Steiny & Guru react to Steph's comments over the weekend about the long-term outlook on his injury.
Transcript
00:00Good. Speaking of very good, Steph Curry was very good the other night.
00:05Saturday night he talked to the media for a while. It was after Saturday's practice.
00:10And this is the quote that I want to talk about because we have to.
00:18This is Steph Curry on if he received a level of comfort that this wouldn't linger in the next year.
00:29Yes and no. There's nothing structurally wrong with my knee, so it's not like I'm compromised out there.
00:34It is a new normal, though, if that makes sense.
00:36It's just a matter of understanding what I need to do off the court to make sure everything around my
00:41knee is strong, firing the right way.
00:43I will take full advantage of the offseason whenever it is to have a full reset.
00:48And then you just kind of figure out what it looks like going into next year.
00:51But right now, I kind of understand what the new normal is, and it's good enough to play.
00:56It's good enough to play. It was good enough to play on Sunday.
01:04What did you think when you heard that?
01:06I can only tell you what I thought.
01:08And I'm about to tell you, and I don't like it, and it's cryptic.
01:12And that's too strong.
01:14That he knows this thing is so severe, it can rear his head at any time.
01:18He's officially 38, and him dealing with this or having to battle with it, he knows it's not over.
01:28But what scares me when he said new normal is they will duel again.
01:34And it's about runner's knee versus Steph Curry.
01:39How long will it keep him out then?
01:41Because it's not going away, and it might just be a part of his basketball life now.
01:49I agree.
01:50And then I'm wondering, well, what is his basketball life now?
01:57And didn't we just see it the other night, Sunday night?
02:00Well, I mean, yeah, he was good the other night.
02:03But when I heard new normal, I can only tell you what I thought, and it was this.
02:11It was, you know, we've been very cavalier about how long Steph Curry's going to play.
02:19Right.
02:20We just two, three, maybe four, you know, not five, not six.
02:24You know, why can't he play until 40, 41, 42?
02:28And when you get to be this age, it's just a year-by-year proposition.
02:34And if I'm Steph Curry, you know, I've been bringing up his contract
02:39and what he's going to do and how he's going to deal with it.
02:43Rightfully so.
02:46How can he, how can he, and I know, how can you be sure that next year Curry will,
02:55how can we be sure Curry will play after next year anymore?
02:58I hate to say this.
02:59I'm so petrified.
03:00I don't believe you can.
03:03I don't either.
03:04Okay.
03:04Like, I mean that.
03:06So if, if, you know, at the end of this season, and Steph says, give me two, you know,
03:15I don't know that he'll push for another year.
03:20I got you.
03:20But if he is concerned about next year and the new normal, I mean, what if the new normal
03:27is, and I think it is, that he's not, he's never going to play more than 60 games anymore,
03:3465.
03:34He's never going to play any back-to-backs anymore.
03:37I'm okay with that, though, because that's the new 82.
03:39Okay.
03:40Then that's, that's fine.
03:42Are you ready for the offs?
03:45He's, he's led next two to three.
03:48See, that's what I mean.
03:50Because you're not making them if you don't have the healthy version of them.
03:54Exactly.
03:55But I'm, I'm more worried about this injury and the fact that he seems to indicate it crops
04:03up.
04:04Yeah, man.
04:04And it's kind of ubiquitous, but it, it feels good on, on some days.
04:10I got it.
04:11I heard it.
04:12Just a quick update in regards to Steph to tonight.
04:14He's got to be playing, Evan.
04:16Don't, don't, don't, don't.
04:16Oh my God.
04:17Yeah, don't.
04:18He's probable.
04:19Oh.
04:21But Gu was worried that he was listed as questionable.
04:24Right.
04:24Also, Chris Epps Porzingis is questionable and Guy Santos is out.
04:30Damn.
04:32I know you're making, thank you, Evan.
04:33I know you're making.
04:34No, I'm actually not.
04:35About Santos?
04:36No, about, I want to talk about Porzingis defensively, but we'll do that later.
04:40Keep going on with your staff.
04:41Well, this is, this is Steve Kerr.
04:44He was on with Willard and Dibbs.
04:46Hey, what does new normal mean and how do you feel about it?
04:49I mean, he's 38.
04:51It's, it's not like this is news.
04:53Father time beats everybody at some point.
04:57And, you know, I think you, you, the comps that, that you would look at for Steph would
05:03be other guys who played as physician, you know, John Stockton, Steve Nash, you know,
05:08both guys played at a really high level for a long time and kept great care of their bodies.
