00:00Hello Backpackers, I'm Tyler West and welcome to Race Across the World, The Detour.
00:04This is your travel buddy for the show that's got us all crossing our fingers and our legs.
00:09I hope this bus has a toilet, because I've just drunk loads of water.
00:12Making friends with the local wildlife.
00:14And we're heading to...
00:15Jesus Christ!
00:18And stating the obvious.
00:19It's a bit folly.
00:23And basically just having a really lovely time.
00:26Oh, I hate this, it's so awful.
00:28You know the drill, on The Detour, we're going to take a deep dive into the latest episode of Race
00:32Across the World.
00:33We're going to hear some travel tales and fails from our wonderful guests.
00:36And right at the end of the show, we've got an extra special exclusive clip of the next episode of
00:41Race.
00:41So you're ahead of the pack, can you believe that?
00:44Alright, so turn that head torch onto full beam like I would.
00:47Hop into that James Bond style speedboat and join us for Race Across the World, The Detour.
00:52Woo-hoo-hoo!
00:56As always, we'll have some fantastic guests joining us on the pod.
00:59But who has signed the book this week?
01:01It's presenter Scarlett Moffat.
01:03Woo-hoo-hoo!
01:05Comedian and social media host of SNL UK, Jake Bardwaj.
01:08Woo-hoo!
01:10And now it's time to say hello again to our resident travel expert.
01:13He's visited 92 countries in the world, which is more than I knew existed.
01:17It's Alfie Watts!
01:18Woo-hoo!
01:20Tyler, good to see you again.
01:21Yeah, good to see you, mate.
01:22This is going well, mate, isn't it?
01:22This is going well.
01:23This is going well.
01:24I mean, yeah, the race is going well.
01:26You're doing well.
01:27Everyone's doing well.
01:27Feels like it's not going well.
01:29Feels like the sort of thing you'd say when things really aren't going well.
01:32This is going well, isn't it?
01:33This is going well.
01:34I mean, you've been to 92 countries out of all of those.
01:36Which was your favourite?
01:38The Seychelles.
01:39When you see the beaches, you'll understand.
01:41That's your honeymoon destination, mate.
01:43This is why it's here.
01:45This is why Alfie's here.
01:46This is anyone's honeymoon destination, the Seychelles.
01:48Okay, fine.
01:49You've sold it to me, mate.
01:50You've absolutely sold it to me.
01:52Anyway, towards the end of the episode, I'll be using my travel expertise to share with
01:57you my optimal route for leg three of race across the world with all the best detours
02:00included.
02:01Now, before I reveal anything else, if you're still wandering around Istanbul's Grand Bazaar
02:07and you haven't yet reached the next checkpoint of Helfetti, then stop, all right?
02:11Go and watch the third leg of Race Across the World Series 6 on iPlayer and then just
02:15come right back here.
02:16Another intense ending, and you know Harrison's locked in when he's got his head torch on full
02:20beam, right?
02:20It worked as well.
02:21Him and Katie were first yet again, but more importantly, poor Pooja and Roshni were last.
02:26So that eliminated them from the race, right?
02:28I feel like they've really taken a moment on the show to enjoy race without the race.
02:33They worked at the Turtle Sanctuary on their birthday.
02:37Yeah.
02:37That was really sweet.
02:38It was sweet.
02:39How important is it to take those moments out of the race?
02:42Do you know what I mean?
02:43Like, stop racing for a second, let's go and make an experience.
02:45The sea turtles, I find, they're so needy.
02:49Tortoises, I can get on board with.
02:51They get on with it, slow and steady, we'll win the race.
02:53But sea turtles, can't be doing with it.
02:55So I think the birthday thing as well put a lot of pressure on them.
02:58Well, I think for her, especially being a doctor, and you can see how passionate she
03:02is about helping and caring people, and she really gets a lot back from that.
03:06So I think for her, that was the best way to spend her birthday.
03:10Like, that was topping up her glass, wasn't it?
03:13That she got to help all the little turtles.
03:15I thought it was cute.
03:17And it's core memories, right?
03:18Yeah.
03:18It's completely different for each individual person, isn't it?
03:21For her, she's got this caring side.
03:23She wants to look after the turtles.
03:24Mark loves looking at a monastery.
03:26He gets to do that sort of thing.
03:28Harrison likes a budget.
03:30He does that sort of thing.
03:31Spreadsheets go up.
03:31It's whatever sort of, I don't know, it enhances your own experience, I guess.
03:35Joe and Kush, right?
03:36They have, like, absolutely made a punt up the leaderboard.
03:40Yeah.
03:40Kush, in particular, would not take his foot off the gas at all.
03:44Have they got the right mentality going into this leg now?
03:47Do you reckon they've learned their lesson?
03:49I think so.
03:50Do you know what?
03:50I think they've grown up.
03:52Yeah.
03:52Actually, they stand a chance of winning.
03:54I think they've taken it a bit more serious now.
03:57You know, they've stopped giving out the Instagram handle.
04:01That's a flex.
04:02That is jokes, by the way.
04:03And I think they've went, we could win this.
04:06And, yeah, I think they'll grow a lot in confidence.
04:09Like, I don't know.
