00:00:00the world certainly we do but we'll be there to cover holyfield ruiz and and hope that it will be
00:00:05as entertaining a fight as as the first two in the series have already been all right now let's
00:00:10get ready for what amounts to the main event of the evening between lance whitaker formerly known
00:00:15as mount whitaker because of his six foot eight inch size now changing his name to goofy as he
00:00:22gets ready to take on jameel mccline larry why would um why would lance whitaker trade in a
00:00:28perfectly serviceable boxing nickname like mount in favor of the seemingly goofy nickname of goofy
00:00:36a guess he was tired of being confused with mount rushmore also dizzy and daffy and ducky
00:00:45were already patented by some old st louis cardinals and slapsey by light heavyweight champion maxi
00:00:53rosenblum some decades ago and of course today we have uh smiley that would be oscar de la hoya and
00:01:02grumpy that would be mike tyson maybe it's some kind of marketing genius for him to call himself goofy and
00:01:11maybe it's just an alibi in waiting as in i goofed up or i gave a mickey mouse performance whatever
00:01:21the
00:01:22time will come jim when lance whitaker will be happy to be known as the former goofy well we
00:01:30shall see he says uh that the name represents his intention to have more fun than other athletes are
00:01:36having and also the joy that he wants to share with the children of the world so we'll watch this
00:01:42whole
00:01:42thing develop as it goes along meanwhile emmanuel steward uh he's getting ready to face jameel mccline and
00:01:47we're going to take a look now at the brief moment mccline has had near the top of the heavyweight
00:01:53division
00:01:54it took place july 21 of this year in las vegas when mccline was the first fighter to face michael
00:01:59grant
00:02:00many months after grant's devastating knockout loss to lennox lewis mccline walked across the
00:02:05beginning of round one threw a left hook deposited grant on the seat of his pants and 30 seconds later
00:02:11the
00:02:11fight was stopped because in falling from that punch grant as it turned out had sustained a broken
00:02:18ankle it became a big first round knockout win for mccline and propelled him into the picture where you
00:02:24see him tonight um was that one punch good enough to tell us that mccline can be a heavyweight contender
00:02:30first of all michael grant has been down so much in recent fights and he should have learned how to
00:02:34fall
00:02:35down by now without without breaking his ankle i think that it shows that mccline can and will
00:02:41throw a punch when he's ordered to do so like his cornerman jimmy glenn told him but that does not
00:02:46convince me that he's a solid fighter yet and going against goofy whitaker he's going against a fighter
00:02:52who's physically a big man and has been involved in enough big fights in recent years that he's more
00:02:58experienced and more relaxed and i think in this fight the relaxation factor may be a big factor which
00:03:04would favor whitaker because i can't expect that jamelle is going to come out a little anxious a
00:03:09little nervous because he hasn't been in these type of big fights and didn't have a big amateur
00:03:14background so all of the things would pretty much favor whitaker going into the fight but nevertheless
00:03:19as we have saw in recent fights one punch from a heavyweight can change everything absolutely mccline
00:03:25certainly made that point against grant so now let's take a look at the tail of the tape for these
00:03:29two
00:03:30giants of the ring this is the 21st century heavyweight division you can see that mccline is
00:03:36already 31 years old like whitaker like most american heavyweights of present vintage he's a late comer to
00:03:43the sport whitaker six feet eight inches tall we list mccline at six six his publicity listed him
00:03:48at six seven uh there's a half inch reach advantage for whitaker they're both huge and this was probably the
00:03:55only time uh in recent years that lance whitaker will have entered the ring against a man who weighs
00:04:00more than he does nine and a half pounds heavier at the weigh-in two days ago rules at about
00:04:06whether
00:04:06unofficial ringside scorer harold letterman okay listen up carefully because the rules change in this fight
00:04:11the lance goofy whitaker jamelle mccline fight is scheduled for 12 rounds using unified rules of the
00:04:17association of boxing commissions there is no three knockdown rule only the referee can stop the fight
00:04:23in case a cut is caused by an accidental headbutt we go to the scorecards after four rounds have been
00:04:29completed and you cannot be saved by the bell in any round including the 12th and final round jim
00:04:36as you watch tonight you can log on to hbo.com flash boxing where you'll find round by round photos
00:04:41expert commentary and compu box punch stats also don't forget to check out the latest installment of our
00:04:46where are they now series feature featuring former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion michael spanks
00:04:52that's hbo.com flash boxing
00:04:57here comes goofy and you can see that goofy is surrounded by a squadron of children who have
00:05:05been recruited from here in the new york area to underline his new persona and his intention to
00:05:13have fun with his new nickname his new identity and his fun relationship with kids we should point out
00:05:21that all the media are calling him lance goofy whitaker not goofy and these kids have been recruited for his
00:05:32marketing campaign for what in effect is a logo more than a name
00:05:44my take on it is is uh it's more goofball than goofy to call yourself goofy but of course he
00:05:51is in the legal
00:05:52process of changing his name to goopy with an eye and and when you say legal and you look at
00:05:59the eye you
00:05:59realize of course that they're saying they're saying uh clear of disney's copyright on goopy with a y
00:06:06uh and he he says he has every intention of pressing this point and getting all of us as media
00:06:12to say
00:06:13goopy and goopy only and forget that he was ever called lance whitaker good luck to him
00:06:21his promoter rock newman went so far as to compare this to muhammad ali's crusade to get media to call
00:06:30him muhammad ali instead of cassius clay after he made that transition in the middle 1960s
00:06:38which which goes to show uh just how desperate they are to get an identification
00:06:44for this fighter muhammad ali changed his life he was known by everybody including his friends and
00:06:52family i don't suspect that when uh whitaker wakes up in the morning uh people are going to say good
00:07:00morning goopy i don't know he's six feet eight and 251 pounds if he wants it maybe he'll get it
00:07:10and larry let's take a closer look at uh goopy he's got a new manager brock newman who used to
00:07:18manage heavyweight champion riddick bow he's got a new trainer phil borgia who used to train featherweight
