00:00Frank Worrell and Richie Benno toss in near-century Melbourne heat prior to
00:29the start of the second test match. A good first day crowd of 32,000 waits for play to start,
00:35no doubt hoping for a repetition of the sensational first test in Brisbane.
00:39Benno calls correctly and has no hesitation in batting on a pitch which, although a little
00:43green on top, looks perfect for batting.
00:51West Indies express merchant Wesley Hall bowls the first ball of the innings to Colin MacDonald
00:56and the Australian scoring is underway.
00:58Lindsay Klein has been named as 12th man for Australia, while Cammie Smith fills the
01:03same position for the West Indies.
01:05Hall, as usual, bowls with a good deal of life and pace early in the innings, but MacDonald
01:10is batting confidently and scores freely.
01:12Seven runs are taken from Hall's opening over, five to MacDonald and two to Simpson. Chester
01:31Watson takes the ball at the Northernal members' end and MacDonald's shot into the covers is worth
01:35a single as Valentine Fields. Bob Simpson faces Watson and a confident appeal for LBW is disallowed
01:43by umpire Hoy. When Watson bowls again, Simpson plays the finest shot of the innings so far,
01:49a sweet cover drive that was four from the time it left the bat. A good beginning with Australia
01:55none for fifteen after two overs. Hall, as usual, commands great respect, but he has his lapses,
02:04like this ball which umpire Eager has no hesitation in calling a wide. Watson's next over to MacDonald
02:11is a good one and the bowler is able to make several balls rise sharply, although the West Indies
02:16bowlers still can't get the early breakthrough.
02:25In Hall's next over, MacDonald gives evidence that he's not entirely happy as he edges one to sobers,
02:30and it's Big Wesley Hall who provides the first sensation of the innings when he has MacDonald
02:35caught off his hand at slip by Watson. It's a great break for the West Indians to get rid of
02:40the solid MacDonald for fifteen and the drinks are just as welcome to the parched fieldsman as
02:45MacDonald's wicket. Australia one for thirty-five and Harvey the new batsman facing Hall.
03:01Harvey's off the mark with a single pass point with the sun-hatted West Indies skipper Frank Worrell
03:06doing the chasing. Australia forty-six runs in the first hour and the fifty comes up when Harvey
03:14crashes Watson straight back for four. Harvey is on the lookout for runs and at this stage looks to be
03:28in no trouble against the opening attack. At the other end Simpson is treating every ball on its merits,
03:37a good plan for an opening batsman. The first bowling change with Garfield Sobers in his role of medium
03:46pacer. Harvey appreciates the change as he swings Sobers to fine leg for four.
03:51another artistic Harvey stroke but this time it brings him only a single.
04:08The end of Sobers first over brings another bowling change with skipper Frank Worrell coming on to
04:12accompany Sobers with similar left arm medium paces.
04:24Harvey watches Worrell carefully but he's not to last much longer as he mistimes a drive and is
04:30neatly caught by Wesley Hall at first slip. It's a blow to Australia's hopes but a great boost for the
04:35West Indies to get rid of both MacDonald and Harvey with the score standing at only 60.
04:39Harvey out for 12 and Norman O'Neill the next batsman. After a poor start to the season O'Neill has
04:46now scored three centuries against the tourists and the Victorian crowd is hoping for a big score
04:51from the right-hander. O'Neill soon opens his account with a single pass point. After the early
04:57setbacks in the Australian inning Simpson and O'Neill begin to consolidate and when Sobers bowls to O'Neill
05:03this shot brings up the Australian hundred compiled in the excellent time of 99 minutes.
05:26Simpson has played an extremely useful innings for his side treating every ball on its merits but he's
05:30destined not to reach his half century as he's out in halls next over when attempting to glance
05:36and Alexander accepts the chance.
05:41Simpson is out for a valuable 49 runs but with the Australian total of three for 105 the West Indies
05:46are right on top with skipper Frank Worrell having the bowling honours at this stage.
05:53Les Fable is the new batsman and he's quickly among the runs when he gets a loud no-ball call from umpire
05:58Hoy and hooks Watson to within two yards of the fine leg fence.
06:09It's hot work for Wesley Hall in his second spell with the thermometer showing over 100
06:13and Norman O'Neill at the bat increase. One o'clock must be welcome relief for the players as they leave
06:19the field for lunch with Australia three for 114 O'Neill 28 and Fable 4 with Mcdonald Harvey and Simpson
06:27all back in the pavilion it's a good morning's cricket for the West Indies.
06:34The crowds loved every minute of the morning session and braved the scorching heat as the battle continues.
06:39Watson continues the attack to O'Neill and a cut to third man sets the Australian total moving again.
06:53Fable too is on the lookout for runs and gives us the chance to study the form of star batsman
06:58Rowan Kanhai who was a doubtful starter in this match with a leg injury.
07:02The Australian 150 has passed 40 minutes after lunch but in Worrell's next over there's further
07:11trouble for Australia when O'Neill glances and Sobers takes a magnificent catch at leg slip.
