00:03Look into the eyes of a born champion.
00:06Boxing's destiny's child, 24-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr. has never stared at failure.
00:1226 professional fights, 26 victories, success, his only expectation.
00:18Mayweather pounding, pounding!
00:20He hits harder than you think he does.
00:22Mayweather with her right over the top, stuns Manfredi.
00:24Mayweather comes back with an angry right hand of his own.
00:26Feel the hands of 28-year-old Jesus Chavez.
00:30The primary weapons in his arsenal of attack.
00:33A raw, relentless fighter with 31 straight victories.
00:37His fists ready to do damage at all times.
00:40And a big uppercut by Chavez.
00:42It's starting to look like a movie fight.
00:44It's getting too easy for Jesus Chavez.
00:46See the feat of the champion.
00:49Plus, with great speed, he dictates the moves and the flow of the fight.
00:53A blur in the ring, Floyd Jr. frustrates his opponents first with his legs, then with his gloves.
01:00The elusive Mayweather Jr.
01:02Floyd comes back with a one, two, three, four, five, six.
01:05The super quickness of Floyd Mayweather produces a knockdown.
01:10Feel the heart of the Mexican-American challenger.
01:13Determined to compete against the best in search of respect inside the ring.
01:17That elusive first world title remains his goal.
01:22Tonight, the contrasting strengths of these two men clash on center stage.
01:27Floyd Mayweather Jr., Jesus Chavez.
01:30The 130-pound championship is at stake.
01:33Who will prevail?
01:34Like a beneficiary.
01:40The Arena Mask of the Americanоже昆虠.
01:43Theн Myself is at stake.
01:46Shadow Knowing is a terrible sport from Tomorrow..
01:51The Valley.
01:52The Armenian Film based honor.
01:52Theifies.
01:52On your own degree.
01:55The Ladies.
01:56And the Year.
02:11We are live in San Francisco
02:14with a world championship boxing doubleheader
02:16from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
02:19First up tonight, Filipino sensation Manny Pacquiao
02:22defends his 122-pound world title
02:25against Agapito Sanchez.
02:27And then in our main event, undefeated 130-pound world champion
02:31Floyd Mayweather Jr. puts his title on the line
02:33against Jesus Chavez in what may be Mayweather's last fight
02:37before moving up to the lightweight division.
02:40We are in the city by the bay for the first time
02:43in the 28-year history of boxing on HBO.
02:46More known for its great cultural history,
02:49San Francisco tonight plays host to one of the sport's
02:52most exciting young stars in Floyd Mayweather.
02:55And we expect a capacity crowd in this civic auditorium
02:59where Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones,
03:03the Grateful Dead, U2, and Madonna all have performed.
03:07And now tonight, George Foreman will join that list
03:10working on the broadcast with us.
03:13Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lapley.
03:14We welcome you to this special edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing.
03:18Special because after a 40-year absence from the city,
03:23Major League Boxing returns to San Francisco,
03:26and we're thrilled to be a part of that.
03:28It's the first time that a major title fight has taken place in this city
03:31since Gene Fulmer fought Dick Tiger for the middleweight title here
03:36all the way back in 1962.
03:39We're excited because we'll see Manny Pacquiao,
03:41the rising punching sensation of the 122-pound division.
03:44We're excited because Jesus Chavez has waited a long time
03:47for his shot at a title and at Floyd Mayweather Jr.
03:50Between the two fights, we'll be talking to the two combatants
03:53in next week's heavyweight championship rematch.
03:55Heavyweight title is Tassim Rahman,
03:57and the man who is now in the role of the challenger,
03:59former titleist Lennox Lewis.
04:01And working with me here at ringside, as I mentioned,
04:03is the illustrious two-time heavyweight champion of the world,
04:06George Foreman, the Beatles, and now you, George.
04:08Not a bad place to be.
04:10Later on tonight, we'll look at Floyd Mayweather,
04:12who says, again, incidentally, he's said it before,
04:15that this will be his last fight at 130 pounds,
04:17and he's going to move up to lightweight from here.
04:20Assuming a victory over Chavez, and that's a major assumption
04:23because this is a real fight,
04:24is Floyd the kind of fighter who can continue to be a great star
04:28in higher weight classes?
04:29I think that's what he should look forward to,
04:31to move up in weight.
04:32He can even move up two weight classes
04:34because he needs such a challenge in his life.
04:36He's never done well when he's had any advantages at all,
04:39but tell him he's somewhat of an underdog in anything,
04:42you'll see the best in Floyd Mayweather.
04:44He needs to move up.
04:45I can't wait for it.
04:45You know, that's so true because his great performances
04:48were against strong opponents like Angel Manfredi
04:51and Diego Corrales when he was seen as having a chance to lose.
04:54Maybe tonight we'll again see Floyd Mayweather
04:56at his absolute best.
04:57But before that, the 122-pound title fight
05:00between Manny Pacquiao and Agapito Sanchez.
