00:00MUSIC CONTINUES
00:17Easy to do it. Let's go.
00:20Where's your step?
00:21Imagine going down here on your skateboard, lad.
00:24This way.
00:25Bridge, bridge, bridge.
00:30Is this the way?
00:31Yeah.
00:32Jenny, can you?
00:32Mars.
00:34Let's go.
00:35Check every side.
00:36If you check the left, I've got the right.
00:41Busy, innit?
00:44This way.
00:45This way.
00:46There we go, Joe.
00:47That's it.
00:49Hello, my mate.
00:50Please sign in.
00:51Ready?
00:55Well, that's...
00:55Oh, your luck.
00:57Hold on, let's see times.
00:59And there's still a whole day ahead.
01:01It is annoying.
01:02We've lost our second place.
01:04We're really, really gonna have to try and do something different.
01:07Next leg, we need to bump up our communication.
01:10I feel like you sometimes get a bit too relaxed.
01:12You might need to get on the tyre management.
01:15Yeah.
01:16Always room for improvement.
01:18A late check-in leaves the boys now trailing in fourth place by seven hours
01:23and more than 24 hours behind the race leaders.
01:27We've got an awful lot of catching up to do.
01:29It can't stay like this.
01:30No.
01:41The only city in the world that wakes up on two continents.
01:46Istanbul is a crossroads of civilization.
01:51At the meeting point of two continental plates, where a succession of empires have created its Roman streets, Byzantine walls
02:00and Ottoman courtyards.
02:04This is the palace of Suleiman the Magnificent.
02:06Right.
02:07Who is, that's one of the most famous sultans.
02:10Right, okay.
02:10And he produced some incredible architecture.
02:13It's beautiful.
02:13It's so grand.
02:15Imagine the number of stone masons it would take to carve all this.
02:20All these incredible columns.
02:22Wow, look at that.
02:24I love the marble.
02:25It's all this polychromatic stonework, you know, all these different coloured stones.
02:29Polychromatic.
02:29Polychromatic, yeah.
02:31Wow.
02:32Loving having Mark a bit of architecture, him and Daddy are able to kind of geek out together.
02:37Me and Mark are a wee bit more like, oh, it's so pretty.
02:40I assume we're going to go east, which I'm looking forward to.
02:43I'm rekindling my youth in a way.
02:45Well, I'm doing it in a different way.
02:47Yeah.
02:48As an older person.
02:49I'm ticking off things that I've never done before.
02:51And part of me goes all the time and goes, why have I not done these before?
02:56I'm just so excited to see what we do next.
02:59I'm ready to get out there and go for it.
03:02As two teams reflect.
03:07Victory, here you come.
03:09Hello, good morning.
03:11Hello.
03:11Front runners Katie and Harrison are ready to race.
03:18The team that arrives in fifth place will be eliminated from the race.
03:23Oh.
03:24Oh.
03:25I mean, I'm glad we've got quite a big lead, but it can just go like that, can't it?
03:29With one or two bad days.
03:30Your third checkpoint is Halfeti.
03:34Okay.
03:35Do you know what that is?
03:35That's a clue.
03:37Sounds Turkish.
03:38See, it sounds Greek, but that wouldn't make sense, would it?
03:41That would not make sense.
03:42Better find out where Halfeti is ASAP.
03:44Let's go.
03:45Hello.
03:48Hi guys.
03:48Sorry to interrupt.
03:49Does anyone know where Halfeti is?
03:51We don't know if it's in Turkey or...
03:53Halfeti is a lovely little town on the south-east.
03:57Right over here.
03:58South-east, right over there.
03:58Yeah.
03:59On the border.
04:02From Turkey's European edge to its far south-eastern frontier, teams must cross almost the entire breadth of the country
04:11to reach Halfeti.
04:13Once a thriving Assyrian settlement, now submerged beneath the famous Euphrates River, following the construction of the Berejik Dam in
04:22the year 2000.
04:25A lone minaret pierces the turquoise waters, a haunting reminder of what was lost beneath a limestone gorge that endures.
04:36Right.
04:37We are here.
04:38We need to get to here.
04:41Gazianta seems the main, like, transport hole around there.
04:44So it's just aiming for there, really.
04:46It's a long way away.
04:47Oh, it is.
04:48To get there, teams can strike out across the vast central plateau of Anatolia, catching their first glimpse of the
04:56old Silk Road, where tradition runs deep and transport moves swiftly.
05:02Or they can head south along the popular Mediterranean coast, utilising the established but costly connections.
05:11Something that I've always wanted to do is to go to Cappadocia.
05:15There's hot air balloons there, and it's been on, like, my bucket list forever.
05:18That's just, like, a non-negotiable for me.
05:20We do have a bit of a lead, and I know you're still a bit worried about it because of
05:26the elimination, but at the end of the day, it is over 31 hours to fifth place.
05:32Taking charge, Katie plots a scenic detour through the region of Cappadocia, known for its towering rock formations.
05:42Hello, yeah, Cappadocia.
05:44Cappadocia, no.
05:45It's here, Cappadocia.
05:47Erm.
