00:00Welcome to the highlights of the Benson Hedges World Series Cup game at the Adelaide Oval today.
00:14The second match in a triple header here over Australia Day weekend.
00:18And this is the sixth game in the preliminary matches in this competition.
00:22Australia, they have brought in Simon Davis for Ken McClay.
00:25That'll be a change in technique because Davis is an in-swinger compared with McClay who mostly moves away from the right-hander in the air.
00:32And then the West Indies have brought in Larry Gomes for Gordon Greenwich.
00:35That is occasioned by a slight injury to Greenwich and he's not able to take his place.
00:40Gomes has come in. And Tony Gregg told us that the pitch was absolutely perfect.
00:45The toss was won by Alan Border and he put the West Indies into bat.
00:49We pick it up now on the fifth over. 18 runs are on the board.
00:52It's Simon Davis coming into bowl. Desmond Haynes is taking strike.
00:55Your commentators, Mrs. Chappell and Laurie.
01:01Edge and taken by Tim Zura.
01:04Simon O'Donnell has bowled mostly the in-swinger.
01:07That one just went away off the seam. And a good start for Australia.
01:11Excellent catch. Good delivery. Haynes driving on the up.
01:15Wide at the crease but holds its line. This one, the leg cutter. Thick edge.
01:19And Zura quickly across. It went quickly. Good catch.
01:23Available wicket for Simon Davis. And it's one for 18.
01:31Oh, and that must be out.
01:33Well, it didn't pitch outside, I shouldn't think.
01:37The question is, where did it hit him? He didn't pick it at all.
01:43He looked to completely lose it.
01:49Well, that looks to have hit him on the knee roll.
01:54And there we see the knee roll in line with the stump.
01:58Certainly like to have a look at that one again, Tony.
02:04Always smash that one.
02:06That was a lovely delivery for the batsman.
02:08It was a half volley just outside off stump.
02:10And he blazed that one through extra cover.
02:12That was the first boundary of the day.
02:14Which gives you some idea of how difficult these West Indians are finding batting at the moment.
02:21A lot of West Indian flavour about that shot.
02:24Stephen Waugh.
02:28He's going to be the bowler now from the river end.
02:32Again, we see the closed face of the bat.
02:42Slow outfield.
02:44Rain overnight.
02:45Dirk Willem, the fieldsman.
02:47And right back to Zora over the stumps.
02:52It's in the air, but just wide of the fieldsman at mid-on.
02:56Matthews is chasing down towards that long boundary.
03:00And so yet another three to the West Indies.
03:07It's just beginning to get away a little bit now.
03:11They are starting to get their eye in.
03:13And Stephen Waugh will have to make sure he keeps that ball pitched up.
03:16Tries to keep it tight.
03:21In the air.
03:22And sure, he's dropped him.
03:24Well, I think it carried.
03:25It was a little bit difficult to see exactly whether he got a hand there.
03:29I think he might have come too far at the end.
03:31It's quite damp down there.
03:32And he may have slipped.
03:33Let's have another look.
03:35O'Donnell a big man, but a very good mover.
03:38Well, look at that.
03:39A little bit much bottom hand.
03:40He got right through.
03:42Well, they have just got the fingertips to it.
03:49Just couldn't get down fast enough.
03:51Well, that's the second time Gomes has teased O'Donnell.
03:56Once of Simon Davis.
03:57He was at mid-off and the ball didn't quite carry to him.
04:00That was a very low chance.
04:01Very low chance.
04:09And there he goes for one now.
04:12And that's gone for four.
04:13That's the first sign of aggression we've seen from either of the two players for some time now.
04:18Matthews continues.
04:19Got him.
04:20Clean bowled him.
04:21Tiny hit across.
04:22Greg Matthews having a very good season with the ball in the Benson Hedges World Series Cup.
04:37Keens bowls Larry Gomes for 43.
04:39And a traditional shot from Larry Gomes.
