00:00Tim Roy, on the call on Friday's game, 111-96, Warriors get eliminated.
00:06Were you at the lab at home?
00:08I was thinking about you two.
00:09Yeah, I was at home.
00:10All right.
00:13What was your main takeaway after the game?
00:17What were some of your thoughts after they got beat on Friday?
00:22I'm not mad as a fan.
00:25And I do understand if only if it was for one night against the Clippers, Steph Curry can still do
00:32that.
00:33I understand why you went out and got Butler.
00:36I understand why you brought in Horford and rolled the dice with Porzingis.
00:41And if Steve Curry decides not to come back or he doesn't come back, whoever Gandhi could be the Warriors'
00:48next coach,
00:48you're going to be, and I keep saying this, a slave to the availability and the health of your stars.
00:55And that's going to go a long way in regard to deciding what this iteration of the Warriors do moving
01:01forward.
01:02So I wasn't mad because Wednesday fed me, but it fed me a tablet of belief to where maybe could
01:11they do this again just 24 hours later,
01:1448 hours later, against Phoenix, and they couldn't, they ran out of gas.
01:19But now I'm thinking, Stiney, I'm being real because this is all we have right now.
01:23Our reality is, how's Jimmy's, you know, rehab going to go?
01:30Steph, runner's knee when he gets months off.
01:33And I guess we'll, you know, take a flyer on LeBron or Kawhi, see what goes down there.
01:42But I understand our reality and where we're at.
01:46And for a night, it looked like it still could happen against the Clippers.
01:51So I'm not angry.
01:53I just, I'm going to hope again come next November, late October, when the season starts.
01:59Yeah, the one thing that, you know, I wonder about with this team, and I think that they're kind of
02:08caught now.
02:09And Draymond talked about it right before the playoffs, about how, you know, the Warriors are a 16-game team,
02:16meaning that, you know, they're built for the playoffs.
02:20But the reality is, they're not built for the playoffs anymore.
02:25And I think the reality hit them last year, that maybe they're not a 16-game team either.
02:32Because in, you know, in 12 playoff games last year, Butler got hurt once and Curry got hurt.
02:38So I don't know that they can make it through a postseason with the particular roster they have right now.
02:46So they're kind of caught.
02:48I mean, they got a team that's struggling to make it through the regular season,
02:52and a team that's kind of struggling when they have to play a series where they might play five or
02:58six games in, you know, 12 or 13 games.
03:01So I don't know what the answer is to that.
03:04But it's clearly, you know, as much as this is going to hurt, you got to lessen the load on
03:10the veteran guys.
03:11But do you have the young guys who can chip in enough to keep this thing rolling in a positive
03:18direction?
03:18If you have a problem with my answer, lifelong fan, right now the answer is no.
03:23Well, then there's no way out of that except you're going to have a tough year next year.
03:28If your old players aren't as reliable and your young players haven't emerged yet to the point where you want,
03:35I mean, I don't know what you do then if you're the Warriors.
03:38I don't see a major revamp.
03:42I mean, I don't know how they change the team dramatically or even if they want to change the team
03:48dramatically.
03:49How about LeBron putting on a Warrior uniform?
03:52That's fine.
03:52I mean, you know, I think anything like that is a stopgap at this point.
03:58Well, no doubt about it.
03:59No doubt about it.
04:00But I will say this, before the ball tipped Friday night and as excited as I was about the Warriors'
04:07chances and all of Dub Nation,
04:09there was one way they were going to win the game.
04:12And that was if Steph Curry did what he did and went Superman.
04:16And I got to be careful here because life's unfair with real stuff.
04:20But we're talking about sports.
04:21But, Donnie, that was the title of the jam in Phoenix.
04:26Steph had to be Superman.
04:27He wasn't.
04:29And they didn't win.
04:31But, you know, I think to myself, well, what if you had the option of Jimmy Butler out there?
04:35You didn't.
04:36Then could it have gone a different way.
04:38But the reality is our guy's hurt.
04:41And now not only did he get hurt to lessen our chances of beating Minnesota in the second round last
04:48year,
04:49Steph Curry follows that year up with 27 missed games.
04:53And now an injury that nobody knows how to not describe, but how to tell how much it's going to
05:02be a part of his reality moving forward the rest of his career,
05:05which is scary if you're going to give him more chicken and expect the same results from him.