07:17A great effort by this versatile cricketer and Australia now in trouble with four down for 155
07:23with Ken Mackay the new batsman to face Worrell.
07:31Mackay plays defensively and it's the end of a great over by Worrell with his figures two for 23.
07:38Sobers again this time to Fable and the South Australian slams him wide of mid on for four
07:43giving Chester Watson a hopeless chase.
07:45It's absorbing cricket and with the visitors on top Worrell brings on bespectacled left arm spinner Alph
07:58Valentine. Fable is anxious to build up the Australian total but he can't always beat the well-set field.
08:04Fable completes the first 50 of the Australian innings when he turns Valentine to square leg
08:16but he scores only one more run before he's dismissed Court Nurse off Sobers at backward square leg
08:21and the Australian total slumps to five for 189. A good knock by Les Fable top score to this stage.
08:28Alan Davidson is the new batsman and it's no surprise that Davidson is quickly off the
08:36mark with a single to third net. There's more drama in Valentine's next over when Davidson edges
08:48and the acrobatic Sobers just fails to hold what would have been a magnificent catch.
08:52Davidson celebrates the let off by forcing Valentine square on the offside while his Queensland partner
09:03Ken Mackay also takes to the spinner with an elegant cut for three which brings up the Australian 200.
09:18The two left-handers consolidate their partnership with some attractive batting against the West Indy spinner.
09:34There's a good deal of conjecture as to whether
09:48Worrell will take the new ball which is due but with Tee approaching he pins his faith in the spin
09:53of Valentine and now Ramadan. Mackay attempts no fireworks and at Tee the Australian innings
09:59has improved to five for 241, Mackay 31 and Davidson 35.
10:08Chester Watson takes the new ball immediately after Tee and takes good advantage of it to bowl a maiden over
10:13to Alan Davidson.
10:20But the crowds in store for sensations galore in Hall's first over with the new ball.
10:25First Mackay forces him away to backwards square leg for a single
10:31and now here's Wesley Hall in full cry with the new ball to Davidson.
10:35Davidson bowled Hall 35, Australia 6 for 242 and Hall's figures 3 for 40.
10:47Australian captain Richie Benno comes to the wicket and takes guard from umpire Hoyt.
10:51Now watch as Hall bowls three successive full tosses to Benno resulting in two runs,
10:56a thump on the thigh and finally the end of Benno's brief endings.
11:12Another wicket to Wesley Hall and with Australia 7 for 244, Hall's figures 4 for 42.
11:24Wicket keeper Wally Grout is the next batsman and he's determined not to give Hall a third wicket
11:28in a sensational over. It's crowd pleasing cricket with the West Indies thirsting for more blood,
11:34but it's not Ken Mackay's blood just yet. Although Chester Watson keeps the tension at breaking point,
11:40with this ball which clean bowls Wally Grout.
11:48Watson's first wicket and Australia 8 for 251.
11:55And now into the arena of the Melbourne Cricket Ground strides Johnny Martin
11:59playing in his first test match. Martin quickly provides his answer to the successes of the West
12:04East Indies bowlers. It's a fighting rearguard action by the Australian left-handers and Ken Mackay
12:14bursts from defence to play his part in the Australian comeback.
12:18So the score mounts and when Worrell comes on again, Martin hits him for a towering six to bring up the Australian 300.
12:32So the score mounts and when Worrell comes on again Martin hits him for a towering six to bring up the Australian 300.
12:37The Melbourne crowd has taken Johnny Martin to its hut and loves his gay cavalier approach to batting.
12:47In this over for Mamadon, an attempted stumping and a confident appeal for LBW both disallowed.
12:53There's no doubting the entertainment value of Johnny Martin.
12:56The invaluable ninth wicket partnership continues on its merry way and the next milestone in this
13:08action-packed day is Johnny Martin's 50 in his maiden test innings. A 50 that's greeted by
13:13heartfelt applause from the Melbourne crowd.
13:17However, the partnership is destined not to reach the century and Ramadon strikes the vital
13:22blow by Bowling Mackay to end a typically determined innings of 74. Australia 9 for 348 and Mackay and
13:30Martin added 97. Sydney side of Frank Misson is also playing his first test match and he faces Ramadon
13:36while at least one of the crowd can't restrain himself any longer. The end comes when Valentine
13:43bowls and Martin attempts to hit him out of the ground. Martin out for 55 and the Australian total 348
13:49leaving the West Indies 10 minutes to bat before stumps. The Australians take the field and Hunt and
13:55Solomon are the opening batsmen for the West Indies. Left arm fast bowler Alan Davidson will open the attack
14:00and the Australians are hoping for a quick wicket before stumps. Davidson bowls the first ball of the
14:06innings to Conrad Hunt. Davidson bowls again and the West Indies open their account as Hunt gets a single on the onside.
14:19The single brings Joe Solomon to face Davidson and as he waits for the left-hander to bowl again,
14:28the slip field of Benno in the gully, Mackay third slip, Harvey second, Simpson first and wicket
14:33keeper Wally Grout wait expectantly for any chance that might come their way.
14:47They don't have to wait long for the anticipated chance. Davidson bowls the next ball to Solomon.