05:02Here to say more about it,
05:03HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant.
05:05Larry, Pacquiao was so sensational
05:08in knocking out Leshanolo Ledwaba of South Africa,
05:11a tremendously well-rounded fighter,
05:12in his last appearance in June
05:14that he immediately skyrocketed from relative obscurity
05:16to the top of most experts' lists at 122 pounds.
05:21Is he really that good?
05:21Let's hope so.
05:24After the showman Prince Ahmed pulled his disappearing act,
05:29both during and after his fight with Marco Antonio Barrera,
05:33the featherweight divisions needed a transfusion of some hot new blood.
05:39Hello, Manny Pacquiao.
05:42Manny Pacquiao.
05:42He is that.
05:43He can fight.
05:45He can punch.
05:46And if you still need a showman,
05:48he's acted in three movies,
05:49and he's also a tournament-caliber pool player.
05:53In other words, a pool hustler.
05:57Jim, it could turn out that he's a whole blood bank
06:00for the featherweight divisions.
06:02We'll see.
06:03He'll be fighting a hustling opponent in Agapito Sanchez,
06:06who's been in against some of the best
06:08at both 122 and 126.
06:10Let's take a look at the tail of the tape for these two fighters,
06:13and you can see the seven-year age advantage in Pacquiao's favor.
06:17He's also two and a half inches taller,
06:19has three inches more reach,
06:21120 and a quarter versus 120 and a half.
06:23They both weighed in well under the 122-pound limit,
06:26and according to our unofficial HBO scale,
06:29both have put on more than 10 pounds
06:31between the time of yesterday's weigh-in
06:33and their entry into the ring tonight.
06:36Rules of the bout were their unofficial ringside scorer,
06:38Harold Letterman.
06:39Jim, the Agapito Sanchez,
06:41Manny Pacquiao fight his schedule for 12 rounds
06:44using the unified rules that you see on your screen.
06:46Real quick, we want to go over the criteria
06:48the judges will use to score each individual round.
06:50Cling punching, effective aggressiveness,
06:53ring generalship, and defense
06:55with a big emphasis on clean, effective punching.
07:00Jim.
07:01All right, thank you, Harold.
07:03And now here's a look at Agapito Sanchez
07:06of the Dominican Republic,
07:08who now lives in Brooklyn
07:10and has been in against fighters like
07:14Marco Antonio Barrera, Cesar Soto,
07:18some of the toughest at 122 pounds.
07:20Usually, he says, Larry,
07:21on short notice and without adequate preparation.
07:24Yeah, he fought not only Soto,
07:27but he went in against Norwood,
07:30Marquez, Espadas, all he says,
07:32on a week or two notice
07:34when he couldn't get into the right condition.
07:37And as far as him fighting Barrera, Jim,
07:39he was the first fighter ever to knock Barrera down.
07:42This is not just a journeyman fighter,
07:46a good, professional, tough, experienced prize fighter.
07:50One thing to watch for with Sanchez,
07:52he's only 5 feet 3 inches tall
07:54and has frequently been penalized for low blows.
07:58He says, hey, how can I help it?
08:00I'm always punching up against bigger guys.
08:15And the familiar music of Eye of the Tiger
08:18is the entry choice for the stardom-bound
08:24and somewhat star-struck Manny Pacquiao,
08:27having recently moved from his home in the Philippines
08:30to Los Angeles to train in Freddie Roach's gym.
08:33Pacquiao is acutely aware of the showbiz elements of the sport
08:36and wants to be a big star.
08:40And he has a link
08:41to probably the only legendary Filipino fighter,
08:47the great Flash Elordi.
08:49One of his managers is the son of Flash Elordi.
08:52Elordi fought Sandy Sadler here in San Francisco
08:56for the featherweight championship 45 years ago.
09:00According to his son,
09:03Flash Elordi was winning the fight
09:05when it was stopped mysteriously
09:08by a slight cut in the 13th round.
09:12You don't often see in the lower weight classes
09:15southpaw fighters
09:17whose prime stock in trade is punching power,
09:20but this is a southpaw who blows opponents away.
09:24Now let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffer
09:26for the official introductions.
09:31Ladies and gentlemen,
09:33welcome to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium,
09:35San Francisco, California,

10:09The promoter for our first title bout
10:11is Murad Mohamed M&M Sports.
10:13The three judges assigned to ringside
10:16scoring this bout
10:17on the 10-point must system
10:19will be
10:20Ricardo Baez,
10:22Raul Caiz Sr.,
10:24and Marshall Walker.
10:26And when the bell rings,
10:27working for the 154th time
10:30in a world title bout,
10:32World Boxing Hall of Famer
10:33Marty Denkin.
10:36And now,
10:37ladies and gentlemen,
10:39a battle of champions,
10:4012 rounds of boxing
10:42for the unified
10:44IBF and WBO
10:46Super Phantom Weight
10:48Championship of the World.
