timing.
11:01Ganguly getting that one away into the gap and all the way along the ground.
11:05That's Ganguly taking full use of the flight delivery on the one side by Dharmasena.
11:12Maximum points for him.
11:14On the full.
11:16Picking the gap.
11:17Beating Gurusenga.
11:18Standing fairly straight.
11:23And his figures today, six overs, two maidens, none for seven.
11:26That's excellent bowling.
11:31And that's got past the diving fieldsman.
11:34Another boundary to Sachin Tendulkar.
11:41Murali Durant trying to bowl on his legs, which he has done on a number of occasions whenever he's played
11:45against Tendulkar.
11:47But this time, Tendulkar had the best out of it.
11:51And was down the legs.
11:52And it's very fine.
11:53I think it's very well placed, very well controlled stroke from Tendulkar.
11:58And great effort from Dharmasena.
12:01Tendulkar has supplied that money.
12:05It's a good side.
12:12Gurusenga may have just hurt himself.
12:15Great effort here from Gurusenga.
12:17Very well placed stroke by Ganguly.
12:19He had to drive to his left.
12:21It's not an easy thing to do.
12:22But he's done a wonderful job for Sridh Lankar here.
12:26In my 20 years career, I only played 86 one days.
12:33That's beautifully struck.
12:36Lovely shot there from Ganguly.
12:37Obviously a lot stronger on the offside than he is through the onside.
12:41And it's a well-plighted delivery.
12:44It wasn't a bad delivery to Wolves.
12:46But he beat himself.
12:48Okay.
12:49Go, mate.
12:49Go, lads.
12:56Excellent shot again.
12:58Nine in the gap.
12:58So, Ganguly now starting to move things along as India have gone past the half-century.
13:08He's gone.
13:10Dharmasena, I think, was bowling for that.
13:13He'd already got Ganguly to hit the balls in the air on the offside.
13:17And finally, he did away with him.
13:20Taken by Aravinda Da Silva.
13:24Good piece of bowling from Dharmasena.
13:26He switched from round two over the wicket.
13:29And I think the ball really didn't come on to the back very nicely.
13:32I think he stopped a little bit and spun.
13:34And he hurried for the stroke.
13:36And a good catch taken by Aravinda Da Silva diving to his left.
13:39A good break for Cheadlansha.
13:45It's 57 for two.
13:49This is how India lost their second wicket.
13:52Just beaten in the flight a little bit.
13:55Ganguly.
13:55And the catch well taken by Aravinda Da Silva.
14:02Oh, a chance gone begging there for Kalu with Arana.
14:08Tenduka beaten outside off stump.
14:13It's a bad miss here.
14:16Because Tenduka came down the wicket.
14:18And he was well, well down the wicket.
14:24Where you might find in the middle stages of the innings,
14:29ones coming in ones and twos.
14:30And on that occasion, Tenduka really had to hurry.
14:33Because if that had hit the stumps,
14:34he again could have been out of his ground.
14:36And he knows it.
14:38I think he would have been gone again.
14:39And once more it was Jaya Saria,
14:40who very nearly caught him napping.
14:43Arana, just have a look at this.
14:45Again, he gets rid of it very quickly.
14:46I reckon he would have had him and it hit the stumps.
14:48Have a look at that.
14:49He's way out of his ground.
14:50And that would have been all over again.
14:51And have a look at Mitchley again.
14:52Beautifully placed.
14:55See him get out.
14:58In the air and just passed.
15:01Murali Duren.
15:01He tossed that one up a little more.
15:03Spun it a little more.
15:05You see a lot of shots being played like this,
15:08where the ball does go in the air.
15:09The ball is just not coming on to the bat.
15:12You might see him bowling in two spells.
15:22Well, that's brought up his off-century.
15:24Nudged it away down towards the fence.
15:26And despite the fact that it's taken for a while,
15:30Sashim Tendorka is just quietly pipped up on a half-century.
15:38Well, the question is, can he bowl another mate?
15:40Will this be out?
15:41Oh, he's missed it.
15:43Well, I think there was a yes and a no.
15:45Or was it just a yes from Muhammad Azradin?
15:49It didn't seem to me as if Tendorka wanted to run at any stage.
15:52We should be able to pick this up.
15:54I think he says no straight away.
15:56Azradin's committed.
