00:00In July 1943, Berthe was implicated in the Michnów Massacre, where 204 villagers were
00:06murdered and their homes destroyed as punishment for supporting the Polish resistance.
00:12In November 1944, Berthe was promoted to General Mayor of Police and SS Brigadeführer,
00:19a rank equivalent of Brigadier General in the U.S. Army. However, his command came to an end
00:25when the Red Army liberated Radom on the 16th of January 1945.
00:32Justice finally caught up with Berthe when, after the war, he was arrested by the British
00:36Royal Military Police. He was held in internment camps in Neumünster Gardaland and Neuengammer
00:43before being extradited to Poland in 1947. Tried in Radom for his crimes, he was sentenced
00:50to death on the 18th of June, 1949.