10:53Introducing first,
10:55fighting out of the blue corner,
10:56wearing purple trimmed with gold,
10:58and weighing in at 120 and one-half pounds.
11:02His professional record,
11:0333 victories,
11:05including 20 knockouts
11:07with seven losses and a draw.
11:08From Brooklyn, New York,
11:10by way of
11:11La Victoria,
11:12Republica de Dominica,
11:13here is
11:14the WBO
11:16Super Phantom Weight Champion
11:18of the World,
11:20Agapito
11:21El Ciclo
11:24Sánchez.
11:29And his opponent
11:30across the ring,
11:31fighting out of the red corner,
11:33wearing red, blue, and yellow,
11:35and also weighing,
11:36pardon me,
11:36weighing in
11:37at 120 and one-quarter pounds.
11:40His professional record,
11:4133 victories,
11:43including 24 knockouts
11:45with only two losses.
11:47From General Santos City, Philippines,
11:49presenting
11:50the IBF
11:52Super Phantom Weight Champion
11:55of the World,
11:56Manny
11:57the Destroyer
11:59Pacquiao.
12:01No!
12:06Yeah!
12:11And Valderado!
12:31Okay. Ricardo, I told him he knows his responsibility and tell him to remember it.
12:37I told you, Manny, what your responsibility is. I told you what my job and responsibility is.
12:42Let's all do our job. Good luck.
12:46Pacquiao says that he wants to build a name in boxing that lasts beyond his last fight.
12:54It is events like this that helps to build such names.
13:00If he's got the right stuff.
13:02I don't know when I've ever seen a fighter so gleefully happy to get into the ring and fight.
13:06I mean, the smile just came off of Pacquiao's face within the last 20 seconds or so.
13:12But it's been all celebration up to this point.
13:14Most guys try to sort of get a game face on for fighting.
13:18Not Pacquiao. He's here to have a blast.
13:23Pacquiao comes on like waves, but he's in with a smaller opponent.
13:27He's going to find himself missing, so he may have to readjust his style just to be suited to throw
13:33uppercut punches.
13:38Sanchez is not going to be up there where he was able to go with his last fight.
13:43Right. Ledwaba was right in front of him.
13:45At a height.
13:46At a height where he could get at him.
13:47Now Pacquiao lands one solid blow to Ledwaba against the ropes.
13:57Now it's Sanchez who drives Pacquiao into the ropes and goes to the body himself.
14:01big ring George 20 feet or more lots of room for Sanchez to try to make himself
14:07elusive if he chooses to use it well I think Sanchez just need to use the
14:12middle of the ring let this guy with the longer arm longer reach fall over his
14:17back a few times make him pay for every miss and he can find himself right there
14:21in this fight Sanchez lands a jab right up the middle
14:27a lot of good fighters can't fight short opponents they just can't do it they just
14:32don't know how to attack
14:39you wait around for one good shot as Pacquiao is doing and you don't get any
14:44really just got to wade in and just wade in with uppercuts
14:47right now he's allowing Sanchez to take over the initiative
14:50as he waits to throw punches and Sanchez seizes his opening
14:56he's got to always lower his hands from his high defense to hit Sanchez that's
15:01going to cause some problems Sanchez with a looping left hook to Pacquiao's ear
15:06good uppercut this time by Pacquiao Pacquiao with the uppercut Sanchez
15:10doubles up the jab and lands a right hand up the middle and fires the jab a couple
15:14more times and a good little rally by Agapito Sanchez
15:17who's given better than he's gotten so far in round one
15:31Pacquiao rip Sanchez with a straight left hand
15:33and he's kind of turning it under that time
15:35almost a slight uppercut as that one was
15:38decided to stop the right straight hand and just bring him underneath a little bit
15:51a couple of right hands up the middle by Sanchez both fighters have found the openings
15:57working straight up the pipe going between their opponent's fists to make contact
16:03so round one comes to a close as we go to Sanchez's corner where they speak Spanish
16:08our interpreter is the familiar Ray Torres
16:10when we go to Pacquiao's corner where they speak Tagalog
16:13our interpreter is Ernie Kaluuya
16:16hard left hand by Pacquiao to punctuate round one
16:33now Manny listen to me you've got to use a jab and a little bit more okay not one jab
16:39I want to double jab step in and get a little bit closer okay okay
16:49okay be smart be smart we're okay make him miss make him miss and you got him
16:57he's not gonna do nothing to you you gotta touch him and he won't be able to
17:03stand in front of you you're better than he is
17:14by CompuBox numbers in round number one Pacquiao threw 42 punches Sanchez threw 84
17:23so a neat statistical anomaly as Sanchez throws
17:27exactly twice as many punches as Pacquiao in that first round
17:32the good thing about the last round Pacquiao sent Sanchez to a lot of hurt
17:38headbutt big cut right over the right eye on Pacquiao blood spurting from the cut
17:43this fight we may not go to a conclusion
17:46but there's a cut right on the eyebrow of Manny Pacquiao
17:52big one
17:52it was an accidental butt as Sanchez dove in
17:58but I don't know if this fight can continue
18:00well now how predictable was that height disparity between a southpaw and a
18:06conventional fighter and Sanchez a guy who likes to work inside so this was
18:10brewing from the beginning wasn't it climbing yep it's all on the wrong side
18:14when it's on the wrong side wrong things bad things happen
