On April 29, 1945, U.S. troops liberated Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp. They found thousands of corpses and 30,000 survivors reduced to skeletons. Shock and rage swept the soldiers and inmates alike. What followed became known as the Dachau Massacre—SS guards were lined up, shot, beaten, and lynched by survivors and liberators alike. 00:00Some inmates swore to all that was sacred to them that if they could ever kill their SS guards,
00:05they would not hesitate. And they didn't. American soldiers allowed, and sometimes even
00:12encouraged the inmates to carry out retribution against their former captors, and SS men,
00:17capos, and informers were beaten badly with fists, sticks, and shovels.
00:23The prisoners' revenge started when they caught the SS guards,
00:26and one of them elbowed one of the two inmates out of his way. The prisoners knocked the guards down
00:31and killed them all. As one American soldier later said,
00:36we stood aside and watched while these guards were beaten to death,
00:40beaten so badly that their bodies were ripped open and in its protruded. We watched with less
00:45feeling than if a dog were being beaten. In truth, it might be said that we were completely without
00:50feeling. Deep anger and hate had temporarily numbed our emotions.