04:42The ball pitched on the stumps trying to work it or whip it off the stumps towards the leg side.
04:47And that's gone through the gap.
04:49And that's pushed those stumps back.
04:51And Greg Matthews very happy and continuing his good form in this one-day cricket competition.
04:56So the 30th over.
04:58The West Indies have lost their second wicket.
05:00They're two for 110.
05:01Bruce Reid can't cut that one off.
05:14Success at the second attempt.
05:17The most elegant of sweep shots.
05:20A little frustration here.
05:23He tried to hit that much squarer than that.
05:25Somewhere through the mid wicket area.
05:26That's right over.
05:31Well into the member stand.
05:32In fact, onto the roof.
05:34That's only the second time I've seen one go up there.
05:37They won't get the ball back unless Brian Hearn is at the ground.
05:42Former South Australian player.
05:44He had to climb up the back of the building and onto the roof.
05:48To get the other six that I've seen land on the roof.
05:51That was hit by Ted Dexter, the former England captain.
05:55And it's not an easy job climbing up on that roof, I can tell you.
05:59It's a short boundary square, but to get one on the roof, as Ian said, is a huge hit.
06:05Onto the George Giffen stand.
06:07Up there onto the corrugated iron.
06:09Camera's a bit low there.
06:10It's gone way above them.
06:12And that one's gone too, I would say.
06:16No, just hits the fence on the full.
06:20Didn't quite time it.
06:2216 runs off that over, plus a lost ball.
06:29Great shot.
06:30And that finds the boundary.
06:32So the run's starting to come thick and fast for the West Indies.
06:37You have to be a cricket enthusiast to enjoy that.
06:39That was poetry in motion.
06:42Richie Richardson off the back foot.
06:44O'Donnell just a fraction short.
06:47And such a bad ball.
06:50A beautifully executed shot.
06:55And Richardson wants the single.
06:57Viv Richards isn't taking it.
06:59And there should be a run out.
07:01No, umpire Bailash is unmoved.
07:08It wouldn't be an easy decision.
07:10Robin Bailash, a very experienced man,
07:13who's back in the international arena now,
07:15after making himself available again after retirement.
07:18But well down.
07:19Better than halfway.
07:20A slip too.
07:22And the problem could be
07:24that Tim Zura broke the stumps before actually taking the ball.
07:28The West Indies move to two for 158.
07:31Peter Taylor continues.
07:32In the commentary position,
07:33it'll be David Hooks and Tony Gregg.
07:39It's a six.
07:40It's bound to be a six.
07:42Over the top.
07:43Ten rows back.
07:45There's no way in the world you can afford to evolve.
07:47Viv Richards a full toss with that short boundary.
07:49No, and it's the short boundary that comes into play once again at Adelaide Oval.
07:53It does get you into trouble at times,
07:56forcing you to play across the line,
07:58but advancing down the track and
08:00that's a stand-up home run.
08:03I would think in baseball terms,
08:05and that's gone well into the garden seats.
08:12Always hit that down the ground.
08:13That's a long boundary.
08:14It probably won't carry to the fence, or has it?
08:17Yes, it's gone over the top,
08:18and I tell you what,
08:19that is a long, long boundary down there.
08:21Viv Richards really beginning to cut loose.
08:2416 from the over.
08:27There's some dispute out there at the moment.
08:30I think he's cancelling it.
08:31Perhaps it hit the fence, Hooksy.
08:33Yes, that's a very, very long boundary.
08:35In fact, I would say probably one of the longest boundaries in the world.
08:39And Viv trying to hit that for six,
08:43and it goes just for four.
08:45So at the end of that over, two for 168.
08:51He's bowled in.
08:53Neck and the crop.
08:56So that was the end of a good contribution by Richardson.
08:59Out for 72.
09:03And Stephen Walsh showing the value of keeping the ball up.
09:06He bowled the wide the ball before,
09:08and then Richardson trying to whip that away on the leg side.