18:17the blood is looks like it's going to be dripping into the right eye of Pacquiao
18:23now Pacquiao says he's never been cut before his cut man Ruben Gomez
18:37got his balance right he makes you miss and he pays you back
18:42and Sanchez lands a vicious straight left hand on the eye that Pacquiao is having difficulty with
18:49and another left right on the cut
18:52and now Pacquiao begins to cut loose a little bit perhaps figuring he'd better try to go ahead and do
18:57some damage
18:57and Pacquiao is wincing I don't think he has the full sight out of his right eye
19:03I don't think he can see at all out of the right eye
19:06and that's what Sanchez is taking advantage of right now with his left hand
19:11as I said earlier you don't want to be reaching out and this guy's bowing down
19:16making you miss every shot and if you try to jab him as his corner told Pacquiao to do
19:20he's just going to slip and hit you more
19:23all right Harold Glitterman what are the rules in California
19:27if a fight is stopped on an accidental because of an accidental buck
19:31okay
19:51Pacquiao is bleeding badly Sanchez is raking that eye with his left hand
19:57not only that he's got Sanchez right now acting like a duck a sitting duck coming right in front of
20:03him
20:04and because of the height disadvantage at this point for Pacquiao he can't duck
20:11great great let him up let him up sometimes the extra height is a disadvantage
20:20Manny Pacquiao is in unfamiliar territory and doesn't know what to do about it
20:24you must lower your hands to hit Sanchez
20:27and when you do he's going to get you
20:32all right let's see them go to work on Manny Pacquiao's right eye now
20:48okay
20:49oh
20:49close your eyes close your eyes
20:50nice and fun
20:51you're going to get your shoulder cut
20:52it's okay
20:53you see the eye
20:55I can see
20:56I'm not worried about that
21:00that is
21:01okay we'll see what we're doing in the first round okay
21:04okay
21:04okay
21:05now Manny don't get excited and get stupid out there all right don't get excited
21:09here's a look at the headbutt right there
21:13Pacquiao is coming in more or less a wreck Sanchez came underneath and up into his head
21:28well like I said if you had handicapped the odds of an accidental butt before the fight they would
21:32have been
21:34very short odds
21:36and now there's a low blow by Sanchez right on Pacquiao's cup
21:42and Marty Denkens sends Sanchez to a neutral corner
21:47that was not a hard low blow if it if low blows are hard
21:50no more next one I'm going to punt on
21:54and you heard what Dinkens said to Sanchez number one next one a point will be taken
22:07Sanchez is going right at the target and uh and Pacquiao's starting to get wild
22:12well I said earlier that he would be he could be a blood bank for the featherweight divisions
22:17I didn't realize it would be his own blood
22:35Pacquiao must turn his punches into the uppercuts
22:38upward
22:41there you go
22:47even though you're going to hit him in the chest a lot of the time and missed the head
22:50you must continue to throw him in that fashion because Sanchez is down there he's not upstairs
22:56stop right
22:58don't push him don't push him
23:04this is a crucial round because if that cut just happens to just relax and they stop the bleeding
23:11Pacquiao could be right back in the control of things if
23:17but given the location of the of the cut George you know which is under the brow
23:21at the top of the eyelid how much chance they can actually stop the flow of blood
23:26that's that's what we want to look for stop the blood this guy can get his aggression going because
23:32there's a little pain and stinging that goes along with being hit with those shots once you've been
23:35cut like that he's upset they can get that control you make Sanchez just start protecting himself
23:41right back in control
23:44okay landed that left uppercut now fires a left over the top he's starting to reach Sanchez a little
23:51bit with his punching power Sanchez very sturdy
23:59great stop we mentioned all of those top rated featherwaves who fought Sanchez none of them ever
24:08knocked him down one point one point one point limpio okay por favor limpio dinkin deducting a point
24:19from Sanchez for pushing Pacquiao's head back
24:28horrific combination by Pacquiao just as the bell sounded
24:49okay
24:49Manny keep using the jab for me okay yeah when you stay calm out there keep using the jab
25:02get a little bit closer and look at the uppercut and come back as a hook okay all right right
25:06right
25:07here I'm gonna tell you now don't retaliate I know what he's doing but don't you retaliate
25:15Sanchez has a history of this kind of stuff he was disqualified from one fight for low blows
25:24he's a roughhousing fighter and that bit of roughhousing cost him a point
25:31which probably means that the fight is at least even at this point let's go
25:39referee marty dinkin trying to keep things under control here as round four gets underway harold how
25:45do you have it scored so far jim i agree with larry merchant 100 percent maybe pacquiao evened that
25:50fight up to round three when marty dinkin took the point the first two rounds i get back to peter
25:55Sanchez he was too busy in the first round they were the better shots because pacquiao was bothered
26:00for the blood for second round but round three was a 10-8 round to free remaining pacquiao it makes
26:05it 28 28 all even in rounds two rounds to one Sanchez but it's the points we know by
