From 1942 to 1945, Fritz Sauckel built one of the largest systems of human exploitation in history.
As Hitler’s General Plenipotentiary for Labour Deployment, he orchestrated the deportation of more than 12 million men, women, and children from across occupied Europe — many torn from their homes by force.
Under his orders, millions were transported to the Reich, enslaved in factories, mines, and camps, starved, and worked to death in brutal conditions.
He called it “labour deployment.” The world called it slavery.
At Nuremberg, he was named the “cruellest slave owner since the Egyptian pharaohs.”
In October 1946, Fritz Sauckel met the fate he had once promised others — death by hanging.

00:00Zaukel had overall responsibility for the slave labor program, and he was constantly
00:05in the field supervising the steps which were being taken.
00:09He was aware of the ruthless methods being taken to obtain laborers, and vigorously supported
00:14them on the ground that they were necessary to fill the quotas.
00:18Zaukel's regulations also provided that he had responsibility for transporting the laborers
00:24to Germany, allocating them to employers and taking care of them, and that other agencies
00:29involved in these processes were subordinate to him.
00:32He was informed of the bad conditions which existed, and said,
00:36All the men must be fed, sheltered, and treated in such a way as to exploit them to the highest
00:42possible extent, at the lowest conceivable degree of expenditure.
00:46On one occasion, at a meeting of high party officials, he explained,
00:51If we lose this war, not only will they hang me, but they will also hang you.
00:56This can be taken for granted.