09:11Very similar dismissal to Larry Gomes,
09:12who did a similar sort of thing.
09:14And that's Richie Richardson out.
09:16And in the 41st over,
09:18the West Indies are three for 184.
09:26Well feel it by Borda.
09:27This could be Art.
09:28He's got him.
09:29Yes, he's got him.
09:30He's out right now without facing.
09:31Well, what a mix-up that was.
09:33I think the captain there, Viv Richards, may have said yes.
09:37He changed his mind.
09:38Gus Lagie was too committed.
09:39What a good throw from Borda.
09:41Well taken by Bruce Reid.
09:43And they got him out without facing a ball.
09:46And that's the way to get rid of the informed batsman.
09:48And certainly a mix-up.
09:49But a very good bit of fielding by Alan Borda.
09:51And throwing on his knees.
09:53And Bruce Reid, not quite behind the stumps,
09:55but able to take it cleanly.
09:57That's his thing from the other night.
09:59And just took the bowels off.
10:00And that's Gus Logie out without facing.
10:03So the West Indies lose their fourth wicket.
10:06The total's still on 184.
10:10Now he's got Stephen Waugh now.
10:12And Reid that time misses it.
10:17He's fielded well once in that position.
10:20He's still on his knees and someone better chase it.
10:22This could be a five.
10:23It's rolling down towards the boundary.
10:24Simon O'Donnell getting there just in time.
10:26Richards comes back for the fourth.
10:29I think he's probably quite weary.
10:30So he's going to settle for four.
10:39And just meets the fielder.
10:40Matthew's not quite being able to get around.
10:43Richard's giving himself room and finding the gap
10:46between the third man and the deep cover.
10:49This ball wasn't that far off target.
10:51Richard's pulling away to the leg side.
10:54Getting himself enough room to scoop it square.
10:57Split the gap beautifully.
11:01And he's cracked that in the same place.
11:03And that's four more.
11:05Well, that's a replay of the shot
11:08which he made for four early in the over.
11:14I saw John Embry take to Stephen Waugh
11:17around about off stump giving himself some room.
11:19He hit more towards cover where Richard's
11:21hitting square because cover is fairly straight.
11:24Now he's been moved to a square position.
11:26So there's a point and a third man on the fence.
11:29Bruce Reid.
11:30He's hit that really well.
11:43Four runs beautifully struck by Richard's.
11:45Did it so easily.
11:47Finishes the over with a boundary.
11:51Four for 218.
11:52That's down the ground.
11:56In the air.
11:57And a catch taken.
11:58Richard's is gone.
11:59Simon Davis grabs it.
12:00An important wicket for Australia.
12:02Significant loss for the West Indies.
12:04Yes.
12:05And Steve Waugh keeping his cool.
12:06He was under threat from great Vivian Richards.
12:07He went for the long boundary which is a bit of a surprise.
12:08And covering at mid-off was Simon Davis.
12:09The ball went very high.
12:10Took his time.
12:11Caught it well.
12:12A vital wicket just at the right time.
12:13Four for 221.
12:14In the 49th over.
12:15Bruce Reed with the final over.
12:38And that's a big hit by Harper.
12:39And the same general vicinity that we saw from Alan Lamb.