05:48I don't think it's going to be as simple as our previous legs.
05:52This strategy, this route, it's going against how I probably truly feel.
05:57And the fact that we're going a little bit out of the way, it's just, like, eating me up inside.
06:01But we're doing the hot air balloon no matter what.
06:04Like, if the route itself is costing us maybe 12, 24 hours, and then we get unlucky with some buses,
06:09then who knows?
06:10It could throw us all the way off.
06:12Shall we just stick with our plan?
06:15Right. Erm.
06:17Can we get two tickets to Escogier?
06:20No.
06:21Yeah, today.
06:22Perfect.
06:23OK.
06:24Harrison's obviously got anxious over nothing.
06:26If you can't enjoy yourself with a 31-hour lead, you're never going to enjoy yourself.
06:31He says he's going to enjoy himself after the elimination, but you won't.
06:36I'm not having it.
06:37It's very exciting.
06:40Let's see how it goes.
06:47Hello.
06:48Hi.
06:4914 hours behind...
06:51My pleasure.
06:52Pooja and Roshni.
06:54Your third checkpoint is Hal Fetty.
06:59Where the hell is that?
07:00No idea.
07:01It's near to Gaziantep, city of Turkey.
07:05So we're staying in Turkey.
07:06No crossing borders this time.
07:11Oh, bloody hell.
07:12The team that arrives in fifth place will be eliminated from the race.
07:17No.
07:17That just made my heart sick.
07:18We can't be fifth.
07:19No, we cannot be fifth.
07:22We do want to make sure we're moving tonight.
07:24There's the elimination round and, you know, we don't want to go home.
07:28Last leg, we worked really hard to catch up with Katie and Harrison.
07:32So we just need to make sure we keep that lead.
07:35Shall we go sit?
07:36Here, there's seating here.
07:38Okay.
07:39I'm going to get the map out as well.
07:40Yes.
07:42So...
07:43Oh, you go coastal?
07:44Yeah.
07:44Or we go inland?
07:46It's your birthday.
07:47You decide.
07:48Whoa.
07:49That's not fair.
07:50It's your birthday present.
07:51Enjoy.
07:52I have no idea.
07:53I have no idea.
07:55The pros of going coastal, it's pretty much a tourist hub.
07:59Yeah.
08:00Given this is the elimination, you go for what seems to be a safer route, potentially.
08:06Yeah.
08:06I agree with you.
08:07You can go head south to help in the territorial rehabilitation centre.
08:11What do you think?
08:12It's quite satisfying.
08:13It would be very satisfying.
08:14If we get some good karma.
08:15And that good karma will get us to checkpoint.
08:18Quick.
08:20Balancing a reliable route with a natural instinct to volunteer, they opt to head south to Ortaja
08:26before a dart along the coast.
08:29Is he open?
08:30Hi.
08:31We wanted to get to Ortaka, Dalian.
08:34Are there any going tonight?
08:35Tomorrow night.
08:37Tomorrow night is going to put us really far behind.
08:40We have to get a bus tonight.
08:42Mm-hmm.
08:42We could go back down to Izmir.
08:44And we know it's such a big hub there.
08:45Yeah.
08:46Is there a bus to Izmir tonight?
08:48Local.
08:49In the morning?
08:50We'll have to make a quick decision.
08:52Otherwise, we're looking for a hostel tonight.
08:54I would rather do something positive.
08:56So let's go to Izmir.
08:58What do you think?
08:59Yeah.
09:00In a bid to get on the move, the cousins plan to retrace their steps back to Izmir, a detour
09:07of nearly 500 kilometres westwards.
09:12I couldn't think of a better way to spend my birthday, getting a bus at 3am.
09:24Got our transport boat tonight.
09:26I think this just puts us in a really strong position.
09:28And it means we get the whole day just to explore.
09:32Oh.
09:33300 kilometres south-east of Istanbul.
09:38Eskisha here.
09:40With Onward Travel booked to take them further inland.
09:44Ah, river.
09:46It's Gondas.
09:47Oh, God.
09:49Sorry.
09:52Katie and Harrison sample an alternative mode of transport.
09:56What a wonderful way to see a new place.
09:59It's quite a peaceful city.
10:01We're having a peaceful day.
10:02Isn't it?
10:02It's a lot of calm in Istanbul.
10:04Maybe we should start implementing one chill race day for a leg.
10:07Push.
10:07Push now.
10:09This modern city dates as far back as 1000 BC.
10:13But in more modern times, revitalisation along the Pursuk River has earned it the title the Venice of Turquia.
10:23I've got to be honest.
10:24He's not pushing very hard.
10:26There's an engine rattling under me.
10:29We're on a barge with a...
10:32We're on an open-top barge.
10:35But it feels authentic.
10:37It does as we go past a Burger King and a Starbucks.
10:40We are in true Turkey.
10:44When people say they're going travelling, I always hear it as a bit of a cop-out.
10:48I just see travelling as an extended holiday.
10:52Sure, I'll go on holiday for a week or whatever.
10:54And even then, I find that concept of spending such a large amount of money in such a short period
10:59of time
10:59on something that provides no real return weirdly odd.