05:11And right now, from my viewpoint on the Warrior chessboard, Steph Curry is everything still.
05:17And, unfortunately, that's the problem.
05:21They're still asking him to do way too much.
05:25The Lord's work.
05:26And, you know, I mean, I just – I mean, I'd have to go back and look at all the
05:32games.
05:33But the one thing – and I'm interested to hear what Warrior fans, you know, think about this.
05:39It does feel like it's getting more and more difficult for Steph to put together stretches of games where he's,
05:49you know, as dynamic as he once was.
05:52I'm not saying anything that nobody doesn't know already.
05:55But it just – it feels like, you know, when he has a good game, it takes a lot out
06:00of him because the teams are still focusing on him defensively.
06:04And he can still use his greatness to have great games.
06:08But consistently, when teams are defending him like they're defending him and they have a supporting cast like they have,
06:16I just don't – I just don't know how he can keep playing consistently well over the course of a
06:24season or a playoff
06:25when, A, he's getting to be old and, B, he doesn't have a cast around him nearly as good as
06:33he did when he was in his prime 10 years ago.
06:36Wow.
06:37I hear you well said, and I'll just throw this back to you.
06:39I mean, how do you get better or how do you expect to do something different?
06:43And we'll just forget about Coach Kerr right now for this moment.
06:47When you've got about $130, $140 million invested in one guy that is definitely going to miss part of the
06:54season next year,
06:55Jimmy Butler and Steph and Dre, how do you accomplish that?
06:59And that's why I'm hoping this lottery somehow could be a gift from the basketball gods that they –
07:04something goes crazy and we get a higher pick than expected.
07:09But how – when your core is older but the money is going to them –
07:14You can't.
07:14Wow.
07:15I mean, I don't – like, I don't – I guess that was the answer I was looking for because
07:19right now that's how I see it.
07:22You can't.
07:22And the other thing is, like, these – all these – to me, all the decisions the Warriors are going
07:26to have to navigate,
07:27there's not like a right – there's not a right move and a wrong move.
07:31There are moves that are going to be impactful one way or the other.
07:36And look, Steph Curry said it after the game.
07:39He'd love to have his contract extended.
07:42I mean, okay, how does that go?
07:47How does that go?
07:49He's making 62 mil next year, so you've got to work out a number the year after next year.
07:55But you have to give him a contract extension after a year where he played 43 games
08:02and had an injury crop up that we haven't seen before, and he's going to be 39 next year.
08:10I mean, that's the first delicate situation that the Warriors have.
08:14It just is.
08:15And maybe Steph won't ask for Max.
08:18And maybe it won't need to be, you know, at a crazy number.
08:22But how do you even entertain that with Steph Curry, the contract after next year?
08:29I kind of – you know, I'm not comparing him to Trent Williams who got his bread,
08:33but I was so sure from the outside looking in that what the Niners are trying to do and accomplish
08:38and what standard or what level of play you're still getting from Trent Williams is still stellar.
08:44I knew it would get worked out, and it did.
08:47I think he got two for 50.
08:48See, Steph Curry's got way more left in the tank, you know, on the basketball level to me than Trent.
08:55But that's not the story.
08:56The story to me, Stonnie, is he's still your best player.
09:00The way that you're set up with Jimmy not taking the floor open at night next year,
09:04you still got to rely on 30 to do everything.
09:08And when he's out there, you know, he's still a problem.
09:12But that if now is rearing his head more now than when he signed his last extension
09:17because you didn't have the hammy going in the offs and you damn sure didn't have this runner's knee.
09:22But I guess I'm saying to you all, there's nothing to really see here because he's worth it.
09:27Well, worth what?
09:29All of it.
09:30Yeah, the box.
09:31You would do it.
09:31Whatever he asks, I got to give it to him.
09:32Okay, well, I hope he doesn't ask for $67 million or $60 million in two years.
09:39I mean, I just hope he doesn't ask for $60 plus million two years from now.
09:46And again, that's kind of what I mean.
09:48Like, would they do it?
09:49Maybe they'd have to.
09:50But I don't think that's great.
09:52There you go.
09:53I don't think it's great if that's the case.
09:57And there's a lot of those decisions, you know, they're going to have to make.
10:02You know, I was kind of messing around with Evan before he got in today.
10:06What'd you say?
10:07I was saying, you know what?