00:07:28champion kevin kelly and a new identity as if the identity is more important than the fact that he's
00:07:37six foot eight and 250 pounds and might be a good fighter
00:07:43the uh the laughing and mugging that you've seen as he's come into the ring
00:07:47that's in keeping with what he did in free fight publicity uh and of course it's totally opposite to
00:07:54the persona that jameel mccline is going to bring into the ring because he looks
00:07:58totally serious as he did when he came out to fight michael grant
00:08:03at the weigh-in jim he seemed to be a little overwhelmed then he didn't show up at our fighter
00:08:10meeting uh i see um some anxiety on his face right now he doesn't look calm to me
00:08:18uh you would have thought that uh he had gotten all that out of himself when he fought michael grant
00:08:25emmanuel in his two tours of duty as a sparring partner for lennox lewis did he learn any craft
00:08:30i think he learned a lot according to his own comments related to his friend with lennox and i
00:08:35would say this much that one thing i know about him he has a lot of heart and he never
00:08:39quit in days
00:08:40when we would want to go seven eight rounds or ten rounds he would always go to rounds when a
00:08:44lot of the
00:08:45more experienced fighters wouldn't know so there's not a shortness of heart in this case maybe the
00:08:50experience factor but and also he's really left handed so why for him to do a lot of things with
00:08:55his left hand he has never developed his right hand probably but he does a lot of things very effective
00:09:00if you are a natural left-hander as mccline is and you fight in a conventional stance it can be
00:09:06a
00:09:06tremendous advantage because it means that the left hook and the left jab are being delivered with your
00:09:13stronger hand it's been an oscar de la hoya advantage throughout his career in the smaller weight
00:09:19classes and here's a closer look with larry at mccline mccline started boxing at the age of 25 after
00:09:29spending five years in prison for gun running his amateur record one and oh and immediately he turned
00:09:39professional with that perfect record he came up through the ranks of the promoter cedric kushner's
00:09:45heavyweight explosions to explode on michael grant he's here to detonate once again
00:09:53we shall see let's go up to ring announcer michael buffer for the official introductions
00:10:01ladies and gentlemen from the jacob k javits center
00:10:05here in the big apple new york city cedric kushner promotions is proud to present

00:10:51and now in memory of the victims and heroes of 9-11 we dedicate this event to the men and
00:10:59women of the armed
00:11:01forces of the united states of america ladies and gentlemen let's get ready to rumble
00:11:15introducing first fighting out of the blue corner wearing blue with silver he stands six feet six and
00:11:23weighs 261 pounds his professional record an excellent 26 victories including 16 knockouts with two losses
00:11:33and three bouts and three bouts even from port jefferson new york presenting the challenger jameel
00:11:47and his opponent across the ring fighting out of the red corner wearing white trunks trimmed with blue and
00:11:53red he stands six feet eight and weighs 251 and one half pounds he also brings an outstanding professional
00:12:01record of the ring consisting of 23 victories including 19 knockouts with only one loss from van nuys california
00:12:10the defending wbc continental america's heavyweight champion formerly known as lance whitaker here is
00:12:46he is going to consistently and routinely switch sides in this fight from conventional to southpaw and
00:13:00back he says that his new trainer phil borgia is teaching him a balanced two-sided attack so that
00:13:07there's little difference between the left and the right again we'll see mcline is trying to deliver
00:13:13punches with bad intentions from the outset
00:13:18over 500 pounds of heavyweight in there folks i was just thinking about it looking at being guys this big
00:13:25six seven six six six six eight and moving and punching pretty fast but maybe this is the new
00:13:31generation of the heavyweight this is it this is the future of the division they ain't gonna get smaller
00:13:35guys they're gonna get bigger
00:13:50you talked about how mcline is naturally left-handed uh emmanuel you can see his desire to use that
00:13:56left hand is the dominant weapon yes you're trying to favor a lot with the jab and the hook right
00:14:01hand
00:14:02is not that difficult the biggest concern for me with jameel right now if he doesn't catch goofy and
00:14:08hurt him earlier how is he going to be stamina wise after about four rounds because he's very hyped up
00:14:14much
00:14:14as i expected exactly his body looks all tensed up whereas goopy has a more relaxed posture and that
00:14:22normally serves you better over the long course of the fight you know jameel has a tremendous following
00:14:27right here i know most of his family and i mean he's a great ruden section which can work for
00:14:31you
00:14:31or against you sometimes too hard right hand left for mcline doofy shaking his head as if to say that
00:14:41didn't hurt but it was a good right cross that mcline dropped in now mcline backing into the ropes on
00:14:47his
00:14:47own emmanuel that's a mark of his inexperience his inexperience he didn't have much amateur fights
00:14:51and i'm really watching lawrence a lot i mean goofy he has actually improved a lot you can see the
00:14:58years of fighting i guess both of them started boxing when he was 25 years old which is very unusual
00:15:03but to see the experience level right now is beginning to show right now towards goofy no the last few
00:15:10times we
00:15:11saw him lance whitaker was a rapidly improving fighter i mean the big knockout over moscow with the
00:15:17right hand he knocked out of robert davis on the second hand with the right or second round of the
00:15:21right hand he showed much greater punching power than we had ever seen in his previous engagement
00:15:26you know i'm watching jameel maybe not having an amateur background he's fighting with his mouth very
00:15:31much open right now and i don't know how that's going to affect him going down the stretch
00:15:37good right hand from whitaker got through yep both of these guys take a pretty decent punch of it
00:15:44and anything can still happen but the way it looks if it isn't a knockout favoring mccline in the first
00:15:51two rounds he's going to have a real dangerous fight on his hands going down unless he can loosen up
00:15:55and
00:15:55and somehow relax his body get himself into a more even he's not going to be able to relax in
00:16:01this fight
00:16:09watch guy
00:16:14he's done here
00:16:15put that out put that out okay you're working your jab look at me you got to look at you
00:16:23you're working your jab but i want more consistent okay i love the way you're doing with your knees
00:16:28but i want the heart to slow down right now
00:16:30back on the road she's hitting the club but then you got to come out with something