04:10I feel like, maybe this is the mammoners, but I feel very proud when I watch them.
04:14Like, I'm like, oh, yes, go on, boys.
04:16You can do it.
04:17They really want it.
04:18They really, really want it, which I think is really lovely.
04:20They sort of decided, we're going to spend the money on the taxis now.
04:23That is it.
04:24That is our get out of jail free card.
04:26Get a taxi.
04:26And I was thinking, it's not really a get out of jail free card, because you spent quite
04:29a lot of money on taxis.
04:31That's it.
04:31But they went for it.
04:32So it can be a lifeline, but taxis during the race, Alf, really, that's Benny?
04:37Yeah, they had to do it.
04:39We spoke about this last week.
04:40They had to do it.
04:43£216 on that taxi to Gaziantep, which is an enormous amount of money.
04:47Taxis traveling in general are the most expensive way to do things.
04:51I mean, ways that you can kind of mitigate that are by kind of booking them in advance,
04:54which obviously, you know, is great for the people at home, not so helpful for the people
04:57on the race, because they can't book them in advance.
04:59The other thing is always checking what kind of mobile taxi apps are available in the countries,
05:03because they very often have much cheaper rates, and basically, well, that's what Joe
05:07and Cush did.
05:08They just basically asked the local, like, we need a taxi here in the morning, and we
05:11are going to go as far as possible.
05:12I think that decision is going to be great now, but I think it's going to be really costly
05:18later down the line.
05:19But what's that the difference between them being in and out?
05:21Like, I mean, if they hadn't done that, they'd be gone.
05:23Well, it's interesting, isn't it?
05:24Because Pooja and Moshini were 12 hours behind, so you wonder, would they have had 12 hours
05:28of leeway?
05:29Had they have taken a bus?
05:30They're probably looking at that tonight themselves going, oh.
05:33But they didn't have that info at the time.
05:36They just had to move as quickly as possible.
05:37They're going to have to just get loads of jobs, aren't they?
05:39Yeah, they're going to have to work.
05:41But their problem is going to be is that as they get further into the other legs, the
05:45currency of the other countries is going to go down, so they might work for four hours,
05:48but that might only top up their budget by £15, because of, like, the local working
05:52hourly rate.
05:53So I looked at that, and I was like, they're going to stay in, but I don't know if they'll
05:57make it to the end.
05:58Yeah, fair.
05:58Do you know what?
05:59If I ever did this show, I always thought I'd want to do it with my partner, but I want
06:02to do it
06:02with you.
06:04It's an honour of a lifetime.
06:06I'd love to do everything with you.
06:07I feel like I can.
06:08Can you just plan my life?
06:10Right, so another pair we need to talk about is Mark and Margot.
06:12Scarlett, there was one moment where they're on the checkpoint run.
06:16They're on the dash, yeah?
06:17And then Margot's like, let's just get a taxi, like, five minutes up the hill.
06:20Yeah?
06:21Could they be dark horses in this race with that mentality?
06:25I mean, I think, I think they're the underdogs.
06:29They've got wisdom behind them.
06:31They've got life experience.
06:33And I just think, I don't know, they're the ones to be.
06:36Margot's a bit of a free spirit, isn't she?
06:37Oh, yeah, I love her.
06:38I bet she would be epic on a night out.
06:40I would love to just go on a night out with her.
06:43I think she'd be men.
06:45But no, I think they're the underdogs, definitely.
06:49Yeah, I agree.
06:50Well, I must be right.
06:52If Alfie says it, I'm probably not.
06:54Let's find out what he thinks first,
06:56and then I'll work out what my answer is, I think.
06:58I'm banking on Alfie's opinion over it.
07:00Andrew and Molly basically maintain their place in the race,
07:03coming in fourth.
07:03They're hanging in there.
07:04But, Jake, what more could they do
07:05to sort of get back in amongst the pack?
07:07Andrew just loves sort of stepping outside his front door.
07:11Yeah, he's very excited.
07:12And I think fair play.
07:13He's doing race across the world.
07:14If he wants to step outside and look at every single thing and enjoy it,
07:17yeah, I think go for it.
07:18Why not?
07:19I'm not sure you're going to be able to change that attitude from him.
07:21He's just enjoying every single thing he sees,
07:23and that's fair enough, isn't it?
07:24But he's doing it with his daughter.
07:26Yeah.
07:26And I just think it's so cute.
07:28Like, imagine the memories.
07:30Like, it's not very often we get to spend that much time
07:33with our parents anyway.
07:34So, like, doing that journey, like,
07:36I just think you can tell every second
07:38he's just, like, soaking it all up.
07:41And then finally we've got Katie and Harrison.
07:43They're managing to find that perfect mix
07:45of between, like, speed and then just stop for one second
07:48and then carry on with some more speed as well.
07:51I mean, they're doing really well.
07:53They're the most dominant in a race so far.
07:54Alfie, is that going to be the game plan moving forward?
07:57Do they just stay ahead whilst they're ahead?
07:59If they're going to want to kind of start going off the beaten track,
08:02then now that the elimination's out of the way,
08:04the next two legs is the time to do it.
08:06I've always said this about race across the world.
08:07I think leading is harder than chasing.