26:13so when you have a guy who's regarded as having terrific talent it's always interesting to see
26:16him try to adjust to adversity pacquiao now battling unusual circumstances and the deficit of a big cut
26:23over his right eye and trying to adjust in such a way as to show growth as a fighter and
26:29just in the
26:29last couple of rounds george he seems to have gotten a better feel for what he needs to do yeah
26:34but he's
26:34still falling over the back of his shorter opponent in the statue he's got to bring those punches up or
26:40he's
26:40going to find himself bleeding again
26:52sanchez is very conservative he only takes what he he can see doesn't go after anything more than what
26:58he can see and he's determined to hit below the belt never seen anything like it another low blow
27:06and we may see a disqualification now the uppercuts are coming in from pacquiao great great coming up
27:16once she's thought that that's sanchez does not have any defense for those points
27:20and though the blood is flowing pacquiao seems less troubled by it than was the case in round two
27:28pacquiao if he comes up with a couple combinations i'm telling you we can see a different fight but then
27:34no time flat
27:49this is a pacquiao response i believe to a low blow
27:56and he may be injured
27:59he also is hit on the back of the neck or hit him right below the belt also that's
28:05that leg five minutes man get up i don't want you to lose five minutes he gets five minutes here
28:12to
28:12recover from get up the foul which has taken place but i'm not certain that pacquiao isn't in some way
28:19injured in the leg or the hip yeah i think that's true that it may be indeed the hip
28:28relax relax now there may be blood streaming from the left eye now of sanchez as well
28:39why is pacquiao walking around stiff-legged and hip injured like this george he's been hit
28:43below the belt more than twice maybe three times around that area ready next thing you know it just
28:48takes it out of you and it kind of sneaked up on him how much time he's obviously very angry
28:54about
28:54what's taking place and the referee is he seems not to notice these shots below the belt from him
29:00let's take another look at what happened here that's one yeah that hurt right that right right
29:07that hurts and then he hits him on top of the head and he hits him behind the head that's
29:10right
29:10you gotta listen okay i know what you're doing but you gotta listen okay
29:19dinkin trying to reassure pacquiao that he's up to date on what's going on in the fight too
29:31well you heard the word spoken by marty dinkin who warned pacquiao before the round not to retaliate
29:40pretty tough not to retaliate george but it's strange because the referee has not
29:44acknowledged this punch on the leg here that's got this guy crippled
29:50and pacquiao goes limping back to work he didn't take the full five minutes either
29:59great great
30:24that goes again hitting below the belt again look it's just too much
30:30boxing is back in san francisco in a down and dirty brawl
30:40no no no oh my god damn being manny pacquiao is getting right over the cold
30:52hey they're gonna they're taking two points already you gotta watch it he doesn't he wants to quit so don't
31:00foul
31:06don't worry your cut is not too bad don't worry about the cut
31:11you got your thing but be cool be calm about it
31:18all right this is just whether whether it's deliberate or accidental it's unacceptable
31:41so now after four rounds you can see that on harold letterman's card at least
31:47manny pacquiao has moved ahead by the two points which have been deducted from agapito sanchez for fouling
31:55and now sanchez begins to work to the body and do damage but once again he flirts with low blows
32:02sanchez has hit two low blows already that have not been acknowledged by dinkins
32:09pacquiao with a fast combination okay stop stop stop
32:15and sanchez it appears has come here willing to do almost anything to win the fight
32:20and unless the referee is able to do the right job he could catch a break you know
32:26he is he wants to do anything to win the fight but you can't do anything and everything to win
32:33a fight
32:33there are rules body shots by pacquiao
32:43that's the conclusion you come to in the ring that no one is going to give you anything pacquiao is
32:49learning the hard way you want it you're going to have to fight for what the referee is not going
32:53to
32:53give it to you nobody is more committed to clean fighting than you have been george in your view
32:59should sanchez already have been disqualified from this fight for a long time too many low blows
33:04because now you're only talking about hurting the fellow but permanently permanent damage down there so in
33:09your view this fight should already have been over with the winner and i agree with george the referee
33:14does not pay any attention but this is one of those old-fashioned throw it all fight
33:21this is this is a fight you would see on the piers of san francisco that's right exactly this is
33:28san francisco
33:39the referee just cannot see these low blows there's another one
33:46evidently there should be someone in the corner with the commission trying to supervise some of this
34:09that's right
34:22acquiao's superior hand speed in evidence there sanchez comes back with a blistering counter right hand
34:29Big action through five rounds in a fight that perhaps should not have continued.
