00:00The Cowboys didn't have that like sexy offensive, let's move up and take a player draft.
00:05But Bill, man, they really addressed their issues, I thought, in this draft,
00:09taking three defensive players in their first three picks and two first round picks.
00:14Simply put, Bill, the Cowboys are just tired of getting beat on the defensive side of the ball.
00:19Well, their games were like watching video games last year, like playing Madden,
00:23where everybody scores and they couldn't hold leads and their defense was very poor.
00:28So what do they do? They reach up and draft Caleb Downs.
00:31They get Jayshan Barham. They use five or six of their first picks on that defensive side of the ball.
00:37So I think there is a commitment to get better on that side.
00:41It starts with Downs, a guy that immediately makes your secondary better.
00:44And if some of those other guys come through, maybe they have enough improvement on that side of the ball.
00:50So, yeah, Dallas, definitely a need-based draft. I was impressed with what they did.
00:55All right. So on the flip side, Bill, you did not give a high grade to the Rams.
00:59And they had maybe the surprise of the draft by taking Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick.
01:04We know the social media stuff, Sean McVay that is out there.
01:08I don't know if we should make too much of that or not.
01:11But it definitely feels like Les Snead stepped in and said,
01:14hey, I'm not going into another offseason not knowing if my quarterback has a bad back and can't play.
01:20People forget that. And I think that that's a big part of this.
01:23I don't know if it's right or wrong, Bill, but it was this time last year and May and June
01:28and July.
01:29Bill, we didn't know if Matthew Stafford was going to suit up week one.
01:32So at least this somewhat protects them for the future, I think.
01:36I mean, in the future, we may look back at this and say, why did we overreact?
01:41We might.
01:41But on the surface, you know, taking a quarterback who had a second round value.
01:45I guess the problem I have with the strategy is.
01:48I can make the argument right now that Carson Beck has a better chance to start this year than Ty
01:54Simpson.
01:54And Carson Beck was a third round pick.
01:56And he lands in Arizona where he'll compete with Brissette and Gardner Minshew.
02:01And the Rams are, it reminds me of Green Bay a couple of years ago when they drafted Jordan Love
02:06after coming off an NFC championship game appearance.
02:10Their window's open now.
02:12And I get that Matthew Stafford's 38, but he's coming off an MVP season.
02:15And every transition with quarterbacks, as you know, at least that I can point to countless examples, is awkward.
02:22And that's why we were over-reading into Sean McVay's body language and everything else with the relationship with the
02:27owner.
02:28But the bottom line is that you could take a player at that pick that could help you beat the
02:32Seahawks now, and they didn't do that.
02:34Yeah.
02:34And, you know, the part of it, Bill, too, we don't know what's going on in the building.
02:37We've heard McVay retire a couple different times, too.
02:40I mean, Sneed's got to act a little independently, I think, in this spot.
02:43It sounds like that's what he did.
02:45Jaguars a little perplexing also, Bill.
02:47A couple of tight ends in their second round pick and their fifth round pick as well.
02:52What did you make of the Jaguars draft?
02:54Not very sexy, for sure.
02:56But I give them some benefit of the doubt, knowing that they're coming off the season, that they did.
03:00But I still think this is kind of paying the bill for the Travis Hunter trade that they moved up
03:04with Cleveland.
03:05They get him.
03:06Hunter now just going to play corner next year.
03:08So wasn't entirely impressed with Jacksonville or Houston.
03:12And they were kind of, like, borderline to me.
03:15You know, you could say, well, you know, they've fulfilled needs in their playoff teams.
03:19But I thought both of those teams could have done a little more.
03:22Same with Houston, Bill.
03:23You know, Bill, we went into the draft thinking Houston was going to just draft all offensive players.
03:28Their offense just completely fell flat last year.
03:30And they basically didn't decide to do that.
03:32So I'm not sure what Houston was thinking.
03:34Well, and they joined the tight end run.
03:36A lot of teams did.
03:37Marlon Klein, an early picket tight end of Michigan, kind of a project there.
03:41But the one thing Houston did well, and I love the reaction afterward, is that they did snag Caden McDonald,
03:47the Ohio State defensive tackle, in the second round.