08:09100%.
08:09Because you're going to be watching, you know,
08:11the lead has already been cut down by seven hours.
08:13So they're going to be bearing that in mind.
08:15People are going to be hot on their heels.
08:17You don't want to be first every single leg
08:19and have not enjoyed it.
08:20I don't know.
08:20And not enjoyed it.
08:21I think Harrison would quite,
08:22he quite likes not enjoying stuff, doesn't he?
08:24It does seem to me as kind of...
08:25He even said, like,
08:26I bloody love being miserable.
08:29Give me a custard cream.
08:31That's his bit of joy right there.
08:33They're such a great team.
08:34They really balance each other out.
08:36And it just, it brings her so much joy
08:38the moment that he just sort of...
08:41Let's go of the lead a little bit
08:43and just says, do you know what?
08:44Okay, we will stop and just enjoy a little...
08:46It was really sweet when she just said,
08:48just have some tzatziki.
08:51Let's unpack the route from tonight's episode.
08:53The third leg saw our racers travel
08:55from one side of Turkey to the other.
08:59From Turkey's European edge
09:01to its far south-eastern frontier,
09:03teams must cross almost the entire breadth
09:06of the country to reach Halfeti.
09:10Once a thriving Assyrian settlement,
09:13now submerged beneath the famous Euphrates River,
09:16following the construction of the Birajik Dam
09:18in the year 2000.
09:21A lone minaret pierces the turquoise waters,
09:25a haunting reminder of what was lost,
09:27beneath a limestone gorge that endures.
09:31Right, Alpha, you got your clipboard?
09:33I do.
09:34Give us your knowledge.
09:35Well, firstly, what a fantastic checkpoint
09:37because I genuinely never heard of this place,
09:40Halfeti, in my life.
09:41Wow, that's saying something.
09:42So I did have to do some research.
09:44The town's history actually goes back to 855 BC.
09:48It's now divided basically in two
09:50into the old town and the new town of Halfeti.
09:53The divide happened after 2000,
09:55after a flood because of the building
09:57and the construction of the Birajik Dam.
09:59There is an urban legend,
10:00which is that it's the only place on earth
10:02where you can find a black rose.
10:03Black rose.
10:04Interesting.
10:05Oh, wow.
10:05That's a good urban legend.
10:07Yeah.
10:07Now, one of my favourite moments in that episode
10:10was the moment that Joe and Kush
10:12basically just stopped and was like,
10:13oh, it's a basketball call.
10:14Sweet.
10:153.9.
10:15One swish.
10:16Yeah?
10:17That was the moment.
10:18It is important when you're off the beating track,
10:20when you're a bit stressed out,
10:21to do something that reconnects you with back home.
10:24And I think it's fair to say,
10:25like, travelling really does force you
10:27to break down your barriers, right?
10:29So for Joe and Kush,
10:31you reckon that basketball was the reconnection
10:32that they needed?
10:33Yeah, because it just reminded them
10:34of the simplicity of home, doesn't it?
10:37Like, because I think,
10:38like, I can imagine it being really stressful.
10:41Like, even though they're having such a good time,
10:43they are in a race,
10:44they're having to plan everything.
10:46You're not having your phone.
10:47I think especially at their age,
10:49like, you're just used to being able
10:51to do everything on your phone.
10:52Do you know what I mean?
10:53So I think it was nice
10:54that they just took a little moment.
10:56I said that as if I'm a good old person, didn't I?
10:58No, no, no.
10:58I was just agreeing with you
10:59because I was just thinking, like,
11:01he missed his phone so much.
11:03He was like,
11:03can't I just do Instagram on a notepad?
11:05Oh, yeah.
11:06Can I just sort of do an analogue version of it, maybe?
11:09Yeah.
11:09Yeah.
11:09With your usernames there.
11:11Mark and Margot,
11:12I mean, their relationship is really blossoming right now.
11:16How nice is it to see
11:18that developing friendship going on on screen?
11:20I feel like both their eyes spark up
11:22when they find out something new about each other.
11:25And I just think it's so beautiful.
11:27And I suppose that's the thing
11:28when we take away all the technology
11:31and you're doing, you know,
11:33you're just having to walk around
11:34and sit on buses for, like, 14 hours.
11:37Because all you can do is talk.
11:39Do you know what I mean?
11:40Yeah.
11:40And you can see that.
11:40They've just learned so much about each of them.
11:43It's lovely to watch, isn't it?
11:44They just genuinely want the best for each other as well.
11:46It makes me want to cry.
11:47There's nothing clouding that.
11:50No, because his story, I mean, it's his life, isn't it?
11:53Like, and just losing his wife, like, I don't know.
11:56You can just see that this means everything.
11:59Like, I feel like he's just...
12:01And she wants the world for him.
12:02Yeah.
12:03She's slightly pushy with the,
12:05I thought, let's,
12:06we don't need to call everything a bromance, I would say.
12:08Do you know what I mean?
12:09Just forcing those connections and relationships over there.
12:12Is that intense?
12:13I mean, Mark is just,
12:14he's like the LeBron James
12:16when it comes to knowledge of the Silk Road, right?
12:18Yeah.
