00:18Hulk Hogan, who some consider to be the biggest wrestling star of all time, has died.
00:24Terry Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, died today after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida.
00:32Hogan's manager tells us that he passed away surrounded by family.
00:39His wild personality, pumped-up physique, and handlebar mustache made in the face of professional wrestling.
00:46His legacy also comes with controversy.
00:49This won't surprise you, but I used to watch him every day after school.
00:52Like a lot of kids, right? Yeah.
00:54But unlike a lot of superheroes, Superman, Batman, you couldn't touch and feel him.
00:58He was tangible to a lot of people.
01:00They're very sad to see their legend, their childhood hero, gone in what seems like such a sudden way.
01:33Oh, that's the hardest part, standing up.
01:37Old people take a long time to get going.
01:40Whew.
01:48When I was the world's champion, I had this crazy gym.
01:52Over the years, we've kind of scaled down to the, to the Geritol equipment here.
02:04I feel okay, but it's a pain in the butt, you know, because I have my son take the top
02:09soft water bottles all the time for me because I can't turn them.
02:12Kind of embarrassing in a little way.
02:16But it's all good, huh?
02:18Ain't that bad.
02:19Could be worse.
02:20I don't know.
02:20It's part of the deal, man.
02:22Yeah.
02:23You know.
02:23Keep you humble.
02:24Keep, keeps me humble, keeps me very grateful.
02:27In my mind, I still think like I'm 35 or 40 years old, but as soon as I look in
02:31the mirror, I go, who the hell's that?
02:34Get down here, it's like the only real piece of my life.
02:41Once I'd get in that ring, I wouldn't worry about kids, lives, bills, problems, legal, criminal, any type of problems.
02:54But I don't have that anymore.
02:56You know, in wrestling, you should be remembered from all the wars you've been and everything you've done.
03:05And a lot of that's been taken away in the last 20 years.
03:09Was there a sinister side to his success?
03:12Today, the WWE announced they were dropping Hogan.
03:15Hulk Hogan fired by the WWE, the company.
03:18I think he's a liar.
03:19I think he's a coward.
03:21There's certainly some things that you would want to be remembered for more than others, right?
03:29Yeah.
03:32Of course.
03:39I think people don't know the truth.
03:42Who was this guy, really?
03:43Let's see, is Hulk in the building?
03:45Aw, that's what I am there to.
03:48Yeah, yeah.
03:49I actually believe in what I'm doing.
03:51And the people get behind that, man.
03:52They get behind me, they know that I train, say my prayers, eat my vitamins.
03:55If you say your prayers and eat your vitamins, man, sooner or later you're going to get what you want.
03:59This is serious.
04:08Beach Boy Blonde, his body of bronze, standing six foot nine and weighing 345.
04:14His name is Hulk Hogan.
04:16And when you were born, they didn't say, this looks like a baby Hulk.
04:20We'll name him Hulk Hogan.
04:22No, but I grew into the name, that's for sure.
04:24Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you?
04:32Today, he is the biggest name in wrestling.
04:37One of the most famous athletes in the history of the world.
04:44Man, it feels great to be on top of the mountain.
04:47It feels like I got about a million volts of electricity running through these 24 and 5 months.
04:52Hulk to rule, brother.
04:54A man who calls himself the ultimate male.
04:57The ultimate all-American.
04:59Here in America, you gotta work hard, love hard, and die hard, man.
05:12I can't predict and tell you right now what the final act of the story's gonna be.
05:29I'm not looking for a legacy pat on the back for sure.
05:34Not everyone's gonna love you.
05:39Some people hate me, but...
05:44I'm definitely the greatest wrestler of all time.
05:46I'm Hulk Hogan!
05:47Mr. Hulk Hogan!
05:50Here he is!
05:51Hulk Hogan!
05:53He is the man who needs no introduction.
05:55Would you welcome Hulk Hogan?
05:59I'm Hulk Hogan.
06:10Let's see if I can get through another day and listen to myself talk.
06:14Good grief.
06:16Moments away.
06:17Makeup and hair, please.
06:18I'm here.
06:20I can do this.
06:22A couple frizzies here, Hulk.
06:24Thank you, dear.
06:27Fans recognize Hulk Hogan as a hero.
06:30He's bigger than life.
06:31A real hero who gives his all for all the right reasons.
06:35Do you consider yourself a hero?
06:38Do you consider yourself a hero?
06:38I don't consider myself a hero at all.
06:41But I'm very aware now after all these years what that Hulk Hogan presence means.
06:49You know, to the fans.
06:52I was not a mere moral man.
06:54I was a superhero Hulk Hogan when I had my stature.