15:57Has to get back.
15:58Had that been straight, it would have been out as well.
16:00That's three run-out chances they've actually missed.
16:07Oh, Jayseri is brilliant.
16:09Really is an exceptionally good cricketer.
16:15Jayseri once again, great positioning and throwing it on the run.
16:21His gator's attribute on the field is the way he positions himself.
16:29He might have just had an opportunity, but the throw was a little wide there from Mahanama.
16:37The Indians taking their chances.
16:39They have to take the odd risks with the singles as runs have not been easy to come by.
16:50Chance, but just wide of cover.
16:56Take them off, let's say it.
16:58The throw was just wide.
17:01So the batsman putting pressure on the Sri Lakin fielders, both Azar and Tendorka.
17:07Not really looking for the big ones.
17:09That's a reasonably good placement by Tendorka, just taking it over the close-in fielder.
17:18That's the throw coming wide.
17:26He decided he wants to change that.
17:29He was trying to go right over the boundary.
17:34The 15-0 has left.
17:36The Indians are looking for some big shots now.
17:40The boundaries are certainly what they want.
17:52Just wide of long on, but still can't reach the boundary.
17:57Azaruddin has got 25 of his 31 in boundaries.
18:01Sorry, in singles.
18:06Samur Lizaran giving it a little bit of flight.
18:08Azaruddin coming down the pitch.
18:10Trying to hark it over.
18:12At the commentary box in.
18:19Chance.
18:20Once again, the throw just misses the stance.
18:24So India still resorting to the singles, without really detracting or taking anything away from the Sri Lankan bullying.
18:33The very fact that batsmen of the calibre of Tendorka and Azaruddin are finding runs,
18:39and Sri Lanka would have to restrict India to a minimum sort of total.
18:45That's well struck.
18:46Just short of the road.
18:50The problem for India is, if they get a score of 220, it looks competitive on this pitch.
18:58But then they face the problem of trying to keep Kaluwadharana and Jayasuriya quiet.
19:04And if they get away to a flying start...
19:18They weren't going to go for a second on Jayasuriya until he fumbled.
19:21First arrived on the scene, one of the best.
19:25We hit that one high.
19:26That's going all the way.
19:28That's a big hit by Tendorka.
19:30Way over the top at deep log on.
19:32In the first six of the innings, I suspect they've now decided that they've got to start going.
19:40That's good a smile to his face anyhow.
19:43Brilliant stroke.
19:44Brilliant footwork here.
19:45He just came...
19:50...a stroke.
19:51And he just leaned into it.
19:52And beautiful shot over here from Sanjit Janturkar.
19:59Down the wicket he goes into the pitch.
20:02Bounces up to Murali Dharan.
20:07He goes into catch.
20:08I think he came down the wicket.
20:11And he uses the sweep here beautifully.
20:13And just hit the wicket down there and just one bounce straight to Murali.
20:18And I think Murali Dharan is bowling very well over here.
20:21Oh, he's got that one away.
20:22Is this going to be outcourt?
20:24Or will it go into the gap again?
20:25A slight mishit there.
20:31Interesting now to see whether he can land straight on a length again.
20:34This is Chimindabas.
20:38That's what played.
20:39Lovely drive from Mohamed Azrauddin.
20:41It's running away down to the extra cover boundary.
20:43I think that's his best shot today.
20:45He's pushed ones all over the place.
20:48And what's more, that brings up his off-centry.
20:51A lovely cover drive.
20:54Very well played.
20:55And a good 50 from Azrauddin to the 86 deliveries.
20:59And this will be well-fished up and lean into it.
21:02And really timed it beautifully.
21:04This was the best road he played today.
21:07And a very well-struck boundary from Azrauddin.
21:11Just leaning into it.
21:12And the sweet time of the ball.
21:14And this is what he's capable of.
21:18And I think the woman picked that.
21:22Well, there's a little stutter there.
21:24He's got to hit the stumps.
21:25He was out by Miles.
21:28Arjuna very upset with himself there.
21:30He had to hit the stumps.
21:31He had plenty of time to do it.
21:33Lined it up and missed him.
21:36Once again, they've decided whenever the ball is going to Udana Tunga,
21:39they're going to run for it.
21:41And direct throw would have done it here for Azrauddin.
21:49That's a slower delivery.
21:50And once again, a fumble by the keeper.
