00:01:33Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?
00:01:39How to get to Sesame Street?
00:01:43How to get to Sesame Street?
00:01:47Oh, hi. You know what? Oscar sent me to the store for five pounds of sugar.
00:01:52I can't imagine what he wants it for, but I'm glad you're here in time to see what Oscar's up
00:01:56to today.
00:02:02Oscar?
00:02:03Yes? Oh, hi, Susan.
00:02:05Here's your sugar that you asked for.
00:02:07Oh, thank you.
00:02:07Five pounds.
00:02:08Oh, five pounds is what I need.
00:02:10I'm going to put it right down here in the kitchen.
00:02:13Gee, you look, you look like you're getting ready to cook something, huh?
00:02:17I certainly am. A friend of mine is having his birthday party today.
00:02:23Herbie the Grouch is ten years old.
00:02:25Uh-huh.
00:02:26And I've got a nice birthday card and a present for him, and I'm going to bake him a cake.
00:02:32That's awfully nice of you, Oscar.
00:02:33Yeah, I know.
00:02:34I bet you got him a really pretty birthday card, huh?
00:02:37Uh, oh, yeah. I got him a great birthday card.
00:02:40Uh, you want to see it?
00:02:42Yes, I'd love to.
00:02:43Okay, just a minute.
00:02:44Okay.
00:02:45It's down here on the piano.
00:02:46Yeah, there we go.
00:02:47Yeah.
00:02:48This is it, huh?
00:02:50Yeah, that's it.
00:02:51Gee, Oscar, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but this isn't very pretty.
00:02:55Pretty?
00:02:57Hey, Herbie's a grouch like me.
00:02:59Grouches don't like pretty things.
00:03:01Oh.
00:03:02Herbie will like that card.
00:03:04He will.
00:03:04Now, why don't you read it?
00:03:05To Herbie, roses are red, violets are blue.
00:03:09Have a horrible birthday.
00:03:10We all hate you.
00:03:12Yeah.
00:03:12Oscar, that's not a nice thing to say on somebody's birthday.
00:03:16Oh, yeah?
00:03:17Well, listen to this one.
00:03:18Ahem.
00:03:19To Herbie.
00:03:21Roses are red.
00:03:22And don't you forget, you're the rottenest person that I ever met.
00:03:28Oh, Oscar.
00:03:29That's...
00:03:30How about that?
00:03:31Well, I bet you got him a nice present, anyway.
00:03:33Well, yeah, I got him a nice present.
00:03:36You want to see it?
00:03:37Yeah, I'd like to.
00:03:38Sure, listen to it.
00:03:40There you go.
00:03:41Oh, but it's all beautifully wrapped.
00:03:43That's nice, Oscar.
00:03:44It looks very pretty.
00:03:46Yeah, yeah, well, open it up.
00:03:47You don't mind if I open it?
00:03:49No, no, I can wrap it up at night.
00:03:51Oh, okay.
00:03:53Gee, I wonder what this is.
00:03:54It looks so pretty.
00:03:58Gee, Wes.
00:04:01Gee, you got it sealed in here so nicely.
00:04:05Oh, Oscar, it's a terrible present to give to somebody.
00:04:09Ah, boy.
00:04:12How do you like that, huh?
00:04:13I think it's ugly.
00:04:15Ah, old Herbie will love that present.
00:04:16Oh, he will?
00:04:17It's a perfect present for a grouch.
00:04:19Oh, boy.
00:04:20Well, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go bake my cake.
00:04:23You're gonna make a cake all by yourself?
00:04:25I certainly am.
00:04:26I got a big blob of bitter batter already.
00:04:29The oven is hot, and I'm gonna make a great cake.
00:04:32I'll see you later, Susan.
00:04:34Yeah, bye, Oscar.
00:04:36Well, I'll tell you one thing.
00:04:38I hope he doesn't bring me any presents on my birthday.
00:04:41And if I wanted a cake, I wouldn't go to Oscar for it.
00:04:44I'd go to the baker down the street.
00:04:54My name is Shep.
00:04:56That's me with my mommy going into the bakery around the corner.