11:03Doing the race is going to be quite the contradiction to who I am.
11:07But I'd like to see if it changes my current mindset.
11:12I think it is a thing that all gondola men have to be hard.
11:15I think you have to be tall that I can answer.
11:17I think so too.
11:18I think I fit tall.
11:20You're not even that tall.
11:24This is the crossing between east and west isn't it?
11:27This is Mr Bosphorus going up to the Black Sea.
11:29We're leaving Europe and we're going to Central Asia.
11:32Welcome to Central Asia.
11:34Third to leave the checkpoint.
11:36We're going to have to cover some really big distances and we're going to have to cover them fast.
11:40Mark and Margo.
11:42The priority for this leg is staying in the race.
11:46Yeah.
11:46So we've kind of committed to the big city.
11:48Yes, we have.
11:48For the sake of speed.
11:50I know nothing about Ankara apart from it was formed as a capital after 1923.
11:55It's not a tourist destination.
11:57It's a political capital of the country.
11:59We're going more with the authentic Turkey rather than the more tourist hubs.
12:03So we have taken that risk.
12:05But we think our strategy is going to work.
12:07This is elimination leg.
12:08You know, someone is going home.
12:10It's not going to be us.
12:12Utilising central cities for fast connections,
12:14the next eight hours on the road will take them directly to Ankara by nightfall.
12:20So we've covered a phenomenal distance race-wise.
12:24How far do you think that is?
12:25It's 453 kilometres.
12:27Oh, Mr. Precise.
12:32OK, good.
12:33We know what we have to do.
12:34We know what we have to do.
12:35Absolutely.
12:3740 minutes behind.
12:39Molly, we're here.
12:40OK.
12:41And we're heading to...
12:43Jesus Christ.
12:44Father and daughter duo, Andrew and Molly.
12:48Can you help?
12:48Can you point it out?
12:50Are you here?
12:51No?
12:52Any help?
12:53It kind of looks like you don't know.
12:56What about going to Antalya, which is down this southern coast?
13:00All right.
13:01It's a huge city in Turkey.
13:02Huge amount of visitors going through it.
13:04So then a huge amount of English-speaking people as well.
13:06They gave us a hand.
13:08And then we could shoot across to Adana.
13:10I'm just petrified of elimination.
13:12We need to be fast.
13:13The fear is...
13:14We are forced.
13:15Let's not pretend anything different that we are forced.
13:17Yes, I know that.
13:17We are in danger.
13:19We are in danger.
13:19So we do need to shift.
13:21Yeah.
13:21Right, Kirill.
13:22All good.
13:22Yeah.
13:23Antalya, here we come.
13:24I always say to my children, you go in to win it.
13:27You go in to do the best you can.
13:29And the best we can will be to get to Mongolia.
13:32Mongolia is the end game.
13:33Getting eliminated in Turkey is not the end game.
13:36The pressure is that I want to fulfill the journey.
13:38I want to fulfill the potential.
13:40Could you tell us, please, the next box to...
13:43Antalya.
13:443 o'clock.
13:453 o'clock?
13:45Yeah, at the antalya station at 5.30 in the morning.
13:49Perfect.
13:51Very pleased with our rich choice.
13:53We've actually booked a 14-hour bus straight to the Mediterranean coast,
13:56so going from one side of Turkey to the other, very happy, very happy.
14:00As they charge to the coastline...
14:04Oh, bless you.
14:07OK, so we figure out the next bus.
14:10Pooja and Roshni have gone west to Izmir.
14:13We know this place now.
14:15Are you ready to see the ticket office of dreams?
14:17I cannot wait.
14:18Leaving them further from the next checkpoint than when they set off.
14:23Where else, please, guys?
14:24Autosha?
14:252 o'clock.
14:262 o'clock?
14:28We travelled back to Izmir because last time we came here
14:31we discovered Izmir is a major transport hub
14:33that has lots of buses going everywhere.
14:35So we just took the risk.
14:37Let's do it, let's do it.
14:38OK.
14:39It's important to keep moving because this is the elimination leg
14:41and me and Rosh do not want to come in fifth place.
14:44Me and Rosh are not going home.
14:50No way, there's enough fish for every single one of these.
14:53In last place, ready to get going, Joe and Kush.
14:57Do you want to know a fun fact?
14:59Go on.
15:00This side.
15:00All this.
15:01This is Europe, right.
15:02That side all is Asia.
15:04I'm mad that.
15:05Over a hundred ships pass through the Bosphorus Strait every day.
15:08What's the what, Lee?
15:12This vital trade route powered the Ottoman Empire
15:15and kept Constantinople thriving through centuries of siege.
15:20And today, it's where the friends confront their own challenge.
15:25I think we need to stop battle plan.
15:27Yeah, we need to change up our strategy because we're doing something wrong.
15:30We are behind by a significant amount, lad.
15:33From what I can gauge, we're pretty good in terms of budget.
15:36So I think we should just sacrifice the budget
15:38because there's no point in getting out with £1.5,000.
15:42I think we should blow out as much money as we need to on taxis
15:45and don't be shy.
15:46I just don't want to be lost.