12:19So speaking of that, Alfie,
12:20what have you got for us on the historicals right there, mate?
12:23Not quite as much as Mark,
12:25but basically the Silk Road was essentially
12:28a long, long trail of roads
12:30that was set up in the 2nd century BC
12:32and functioned until the 15th century AD.
12:35And it was basically just a massive trade route.
12:37Obviously, Europe and Asia are linked by Takia
12:39and this just connected all of the Eastern to Western trade.
12:43Historians do say the Silk Route
12:44instead of the Silk Road.
12:46Probably more accurate
12:47because there are both land and sea routes.
12:49Less potholes.
12:50But, yeah, indeed.
12:52Mainly used by horses.
12:53So maybe potholes are not such an impact.
12:57But one thing our racers are going to see
12:59is a lot more of the Silk Road,
13:02particularly as they head in towards Central Asia.
13:04It is a fascinating part of the world.
13:06Because that whole,
13:07that Far East would have just had
13:09so little knowledge about it
13:11other than just what produce arrives
13:13suddenly from nowhere to the Western world.
13:15You can't really overestimate
13:18just how, like, incredible it was
13:19that during times where they had nothing,
13:21they were managing to transport
13:22so much stuff so far.
13:25Now for some one-star reviews.
13:27The rules are simple, guys.
13:28So I'm going to read out
13:29some genuine one-star reviews
13:31from famous landmarks
13:32and you just have to basically guess
13:33what they're talking about.
13:34Okay?
13:35Right, so here's the first one.
13:36There are many more places
13:39which are much older
13:40and carry much more archaeological importance.
13:44That's a bit harsh, isn't it?
13:45It's really harsh.
13:46It's one-star reviews.
13:46Goddy me.
13:48You've made the effort to go there
13:49just to write a review of that.
13:50Yeah, one-star, mate.
13:52The second clue.
13:53I'm surprised it was declared by UNESCO
13:55as a heritage site.
13:56It's only 2,000 years old.
13:57Oh, gosh, okay.
13:59Only 2,000.
14:00If it was three, you'd know it.
14:00So it's definitely in Turkey.
14:02Yeah, yeah.
14:02I'm just going to go through
14:03my list of famous landmarks in Turkey.
14:05Nice, mate.
14:06Yeah, sweet.
14:06That'll do it.
14:07When you go to Tikia,
14:08what's the one thing you tick off the list?
14:10The ancient city of Ephesus.
14:12Oh, gosh.
14:13I thought it was Westfield Stratford.
14:16Great place, mate.
14:17Great place.
14:17Don't knock it.
14:18Don't knock it.
14:19Right, so these ones are a bit further afield.
14:20Here's the second review.
14:21Frankly, this magnificent Iron Lady
14:24should be left to serve its true purpose.
14:26Iron Lady.
14:28Is it the Statue of Liberty?
14:29I don't know if she's made out of iron.
14:30Is it Molly Malone in Dublin?
14:33She's like it, isn't she?
14:34It's not Molly Malone.
14:34Is that your final answer?
14:35Yeah, are you locking that in?
14:37Is it one more time, Tyler?
14:38Here's another little clue,
14:39another little clue just to add into the mix, right?
14:40An exquisite visual trinket.
14:42Its beauty is best absorbed from afar.
14:45Is it the Eiffel Tower?
14:47Oh, yeah.
14:47That's what I'd have said.
14:48Is it?
14:49The Eiffel Tower.
14:49Time's up.
14:50Come on.
14:51Come on.
14:52Next one.
14:53The thing is tiny.
14:54Even the widest part is only like 30 feet across.
14:57Jake.
14:59Who's reviewed me?
15:00Okay.
15:01I looked straight at you there, mate.
15:03I was like...
15:04It was low-hanging fruit.
15:05Another review.
15:10So what is it?
15:11One more time.
15:12It is basically invisible from space.
15:14There's an additional clue.
15:15Oh, I know this.
15:16Oh, is it the Great Wall of China?
15:18Come on.
15:18Congratulations.
15:21Can the right people watching get me and Scarlet on Pointless together?
15:24Because I think we're making a good team.
15:26We would make a good team for that.
15:28It's never been called the Big Wall of China, though, has it?
15:30It was just the Great Wall of China.
15:31Yeah.
15:32It's sort of just they've written it as Great Wall of China.
15:34Yeah.
15:35That's great.
15:36That's it.
15:37Okay, next up.
15:38A few small, ruthless buildings of extreme simplicity
15:41that will only excite specialised archaeologists.
15:45Is it Stonehenge?
15:46Got to be, hasn't it?
15:47No.
15:48Okay.
15:48Sorry.
15:49I'm not on your side.
15:50I'm over here.
15:51There is not a single temple, palace, building or structure
15:55that stands out from a mediocre and monotonous rest.
15:58That narrows it down.
16:00Tie over in the clues.
16:01People are so miserable.
16:02Machu Picchu.
16:03Oh, my days!
16:05Oh, my God.
16:07You're having a blinder.
16:08Is it really?
16:09Did you read my iPad before we started?
16:11Is it really?
16:11Yes, it is.
16:13I knew it was worth coming to this.
16:14I knew it was worth coming to this today.