00:05:01Mommy wanted to get an apple cream pie for dinner.
00:05:03I'll tell you, could I have one of each of these fruit tarties in home?
00:05:08Sal, the baker, came out with some cookies.
00:05:11And I wondered what it would be like to be a baker.
00:05:14I thought about it real, real hard.
00:05:18And suddenly...
00:05:22I was a baker.
00:05:24You have to go to work?
00:05:26Yeah.
00:05:26Let's go.
00:05:31Sal took me into the bath where they make the pie.
00:05:34And I met Donato, one of the other bakers.
00:05:38And they showed me how to make an apple cream pie.
00:05:40That's the thing.
00:05:41We got a good pom-pom margarine.
00:05:44Donato took the butter and we weighed it and put it in a big bowl.
00:06:06Then he took some flour and we weighed that and put it in the bowl.
00:06:15After he put some sugar and other things in,
00:06:18he put a whole bunch of eggs into another bowl.
00:06:31Then he started mixing them up,
00:06:33like mommy does when she makes scrambled eggs.
00:06:38When everything was ready,
00:06:40Donato wheeled the bin over to a machine.
00:06:47When he turned it on,
00:06:49the machine started mixing everything together.
00:06:53Then he gave me the eggs to pour in.
00:06:57That was fun,
00:06:58watching them get mixed up with the other things.
00:07:04How much did that have to go for?
00:07:06Five minutes.
00:07:09When it was finished being mixed,
00:07:12Donato said it was called dough.
00:07:14While we were taking the dough out of the bowl and patting it flat,
00:07:18Sal was cooking a whole bunch of apples,
00:07:21so they would be all soft and juicy for the pie.
00:07:29When the apples were ready,
00:07:30Sal took the dough that Donato and I had made
00:07:33and started making the pie.
00:07:37Which one, the table?
00:07:39He took a big handful of dough
00:07:41and rolled it out flat with the rolling pin.
00:07:54Then he took a little pin
00:07:55and rolled the dough into it.
00:08:00How'd we get the apple?
00:08:03and filled it all up with apples.
00:08:10Then it was ready to be baked in the oven.
00:08:13So the dough would turn into pie crust
00:08:16and the apples would taste even better.
00:08:29After we took the hot pie out of the oven,
00:08:32Sal took a funny-looking bag
00:08:34and filled it with whipped cream.
00:08:48The bag had a hole in one end
00:08:50and Sal squeezed the whipped cream
00:08:52onto the top of the pie.
00:08:59Now it was finished
00:09:01and boy, did it look good!
00:09:04We put it in a box
00:09:06and took it out to Mommy.
00:09:11And suddenly...
00:09:16I'll bet Mommy never knew
00:09:18I helped to bake that pie.
00:09:23Didn't the things at that bakery look good?
00:09:25Now you see why I wouldn't go to Oscar for a cake.
00:09:28I'd much rather they go to the bakery.
00:09:30The things there really look nice.
00:09:31Hey, Susan!
00:09:33Susan!
00:09:34Yes?
00:09:34It's done, Susan.
00:09:35The cake is done.
00:09:36It is?
00:09:37Come on.
00:09:38Come over here and see it, huh?
00:09:39Well, only if you promise
00:09:41that nothing's gonna jump out at me.
00:09:42Ah, no, no.
00:09:43It's a real pretty cake.
00:09:45It is?
00:09:45Yeah, I'll show you.
00:09:49And, uh, careful...
00:09:52Oh, Oscar, you know this is a pretty cake.
00:09:54Let's straighten out the candles here.
00:09:57It is!
00:09:58Yeah.
00:09:58It's beautiful, Oscar.
00:10:00It even has writing on it.
00:10:02Yeah, yeah.
00:10:03You wanna read it?
00:10:04Read it.
00:10:05It says,
00:10:06Rotten birthday to Herbie.
00:10:08Oh, Oscar.
00:10:09You're not supposed to say rotten birthday.
00:10:12You're supposed to put happy birthday on a cake.
00:10:14Oh, no, no, no.
00:10:15Not if you're a grouch.
00:10:17We light the candles.
00:10:19We bring in the cake.