00:16:34a drop down and hit him to the body and step around and don't move back step around him
00:16:41okay step around keep pushing it yeah that was a good round good people
00:16:46you understand nice hope to the body
00:16:52quite the opposite of being nervous and tentative mccline was hyper and yet controlled in that first
00:17:04round i thought he thought it was pretty good round he did everything right it just his breathing
00:17:09pattern seems to be he's breathing too fast so even though he's he's doing everything properly i think
00:17:14he's burning up too much oxygen yeah lance goopy whitaker by far the more relaxed fighter
00:17:25copy box numbers in round one dookie landed 14 out of 50 punches there's a big right hand
00:17:31dropped that right growth in perfectly this is turning out to be a very good fight
00:17:36particularly considering the size of the guys and the accuracy of their punches and the intensity
00:17:44whitaker firing right hand shots to the body
00:17:48whitaker has absorbed three or four clean hard punches yes and we don't see any effect on him as
00:17:54yet so i'm very impressed with it better to take a punch well when you're relaxed you take the punch
00:17:59better than which all thinks up he's probably he's relaxed but alert which is beautiful
00:18:17i can't recall ever seeing a fight between guys this big in particular to see them fighting at the
00:18:24the pace of the fight and the speed and the proper delivery of punches tremendous energy level
00:18:33both of these guys are big enough to stand toe-to-to-toe with lenis lewis yes they are
00:18:39and i'll tell you what and the speed of the fight that would make a lot of the welterweight
00:18:43around here even jealous
00:18:51i'm missing with his big shots for the last 20 30 seconds when you miss with big shots you expend
00:18:57a
00:18:57great deal of energy and again he drops in the right cross and again goofy is unaffected by the punch
00:19:07never been hurt by any punches at this stage
00:19:11well macline was not noted as a big puncher no exactly what happened with grant yes
00:19:20but he's he's developed a lot i think the uh the training camps with lennox lewis i know he learned
00:19:25a
00:19:25lot from affair because i saw him develop myself because we use him in three major camps but i think
00:19:31his
00:19:31confidence has grown a lot in particular the grant fight and he's got a good experience galva there jimmy
00:19:36glenn he speaks a lot of times working with him psychologically to him jimmy glenn asked for
00:19:40body punches mcline with accommodations of the body then
00:19:49whitaker also has tried to mixed in the body attack
00:19:59another good round for mcline
00:20:04this tuesday december 4th of the 20th century brings you the game of their lives an entertaining
00:20:11look at professional football in the 1950s and what it was like to be a player in the good old
00:20:15days
00:20:15before the game became a multi-million dollar business it was just a bunch of guys who enjoyed
00:20:23playing the game with an opportunity to play for a living a meager living but a living the game of
00:20:32their lives premieres this tuesday december 4th at 10 p.m right here on hbo
00:20:42christmas theme for the uh ring card girls tonight santa requires somewhat more material than that
00:20:50because he uh may not like to show his booty all around the world
00:20:59as as those girls just did
00:21:07creek don't punch don't punch okay i'm here i'm five
00:21:14he's trying to land the big right hand shot over the top
00:21:19retake the initiative working behind his dad
00:21:23one of the client has found out that when he punches
00:21:29that whitaker just covers up and he is in no danger and if he moves out of there well enough
00:21:36he can put his hands up as he's doing here to defend himself against whitaker
00:21:43but i believe you're right uh emmanuel that it's just going to be a question of whether
00:21:51the client can relax and not hyperventilate or maintain his conditioning through a long
00:21:58fight against the big man look at the triple left hook by the blind
00:22:02but at this stage right now both of these guys have shown that they definitely should be considered
00:22:06among the top hitter rates as well i've been very impressed with these guys
00:22:10you know my client actually delivers much better than whitaker quicker combinations but
00:22:15quicker is so strong and if at least one of these guys move on with their career they're going to
00:22:21improve tremendously because they started so late in their careers that they're really having their
00:22:26amateur apprenticeship so to say right now it is steadily improving
00:22:35jameel mcline is serious
00:22:39he has worked hard in the gym in the short period of time he's been able to devote himself to
00:22:43boxing
00:22:43and it's six years but that's a relatively short time and he's improving
00:23:00you're right the delivery of punches is much much better coming from mcclein than they are really
00:23:06from whitaker i think just the experience but both guys are showing good defense in addition to showing
00:23:11good chance with his punches are longer and he tends to drop his hands on the follow-through and
00:23:17the line pulls his punches back yes the client is punching much more accurate than paco a little
00:23:21bit of clubbing slightly in the punches coming from whatever but i think eventually they still may get
00:23:27the job there you can see that both fighters can throw in combination whitaker there with a right to
00:23:32the body than the body than right upstairs the line has shown you triple left hook left hooks behind the
00:23:38jab
00:23:40sophisticated stuff
00:23:44these guys are very very determined
00:23:48trading a lot of leather lance goofy whitaker in the white trunks jameel mcline in the royal room
00:23:56good heavyweight fight from the west side of manhattan
00:24:01boxing after dark
00:24:10cheer for me because i want to go
00:24:15pay attention don't take your damn idea i'm gonna tell you something
00:24:20don't get yourself frustrated when you stay really relaxed i want you to breathe
00:24:25you're making this a little harder than you need to make this
00:24:27you know what i'm telling you making this a little harder than we can make it
00:24:31when you're on the inside i hurt you great take that right hand in that body you understand you
00:24:37rip it in there then go over the top of it don't be so anxious that you get your right
00:24:42feet in front of
00:24:42the left turn it over all right baby okay two goliaths trading left hooks landing about at the same instant
00:24:58no slingshots with these goliaths no way
00:25:04how do you have it what's going through three i got a 30 to 27 three to nothing jameel mcclyde
00:25:11you're not really impressed but i was left right left combinations i mean heavyweights don't throw
00:25:16three punch combinations like that jameel mcclyde just keeps nailing them as he walks in so so far
00:25:21based on the clean effect of punching those combination shots jameel mccline 30 to 27.