14:58A faint touch and the West Indies have lost their first wicket. Solomon out caught behind for no score
15:04and at stumps on the first day the West Indies in reply to Australia's first innings total of 348
15:09have lost one wicket for one. It's another day of near century heat in Melbourne as Seymour Nurse and
15:16Conrad Hunt easily distinguished in his white sun hat continue the West Indies innings. Nurse takes
15:22guard and Alan Davidson will bowl the last ball of his unfinished over. There's almost a sensation first
15:27ball but Davidson's appeal for LBW is disallowed and Nurse lives to fight another day.
15:33At this moment the shade temperature is 97 degrees and the big crowd of just on 40,000 would like a cool
15:42change and they'd also like to see Frank Misson bowl a successful first over in test cricket.
15:51Misson's second ball. He's bowling to Conrad Hunt. An edge, Simpson dives at first slip and Hunt is out for one.
15:59Misson's teammates don't attempt to hide their delight at his early success and at the fact that a class
16:04batsman like Hunt is on his way back to the pavilion. West Indies two for one, Davidson and Misson
16:09each a wicket and the brilliant Rowan Kanhai at the crease. Misson bowls again and Kanhai is off the mark
16:18with a flashing square cut which brings him three runs to open his account. Kanhai scored a scintillating
16:23double century on this ground against Victoria six weeks ago and looks to be set for another big score
16:28in this test match. When Nurse faces Misson a shot to square leg brings a single and this is
16:37unexpectedly increased to five when Martin's return to the bowler's end goes through for four overthrows.
16:42A pleasant change of luck for the West Indies after their early misfortune.
16:48Davidson again and Nurse's shot into the covers is fielded by 12th man Klein fielding substitute for
16:53the injured Mackay. Kanhai is obviously prepared to attack the bowling and once he beats the close
16:58slip field it's a fairly safe bet that umpire Hoy will eventually signal a boundary.
17:05Davidson is bowling with plenty of life but Kanhai is in brilliant form
17:08and his fluent off drive brings him another three runs.
17:17It's a great recovery by the West Indians and is fully appreciated by the suntan crowd.
17:30Misson continues bowling to three slips and two gullies hoping for the batsmen to find an edge
17:35but with Kanhai almost everything is hit plumb in the middle.
17:44Nurse on the other hand is content to let the runs come but he's playing an extremely useful innings
17:48for his side and in Davidson's next over a cut through the slips adds four to the score.
17:53Davidson's reply is not long in coming but Nurse sees the bouncer all the way and the fast left-arm bowler
18:10has Nurse playing him defensively during the remainder of the over.
18:13After four overs from the southern end Misson gives way to Australian captain Richie Benno
18:22and Kanhai watches the leg spinner carefully before attempting to play any any of his strokes against him.
18:27Nurse too is quite content to treat Benno with respect as the West Indies are still very much in the innings building stages.
18:44After 50 minutes of play Kanhai and Nurse have added 38 and the total stands at two for 39.
18:49Davidson bowls on in the scorching Melbourne sun and Kanhai greets him with an equally scorching off drive
18:57that burns its way over the green grass to the boundary.
19:02Lovers of cricket are loud in their praises of the superb stroke making of Rowan Kanhai.
19:12When Davidson bowls again to Nurse central figure is wicket keeper Wally Grout
19:16whose diving save adds to the interest of the morning's cricket.
19:20Twelve eager hands wait for Seymour Nurse to make a rash stroke against Davidson
19:25but Nurse just won't be tempted.
19:28As the field changes over and Benno bowls again to Kanhai there's more action and more runs.
19:37Nurse tries to emulate his more dashing partner but the single just isn't there.
19:42When Benno calls Johnny Martin into the attack to relieve Davidson
19:45the move is greeted by a burst of applause from the enthusiastic crowd.
19:49Their enthusiasm matches that of Martin spinning the ball from hand to hand in characteristic fashion
19:54and anxious to get on with the job.
19:58Martin's first ball in test cricket is a good one.
20:01It must be when a batsman of the caliber of Kanhai is forced onto the defensive.
20:05But you can't keep a good batsman down and Kanhai pulls Martin through mid-wicket
20:09sending Richie Benno on a fruitless chase to the boundary.
20:12Four more onto the West Indies total and Kanhai's innings now in full flower.
20:21Kanhai square cuts again for a single and another blemish in the otherwise
20:25excellent Australian fielding results in one overthrow.
20:47There's more excitement when Benno bowls and Nurse gives a semblance of a chance to Simpson at slip.
20:52It's still heatwave weather but when light rain begins to fall and the crowd makes for shelter
20:57it seems that the anticipated cool change is soon to become a reality.
21:01Nurse continues to play Benno circumspectly but in typical West Indian fashion takes runs when they're offering.
21:07One of the highlights of the morning's play was Les Favel's returns from the outfield.
21:12But the highlight was the glorious batting of Rowan Kanhai.
21:18Irresistible batting like this from a man who came to the wicket when he signed had lost two wickets
21:22to one chasing a total of 348. This boundary brings up Kanhai's 50 and makes the West Indies a much more
21:29respectable two for 80.