06:58The Hulk Hogan character is over the top.
07:01It's a fake character, you know, which hopefully people can understand that someday.
07:06Man, I say my prayers, take my vitamins, and everything I do is positive.
07:10But yeah, it's two different people.
07:11You know, it's like me playing Dracula.
07:14You know, I don't come home and bite my wife in the neck and suck the blood out of my
07:17kids' necks.
07:18You know, but duh, if you want to believe that, go ahead.
07:21When I come in the house, the headband comes off, the bald head's there.
07:25And my wife calls me Terry.
07:28Terry!
07:29Why do you always have to do that?
07:31Terry's not going to leave this part out.
07:32We're going to take some movies with Terry and you're going to make a video.
07:36There were only a handful of people that knew him as Terry.
07:39I knew him deeply as himself.
07:41Oh my God, look at this. We were always tan.
07:43I turned Terry on to a tanning bed.
07:46He didn't even know what they were, and he had to stay tan for work.
07:49Oh, Terry's naked.
07:50You've done it all.
07:53You've broken every code.
07:57The fans just liked believing that Hulk was like Superman.
08:06I know him.
08:08Like, I mean, when you're with somebody that long, to be thick and thin, good and bad, tired, happy, sad,
08:14you know.
08:14You learn that person very well.
08:19And I was always the one with the camera.
08:22This is the greatest wall, because the greatest person is on this wall.
08:27When I met Terry and I asked him, hey, do you have family?
08:30And he laid out his situation.
08:32When I was to show these people, the refrigerator that took me from a mere 196 pounds when I was
08:3912 years old, to a walloping 305-pound Hulk Hogan.
08:43I grew up in Florida, South Tampa.
08:47We were broke, and I hated it.
08:50You know, especially, you know, watching how my dad slaved in the sun as a construction worker.
08:59As a kid, I made a decision that financially I would never live like that.
09:05So we got Pete Bollea.
09:07My dad was that old, hard-school Italian, you know.
09:11And he was a little rough on me, that's for sure.
09:13They weren't the type of parents that would tell you they love you.
09:16You know, that would never happen.
09:18Terry was a mistake-type child.
09:21They had Alan, and then eight years later, had Terry.
09:25My older brother, Alan, he was the tough guy.
09:28Alan was my dad's favorite.
09:30He was always talking about how strong he was, and he would just tell me.
09:34You know, you're not like your brother, you know.
09:37I didn't understand that.
09:38I always had a big chip on my shoulder.
09:41But, you know, I hated confrontations.
09:45He wasn't the loudmouth you see on TV.
09:47He was very soft-spoken, shy.
09:50No, I wasn't always this confident.
09:52When did that, when did that change?
09:56Well, on the weekends, Florida Championship Wrestling would come on the TV back then.
10:01I've never seen anything like that.
10:11I had no idea that this existed.
10:13I was probably eight or nine years old when I first went in person.
10:18They had these great characters.
10:20The conflict between good and bad.
10:23How into it the fans were that were loyal, dedicated fans.
10:26I love it! I love it!
10:28It was this love and energy that they were all getting there.
10:32I could feel it, man.
10:34And the one guy that really hooked me was the American Dream, Dusty Rose.
10:37Fully, a lot of the people of the American Dream.
10:40This whole rap.
10:41Real descent.
10:43The Razzmatazz!
10:44My new Flandango boss hole!
10:46I'm so quick!
10:47I'm so fast!
10:48Jerry Falk is nothing but a car!
10:50The energy would just drag you up out of any hole.
10:53I went there all through childhood.
10:57I was first.
11:02That's what I wanted to do.
11:06I wanted to be a wrestler.
11:11The problem was, I was scared to death of those guys.
11:15Most of them were 300 pounds and over, and they had teeth knocked out, broken noses and cauliflower ears.
11:20And it scared the bejesus out of me.
11:22I believe professional wrestling was completely real.
11:27I knew I couldn't do it.
11:30I was real fat.
11:32Didn't take my shirt off ever when I went to the beach because I needed a bra.
11:36Pretty much, I was living off, you know, Burger King and Snickers bars.
11:43Played little league baseball.
11:45But they could throw me out a second.
11:47I was so fat and slow.
11:50So I got into bowling.
11:53But then, my life changed when I realized I could make money playing music.
12:01Terry was a talented bass player.
12:04He would have been Guns N' Roses like he's that level.
12:09I learned that I liked being in front of the crowd and being on stage.
12:14But my dad was upset that I had quit school and was running around in a rock and roll band
12:20and lifting weights like an idiot.
