00:00our dallas cowboys insider and probably dallas stars uh insider as well mickey spagnola good
00:07morning sir good morning gentlemen that's why i thought you wanted me on we were going to talk
00:13star yeah i mean i'm not lying about this when i said hey should we get mickey on kevin goes
00:18oh he
00:19can talk stars too let's get him on at 10 20. yeah and so and good timing because i was
00:24at the game
00:25last night okay nice i know it didn't end up in a goal but how much of an all-timer
00:31would it have
00:31been if miko would have scored after just bouncing the puck up and around off of his stick
00:39there was a lot of things that happened uh last night that were like are you kidding me yeah so
00:47my seats are up high but i'm behind the goal right um and when wyatt johnson went to throw the
00:59puck
00:59the length of the ice i'm watching it and i'm going oh no it's curving to the right and then
01:06all of a
01:06sudden it takes a left turn and goes in it was amazing and did you enjoy seeing the minnesota i
01:14guess de facto defender not seeming to think it was going to go in until he was like oh crap
01:20that
01:20is going to go in i better hustle up chasing it right yeah well and and and and when when
01:26have we
01:26started doing this now this has happened twice the last are actually in the last three times they
01:33played minnesota so the last uh regular season meeting you score a goal and then they try to beat
01:40you up yes how does that happen and then you go into the penalty box i'm with you man there
01:49was a
01:50couple of calls yesterday i did not care for but i think we should probably get used to it because
01:53it
01:53seems like these two teams really hate each other and there's going to be a lot more pseudo fights
01:59i was afraid that last night when i was going home i go oh i don't know i'm going to
02:04have a voice
02:04to talk radio tomorrow mickey i i gave a lot of credit because last night when we were watching
02:10on tv it just sounded like that that that room was loud and they were they were into that game
02:17was that one of those you're like yeah this is one of those you can mark down as a as
02:20an all-timer
02:21uh crowd uh helped out yeah absolutely it that uh the crowd showed up and realized it was a
02:28a playoff game um i sort of thought uh just watching on tv the the first game uh it i
02:37don't
02:37know if with the fans or the stars but they acted like they were playing game 60 well last night
02:44they
02:45played game 84 and things got ramped up pretty good right from the start before the puck was even
02:51dropped now i'm with you man and i know uh kind of we can bounce back and forth here in
02:57about 30
02:58minutes or so brandon aubrey is going to have his uh conference call how important was it to get
03:05this deal done and do you like the numbers that they came up with yeah actually they pushed it back
03:10to 330 now oh but anyway uh it was gonna get done i don't think there was any chance in
03:21the world
03:22look here's what happens and everybody forgets this it takes two to tango right sure the other
03:30side's got to want to sign so it's no in you know there was no like whoa it happened three
03:39days after
03:40the tender uh expired meaning teams could offer him an offer sheet they were they were just fishing
03:48they were hoping they knew that they were going to get seven million and they were hoping that
03:54somebody might offer give them an offer sheet that the cow cowboys wouldn't match and then three days
04:01later oh it's over with we're signing for seven million which they could have signed for seven
04:06million back in january if they wanted to but they were fishing uh and when it came to an end
04:12it's like
04:13okay let's sign and get this done and get me eight million dollar signing bonus in the bank uh today
04:22right yeah and 20 million guaranteed which i know that's the way the markets progress but just
04:27you know five years ago felt like that would have been pretty jaw-dropping well and here's the other
04:34benefit of giving getting a a long-term deal done uh not only does he get uh what was it
04:43eight point two five million signing bonus uh in his pocket today uh the cowboys reduced his salary
04:51cap charge uh from the tender which was what five point seven million uh so that this year he's going
04:59to charge against the cap three point four million so they saved a couple million dollars on the cap by
05:05signing him to a long-term deal at least for this first year and so next up now is the
05:11pickens deal
05:12and we're going to get that thing squared away before this draft oh please that's probably up to
05:17pickens okay all right okay well hopefully we can get something working here he were i mean he realizes
05:24he's got guaranteed twenty seven point three million dollars right yeah change so the cowboys certainly
05:32would like to reduce that uh but they're probably saying well if you want to do that you're going to
05:37have to pay me more uh and we'll see what happens but there's no way in the world he's going
05:44to pass
05:44up 27 million that's that's like four five times more than he's made in his first four years in the
05:53league do you ever think because i've been curious about this guy because i totally understand what
05:59you're saying i've always wondered especially in more recent years do you ever think that the players
06:05are like yeah that's true but that money will be there for me and so i can keep negotiating like
06:12hardline negotiating you know well i guess you could but in the end what's your recourse
06:20yes sit out yeah i guess right yeah and then if you have to play on a one-year deal
06:26you know go ask cd lamb he wasn't ready to start the season right yeah what if they never got
06:35that
06:35done and then you're five games into the season and you're going huh i'm going to be a free agent
06:42possibly next year and i'm not helping my market value but not playing at the level i'm used to
06:48playing at because i didn't do anything in the off season right yeah no i'm not that's kind of two
06:54sides to that as bill parcells would say the pancake i think and i think that still remains my biggest
07:02concern i have no doubt that something will get worked out but the sooner the better because as
07:07you just said i would love to avoid we would all love to avoid a slow start to the season
07:12for pickens
07:13much like cd lamb had had well i think yeah on that one you have to answer the question was
07:20last season's
07:21output the outlier right is that what you can expect going forward right and you know part of
