00:00The Second World War started on the 1st of September 1939, and in July of the following
00:06year, Derlewanger was admitted to the SS. He created and trained a special criminal unit
00:12named the Derlewanger Brigade, which at that time consisted mostly of convicted poachers
00:17serving their sentences in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin. They were
00:22recruited thanks to their tracking and shooting skills in order to fight partisans and receive
00:27two months of training. In the autumn of 1940, the unit consisted of around 80 men. Derlewanger
00:34demanded unconditional obedience, and if there was a breach of discipline, he did not hesitate
00:40to beat them with clubs or shoot them. His men called him a butcher, and one of his punishments
00:46included the so-called Derlewanger Coffin, in which a soldier could be locked up in a narrow box for days.