12:24It led to me, you know, having a big blowout with my parents and getting kicked out of the house.
12:32So, a few years after high school, we had a little following in North Tampa.
12:36Then all of a sudden, these wrestlers are coming in the bar.
12:40Oh, my gosh, I'm on stage and here's these guys.
12:42I'm scared to death of guys like superstar Billy Graham.
12:46You know what a fist sandwich is?
12:48I'm Brian Blair.
12:49My first memory of meeting Terry was when he was playing bass guitar and he would stand out so much.
12:56He was in these platform heels and had jewelry on and long, long hair, suntan, big muscles.
13:02I mean, he was the show.
13:04The music was good, but he was like the show.
13:07One of the things that shocked me more than anything was they weren't mean to me.
13:10Huh.
13:12I didn't realize they were grooming me.
13:17And they took me to all the matches.
13:20It's like I'm getting free.
13:25And then one of the biggest nights of my life changed everything.
13:32We saw Steve Kearns at Fort Homer Hesterly Armory.
13:36The bad guy was just waylaying his ass.
13:40And the referee told him to knock it off.
13:44Let go of me, ref.
13:45And I remember he looked right down at Steve Kearn.
13:49I read his lips.
13:51He said, hit me, hit me.
13:53I went, what?
13:55And Steve hit him.
13:56He goes, again, again.
13:58And he made this comeback from underneath.
14:00I was like, what?
14:02I just didn't believe it.
14:04I was disillusioned for about two seconds and I got over it.
14:08All of a sudden, the door opens.
14:10And I knew I didn't have to be a tough guy to get into the business.
14:18They don't want to tell you that it's not real.
14:22They want you to believe that it is.
14:25But people don't realize what your body goes through.
14:30You get your butt kicked in professional wrestling.
14:45You got your butt kicked in professional wrestling wrestling wrestling wrestling wrestlingтерес
14:49Terry and I learned to wrestle.
14:51It was called The Dungeon.
14:55I had made the decision to go for it.
14:59And I just believed that I knew exactly what I had to do
15:03to run with the pack.
15:05It was brutal, brutal.
15:08What you had to go through to get into the business.
15:11The newer guys, they have no clue.
15:13They have no clue.
15:15I spent a year in the gym training twice a day,
15:17laying in the sun all day long.
15:20And like a fool, I told everybody,
15:23I was gonna be a wrestler.
15:24I'm gonna be a wrestler.
15:25That's the wrong thing to do.
15:27One of the teachers put his forearm in my shin
15:30and grabbed my toe, snapped.
15:33And they broke his leg, literally broke it.
15:39I was living in a hotel room at the time.
15:43And I still tried to come home whenever I could,
15:45but I wasn't welcome there, you know.
15:47That makes that guy so big die.
15:49When my dad would go to work,
15:50I'd run back to the house.
15:52Sweetheart.
15:53My mom would cook for me and take care of me,
15:55and then I could like sleep in his bed,
15:57and, oh, you gotta get out of here,
15:58and your dad's coming home, so I'll take off.
16:01You know, my leg getting broke was minuscule
16:05compared to what he put me through,
16:06so I had to go back.
16:10There was no quitting from me.
16:14As soon as I got better, I started showing up down there.
16:19That made Terry want to try even harder,
16:22like, you're not gonna keep me down.
16:25He just was like a time exe.
16:27He took the licking and kept on ticking.
16:31That's Terry.
16:32That's a Hulkster.
16:33That's him.
16:39Terry's first match was against me.
16:41He came out with a mask on as the Super Destroyer,
16:46and he looked dorky.
16:48Super Destroyer.
16:53Terry Bollea did not complete his training
16:55and immediately become Hulk Hogan.
16:58I mean, you have to pay your dues,
16:59and you have to develop your persona.
17:03I'm a professional wrestling historian and author,
17:07and despite my youthful appearance,
17:09I've been covering the sport of kings
17:11for more than 40 years.
17:15Terry Bollea's youth and his size
17:18made you take notice.
17:20He had genetic gifts.
17:23And the Super Destroyer was masked,
17:25and I believe that was deliberate.
17:26I was getting beat everywhere,
17:28but they didn't want people to see me getting beat.
17:30I had to learn how to work in the ring.
17:32This is someone who had the potential
17:35to be a notable, but he wasn't there yet.
17:39He was very green.
17:40Put the guy under a mask,
17:42let him make his mistakes.
17:44Later on, we can make him into a real character.
17:56Oh, my God.
17:57Wrestling was very territorial back then.
18:01Like the American mob,
18:04professional wrestling promoters formed an organization
18:07that would divide North America into territories.