07:28me is thinking and i don't know this that the cowboys are saying all right let me see that again
07:33before i
07:34invest five years within you makes sense because i to me i would love to put jerry on a lie
07:40detector
07:40and and adam did you really want to sign micah parsons long term did you trust him
07:50and do you think the answer on your mickey i think maybe there was part of him that said
07:57let's play this through one more year and see how invested he is into this team yeah being a part
08:05of
08:05that leadership group mickey i yeah exactly uh do you have for for let's say it is 12 do you
08:12have a
08:12a top three guys that you prefer if you were able to i know obviously uh having david bailey or
08:19arvel
08:20reese is a lot of fun but sure in that third 12 range do you have uh three dudes that
08:25you're like
08:25those are the three that i'd love to be able to choose from well if if i can do what
08:31other people
08:31do with mock drafts and kind of manipulate it to end up the way i want to end up what
08:39are you talking
08:39about oh i would i would uh have uh reuben bain sitting there for me i would have sunny styles
08:50sitting there for me uh and maybe the corner delane yeah or or even mesador i i think that guy
09:04gets
09:04overlooked i know he's a little bit older than everybody else but he plays like he's older than
09:11everybody else and i think uh i think he gets overlooked uh at that spot at 12 do you think
09:19that
09:19age is pretty much the only reason that so many people slide him down the board maybe because
09:27you're thinking well if i get a first round pick that high i want a second contract and his second
09:36contract will arrive at what 29 30 uh and then how much are you going to invest in that but
09:44for right
09:45now uh i'd rather do that than take somebody that i maybe don't have and i don't know how their
09:52board
09:52is you know ranked out but i would rather do that for now than take somebody lesser and hope
10:00they're good in the future now this is i know this is a broad question and there's a lot of
10:05different
10:05ways to answer it but going into this draft do you have confidence in the cowboys ability to draft well
10:12well if i go on history right and i did i did do this looked it up when they were
10:22drafting between
10:23one and number 17 they hit on 102 pro bowl performances interesting so when i when i looked up
10:38uh every draft pick i think i saw maybe six guys one two three four five six six guys that
10:49didn't make
10:49pro bowlers out of 25 guys i'm not counting tyler booker right yeah because just one year sure so of
10:57the other 25 guys the other 25 guys only six guys uh did not uh get into a pro bowl
11:05but they ended up
11:07being starters so they ended up with 25 guys right and seven of them are in the hall of fame
11:17eight are in
11:18the ring of honor and 17 um ended up being uh multiple pro bowl players so they've done a pretty
11:29good job when it's between one and 17 and i included 17 because i wanted to get emmett smith and
11:36cd lamb
11:36makes sense oh manipulation of the numbers mickey now uh but and i think that's all fair and i think
11:45a lot
11:45of people are with you but in this draft a whole lot of teams have talked about hey maybe we'll
11:51trade
11:51down and i and stephen told us last week that brings its own complications to the table if the
11:57cowboys were to trade down whether it's at 12 or 20 to pick up some more picks for all the
12:02holes in
12:02the draft how do you feel about their ability to draft in the second round because i know as of
12:07late
12:08that has led to some big misses yeah and some big hits sure so i don't know what everybody else's
12:18percentages are uh look if if i'm trading down and i could see you trading down at 20 okay because
12:27a lot
12:27of these so-called mock drafts uh after 20 the next like four picks five picks were positions the
12:38cowboys wouldn't be interested in right so you get to 20 and there's two or three defensive guys
12:44you're sitting there going all right i'm good with any one of those so if i can go down to
12:5025
12:50and get one of them uh yeah especially if i can get a day two pick from somebody that wants
12:57to move
12:57up is i'm not big on on on you know using draft capital this year to move up in the
13:06with the 12th
13:07pick because i think it's going to cost you this year and next year right yeah and next year looks
13:13like
13:13a big draft i would think at 12 you should be able to pick a very good player and then
13:20when i get to 20 if if i can drop down five places and depending what that team wants to
13:26move up and
13:27get maybe i can get a second round pick and get back into the second round uh but i'm not
13:33big on
13:34trading way way down uh unless you think you got travis frederick at 31 now i know that it probably
13:43will just depend on what the board gives you but could you picture a world and would you support a
13:48world in which the cowboys were just like hey every single player we drafted was a defender
13:54uh i would have no argument about that although i think by time you get to the fourth round or
14:03fifth
14:03round i think you've got to take an offensive lineman you've got to start building for the future
14:10the guy doesn't you draft him there and you got an opportunity to develop somebody you can't keep
14:17using first round picks for all five starting offensive linemen at some point you got to
14:24develop guys right um think about when they were really good in the 90s the highest pick wasn't
14:31until larry allen got there in 94 and he was a second round pick the rest of those guys were
14:38undrafted free agents and late round picks that were star or third round pick for stepnoski so at some
14:45point you can't keep spending your draft capital on all first five offensive linemen right yeah at some
14:54point you got to develop guys and and so i could see them doing that when you get later in
15:00the draft
15:01uh i could see them uh looking at a tight end uh at some point um you know that schoonmakers
15:11in the last
15:12year of his deal and you know he he would have need to step up to get another one uh
15:18so yeah i could
15:19see not every pick be in defense and plus think about what they've done in free agency too some of
15:27these guys you signed you probably thought they were going to step in and play and play right away
15:32uh so uh i think you could be pretty flexible after that third round pick man love the stars knowledge
15:41and all the cowboys and draft insight thank you very much for jumping on with us
15:46anytime guys just let me know absolutely boom there you go mickey spagnola