10:09I was kind of joking around, but maybe I wasn't.
10:12I said, this should be the hardball summer for the Warriors.
10:15But this could be the hardball summer.
10:17So what does a hardball summer look like?
10:19Well, okay, Steve, what are you doing?
10:22Okay, you don't really want to coach next year?
10:24All right, you don't have to then.
10:27Steph, you've meant everything to this organization.
10:31Let's table an extension.
10:33See how next year goes with your health.
10:36Draymond, you have a player option.
10:38We assume you're going to exercise your option.
10:41You'll be back for one more year.
10:43Okay.
10:43Butler.
10:44Nothing to do with Butler except wait for him to come back.
10:48Pods.
10:48You can wait, too.
10:50Yeah.
10:50Pods can wait.
10:52Melton.
10:53No rush on Melton.
10:55Horford.
10:56That's his decision.
10:57Let Horford make that decision.
10:59And then who else?
11:00Porzingis is a guy you're going to probably have to make a decision on.
11:03He says he needs some time.
11:04It's a very important offseason for him.
11:07Loves the bay.
11:07Loves the team.
11:08But he's got to go to the lab and see what's best for him.
11:11Yeah, I'm just, you know, I'm just, and again, it's kind of just a phrase, you know,
11:15play hardball this summer.
11:16But, you know, I do wonder if you could talk Steph into sitting tight for a year.
11:23It wouldn't mean.
11:24There you go.
11:25It wouldn't mean that we don't want you.
11:26But I'm sorry.
11:29I don't care if the guy's Jesus Christ.
11:33If you pay him an exorbitant amount of money two years from now, you got to know that he's
11:37going to be ready to play a certain amount of games.
11:41And I don't know that you can get a feel for that right now when he just had this runner's
11:46knee.
11:46But that's, again, that's a delicate situation.
11:49And I'm not, again, I'm not saying kick Steph to the curb, but boy, we could, we could use
11:56him just hanging in there for one more year for the sake of everybody, I think.
12:00No, I get that.
12:01And I do wonder if Lakeup would have the guts to say it.
12:04And maybe, Stiney, you could say back and I'll give you a chance to say, goo, that, that
12:08makes no sense.
12:09It doesn't take guts.
12:10But if I'm Steph Curry, all that I've done, I know I've gotten paid.
12:14And I remember the dibs model in regard to what Steph's getting paid.
12:19He's still underpaid for what he means to this franchise.
12:22But if you said, hey, can we table this basically because we don't trust or believe that your
12:28body can hold up?
12:30I wonder how the chef would, would that come across like too hardcore in a sense?
12:37Like almost if I'm Steph, like, oh, so now, now you don't, you know what I mean?
12:41Now I'm on tryout.
12:43I got to show you, huh?
12:44Yeah, you do.
12:45You're 39, buddy.
12:46You're 39.
12:48And you only played 43 games this past year.
12:51And you've come down with something that we all seem, everybody seems to acknowledge
12:57is something that's going to have to be mad.
12:59Like, here's the other thing.
13:01Yeah.
13:01What's, can somebody define what his new normal is?
13:06What if his new normal is 55 games a year?
13:09And what if he doesn't even know his new normal?
13:11What if it's 45?
13:12Exactly.
13:13So at that point, you know, you got to, you got to wait to see what it's like.
13:16We're going to see this new normal.
13:18We're going to see what it looks like next year.
13:21And maybe it'll look great.
13:23I don't know what it'll look like.
13:25And if it looks great, then revisit him the following year and sign him up for two more
13:32and call it a day.
13:33Well, I'll tell you this, I'm in your office now and I need San Jose Jazzman in the chat
13:37saying, Goose, stop making sense.
13:39I do have to say this, our new normal in Dub Nation now with old and young, because Moody's
13:44out, we don't know his availability.
13:47So is Jimmy Butler.
13:49Steph's got this injury.
13:51What if I told you the new normal for Dub Nation is, and we don't know if we're going
13:56to be healthy night in, night out.
13:57Oh, and one thing we do know is Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody will not be in the starting
14:04five, come next opening night, wherever that is.
14:08And Steph is, with this runner's knee, as you just talked about, there's a cloud.
14:14I'll tell you what, I'm so fascinated by how people think the next couple years should go.
14:22Chris A. from Oakland on the YouTube chat, Stiney's treating Steph like he's James Harden.