18:12You know, you're supposed to stay six or seven months
18:14in each place and get your bags and move.
18:17It's driving like 25, 26 hundred miles a week.
18:26I was finally, you know, trading a real life for a wrestling life.
18:31Rock and roll.
18:33Yes, sir, buddy.
18:35So I went up to Memphis.
18:38Forgot my six-string razor.
18:40Forgot my six-string razor.
18:40And I took off the mask.
18:42Hit the sky.
18:43And changed my name to be Terry Boulder.
18:46I went to Memphis before I realized.
18:51Well, I rang the information.
18:55I'm going to have to buy a ticket to see my face, brother.
18:58Coming in the ring, full head of blonde hair.
19:00The largest arms in the world, the largest back in the world.
19:03He's rock solid like a boulder.
19:05So it's a good name.
19:07That's Terry Boulder, 295 pounds.
19:10From Tampa.
19:11Oh, slam by a boulder.
19:14Oh, my goodness.
19:14Well, this is Monday night in Memphis, Daddy.
19:17When I get a hold of you, I'm going to take you
19:18and bury your head right in the mat, brother.
19:21I'm going to teach you a little bit of a wrestling lesson,
19:22a little respect to these good people around here.
19:25And I'm going to put the super southern squeeze on you, Daddy.
19:27I'm Terry Boulder, and when I get this super southern squeeze
19:30on you, there's going to be lights out for you
19:32and whoever's around.
19:33And I was talking like that.
19:35I mean, seriously.
19:38Hulk Hogan didn't exist yet.
19:43The first time I saw Hulk, I really
19:45wasn't in the wrestling business.
19:47That happened years later.
19:49Come on in.
19:52Can you believe a WWE Hall of Famer sitting out here
19:55waiting all day for you guys to get here?
19:57That's too much.
19:58Too much.
19:58Here is the mouth of the south, Jimmy Hart.
20:01Come on, show him what it's all about, baby.
20:03Show him what it's all about.
20:05That's the maniac.
20:06Can you believe this?
20:07Jimmy Hart, manager of Hulk Hogan.
20:11To the fans, I was Hulk's manager.
20:14Wrestling manager.
20:15Not real, real, real, real manager.
20:17For God's sakes, you've been wearing that outfit since 1983.
20:20And you know what?
20:20I'll always wear it.
20:21I'm done with you.
20:22I'm done with you.
20:22Done with me?
20:23Let's talk to Hulk Hogan.
20:23Oh, my God!
20:25Oh, my God!
20:26You know what I'm talking about, Jimmy Hart?
20:28You know what I'm talking about?
20:30Come get some of it!
20:30If it wasn't for two people in my life, Jerry Lawler and Hulk Hogan, there'd be no Jimmy Hart.
20:36Trust me on that, and I really mean that.
20:39I went to high school with Jerry the King Lawler back in Memphis.
20:42To the wrestling fans, there was nobody bigger than Jerry the King Lawler.
20:47Jerry the King Lawler!
20:50I remember one night, I went by the Coliseum to see the wrestling.
20:54Jerry Lawler goes, Jimmy, come here, come here.
20:56I said, what is it?
20:57He goes, you see that guy in the ring?
20:58I went, yeah.
20:59What do you think?
20:59I went, wow, man, unbelievable.
21:01What do they call him?
21:02He said, Terry Boulder.
21:04And I went, God, he looks great.
21:06He goes, you know, he asked me to manage him.
21:09I said, you're going to do it, King?
21:10He said, are you kidding me?
21:11This guy will never make a dime in this business.
21:14He was not very good.
21:16I'll be honest with you.
21:19Hogan was very big, of course.
21:21Everybody knew that.
21:23But not on the same level as other wrestlers.
21:26He was just kind of getting his feet wet.
21:29He started making $800 a week.
21:32You needed to make at least $1,000 to buy food and gas
21:35and pay for hotel rooms back then.
21:39The Hulk learned a lot from Lawler.
21:41One thing I told him, you need to take a punch.
21:44You don't need to take a bump.
21:46You just stand there and overcome that with your size and your strength.
21:57He was super green.
22:00I wrestled him in Atlanta quite a few times in that period.
22:08And the match was always about 30 seconds long.
22:12Maybe you people out there don't realize what you're looking at, Daddy.
22:16But you got six foot seven right here, a mountain of a man.
22:19I knew more about wrestling then than he ever knew in his whole life.
22:22Anybody out there who wants to step in the ring had $1,000 up.
22:26For anybody who can break the golden squeeze.
22:28All it was was a bear hug.
22:29That's all we could do.
22:36Look at that, look at that.