15:48The fact is, we're dropping second place to fifth place.
15:51The elimination is scary.
15:53We have to deliver every single day
15:55and it is possible that we do crack under pressure.
15:59We are not getting eliminated.
16:01I've told my mum not coming home till it's over, so...
16:04I'll see you then.
16:07We're best getting home, lad.
16:09All right, we need to go fast because I don't want to be stuffing Istanbul.
16:12We're getting out of Istanbul tonight.
16:14We need to find an overnight transport.
16:15But...
16:16Winning is our priority.
16:19Everything else comes second.
16:20We want to win.
16:21We want to do the very best we can for our mums.
16:24Ah, sick, lad.
16:26Travel agents.
16:27We'll ask them.
16:28Is there a direct tonight to Alanya?
16:31Yeah, yeah.
16:32Seven...
16:34Taxi.
16:35Hello.
16:36My mum has shown so much strength because we've gone through a lot.
16:40So her still working every week, meal on the table,
16:44looking after me and my brothers shows what a superhero she is.
16:48Ready to jump out, Joe?
16:49Yeah.
16:50No.
16:50We don't want to just coast through.
16:51We're going to absolutely graft to show we can do it.
16:55Excuse me.
16:567.30 to Alanya.
16:57Today?
16:58Yes.
16:597.30 to funny.
17:04Planning to hit the coastline tonight, Joe and Kush's sprint to Alanya has stalled.
17:10We've missed the bus that we tried to get.
17:12So now we've gone through the next soonest, which is an entire hour and a half later.
17:17So we're really pissed because we need to be making up an hour and a half, not losing it.
17:21God, this is so bad.
17:23We can't afford to make any mistakes and we've already made one.
17:26So it's just, we've just got to get back on our feet.
17:30Get moving again.
17:31I don't get it.
17:32What are we doing wrong?
17:44The modern capital of Ankara.
17:49The heart of Turkish politics since 1923.
17:53Now a hub of commerce and industry.
17:56Yet centuries ago it thrived on a different kind of exchange.
18:00Silk road merchants gathered here in caravanser eyes.
18:04Stone inns that offered shelter as they traded silk, spice and tales of distant lands.
18:11What drinks would you like?
18:13Tea?
18:15We love a cup of tea.
18:17You love your tea and we love our tea, don't we?
18:20Some still stand today, like Bourga Cafe.
18:23Where Mark and Margot have picked up a shift.
18:27Gentlemen!
18:29Helping Chef Umut with the lunchtime rush.
18:32Do you want me to spin this?
18:33Yeah.
18:36I never realised that making a salad was so complicated.
18:39It is the most difficult job in the kitchen.
18:43I don't buy myself, it's quite difficult to have a variety.
18:47I've cooked something that will last me three days.
18:50Because I'm retired.
18:51I've stopped working.
18:52You're not?
18:53Yes, yes.
18:55How old are you?
18:5666.
18:5766.
18:59How's it going, Mark?
19:01He's full of his bromance.
19:04How's it going, Mark?
19:05Brilliant.
19:06Are you enjoying yourself?
19:07Yes, I am.
19:07Is that salad ready yet?
19:09It's on its way.
19:10It's on its way.
19:12He's in his element and the two of them in the kitchen.
19:14Thinking they're Gordon Ramsay.
19:17That's a very good salad.
19:19When I'm in England, I play football all the time.
19:22Veteran.
19:23No, no. We're young people.
19:25I play football also.
19:28So what position did you play?
19:29Middle.
19:30Are you a midfielder?
19:31Yeah, midfielder, yes.
19:32I remember the old football player in England.
19:36Vasco and Renecker.
19:37Exactly, yes.
19:38Kerry King.
19:40Left to his own devices, Mark could get set in his ways.
19:44But I hope Mark starts to feel really free.
19:47Because if you've been in a relationship for over 40 years,
19:51where you've been a very devoted partner,
19:54and then you suddenly, you know, you have a new life,
19:58he's discovering himself.
20:00You know, it was 23 when they started to go out,
20:03and now it's like he's 23 again, discovering the world.
20:07Oh, thank you. Thank you so much.
20:09There's a sense of a spring awakening,
20:11and I think that's really wonderful.
20:14To the train station.
20:16To the train station.
20:19Tickets. Ticket office.
20:20Sticking to the strategy to cover ground quickly
20:23by city hopping through central Turkiah...
20:26Two tickets.
20:26To Konya.
20:27Mark and Margo are heading to the spiritual city of Konya,
20:31only two hours away by high-speed train.
20:355.40. Not so bad.
20:37You happy with that?
20:38Yeah, it's fine.
20:41Next stop, Konya.
20:43Next stop, Konya.
20:47We're not going to be eliminated.
20:49We're staying in this race, and we're shooting for the stars.
20:53If we're going to race, let's race all out.
21:03Oh, look, there's one there, sleeping.
21:05Oh, it's huge!
21:07650 kilometres to the south-west.
21:10It looks so cute!
21:13Pooja and Roshni have reached Istazu Beach.
21:18A pristine, sandy peninsula between a freshwater river delta and the Mediterranean Sea.
