00:00And how have rising executions and mass arrests in Iran
00:04been used as tools of political repression?
00:07And what impact has this had on dissent and civil society?
00:12Because you did mention back in January,
00:14we did see those anti-government protests.
00:17Well, obviously, for the government, it does not want uprise.
00:22They do not want the demonstrations.
00:25It creates situations for it that they cannot control.
00:28And we saw, we've seen this again twice this year
00:31in the sense of people uprising, demonstrating,
00:36and all the killings, the thousands of people
00:39that are being killed on the streets.
00:41And it doesn't, it makes the government and the Iran look bad
00:46because it's violating human rights
00:48when it does crack down on people demonstrating.
00:52And it's, again, a tactic that it uses to hide what is happening.
00:57It uses executions to scare its own people,
01:01even to a point where the number of executions,
01:05human rights organizations are,
01:09have actually said that, are on the increase.
01:12And now even teenage protesters are being executed.
01:17We have Amir Hossein Hatemi that was executed earlier this month.
01:20And even his body hasn't been returned to his family.
01:24Again, a number of human rights violations happening there.
01:27These trials are on mock trials.
01:29They're not fair trials.
01:30They happen very quickly.
01:32And again, it's all to instill fear
01:34and prevent the dissonance and the uprise
01:37that you were mentioning before.
01:40We have May Sato, the special reporter,
01:43and the UN chief both expressing concern
01:46over the dire human rights situation in Iran.
01:50We have a lot of concern over the dire human rights situation in Iran.
