00:00On April 14th, Alison Stewart says she began getting abdominal pains and went to the San Fernando General Hospital.
00:07Stewart, who is in the early stages of her sixth pregnancy, tells us she was treated for gallstones and was
00:14administered Panadol and gravel intravenously.
00:17When the nurse was administering the medication, she put, she pushed, she put just pushing the gravel just in one
00:26push so it started to burn.
00:28And I told her it was burning, but she egged no man.
00:32The woman claimed she repeated herself and was told that a burning sensation was normal for gravel and that it
00:37would eventually subside.
00:39But that didn't happen and the pain intensified within minutes.
00:43After her husband called the nurse back in to see his wife, the IV was switched off.
00:48That's when I get, my hand got burned.
00:52According to Stewart, she was sent to the gynecology ward to be warded.
00:56And there she asked doctors to examine her hand.
00:59And what happened after that?
01:01They didn't take a look at it.
01:03They did ultrasound and stuff to make sure everything was good.
01:09And then that everything was good with baby or with your baby.
01:13And that same day, about 10, so they discharged me.
01:18But her condition worsened and Stewart says she went back to the hospital the same night.
01:23Due to her low classification of risk in triage, she waited for hours and left and returned again.
01:30It was now April 16th.
01:32And we went through the process and I did see a doctor.
01:36And that's when he explained to me that how the nurse pushed in, like with that force, it damaged the
01:43vein.
01:44The doctor recommended that she see three doctors, a plastic surgeon, a general surgeon, and a vascular doctor.
01:51While she was able to see the first two, the latter is pending.
01:55Stewart also visited a private doctor who did an ultrasound on the affected left hand.
02:00He concluded blockage to the left cephalic vein from her wrist to the region of her elbow with surrounding inflammation,
02:07indicative of superficial thrombophlebitis.
02:10Simply put, a blood clot formed in the superficial vein located just under the skin.
02:16According to a medical expert TV6 News reached out to,
02:20it is a moderate condition which can become serious if not treated.
02:24The clot can travel and enter the deep vein system leading to pulmonary embolism,
02:28which is when one of the arteries to the lungs becomes blocked by a clot.
02:33This time, the mother of five is riddled with anxiety.
02:38I am worried and it is a lot.
02:42There's a lot to deal with.
02:43I have a lot of pain.
02:47And look, last night, my husband couldn't sleep.
02:50I couldn't sleep because of the pain.
02:52Her daily life has also become frustrating,
02:54as she's unable to do many things for herself,
02:57including prepare meals, put her clothes on,
03:00and fully operate her daycare center, which is the source of her income.
03:04What are you hoping for at this particular point in time?
03:07What would you like to see done based on, you know, what you said happened and so on?
03:14I would like to see a vascular doctor, as I should,
03:21to make sure everything is good with the arm.
03:25And to be honest, the need to look into the health care system, the service especially.
03:33Stewart is also calling for answers and accountability for what occurred.