21:35Nurse is not so confident but is giving Kanhai great support and both batsmen score off Martins next over.
21:51At this point the applause is almost continuous with both batsmen scoring off the spinners.
21:56Nurse is shot to deep mid wicket gives McDonald a long chase and his return from the deep is typical of the Australian out cricket.
22:06Three to Nurse brings Kanhai back and while he's at the crease the cricket's always lively.
22:16More evidence of the quality of the Australian fielding is provided when O'Neill's bullet-like
22:21return breaks the stumps.
22:28Martin again and Kanhai hits him high over mid wicket for three runs to bring up the West Indies
22:33100 in little worse than even time. A great effort by Kanhai and Nurse considering the position when
22:39they came together. Now the West Indies are at least an even chance in their chase after the Australian
22:44total. With Kanhai going after the runs, Nurse is doing a first-class job staying with him.
22:51In an effort to break the partnership, Benno brings Missen back into the attack,
22:57but Kanhai continues to score.
22:59One more onto the score when Nurse gets a late call from a Missen no ball and can't put it away.
23:16Missen's second spell sees him bowling with only two slips and an accurate over ends with
23:21Nurse playing defensively. With lunch approaching, Benno brings leg spinner Bob Simpson into the
23:28attack in a further effort to break the partnership which has realised more than a century.
23:33That one should have landed in the Olympic stand. For the most part,
23:36Simpson bowls wide of the off stump and his first over is a maiden.
23:43With the clock showing one minute to one, the umpires decide on one more over before lunch,
23:47and in it, Davidson almost ends the stand when he has Nurse playing at and missing an outswinger.
23:56Ever on the attack, Benno places himself and Martin close on the leg side in an attempt to entice
24:01Nurse, but the Australians can't take advantage of the move as Davidson bowls wide of the stumps.
24:06Nurse safely sees out the over from Davidson, and as the players leave the field for lunch,
24:11the West Indies score stands at two for 105, Kanhai on 69 and Nurse 33.
24:20During the lunch break, Melbourne's heat wave ends and down comes the rain.
24:24The ground staff is quick to apply the covers, and after a break of half an hour, play resumes with
24:29Benno bowling to Kanhai. As Martin feels, there's ample evidence of how slippery the rain has made the outfield.
24:35There's further incident when Kanhai deflects the ball to Simpson at slip.
24:43Benno seems to think it was a catch, but umpire Eager turns down the appeal,
24:47and Benno wastes no time in getting on with the game.
24:55With conditions made tricky by the damp conditions, the batsmen are on the defensive,
24:59and Davidson bowls a maiden over to Nurse.
25:17After removing some muddy turf from his boots, Benno continues the attack, and he too bowls a maiden,
25:22this time to Kanhai, and over highlighted by a superb return from the covers by Harvey, which breaks the stumps.
25:39Down comes the rain again, and after a signal from the umpires, the covers are again brought onto the
25:44ground for a second interruption, this time permanent as the players race for cover. There's been only half an
25:50hour's play since lunch, and in that time, against some accurate bowling, Kanhai and Nurse have added only three runs.
26:03In the meantime, there's some comic relief for the crowd from the inevitable character,
26:07who invariably appears on the scene to provide entertainment. Melbourne Cricket Ground curator Bill
26:12Watt isn't speedy enough to bring the offender to justice, and it's finally left to the law to take its own course.
26:20The amusing incident helps to pass the time, but the rain continues, and the umpires decide no more
26:40players possible, with the West Indies two for 108, 240 runs behind the Australian total, with eight wickets
26:47standing and three days to play, which is evenly poised, and all eyes are focused on Rowan Kanhai,
26:56as he takes guard from umpire Hoy, prior to facing the first ball of the morning from Alan Davidson.
27:01A straight drive to open the day's proceedings, and Kanhai's score goes to 72.
27:17For Alan Davidson, such treatment so early in the morning is harsh, but there's more to follow.
27:22There's no chance of stopping that one, and Kanhai takes six runs off Davidson's opening over.
27:30At the other end, with Richie Benno bowling, Seymour Nurse on 35 continues from where he left off on
27:35Saturday, playing each ball on its merits, picking up the odd single when it's offering.
27:39But Benno is bowling well, and Kanhai's innings is not all attack.
27:53The next over from Davidson is a mixture, but Nurse is equal to the occasion.
28:18Apart from Davidson's opening over to Kanhai, it's been acquired beginning,
28:21with seven runs being taken from the first three overs, but again in Benno's next over,
28:26Kanhai cuts loose with mixed fortunes.
28:38As usual, Neil Harvey's return brings applause from the tremendous crowd of 65,000,
28:44and there's more action in Davidson's next over, when the left-hander attempts Kanhai to hook a short
28:48one, and Harvey at cover accepts the easiest of chances. There's general regret that Kanhai didn't
28:54reach his 100, but his dismissal has swung the game Australia's way. Garfield Sobers appears for the
28:59first time on the Melbourne Cricket Ground before a crowd on tenterhooks to see his great deeds for
29:04themselves. But right from the start, the world test record holder doesn't look in form,
29:09and before the day is over, he's destined to be dismissed twice for a total of nine runs.
