00:00In December 1944, Joachim Piper got a major role in the German Ardennes Offensive,
00:06also known as the Battle of the Bulge. On the 17th of December 1944, Piper's forces
00:13encountered an American convoy near the Belgian village of Malmedy. After capturing the American
00:19soldiers, his troops executed at least 84 of them. Survivors later described how they were
00:26lined up in a field and shot by machine guns. Wounded soldiers were finished off with shots
00:32to the head. Some of the fleeing prisoners of war ran to and hid in a nearby café.
00:38Members of the Waffen-SS then set the café afire and killed every U.S. prisoner of war
