00:00This time on Motorway Patrol, this woman is looking to be involved in a crash.
00:06Stop. You need to send it to pedestrian.
00:09I don't know about that. I have to go there. Sorry for that.
00:12Yeah, this is a motorway.
00:13This man's just had one.
00:15You seem a little bit spaced out.
00:17And this driver's getting smashed right now.
00:20Get out of the car. You're under arrest for assault.
00:36If there's a worse time to have a crash on New Zealand's busiest stretch of motorway,
00:42then Constable Adrian Bentley would like to know about it.
00:468am, a Corolla changed lanes at speed and hit a stationary Mitsubishi,
00:52as evidenced by this gentleman collecting coins.
00:56I was just trying to make a few dogs to get myself a cup of coffee,
01:00and next thing I heard was bang, then a bang,
01:03and then the grey car hit that white one and just dropped dead on an angle.
01:08I'll just get you to stay there, just because you've got oil everywhere, OK?
01:11Are you OK? I see some blood.
01:13Yeah, no, I've got a doctor deployed.
01:15Yeah, your car's not going anywhere, unfortunately.
01:18The elderly man's doctor will have to see someone else
01:21as Adrian moves to the other affected party.
01:24Alright, ma'am, your car is damaged beyond the point it's going to go.
01:28Your left rear wheel is broken.
01:31Yes, driving towards the infamous Green Lane roundabout,
01:35and an elderly man hurtled into me, going about 30km from another lane.
01:43I thought, oh no, because I've only just got my car back from somebody else going into the back of
01:49me yesterday.
01:50This is the third time in 18 months.
01:53That's one crash every six months.
01:56Thank goodness she's not a stock exchange.
01:59Meanwhile, the driver who hit her is being prized out of his car like it's a tin of sardines.
02:05You got anything in your car, an old rag or anything?
02:08Get your feet on there.
02:09No, I don't.
02:10Stand on that for me.
02:12Complete with smelly oil.
02:16So, how did the driver hit the woman's car?
02:19It turns out, he doesn't seem to know himself.
02:22Can you tell me how I was going straight ahead, how I hit her in this lane?
02:30Yeah, well, from the looks of it, based on witness statements and the evidence I've got in front of me,
02:38she has been stationary in this lane, wanting to turn right,
02:41and you have driven into her lane, crashing into her.
02:44Into the right lane?
02:46Yeah.
02:46I wasn't going that way.
02:48I was going straight ahead.
02:51That's where all the damage is.
02:52Her car was in the right lane, and your car has crashed into her.
02:57It was in this lane.
02:57Yeah.
02:58Have you got any medical conditions or anything?
03:01No, none.
03:02Okay.
03:04This has been a fairly big impact, I would imagine around 40 to 50 kilometres.
03:09I couldn't have gone that far too.
03:11There's a significant amount of damage on both cars.
03:14But I was crawling.
03:17Something's not adding up here.
03:19He told Adrian earlier he was on his way to a doctor's appointment.
03:23Could there be another reason for the crash hiding in plain sight?
03:28Has anything gone on?
03:29There's no medical conditions?
03:32Okay.
03:33Where's that cut on your hand?
03:34Is that from this?
03:36I don't know.
03:37No.
03:38I'm a little bit concerned about your driving, to be fair.
03:40You seem a little bit spaced out, is probably a polite way of putting it.
03:45Are you sure there's no medication or anything that could be impacting your driving?
03:49No, but I've had that time going to the doctor to get checked out.
03:56With paramedics on the scene, Adrian has them assess the man's immediate condition.
04:01My colleague is here now to take you as well, okay?
04:05Neither he nor the woman in the other car want to see a repeat of today's drama.
04:12So ambulance have just given him a quick once-over.
04:15Then a colleague is going to drop him off to his doctor's, which he was on his way to
04:19anyway for a pre-monthly check-up.
04:22But I'm not entirely satisfied he should be driving.
04:25So I'm going to suspend his license until a doctor says he's fit to drive.
04:29So fortunately for him, he can get that check-up done straight away.