00:10:20And then we all sing
00:10:24Rotten birthday to you.
00:10:28Rotten birthday to you.
00:10:31Rotten birthday, dear Herbie.
00:10:38Rotten birthday to you.
00:10:41See, grouches don't have happy birthdays.
00:10:44They have rotten birthdays.
00:10:47The rottener, the betterer.
00:10:49Well, you have it your own way.
00:10:51Now, how old did you say your friend Herbie was?
00:10:54He's gonna be ten years old.
00:10:55Uh-huh.
00:10:55Well, I think maybe we better just count the candles
00:10:58to make sure you put enough on here.
00:11:01One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
00:11:11One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
00:11:20Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
00:11:26One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
00:11:37Ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten.
00:11:40How many you said?
00:11:46Ten toes.
00:11:48One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
00:11:56Ten triangles.
00:11:58One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
00:12:05Ten, ten.
00:12:17One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
00:12:27Ten line-up toys.
00:12:31One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
00:12:39Ten chocolate player cakes.
00:12:46And I got four of ten.
00:12:53Chris, what do we have ten of?
00:12:56We've got ten, uh, ten fingers, right?
00:13:01And ten fingers.
00:13:03And in your shoes, what do you have?
00:13:04Ten toes.
00:13:05Ten toes, right?
00:13:06Ten fingers and ten toes.
00:13:08That's about all the tens of things we have, right?
00:13:11Yeah.
00:13:11Yeah.
00:13:12Ten fingers.
00:13:13Bob, Chris.
00:13:14Now on, you can have ten of everything.
00:13:17What do you mean, Mr. Hooper?
00:13:18Because the Hooper's super-duper ten machine has been invented.
00:13:23Hooper's super-duper ten machine?
00:13:25Right.
00:13:25What is it?
00:13:27I'll show you how it works.
00:13:29Now, I have in my hand one jelly bean.
00:13:32Right.
00:13:32One jelly bean.
00:13:33I take this arrow and point it at the jelly bean.
00:13:39Now, Bob, do me a favor.
00:13:41Right.
00:13:41That red knob, press it gently.
00:13:46Gently?
00:13:47Yes.
00:13:52It's working.
00:13:53Right.
00:13:55Look at that.
00:13:56There we are.
00:13:57Here we are.
00:13:58Look at those jelly beans.
00:13:59Huh?
00:13:59How about that?
00:14:00Three, six, seven, eight, nine, ten jelly beans.
00:14:07Here you are, Chris.
00:14:08Mr. Hooper, that is terrific.
00:14:10You've really done it.
00:14:11Right.
00:14:12Hey, could we try it on something else?
00:14:14Maybe, uh, how about this ball?
00:14:17Will it work with that?
00:14:18Of course.
00:14:19I have it.
00:14:20Hey, we'll get ten balls, Chris.
00:14:21Now, I take this arrow, point it at the ball, and...
00:14:27Press the button again?
00:14:28Please, gently.
00:14:34Oh, it's working hard, isn't it?
00:14:37I think something's wrong.
00:14:38The ball might be a little too big for it.
00:14:41I see.
00:14:42Oh, here it comes.
00:14:42Here it comes.
00:14:43Here it comes.
00:14:44One, two, three, four, five, six.
00:14:47Get that one.
00:14:47Seven, eight, nine.
00:14:49Ten.
00:14:50Ten balls.
00:14:51Ah, that's marvelous.
00:14:53Hey, that is terrific, Mr. Hooper.
00:14:54My machine seems to be straining a bit.
00:14:56I guess it's because, you know, it works very well with the small things like jelly beans.
00:15:01Right, right.
00:15:01But a ball is a little bit too big for it.
00:15:03A little too big for it, right.
00:15:03Oh, you'll excuse me.
00:15:04I'm going inside and getting, and get some tools so I can adjust it, huh?
00:15:09Good.
00:15:09See you later.
00:15:10See you later, Mr. Hooper.
00:15:11We were just going down to the corner anyway.
00:15:13How about that, Chris?
00:15:14Scrabbity, scrabbity, quack, quack.
00:15:16Peep, peep, doop, whoop.