16:16That was good, though.
16:16Three out of four.
16:17No, maybe it's just that we're really intelligent.
16:20We're just really intelligent, yeah.
16:21Yeah.
16:21Right, Jake, Scarlett, thank you so much for playing.
16:23And for all of you at home, if you visited a famous landmark abroad
16:26and it just doesn't quite live up to the expectations
16:28and you want to rant about it, then let us know on WhatsApp, right?
16:32Was the Big Apple more like a mouldy granny smith, yeah?
16:35Just message us on 08487387.
16:39Now to return to episode three, Mark and Margot had a grand old time working in a restaurant
16:44in Ankara and I think Mark found a new best mate.
16:47I didn't realise that making a salad was so complicated.
16:51It is the most difficult job in the kitchen.
16:54By myself, it's quite difficult to have a variety.
16:58I cook something that will last me three days.
17:01Because I'm retired.
17:02I've stopped working.
17:03You're now.
17:04Yes, yes.
17:06How old are you?
17:0766.
17:0866.
17:10How's it going, Mark?
17:13He's full of his bromance.
17:15How's it going, Mark?
17:16Brilliant.
17:17Are you enjoying yourself?
17:18Yes, I am.
17:19Is that salad ready yet?
17:20It's on its way.
17:21It's on its way.
17:22So at the start of the race, I feel like Mark was the introverted one.
17:25Margot was kind of like the free spirit.
17:27I feel like the roles are reversing a little bit the longer that the race goes on.
17:32How do you think the race is changing these two in that respect?
17:35Well, I think Mark's just come out of his shell.
17:37I feel like he's getting more confident.
17:39And I feel like that is because of Margot.
17:41Because I think she gives him the space to like, do you know what I mean?
17:45To grow.
17:46Like, look how happy he is.
17:47He said making a salad was brilliant.
17:49Yeah.
17:50Like, to be him.
17:51Do you know what I mean?
17:51He's just so happy.
17:53He's a good salad.
17:53At the little things.
17:54And I just think like, yes, I know it was a very short exchange of asking for the age that
18:00he likes football.
18:01But I think for him, that is out of his comfort zone.
18:03I mean, that's what travelling does.
18:04You're a huge fan of travelling, aren't you?
18:06Oh, I love travelling.
18:07Yeah.
18:07But mine's more, mine isn't really like.
18:09So the people that you meet.
18:09Yeah, like, mine's not like backpack travelling.
18:11Oh, no.
18:11Mine was like seasons abroad selling shots.
18:14Nice.
18:15You was a shot girl many movies ago, aren't you?
18:17Yeah, like, so I did like Magaluf, Ibiza, Miami.
18:20Are you one of those people when I'm walking down Tenerife Strip just trying to get to where I need
18:25to go?
18:25They're like, oh, come into my bar.
18:27No, I wasn't.
18:27I literally just sold shots.
18:29And half my tray would be water.
18:30And half my tray would be vodka.
18:32So then I'd say to them, oh, you're buying me one as well?
18:34And it would be water.
18:35So I'd get double the profits.
18:37Wow.
18:37Sorry.
18:39Travel hack.
18:40Travel hack.
18:41Don't buy from the shop.
18:42I didn't really understand the economics of that anyway.
18:44You're walking past and someone will be like, three shots, bottle of spirits, fishbowl, two euro.
18:48How?
18:50How?
18:50Just in terms of liquid, that's a lot.
18:52But I think for me, because I went, like, I was only 18 when I first went travelling.
18:57Obviously.
18:58It was just like the people that you met, like, I grew so much in confidence because I'd literally get
19:03on a plane, get on my little flight, not knowing anyone.
19:06Yeah.
19:07It's a confidence grow up.
19:08Yeah.
19:09And that's why I recommend...
19:10Travel alone as well.
19:11Like, that's the thing, like, lots of my friends, even though we are fully grown, they wouldn't even get a
19:15train on their own.
19:16It'd be nerve wracking, right?
19:17Which I get, I completely get if it's out of your comfort zone, but I think that's the brilliant thing
19:20that travelling does.
19:22It makes you appreciate your own company.
19:24Like, I can go for, like, food on my own, and some of my friends think that's weird, but I
19:28think I'm mint crag.
19:29Yeah.
19:29Do you know what I mean?
19:30Yeah.
19:31Talking to myself in a restaurant is great crag.
19:34I love it, I think I'm really good company.
19:36I think, I do think that you meet people and they, you see little similarities to your life, but there's
19:43so much difference to your life.
19:44Then suddenly you step out of, I mean, obviously, if you've been going through a really tough time as well,
19:48and you're so in your own world, you suddenly meet these people.
19:51He meets that chef, he's a similar age to him, but he has a completely different life.
19:54Or in the previous episode, he met that amazing woman who had so many similarities in her experience of recent
20:00times, but obviously has lived such a different life.
20:02It makes you step out of that story you've been telling yourself and think that there might be some hope
20:08for happiness outside of it, which I think is really lovely.
20:10You did inter-railing, didn't you?
20:11I did, yeah.
20:12Come on, you were jumping on the trains.
20:14I was jumping on the trains.
20:18I got very overexcited.