04:34It's off to the doctor for the driver and off to the wrecker's yard for his car and that of
04:39the woman he hit.
04:40We'll jump on this side.
04:41Adrian will drop her home, where she will no doubt consult the local bus timetable.
04:48For that female driver, there's nothing she could have done.
04:51She was stationary in her lane waiting to turn right and she was crashed into from behind.
04:55Members of the public called police and all in all it turned out to be a good result.
04:59Enjoy your day. Bye-bye.
05:07Constable Ali Sandim is rushing to the scene of a motorway road rage incident,
05:12where actual violence is currently happening.
05:16There could be people fighting on one of the off-brames.
05:21I'm strong, JTOP.
05:23So I'm not really too sure, actually.
05:26You're going to fight to survive in the big bad city, but this amateur phone footage is ridiculous.
05:31Come on, man.
05:33Come on.
05:35Come on.
05:35Come on.
05:36F***.
05:36Leave on the f*** alone and get over here.
05:40At the scene, the storm's already blown over.
05:43It seems one vehicle cut the other one off.
05:46Concerned motorists and Hatohone St John staff have stopped to help.
05:51I thought he was just going to yell at him or something.
05:53The next thing I saw was he was reaching in fully.
05:56I could see his body moving.
05:58I had a feeling that he was punching or doing something.
06:01It's covered in blood.
06:03Amazingly, two Hatohone St John staff filmed the incident.
06:08Ali doesn't doubt the veracity.
06:10From this vehicle?
06:13From this vehicle?
06:14Yeah.
06:15Okay.
06:15You guys have it on camera?
06:18Okay.
06:21Okay.
06:22Okay.
06:22You want to press some charges?
06:23Yes, I want to.
06:24Yeah?
06:24Alright.
06:25Okay.
06:25Okay.
06:25He just jumped out of the car and pulled my door out and yelled at me.
06:30Initially, I thought it was okay.
06:32So he said, I'm sorry.
06:33I wasn't aware.
06:34Actually, I cut him off.
06:35And then he started to punch me in the face.
06:37The driver admits fault, but he doesn't accept the mistake should mean a fist to the face.
06:43I tried inside the lens, but it wasn't aware.
06:46Actually, only one lens just coming out of the frame.
06:50And I accidentally cut off the man's car.
06:54And there's no accident happens.
06:56There's no scratch.
06:58I was just cut it in.
06:59Senior Constable Errol Diprose thinks this has gone beyond a simple traffic matter.
07:04So for your information, this is where I stopped and this is where it hit me.
07:09So if he's been lying into you, what we charge him with would be quite serious.
07:13He's been pretty much assaulting you with the intent.
07:16As if to prove the point, the alleged offender is still being unreasonable.
07:22Get out of the car.
07:23You're under arrest for assault.
07:26Get out of the car.
07:34Constable Ali Sandim is attempting to arrest a man filmed assaulting another motorist.
07:40After he cut in front of their car.
07:44I told you you're under arrest for assault because you've just punched him.
07:46Get out of the car.
07:48Oh, turn around.
07:49Turn around.
07:55So what's his side of the story?
07:57I know I had him, but he could easily have caused an accident.
08:03Yeah, I understand that, but you've taken it to another level, yeah?
08:05To the point, you're not even driving that car.
08:08I know, because my wife was driving.
08:11Yeah, yeah.
08:11I can see that, but you've, you know, gone to the effort to jump out while you're on the road,
08:17open his passenger and clock him in the face a couple of times, okay?
08:21That's quite an extreme.
08:25Luckily, the only lasting damage to the victim is bruised pride.
08:30The punch has only broken the skin.
08:32They're both quite shallow, eh?
08:35We're going to play this game, aren't we?
08:36Okay.
08:37Are you going to tell me who you are?
08:39Tell me I had the right.
08:40I'm trying to...
08:40Yeah, you have to provide me your details, though.
08:43I'm not asking...
08:43You said...
08:43You have the right to remain silent if I'm asking you questions, okay?
08:47Questions about the offence.