00:15:18What's this?
00:15:20Oh, a strange-looking machine.
00:15:24Hmm.
00:15:24I wonder what it is.
00:15:27Bet you Mr. Hooper made it.
00:15:29Sure looks complicated.
00:15:31Hmm.
00:15:32All those dials and buttons, and what's this thing?
00:15:37It's a...
00:15:38an arrow?
00:15:39Hmm.
00:15:40I wonder what it's for.
00:15:42Hmm.
00:15:43And wonder what this button is for.
00:15:45I wonder what would happen if I pushed it.
00:15:46Here.
00:15:47Hmm.
00:15:48Hmm?
00:15:51Uh-oh.
00:15:52Yeah, shouldn't have touched it.
00:15:54Oh, boy.
00:15:57Uh-oh.
00:15:58It's Dr. Smoke.
00:16:00Oh, no.
00:16:03Oh.
00:16:04Bam!
00:16:12What was an explosion?
00:16:14What was that noise?
00:16:15What are all these trash cans?
00:16:18Uh...
00:16:18Uh...
00:16:19Oh.
00:16:19Hi, Mr. Hooper.
00:16:21Look at my machine.
00:16:23Hmm.
00:16:24Hmm.
00:16:25Big Bird.
00:16:27You didn't by some chance take the arrow from this machine, point it at the trash can, then press the
00:16:35button?
00:16:37I'm afraid I...
00:16:38I'm afraid I...
00:16:38I did.
00:16:39Hmm.
00:16:40Oh.
00:16:41I'll have to build another machine, soon.
00:16:44Yeah.
00:16:45Gee, I'm sorry.
00:16:46Well, at least...
00:16:48Hmm.
00:16:49It worked one...
00:16:50...the last time.
00:16:51Yeah, well, all these trash barrels just flew right out of it.
00:16:55Yes, yes.
00:16:56I bet you there are tons of trash barrels here.
00:16:58Hey, well, it looks like it.
00:17:00One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

00:22:32All right, Lisa
00:22:33What story would you like?
00:22:37I'd like the one about Ivan
00:22:38And Lisa
00:22:39And the green humming cat
00:22:43Remember, Grandma?
00:22:45One day, Lisa and Ivan
00:22:47Were on their way to the corner store
00:22:49To get an ice cream cone
00:22:50When they saw a little fat man
00:22:52Selling balloons
00:22:54Oh, let's get a balloon
00:22:56Instead of an ice cream cone, Ivan
00:22:58Said Lisa
00:22:59Ivan agreed
00:23:02Mister
00:23:03We want a balloon
00:23:04And here's our money
00:23:08Well now, little girl
00:23:09You choose the balloon you want
00:23:13Give me two cents more
00:23:14And you can have a Hummer, too
00:23:19Lisa and Ivan
00:23:20Lisa and Ivan chose a bright green balloon
00:23:22And paid for the Hummer
00:23:26The little man attached the Hummer
00:23:28And began to blow
00:23:32He blew
00:23:35And he blew
00:23:36And he blew
00:23:38He blew
00:23:40He blew
00:23:40A large green cat
00:23:43Oh, mister
00:23:44What a fine green cat
00:23:47The balloon man tied a string
00:23:50Around the cat's neck
00:23:51And handed it to Lisa
00:23:53Oh, thank you, mister
00:23:55For this fine green cat
00:23:58As she took the string
00:23:59The cat floated behind her
00:24:02And Ivan
00:24:03Soon the green cat
00:24:05Began to hum
00:24:07Lisa was so excited
00:24:09To have a humming green cat balloon
00:24:12Walking down the street
00:24:14They soon met
00:24:16Lisa's friend
00:24:16Annabelle
00:24:18Oh, what a fine green humming cat
00:24:21You have
00:24:22Said Annabelle
00:24:22Oh, thanks
00:24:24Said Lisa proudly
00:24:26Then they met
00:24:27Mrs. Paisley
00:24:28Who said
00:24:29Oh, what a fine green humming cat
00:24:32You have, Lisa
00:24:33Oh, thank you, Mrs. Paisley
00:24:36Said Lisa proudly
00:24:39Joe and Mr. Huff
00:24:41Thought that Lisa
00:24:42Had the finest green humming cat
00:24:45They had ever seen
00:24:48Lisa was hurrying home
00:24:50To show her mother
00:24:52What is the fine green humming cat
00:24:53Look, look what Ivan's doing
00:24:55To the cat
00:24:56Why do you think Ivan's
00:24:57Attacking that cat like that
00:24:59I think he's a little jealous
00:25:01Of it, don't you
00:25:03When
00:25:04Bang
00:25:05And the fine green humming cat
00:25:08Was gone
00:25:10And only little bits
00:25:11Of green balloon
00:25:12Lay all over the ground
00:25:18Poor Ivan
00:25:20Our green humming cat
00:25:22Cat friend broke
00:25:24But that's all right, Ivan
00:25:25You still have me
00:25:27Oh, Ivan likes that
00:25:29See, she picked him up
00:25:32And that's the story
00:25:33I want you to tell me, Grandma
00:25:36And here comes Ivan
00:25:37He wants to hear it, too
00:25:39But what happened?