21:54Another sort of batsman just getting back to Kalou.
21:57There's the little off-cutter which has bowled decidedly slower.
22:01Oh, ever so close to that stump.
22:02And watch the ball spinning away to the keeper.
22:05Yes, those two Jaya Saria and Kalou with Arjuna.
22:09It's a good over again from Jaya Saria.
22:12He has bowled a number of times in this situation,
22:15especially in the slog overs.
22:17That's got him.
22:18He's outstuck.
22:19Down the wicket.
22:20Giving him a bit of room.
22:22Trying to float away on the offside.
22:23Mohamed Azrauddin is out.
22:25Jaya Saria is struck.
22:27His partner down the other end.
22:29Kalou with Arjuna.
22:30That time took the ball cleanly.
22:32The bails are off in a flash.
22:34And that has brought to an end a pretty productive partnership.
22:45So, Mohamed Azrauddin stumped for 58.
22:51So, Vinu Kambalis, the new batsman.
22:53186 for three.
22:5545 overs have been bowled.
22:59Tendulkar is still out there.
23:01He's on 98 at the moment.
23:05And that was the stumping.
23:06Way out of his ground.
23:07He had plenty of time.
23:08I think you might have just seen him coming down the pitch
23:11and left that one pretty wide.
23:13He took it nicely.
23:14And you can see he was stranded way down the pitch.
23:1699 balls for his 58.
23:27He's got it away.
23:28Did he get some bad on that one?
23:29He's down the other end.
23:32And that's his century.
23:34Sachin Tendulkar has scored his ninth century in one day internationals.
23:39135 balls faced.
23:42That's his second against Sri Lanka.
23:451-6 and 4-4s.
23:46That is very well played.
23:51Applause from the crowd here.
23:52No doubt a lot of Indians here to wish him well.
23:56Chaya Surya to the left-handed, Kamli.
24:00Played away on the onside.
24:01Will get only a single here.
24:03Sachin Tendulkar wanting the second.
24:04Pushing Kamli on.
24:05This is going to be a close call.
24:07But I think he's just made his ground.
24:11Steve Buckner asking for the third empire.
24:14And a hurried throw.
24:15As Guru Singh's throw came in very, very sharp.
24:19Straight onto the stumps.
24:21But Sachin certainly well home.
24:29Flick away on the onside by Kamli.
24:31This could go all the way to the fence for four.
24:33Yes, it does.
24:34So welcome down, boundary for India.
24:36And Kamli gets his first one.
24:38A very fine shot by Kamli.
24:40Devstoke play, really.
24:43Vaas trying slightly on our next time.
24:46Kamli moving inside, into the line of the ball.
24:49Flicking it away.
24:50Picking the gap.
24:52Very useful runs for India.
24:55Just drifting onto leg stump.
24:56Hi.
25:00Played away straight down the ground.
25:02Should get a couple of runs here.
25:11Ball pitched up that time.
25:12Driving down the pitch firmly.
25:18Right on the middle of the bat.
25:21And this time it smashed away over square leg and over the line for six.
25:25That's a terrific blow by Vinod Kamli.
25:28Really got stuck into that.
25:30Hitted many a mile over square leg.
25:31So after 48 overs, India 210 for free.
25:37This is very well played by Tendulkar.
25:40Fine on the onside.
25:42Might go all the way to the fence.
25:44Yes, it does.
25:45Using the pace of Jai Surya's delivery there, did Tendulkar.
25:48It's one like Tendulkar could do.
25:50Getting Jai Surya to goal where he really wants it.
25:54And letting the ball go on its way to the boundary.
26:01Full toss.
26:02Kambli can't get it away.
26:03Straight to Arvindad De Silva.
26:05And Tendulkar was wanting a single.
26:06He couldn't make his ground.
26:07A good throw there by little De Silva.
26:10Straight to Jai Surya.
26:11The Indian captain cannot make his ground.
26:13Fine innings comes to an end.
26:15India loses its fourth wicket.
26:17The 217 runs on the board.
26:24That's it.
26:25Tendulkar.
26:26Kambli driving to Arvindad De Silva.
26:28Backing a little too much.
26:30De Silva's throwing throw coming straight to the bowler.
26:34Tendulkar realizing he just cannot make it.
26:36But what a superb innings by a captain.