29:20In Benno's next over, Sobers is off the mark to mid-wicket and O'Neill,
29:24and Nurse too scores from Benno on the onside.
29:37Now watch Grout's lightning work behind the stumps as Benno beats Sobers' bat.
29:42It was a near thing, and Sobers is content to let discretion be the better part of valour for the
29:46remainder of the over.
29:47When Davidson bowls again, Nurse removes from storage his favourite off-drive, and when O'Neill
29:55feels his enormous throw from just inside the boundary brings an outburst of wonder from
30:00the crowd as it reaches Grout on the foot.
30:07Such treatment, according to Alan Davidson, should not go unpunished, and Seymour Nurse is the sufferer.
30:13Generally speaking, Davidson is giving a fine exhibition of controlled bowling,
30:16and the batsman can take few risks when he's on the job.
30:25Fellow all-rounder Australian skipper Richie Benno too is right on the spot.
30:29Just watch as he pins down one of the world's greatest batsmen, Garfield Sobers.
30:42The West Indies are battling to consolidate, and the first hour's cricket has produced only 29
30:57runs for the loss of Kanhai's wicket. Misson returns to the attack, and Nurse plays him with
31:01a mixture of strokes.
31:14Drinks spell the end of Sobers. He's out in Benno's next over attempting to cut,
31:19when Simpson at slip takes a nicely judged catch. A disappointed Sobers out for nine,
31:24and the West Indies in real trouble with four down for 139, and Captain Frank Warrell coming to the
31:30crease in an effort to stem the tide.
31:42Benno is bowling better than at any time during the innings,
31:45and Warrell is none too confident as he plays out the remainder of the over.
31:52Meanwhile, Nurse, proving to be the sheet anchor of the West Indies innings, continues to play the
31:56bowling at least as confidently as some of his more illustrious partners, and the enthusiastic
32:01Johnny Martin comes in for plenty of work at square leg.
32:07On the other hand, Warrell doesn't seem to be able to gauge the pace of the pitch,
32:10and it's no surprise when he cuts Misson onto his stumps and is out without scoring.
32:16A disastrous blow for the West Indies, but a great moment for Frank Misson in his first test.
32:20Half the side out, and the visitors still 206 behind, with Vice Captain Jerry Alexander
32:27following his skipper to the wicket. Alexander's quickly off the mark, and the general feeling
32:31is that while he's still there with Nurse, all is not lost.
32:41Benno again, and after a quick single to Alexander, Nurse on 49 has the strike.
32:46A dogged 50 to Seymour Nurse, a half century fully appreciated by the huge crowd of 65,000.
33:0141 runs in a hard-fought 90 minutes cricket, but with bowling and fielding of this standard,
33:05little more can be expected. As lunch approaches, Alan Davidson is still bowling on in a great spell,
33:11and in this over, he strikes another blow for Australia when he forces Alexander into edging him
33:16to second slip where Les Favel holds a sharp chance. It's a great performance by Davidson,
33:21and as the players leave the field for lunch, the West Indies are six for 160,
33:26with Sonny Ramadon to come in after lunch.
33:31A good rest, and Davidson is back on the job after lunch bowling to Ramadon.
33:36Although Ramadon has been promoted in the batting order since he last visited this country,
33:40he's facing Davidson at his best, and he's out when Davidson knocks back his leg stump.
33:47Ramadon out without scoring, and the West Indies now seven for 160, Davidson four for 38,
33:54and Nissen two for 36. Wes Hall is next in, and much to the delight of everyone,
33:59he wastes no time in cracking Davidson through the slips for a speedily run three.
34:13When Davidson bowls again, Nurse has another life,
34:17as Simpson makes a terrific effort to catch him at first slip.
34:20Now let's watch Wesley Hall, the crowd pleaser, as he faces Benno. When Hall's batting,
34:28there's always something doing, whether it's running between wickets,
34:31an exaggerated defensive stroke, or an appeal for LBW.
34:43There's no doubting the popularity of Wesley Hall, and this seems to apply equally to the players,
34:56as well as to the cricketing public. Seymour Nurse continues to play a mixture of shots,
35:02but for the present his luck holds. Not so Wesley Hall. A huge swing, and then bold neck and crop by
35:09Davidson, with Martin smartly catching the ball. Hall out for five, the West Indies eight for 166,
35:16and Alan Davidson's fifth wicket. Hall is replaced by his fast bowling partner, Chester Watson,
35:21and Benno continues the attack to Nurse. Nurse has decided the time has come to attack,
35:27but he still can't put Benno away. As the West Indies players watch from their dressing room,
35:33they see the ninth wicket fall when Nurse is caught behind off Davidson.
35:37A wonderfully courageous and patient innings of 70, during which Nurse was at the wicket for over
35:42five hours. West Indies nine for 177, Davidson six for 49, as Valentine faces Davidson,
35:49and pushes him to point for a cheeky single.