21:26This protected oasis is a nesting ground for the loggerhead sea turtle.
21:32Causes of injuries, waste ingestion.
21:35Intentional attacks by people.
21:38Why?
21:40Migrating thousands of kilometres to get here, not all turtles arrive unscathed.
21:47And volunteers at the Decamer Rescue Centre treat many ill and injured turtles every year.
21:54There's turtles our age.
21:56I'm now 32.
21:58For medic Pooja, here to celebrate her birthday, it's a very different kind of ward round.
22:05My patient today is Dolunas.
22:07He's got a cracked jaw, caused by boat.
22:1140 to 45-year-old male.
22:13Very active.
22:16Keeping its crib clean.
22:18I think this is like most wards in the hospital, to be honest.
22:22I enjoy looking after people and animals.
22:25It's a really satisfying job, which is why I love medicine so much.
22:31Small things you do can make a big difference in someone's day.
22:34There's no better feeling than that.
22:38It's nice to be able to help on this trip.
22:40I think the work these guys are doing is incredible.
22:44This has been a great way to spend my birthday.
22:47The only thing that would be really nice is just to be able to see my mum, sister and my
22:52husband.
22:53Yeah, it's just hard not to speak to them.
22:57That's done pretty much, right?
22:58Just get in some shade.
23:00Yeah.
23:03Water's super green.
23:04It's very pretty, though.
23:07Are you happy we went here?
23:08Yeah.
23:09This is a pretty nice birthday to spend abroad.
23:12But I think I've spent the last four birthdays without, like, Dad.
23:19So in the quiet moments, like today, where I would be surrounded by my family, I miss them.
23:26It's okay.
23:27When we lost Dad, all of our birthdays have just been slightly different.
23:34Like, having a card from Dad, just Dad being present.
23:40Just seeing, like, that familiar face.
23:47And I just don't have it anymore.
23:52Sometimes it's just hard.
23:54Because you just want to hear his voice.
23:58Or just know what his opinion is.
24:01Or ask for his advice.
24:06After I finished medical school, I was working in emergency medicine.
24:09I was really loving the job.
24:11And then COVID kind of changed everything for me.
24:16In December 2021, we were just drowning in sick patients with COVID.
24:28Unfortunately, I got COVID.
24:31I was self-isolating in my room upstairs, making sure I didn't touch anything.
24:36But then Dad got unwell.
24:41Having your relative in hospital with COVID is essentially, it feels like someone basically has your heart in their hand.
24:54And it's just tearing it to pieces.
24:58It's heartbreaking when it hits you.
25:00He's not going to come back.
25:04It's just a big reminder that through all of the big moments of your life, Dad's not going to be
25:10there.
25:12I felt a lot of guilt.
25:15Because in my mind, I brought COVID home.
25:18I put him in this situation and it was my fault.
25:22I still struggle with that.
25:24You just have periods where you need to cry out to release that tension.
25:28And then once it's gone, it's like a weight lifted off your chest.
25:32It kind of means you're dealing with your emotions as well, right?
25:34Like when it first happened, you kind of sucked it all up.
25:38Yeah.
25:39And like, no matter what we go through in life, I know you will always be there for me if
25:43I ever needed anything.
25:45The same the other way around.
25:46It's like how you held my hand when I was trying to get my ear peeled.
25:50Blagasked.
25:51I know.
25:53Wash is my family.
25:55She knows how I'm feeling.
25:56And she's just the perfect person to, kind of, be a shoulder to cry on.
26:00But at the same time, like, distract me.
26:03I couldn't have asked for anyone more than what have Wash been for me.
26:07we should probably start moving yeah got some progress to make today yeah I mean
26:14we are in the middle of nowhere the drive is lost however she's been through
26:17sort of desert really my main concern is still still get out of it I think we'll
26:23be okay we'll be able to get moving nearly 800 kilometers inland after two
26:30days of travel to chase Katie's dream of Cappadocia the siblings arrive into the
26:36mountainous region poised just six hours away from the third checkpoint three two
26:43one oh wow oh my god this isn't horrible
26:56famed for its surreal volcanic landscape what entire underground cities have been
27:02carved into the soft rock for thousands of years it's just incredible like I think it's
27:08the most stunning place I've ever been in my life it's just nothing like you'll ever see anywhere
27:14else many of these old dwellings have been transformed into hotels and tonight they will call one of them
27:20home wow this is beautiful this is your cave wow this amazing so cute if you want to watch balloon
27:29flight
27:30yeah tomorrow around 5 45 a.m. okay should wake up we'll be there they weren't lying were they it's
27:36a cave
27:36it's so cool get my castle on biscuits of course not oh I'd love a custard cream with this
27:43mmm
27:45oh
27:48I'm trying to find the bikes we need to go fast after 13 and a half hours on a bus
27:54joe and kush have hit elania on the south coast
27:59missing yes and are wasting no time securing their next journey east our priority is still speed at the
28:09moment we are on the move made all the way down to a lanyard that's covered about half the distance
28:15missing medicine today yeah fingers crossed
28:21I think so I'm so relieved I can't do this in tonight
28:26typically you are so good there's a bus at 7 45 which gets there at like 2 a.m. yeah
28:36we'll go see
28:37the water before we have to go that'll be nice it might not go perfect we might still be out
28:41but
28:41we know that we've got a chance you know so many cuts isn't it I love it it's okay there's