00:25:29so mcclyde tracking towards the possible upset
00:25:35and you heard bill gorja telling his fighter that he thought he was making it more difficult than it
00:25:41needed to be there you see goofy stepping into the southpaw stands for the very first time we've seen
00:25:47it they promised more of that but mccline is unfazed as he just goes back to work with his chair
00:26:01with his own right hand with his own left hook very well
00:26:14in the past lance whitaker worked behind the jab and did so effectively
00:26:20compu box numbers through the first three rounds here show whitaker landing only six of 60 jabs
00:26:25mccline out jabbing the taller
00:26:48chopping right hand by goofy yeah
00:26:53both guys are showing if they have good teams that's very very interesting but i i just can't
00:26:59believe the intensity the way that these guys are going at each other
00:27:03keep them up keep them up keep them up tomorrow
00:27:08quick no punch don't punch don't punch
00:27:28whitaker is really landing some good hard shots at first quarter it's amazing to watch a six foot
00:27:35eight inch guy work inside the way whitaker can
00:27:48get back out of range and goes back to work with that range-finding jab
00:27:59and there's a swelling above the right eye of lance goopy whitaker yeah that's from those left hooks
00:28:12i don't want you to get excited when you're in the misdemeanor you know how you do your breathing
00:28:18and we're nice and relaxed that's how i want you to stay don't come up to his hand come up
00:28:24to his
00:28:24shoulder
00:28:24all right baby give him a little water
00:28:35how you feel baby that was whitaker's best round a couple of left hooks in here
00:28:49later in the round mccline coming back with his own heavy stuff big guys but throwing big stuff at
00:28:56each other but mccline showing some signs of fatigue in that round but both guys are so
00:29:05determined that once one guy gets an advantage the other retaliates right away out i mean doesn't
00:29:10wait a few seconds both are determined to try to take control and keep control
00:29:18we are at the david center in manhattan round five of this boxing after dark attraction between
00:29:24two giant heavyweights in the white trunks lance whitaker whom you've seen on hbo before and now
00:29:30wants to be known as goofy in the legal process of changing his name to goofy and only goofy
00:29:37if you hear us fluctuating back and forth between whitaker and goofy and lance we're having a small
00:29:44identity crisis here as we try to follow this situation and the opponent in the blue trunks
00:29:49is jameel mccline the lesser known of the two fighters who made a splash this past summer with
00:29:54his first round knockout of michael grant and he's trying to take another step up the ladder tonight
00:29:59and giving a very good account of himself in the first five rounds against the favored goofy whitaker
00:30:07blood coming from the mouth of mccline
00:30:12we mentioned at the end of the last round there's a swelling above the right eye of whitaker coming
00:30:17from those flying left hooks there was also a tiny nick above his left eye
00:30:34mccline is winning his punches now more than shooting them
00:30:38time but he's he's so unpredictable he'll look like he's tired his mouth is gapped open and you
00:30:44get close and he'll explode all over again so you can never relax but if he really appears to be
00:30:48fatigued if mccline is tiring he gets a little bit of a break here as uh goopy has to have
00:30:54his right
00:30:55glove re-taped
00:30:58you're nice you're nice you're nice you're sorry you're all right come on come on
00:31:23line has had his mouth open since the middle of round one look but he comes back to punches just
00:31:29when
00:31:29you're least expecting good shot good shot hard right hand by mccline
00:31:37you feel lashing back with the left hook what whitaker comes right back he would never let him get
00:31:41control and hold maintain it more than a couple of seconds
00:31:44step step step step step
00:32:05and left to the body well thrown by mccline battering goofy
00:32:19good shot
00:32:19trick no punch no punch please
00:32:24i think bill forza wanted more energy out of goofy whittaker than he got
00:32:28in that round and jameel mccline does not yet show signs of slowing down jameel mccline is
00:32:36fighting a great fight especially when you consider the amount of experience that he's had
00:32:39again it's the water to drink give me a rinse
00:32:47the water to drink
00:32:47rinse out the whole ranch and spit down
00:32:51give me the mouth with you man
00:32:54all right now listen take a deep breath
00:33:04i know where you're at i know that mojo
00:33:06but i need a little more to turn over sleepy
00:33:19a flurry late in that round probably turned it in the favor of mccline
00:33:38there's still a long way to go in this fight as you looked at the fight coming in
00:33:44the result you might have been least likely to forecast would have been mccline winning by decision
00:33:50but through the first five rounds he seems to have been able to take a commanding lead on the
00:33:54scorecard against lance lucy whittaker
00:33:59steve smoker telling mccline to keep his punches up one of those body shots landed low
00:34:03but he got full credit for all of that
00:34:05and whitaker seems to be losing his technique whitaker's just looking just the baddest fatigue
00:34:18himself now and he's punching with a lot more arm punching than mcclain who doesn't have the experience
00:34:24but when mcclain does explode he explodes with much more accurate and precision punches
00:34:30goofy is throwing looser longer armed shots the kinds of punches that don't produce the same
00:34:36effect as the tighter more conventionally thrown punches that mcclain is delivering
00:34:42no mcclain's punch are much more impressive and they're punching into such a manner that it creates
00:34:46excitement even with the officials
00:34:55many packs stuff from goofy not the kind of power he had in the first couple of rounds
00:35:00he threw 60 punches in the fourth round by compu box numbers and then fell off to 40 in the
00:35:05fifth round
00:35:06this fight right now mcclain has got to fight one and if he doesn't get totally exhausted and
00:35:12run out of gas i think he's going to take it all the way probably go to a decision with
00:35:16a chance
00:35:18line with some good footwork to set up the body attack there and he was out before goofy could
00:35:24retaliate that's right
00:35:33both of lance whitaker's last two fights ended with giant right hand shots
00:35:38from whitaker but when he's thrown the right hand tonight and has not produced anywhere near the
00:35:43same effect and recently they've been chopping arm extended low impact shots you know knocking at
00:35:52mosca was one thing because i don't know whether it was really punching power with a case of mosca maybe
00:35:56just being punched out and can't take a punch that much anymore and it may have given him a false
00:36:02sense of
00:36:02the confidence in the punching power and the previous guy robert davis had never been in with anybody
00:36:07this yesterday so and you know maybe spent too much time worrying and arguing about the name change
00:36:14instead of concentrating more on his opponent well as larry pointed out new trainer new promoter new name
00:36:22supposedly a new approach you still got to go out and fight the fight
00:36:33but listen i'm gonna tell you straight i'm calling for eight million right