14:27No, I'm not treating him like he's James Harden, but I also am curious, and I'm not going to
14:35say I disagree or you're right or you're wrong, but how many Warrior fans out there are of the
14:44mind that just give Steph an extension for whatever, whatever it is for one or two more
14:51years, no matter what, no matter the money.
14:53Yeah.
14:54Okay.
14:55And if he's earned that, okay, you do.
15:00I hope people realize that when we say he's still worth it, like he's not, you realize
15:04that, don't you?
15:05Like, I get it.
15:06He's worth, he's really worth a billion dollars if we want to play that game because of the
15:12value of the organization.
15:13But you can't tell me a guy who played 43 games this past year, you have to continue
15:19paying him 60 plus million dollars.
15:22There's got to be a middle ground, right?
15:25There's got to be.
15:26We'll find out.
15:26And it doesn't have to be.
15:29And I'll say this with that exercise that you just, you put on with Steph.
15:34I mean, we could do that with about 10 or 12 players, Donnie, of no matter how old they
15:38are, are you getting a bang for your buck in regard to what they're getting paid and
15:43what you get?
15:44Not that that should make the Warriors feel better, but the buck shouldn't stop with Steph
15:49Curry.
15:49I mean, especially again, I'm living in the past.
15:52It was just last week.
15:53Wednesday night was exhibit A of he still can, you know, on one night.
15:57If that's good enough for you, then go ahead and do it.
15:59I would say that.
16:00It's good enough for me to write that check, but try to get better around the edges.
16:05So if he's not that on, on said night, we still, it's not 98% of our chances to win
16:12said game.
16:13We got to get better around them.
16:15Well, you can, if you're going to give him 65 more, like it's really going to be hard,
16:19you know, right now, like people say, well, what can we do next year?
16:24And the only, the only thing they have is LeBron.
16:28And I don't like, I read that.
16:31I read a story in ESPN about LeBron.
16:33I feel so far fetched that he's coming here.
16:36Like if you just look at the things, well, it doesn't make sense for him to come here.
16:41I don't believe, but you know, if, if people want to hold onto that until he, you know,
16:48makes his decision, that's fine.
16:50I just, they, they don't have a lot of options right now with Steph and Butler on the team
16:57occupying as much money as they are occupying.
17:00It's going to be hard.
17:01The only, look, they got two things, maybe give it to them.
17:03They got their 11th pick in the draft and then they got, and then they got a, or lower.
17:10And then they got a, and then they got a, some kind of mid-level, one of the two mid
17:15-levels
17:15to use.
17:17But other than that, I don't, I don't know.
17:19I'm being so serious with this question I'm posing to you and the, and the listeners.
17:23Last year, when Steph pulled that hammy and Kaminga looked to have, have had, to me, a
17:30breakout playoff performance that was going to turn his career around in a warrior uniform.
17:35And this next season, which just passed, was going to be, watch out.
17:39I felt good about everything moving forward that there was no way in hell.
17:45And I'm always one of those, a big take Jake at the end of the season going into the next.
17:51But what if I told you this is the first season in a long time, then I don't feel confident
17:57saying this warrior team is going to make the playoffs next year.
18:00Because that's the goal.
18:02Especially after not qualifying technically this one.
18:06There's no way in hell you feel like this warrior team can miss the playoffs next year.
18:11Can you?
18:13Wait, do you think they can?
18:14Yes, of course.
18:16Of course they can miss the playoffs next year.
18:19Why would you say that you wouldn't think they could?
18:21Like they missed them this year.
18:23And that's the year they're older.
18:24Well, Jimmy went down.
18:25Jimmy's going to miss, but he'll be coming back.
18:27You can, okay.
18:27And hopefully Steph kicks runner's knee in the ass.
18:30Okay.
18:31And then, and, and everything goes right.
18:34What do you have?
18:36See, that's what I don't know.
18:37I hope that would be a fourth, fifth, or sixth seed in the playoffs and avoid the plan.
18:42Okay.
18:42And I think that's, that's what they're going to do.
18:45Try and do.
18:46That might be all they can do, quite frankly.
18:50But no, I mean, if, if you're asking me right now, could they have another season like this season?
18:57Of course they can.
18:59My gosh.
19:00Why?
19:00Like, of course they can.
19:06They, like, first of all, they better be healthier than, than this year.