26:39A real responsible knock.
26:41And now with just six balls remaining.
26:43Raul Dravid, the new man in.
26:45Has no choice but to try and whack every ball.
26:49This is how Tendulkar got out.
26:52Tendulkar backing up a little too much.
26:54Looking for the run.
26:56Falling well short.
26:58So that was a fine inning.
27:04Swings it away on the onside.
27:06Only finds De Silva.
27:07There could be another run out here.
27:09Cyril Michli not meeting the third empire.
27:11Puts up his finger.
27:12So Kambli goes another run out.
27:16218 for five.
27:18A fine bit of fielding by Arvindad De Silva.
27:21Straight to him.
27:22Kambli running with the shot.
27:24Silva quickly picking up.
27:26Getting into position.
27:27Just watch his position.
27:28And a very accurate throw to Dharmaseyna.
27:31Dharmaseyna quickly dislodging the bails.
27:36Well that was a close call.
27:37Cyril Michli didn't call for the third empire.
27:48That's a throw coming in from De Silva.
27:52Just failing to make a round according to the quick.
27:56And that's a throw from De Silva again.
28:00And that time umpire Michli calling for the third empire.
28:04Seems to be pretty confident.
28:06But we'll have to take another look.
28:07Kalu with Rana.
28:08Again quickly out of his blocks.
28:10But I think Srinath just making his ground.
28:14But on that occasion Cyril Michli called for the third empire.
28:21Swung away by Dravid on the onside.
28:23I just found the gap.
28:25Jai Surya running around quickly.
28:27Restricting the batsman to only two.
28:29So just one ball remaining now.
28:31That was fine cricket.
28:33So the last delivery of the innings.
28:36Swung away by Dravid again.
28:37But straight to the man Guru Singh.
28:39But the Indians are going to run for the second run.
28:42In the end make it quite comfortably.
28:44So 2.26 for 5 after 50 overs.
28:48That's the Indian card.
28:49Tendul card.
28:50That master leaning the top.
28:52110 run out.
28:53And supported by Azaruddin.
28:5558.
28:56Sri Lankan fielding was spot on.
28:59They did give hardly anything away.
29:01And Kambli's run out.
29:02They are at 18.
29:04Certainly a very close one.
29:07Where it was 12th umpire.
29:08Michli may have called for the third umpire.
29:12The Sri Lankan bowling spot on.
29:14Good start by Voss and Pushpa Kumara.
29:17They kept the...
29:19They kept the opening batsman quiet.
29:21Well supported as well by the spinners.
29:23Mudli the run a good spell.
29:2410 overs for 42 runs.
29:26But Jai Surya doing a very good job.
29:2810 overs 1 for 39.
29:30He had to ball at the depth.
29:37And believe me.
29:39The fast bowlers of the world fear them.
29:41If they get going.
29:43They are dynamite.
29:44Says off-start.
29:48He's got that one over the infield.
29:49That's going down towards mid-wicket.
29:51He'll come back for another two.
29:53His little chirp shots work for him.
29:55He likes them straight.
29:57So that he can work it away on the onside.
29:59If he can get that leg cut at the hole just a bit.
30:01On around about off-stump or just south side.
30:04That's where you'll get into trouble.
30:06Once again.
30:07Second middle.
30:08And he's shifted over mid-wicket.
30:10A very well placed stroke.
30:11From Daluwe Tegna here.
30:13That's the way he likes to play.
30:14That's the way they're both opening batsmen are known for.
30:17And a very good start for Sri Lanka here.
30:19Very good over for Sri Lanka too.
30:24He's got that one away.
30:25It's flying away down over the top.
30:27It's gone all the way for six.
30:29What a magnificent shot by Jai Surya.
30:32That was short outside off-stump.
30:34But the first delivery he's received that was loose.
30:37And what does he do?
30:38He smashes it for six.
30:41You don't see this great shot in one day cricket or any kind of cricket.
30:45And he played it purposely.
30:47Like he just slashed it outside the off-stump over the rope.
30:49It's a great, great stroke from Jai Surya.
30:53Right.
30:53Here we go again.
30:57Oh, he's got to go at that one.
30:58That's a great shot.
30:59Oh, you see.
31:01All the way.
31:02Flat as a tack.
31:03It was about 10 meters from the fence.
31:06And I tell you what.