20:20I sort of, like, would stick my head out the window thinking, this is bloody brilliant.
20:24Oh my gosh, actually, you're not too brilliant.
20:26Yeah, to do it at any age, but I guess when you're doing it, when you're, like you say, when
20:31you're sort of, like, 19, it just makes you realise, oh my God, there's a whole world out there.
20:35Yeah.
20:36Now, Andrew and Molly, I mean, they were serving up some phallic-looking food, right?
20:41Would you have eaten up?
20:42I mean, I've ate camel balls for a living, do you know what I mean?
20:45So, I personally would, because I like stuff like that, and I think it's important when you go...
20:50What do you mean stuff like that?
20:51Stuff specifically phallic?
20:52Yeah, what?
20:53No, not specifically...
20:54Camel balls.
20:55Oh, yeah, that is actually, I didn't mean, because it's phallic.
20:58I like the phallic thing on there, I like the camel balls, if it's anything like that, I'll put it
21:01in my gob.
21:02No, but I meant, like, when you go to different places, I think it's important, because food is such an
21:09important part of culture in any country.
21:12So, like, I just think, like, most of us, like, that's where we find, well, I find joy from food.
21:17So, like, going to a new place, I always try and, like, find out what their delicacy is, or what
21:22they would recommend, and eat it.
21:23So, I would have ate the phallic thing.
21:25You've got to get stuck in.
21:26I remember, um, I went to...
21:28We took my grandparents to Italy.
21:29No, no, no one ate anything phallic.
21:31I don't think so.
21:33Um, and it ended...
21:35Look, it was quite a touristy spot, but for the sake of taking, like, two late 80-year-olds, you
21:39know, to Italy,
21:40we're outside the Colosseum at a quite, like, touristy place, but we're having pizza, and you can see the Colosseum
21:46there,
21:46and the sun's beaming, and you think, this is amazing.
21:48I see my granddad, he bite into his pizza, and I think, like, what do you think?
21:51And he goes, it's not Domino's.
21:53Yeah.
21:54Um, I think the Italians have slightly forgotten how to make pizza.
21:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:58Um, there's no garlic herb dip, but it's okay.
22:01And you know those wood-fired pizzas are sort of, like, got little sort of, like, crispy bits.
22:04Yeah, on the end.
22:04Burnt.
22:05Burnt.
22:07So he's like, oh, okay, fine.
22:09Uh, but yeah, yeah, food, food can, can hopefully sort of, like, give you new experiences and really immerse you
22:14in the place.
22:15Mark and Andrew got very excited, and they had that, like, whole bonding experience over experiencing new things at an
22:21older age.
22:22Is there anything on your guys' bucket list that you really want to experience before you get older?
22:26Oh, I feel like lords and lords of things.
22:28What's on y'all?
22:29I feel like y'all's would be niche.
22:30Yeah, well, I lived through this show because I have a fear of flying, so I never really go anywhere.
22:37Is that why you was into railing?
22:38That's why I went, well, no, it wasn't too bad back then, but, um, it got worse and worse.
22:43So then I'm like, I lived through this show because I don't really fly anywhere.
22:47I did, so, to fly and then to go far, far, far away would be on the list.
22:51I went, I did a, I did do, like, a, I did a fear of flying course.
22:55Did it work?
22:55How did that go?
22:56Um, so, interesting.
22:58Well, he's still scared, isn't he?
22:59Yeah, he's still not.
22:59I did the Virgin Fear of Flying course, which already isn't a great label to have on you.
23:03Right, virgins, sit down, everyone sit down.
23:05Um, so you're there with all the other fear of flying people.
23:08And they teach you about, like, why it's safe.
23:10And then they say, at the end of the, end of the session, they go, right, everyone up.
23:13We're going to get on a plane.
23:14Everyone's like, what's going on?
23:15I'm thinking, we all knew.
23:16Come on, it's on the brochure.
23:17We all be like, part of the schedule.
23:20Talk, then fly.
23:21So then we go to, um, Gatwick Airport and they, and they, you're sort of walking through and there's,
23:26like, a stick saying, like, virgins over here.
23:28Um, and you get on the plane and it's 200 people who are all terrified of flying,
23:34taking a flight from Gatwick round the Isle of Wight and then coming back.
23:38And as soon as it goes off, it takes off.
23:41You've got 200 people going,
23:44And then you go round the Isle of Wight and everyone's going,
23:47And then it has to come back down the other way to get back.
23:49And everyone's going,
23:50And the queue to the toilet is just, like, rammed.
23:52Because everyone's in the aisle going, bang, bang, bang.
23:54I want personal space.
23:55I want to be in the toilet.
23:56I need personal space.
23:57And there's a guy next to me who's, like, 80.
23:58And I think, he's all right.
23:59Because he's, like, can't help you in control.
24:00And he's going, it's the same.
24:01It's always, it's the same as it always is.
24:03And in that moment, I thought, these lot are nuts.
24:06And I was cured.
24:07And I was fine.
24:08And then I started flying more.
24:11And now I'm actually,
24:12It was seeing them that made me be able to fly.
24:15So now I can do short flights.
24:16But on my bucket list is to do longer and longer flights, yeah.
