00:00So this Brendan Swordsby story going on with the Texas Tech Red Raiders is very interesting.
00:06Obviously, he's supposedly on a leave to help him out with his gambling habit.
00:13So Texas Tech had signed him to a $6 million nil deal.
00:18Reportedly, obviously, all the issues that went on with him betting at high school.
00:22Also, when he was a backup quarterback with the Indiana Hoosiers,
00:26he came out a couple days ago saying that, you know, we need time away from the program.
00:32And Texas Tech, so granted that, all of a sudden now, we're hearing he may be looking at going through
00:39the supplemental draft.
00:40The supplemental draft is an off draft.
00:42Like if you remember back in the day, USFL players went into a supplemental draft like Reggie White and also
00:49Steve Young.
00:50And yours truly, I went into a supplemental draft as well.
00:53This is how the supplemental draft works.
00:55If you get drafted in the supplemental draft in 2026, whatever that pick is, and I'll just use my pick,
01:02that was the 56th player taken in the 1988 draft.
01:0787, I was able to go and I was third.
01:10I was the third pick with Brian Bosworth and Chris Carter would go on to be a Hall of Famer.
01:15The following year in 88, the Buccaneers lost that third round pick by selecting me.
01:21Now, here's the issue here that Swordsby has.
01:25This is surrounding gambling.
01:27You're going into the National Football League where they prohibit players from being involved at all in any way with
01:35gambling.
01:36You know, when you walk into an NFL locker room, there's a giant player in the locker room with full
01:42gear on.
01:43And it says right there, gambling is prohibited in any way, shape, or form, and you will be suspended.
01:51You're going into a supplemental draft thinking that you're going to roll into an NFL team with the tag of
01:59having an issue in gambling,
02:00gambling, and the league is going to be cool with that?
02:03Absolutely no way.
02:04I get it.
02:05The NFL today is surrounding with gambling.
02:08We see so many betting ways that fans can make place bets and also prop bets on how you can
02:14bet on the game.
02:15But when it comes to the players, they are sticklers when it comes to having gambling around the players.
02:21Here's something else with the supplemental draft for the kid.
02:24It's one of the worst things I ever did in my life.
02:28If I had to do this all over again, okay, for me, I would never have gone into the supplemental
02:35draft.
02:35I would have waited because here was my case.
02:38On Friday, I was a Miami Hurricane, and I was getting ready to play the Florida Gators that Saturday.
02:45That Sunday, I would end up playing against the Chicago Bears and Walter Payton.
02:51So in a matter of 48 hours, I went from being a college kid to a pro kid,
02:56and there I was playing Tampa Stadium against the Chicago Bears in 1987.
03:01I was not prepared mentally nor physically prepared to understand the rigors of what it takes to play in the
03:08NFL.
03:08You're not around your players.
03:10You don't know playbook.
03:11All of that.
03:13Name me a player that has gone in a supplemental draft that has gone on,
03:17and I'm talking not the USFL supplemental draft.
03:20I'm talking more so a supplemental draft.
03:23What?
03:23Chris Carter and Bernie Kosar?
03:27Name me another player that has gone in the supplemental draft to gone on and had great success or played
03:33over a long period of time.
03:35It's not a way to go.
03:37And the kid's got gambling surrounding him.
03:40This is not going to be conducive to the kid getting into the National Football League and starting his NFL
03:46career.
03:46If I were him, I'd wait a year.
03:49I'd wait until next year's draft in 2027 to get yourself an opportunity to play.
03:56Now, again, it's different today also because now you have the practice roster.
04:00You get a chance of 71 guys making an NFL football team.
04:05But to go in as a supplemental draft, and especially with the tag of gambling.
04:10Folks, we're going to see more of this stuff with gambling.
04:13Is that the kind of player an organization is going to draft that the NFL prohibits gambling in any way,
04:22shape, or form?
04:23They don't even want you betting on turtle races, let alone betting on college and pro games.
04:29You think you're going to get drafted going into the NFL with gambling as one of the reasons you went
04:36into the supplemental draft?
04:37I went into the supplemental draft because it so-called exhausted my eligibility.
04:43It had nothing to do with gambling.
04:45This kid's going to go into the supplemental draft and think that an NFL team.
04:49Let's draft a kid who got thrown out of college, basically, for gambling, and you're going to bring that into
04:58your organization?
04:59No way.
05:01The kid should wait until next year's draft.
05:03Clean everything up that has been said about him with this entire situation.
05:09Go to his rehab.
05:11Rehab his reputation.
05:13And then go to the NFL combines and get a shot to go in the NFL way.
05:17Go through the combines and give yourself a chance to at least have a puncher's chance of making it in
05:22the NFL.
05:23The supplemental draft is a landmine.