00:36:40right and what are you doing you're coming back with a lazy freaking jazz pick that out do not keep
00:36:45that round seven again another one hit it out i'm asking you to give me the easiest stuff that we've
00:36:54done okay nothing fancy just like we did with corey and so reef and these guys he's not even in
00:37:01your class i'm gonna tell you straight seven five you can bang him to the body and pull out
00:37:06don't go back seven coming seven coming yeah don't go back all right don't go back with him
00:37:13up the jib move the jib stick stick stick and then go with the right hand open the bucket
00:37:20what's going on
00:37:25lindica must have had some hell of a sparring partners if they're all better than the five
00:37:30that's what you just told him yeah but if you well he had corey sanders i would make
00:37:36my time the favorite over corey sanders off what i've seen harold how do you have it through six
00:37:40okay jim even a fourth round against the mcclein six to nothing 60 to 54 jimmy on mcclein jim i'm
00:37:47gonna tell you something this guy jimmy will be fine he let's live with a look and then he nails
00:37:51it
00:37:52with solid shots real good combinations combinations you can feel landing in the scoring area doing a lot
00:37:58of damage last record to me when he punches you just slam with him and you know i don't see
00:38:03any real
00:38:03damage i don't see any real damage on mcclein's face anywhere so i got a shout out six to nothing
00:38:08mcclein i haven't five rounds to one and you saw whitaker land the big right hand shot there
00:38:14while harold will harold was summing up the school card best bunch whitaker's landed in a couple of
00:38:19rounds somewhere tonight there's a trainer named joe doosan watching he's the guy who guided lance
00:38:26whitaker into the middle ranks of the top ten of the heavyweight division and under whom whitaker seemed
00:38:31to be improving constantly and consistently how difficult did it to change trainers and stay on the
00:38:37same page emmanuel well it depends on the trainer some trainers come in and try to change it
00:38:42completely which i think is a big mistake he's got to try to train the fighter within the style that
00:38:46he's
00:38:47been used to about maybe making slight subtle changes i don't know if that's the case it seems to be
00:38:53based on what i've watched at our fighters meeting and interviewing whitaker that he's trying to make too
00:38:59many changes and things about everything the main change trying to become a big uh media type guy
00:39:06person yes when i think it's too many changes he's making but he's fighting a good fight nevertheless
00:39:12so i can't say it's maybe just a trainer change to mess him up but i think my client is
00:39:18so focused and so
00:39:20determined in this fight the time is tired himself but he seems to dig down and talk to himself and
00:39:26come right
00:39:27back just at the time when you least expect which is showing tremendous inner strength
00:39:33did he give lennox lewis a hard time at all when he was fine with him no he never gave
00:39:38lennox no
00:39:38really hard time but but the thing about it we saw him steadily improve it a lot as each training
00:39:44count but the one thing we noticed he never was knocked down he never was really hurt uh with lennox
00:39:49which shows he has a good chin and and he would be tired would come back and do much like
00:39:54what he's doing
00:39:55now you think he can't go another round or two and he said you want to go a couple more
00:39:59than it
00:40:00he said i need three more he said let's go and he would come right back and go those three
00:40:03rounds
00:40:12klein has sparred with several top guys he said not all of them will offer you helpful hints but lennox
00:40:19will
00:40:19and he appreciated that big right hand over the top by goopy switches into the southpaw stance and lands a
00:40:27left uppercut so for that moment at least the southpaw stance seemed to help lance goopy whitaker
00:40:35december 11th catch the next edition of real sports with bryant gumbel among the stories we'll show you
00:40:39what has happened in the lives of bobby tacon and danny little red lopez since their memorable featherweight fight
00:40:4427 years ago also the story of former nba guard mahmoud abdul raouf a devout muslim who believes an
00:40:53incident from his past is keeping him out of the nba real sports nothing is out of bounds
00:41:02use your chair lower your body don't be up high get under this country with your hand and rip to
00:41:09the
00:41:09body you understand we work so hard in the gym baby and this is what it's for what are we
00:41:17doing heavy
00:41:17dead what are we doing the upper cup well then give me what i want you understand me
00:41:26we got both trainers emmanuel talking about what they did in the gym is this is this a good thing
00:41:33well yeah i think to some degree you can but it it's still the fight is a different thing than
00:41:39the
00:41:39gym that's i'm not very seldom even bring up when i'm talking to a fighter yeah that's why i asked
00:41:43the
00:41:44question i don't get different situations you know but i think what i can see right now is just the
00:41:52inner strength of both guys but particular mccline is a big factor because he doesn't have the experience
00:41:58and i really begin to feel more and more as the fight goes on that whether he wears or lose
00:42:04whitaker's involved in particular with this main thing has had effect on his boxing thing
00:42:14whitaker winging big shots
00:42:16big landing more of them than perhaps mccline's corner would want him to you may have noticed that
00:42:23harold letterman finally got off the side and gave around to last goofy whitaker
00:42:28jab through seven rounds mccline out jabbing the taller fighter 27 out of 133 against eight out of 101
00:42:35i'm here i'm here lance goofy whitaker's gone three rounds without landing a jab coming into this one
00:42:41according to copy box
00:42:52Oh
00:43:14In case you missed it in our first fight of the evening
00:43:18Unbeaten Puerto Rican heavyweight
00:43:19Fres Okendo
00:43:20Now fighting out of Puerto Rico
00:43:22He spent most of his life in Chicago
00:43:24Remained unbeaten with a third round TKO
00:43:27Over David Aizan
00:43:29Aizan appears to have been finished
00:43:33Career-wise, not just tonight
00:43:49Early in the flight, these two 16-wheelers
00:43:52Looked like they were going downhill
00:43:55They're starting to go uphill now
00:43:57The pace has slowed considerably
00:44:00Pace has slowed down
00:44:01And seemingly, McCline has got like a second win
00:44:04He's got a comfort level
00:44:05Even though he's a little fatigued
00:44:07He seems to have adjusted to the mode that he's fighting in now
00:44:10The way his body is
00:44:13And not having many fights as an amateur fighter
00:44:16Our profession, particularly these 10 and 12 round-time fights
00:44:19It's amazing
00:44:35I'ma be straight with you
00:44:36I never have BS you, right?
00:44:38I never have BS you, right?
00:44:40Round 9
00:44:41When you pick this up
00:44:42Give me a rinse
00:44:42Give me a rinse
00:44:44Spit it
00:44:45When you pick this up
00:44:46You're coming back with the big headshots
00:44:49You understand me?
00:44:50Where should we be going, bro?
00:44:52Across here, okay?
00:44:54I'm screaming with no voice for the 8 and 6
00:44:56Slow that hard down
00:44:59I'm screaming for the 8 and 9 teams
00:45:01Everything comes off that
00:45:02But no, you want to follow this guy?