24:20Now, up next is a part of the show
24:21where we hear some of your dodgiest holiday tales,
24:24your weirdest travel tips,
24:25as well as any dilemmas that you might have.
24:27Yeah, has your stag got out of hand
24:29and now you've lost the groom to be in Latvia?
24:31It happens.
24:32WhatsApp us on 08000 487 387
24:35and we'll get you through it.
24:36Okay, first up, we have Cameron.
24:39Hi, I'm Cam.
24:40I'm a pilot.
24:40And I've been asked to give you a few top tips
24:42from an aviation perspective on travel.
24:45Firstly, when you bring chocolates and sweets onto the airplane,
24:48it doesn't get you an upgrade,
24:50especially if the captain doesn't get to see any of them.
24:53Secondly, don't change into your pyjamas and your flip-flops.
24:56That's not for climbing over burning wreckage
24:58on takeoff and on landing.
24:59By all means, do it in the cruise.
25:01It's because if you end up having to evacuate the airplane
25:04or get off the airplane on a cold winter's day
25:06somewhere in North America,
25:08you're going to be cold.
25:10Don't do it.
25:11When you go to the hotel,
25:12you're going to have one of these.
25:13Use it to keep your curtains closed.
25:15That keeps it dark
25:16when you're trying to get into the local time zones.
25:18Always carry earplugs,
25:20always have a routine,
25:21always put the same things in the same place when you travel.
25:23And what I'd like to do
25:24is put a shoe in my safe.
25:26If I find myself hopping to the airport the following day,
25:29it means I've left my passport and anything else
25:32that's important to me in the safe.
25:34Happy travels.
25:36That one's great.
25:37What I would say...
25:39I would say he's put me off travelling.
25:41I was like, imagine getting to, like,
25:44the check-in desk on the return trip.
25:46And you're just like,
25:47oh, my shoe.
25:48I ain't got the passports, have I?
25:50I haven't got the passports over here.
25:52Sorry, I think I've left for the safe.
25:53Also, he must have tiny feet
25:54because I don't think my shoes would fit in a safe.
25:56Sorry, where's he staying?
25:58Cameron, we've got questions.
25:59Are they safe for picking up for shoes?
26:01Right, and how about this one?
26:02We've got former racer Eamon.
26:04Hi, the Detour team.
26:06My name's Eamon Chowdhury
26:07and I'm from the Seasons 2 race across the world.
26:10Legend.
26:10My question to you guys is,
26:12we all know the seven wonders of the world,
26:15but what is your eighth wonder and why?
26:18I'm going to say the Angel of the North.
26:21That's actually...
26:22That's good.
26:23I've run around that.
26:24Yeah, have you?
26:24Yeah, I've done a little run up there.
26:25It's like, it is beautiful
26:27and I don't think it's officially a wonder of the world,
26:30but it should be.
26:31Yeah, I like that you thought you had to check.
26:33Is it one of them?
26:34Is it...
26:35No, no, no.
26:36And you know you're close to the Metrol Centre
26:38when you see it
26:39and it's like the best place for shopping.
26:42That's your reference point.
26:42I've never seen the Angel of the North in real life.
26:44Is it massive?
26:45I am massive.
26:46Yeah, it's quite big-like.
26:48It's quite girthy.
26:50I don't know why you chose that word.
26:52I'm sorry.
26:53It's a girthy angel, that one.
26:55It's a girthy angel up north.
26:58I was giving your eye contact, sorry.
27:01It's been quite a girthy episode, to be honest, it is.
27:04It has.
27:05I mean, for somebody that's actually travelled to 92 countries,
27:08Alfie, where would you say is the eighth wonder of the world?
27:10My answer's going to disappoint you.
27:11I'm going to say St Paul's Cathedral.
27:13Oh.
27:14A fan of St Christopher Wren in the building.
27:17Now we're talking.
27:18I don't know what it is.
27:19I love St Paul, like, at night time,
27:22walking through London.
27:23I love St Paul's Cathedral.
27:25It's such a nerdy thing to say,
27:27but London is my favourite city on earth.
27:28All that money wasted on those 92 countries.
27:30I know.
27:30And it's still just a £10 link away.
27:34I'm just setting myself all the trouble.
27:35St Paul's is beautiful.
27:36And also, because you know that it's been there,
27:39whilst everything around it has changed so much,
27:41you suddenly look at it in the context of all these glass buildings,
27:43and you're, like, transported to a different...
27:44It always stands out.
27:45I don't know why.
27:45Is this Sagrada Familia one of the wonders?
27:49That's so beautiful to look at.
27:51You had that locked in there, ready to come out.
27:53You was waiting for that money.
27:54All I could think of was Smokey Joe's,
27:55the local nightclub in Maidenhead.
27:57That's not going to be a wonder.
27:58Because I did always think it was amazing
28:00how they play Mr Brightside four times in a night,
28:02and people would still keep going.
28:03Like, it's brilliant.
28:03Keep going.
28:05It's a great song, mate.
28:06It's like a band, Mr Brightside,
28:07every five minutes.
28:08So, massive thank you to those of you who sent videos in.
28:11And if you've got a travel tail fail
28:12or a hack that you'd love to share with us,
28:14then please do.