31:07It was screaming.
31:09Jai Surya has come alive.
31:11And so has the crowd.
31:13They're dancing in the aisles.
31:16What a player he is.
31:18This is a dead slow pitch.
31:20Watch the shot.
31:22Great stroke once again.
31:23This time Wenger did fish it up.
31:26And he slashed it all covers.
31:27Just missed the six over here again.
31:29What will we do next now?
31:30Because you've only shot.
31:35Oh, he's hit that one straight down the ground.
31:36That was over pitch.
31:37That's the first time he's got it up there.
31:39It's racing away down towards the deep mid-off boundary.
31:41Will it get there?
31:42I think it'll probably just make it.
31:45Not quite.
31:48That's well fielded.
31:49Have another look at that lovely straight drive from Jai Surya.
31:53Down the ground, into the gap at mid-off.
31:55And it kept rolling away.
31:56Kept the fieldsman interested right to the line.
32:19He's getting a little frustrated, Kalou, with R&A.
32:24He wants to get that pull shot if he's going.
32:27There's a little Kalou with R&A.
32:29Desperately keen to get that pull shot going.
32:31He didn't quite get onto that one.
32:32It went almost straight to mid-on.
32:35That's one with outside that off stump.
32:42Swung away on the onside.
32:44Over the man at mid-on.
32:45Kumle giving chase.
32:47I just beat him to the fence.
32:49He just pulls it back.
32:50And the Sri Lankans will have enough time to come back for three.
32:55There you are.
32:56That's Passat.
32:56Kalou with Anna.
32:58Heuking him over mid-on.
33:00The ball bouncing just a few yards inside the boundary for Kumle to pick it.
33:07Just inches inside.
33:16Swung away by Jayasurya.
33:17This is a big hit.
33:18Will go all the way over Square Lake for a second six.
33:22Really got stuck into that one.
33:24Got underneath it and smashed it over Square Lake.
33:27Magnificent shot by Jayasurya there.
33:29What could Young Passat do?
33:30This ball did a decent delivery on middle stump.
33:34But Jayasurya quickly bouncing onto it.
33:37Over Square Lake for six.
33:38A superb shot.
33:40A shot only Jayasurya could play.
33:42That's the type of cricket these Sri Lankans have been playing over the last few months.
34:01Oh, smashed away by Jayasurya again.
34:03Over mid-wicket.
34:05One bounce, two and will go over the fence.
34:08He really plays that shot well on the onside.
34:10Picks it up so early.
34:13Once again, Sri Lankans feeding on to Jayasurya's strengths.
34:16Pitching it up to him.
34:17And Jayasurya just pointing it over.
34:20Taking the aerial route.
34:21Going over mid-wicket.
34:22One bounce into the boundary.
34:25That's an area where he's very strong.
34:27It's pretty clear that he's decided if the ball is bowled in that area,
34:31he's going to have a go and go over the top.
34:37That's the area on the onside.
34:39But he also has another spot.
34:44Down the track comes Kaluwitana and finds the gap on the offside.
34:48This should go all the way to the fence.
34:52Good use of the feet.
34:54And getting the timing right.
34:57Glorious shot there by Kaluwitana.
34:58Dancing down to the pitch of the ball.
35:00Ashes giving a little bit of air.
35:02But Kaluwitana quickly onto it.
35:05Taking it on the half-colly.
35:07Crashing it away on the offside to the boundary.
35:09No stopping it whatsoever.
35:14Just two men in the deep.
35:16Viterana is going to have a go.
35:23Down the track.
35:24And again, to the offside.
35:26Finds the gap.
35:27Might just not go all the way to the fence.
35:30Good chase there, Bajeja Deja.
35:33Batsman should comfortably get three.
35:37There's the third umpire.
35:41Making inquiries as to whether the fielder did cross the line.
35:46Or the ball was in contact with the fielder when he touched the line.
35:52I think it did touch the line.
35:55And so the batsman should get four rounds for eight.
36:08Got the way on the offside beautifully by Jaisouria.
36:11This should go all the way to the fence.
36:15Waited on it nicely.
36:17Played it late.
36:17And found the gap.
36:19Right back on that back foot when he crushed that one-two point.
36:23No problems with that one for Jaisouria.
36:27Just a cycle slightly short by Kapoor.