12:44and that's gone for six almost a replay of the six we saw from aaron lamb of bruce reed
12:50the other night i think it was in fact longer tony that was a massive hit from roger harper
12:57just getting it short of a length and there it goes over the long boundary there just wide of
13:02mid wickets a big hit right into the crowd it's the run rate it's beautifully struck
13:10last ball of the innings
13:19and there's another one into the deep they'll run as many as they can get here if they have to but
13:23the ball will just trickle into the boundary for four so ten runs coming off the last two deliveries
13:30roger harper pushing the west indies up to five for 237. i still wish the australian bowlers would
13:38gear themselves to spear the ball in at the batsman's toes when they're in a situation like that
13:43it can be very costly as we saw with bruce reed and alan lamb the other evening and then roger harper
13:48got away from him here again today the correct theory behind that is that what the batsman really
13:53wants is the chance to loft the ball to hit it on the up and that's what's been provided now the card
14:00of the west indian innings five for 237 at the close of the 50 overs 72 to richardson and 69 to richards
14:07and for the australian bowlers two wickets to war and one each to davis and to greg matthews well this
14:14should be a pretty even contest 238 is a reasonable target the australians in fact did pretty well
14:19to keep the west indies down to that much depends now on how the australian openers can get away from
14:25the west indian bowlers and also from those athletic fielders in the inner circle
14:38he's gone this time outside edge found and australia have lost their first wicket as
14:44doujan takes a fundamental catch they're one for four
14:55yes
14:56well dirk well i'm getting an edge there
15:01big question mark at the end of the last over with marsh's partner but well i'm not looking comfortable
15:08in his day a brief stay the extra pace of marshall well i'm out for three australia one for four in the
15:15fifth over
15:21there's a good shot there from jeff marsh that's lowly chasing the design hands coming around but
15:26neither can get there
15:30the first boundary of the australian innings coming up in the 10th over
15:33and that'll do not only confidence for jeff marsh confidence for his batting partner dean jones and
15:41the rest of the blokes up in the change rooms
15:46he likes to drive jeff marsh he hasn't had many opportunities against this pace attack
15:52here's marshall now to dean jones
15:57that's a nice shot good timing and good placement
16:03and cardinals sitting in one day cricket the bowl too short and too wide i guess the cardinals
16:09thing in any level of sport but certainly in cricket but certainly in one day cricket and
16:15malcolm marshall just trying to bowl that off stump line of dean jones which is the fraction short
16:20dean jones played that pretty well but you can see the pace of malcolm marshall there the ball going
16:25behind square
16:26courtney walsh at fine leg that's well run dean jones back very quickly he's a good runner between wickets dean
16:39and there you see dean jones a very good turn really does run the minimum distance required
16:56from a bassman he just puts that bat over the line and turns very quickly and the running between the
17:01wickets has been a feature of the play all day today richie richardson is outstanding in that department
17:12if he played and beats harper gets a hand to it jones looking good square of the wicket
17:17two runs so jones showing
17:24great cutter of the ball it's a man of joel garner's pace
17:33there's a great piece of feeling actually an athletic touch there
17:37from roger harper to get across and save two runs
17:45well that's well played that's dean jones at his best
17:48getting joel gunner on the up strained down lakeside and this capacity crowd
17:53enjoying that shot and at the superbly time
17:56i think joel will be too pleased about that but um the richards will have to allow them just a fraction of leeway
18:13courtney walsh
18:15it after a square leg
18:19beautifully played it was short he's whipped it away one bounce into the fence
18:24well played dean jones it's just a fraction short he was under the back foot smashed it away
18:34that's the aim of the game to try and make the opposition think to make richards decide what
18:41he's going to do now and in fact it's worked here's roger harper
18:48looks pretty interesting he smashed that one square on the next side and one bounce that goes into the crowd
18:54do more like that from marsh there's a lovely sweep shot very positive
19:02all big appeal there for lbw he's got him he's out lbw
19:06well that one didn't bounce very much it was a quicker ball from joel gunner and what a breakthrough
