00:02Tim McCallum takes the train almost every day.
00:06So I do need either a train guard or a platform station master
00:10to be able to help me get on and off the train.
00:12But come Tuesday, he fears his commute will be more difficult.
00:15New rostering changes will mean his local Springfield station
00:18is no longer staffed past 1pm on weekdays
00:21and unstaffed entirely on weekends.
00:24It's making it much harder for those living with disabilities
00:27to be able to use.
00:28Why should we be discriminated against in terms of
00:31not being able to have the assistance at the stations when we need it?
00:35According to the state's main transport union,
00:38a third of South East Queensland's 150 stations
00:41will be unmanned on Saturday and Sundays.
00:44They've called it an extreme move which will reduce public safety.
00:49For people who might come along with ill intent,
00:53they're less likely to take antisocial behaviour.
00:56if there's somebody at the station.
00:58Queensland Rail says it is rejigging where it puts staff
01:01because some stations are getting busier
01:03while others are almost empty outside peak hours.
01:06Here at Milton Station, it's a mixed bag.
01:08No longer staffed on weekends, but during special events
01:11there will now be more staff.
01:13Queensland Rail denies the system will be less safe
01:16because it has doubled its ranks of revolving security officers
01:19from 35 to 70.
01:21And it says onboard train guards can help passengers who need assistance.
01:26I think there are going to be passengers with disabilities
01:29left on the platforms when trains depart
01:31because the guards have not seen them.
01:34Changes at all impacted stations will be available
01:37on Queensland Rail's website on Tuesday.