28:15Just WhatsApp us on 08000 487 387.
28:18And if you think you have what it takes
28:20to race across the world,
28:21then head to bbc.co.uk forward slash take part
28:24to apply for the next series.
28:26Alfie, it's time, my friend.
28:28Now is your chance to reveal to us
28:30your optimal route for leg free
28:31of Race Across the World Series 6.
28:33You're going Istanbul to Halfeti.
28:35Your race starts now.
28:36Right.
28:37It's elimination leg time,
28:38so we need to balance this perfectly.
28:40You want the views,
28:41but you've got to keep one eye
28:42over your shoulder at all times.
28:44Now, normally, you'd think inland is faster,
28:47better connected, et cetera,
28:48but probably not here.
28:49Istanbul is one of the best connected cities
28:51on the planet.
28:52Thousands of buses leave every day
28:53and you can board them
28:54to over 20 different countries.
28:56So wherever you want to go,
28:57you're not short of options.
28:59I'm still heading south towards the Mediterranean,
29:01but we're going to be moving smart.
29:02Starting with an overnight bus to Denizli
29:04takes about 10 hours
29:06for between 20 and 30 quid.
29:08And this is a big play.
29:09You're going to be travelling whilst you sleep,
29:10saving that night's accommodation
29:12and arriving early.
29:13Tick, tick, tick.
29:14It's the kind of move that keeps you in the race.
29:16Get in and freshen up
29:17because it's a quick turnaround.
29:18You're going to shuttle straight up to Pamukale.
29:20These run every 20 minutes
29:22and this is your one proper moment
29:24to take it all in.
29:25Then it's straight back on the shuttle
29:26to Denizli and back into race mode.
29:29Your next stop is Antalya.
29:30It's stunning.
29:31Mediterranean coastline,
29:32an old town,
29:33loads going on,
29:34but this is where people get caught out.
29:36It's very easy to slow down here,
29:38start sunbathing,
29:39but don't keep moving.
29:41It's an elimination leg
29:42and we're into the business end.
29:43Long bus to Gaziantep,
29:45which will be 20 to 25 quid.
29:46And at this point,
29:47you've just got to keep moving.
29:48You're on the final stretch,
29:50splash on that taxi
29:50and this will set you back.
29:52But staying in the race at this stage
29:54is priceless.
29:55No mistakes,
29:56no over budgeting.
29:56And that's coming from me,
29:58the guy that does holidays for a hundred pounds,
30:00because this is a route
30:01that gives you something incredible,
30:02but only if you stay disciplined.
30:05After all,
30:05that Turkish lira
30:06is no good if you're out.
30:08Alfie, what's everybody?
30:09Unbelievable.
30:10You smash that park every time.
30:12Really, really good.
30:13Elimination leg, mate.
30:14You've got to keep track.
30:15That's it.
30:16That's the game plan.
30:17Right,
30:17before we leave
30:18our Checkpoint Hotel
30:19for another week,
30:20it's the moment in the show
30:21where I get to bring you
30:21a sneak peek
30:22of the next episode
30:23of Race Across the World.
30:24You're not going to get this
30:25anywhere else.
30:26Are you impressed?
30:26Yeah, I'm impressed.
30:27Very impressed.
30:27You should be.
30:28And it seems
30:29like Mark and Margot
30:30are about to have
30:31a very tricky time.
30:32Enjoy.
30:33Just 200 kilometres
30:35shy of the Checkpoint,
30:36the progress
30:37is put on hold.
30:39How are you feeling?
30:40I'm not thinking
30:40you've been a muscle in head.
30:42No, okay.
30:42You're the priority.
30:43Even if we lose,
30:44like, you know, hours.
30:45Yeah, exactly.
30:46No.
30:47There's no point in me
30:47sitting in the hotel
30:48while you're ill, is there?
30:49So you're getting out?
30:50Yeah.
30:51I've got to get out
30:51and experience this place.
30:53Do you want to sit
30:54with money with you?
30:54Yes.
30:55Oh.
30:57I might feel better later,
30:58so.
30:58I'll draw these curtains
30:59for you,
30:59let you have a little
31:00more rest.
31:01All right.
31:02Take care.
31:05We came here mainly
31:06al-katsiki for Mark,
31:09but now it's going
31:09to be Margot's day.
31:11I am sorry Mark's sick.
31:13It's disappointing
31:14in race terms,
31:15and I do fear
31:16we're going to be
31:17trailing in fourth place.
31:19Not a lot we can do
31:20about it,
31:21so I'm not going
31:21to get upset about it.
31:22I'm just going to go
31:23and eat some dumplings
31:24and drink some wine,
31:24because if you can't
31:25do anything about it,
31:26you've just got to
31:27live your best life.
31:27Yeah.
31:28Wow.
31:29It didn't look like
31:29there was any danger
31:30of her getting upset
31:31about it.
31:32It's not like
31:32she had to convince
31:33herself and pull
31:33herself together,
31:34look, don't get
31:34upset about it, Jim.
31:36Yeah, the fact she's
31:36named the whole day
31:37after herself,
31:37it's Margot Day.
31:38It's Margot Day.
31:40It's Margot Day.