34:35Floyd Mayweather warming up for our main event tonight.
34:38Later on this evening, Mayweather defending his supremacy at 130 pounds against Asus
34:43Chavez, political martyr in the sport who has waited a long time for his chance at a
34:48title and rests everything on his opportunity against Mayweather tonight.
35:09Okay, and this time, don't go back and watch out those, don't stay on the ropes, don't
35:15stay there, you got it, and fight clean.
35:23No more body punches, the corner is asking Sanchez not to throw body punches.
35:32That might be like asking the ocean to empty itself of water.
35:38After a relatively slow start, Manny Pacquiao threw just as many punches as Sanchez in round
35:43five, landed more, and with the help of penalty deductions, may now conceivably be building
35:49the lead in the fight.
35:55And I give Pacquiao credit for channeling his anger the right way.
35:59He has gotten more and more controlled with each passing round instead of more and more
36:03out of control.
36:05This is a painful situation for Pacquiao.
36:08He's been beaten below the belt, and the blood is dripping out of his face.
36:13You wonder how he has the energy to keep doing it.
36:16He's in tremendous shape.
36:17According to trainer Freddie Roach, he hasn't had a fighter who is better conditioned than
36:21Pacquiao.
36:22He gives Pacquiao a day off from the gym.
36:24Pacquiao goes out and runs five miles and rides the bike for an hour.
36:29Can't get him not to work.
36:30You know, and to give Pacquiao credit, he could have found a way to get out of this fight
36:35before the end of the fourth round and have it called a no contest.
36:40And once again, they clash heads as Sanchez pounds his forehead right into the middle of
36:46Pacquiao's face.
36:48Now, if the fight were to be stopped here, I suspect Pacquiao is ahead on the scorecard.
36:55Well, he's ahead on Harold Letterman's card by three points.
36:57I would think that the other cards shouldn't be all that far off.
37:00He's stopped.
37:01The fight has been stopped, and this goes to the scorecards.
37:06Hey, hey.
37:08And this round will not count, so we go to the scorecards through five.
37:12This round counts.
37:13They scored a partial round.
37:15When a fight is stopped in the middle, they scored a partial round, Jim.
37:19Dinkin doesn't think so.
37:20They do.
37:21All right.
37:23He's down the scorecard.
37:27So there's Agapita Sanchez, who was hoping to win the fight, looking toward buying a house
37:35in Santo Domingo, where he wants to retire someday.
37:38And, of course, Pacquiao's aspirations to stardom, we've already told you about.
37:43An intense young man from the Philippines.
37:47Got a rough passage here tonight.
37:49If there's justice in the world, he'll be ahead on these scorecards, and everything will
37:54turn out all right for him.
37:58There may be justice in the world, but there's not always justice in boxing, Jim.
38:03Yeah, well, we know that.
38:04That's for sure.
38:11No one can complain that they didn't see a fight tonight.
38:15Say what you want.
38:17This was a free-for-all.
38:18Let's take a look at some of the rough stuff that took place in the fight, George.
38:21In round two, there is the clash of heads, which led to the huge cut under Pacquiao's right
38:29eyebrow, and the spurting of blood, which blurred his vision, certainly for the rest of that
38:34round, and at least partially from that point forward.
38:37What we have seen here, Jim, is not the sweet science, but the sour science.
38:44In round three, there was the low blow, which prompted a five-minute delay, and then that
38:51was Sanchez pushing the inside of his glove against Pacquiao's face and losing a point for
38:55that.
38:56In round four, more low blows, another clash of heads, more low blows through the rest of
39:04the round, and that moment when Pacquiao was wrestled to the canvas and needed another
39:10long delay, and then, of course, in round six, we climax with the headbutt that ended
39:17the fight as Sanchez counted his forehead right into the middle of Pacquiao's face, and when
39:22Sanchez was lifted up on the shoulders of his cornermen, he was booed by everybody here
39:30in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, crowd of about 7,000, sellout or near sellout for
39:37San Francisco's return to championship-level boxing.
39:44And now the California State Commission is gathering scorecards and determining the outcome
39:50of the fight.
39:50Based on the parameters that Harold Letteman described to you, meaning that the partial
39:56round, the sixth, would be scored along with the other five.
39:59At least through five rounds, Harold, on your scorecard, you had Pacquiao up by three points,
40:04right?
40:04Okay, Jim.
40:05I've got it 58-54, four rounds to two, Manny Pacquiao.
40:10I thought, you know, just to go over it briefly, I thought he lost the first two rounds, but
40:15then he swept the next four, Agapito penalized two rounds, one in the third, one in the fourth.
40:20So, a four-point lead on my scorecard for Manny Pacquiao, 58-54, and just as you said,
40:27that's scoring six rounds.
40:36George, if you had a fighter in this weight class, would you put him in against Sanchez?
40:41All right, they're ready.
40:43No, not at all.
40:44All right, they're ready, guys.
40:45Let's go up to Michael Buffer for the official decision.