22:38Can you believe that?
22:39Now with Bernard in the air like a piece of meat.
22:42And a bear hug.
22:43I suspect we'll hear the submission.
22:45Yes, sir.
22:47That's all we needed to do.
22:48It was believable enough.
22:49It was always a sight to see a guy like that just squeeze the daylights out
22:53and throw you down on the mat and walk around.
22:57He was unbeatable.
22:59He was just so big.
23:01He really didn't look like a human being.
23:04He looked like somebody who did step out of a comic book.
23:10At that point, all the promoters, they said,
23:14Oh, I think you're bigger than the Hulk.
23:15A big muscular monster.
23:17So that's a good name.
23:20And that's where Terry the Hulk boulder started.
23:23Oh, there's that big leg.
23:25Huge man.
23:27First thing I did was I did a video standing on Jerry Jarrett's kitchen room table.
23:34When they see this guy, they won't forget that Terry Boulder is the Hulk.
23:37Let's take a look at it right now.
23:39This man is not a television illusion.
23:43He is not an artist's conception.
23:48He is not a figment of the imagination.
23:54He is real.
23:57He is the Hulk.
24:02That made him into a superhero.
24:05It really did.
24:07He is the Hulk.
24:09It was terrible.
24:11Not a lot was expected from Hulk Hogan in terms of character.
24:17He was intriguing and they wanted to see more of him.
24:21And here comes Terry the Hulk one.
24:23They just show up and they put in the main event everywhere we go.
24:26The character didn't really have a persona other than he was big and nasty and mean.
24:35We have a confrontation now but we could have some problems right here and now.
24:39Everybody's been running scared.
24:41They've been feeding me this grade B meat.
24:43Every week on TV.
24:44I want the best now.
24:46All these superstars, they've been hiding in the eye of the storm brother.
24:50I've been whipping everybody out here.
24:52As I was becoming more popular, all the promoters, they said,
24:56with your look and as big as you are, you need to be in New York.
25:02Madison Square Garden is the epitome of wrestling.
25:07And there was a guy named Vince McMahon Sr. who called.
25:12And he wants you to come to New York.
25:17So I went up there.
25:19And Vince McMahon is clicking quarters, looking at me.
25:22I want you to come to work for me.
25:25Work nothing but main events.
25:27And draw money all over the world.
25:29I said, oh, really?
25:30First off, I would change the name.
25:34It is the Incredible Hulk Hogan!
25:40And I said, what is a Hulk Hogan?
25:43What does that mean?
25:45Back in the day, my dad gave him his name.
25:47He was this big kid.
25:48And my dad, of course, being Irish, decided Hogan.
25:50And that's a great name.
25:51So why not Hulk Hogan?
25:53It was alliterative.
25:54So let's go with that.
25:56But I'm Italian.
25:59Vincent doesn't matter to me.
26:01Yeah, okay.
26:02I'll think about it.
26:05His opponent makes his Madison Square Garden debut, the incredible Hulk Hogan!
26:14The very first match that Hulk Hogan ever had at Madison Square Garden was with yours truly, Ted DiBiase.
26:22Here is the million-dollar man, Ted DiBiase!
26:33Ted DiBiase!
26:35When Hulk and I had that match, Vince McMahon Sr. came to me and he said, we have really high
26:43hopes for this guy.
26:45I really want you to get him over as best you can.
26:48Putting someone over means he's going to win.
26:51And I said, you got it, boss.
26:54Oh, he was brand new.
26:55He was obviously just still learning.
26:58But my job was to make him look really good.
27:02When we first locked up, you know, he powers out.
27:05Oh, good!
27:06Breaks the full Nelson.
27:07And Hogan is playing the strength for which he is loaded.
27:10I back up into the corner like, oh my gosh.
27:13You know, I'm trying to convey to the people that, you know, what do I have to do to get
27:19this guy down?
27:21DiBiase tries it again!
27:23For this to be the forefront of the wrestling business, the main event in Madison Square Garden, the beginning of
27:30a whole new era,
27:32I thought I had arrived.
27:51He was a heel.
27:52He beats me and I was the good guy and they booted him.
27:56They booted him out of the building.
28:00Victorious in his very first appearance here in Madison Square Garden.
28:03And, uh, I started running my mouth.
28:06Everybody is looking for an idol.
28:09From now on, I wish to be referred to and I demand to be referred to as the superhero Hulk
28:16Hogan.
28:16I knew how to be a bad guy and I was really good at it.
28:20We're now gonna talk to Hulk Hogan.
28:23These people wanna know what Hulk Hogan's all about.