35:55Now Watson takes the long handle to Davidson, and lops him high to long off. Again O'Neill as the
36:01fieldsman, and once more a superb return from the boundary is greeted by spontaneous applause.
36:06But in Benno's next over, West Indies innings comes to an end when Watson goes for a big hit,
36:13and McDonald coming in from the long on boundary, judges the catch nicely. West Indies all out 181,
36:20167 behind, and Alan Davidson taking the bowling honours with a splendid six for 53. Benno applies the
36:27follow on, and Hunt and Solomon are the opening batsmen for the second time.
36:32After a ten minute spell, Davidson begins bowling again, and the innings begins with the most inauspicious
36:37stroke from Conrad Hunt. But Hunt is soon seeing them, and this shot to fine leg brings him too.
36:47Anything short from Davidson, and Hunt hooks unmercifully, usually reaching the boundary in the
36:53process. The power of his hooking can be gauged by the distance the ball has rebounded from the pickets.
37:04As the tee adjournment approaches, Hunt continues to do the lion's share of the scoring,
37:08being particularly severe on any short deliveries from either Davidson or Misson,
37:12now bowling, while his partner Joe Solomon is perfectly happy to play the role of the lesser
37:17light while Hunt shines. At tee, the West Indies in their uphill fight are none for 30,
37:26and after the interval, when Benno continues, Hunt meets out similar
37:29treatment accorded to Davidson and Misson.
37:42But when Solomon faces Benno, the West Indians are to suffer a bitter blow.
37:46Before completing his stroke, Solomon loses his cap, which dislodges the bales,
37:50and on appeal, he's given out by umpire Hoy, hit wicket. He hasn't made many runs,
37:55but Solomon has been a useful partner for Hunt, and his dismissal gives the Australians the
37:59breakthrough they'd hoped for. West Indies one for 40, and Nurse back at the crease.
38:07But Nurse's second inning stay is brief. After making three, he plays a ball to mid-on,
38:12and is run out by a brilliant return from Alan Davidson, which breaks the stumps.
38:17West Indies now two for 51, of which Conrad Hunt has made 41.
38:22Kanhai joins Hunt, and with the all-spin attack operating, Kanhai is quick to get off the mark.
38:39Benno takes himself off and brings Simpson into the attack, but Kanhai looks full of runs at this
38:44early stage of his innings. His partner Conrad Hunt continues on his attractive way. The square leg,
38:49he completes a fine 50, including five fours.
38:59Hunt 50, but the West Indies are still 85 runs behind with eight wickets standing.
39:04When Martin bowls again, Hunt keeps the scoreboard moving, but there's more trouble ahead. After
39:10playing some attractive strokes, Kanhai slashes at Martin, and for the second time during the day,
39:15commits batting suicide as Misson takes the catch at deep mid-on. Kanhai out for 25,
39:21and a great triumph for the New South Wales all-rounder, his first wicket in test cricket.
39:26Free for 97 now, with Sobers coming in to join Hunt.
39:29Watch now as Martin bowls his first ball to Sobers. Sobers gets an edge, and Simpson takes the catch at slip.
39:45Garfield sobers out without scoring, and the West Indies four for 99, with Worrell, the new batsman,
39:50and Johnny Martin on a hat-trick. The hat-trick save, but only just, as next ball Worrell snicks Martin,
39:58and Simpson takes yet another catch at slip. The West Indies captain dismissed twice in the one day for
40:03the dreaded pair, and Martin taking his third wicket in four balls. Half the side out, and still 68 runs
40:10short. New batsmen Jerry Alexander and Conrad Hunt confer on their policy for the remaining overs,
40:16and when Martin bowls again, the policy is clearly defined.
40:29Martin's had a great day, although Jerry Alexander is doing his best to spoil it. As far as the crowd
40:35is concerned, it's been a day of action-packed cricket, and in the closing minutes, Conrad Hunt
40:40and Jerry Alexander continue to score at a run a minute, even though their side is right up against it. At
40:45Stumps on the third day, West Indies in their second innings, 5 for 129. Hunt 74, Alexander 19,
40:53needing 38 more to make Australia bat again. Conditions are cool and cloudy, and a light shower
41:00holds up the start of play for 10 minutes. Richie Benno continues the attack to Jerry Alexander on 19,
41:10and Alexander gives evidence that he's anxious for the West Indies to score runs and score them quickly.
41:19Conrad Hunt on 74 has been there since the innings began, and no one would begrudge him a hard-earned
41:25century. Benno's tactics at the start are to combine spin with speed, and Alan Davidson is his opening
41:31partner in this over to Alexander. Good fielding by Harvey prevents any run here, and then Alexander,
41:37after watching Davidson's bowling carefully, let's go again with a shot that brings him two more runs,
41:42which Harvey can't cut off.
41:57Benno's next over sees a copybook straight drive from Conrad Hunt, one of the few occasions in this
42:03match that a West Indian batsman has really jumped out to an Australian spinner. Four more to Hunt,
42:08and another single when he turns Benno behind square left.