19:10And that, again, that is everything, but you can't predict it.
19:14And right now it's not on their side.
19:16Let's go to Chris in San Jose.
19:19Hey, Chris, how you doing?
19:22Gentlemen, I got to admit, it's been a very rough year.
19:24Yeah.
19:25I'm perturbed with this organization and writing.
19:28So, they're acting like a clown show.
19:31You've got a guy who has a clown haircut and Draymond acts like a clown.
19:35Are we going to allow him to continue to embarrass the organization the way he did last night?
19:41We can't do this.
19:43He's a bully.
19:44We know he's bullying everyone around him.
19:47Oh, we're afraid.
19:48I know we're San Francisco, but we've got to have some dog about us as fans.
19:53We can't go soft.
19:55We're getting older, as Charles Barkley would say.
19:59We can't go older, get older.
20:01We need young blood.
20:03We need to revamp.
20:04Dish the whole thing.
20:05Throw it out, man.
20:07This money could go to charity.
20:08Don't give him $62 million.
20:10He, he, he, he runs 10 miles a game.
20:13He falls down 25 times.
20:15Don't you know he's going to get hurt again next year?
20:18He can't get open without running around five and 10 miles a game?
20:22Create an offense.
20:23Take the weight that the balance of the infants is off of Steph scoring 35 points.
20:29Come on now.
20:29We deserve better.
20:30Thanks, Chris.
20:32Appreciate the call.
20:35I didn't get to hear you and Evan.
20:37And again, it's in my short radio career.
20:39It, it, it, it hurts me that I missed that show, that euphoria from the station and the fans.
20:44Um, but he could not have made that call about Draymond Green Thursday after what Dray personally did Wednesday to
20:53show you what he's still capable of.
20:55That's why he waited until Monday.
20:56And I was disappointed Friday.
20:58And I'll give you a two on that.
20:59And I was disappointed that Dray got ran Friday.
21:03I'd like champs to go out that light like that.
21:06I swear to me, I see you just got your flowers.
21:09Yeah, hey, I'm just telling you how I saw it.
21:11But the bottom line is Dray is the winner and he's in control of this player option.
21:17He's no fool.
21:18And he's talking about I might not be here.
21:20Now, if they pulled off a trade or something like that, you wouldn't.
21:23But that's highly unlikely.
21:25Dray would be a fool to turn down that, that team option he has.
21:29I mean, I just look at it.
21:30Come on, man.
21:31Yeah, I mean, Curry was great on Wednesday.
21:34He stunk on Friday.
21:35Draymond was great on Wednesday.
21:38Took all his flowers.
21:39Received them from Kawhi Leonard.
21:41Went out on Friday.
21:43Absolutely stunk up the gym.
21:45And then, and then pulls what he always pulls at the end.
21:50Now, I don't care.
21:51Yeah.
21:52I don't care that he got thrown out.
21:54I'm trying to fight you on that.
21:54All I care about is do the math.
21:57But Porzingis was, Porzingis, Horford, Draymond, and Curry were all pretty good on Wednesday.
22:02And none of them could come to post on Friday.
22:05Like, none of their old guys can string together, like, it's hard for their old guys to string together long
22:13stretches of really good play.
22:15But it was that way from the outset.
22:17Right.
22:17So, I don't know why we would come back next year unless we have to.
22:22And if we have to, we have to.
22:24But I'm not, I would not be excited about, you know, running this back.
22:31But I would understand if they, if they have to end up running it back.
22:37Do you hold on to your bread in regard to what you think you want to pay Porzingis and give
22:43Quentin Post another shot at it or anybody else?
22:46Because if you're telling me you're going to write that check for Porzingis, but you still think you could miss
22:51the offs, to me, that doesn't match.
22:54And, again, I'm not saying Warrior Headquarters are saying we don't got a chance, Koo.
22:58But, Stiney, you got to roll the dice and hope you're a healthier ball club next year.
23:02And that's going to be bigger than any addition you could make at this point to me.
23:06Well, keep in mind that you're not a regular team hoping to stay healthy.
23:11You're an injured team that's already been injured hoping to stay healthy.
23:16And as for Porzingis, I'm back to one year and one year only tops for him.
23:22I can't have salaries bleed into 20, 27, 28 unless it's guys that I want on the team for sure
23:32that I know I want on the team right now.