40:49Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please.
40:50Referee Marty Denking, after being told by the physician that the fight could no longer
40:56continue due to accidental headbutts suffered by Manny Pacquiao, the bout is halted in the
41:02sixth round.
41:03Under the rules, in accordance with the World Boxing Organization, the International Boxing
41:12Federation, and the American Boxing Commissions, the unified rules, the bout will go to the scorecards
41:19for the rounds completed, plus the sixth round in which the contest was halted.
41:24The scoring is as follows.
41:27Ricardo Baez scores the bout, 58-54.
41:30He has it for Pacquiao.
41:35Marshall Walker scores the bout, 57-55.
41:38He has it for Sanchez.
41:41Raul Caiz Sr. scores the bout, 56-56.
41:47It is a three-way split.
41:50The bout is officially declared a draw.
41:53Each champion will retain his title belt.
41:57The bout is a draw.
41:58Each champion retains his belt.
42:06Final CompuBox numbers.
42:08Once again, a statistical profile of the fight based on the punch count estimates of CompuBox
42:14experts, and you can see that Pacquiao landed 74 out of 247.
42:19Sanchez threw 102 more punches, but landed one less, thus the difference in connect percentage.
42:24That makes sense.
42:26Pacquiao was the more accurate of the two punchers coming in.
42:31Power shots.
42:32And once again, Pacquiao the more accurate.
42:35Sanchez throwing one more power shot.
42:37Sanchez used his jab considerably more than did the southpaw Pacquiao.
42:44And at the end of the day, as you heard, the three judges wind up evenly divided.
42:50One judge scoring it for Pacquiao by just the same number as did Harold Letterman.
42:55Another judge scoring it in favor of Sanchez, despite the point deductions, two of which
43:01were taken away from Sanchez during the fight.
43:04And then the third judge winds up with it all even.
43:08So, it's a technical draw.
43:12And as such, probably not a considerable blemish to the career of Pacquiao, which is the one
43:18which is developing star momentum and star power at this point.
43:23Larry Merchant makes a terrific point.
43:25You wonder how many 122 or 126 pound fighters, managers, and promoters are going to want to
43:31put them in against Agapito Sanchez after a display like this.
43:36Still to come tonight, our main event, which we expect to be a cleaner fight for sure, between
43:41Jesus Chavez and the man he has waited so long to face for the world championship at
43:46130 pounds.
43:47The estimable Floyd Mayweather Jr., one of the fights or one of the sports most talented and
43:55colorful performers.
43:57Mayweather versus Chavez still to come.
44:01But in the meantime, we remind you next Saturday night, live on HBO Pay-Per-View, the heavyweight
44:06championship rematch.
44:08Hasim Rahman defending the title he took this past April from Lennox Lewis down in South
44:13Africa.
44:14They'll meet again next Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Sports and Events Center in Las
44:19Vegas.
44:20Earlier this evening, I spoke to both fighters, and you're going to see that conversation in
44:24a moment, but first a preview of the fight.
44:31All the ingredients were there.
44:35The hungry challenger.
44:38The apathetic champion.
44:40A frenzied foreign stage.
44:43The recipe for an upset.
44:46A determined Hasim Rahman arrived in South Africa a month before the fight in order to
44:51acclimate himself to the rarefied Johannesburg air, while a seemingly unconcerned Lennox Lewis
44:56attended to his own priorities back in the USA.
44:59I'm definitely prepared.
45:01I even took a couple days out to do a movie.
45:03Unfortunately for Lewis, this production would have no happy ending.
45:07Rahman chases Lewis across the ring.
45:10He knocks him down with a thunderbolt to the right hand.
45:14He got a brand new heavyweight champion, and he's from the United States.
45:21Once the dust settled from his nightmare in Johannesburg, Lewis offered up a string of
45:25excuses, suggesting his titles are on loan to a thief.
45:29Rahman, meanwhile, claims to have found a permanent spot under Lewis's skin, and even questioned
45:34Lennox's sexuality in a radio interview.
45:36This particular insult turned a verbal shoving match into an all-out brawl on national television.
45:43The smoke has since cleared to reveal two men in search of much more than the heavyweight
45:48championship of the world.
45:50For Hasim Rahman, a continuing search for respect not just from Lewis, but from the entire boxing
45:56world.
45:56And for the now aging ex-champion Lewis, still reaching for a legacy, a defining moment that
46:02will secure his place in the history of the heavyweight division.
46:07And now we bring you back to ringside in San Francisco, where joining us from their respective
46:12purchase one week before the big fight are the heavyweight champion of the world, Hasim
46:17Rahman, from his training camp in Big Bear, California, and the man who now challenges to
46:23try to become a titleist for the third separate time in his career, Lennox Lewis in Las Vegas.
46:28Lennox, I'll start with you.
46:30After you and The Rock had your dust-up on national television on ESPN, a lot of respondents to
46:37ESPN's website, more than half in fact, said that they thought the scuffle was fake.