19:11this is for the west indies just when australia didn't need a wicket to fall joel gunner has struck
19:16so dean jones who's played pretty well is out lbw to garner for 40. dean jones realizes the
19:24predicament that his country's in now there's no doubt about that absolutely would have missed off
19:29and leg taken middle right out of the ground halfway up and the big bird goes for the sky give us a slap
19:36of the hand dean jones a very fine 40 runs scored in 79 deliveries and australia now two it gets down
19:43for 85 in the 27th over half of the bowler
19:47bowled in that's a big wicket for roger harper alan border loosely trying to drive that ball away
19:59is clean bowled by a jubilant west indian side they have not won many matches just lately and they know
20:05that that was a big wicket was a big wicket australian's premier batsman the captain
20:12case of the scoreboard taking a wicket there alan border trying to bump up the scoring rate hitting
20:18across the line very early in his innings back border had only been there for six deliveries
20:24australian captain out one run six deliveries australia at three for 86 in the 28th over
20:32down the ground and on the boundary but not far enough there and that's six
20:39over the fence picked up well by jeff marsh and the fielder not taught enough
20:47this for a few other fielders that the west indies could have put there
20:50well garner anthony gray but all going down leg side and jeff marsh whipping that off his toes and
20:57richie richardson certainly in position there tony but just as you said not quite tall enough and
21:01that's yet another six
21:07and there's the comparison after 36. not that much in it fair bit mind you 18 runs in all
21:14and an extra wicket
21:21tony gray
21:26that's nicely placed that brings up the 50 stand and what a good way to do it
21:32that was a magnificent shot by war he set himself a bit by backing away and war was perfectly in the
21:38slot for the cut shot he played it and it went down to the boundary for four three four one 38
21:47so seven point seven nine now
21:49and he's picked the gap picked it beautifully there's two men out there not that far apart
22:04yes that's well played right off the meat of the bat right into the gap and that'll force
22:09slight adjustment to the field the man being brought just a bit squarer
22:13a little bit this right in the meat went down to the boundary just in front of square
22:28bev richards a simple catch and so stephen war goes batsman might have just crossed there marsh
22:36a bit of quick thinking kept charging through while stephen war didn't run
22:41so as marsh could get on strike
22:45yes stephen war not happy with this one it was a full pitch i should think and he went for the
22:49big one down the leg side it actually hit the front edge of the bat went straight up in the air so
22:53a straightforward catch he would be disappointed with that one going down the leg side and uh and
22:58he got some bad on it properly they will have gone for six so stephen war out for 24 or 37 balls
23:04and australia now four for 158. brilliant catch roger harper that was hit right off the middle by
23:14greg matthews and it was hit wide of roger harper but that doesn't mean much to him an excellent catch
23:20there for roger harper and his third wicket yes this could be a shell ultra classic catch he made some
23:27ground there i don't think matthews could believe it have a look at this he came down the wicket hit the
23:30ball have a look how far he went then he did go to his right a long way and in the end caught it easy
23:36he's a magnificent fielder and indeed mover so that's the end of greg matthews that went flying
23:42off the middle of his bat out for three in eight balls five for 171
23:48simon o'donnell probably australia's last chance jeff marsh is out there playing extremely well doing
23:54a good job as the sheet anchor he's really been the backbone of this innings o'donnell a good hitter
24:02and bregg matthews now back in the pavilion yes well from the time it left his bat till it
24:08went thud into those hands couldn't have been much more than a split second
24:15smashed that ball back at him and he caught it easy
24:24malcolm marshall now comes back to well his last four overs he will finish out with courtney walsh
24:33a shout from malcolm marshall and he won't do much damage today
24:37he hit malcolm marshall for six in melbourne the other night
24:41but malcolm marshall gets his revenge here at the adelaide oval
24:45yes this is a quick ball a good one first up it pitches just outside off stump and a big nick
24:52there through to the keeper and have a look how it thudded into those gloves
24:56Malcolm marshall quite enjoyed that one having been hit for six in the previous encounter
25:02and so simon o'donnell out first ball for a duck
25:07that's a big blow to australia because if he gets going he can be quite dangerous with the bat