00:25:41She told the whole story
00:25:42So her grandmother
00:25:43Doesn't have to tell her
00:25:44At all, right?
00:25:46All right, Lisa
00:25:48That's the story I'll tell
00:25:51And
00:25:53That's the story
00:25:54Grandma told
00:25:57Lisa told the whole story
00:25:58Trying to tell her grandmother
00:25:59Which story she wanted to hear
00:26:01Sometimes you hear your book
00:26:02So often
00:26:03I guess you know
00:26:03The whole story
00:26:04Before your grandmother
00:26:05Even starts
00:26:07Um, how about some fine music
00:26:09From some fine musicians?
00:26:19I am a fine musician

00:29:26With those eggs and that cookie
00:29:27I think I'm going to learn to count that way
00:29:29Except I think I'm going to do it the other way around

00:34:40For his being in pajamas, Ernie

00:34:44One good reason
00:34:45Yeah
00:34:45He just got out of bed

00:52:33like to come? Boy, would I like to go for a walk today, Jim. I feel like a good walk
00:52:38today. Hold
00:52:39everything. What is it, Jim? Hold it. What is it? Look at your feet. Yeah, what's the matter with them,
00:52:47Jim? I just washed them. As a matter of fact, I took a whole bath. Buddy, that's not what I
00:52:52mean. I mean, look at your feet. Yeah? Didn't you just tell me you wanted to go for a walk
00:52:57with me? Sure would like to, Jim. Well, it's cold outside. You can't go out for a walk with your
00:53:02bare feet.
00:53:04Where are your shoes and socks? Oh, they're right there, where I left them. Well, go over and put them
00:53:09on so we can go for a walk. Oh, okay, Jim. Let's see here. I really do feel like a
00:53:16walk. There's one shoe. And here's a sock. Pretty socks. And here's another shoe on this foot. Hurry up, buddy.
00:53:30Okay. Hey, Jim, where are we going on the walk?
00:53:32I figured we'd go to the zoo today. Oh, boy. Maybe we'd see that big elephant again, huh? He's still
00:53:37there. Yeah. Boy, he was bigger than a parakeet last time I saw him. All right. I'm ready to go
00:53:43for a walk to the zoo. Let's go. Good. Wait, whoa. Oh, something wrong, Jim. What is it, buddy?
00:53:49The socks are slippery. I almost fell down. Buddy. What? Look what you've done. You put your shoes and socks
00:53:58on all wrong. Wrong? Of course you did. You got a shoe and a sock and a shoe and a
00:54:04sock. You're supposed to put the sock on first and then you put the shoe on after you put your
00:54:08socks on. You did it all wrong. Wow. Go back there and do it right. All right. Hurry up. It's
00:54:16getting late.
00:54:18Here we go. Hey, Jim. What is it? Maybe we'll see one of the zebras today, huh? We'll probably see
00:54:26two or three zebras, but you have to hurry up before the zoo closes. Right. You know something, Jim? You
00:54:31know what zebras have?