00:45:04Don't follow this guy
00:45:05Cut his ass off and work on him
00:45:07Do what to do
00:45:08You're well taught what to do
00:45:11Kick the game plan
00:45:13Kick the game plan
00:45:15Kick the jab
00:45:16Kick the jab
00:45:17Make it easy
00:45:19Make it easier than this
00:45:20Alright, buddy
00:45:22when you have these trainers using these codes and numbers those are things that they have picked
00:45:29up from the old mike tyson system that custom model they used to have and a lot of other
00:45:34trainers that they try to use them and those numbers reflect certain combinations or certain
00:45:38punches that they are trying to get the fighter to deliver why not just ask the fighter to throw a
00:45:44jab right for us i guess it's supposed to be a big secret but whatever it is whether you're
00:45:53better start throwing something i don't care if it's two two two or eight eight eight but at this
00:45:58stage right now the plan is not working and he's punching with enough explosiveness and intensity
00:46:03of the screen excitement with the judges and with me in the last couple rounds we've seen a lot more
00:46:11of
00:46:11uh lance whitaker switching from side to side going southpaw then conventional and back they're not
00:46:16really sure what it's done for him bill borica obviously wanted whitaker to to go to the bottom
00:46:24i think it's just the intensity and the fierce determination of mcclain
00:46:28is just taking over and this being a big factor in the fight as it goes down the stretch
00:46:45there's a certain uh athletic movement to mcclain the way he moves his feet uh the quickness of his
00:46:55hands you see it uh more clearly against a big strong but in terms of how he moves his body
00:47:04somewhat
00:47:04lumbering whitaker whittaker whittaker's definitely a lumbering type fighter he's fighting like a big
00:47:12man but he's got a little more speed than most guys whitaker is fighting different than mcclain
00:47:18moves on the balls of his feet a little bit which is unusual for to be a guy that that
00:47:22big and then
00:47:22he'll explode because he can get off much faster from the ball of the feet as compared to coming in
00:47:27flat-footed on the hill and that little simple movement in the foot makes him get off much more
00:47:31explosively
00:47:42line's punk output by compuvox estimate was his lowest of the fight in round eight now for the second time
00:47:49the climb will get a little extra chance to rest in a neutral corner as goopy
00:47:57has his white glove tape again
00:48:03uh
00:48:29all right
00:48:37some of the boxing commissioners in some states require you to use the tape that they give you
00:48:43to cover the gloves when you finish up the final wrap and that's to prevent what's happening here
00:48:48happening i know in new jersey the commissioner larry hazard insists on using duct tape the
00:48:53regular gray duct tape because it's it grips good and it's waterproof well and and it appeared for
00:48:59a moment there that smoker was taking goofy over to get some commission duct tape but the duct tape was
00:49:06green no in my case i have a special water tape that i use myself for the final wrap on
00:49:14the gloves
00:49:17in the client contention the crowd thought that goofy was hurt by the right hand i think he was
00:49:21just off balance
00:49:28neither fighter has ever scored a knockout past the seventh round
00:49:52we can't lose this fight
00:49:54son get me get me and be oh you got it give me that water give me some water
00:50:11let your hands go like you do with quality i haven't seen that christmas bro
00:50:16we didn't leave it anywhere we brought it right in here
00:50:21keep this now keep this keep this keep that don't spit it we didn't leave it anywhere we brought
00:50:29this in his room and i want to take him with us let's go let's go gerald mccline looked across
00:50:36at emmanuel stewart and said i'm going to do this and he is doing it too maybe you're inspiring him
00:50:46emmanuel well i'll tell you what i have so much respect for them and i'm very proud of him too
00:50:50because in the camper he didn't have any experience and and a lot of the times he didn't even have
00:50:56a
00:50:56trainer most of it and he was just by himself wrapping his own hands very quietly and trying
00:51:01to sit and watch when i would be working with linux on techniques some days he would just come over
00:51:05and
00:51:05ask that he said and i'm just so proud of what he's accomplished the reference to jameel mccline's time
00:51:11spent as a sparring partner for lennox lewis prior to two separate fights in lewis's career
00:51:16mccline running and that punch knocks goofy silly potential knockout coming for mccline as he tries to finish
00:51:30crowd on his feet big well it is start round 10 by mccline i'm not sure goofy whitaker saw it
00:51:37coming
00:51:39is he going to get not goofy here he's already been knocked goofy once
00:51:52whitaker had his hands down
00:51:58whitaker gives indication like he really wants to go to his corner
00:52:14he's shaking he's blinking his eyes he's trying to buy time and doing a good job at buying time
00:52:21mccline is a little winded he's trying to take his time and relax which i think is good
00:52:25particular being that he's not that experienced so the damage he's did i think is going to be there
00:52:30for the rest of the night so it's notice him trying to go all out right now because otherwise
00:52:34he may run out of gas it was a spirited rally to start the 10th
00:52:42and whitaker is still wobbling as mccline tries to line up and fight him again and that's what
00:52:50mccline needs to do and that's what jimmy green is stepping to use his left hand because there's a
00:52:54great left hand and if he starts using his jab and stepping in and pushing the jab hard instead of
00:53:00flickering it it would be a big factor going down and stretching these next two rounds the
00:53:04cline is so authoritative with the dab and the left hook that's really been the big difference in the
00:53:09fight the natural left-hander as you told us before the fight and that's been a critical factor
00:53:17he's coming on
00:53:34now whitaker has his feet back under him
00:53:38the decline leaning on him and limiting the damage as the clock counts down
00:53:43in what has been a big
00:53:44yeah the young man from port jefferson new york yeah he spent himself a lot
00:53:49time to finish out with the first part and that's why he had to slow down
00:53:54deep breath we got two fucking rounds bro get that ice on his neck get that ice on his neck
00:54:01watch this here's where we do the 30 second rule close right i'm bringing the doctor and it
00:54:05won't take any of your time okay fine all right let him look at it
