00:00 It's the first hospital in this country to receive baby-friendly accreditation, and
00:05 Health Minister Terence de Alsing says it's a testament to the excellence in women's
00:11 healthcare.
00:12 How many women are walking around alive today not knowing they are alive because of our
00:18 initiatives, because of your work?
00:21 They will never know.
00:23 They will never have that opportunity to thank you.
00:26 Now, between eight and ten women are alive today every year.
00:33 A hundred children are alive today every year since 2015 because of these initiatives.
00:40 De Alsing notes the ministry has rolled out several key policies to this end, including
00:45 the National Breastfeeding Policy and the National Gestational Diabetes Project.
00:51 Before all of these interventions, the rate of early initiation of breastfeeding at our
00:58 public hospitals was a paltry, unsatisfactory 10%.
01:04 Do you know what it is now?
01:07 90 or 95%?
01:09 95%.
01:12 The minister says he looks forward to the other RHEs also becoming accredited.
01:16 Power's baby-friendly hospital initiative aims to have hospitals implement practices
01:22 which protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
01:27 Breastfed children perform better on intelligence tests, are less likely to be overweight or
01:33 obese and less prone to diabetes later in life.
01:38 Women who breastfeed also have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