28:27I start out every day by looking in the mirror to say good morning, Mr. Hulk Hogan.
28:32I'm happy to see you again.
28:33I would rather see myself in the morning than somebody ugly like you.
28:38You don't like to brag very much, do you?
28:41Not a bit, not at all.
28:42Magazine offers, television appearances, they're all coming in now.
28:47I am the new superhero.
28:50And then, uh, one day they brought me this note, please call Sylvester Stallone.
28:56About, uh, a cameo role in a Rocky movie.
29:02I'll be darned.
29:04Who's the fellow that you, uh, you do this with?
29:06His name is Hulk Hogan.
29:07He is, uh, a fellow that I saw one night on television.
29:10I was laying, had insomnia and he came on and he beat up four wrestlers at the same time.
29:15And he was a giant, about seven feet tall, about 350 pounds.
29:18But then I told Mr. McMahon I was leaving Fall River that night to fly to L.A. to film
29:23the movie.
29:23He goes, no, you're not.
29:25You need to drive all night long because I had to be on Charlotte TV at noon.
29:29And I said, no, Mr. McMahon, I told you I was gonna go do the Rocky movie.
29:32I said, he goes, if you do the movie, you're fired.
29:35And I had a great rapport with him.
29:37And we'd talk all the time.
29:39It was like a father-son thing.
29:40You know, he'd talk me down off the ledge.
29:42But I just knew I had to do it.
29:46So he said, you'll never work here again.
29:47And I went, okay, cool, cool.
29:52Are you really gonna fight that wrestler?
29:54They're so big.
29:55That's all right, it'll be fun.
29:56Tonight we have a most unlikely match for you.
29:58The boxer against the wrestler.
30:00I remember seeing Rocky III in the movie theater twice in the same week.
30:05I felt it was a slap in the face to everybody who made fun of me for being a wrestling
30:12fan.
30:14Now they knew what they were missing.
30:17They could see it right there on the big screen.
30:19Here we go, baby!
30:21The general public all of a sudden went, oh, my God, is that what a professional wrestler looks like?
30:28Is that what professional wrestling is?
30:30That's a large person.
30:31That's a large person.
30:32And he eats five-foot-ten Italian.
30:37We ought to get that guy on the show.
30:41I'd already shot the Stallone movie.
30:44Maybe I was out there to do a Johnny Carson show or something.
30:47Would you welcome Hulk Hogan?
30:49Looking at the size of your arms, I don't believe this.
30:53I wish I had anything that big.
30:58How about your bank account?
31:00Bank of...no.
31:01And me and my buddy went to the Red Onion.
31:06The very first time I saw him, it was in the valley.
31:08At the Red Onion, Rocky III had just come out.
31:12And Terry was playing the part of Thunderless, right?
31:15And all of a sudden, there was a Thunderlips baby in the flesh coming into my bar.
31:20And I'm looking, I'm thinking, this can't even be happening.
31:23I just saw the movie last night.
31:25Thunderlips is here.
31:27In the flesh, baby.
31:29The ultimate male.
31:32There's this little posse of chicks all around him, right?
31:35All these girls all around him.
31:37Like, they're touching muscles and shit.
31:38He just kind of stood there and just sort of, like, you know, flexed and stuff.
31:42And I was like, all right, that's cool.
31:44I like that.
31:45Oh, my God.
31:46It was very intriguing to be around somebody like that.
31:49All of a sudden, Linda came walking.
31:51It was like, everything stopped because everybody in the bar watched her.
31:56You know, it was like every single person in the bar watched her walk across the room.
32:02It's like, oh, my God, that girl's gorgeous.
32:05And I said, holy smokes.
32:07And the second that my foot hit the dance floor, I felt this arm come on me.
32:13And it was as big as my thigh.
32:15Do you want to dance?
32:16Hey, aren't you that guy in the rock you miss?
32:18Yeah, I am.
32:19She goes, oh, yeah, you're Mr. T.
32:20I went, no, I'm not Mr. T.
32:24He's like, it's Hulk Hogan.
32:25I was like, Hulk Hogan?
32:26I thought his name was Hulk Hogan.
32:28I was like, who would call themselves Hulk Hogan?
32:30I thought, he's an actor.
32:32And then he told me he was a wrestler.
32:35And I said, what is that?
32:37And he's like, well, you have to experience to comprehend it.
32:40That was what his answer was to me.
32:41I was like, all right, well, we'll see where that goes.
32:44After that, he goes, let's go back to the apartment where I'm staying.
32:48So we go up, and it's this rickety-ass old apartment.
32:52He brings me a beer.
32:53He's like, I'll be right back.