28:49a
28:49basketball court oh don't lie to me oh yeah there is oh my god she was set up absolutely yeah
28:57excuse
28:57me can I play join in oh my god I can tell Joe needed this I'd love to be as
29:11relaxed as everyone
29:11else but I just can't focus on anything but the race right now and it makes it hard to enjoy
29:16anything
29:16because you're so focused on racing even times like this where we've got a break my mind's constantly
29:22playing over whether we're gonna make it to check point in time it's just the back of your mind 24
29:257
29:25every time you stopped you're thinking about what the other teams are doing everyone's gonna be
29:29feeling the pressure I know that we're moving fast but I don't know how fast is fast enough I just
29:34don't know what we're gonna do if we have to go home earlier I'm nervous man I think it's gonna
29:41be a
29:42real close one and I just got to hope that it's in our favor
29:55what a beautiful spot your mum would love this sure 135 kilometres west and also on the coast Andrew and
30:04Molly
30:07it's amazing it is fabulous in there it is Asia when you think about it but you would swear you
30:12were
30:12in Italy like a Malfi Coast that kind of thing whereas it's Turkey it's beautiful Antalya once
30:20prowled by Salesian pirates along its jagged coast until the Romans drove them out today its hidden sea
30:28caves can be explored by boat from the lively marina attracting over 17 million visitors every year
30:36never would have thought this part of Turkey would have been so special and so lovely and beautiful
30:41I'm so glad I've seen it I just don't want to go home oh really do not want to be
30:46eliminated we'd be
30:47really really cross if we were really want to go and see Mongolia it's been brilliant and I just want
30:53to keep going it's just been amazing to do so many firsts with you and continue to do them and
30:58when
30:58are we going to be given the opportunity I just think it's a really unique experience to do with
31:03your daddy he's a teacher who never gets time off I'm going into job where I'm never gonna get time
31:08off
31:08I know I know
31:24you smell the roses you do smell so beautiful it's such a laid-back what contrast was yesterday
31:35you do feel you're off the tourist track yes well I think there might be tourists because of roomie
31:41but not Western tourists sitting in the largest province in Turquia Kanye is the spiritual home of
31:48islamic scholar and Sufi mystic roomie one of the most widely read poets in the world
31:57it's a very important huge tomb I've never seen anything like this before it's very ornate isn't it
32:03it's amazing after his death in the 13th century a Selchuk Sultan built a mausoleum here it's got a nice
32:12feel to it's got a nice scale about it I really really like it I like it a lot and
32:16it has become a
32:17site of pilgrimage for all faiths drawn to his message of love and unity crossing Europe you
32:25never had a feeling of the Silk Road but now racing across Turkey we have got the feeling really I'm
32:30coming here has reinforced that it's got a mystical field as well another design up there don't you
32:38think more rashly huh the actual journey for mark and I has only just begun the foundation is fabulous
32:48but I think the enjoyment and joy we're having can expand you don't go home I'm not ready to go
32:55home
33:00nice playing basketball reminded me of home should we go see if our bus is there for us to put
33:05our bags
33:05on and then we can relax Joe and Kush have returned to Alanya bus station to board their overnight bus
33:12that
33:13will take them 330 kilometers along the coast listen listen listen listen listen yeah we don't know where
33:26the bus is not here not here this bus is meant to be leaving in 15 minutes come on come
33:36on come on
33:36please let us see us that's us no oh this could be bad but the bus they have tickets for
33:43is proving
33:44hard to locate we don't want to go home so everything now is about time not money and I hope
33:51the other
33:51teams are relaxed a little bit mess in no we have ticket this missing this oh no you don't know
34:02ah shit Joe
34:04not this one do you speak English no English we have constantly be moving we are going as fast as
34:12physically possible we are begging this one it better be right missing missing this way yeah yeah yeah
34:24yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah this language barrier is so hard look I have this bus as a toilet
34:32because I've just drunk loads of water what time is it 5 45 let's go wow look at this this
34:49is perfect
34:54look at them over there look around oh this is going to be good it's excited rising at dawn above
35:04Cappadocia's otherworldly landscape up to 150 hot air balloons riding the region's uniquely stable air currents
35:17a daily wonder seen nowhere else on earth oh the sky is filling I don't think I've ever seen anything
35:26more beautiful or so cool in my life a ritual started in the 1980s by renowned Turkish aviation pioneer
35:35Bilgi Ezel with just a single balloon today hundreds of thousands of visitors witness the spectacle from land and
35:44sky every year feels very much once in a lifetime it's really cool isn't it it's probably the most unique
36:01thing I've ever seen I'm glad we've done it oh that's good because I had a lot of doubt when
36:08you were
36:09skeptical coming here I'm glad you're glad for me this makes it all worth it no it's the best decision
36:14we've made so far that is crazy so close oh my god if we can finish the race whilst doing
36:27stuff like
36:27this along the way then that would just be perfect yeah it would have been criminal to miss this