05:15You know, they didn't have probably the, the, the, the same knowledge and wisdom that we
05:21have now in terms of ways to, to lengthen careers.
05:25Why you're seeing guys like Kevin Durant and LeBron and Steph playing at such a high level
05:29still, but it can only go, go on.
05:31Even if, you know, if it's the best of circumstances, it can only go on a few more years.
05:36Um, so it's, uh, Steph's just being realistic and being honest and, and, uh, the new normal,
05:42I guess just means, you know, when you're 38, that's, it's, it's a lot different.
05:47All right.
05:47That was Steve Kerr talking about, uh, Steph Curry, who says he's got a new normal.
05:52What about the Benjamins?
05:53When is, when that, that bill is due, is he going to take that into account that this
05:58possibly could rear his head and the new normal is I won't go for the gusto and all the money
06:03that I normally would, or is it all systems ago and this is what comes with it now.
06:09And hopefully we don't see it flare up, but I'm wondering not a hometown discount at all,
06:14but is he taking that into a, into account too, when he's asking for what he wants?
06:20If I'm Steph Curry and I'm talking about this new normal and I have to reset my entire off
06:28season training regimen and it's trickier than any injury in the past.
06:35And he's got one more year left in his deal.
06:41I don't know that he should ask for an extra year.
06:45I mean, here's what it feels like to me.
06:50Feels like to me, Steph is saying, okay, it feels pretty good right now.
06:54We'll see how it feels, you know, next year, but this is all new to me.
07:01And I don't know.
07:02I get the sense that maybe he won't ask for an extension.
07:08And if you're Mike D and Joe Lacob, do you meet him if he doesn't and say, Hey, what
07:16about this?
07:17This has changed some stuff.
07:18You know, can we be honest with you and have a conversation on that?
07:21I guess you're going to have to, I guess you're going to have to, but I mean, at this
07:27point, I mean, I don't know.
07:30It's just fascinating to me because I have no sense at all for what anybody's doing or
07:37thinking, including Steph Curry.
07:39Does Steph Curry want another year after this year?
07:43I'm with you, man.
07:43Um, to me, I feel like he might not want another year right now because of the need,
07:52because of the need, because he's going to go into next year with a cloud of uncertainty.
07:58And if he can't get it done next year, then what's he going to do?
08:04Then maybe he, you know, he reconsiders.
08:08Um, but I don't know what you do.
08:12I mean, I'm just thinking crazy thoughts.
08:15I mean, if he comes in and says, Hey, um, yeah, I know I'm, I only played 40 games this
08:20year and I'm under contract for 62 next, but I, I want 64 in, uh, 20, 27, 20, 28.
08:27I mean, I don't know if that's going to be a problem, but that's going to be a challenge.
08:35Yeah.
08:35Who was it?
08:36Willard or dibs or was it, uh, the guys in the morning, butch and, uh, Spadoni, but somebody
08:41came in yesterday.
08:42I was driving.
08:43I know my teammates.
08:45Um, and they made the point of after what we saw, and it was one game Sunday night and
08:50how that building was off the chain chase center.
08:53You know, what you're paying Steph, he, he not even getting nowhere close enough to what
08:59he's really, truly worth.
09:01Well, you know what I mean?
09:02So that's, you know, that's the way you looked at it.
09:05I look at it as they're a, they ain't getting close to enough because he's only played 40
09:09games.
09:10Well, this year you would be right.
09:12Right.
09:15And how many is he playing next year?
09:17Like if you had a gun to your head right now and I said it at 60, what, what would
09:21you
09:21I'd say under, I would say under, but I don't think he's going to play back and I'm okay.
09:26That's five more games.
09:27Yeah.
09:28Especially now with all these guys not able to get awards because of the 65 number.
09:32But if you told me he played 60, but he'll be healthy for, and you made no guarantees.
09:40See, and that's why I'm like, man, I would be like, okay, get your ass, man.
09:48I don't know how many he's going to play, but I wouldn't count on 65 or 70.
10:05My question is, I guess here's what I'm saying.
10:08I think this injury has to make Steph think how much he's got left in the tank and the
10:14organization as well.
10:16Right.
10:16Isn't it twofold?
10:17I don't know.
10:18Like, that's a great question, goo.
10:19I don't know.
10:20Like if Steph Curry asked for an extension, did you just, here's the blank check.
10:26I mean, really?