00:54:12here's where we do the 30 second rule close right i'm bringing the doctor and it won't take any of
00:54:17your time okay fine
00:54:20all right let him look at him
00:54:26brief me this ain't losing none of my time right yo steve i don't lose none of my time here
00:54:32right
00:54:38let's take a look he may be a southpaw but that left hand has set up a whole bunch of
00:54:45right hands for
00:54:46yes it is yes he's been very effective with the right hand tonight i've been surprised
00:54:50that was the punch that knocked whitaker goofy it landed on the temple right there
00:55:11well there's a new rule in new york state harold you want to tell us about the new rule that
00:55:15allows
00:55:15the referee to extend the period between rounds 30 seconds okay jib it's not 30 seconds if the doctor
00:55:21comes in they call time out and then once the doctor leaves the corner gets a full minute to work
00:55:27on
00:55:27their fighter you know it's the full minute that they're inside of the doctor so they call time
00:55:31out as soon as the doctor comes in give the quarter a full minute to work on a fighter
00:55:39so that means that whitaker got an extra period of time between rounds to recover from the beating
00:55:44he took in round 10. harold how do you have it through 10 rounds okay jim i got it eight
00:55:50rounds to
00:55:50two 98-91 jameel mcclein with a big 10-8 round in the camp i mean you said they had
00:55:56to give him an extra
00:55:57flight because whitaker looked like he wanted to quit badly hurt i thought that uh let's would have
00:56:01did it up around seven and eight when jameel mcclein looked like a tired fighter but other than that
00:56:06it seems to be all jameel mcclein with like you say left hooks combinations and a real real good straight
00:56:11right hand on both of our cards whitaker is going to have to do something very dramatic to win this
00:56:22fight
00:56:23and i have not heard bill borja tell goopy that he needs to knock out to win but
00:56:28you suspect that whitaker gets the point based on the dissatisfaction that borja has shown from round to round
00:57:01more glove taping
00:57:13well the danger of continuing to attack is that you might leave yourself open for the big counter
00:57:20mcclein be sitting on this lead emmanuel i think that he's fighting very if you notice even though
00:57:24he's not punching as much he seems to be kind of resting himself maybe he's exhausted but he's
00:57:30moving forward as he's trying to smother whitaker he's not all the time backing up
00:57:34in the trenches he moves forward which neutralizes the punching power of whitaker but i think he's saving it
00:57:40all for the next round when i can gather he don't seem to be that hurt but he seems to
00:57:44be just trying
00:57:44to rest a lot can you tell me what glicker is accomplishing by switching southpars he looks
00:57:52awkward i don't get the point absolutely nothing i think another one of those tactics that they
00:57:57have spent so much time on you know maybe trying to be like a big kevin kelly instead of just
00:58:02staying
00:58:03in one position he's i think he's been devoted too much of his time to doing things that were just
00:58:07a total trying to make him cute right that's trying to make a six foot eight inch 250 pound guy
00:58:13goofy and cute and in the meantime mcclein has been standing on how to beat him in the ring
00:58:19and that's all and mcclein has gone in and fought a big man's light and fought it well
00:58:25and that's why he has the edge with a little over three minutes to go
00:58:43he landed one big shot but that's all in that last rally very shortly he'll have only one round left
00:59:01the dance is the answer to the move get ice rinse rinse rinse rinse rinse rinse
00:59:09that's it bro i don't boost it we're down to this last round we don't knock the suck out i
00:59:15don't see it
00:59:15going our way i can't boost it
00:59:25i'm sorry how you feel buddy we feel like we're the champs son so you got to go out here
00:59:35and win
00:59:36this round for me not being done we got one round to make this happen keep this you understand me
00:59:42we
00:59:42got one round to get that we got one round to make this happen dude look at me look at
00:59:49me
00:59:54if there's a good sign for goofy at all it may be that mcclein's tank is running low he only
01:00:01threw 22
01:00:01punches in the 11th round on the other hand how much is goofy have left harold how do you have
01:00:08it
01:00:08scored coming to the last round okay jim eight rounds to three 107 101 jameel mcclein you know i'm gonna
01:00:15tell you something when they get these in these clinches watch what happens jameel mcclein being this
01:00:19the heavier guy grinds goofy across the ring he's laying on him and it's taking a lot out of
01:00:24it's worth it i mean he knows how to work and it clinches he really does i mean i think
01:00:29that
01:00:29man is doing nothing in the glitches but brian constantly rides him across the ring
01:00:38and bill boys have made it clear to lance goofy whitaker between rounds that he thinks he needs a
01:00:44knockout for him to win
01:00:50so it's desperation time for goofy and a possible big win on the horizon for a rising heavyweight
01:00:58name jameel mcclein is doing he's standing close and smothering whitaker knowing that he's got the
01:01:16fight one he's not giving whitaker any room to land effective big punches so he's doing everything in
01:01:22close quarters right now even though whitaker's throwing a lot of punches the plan is still trying
01:01:27to smothering he's never backing back to giving him room to land a big long clean punch
01:01:33a smoker breaks him up there he goes again
01:01:39and whitaker didn't get anything off before mcclein was able to engage him
01:01:46once again he's smothering using his left shoulder to neutralize the punching power
01:02:19and once again he's jumped off goofy's range walking and down smothering and not giving him too much
01:02:26much fun to know
01:02:37and now whoopee looks discouraged
01:02:51They became the main event unexpectedly and lived up to DeRoe with a rousing heavyweight fight.
01:03:10The Client's trainer, Jimmy Glenn, has his own bar about 20 blocks away from here.
01:03:17And it will be packed.
01:03:19I may have to stop by myself.
01:03:21I think that may be the place.
01:03:23I'll bet you there'll be free beer at Jimmy Glenn's bar tonight.
01:03:27It'll be a wonderful place tonight.
01:03:28So is this the short and happy life of Goofy Whitaker?
01:03:34Yes.
01:03:35Maybe the last time, huh?
01:03:41It could be the arrival of a new heavyweight star because Jamil McCline is fun to watch.
01:03:46Big time.
01:03:47Big time.
01:03:48Big time.
01:03:48Big time.
01:03:49Big time.
01:03:50Big time.
01:03:52Big time.
01:03:52Big time.
01:03:54Give it this.
01:03:55Big time.