08:49But you are required to provide me your name and your details.
08:52You said I had the right to remain silent.
08:54Well, you're not being silent right now, are you?
08:56So, what's your first name?
08:57So, I'm...
08:58What's your first name?
08:59I remain silent now.
09:01What's your first name?
09:03So, he was a little bit uncooperative.
09:05We got there in the end.
09:07So, just chuck him in the back of the police car, ask him a couple questions and he's admitted
09:11to it all already.
09:13He just got angry because he's been cut off by the gentleman in the van and was worried
09:18that his wife, who was driving, was going to be hurt and involved in a serious car accident.
09:22So, he's decided to get out and punch him a couple of times through the passenger door
09:28of the gentleman driving the van.
09:30He just pretty much said he got angry and felt like that was the right thing to do.
09:34Check.
09:35The roadside boxer forgot the golden rule of never punching someone wearing glasses.
09:42The victim could easily have lost an eye.
09:45But all he's lost is the lenses.
09:49It's time to restore the motorway to a 2020 situation.
09:54But all the offender is going to see for the next little while is the inside of Auckland
09:59Police Station, while he's processed for today's altercation.
10:04And they've recorded the incident on their mobile phone and we've got, I've got that footage
10:10on my phone and that'll be shown as evidence in court to support the charge.
10:19Constable Angus Mackenzie is making pace down the southern motorway, where a truck and trailer
10:24unit has been involved in a nasty crash with several other cars.
10:30So, we're just heading up to the Princess Street on-ramp or near it, just after it, to back the
10:34guys up.
10:35Just had a report of a five-car nose-to-tail.
10:37It's been reported by JTOP cameras and it sounds pretty serious.
10:40We'll just go see if we can help out, see if we can support the two units on scene already.
10:46Approaching the scene, it's clear to Angus this is a huge mess.
10:50And a lot of motorists are going to be very late home.
10:56The truck driver explains what happened.
10:59I'm in the middle lane heading to work and there's a queue of traffic on the inside lane
11:05and somebody didn't stop.
11:08And right at the last minute he's decided to slam his brakes on and he's coming to my lane
11:12and, yeah, you've probably seen the result up there.
11:15The truckie had a ringside seat and saw this light truck fail to stop and hit his left side.
11:23Starting a chain reaction of write-offs.
11:26Yeah, that's what's caused it.
11:27He's hit me, but it's then done whatever.
11:30Okay, I'm with you.
11:31Yeah, I'm with you.
11:31So he's kind of, yeah.
11:32Is that on the left side?
11:33Yeah.
11:34Easier to get round this way.
11:36Angus needs to know if the big rig itself has sustained enough damage for a heavy tow.
11:42Or if it's good to go.
11:45My opinion is that it will be okay for a short distance.
11:50But I respect that it's his asset.
11:52A lot of money tied up in it, so.
11:54These guys will give me the okay, I guess, aren't they?
11:56We're not road-worthy.
11:57Hey, Ali.
11:58Did you get any impact on your side?
12:00He has just here.
12:00Did I get any? Yeah.
12:02A little bit.
12:03He says there's a little bit of diesel running down the road.
12:07So I'll just have a look at you or something.
12:09Yeah.
12:10After inspection, there's no smoking gun, and the truck can continue to the depot.
12:16It's empty.
12:17Yeah.
12:17Hiya.
12:18But as it's a curtain sider, Angus needs to be sure contents haven't shifted in the shunt.
12:25Firm as a church, this load is secure and undamaged.
12:30We arrived.
12:31This truck itself was probably about 100 metres down from the crash.
12:34Still in lanes, so it's definitely involved.
12:37We've arrived, spoke to the driver, just got his recount.
12:39Had a look at a bit of damage on the front.
12:41Right now, we're just going through a standard check of the vehicle for just ensuring that
12:45he's complying with all his regulation.
12:47He's also reported he's got dash cam footage, so we'll hopefully obtain that as well.
12:50Back at the crash scene, vehicles have been uploaded and the roads returning to normal.
12:55The Greatest Hits footage itself has just been downloaded.