10:28See, that's why I don't think he's going to do that, but I could be wrong.
10:31Obviously, but I got to be careful because I could hear you laughing already.
10:36I don't know, Steph.
10:38I think I know him from what we know of him, and he's been kind with his time.
10:42But I think the guy that I think he is understands what happened, what could possibly happen in
10:50the future.
10:51And partner, what if I told you, like, that will come into play, not him being greedy.
10:57Like, he understands that, and he won't take advantage of it.
11:00Because if he just act like it didn't happen, and it didn't keep him out for 26, then I
11:06think that would be doing a disservice to the team.
11:09Yeah.
11:10I mean, I think, you know, what if, let's say, next year, we finally have to address his
11:17minutes.
11:18Let's say something like that happens.
11:20Okay.
11:20And now he can't play, or you don't want him to play any more than 28 minutes a game.
11:27Yeah.
11:27So now you've got to factor in a 28-minute-per-game player with a guy who you don't know
11:37how many
11:38games he'll play at 28 minutes.
11:40Listen, it's just going to be a tricky situation for the Warriors to figure out.
11:45And the problem is, is that they have too many guys like Steph, where going into next
11:50year, you just don't know what you're going to get out of players.
11:55And he said it, and that's what I think he meant by new normal.
11:59This thing could pop off at any time.
12:01And you and me being older men, that's how it goes.
12:05Once he shows up, it's here, and, you know, it bothers me.
12:11This is some good news from yesterday.
12:14This is Steve Kerr talking to Willard and Dibbs about how Curry felt earlier in the day
12:19yesterday.
12:20Yeah, he was fine today at practice.
12:22We didn't really do much, but, you know, we walked through some stuff and watched film,
12:28and he got some treatment, and he seemed to be doing fine.
12:32There wasn't any concern about tomorrow night.
12:36So, you know, he really took his time with the rehab, did everything right, you know,
12:42followed Rick's instructions.
12:44And that's why we've been so adamant that, you know, if everything came together, he would
12:50be playing.
12:51I mean, this has been unfolding now the last few weeks.
12:57Obviously, lots of speculation and drama, but, you know, the bottom line is he's gotten
13:02healthy, and he's healthy now, and that's why he's playing.
13:05All right.
13:05And he looked healthy on Sunday, no doubt about it.
13:09My question is, you know, if Steph Curry suffered this injury, and he thought it was only going
13:20to be a week or two, because he said that, then what, like, what does that mean that it was
13:25two
13:25months, that if he feels it again, it's going to take as long?
13:31What if it takes longer?
13:33Exactly.
13:34And that's what I think he meant by new normal, is he doesn't know until he goes through it.
13:39Right.
13:40But my thing is, and I'm in denial, and just real quick here, I'm hoping he never has to
13:46go through it again, but I just told you that would be unrealistic.
13:49Like, his new normal means this thing could pop up at any time.
13:53Right.
13:54And that's why, that's why I think it would be best for everybody to just have Steph come
14:02back and see the kind of year he has, and then see if he wants to keep playing.
14:08And if he's, I hate to say this, but if he's able to keep playing.
14:14Yeah.
14:15But next year is, next year is going to be everything.
14:19It's the year before the year that you've been talking about, and I want to throw this
14:22out, and I'm saying it now, and you can put it in the cap, Evan, or you guys.
14:28When they lost to Sacramento in the play-in game, and Klay went 0 for 10, I'll never forget
14:33that, that feeling I had of despair, just like, man, they beat us.
14:37Listen, Keon Ellis was taking it from Wiggins and Steph.
14:41Okay.
14:42But, Stiney, I'm telling you, I'm here for Curry and the Warriors.
14:46If somehow they lose this first game at Portland or wherever they're at, I'm going to pop some
14:52bubbly in regard to the euphoria that I have until proven otherwise.
14:59On this lottery thing and the odds, you know, minute, slim, but man, I am going to really
15:07try to do some good stuff in my life for other people so that can translate to the Warriors
15:14and their chances.
15:15Is this really the way you think?
15:17You're going to behave, and that may impact if the Warriors get a draft pick?
15:21I'm going to do a lot.
15:22I'm going to do a lot.
15:23Like, you know, it's not going to be a damn thing.
15:24I want us to win and get a playoff series, but if we don't, I'm not coming in here Monday
15:30like, oh, Guru's dead.
15:34I'm getting excited just to thought of if something could pop off.
15:37They got about a 12% chance.