46:42Nothing is more interesting about a fight than when the two combatants genuinely dislike each
46:47other.
46:47What would you say to fans tonight to underline the assertion that what happened between you
46:52and Rock is for real?
46:54Yeah, I think it was definitely real.
46:57You know, when you get two big egos in one room, you know, something has to come out of
47:01it.
47:01And you're right, we did have a little tussling match, and, you know, it's just a precocit
47:06of what's going to happen next week.
47:08Hasim, you clearly got under Lennox's skin that evening.
47:11Do you genuinely dislike him for the things he's said about you since you knocked him out?
47:17Well, I definitely don't think he has the respect, you know, I plan on earning that
47:22on November 17th.
47:24But then again, you know, Lennox, you know, I don't plan to hear from him again in life.
47:28He says he's going to retire if he loses his fight.
47:30So he'll go back to Jamaica or Canada or England or wherever he claims he's from and
47:34just live his life.
47:35Did you try to get under his skin, Rock?
47:37Because for your purposes of winning the fight, it's better to fight an aggressive Lennox
47:42Lewis, who's looking to knock you out, than the guy who has stayed in his envelope and
47:47controlled some opponents from a distance.
47:50Well, personally, I don't think he can win either fight.
47:53I just think what happened was Emmanuel Stewart wasn't there to tell him everything to say,
47:57so he just told he lost it.
48:00Lewis, Lennox, will it be for you in this fight?
48:03Will it be the aggressive, opportunistic Lennox Lewis who knocked out Franz Botta and Michael
48:08Grant when they made mistakes against you?
48:10Or will it be the cautious counter-puncher who kept people like Holyfield and Tua at
48:14bay?
48:15Well, I think you get a combination of both.
48:18Basically, I'm just going to come out there with my arsenal, field punches.
48:21I can throw at any given moment and give it to Rock.
48:26Your detractors say that the knockout against Rachman goes back to your knockout against
48:31McCall, shows that you have a China chin, and suggests that at your advanced age, you may
48:36be finished.
48:37Can you still fight the way you used to, Lennox?
48:40Absolutely.
48:41You know, I would say on that same night, anybody could have knocked me out.
48:45You know, Rock threw a great punch, and I didn't see it.
48:49And, you know, I would say anybody would have knocked me out if they would have hit me the
48:53same way.
48:54Haseem, you keep talking about how you're going to knock Lennox out again, though some
48:58of us could see scenarios by which you might conceivably outbox him.
49:02Do you feel as though you have to knock him out to prove that what you did in Johannesburg
49:06was legit?
49:08Well, no.
49:09You know, I think that punch was enough.
49:12And I don't think, you know, everybody keeps focusing on the punch.
49:15But I landed right hands all night long against Lennox Lewis.
49:20I think that if I win a decision, it'll be totally based on the way Lennox fights.
49:24If he wants to fight passive, and I win a decision, I'm still a champ.
49:28He needs to take this fight for me.
49:29He the one who needs to prove everything.
49:31I don't know why everybody keeps turning this thing around like I have everything to prove.
49:35I'm the champ.
49:36He wants what I have.
49:38They are my belts, and I'm keeping them.
49:39So does that mean you don't have the same hunger that you took to South Africa when you
49:42felt like you had so much to prove?
49:44No, I definitely got more hunger because I feel like, you know, this fight, it's a make
49:51or break fight for both of us.
49:53But I'm saying that everybody turning it around on me, you know.
49:57I don't have it.
49:58I really don't have anything to prove, you know.
49:59They were talking about Lennox, which is all-time great right before the fight.
50:04He's getting better as he gets older.
50:05I even heard, I think I believe I heard you say he's getting better in his old age.
50:10I mean, as he gets older, he's getting better.
50:12Every time out, he's getting better, better, better.
50:14And then when we get to South Africa, and I crush him, now it's okay.
50:18Now he's getting old.
50:20Maybe his skills are deteriorating.
50:23Everything he went to court and said, you know, he just totally contradicted everything
50:26he said leading up into the fight.
50:28You know what, Rock?
50:29I had said that he was getting better.
50:31And then after what happened in Johannesburg, I decided that maybe he got too full of himself,
50:35read his press clippings, and had too much money in the bank.
50:38Is that what happened to you, Lennox?
50:41No, I was a bit lackadaisical in the fight.
50:45I didn't really take Rockman that well.
50:48But, you know, this fight I'm taking very seriously.
50:50He's got a week to go.
50:52And at the end of the week, he's going to be giving those belts back to me.
50:56Gentlemen, thank you both very much for your time.
50:58We'll look forward to seeing you both next week in Las Vegas.
51:01So, it will be coming to you live next Saturday night on HBO Pay-Per-View.
51:07The rematch.
51:08Will it be repeat for Hasim Rahman or revenge for Lennox Lewis?
51:14Rahman vs. Lewis 2 live next Saturday night, November 17.
51:18And what about you as a fan?