36:34the realization has been that I do need to experience things I'm hoping this race changes my outlook on
36:42life so that I can switch into the way I feel now and enjoy the moments like everyone else seems
36:47to be
36:48healthy I'm gonna be on an absolute high not all day all week from this yeah I'm sure I'll remember
36:55this and then after this we can race as hard as you want and I'll do whatever you want to
37:00do
37:03I think bus stations up there no daddy bus station that way oh I see it all right 250 kilometers
37:09south
37:10in Adana Andrew and Molly hiya we are looking to go to Gazzatea Gazzatea as early as possible
37:20Gazi and Tep is the last major city before the checkpoint every team must pass through here
37:26before reaching Halfeti perfect perfect good our strategy has been get as far down the leg as
37:36quick as possible so we're maybe covered about 1,300 kilometers already we've done an awful lot
37:40of traveling I think it should give us an opportunity to maybe earn a bit of money in Adana it
37:46looks huge
37:48illumination is just always in your head but we have to think long game we have to think about
37:52getting to Mongolia lying in the fertile Chukarova plain and brimming with local produce the diverse city of
38:02Adana is a culinary hotspot famous for its rich spicy dishes all influenced by Turkish Greek and Arabian
38:11flavors never worked in hospitality industry in my life so this is a first another one of my first on
38:17this trip so really delighted Andrew and Molly have secured a shift at a busy local eatery known for the
38:27much-loved local specialty shoot that all right okay oh I don't know that it seems to be some sort
38:36of
38:37sausage it's a bit funny doesn't look to be my cup of tea made from the fourth stomach of a
38:46sheep
38:46yeah okay stuffed with spiced rice hello is this for you stitched closed and boiled in a broth oh you
38:56go Molly she and Dan is so popular that over 20,000 have been known to be eaten in any
39:04given night it
39:05looks interesting well however it's the best way to describe it think of it as what you will answers on
39:11a
39:12post count to what they are evening rush over I've never been treated this well at work everyone's
39:21getting shirt on but I'm getting a stock made on it's lovely shirt on you eat shirt on yeah yeah
39:29oh
39:29do you want oh lovely oh wow pull the rope on the rope okay yeah yeah yeah look at the
39:40size
39:42I'm so nervous and cut cut yes thank you okay you ready no yeah
39:53look very nice lovely really nice just an hour behind Joe and Kush hey could we have a room for
40:06tonight having started in last position all right thank you their push for speed has put them back in
40:13the running reaching Mersin within striking distance of the checkpoint okay we're hoping to get the
40:22checkpoint straight away tomorrow welcome to leave here and be pretty much direct the check this yep we
40:29think the final sprint might mean everything being in or out of this next leg I'm on goal yet thank
40:36you
40:40you guys know any English could you help me book a taxi yes tomorrow morning we have to go
40:51okay thank you my friend we've got an idea to taxi as much as we can because it feels like
40:55the most
40:56reliable quickest or most expensive option and I think every minute is gonna make a difference
41:03we pay how much yeah can we do it okay 10,000 that's like 200 there yes 200 pounds a
41:15taxi to
41:16accelerate their race will cover 300 kilometers thank you bro but we'll leave a sizable dent in their
41:23budget so we've got 1,200 period for the rest of the race 1,000 how much 1,200 that
41:34means our budget
41:35will be so tight but if it gets us fourth please this is our one-time get-out-of-jail
41:45free card we're
41:46gonna do whatever it takes to stay in and face the repercussions when we get to it
41:54we are trying to find a key place to stay in Antalya net near this bus station do you know
42:01anywhere to the west there is a hotel sign I think we just go okay Pooja and Roshni's plan to
42:09press on
42:09towards the checkpoint has hit a stumbling block we asked about buses tonight but unfortunately there
42:15wasn't anything available it gives the other teams time to catch up starting the leg in second place
42:21the cousins are unaware their delay in Antalya has pushed them to the back of the pack with their
42:27fate now hanging in the balance shall we just really go off do you want to yeah hi today I
42:36would have liked
42:36uh been closer to checkpoint being stagnant for a night is difficult how much is it
42:49I don't feel like we are lost but I I'm not sure that we still have the lead that we
42:56had beforehand
42:58this AC is not directly on our head Katie and Harrison are probably making moves on to checkpoint
43:09excited Casey yeah yeah yeah I can't wait to do it let's find out our fate
43:18I'm not liking how quiet everyone's looking no it's pretty decilent
43:27a viewing platform lies behind room car castle travel by boat to locate the book and sign it
43:34built into sheer limestone cliffs on the outskirts of town and accessible only by boat the formidable
43:41fortress of room Cali castle room Cali room Cali castle yeah we go now this one the location of the
43:50third checkpoint where only the first four teams to arrive will remain in the race oh my god that's so
44:00cool oh wow how did we start our day in a cave in Cappadocia with the balloon and we're ending
44:07our day with this
44:08best day of my life they're about for box for seven hours that's it isn't it yeah that's a viewing
44:15platform if I've ever seen a viewing platform
44:19there it is the book get there the book
44:26oh my god we've done it again