36:31And Kalawitana quickly bouncing onto it.
36:34Metered the bat.
36:35Ball racing to the boundary.
36:43Again hit over the onside.
36:44There is a man there in the deep.
36:46But it might just go over him.
36:47It does.
36:48He didn't hit it all that well.
36:50But still had enough in it to clear the fence.
36:52So very, very good over for Sri Lanka.
36:55This is the sixth of the last ball.
36:57He didn't quite seem to time it well.
36:58But it still had enough on it.
37:00To clear the man at deep mid-wicket.
37:02Jaisouria's third six.
37:07Oh, that's a lovely shot.
37:10He's a very good player of spin bowling there.
37:13Kalawitana.
37:14And he's showing it here.
37:17A lot of problems for Indian captain here.
37:19And Kalawitana pulled that one beautifully.
37:21He's a tremendous player.
37:22Not only against spin, I think he's based also.
37:25He plays it really well.
37:27And here he pulled it.
37:28A quicker delivery from Kumbhle.
37:29In well, you know, like directed stroke.
37:31There was a big gap.
37:32There was no fielder on mid-wicket boundary.
37:34And he got competition very quickly.
37:36And he's plenty of time to hold that one over the rope.
37:40Quiet run rate down below four.
37:47Very good throw there from...
37:49Actually, he played like...
37:50And it's a quick field from Kumbhle.
37:53He moves in very quickly.
37:57And there's a huge roar from the crowd.
38:02And that brings up to Asuriyah's 50.
38:05And the similar thing is happening to Jair Surya.
38:09That's nicely struck.
38:11Just inside the rope.
38:14Donald Blackman was the best in the world.
38:17And I think he will remain the best.
38:18And it's a well-timed stuck boundary from Jair Surya because it came down and locked it over the bowlers.
38:25It's a beautiful stroke.
38:26And Ashish Kapoor can't do anything over here.
38:33And this one's hit pretty well again.
38:36Once more, just falling short of the rope and almost pitching and spinning back.
38:42He'd be pleased with that one on the golf course.
38:45It's 91 for Nort.
38:51Tendorka trying a few things with Fieldsman in close.
38:54But his footwork is so good, Karlou.
38:58He's a very, very hard man to tie down.
39:05This earlier setback from the Sri Lankan player,
39:09which he suffered in Delhi game and in other game also.
39:13Oh, that's a lovely strike.
39:17One bounce and over the rope.
39:22He can't do anything here because Jair Surya is looking for his strokes, looking for runs.
39:27And he came down the rig at this time and the crowd is really loving it.
39:31It's 100 for Shilank, 101 in 15.4 hours.
39:34It's a very good start.
39:36And only 97 balls in 83 minutes.
39:40This is not a bad delivery, but he was down the wicket, Jair Surya.
39:44There was nobody behind Mid-On.
39:46So he had a big gap over there and he picked up very nicely.
39:51Well, there's Jair Surya's hit list.
39:56He's certainly got a few of them.
40:06And it's terrific for the crowd at the ground and I guess for the people, the Sri Lankan people watching
40:11on TNL to see their World Cup champions for the first time in action back in this country as champions.
40:19And to see them doing so well and confirming that form of the World Cup, we also hope that the
40:28people on Star TV across Asia are enjoying this.
40:33They're probably not quite enjoying it as much as the people watching on TNL.
40:44Well, it's not unusual to have an appeal from Nay and Mongia.
40:48In fact, it would have been unusual if he hadn't appealed.
40:54Yeah, looking for a quick run here, but he realized the ball was there.
40:58So he was well inside the crease.
41:04He's had a go at that one and it's going down into the gap.
41:07I don't think it'll quite get to the fence.
41:08It's been cut off down there, but it was short delivery.
41:10Yes, you can't afford to do that.
41:13Getting back quickly and pulling it on the back foot.
41:16Very powerful player.
41:19Jair Surya on strike again, 66 or 56.
41:30Well, just a little flutter there as once again, Kaluwikandar apologizing because he ended up charging down the wicket again.
41:40Sent back by Jair Surya.
41:43And he was scampering away.
41:44That was going to be close.
41:45In fact, had it hit, it would have been very close.
41:48It's possible.
41:49And take on much of the overs.
41:58Chipped it over the offside again.
42:00That one also running down towards the fence.
