July 1944. As the Red Army liberates Majdanek in German-occupied Poland, the world begins to grasp the full scale of Nazi crimes. Among those responsible was Elsa Ehrich — a former slaughterhouse worker who rose through the ranks of the SS to become head overseer of the women’s camp.
At Ravensbrück and later Majdanek, Ehrich conducted brutal roll calls, beat prisoners with cold cruelty, and took part in selections for the gas chambers. Survivors recalled her sadism, her violence toward women and children, and her zeal during mass murder operations, including Operation Harvest Festival — the largest single massacre of the Holocaust.
In 1948, she stood trial in Lublin. The verdict would seal her fate.

00:00Erich took part in the selection for the gas chamber, and she is believed responsible for
00:05the death of thousands of women and children. One Majdanic survivor later recalled,
00:11To lure them, she brought cocoa and candy to the children's barracks, and a moment later,
00:17the truck showed up. Jewish children got on them smiling, still with candy in their hands.
00:23The cars drove straight to the crematorium. Erich, once a butcher's shop assistant,
00:28was depicted as primitive by her former female inmates. However, at Majdanic she had the power
00:34to decide about matters of life and death. In the camp, Erich would become infamous for slapping
00:40and kicking the prisoners for no reason, and enjoyed brutally harassing as well as beating up
00:45especially weak, emaciated, and old women. Discover the full story on worldhistory.tv