25:13donald out australia now six down for 172
25:19hit a taylor with a promotion in the order he comes in ahead of tim zura
25:24in the commentary position maxi walker and bill lorry courtney walsh continues
25:32taylor is gone trying to hit over mid-wicket as clean bowled by courtney walsh
25:36seven for 183. yes well line and length at that pace try to do the unorthodox try to hit across the line
25:51ahead a little in the air what can you do at this stage a huge ask 11 runs and over required taylor out
25:57for four australia seven for 183 in the 46th
26:04tim zura joins his western australian teammate jeff marsh because
26:09taylor's been clean bowled by courtney walsh
26:13trying to hit through mid-wicket took the middle and off stump
26:16the crowd just starting to move around a bit and that required 13
26:31three wickets in hand tim zura
26:38it's well struck that's one of the shots of the afternoon by
26:41tim zura malcolm marshall scratched through cover beautifully played
26:46one must ask the question how does peter taylor bat ahead of tim zura
26:51it's amazing i suppose must the same about simon o'donnell the other night he was
26:56a perfect match for malcolm marshall hitting him flat down the ground for six today a duck first ball
27:02three overs to be bold all of a sudden a hush around the adelaide oval ten runs off that previous over
27:14courtney walsh it's a big hit there's a man down there it's a great catcher it's harper
27:19he does it hard but he does it well beautifully caught misjudged that slightly but at the last moment
27:25runs forward the end of a great innings marsh out caught by harper of courtney walsh for 94
27:33a great catch and disappointment for marsh he did the hard work he saw the australians through against
27:40some pretty hot bowling good 94 runs three fours one six and now for the second time in the benson hedges
27:47world series cup competition this summer jeffrey marsh is out just a few runs short of the magic
27:54three figures this is how it happened that one was short enough he got the elevation the idea was
28:00right he hit it two straight roger harper a great athlete dives forward picked up the ball show of
28:06success so so that's it eight down now for 199 in the 48th over
28:13bruce reed joins tim zura after the end of the very fine innings jeff marsh caught in the deep for 94
28:29zura's got hold of that and there she goes crash into the fence for four
28:35tim zura hitting away with the angle right-handed courtney walsh getting out wide on the return
28:41crease just a little short top stuff it certainly was a lot of bottom hand
28:48shot we see a lot of towards the last 10 overs of the one day internationals
28:54he's having another look around there maybe he can do it again let's see
29:01full pitch and that's could be four more so all of a sudden tim zura raises the hopes of the australian
29:06fans crashes into the cover fence the 48th over zero fighting right down to the wire
29:14and even a union jack hip a titanic hit well that wasn't a bad hit either i think it was a song bill
29:22but that was a good shot through the covers look at this it's away you're right the crowd have come
29:27alive again they've decided not to go there is a chance a slim one albeit the west indies moved their
29:34game up just a notch or two to david richards himself in fine form scored 69 runs in 64 balls to
29:41do a lot of the damage who's read bald some width so courtney walsh finds the timber once again
29:53exactly a straight bat shot trying to play an innovative shot he backs away shows the three
29:59stumps over they go bowels in the air comprehensively bold there it is bruce reed out for one australia nine
30:06for two one seven simon davis the striker what you are chipping in for his third wicket
30:21down to mid off they take one
30:25kim zura coming back to the second the throws to the keepers end
30:27that's it so victory to the west indians by 16 runs a good all-round buying performance
30:37only 16 runs but it must have seemed like a marathon run for the australians out there
30:41towards the end when they were trying to pick up runs against that excellent west indian attack
30:46the card of the australian innings in reply to the west indies 237 straighter needed 238 to win showed
30:52that they finished up with nine for 221 94 to jeff marsh 40 to dean jones and 24 to steve war with
31:00tim zura 22 not out the death from 20 balls were the only double figures apart from extras that is
31:06which added 26 to the scoreline bowling figures for the west indies they were their usual efficient
31:12selves there marshall i thought bowled fast today and very well 10 overs two maidens two for 34
31:17gray none for 44 and garner one for 36 three wickets each to walsh and harper for the moment it's good
31:25night this has been a fox sports presentation