42:02It's a little quicker, that outfield.
42:03It's gone all the way.
42:05A lovely little chip shot.
42:07Beautifully played by Sanat Jair Surya.
42:12Played with a great deal of fairness.
42:14Players went absolutely marvelous.
42:16And the timing, just wonderful.
42:20Just see that ball racing to the boundary.
42:22Despite the fact that it was just chipped over.
42:25But on this rather heavy outfield, still having enough momentum to get to the ropes.
42:34Well, that's nicely played.
42:36That's beautifully it down the fence.
42:38Here, we'll have a little chat with him and ask him about these two batsmen as well as the batting
42:42depth on his side.
42:47He's got it away, and that's it.
42:50Kalu with Arana's half century.
42:55Much appreciated by this huge crowd.
43:01Hold in.
43:02Right up in the block hole.
43:04Kalu with Arana just trying to ease that one away on the offside.
43:07And Sashin Tendulkar has made the breakthrough.
43:10Got it right up there.
43:12And that's the way to bowl.
43:15However, what a magnificent opening partnership this has been.
43:21That's it.
43:22Out bowled and a very relieved Indian captain.
43:28This young man deserves a real pat on the back for his performance in the World Cup.
43:33That's really the dismissal of Kalu with Arana.
43:36Comprehensive, bold by Tendulkar.
43:38No longer the responsibility of the rest of it.
43:40The Silva and the Granitava alone.
43:44That went away, spear for four.
43:45Right up the middle of the back.
43:47Short ball.
43:48Aravinda onto the back foot.
43:49Whack, four.
43:52There it is, the full moon.
43:55And that's part of the reason for the holiday, the religious holiday today here in Colombo.
44:02The thrill of a boundary.
44:09Not sure whether he got a tickle on that one or not.
44:11Probably did.
44:19And backed off the pads.
44:31That's a lovely shot.
44:33That boundary takes Jair Suria into the 90s.
44:37Well, there hasn't been too many better shots played today.
44:40This is beautifully played by Jair Suria.
44:43It was up there in the slot.
44:44And he smashed it back past the bowler.
44:51Got it straight enough to beat the man at long off.
44:57Just very humid out there, especially when the lights come on.
45:00And as a result of it, has been able to be a thorn in most times.
45:07All right.
45:08They'll take him to within one run of the 100.
45:13This is the shot that took Jair Suria to 99.
45:18Nothing stops Jair Suria from playing that.
45:22That seems to be one way they could keep him quiet.
45:34There it is.
45:35100 for Jair Suria.
45:37His third in Wanda Internationals.
45:50That's a great innings by Jair Suria.
45:53The Silva.
45:54A warm embrace congratulating his teammates.
46:07Emptire Buckner calls wide.
46:09That won't please Kumbly too much.
46:15Kumbly has been having a rather rough time recently.
46:19His performances in England certainly not up to his usual high standards.
46:26Lovely timing there from Aravinda.
46:29Played a few of those shots in the World Cup final on his way to a century.
46:33Aravinda de Silva shot.
46:35Just playing through the line.
46:37Punching it away.
46:39It's no stopping when de Silva gets the middle.
46:49He's got that one away fine.
46:51I'll get two here.
46:53He might even come back to the third.
46:55Jair Suria certainly will.
46:57Aravinda's on his way.
47:00Three more to the total.
47:03Third performance.
47:04De Silva going pretty well too on 32.
47:07He's just knocking it around into the gaps at the moment like that.
47:12And they're slowly and surely they're getting close up to the Indian Cup.
47:15That single brings up the 200.
47:18I wonder what that has written on it.
47:21That's a good shot straight down the ground.
47:24I don't know if it will go all the way.
47:26It's a little harder down that part of the ground.
47:27Will it get there?
47:28Yes, it has.
47:29Just made it.
47:31So Aravinda, is that enough?
47:32He wants to get the saver with now.
47:36Didn't really time this one too well, but still had the legs in it to reach the fence.
47:45Coming down the track to Ganguly.
47:46The field was up.
47:48Deciding to go over mid-off.
47:52I guess I think that an old Percy may have been telling Ian Chappell who he thought the man of
47:56the match was.
48:01Just made it to extra cover.
48:04And that's untidy.
48:07And the throw coming in over the top of the keeper's head.
48:16Topped away on the offside again for another single.