15:39What did Dallas have?
15:40I got it.
15:40It was higher.
15:41Okay.
15:42And look who they got.
15:43Right.
15:44And I know it's a hard times in Dallas right now, but is it really, you know, watching
15:47that kid Cooper flag play, it's like, oh boy.
15:51Evan, you know how they, and I know it's a little different, but when you flip a coin,
15:55heads or tails, 50-50 either way.
15:57So you flip a coin.
15:59Why are you laughing at that?
16:00So you flip a coin and it's 50% tails, 50% heads.
16:04So it's one or the other.
16:05Okay.
16:06Then you flip it again.
16:07Guess what?
16:08It's 50% that it could come out either way.
16:10But the odds get less when you do it twice in a row.
16:17You know what I mean?
16:18It's harder to do it twice in a row.
16:20So I guess what I'm saying is.
16:21To get both heads.
16:22Exactly.
16:22So what I'm saying is, if the Warriors, let's just say they have a 2% chance, 3% chance
16:30to
16:31get the number one pick.
16:32Let's go!
16:32If you combine it with last year, they got even less of a chance this year because it
16:39happened last year and it's only supposed to happen twice in 50 years.
16:44Well, I don't think that's how that works.
16:47No, that is.
16:48But I feel them on Dallas used it all up.
16:51The odds of a team moving up in the lottery for one year is greater than the odds of a
16:58team
16:58moving up two years in a row.
17:00I agree with your premise.
17:01I agree with your premise, but statistically, they're separate events.
17:05You're right.
17:06Separate events.
17:07You're right, they are.
17:08But I don't like the fact you said Dallas used it all up.
17:12They might have.
17:12Not only Dallas, the other teams that moved up too.
17:15This is where you're more like you than you think, though, because you're basing it off
17:18of luck.
17:19That's what you're doing.
17:21Right.
17:21But it's luck, though.
17:24I mean, this is what I mean.
17:26This is what he's going to do.
17:28No, I'm not.
17:28This is what he's going to do.
17:29He's going to be like, sorry, get lottery, lottery.
17:33I think they get lottery.
17:34Who knows?
17:34Dallas last year.
17:35Then they're not going to win the lottery.
17:37They're going to get the 15th pick in the draft, and he's going to be like, ah, buzzards
17:40luck.
17:42No, the Warriors can't get a break.
17:44I just want to know who they're sending, man.
17:46Well, I don't know who they're sending, but I could tell you who they're getting right
17:49now, because he played last night.
17:50I know who they're getting.
17:51Uh-oh.
17:53Leidenberg?
17:54Mullins.
17:55Man, he's a baller.
17:56Money Mullins.
17:57Oh, no.
17:58Oh, don't.
17:58You've got to be kidding me.
18:00Uh-oh.
18:00Lock it up.
18:01I don't take that kid five years to play in the NBA.
18:04He's 19.
18:05Exactly.
18:06We don't have that five.
18:08Is Mullins better than Potts?
18:11In five years, he might be.
18:12Wait, seriously, though.
18:13He didn't stand out to you at all?
18:15I liked.
18:16You know who the guy I liked was the guy who, that McKinney guy.
18:20Oh, from Michigan?
18:21Yeah, he just, like, he wasn't, he didn't go nuts, but every time they needed a play,
18:26he seemed to make it.
18:27I like Leidenberg, too.
18:29I like his, uh, the big guy stinks.
18:32Well, I just think it's hard to, we talked about this earlier, it's hard to judge a player
18:36on a clearly superior team to the team they're playing.
18:40I mean, do the Warriors really need another guard?
18:44They need a lot of things.
18:45If the guards aren't anything like Steph Curry, he would take a few of them.
18:48Um, the white, the big white guy I wasn't crazy about.
18:52The big black guy was pretty good.
18:53Yeah, the lefty for UConn.
18:55No, not Reed.
18:56I like him.
18:57You mean Mara?
18:58No, the other big guy from Michigan.
19:00Oh, uh, Johnson.
19:02Yeah, he, he, he's pretty physical.
19:06I don't know if he can play at the next level.
19:07You don't like the big for, uh, UConn, huh?
19:10The lefty.
19:11Not really.
19:12He missed like seven jump hooks.
19:14That was the indoor ball.
19:16As soon as you said the indoor ball, I said, that messed him up.
19:20I, like, there's gotta be something to that.
19:22Those, that is strange.
19:26I don't know why they do it.
19:28I really don't.