00:54:32What? Zebras have stripes. You didn't know any of that, did you? All right. Now I got a sock on
00:54:40another sock. And now I got a shoe on this foot and a shoe on that foot. Now. Ready to
00:54:53go. Let's go.
00:54:56Hey, Jim. What is it this time? Ooh. My shoes are attacking me. They hurt my feet. Wait a minute.
00:55:07There's something wrong here. Yeah, there's something real bad wrong with my shoes, Jim.
00:55:12Buddy. Huh? You've got your right foot where your left foot is supposed to be and your left foot is
00:55:19where the right foot is supposed to be. That's why your feet hurt.
00:55:23Is that why my feet hurt? Of course that's the reason. Whoa. What are we going to do now, Jim?
00:55:27It's very simple. Simple?
00:55:28All you have to do is cross one leg over the other and then your feet will be right. Really?
00:55:34Of course. Very simple.
00:55:36It's right over there. And now the shoes are where they're supposed to be.
00:55:42Well, you sure are smart, Jim. Let's go for our walk. All right. Ready now? Yep. Let's go. Let's go.
00:55:48Not too fast, though.
00:55:50Buddy. What is it? What's wrong?
00:55:52Well, nothing's wrong. I just can't go a little too fast there. You walk, take two big steps for me,
00:55:57Jim.
00:55:58Wait a minute. What is it?
00:55:59There's something wrong here. What's wrong?
00:56:03Buddy. Uh-huh?
00:56:05You've got your shoes on the wrong feet.
00:56:11I've got my shoes on the wrong feet?
00:56:13Certainly. You have your shoes on the wrong feet.
00:56:17They're the only feet I got.
00:56:20That's not what I mean.
00:56:22I mean that you have your left shoe where your right shoe is supposed to be, and your right
00:56:27shoe is where your left shoe is supposed to be.
00:56:30Yeah? So what do I do now?
00:56:32You've got to go over there and put the right shoes on the right feet.
00:56:35Oh, okay.
00:56:36Hurry up.
00:56:36Don't go away, Jim.
00:56:37I'm going to wait for you.
00:56:38All right. Don't go away. I'll be right with you.
00:56:40That's all right.
00:56:42I think I got it, Jim. I think I got it this time.
00:56:45Put your right shoe on your right foot and your left shoe on your left foot.
00:56:48Put your left shoe on the left foot.
00:56:49Ta-dam!
00:56:50There you are.
00:56:51I'm ready to go.
00:56:51I'm ready to go.
00:56:52No, you're not.
00:56:53What's the matter?
00:56:54Look at your shoes.
00:56:55What's wrong?
00:56:56You forgot to tie your shoelaces.
00:57:00Well, let that slip, didn't I, Jim?
00:57:03Well, I'll have it all done in no time.
00:57:06Do you know how to tie a bow?
00:57:07Oh, yeah.
00:57:08Okay.
00:57:08Tie a funny bow here.
00:57:11There.
00:57:12That's a nice bow.
00:57:14Okay.
00:57:14Let's go.
00:57:15Let's go.
00:57:15Let's go to the zoo.
00:57:16Not too fast, though.
00:57:20Hey, Jim.
00:57:21I'm not walking fast enough.
00:57:24I just don't think I can fix my feet.
00:57:27Jim.
00:57:29Hey, Jim.
00:57:30Can you fix my feet?
00:57:33Buddy, this time, I don't think I can fix your feet.
00:57:39Jim can't fix my feet?
00:57:40Not this time, but I've got a better idea.
00:57:42Good boy.
00:57:43You come outside with me now, and I'm going to teach you something.
00:57:46You know what I'm going to teach you?
00:57:48What?
00:57:49I'm going to teach you how to walk on your hands.
00:57:52You're kidding.
00:57:53Right outside, I'll teach you how to walk on your hands.
00:57:55Come on.
00:57:56You're going to teach me how to walk on my hands.
00:57:58Oh, boy.
00:57:59I can hardly wait.
00:58:04Jim's going to teach me how to walk on my hands.
00:58:06Oh, boy.
00:58:09Okay.
00:58:10That's about it.
00:58:11Time's up.
00:58:12But we're coming back.