13:01It's crystal clear the light truck caused the crash by not checking the blind spot.
13:07Adrian's keen to show the driver to remove any doubt he is at fault.
13:12So I obtained the dash cam footage from the driver of the truck, his boss.
13:15He was really good, sent it to me and himself.
13:18We viewed it and pretty much corroborated what the other officer was saying.
13:22Basically, the lorry, that little scaffolding truck, has either hasn't seen the traffic ahead
13:26or just tried to make a bit of a quick lane change and has gone straight into the truck.
13:30So yeah, it just shows you this is quite a common spot where traffic does build up.
13:35So unfortunately, it's just one of those, but yeah.
13:37So we're just about to wrap up.
13:38They're just cleaning up this diesel spill from the crash.
13:41It's quite a bit to do.
13:43So they're just going to wrap that up, get rid of that.
13:45The vehicles have gone.
13:46Yeah, it's a good day to be a tow truck operator.
13:49Coming up.
13:50I will not repeat it again.
13:52Sorry for that.
13:53You can be arrested and you get in handcuffs.
14:03Motorways and cyclists don't mix for obvious reasons.
14:06The same goes for pedestrians and this daredevil scooter rider.
14:12Sergeant Jonathan Campbell is going to get this woman off the road before she becomes a statistic.
14:20Stop.
14:22She's on her way to the city and as Sergeant Campbell is about to discover, she was only following instructions
14:28on her phone map.
14:49The scooter rider is clearly oblivious to the fact that she's lucky to be alive.
14:53She could have been flattened on the freeway, but she flat out does not want a fine.
15:00I am just getting late for my job so I don't know about that.
15:04How long have you been in New Zealand for?
15:05Just four months ago.
15:07Four months?
15:08Yeah.
15:08Okay.
15:09Sergeant Campbell needs her details.
15:12Do you have a driver's license?
15:14Please don't find me actually.
15:16I don't know about that.
15:18She won't give her name.
15:20You need to show me your license.
15:22I will not repeat it again.
15:24Sorry for that.
15:25Okay.
15:25If I don't get your details, you can be arrested and you get in handcuffs.
15:29Okay.
15:30So show me the driver's license.
15:32I need to get your name.
15:33Okay.
15:34So just cooperate and it'll be fine.
15:36Please don't find me.
15:38Scooters can't go on the motorway.
15:40So if you set it to pedestrian mode, it'll tell you to go along the main road, not on this.
15:45I really don't know about that.
15:47Drive is not allowed here.
15:49The fine for riding a scooter on the motorway is about 10 times what an Uber would have cost.
15:55As she's a brand new Kiwi, Sergeant Campbell gives her a break.
15:58Yes, I am getting fined.
16:01A written traffic warning.
16:03So you get a letter just saying you're warned not to go on the motorway.
16:06So no fine.
16:06You don't have to pay any money.
16:07Okay.
16:08Okay.
16:08So it's the warning letter.
16:10How I get it?
16:12In the mail.
16:12You get a letter in the mail.
16:14So for next time I can't drive, my driving license is cancelled.
16:20No, no.
16:20That's all fine.
16:21Your driving license is fine.
16:22But you just got to...
16:23What about my job?
16:25Well, your job is your own job.
16:27Nothing to do with me.
16:28Nobody wants to see her lose her job for being late.
16:31So she gets a lift.
16:33But before leaving, Sergeant Campbell contacts the scooter company to come and pick up their
16:38transportation device.
16:41It's a lesson learned.
16:42It's a scary one for you.
16:44But the danger of you being on the motorway is you can get run over.
16:48Yeah, I understand that but really I don't know.
16:51Yep.
16:52Well, you know now and you'd be giving a warning for it.
16:54Okay.
16:54So it's okay.
16:56We just dropped off the female who was riding a scooter along the motorway to her work address.
17:01She's only new to the country and she didn't realize that on the maps, if you don't set
17:06it to a pedestrian mode, it will send you onto the motorway, which is obviously a big
17:11no-no for scooters.