42:19Benno bowls his faster ball to Alexander, and it's a good one, but Alexander and Hunt are equal to the task,
42:25and bring up the 150 in 208 minutes, now only 17 runs behind.
42:32Davidson again, and Hunt's single into the gully becomes three runs when Harvey's return is not
42:37intercepted, and two overthrows result.
42:39When Hunt gets the strike again, he continues to score off Davidson, and Australia's 12th man
42:53Lindsay Kline is still fielding substitute for the injured Mackay. After bowling well,
42:59but without success, Benno gives the ball to Martin, and Hunt welcomes the change with another fine on
43:04drive. Alexander treats Martin with more respect, and there are no more runs taken from the spinner's
43:19first over of this spell. It's a double bowling change, with Misson taking over from Davidson,
43:30and immediately getting past Hunt's defence, appealing unsuccessfully for LBW. Hunt is far
43:36from being deterred, and when Misson bowls again, he adds once more to his score.
43:48The vital partnership is flourishing, and in Martin's next over, both batsmen score freely.
44:00Hunt is now rapidly approaching his century, and it comes in Misson's next over, when he brilliantly
44:20hooks the first ball for four. Hunt's 100 is scored in 243 minutes, and includes eight fours, and it takes the
44:29West Indies total to five for 167, saving the innings defeat.
44:39Les Favel continues to shine in the field, whether close in or in the outfield, but right now the
44:44crowd's more interested in a shower of rain than in Favel's fielding. The rain's not heavy enough to stop
44:50play, and after another run is added to the total for a leg by, Jerry Alexander puts the West Indies
44:55another four runs in front of Australia, when he cuts Misson through slips, giving the fieldsman no
45:00chance of stopping it.
45:07It's a terrific fight by the West Indies, they're now 14 runs in front with five wickets to fall,
45:12but tragedy is ahead when O'Neill bowls a wide full toss to Hunt, and he gets a faint edge to Grout,
45:17who takes a fine catch. Conrad Hunt out for a great fighting 110, and the West Indies six for 186.
45:2519 runs on, with Sonny Ramadan the new batsman. Ramadan's quickly off the mark with a single,
45:32and there's still some hope that if someone can stay with Alexander, the West Indies can yet make
45:36a fighting finish of this match. Sonny Ramadan is certainly doing all he can to build the total,
45:42but Lady Luck is not on Sonny Ramadan's side for much longer. After scoring three, including two
45:48from this square cut, he's out in Benno's next over, attempting to hit the Australian captain out
45:53of the ground, and being neatly stumped by Wally Grout. Grout has given a typically sound performance
46:01in this test, making very few mistakes and having a hand in his usual share of dismissals. The West Indies
46:06is seven for 193, with Wesley Hall joining the plucky Alexander on 42. With lunch approaching,
46:13Davidson bowls again, and Alexander gets two runs closer to his 50 with a splendid cover drive.
46:23A Davidson bouncer is neatly evaded by Alexander, and as the players leave the field for lunch,
46:29the West Indies total is seven for 199, Alexander 45, and Hall 3. They're 32 runs in front,
46:36they have to face the prospect of a new ball almost immediately on resumption after the interval.
46:45It's Davidson again, and Alexander's single to mid-on becomes a useful two runs when McDonald miss fields.
46:59Wesley Hall's having trouble with something in his eye, but he's able to open it to watch Alexander
47:10drive Davidson bowling with the new ball through the covers for three. Neil Harvey chases the ball
47:16out towards the boundary, and just watch his return into Grout's gloves.
47:19That eye is still giving Wesley Hall trouble, and after some attention from Jerry Alexander,
47:30permission is obtained from Richie Benno for Hall to leave the field and have it attended to.
47:40Play is held up temporarily while Hall is off the field, and he's not long back when he loses his
47:44wicket. Clean bowled by Davidson. Ball out for four, giving Davidson his first wicket for the innings,
47:50and the West Indies in real trouble with eight down for 206, but Alexander still there on 51.
48:02Chester Watson is the new batsman, but Davidson can't tempt him this over.
48:08Rapidly running out of partners, Alexander decides to attack in Misson's next over,
48:13in an effort to give the Australians at least a reasonable total to chase.
48:33Watson is out off the last ball of the over, foolishly attempting a second run,
48:37when only one was needed for Alexander to retain the strike. What an innings of misfortunes. Two run outs,
48:43one hit wicket and century-maker Hunt out off a wide full toss. West Indies now nine for 221.
48:50Alexander still there on 61, and Valentine the last man in. With Davidson, Alexander has the strike,
48:57and he scores a single near the end of the over, leaving Valentine to endeavour to hold up his end.
49:06It was a close thing, but Alf Valentine's still there.
49:09A great and at times brilliant innings comes to an end in Davidson's next over,
49:13when Gerry Alexander gets an outside edge, and Wally Grout does the rest. Alexander out for 72,
49:19and the West Indies innings closes at 233, leaving Australia 67 to win.
49:27Simpson and McDonald are the Australian openers, and they're going to face Wesley Hall,
49:31on a wicket that is beginning to show signs of wear, and can best be described as too paced.
49:36Not a very encouraging thought against a bowler of Hall's sizzling pace.