44:30oh god how do we keep doing this yes yes well done not eliminated
44:40the relief of not coming fifth trumps the coming first we were able to race as efficient as usual
44:49and experience things so really happy we're able to pull that balance off and I hope to apply that to
44:56all the future legs we don't know if it's as efficient as usual just yet go it's like our sizing
45:02our sizing we said as long as we're not safe we're happy let me wind you up we're staying for
45:09Mongolia
45:19the four remaining teams have no idea of their relative race position we need to make sure we stretch out
45:26a little bit
45:27this is for checkpoint as they push forward to avoid elimination we're definitely making it through elimination
45:35big day big day okay none of us are safe don't say things like that i'll get sick
45:41and a bit of an upset stomach from the sure dad last night
45:49i can't find these socks but you bugger something come on get it
45:54arriving into gaziantep fresh off a night bus mark and margot are closest to the checkpoint
46:01we need to get out to halfetti how much a taxi taxi seven thousand in a taxi
46:08yes seven thousand we're not going to this is just what that goes to halfetti that one there
46:15yes so two options taxi or shuttle bus okay yeah taxi seems to be incredibly expensive or we can wait
46:23two hours to six o'clock and get the shuttle bus bus bus is the best isn't it i think
46:30taxi's too expensive the only thing is if you're eliminated the budget's no use anyway
46:37but if you keep learning your budget now at a taxi you'll never get to the end
46:42okay it was the first shuttle bus you can get
46:44oh it's deflating though isn't it i'm ready to go go go
46:51oh let's go
46:54300 kilometers behind joe and cush
46:59so stressful man i'll stick to the plan
47:03who are spending 10 of their budget on taxis
47:09money is not i can see them right now i'm not going home with over a grand living pocket as
47:14long as you keep that in your head we'll get there
47:17we'll be heartbreaking to go out yeah i hope this is the difference between us making it and
47:21all the teams waiting for a bus right now this is fast this is good
47:35i just want to go now mark go go go you know i do
47:49it seems so stupid but i didn't realize yesterday was our potential last day i know
47:54on route to gaziantep after stopping to work the night before andrew and molly
48:01the head scrambles at the minute is really scrambling
48:05if we can get to the bus and get on it and maybe settle down and hopefully
48:09the stomach will stop churning i know i just hope we don't meet anybody if i saw the boys i
48:15think i'd
48:15really kind of panic just because we had six hours on them just really nervous did we do the right
48:22thing staying put last night i would be devastated if this was over yeah
48:30i feel like if our calculations are correct we shouldn't be fit
48:35to the west 600 kilometers behind puja and roshni
48:42just don't want to be lost ideally it'd be nice if we were second or first
48:46but not last yeah just gotta pray for the best
48:51i just don't get eliminated i don't think we will i don't know why but i just have this feeling
48:56that
48:56it's not in your journeys i feel it in my journeys i just don't know how anyone can go faster
49:06it's gonna be tight i think it's pretty close
49:08we cannot go any faster whatsoever over in gaziantep a final 100 kilometer sprint to half
49:1630. back seat yay we're absolutely delighted to be leaving the bus station because it's been a three
49:23hour wait i think we're safe i'm pretty calm unless someone got off the bus and got in a taxi
49:31quick quick quick we're getting close i think our efforts have paid off i agree
49:41very nervous at the moment just want to get there and get to the checkpoint one is and find out
49:46our
49:46faith i feel like i'm impending doom right we are here how fatty how fatty
50:01find the salenahan span bridge and await further instructions come on mark leg it boy
50:12let's do this just check the waterfront yeah yeah bridge i don't see a bridge bro every second
50:18counts okay molly here we go here we go right we're looking for a bridge right kid come on
50:27straight straight i think this is that bridge there looks like a bridge that's the bridge
50:33come on salalan bridge water span bridge where down that way okay okay right
50:42i think this might be it will it wobble it might be careful margot why you might fall over that's
50:50why
50:50i'm not gonna fall over come on a viewing platform lies beyond
50:56from carla castle travel by boat to locate the book and site
51:03well i'm not so dry yeah me too oh you're there i think he's there bro
51:10come on look they're on hill i love running downhill there's a bridge molly in front
51:15yeah come on leave it moving i know just wait for me pat wait for me this is where we
51:20get the boat
51:20do we get him here yes oh god jesus master master come on we've got a checkpoint to get to
51:31you think i'm mad you are
51:39i am worrying about what everyone else is doing i guess it just depends if they did experiences that
51:45were directly on route but like i was so happy we did that it was so much fun yeah
51:54we're looking for both my room cali castle 20 euro 20 euro yeah that's good thank you
52:02it's lovely cool james bond type shitler just looking out for any other teams eat dust
52:12come on vamos watch turkish for a hurry rapido rapido
52:20viewing platform sounds like it's gonna be high up so i say it's gonna be half a bit of an
52:23uphill
52:24sprint yeah it's gonna be a sprint the hallway that's a viewing platform oh no run up that hill
52:35yeah i don't think there's anybody coming behind us molly so we're all right i think