17:12So yeah, if you are ever new to a country and you're walking or cycling somewhere, just
17:18make sure you put it in pedestrian mode, not in vehicle mode.
17:23It's close to Christmas and today motorists are getting the presents of Constable Tristan
17:28Rudden, who's lasering for speeders.
17:35This motorist is going to be seriously unwrapped because Tristan's caught him going over the
17:40limit.
17:41Hello.
17:42Good, how are you?
17:43Good.
17:44Hey, reason I pulled you over today is because you're doing initially 116 but then I locked
17:49it to 114.
17:50Any particular reason?
17:51The song was too exciting.
17:52Hey?
17:53The music was too exciting.
17:54The music was exciting?
17:55It was.
17:56Oh, I love it.
17:57That's all good.
17:58Hey, did you have your license with you?
17:59Yeah, well, I was listening to music and it was just a bit too exciting and I just decided
18:05to speed.
18:05I mean, the lane was open.
18:06I thought I'd put my foot down.
18:08I should have listened to something mellow.
18:11Whitney Houston can have that effect on people.
18:14Next, Tristan spots a driver who's taken the Christmas thing a little too far.
18:19Clearly, night lights are a distraction, even in broad daylight.
18:24We've just driven past a car with Christmas lights all over it.
18:28I mean, tis the season, but.
18:31Hey guys, how are we going?
18:32How are you?
18:33Good, good.
18:34Hey, do you have your license with you?
18:36Oh, perfect.
18:37Hey, the reason I pulled you over is because your car looks dashing, dazzling.
18:43It looks like a Christmas tree.
18:45Christmas spirit, you know?
18:47Well, you know, we can't afford a Christmas tree, so get some lights on the car.
18:52Flashing on the motorway is one thing.
18:54These guys are also unhinged.
18:57Are these attached securely, do you reckon?
19:00Yeah.
19:01Oh, maybe not on the bottom.
19:03Like, I'll give you an A-plus for the effort, so I really don't think it's legal.
19:09So I'll let you guys take it off.
19:12Nobody wants to see other drivers driven to distraction.
19:15The lads accept the fact their lights need to go on a fence, a long drop, or a tree.
19:21We went on TikTok, and we saw a video of it, and we were like, ****, it would be cool,
19:26you know?
19:26And NZ, no one really does this.
19:28So we came with the idea, like, we went to Bunnings, we were like, ****, we'll grab some lights.
19:32So we chucked it all on.
19:34It looked silly in the day, but at night it looked so neat, eh?
19:41Tristan lets the driver go straight home to get his car undressed.
19:45He can guess what mum will be getting from Santa.
19:48Christmas time is around, and A4F for those guys.
19:52They're really doing a good job decking out the car for Christmas time.
19:55Apparently they're dressed up as Grinch driving around.
19:58However, they have tried hard here, but they probably didn't know at the time
20:03that it's illegal to be driving around with dazzling lights on your vehicle.
20:09Not only that, they were attached by little flimsy pieces of tape,
20:14which could come off at any point.
20:16And if that was the case, we could have other motorists trying to avoid these obstacles on the motorway
20:20and causing accidents.
20:21So, big no-no from us, but A4F it.
20:28Constable Nick Sharp is following a vehicle that's going a little bit too fast.
20:33The car appears to be driven by a magician.
20:37But there's one trick he hasn't mastered.
20:40How to drive 90 in an 80 zone undetected.
20:43Hey, how are ya?
20:45Reason I've stopped ya.
20:47Your speed.
20:48Nick's no magician, but he does have a brain teaser for the driver.
20:52Do you know what the speed is through there?
20:5680.
20:5780?
20:57Yes.
20:58His mind is clearly blown.
21:00Picked you up on my radar at 90.
21:01The driver will have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to get out of this situation.
21:05But instead, he pulls out a deck of cards.
21:08It's big brother.
21:10One, three, four, five.
21:13So, one day, the big brother, they buy a bike.
21:17And they're gone.
21:18They go to somewhere.
21:21But they didn't tell another four brothers.
21:24I put the bag.