01:03:56in prison for gun running became a boxer when came out more or less at the
01:04:03suggestion of other people he didn't really have any particular plan says
01:04:07this is the only job he's ever had you talk about taking it seriously in
01:04:11addition to the tutelage of head trainer jimmy glenn mccline now has a swimming
01:04:15coach a yoga guru a strength and conditioning
01:04:19coach a running coach a gyrotonics trainer gyrotonics is a new wave
01:04:24conditioning training routine involving weights stretching and yoga moves
01:04:28he says he's spending sixty to seventy thousand dollars a year
01:04:32to support all these people but it's not about now
01:04:35it's about getting better over the long haul i think the biggest thing that he
01:04:39has going for him though is his inner strength that he has tremendous
01:04:42determination inside he wants to be able to read he wants
01:04:45something and that's what i think forget all of the other things
01:04:47and that's what's really made him get to be where he is and lennox who i was with
01:04:52last night and he was very very disgusting because you know he was
01:04:55upset because of mike tyson situation says we're all prepared to fight hbo
01:05:00showtime everybody's cleared the way uh there's no promoters no nothing and
01:05:04down mike all of a sudden says i need another tune-up he said what's wrong with
01:05:07mike maybe he's not ready but anyway he was very happy with
01:05:11mcclion and he predicted the plan would win well he got what he wanted i think but
01:05:15let's find out for michael buffer let's go up to buffer for the official
01:05:18station ladies and gentlemen on the line tonight was the wbc continental
01:05:23america's heavyweight title we go to the budweiser scorecards
01:05:28melvina latham scores the belt 116 to 112. don ackerman has it
01:05:34114 to 113. steve weisfeld scores it 115
01:05:40115 to 112 all for the winner by unanimous decision
01:05:45and new champion jameel
01:05:50bickheim mcclion
01:05:59well it was closer than you might have expected at least on one of the three scorecards but
01:06:04mcclion gets the unanimous decision and celebrates big time
01:06:15well you talk about intense final copy box numbers mcclion landing 55 more punches landing at a
01:06:24considerably higher connect percentage whitaker throwing more punches particularly in the late
01:06:29rounds when he was trying to reel mcclion in and knew that he was fighting from behind
01:06:35and in the first round mcclion established the jab and out jabbed whitaker all the way
01:06:41lance whitaker who in the past has been effective working behind the jab landed only 10
01:06:46out of 149 against big jameel mcclion and mcclion was sticking his jab in there
01:06:5243 times over the course of the bout and throwing more than did whitaker let's go to larry merchant with
01:06:59the winner all right thank you very much jim congratulations jameel did you feel that
01:07:06too much of this fight was about whitaker and goofy and all that stuff beforehand all of it was about
01:07:16goofy and you know the man wants to be called goofy so we're gonna call him goofy uh did you
01:07:22find that
01:07:22in itself weird no i i did i found it a little different but you know that's what he wanted
01:07:27to
01:07:27call i respect him so that's what i called him seriously but uh yeah it was the same thing as
01:07:33the
01:07:33last show you know and this guy you know they made a big deal about this guy michael grant's a
01:07:37much
01:07:37better fighter than this guy much better and they made a big deal about goofy this and goofy that he's
01:07:44on a
01:07:44whirlwind uh media whirlwind tour while i was getting rest and eating rice were you a little
01:07:50bit uptight or anxious about this whole thing because of the way that the pre-fight hype seemed
01:07:58to be leaning and discounting you or did you feel this is good because i know what's going to happen
01:08:05in the fight exactly merchant you said it you couldn't i couldn't said it better you know uh i was
01:08:10in the
01:08:11gym i've been training for 10 weeks been doing my job haven't seen my daughter haven't been home
01:08:18you know and now you know it's over and it seemed early in the fight when you were taking it
01:08:22to him
01:08:23and it was a very fast pace that you might wind down were you so souped up that that was
01:08:31a danger
01:08:31or did the punches you delivered wind him down with you well the punches that i was delivering
01:08:37definitely winded him down and that was the game plan show him some speed show him some movement
01:08:42you know you know i always said i do well against big men i'm just as big as them i'm
01:08:46as a matter of
01:08:47fact i'm bigger than them i'm heavier than them i'm stronger than them and i'm faster than them more
01:08:53athleticism than them so i always do well against big guys let's take a look at the punch that staggered
01:09:00him and then you tried to finish him did you think you had it there well i thought i had
01:09:07him but you
01:09:07know i was a little out of position a little rushed didn't know which way to go there you know
01:09:12you can
01:09:13see me coming in a little sloppy and then once i got him up against the ropes i wasn't as
01:09:17uh schooled
01:09:18as i should have been but you know this is a learning process you know uh i don't want to
01:09:23make any
01:09:23excuses you know i'm amongst the best in the world but i'm still learning you spent two years as a
01:09:29sparring partner for lennox lewis did that accelerate your development because uh for
01:09:33someone starting at 25 having one amateur fight uh this is unusual well you know lennox lewis is
01:09:41awesome you know i had a great time working with him he treated me well he showed me a lot
01:09:46of things
01:09:47that uh a lot of guys um aren't able to show me and you know uh i take that into
01:09:53all the training you
01:09:54know i just i see i've seen what you see next the best in the world thank you very much
01:10:00jameel mccline
01:10:03all right just a final word we're in a vast convention center here it goes on for acres and
01:10:09miles and and days it seems and this is just one corner of it and as i was wandering around
01:10:15i noticed
01:10:16other convention sites where they were selling crafts and uh sound equipment and they also sell boats here
01:10:23in one thing or another and tonight we had a kind of a heavyweight convention and what we found is
01:10:30that we two pretty good products that we're going to see more of in okendo and mccline and that you
01:10:38can't sell a fighter by calling him goofy you sell him in the ring jim or he sells himself well
01:10:47emmanuel
01:10:47steward let's talk briefly about the heavyweight hierarchy now lennox lewis is at the top getting ready to
01:10:53fight mike tyson those in the minds of most people probably the top two lot of your klitschko who
01:10:59might have been here tonight except that he hurt his shoulder unbeaten kurt johnson out of canada
01:11:03chris bird kind of a novelty act with his unusual style those are probably the top five where does
01:11:09jameel mccline rank off what you saw tonight but what i saw tonight jim jameel mccline likes right up at
01:11:15the top i mean he's a threat to even lennox so he could be number six or better very good
01:11:20not only
01:11:22did he deliver punches good but the determination and i usually judge athletes particular boxers
01:11:26because of the one-on-one sport on the inside and he is tough on the inside in addition to
01:11:31have
01:11:31developing skills and i think he's a big threat to anybody right now in fact if you could get him
01:11:36into the ring with vladimir klitschko before klitschko gets his title shot that would be a tremendous
01:11:40fight wouldn't it he's a big fight for anybody right now i mean it's hard to fight a guy that
01:11:45that has just had fights with so much determination and intensity and uh he's improved a lot i i was
01:11:50very proud of him tonight very impressive and lennox if you're out there he wants you
01:11:56who knows maybe someday all right well thanks very much emmanuel um and we'll have a final word on