48:24It's nice to see Aravinda rock solid as ever.
48:30Seems to have matured over the last couple of years into a run-hungry player.
48:34There's never a question about his talent.
48:38Just one ball to go in the saver.
48:44He's pulled that one away and it's going straight down to the square-legged fieldsman.
48:48One run needed.
48:49Plenty of time to get it.
48:51And I suspect that everyone will be very happy with the way this tournament started.
48:56The Single World Series from Sri Lanka's point of view has got off to a fly-up.
49:01One won't be surprised if Aravinda De Silva decides to take the aerial route of the field up in the
49:07circle.
49:11Well, he smashed that one through the offside field.
49:14It's gone to the fence for four.
49:16This has been a tremendous performance by the Sri Lankans.
49:19And once again, Jaya Saria, who seems to me to have a little bit of cramp,
49:25either that or a bit of a pulled muscle,
49:27has played a gem of an innings.
49:31Congratulated there by Sashin Tendulkar.
49:36What a knock it's been.
49:38So he's going to take his time off the ground.
49:41It looks as if he's absolutely exhausted.
49:46He doesn't look too well.
49:48He should be limping off the field.
49:52It's been a comprehensive victory for the Sri Lankans.
49:55They have outplayed the Indians in literally every department of the game.
50:00For Sri Lanka's sake.
50:02Must be hoping that it's not a serious injury.
50:05It's only a cramp.
50:07Well, there's the Sri Lankans scorecard.
50:09Jaya Saria not out 120.
50:11Tremendous innings.
50:12128 balls.
50:14Once again, dominating the scene here.
50:16Palu with Arana.
50:17Played pretty well.
50:18He ended up with 53 of 66.
50:20It was a tremendous opening partnership.
50:22And Aravinda de Silva went out there
50:24and he looked rock solid from the first ball he faced.
50:2776 balls.
50:28He made 49.
50:29And from India's point of view,
50:31well, as far as their bowling was concerned,
50:33they lacked penetration more than anything else.
50:35I thought Sharnat bowled a pretty good over initially.
50:39In the background there,
50:40you can see Jaya Saria being carried off.
50:43It's pretty warm in Colombo.
50:45Well, a comprehensive victory to Sri Lanka
50:47in this second match of the 1996 World Series for Singer.
50:53And for our presentation ceremony,
50:56we have as our chief guest
50:58the Honourable Minister for Youth Sports and Rural Development,
51:02Mr. S.B. Dissanayka.

51:20Thanks, Sachin.
51:32Sachin, it looked like batting was a bit difficult out there.
51:36Initially, yeah, they bowled a good line
51:37and, you know, our job was much harder
51:40than what, you know, the way they batted,
51:43I thought it was excellent.
51:45Jaya Surya and Kaluvithana batted very well.
51:49And for the winning captain,
51:50we have a prize of U.S. $2,000
51:52to be presented to Arjuna Ranatunga.
52:04Arjuna, the crowd came along to congratulate you guys
52:07on winning the World Cup
52:08and you did them proud.
52:10Yeah, I think we were under little pressure
52:11but I think boys played very well right throughout.
52:14Yeah, you must have been delighted with that performance.
52:17Bowling was pretty good.
52:19Yeah, I thought we bowled well, fielded very well
52:21and to keep the strong Indian batting for 2-20,
52:25it was a very good effort by the whole team.
52:28And I guess the crowd, the home crowd,
52:31haven't actually seen Joe Surya and Kaluvithana
52:34actually do it on home turf
52:36but now they're going to want more of that, I guess.
52:39Yeah, I thought both batted really well
52:41and I hope that they will continue the good work
52:42in the next couple of games.
52:45And the man of the match is Sinat Jaya Surya,
52:49I can announce.
52:53I thought that might be a reasonably popular win.
52:57Unfortunately, what has he got?
52:58Cramp, is it?
52:59Yeah, he has got slight cramps.
53:01He will be OK by tomorrow.
53:02You'll make sure he's OK, will you?
53:04I'll make sure that he will be OK by tomorrow.
53:05OK, well, if you'd like to accept the cheque for him, $500 US,
53:10and to present it to you, Arjuna,
53:12the chairman of the Australian Cricket Board,
53:14Mr Dennis Rogers.
53:22Congratulations, Arjuna, well done.
