00:00One of them came through on Monday.
00:01It was a one-year, $10 million deal for Adolis Garcia with the Philadelphia Phillies.
00:08Adolis Garcia, who was non-tendered by the Texas Rangers.
00:12Adolis was, I think, a top 10 corner outfielder in Major League Baseball at the end of the 2023 MLB season.
00:19This guy had, what, 40 homers?
00:21He was flirting with 40 at least, and he was a gold glove candidate in right field.
00:27Adolis Garcia, his 2023 season.
00:30He pretty much put up a five-win season with 39 homers, 107 driven in, and a 128 WRC+.
00:38After that, immediate downhill slope.
00:43He was a negative war player in 154 games in 2024.
00:47He went from one of the better right field defenders in Major League Baseball to one of the worst right field defenders in Major League Baseball.
00:54And this year, he decided to stop walking.
00:57And again, he was worth fewer than one war.
01:01What happened to Adolis Garcia, and why does $10 million make sense for Philly to throw his way?
01:06I don't know if it does.
01:08That's the big question.
01:11If Garcia had not improved defensively significantly this year, he got back to where he, you know, has been in the past.
01:19Like, he was negative 12 outs above average.
01:21And I'll cut him some slack.
01:21You know, he had that knee injury.
01:23I wonder if that had affected him in 24.
01:25And then this past year, he, you know, was one out above average, gave you some value with the arm.
01:30And, you know, so from a percentile standpoint, it's actually puts him in the 72nd percentile, right?
01:36So he gave you a decent defense.
01:38If he hadn't done that, I'd be like, why are you just replacing Nick Castellanos with a little bit sexier of a Nick Castellanos?
01:44And I still think there's some of that to this move here.
01:50And that's where I don't know how to feel about it.
01:53That said, I liked him as a bounce back candidate for a team like the Reds or a team like, you know, some of the Royals.
02:01So if the Phillies really believe he's going to bounce back, it's a good shot to take.
02:06And the difference is Castellanos at this stage, you're hoping that he's just in rhythm as a hitter and doesn't chase 50% of the time and has a hot stretch for you.
02:15Adoli still hits the crap out of the ball.
02:17He still hits the ball as hard as I would say just about the top 10% of the league.
02:22So you're hoping that he can improve the angles, he can improve the swing decisions a little bit.
02:26And the impact is there and the defense is not a gaping hole.
02:30So you can maybe see the 32-year-old here putting it back together.
02:34But at $10 million, man, I don't know.
02:37I'd rather have Lane Thomas at five, as bad as it was for Lane Thomas last year.
02:41It is funny because there are a couple of really good organizations that I think strike gold with somebody and then immediately look for the next guy to do that.
02:52So the Dodgers, a couple of years ago, struck gold with Jason Hayward on a one-year deal.
02:59They brought him back.
03:00He wasn't that good.
03:01But it was a great one-year deal, OPS over 800.
03:04What do they do the next year?
03:06They go bring Teoscar Hernandez in on a one-year deal and they strike gold and they bring him back.
03:12So what do they do the next year?
03:13They bring Michael Conforto in and say, you know what, this is this year's version of Jason Hayward and Teoscar Hernandez.
03:21And Michael Conforto was unplayable.
03:23He wasn't on the World Series roster for the L.A. Dodgers.
03:27I feel like the Phillies are starting to settle into this rhythm.
03:30They love what they saw from Max Kepler in 2024.
03:34Had, or 2025.
03:36Had to love it.
03:37One-year, $10 million deal.
03:38So what do you think Dave Dombrowski did?
03:41Found this year's Max Kepler.
03:43The Dullies.
03:44And they wanted a righty.