49:45Hall begins his seemingly endless run in, bowling the first ball of the innings to Simpson,
49:50and it's a taste of things to come.
49:58Simpson beaten, and Hall positively demands a decision in his favour for a catch behind from
50:03Umpire Eager, but it's turned down, and the next one is almost as close. After feeling for two or
50:08three, Simpson finally makes contact with the bat, and the scoreboard is on the way to recording the
50:1367 runs needed for an Australian victory. Now it's Colin McDonald's turn to face the music,
50:20as he has faced it so often before against Wesley Hall.
50:26Let's study the colourful West Indian, as he walks back the 40 paces to the end of his bowling mark,
50:32to bowl the last ball of his first over to McDonald. An over, rated by many keen judge of
50:38cricket, to be one of the fastest they've ever seen bowled on the Melbourne cricket ground.
50:43At the other end, Chester Watson bowls, and still there's no respite for the Australian opening batsman.
50:58When Watson bowls again, Simpson plays the first really confident stroke of the innings,
51:03and there's another run on to the total when McDonald plays Watson off his pad for a leg by,
51:08with Garfield Sobers making sure that they run no more than one.
51:18The field changes, and Hall is on the job once again getting a ton of lift out of the pitch,
51:22and it's all McDonald can do to prevent himself from edging a catch.
51:26Hall continues to bowl at a cracking pace, but McDonald is starting to pick up valuable runs.
51:31In the long run, Wesley Hall is McDonald's master today, and when he turns him to fine legs, Sobers takes a neat catch to give the West Indies their first break from the West Indies.
51:41In the long run, Wesley Hall is McDonald's master today, and when he turns him to fine legs, Sobers takes a neat catch to give the West Indies their first breakthrough.
52:01McDonald out for 13, and the Australian total one for 27, still 40 runs needed for victory, and a lot more action before they get them.
52:11Neil Harvey's turn to face the music, and again Wesley Hall scores a direct hit.
52:21Hall to Harvey, and now watch wicket keeper Jerry Alexander's magnificent diving catch to dismiss Harvey without scoring.
52:28Australia two for 27, and by no means a certainty to win if Hall can keep up a blistering attack like this.
52:36Norm O'Neill at the wicket, and there's almost a sensation of the first ball he receives from Hall.
52:42A unanimous appeal for a catch behind, but O'Neill is ruled not out, and he survives the remainder of Hall's over.
52:48There's universal applause for a magnificent over from Wesley Hall, and when Watson bowls again,
52:57there's a temporary lull after the storm, as Simpson takes a total of three runs on both sides of the wicket.
53:03But it's only a temporary respite. Watson bowls to O'Neill.
53:18An attempted sweep wrapped on the pad, and after some deliberation, O'Neill is given out by umpire Hoy.
53:23O'Neill out without scoring, Australia three for 30, less than halfway to their goal, and three star batsmen back in the pavilion.
53:32Les Favel comes to the wicket, determined to help Simpson stop the rot, and immediately sets about his task in tradesmanlike fashion.
53:41There's much conjecture as to whether Hall can continue in his devastating form,
53:45but it's not to be, as both Favel and Simpson shape more confidently and bring the Australian victory nearer.
54:02At T, after 55 minutes batting, Australia's second innings total stands at three for 34, with Simpson 14 and Favel 2.
54:09But after the interval, Hall is on the job again, and Simpson close to edging outside his off stump.
54:16Hall is still full of fire, but Simpson is equal to the task, and there's no further breakthrough.
54:24When Watson bowls again, both Simpson and Favel are able to score more freely,
54:28and any additional run, such as an overthrow, is gratefully accepted in this tense period of cricket, when every single run counts.
54:39Both Favel and Simpson are finding that they can play their shots much more readily against Chester Watson than Hall,
54:54and Simpson's classic cover drive for four is rated as the finest stroke of the innings.
54:59All again, and already Favel has shown a willingness to hook anything pitched short outside the leg stump,
55:14and three more runs bring victory in sight.
55:16All still bowling like a demon, and Simpson this time is given the verdict following the appeal for LBW.
55:32Australia three for 63, now needing only four runs to win the test.
55:35All and Watson have bowled unchanged, and Favel still wants to hook.
55:39This time, Favel does get Watson away, and in spite of some smart work by Jerry Alexander, it's three runs to win.
55:54Still at Hall, and when he bows again, it seems that Favel and Simpson are content to reach the magical 67 runs in singles.
56:01The scoreboard showing Australia three for 66, the scoreboard showing Australia three for 66, the scores are level.
56:25And now here's the winning stroke as Wesley Hall bowls to Les Favel.
56:28He cuts him down the gully, and the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground is ravaged by the invader.
56:41After a sensational period when they lost three quick wickets, Australia run out winners by seven wickets,
56:47scoring 348 and three for 70 to the West Indies 181 and 233.
56:53With two tests played, Australia now leads one up in the series, following the tie in Brisbane.
56:58And both the mountain scene together, they used the run out different conventions, if the
57:01over-the-missan
57:17last year intoition.