32:54He goes in the bathroom, right?
32:56I'm waiting the longest time.
32:59All of a sudden, he comes out, he's completely naked.
33:02I'm like, all right, well, say what you want without saying what you want.
33:05It was like, it was like when you go to the zoo and you see, like, a Mammy Willis,
33:09or whatever they're called, a Wooly Mouth.
33:11He was huge.
33:12We drank a couple bottles of wine and just hit it off great.
33:16And how many people can say they got fucked by a giant?
33:20And we're together ever since.
33:22Love brought me such a magical thing.
33:26Hulk, just exactly, how do you lock up?
33:30I'm training in the bedroom.
33:31Goosebumps from head to toe.
33:32He was such a force of energy and excitement and a new wave of life.
33:39I, like, sort of got addicted quickly.
33:43All-star wrestling action continues in one fall match.
33:46The incredible Hulk Hogan.
33:48When wrestling was just territorial, two of the big places that everybody wanted to go was New York,
33:54where I just went fired at.
33:58The other place where everybody wanted to go was Minnesota.
34:03Ladies and gentlemen, from here on the Quint City, Minnesota.
34:07So I sent some 8x10 pictures from Rocky III to a promoter named Vern Gagne in Minnesota.
34:13I got a message back, how soon can you get here?
34:17What a welcome.
34:18The red carpet out for you, the incredible Hulk Hogan.
34:22When I went to Minnesota, I came in as a bad guy, as a heel.
34:27If you'd like to face them and give our television audience an opportunity of seeing you firsthand.
34:32I'll look any way I want.
34:33They had a real popular wrestler named Jesse Ventura.
34:36And so the whole thing was they wanted me to come in and beat Jesse up.
34:40I'm Jesse Ventura, known in the world of wrestling as Jesse the Body Ventura.
34:46He is Jesse the Body Ventura!
34:50Jesse the Body Ventura, flamboyant, gregarious, outspoken.
34:55Well, let me tell you something, Chump Hogan.
34:57You are not ready for me.
34:59I'm pumped up, I'm excited.
35:01You're bleeding, man.
35:02I ain't got time to bleed.
35:04And also ended up a mayor and a governor.
35:07Governor Ventura has a new career.
35:09You know, I've learned in the world of pro wrestling, you never say never.
35:13The Rocky movie came out and he started getting bigger, bigger, bigger.
35:18The Incredible Hulk taunting Jesse the Body Ventura.
35:24They brought Hogan in as a villain.
35:27The Incredible Hulk, Jesse the Body, lets the Hulk have one.
35:30Jesse looking over the crowd.
35:32The people really, in a way, turned Hulk.
35:41The reception was something that no one had seen.
35:44Nobody had ever seen it.
35:45The crowd all for the one, and only Hulk Hogan.
35:49It was a great moment, because the fans were writing the plots.
35:54There's nothing else like it.
35:56That's why I fell in love with the art form.
35:57The people wanted to cheer him.
36:00People wanted a hero.
36:01The audience is to throw that vibe out.
36:04They'll tell you when to be evil and aggressive.
36:06Arm twist.
36:09They'll tell you when to get even.
36:12And now, some of his own medicine.
36:15They'll tell you when to turn it up.
36:17You won't see what's happening.
36:19The Hulk is coming alive.
36:21And so is the crowd.
36:22And they'll tell you when to turn a good guy.
36:46I became the good guy.
36:51He gets thousands and thousands of fans for saying, hey, you're the one.
36:55This is the happiest day in all my life.
36:57Once I was a sinner, and now I'm a saint.
37:00And the reason is because of Dusty Rhodes.
37:01Dusty Rhodes, the American dream.
37:03Dreams that you saved up for a lifetime,
37:06and there's things that you couldn't reach out and get.
37:10The dream taught me what it was all about.
37:12He taught me about loving, living, fighting, and getting down to war.
37:15About 10 years ago, I left Tampa, Florida, my hometown,
37:19with a big chip on my shoulder.
37:21I took on all the top contenders, daddy.
37:24And then the day of reckoning came.
37:26The only way to really grow in the professional wrestling business
37:30is to make yourself bigger.
37:34Not just physically bigger, but bigger as a personality.
37:38And that's what he did.
37:39Man, oh, man.
37:40What time is it, little dude?
37:41What time do you have right there, man?
37:43Eight o'clock.
37:43I feel like I've been awake for 40 days and 40 nights, man.
37:48And the reason why is...
37:48Like, he got it, you know?
37:50And it was crazy, because I remember listening to him
37:53kind of cut through a promo.
37:54Where does this redneck get off at?
37:56Where does he get off at?
37:57He'd start getting creepy and weird shit, you know?
37:59And I'm like...
38:00And for one moment, I felt a power like I've never felt before.
38:04A lightning bolt hit me.
38:06Had a great promo on a scale of 1 to 10.
38:08Hulk Hogan was a 10.
38:09If your Richter scale spins around three and four times,
38:13it's not an earthquake.
38:14It's just me pressing that big Elijah over my head in the sun dome.
38:18Hulk Hogan would talk for 59 seconds exactly,
38:21and I was like, cut, that's a take.
38:23I don't like to overthink things.
38:25There's nothing to think about either.
38:27You either can dance and play the guitar and play the fiddle,
38:29or you can't.
38:31And at the age of 30,
38:33Hulk Hogan is one of the most colorful good guys in the game.
38:35I figured my entrance out.
38:37I had the music.
38:38I had it really, really rocking,
38:40if you watch any of the old Minnesota tapes.
38:42But I didn't have the most important thing.
38:46I needed a gimmick.
38:48He was a super smart guy.
38:50He could figure out the big picture more than other people could.
38:54His wheels are turning,
38:56and the character was never not on his mind.
38:59Whether it's a big guy, fat guy, hairy guy, bodybuilder, shape, whatever,
39:03a great gimmick needs to transcend the wrestler.
39:07And patriotism back then meant everything.
39:09USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
39:16It wasn't in the politics at the time,
39:19but we're in a situation where our country was starting to make a comeback.
39:24It is time for us to realize that we're too great a nation
39:28to limit ourselves to small dreams.
39:31Those who say that we're in a time when there are no heroes,
39:36they just don't know where to look.
39:38And the fans were so, like, USA, all that USA and stuff.
39:43Of course, he comes out with a flag.
39:46You know, it was just so pro-America
39:49that he couldn't even make a mistake, honestly.
39:59So it was all timing and being there with the sun, moon, the stars,
40:03everything in the line and doing everything at the right moment.
40:06The American reality.
40:07I'll tell you what it's all about.
40:09It's believing in yourself.
40:10I say my prayers. I eat my vitamins every day.
40:12And the life I live isn't a lie.
40:14It's what I believe in, man.
40:15And people can get off on that because I'm for real.
40:18When they look at me, they say the man's not a phony.
40:20When I bench press 550 pounds before your eyes will do, you say that's real.
40:24Everything I do is for real, and I never tell a lie.
40:26The Incredible Hulk Hogan.
40:28He hears them.
40:29Oh, does he hear them?
40:30Oh, the crowd loves this man.
40:33Hulk Hogan is here, and everything is right with the wrestling world.
40:36And Gary goes over.
40:39And to Hulk.
40:41The Incredible Hulk.
40:49I was becoming a huge force in the wrestling business.
40:55It just so happened during that time, this kid came through the curtain.
41:00He gave me a card.
41:01He says, call Vince.
41:01I said, I'm not calling.
41:02Vince, he fired me.
41:03He goes, no, Vince Jr., call Vince Jr.
41:06He's getting ready to take over for his dad in New York.
41:08This week, we're honored to have with us the voice of professional wrestling, Vince McMahon.
41:13And Vince Jr. said, look, you know, I see what you're doing with this Hulk Hogan character.
41:18Hulk Hogan, I would say that there has never before ever been any individual in the history of professional wrestling
41:26that brings a crowd to their feet with that enormous electricity.
41:32The masses and the general public still didn't know anything about wrestling.
41:37It wasn't mainstream yet.
41:38And, you know, he said, look, I've got this idea to make you the biggest star, you know, that this
41:44wrestling business has ever had.
41:46Our main event.
41:55But all of a sudden, I started going, okay, you know, this whole thing's starting to work.
42:06Hulk Hogan!
42:08How was your ego at the time?
42:12Um...
42:12Anybody out there who doesn't know about Hulk Hogan, slap yourself in the side of the head.
42:18Look into the camera.
42:19There's a man talking to you.
42:23Yeah.
42:23To be completely honest with you, it was way, way, way, way bigger than it should have been.
42:29Hulkamania.
42:31Superman.
42:32I just didn't realize the responsibility that came along with it.
42:36Yeah, let's party out!
42:39It is a nightmare.
42:51The Hulkster's in the house.
42:55Check him out, check him out.
42:59Get up off your seat.
43:03He's got a brand new beat.
43:05When the going gets tough, the tough get rough.
43:10Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:14Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:38Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:43Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:44Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:45Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:46Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:47Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:48Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
43:48Hey, hey, ho, ho, come on, let's go.
44:57We're right back.
