00:00:00Even perhaps to some of the middleweights around, sooner or later, he'll get his shot.
00:00:05All right, let's turn our attention to the main event, because like most boxing fans, I've got a Jones to
00:00:10see it.
00:00:11I've got a Jones to talk about Roy Jones and his buddy Junior Jones.
00:00:15Now, obviously, as you told us earlier, you talk with Junior Jones about as much as with any of your
00:00:20other buddies in the sport.
00:00:22Junior has said that he believes he could fight Marco Antonio Barrera a thousand times,
00:00:26and because of his style superiority, he would win a thousand times.
00:00:30Any danger of overconfidence for Junior tonight?
00:00:33Yeah, it's always a danger of overconfidence, mainly because the guy, Barrera, is one of the better fighters for that
00:00:40light division.
00:00:41Marco Antonio Barrera is a very good skilled boxer.
00:00:44You can never underestimate a guy like Marco.
00:00:47However, Junior's main concern to me is that he's well-conditioned.
00:00:51If he comes to the fight well-conditioned, he's right.
00:00:53His style will make it very difficult for a person like Marco to beat him because of the height disadvantage
00:00:59and because of the right-hand punching power.
00:01:02So I can see where he would get that confidence from,
00:01:04but I wouldn't say that I would think a person could beat Marco Antonio Barrera a thousand times because of
00:01:10his style.
00:01:11Now, I think Junior wants to get into Marco Antonio Barrera's head with that kind of expressed confidence,
00:01:18but it's pretty difficult to get into the implacable calm of Barrera.
00:01:22It was partially because of that implacable calm of his, Larry, that the victory for Junior last November was seen
00:01:28as such a stunning upset.
00:01:30But when you look at how well Junior threw his punches in the fight, maybe it shouldn't have been that
00:01:35big a surprise.
00:01:35As we look back in hindsight now, what was it that so surprised us?
00:01:40Well, I think it was really shocking to a lot of people in the boxing world,
00:01:44and I think the reason for that is that there have been so many terrific Mexican and Mexican-American fighters
00:01:51in recent years,
00:01:52particularly in the lower weights,
00:01:54that when Barrera came on the scene, there was a natural assumption that said,
00:02:00well, here's another one, and this one can be the successor to Chavez.
00:02:05He was undefeated. He was marching through his opponents like a column of tanks.
00:02:10He looked like the real thing, and he was, until one right hand early in the fight with Junior Jones
00:02:18changed it all around
00:02:20and reminded us that once upon a time Junior Jones was thought to be the invincible one.
00:02:26So what we have tonight, Jim, is two invincible fighters that have proven to be invincible
00:02:32trying to regain their auras of invincibility.
00:02:36Which makes for a rematch well worth waiting for.
00:02:39We can only hope that it can match the spontaneous excitement of its predecessor.
00:02:44A night well worth revisiting, November 22, 1996.
00:02:58The referee says that he disqualified Barrera
00:03:04because the corner entered the ring just before the bell rang.
00:03:10The fight was over the referee's head.
00:03:14He wrongly said my corner entered the ring a second too fast.
00:03:18This is where we lost the fight.
00:03:20In one scene, I mean, he was clearly knocked out that fight, and that's the bottom line.
00:03:26So I don't think it takes my victory at all.
00:03:31Junior Poison Jones!
00:03:33It was a wild night of the unexpected,
00:03:36the first time Junior Jones and Marco Antonio Barrera battled.
00:03:39More stunning than the confusing ending
00:03:42was Jones' ability to check Barrera by going toe-to-toe
00:03:46with one of the ring's most dangerous bangers.
00:03:49Here Jones lands a right hand and a solid left hook.
00:03:52Well, I got him to the trail walk because I had quicker hands.
00:03:54He throws punches so wide that if I just come up nice and short,
00:03:58with quicker punches, I'm going to get there first regardless.
00:04:01There was no need to box him.
00:04:02I mean, I couldn't show him that much respect.
00:04:04Hard right hand by Peer.
00:04:06Barrera bombed back with his number one weapon,
00:04:09brutal hooks to the body,
00:04:10but the underdog never flinched.
00:04:13He wasn't that good of a body puncher, man.
00:04:15It was an average shot, I mean, an average hard shot.
00:04:17Working behind his strong jab,
00:04:20Poison set up a long night of relentless right-hand punishment.
00:04:24Junior Jones connected on all of his rights he gave me
00:04:27because I didn't have a strategy to follow.
00:04:30Blood trickling into Barrera's left eye.
00:04:33New urgency for the unbeaten Mexican.
00:04:35Down he goes.
00:04:36Hard right hand by Junior.
00:04:39Here's a guy, everybody says he's a legend in the making.
00:04:42He was invincible.
00:04:43I've seen him go down like that.
00:04:45The feeling I had was even greater than just winning the title.
00:04:48And a few seconds later, the unusual ending.
00:04:51Barrera had been billed as the unbeatable warrior.
00:04:54The naysayers gave his unsung opponent little chance.
00:04:57Along came Jones.
00:04:59Junior Jones has picked up a monumental upset
00:05:03over Marco Antonio Barrera
00:05:05and revived his star status.
00:05:08When he hit me, I felt impotent.
00:05:11I had no focus, no desire to fight.
00:05:14Barrera guarantees his only loss was a fluke.
00:05:17He says a personal distraction
00:05:18took the fight and assertiveness out of him.
00:05:22I was physically at 100%,
00:05:24but my concentration was gone.
00:05:26He saw me without my usual aggressiveness.
00:05:28There was an attempted kidnapping
00:05:30of my sister and niece before the fight,
00:05:32and that kept me off balance the whole time.
00:05:34But that's over.
00:05:37Barrera has moved his family now,
00:05:39and Mexican officials are investigating
00:05:41the apparent kidnapped attempt.
00:05:43Tonight, fierce determination fuels these instant rivals.
00:05:46Their rematch strategies are firm.
00:05:48A basic one-two, a basic jab, a basic hook,
00:05:53basic straight right hand.
00:05:54I think Junior has the height, reach, and the power,
00:06:01whereas all he has to do is work with basic fundamentals.
00:06:04Marco is shorter than Junior Jones.
00:06:08He has to fight head-on,
00:06:11take away the jab more than anything.
00:06:13The jab on the right hand
00:06:15is the only thing Junior Jones has.
00:06:20I'm going to do movement of the waist,
00:06:22to the side, and take away his right hand.
00:06:24I'm going to give him kidney shots all night.
00:06:26I'm going to fight inside.
00:06:29He doesn't have the skill to beat me.
00:06:30We fought 100 times.
00:06:32I'm going to win 100 times.
00:06:33He just can't beat me.
00:06:34Don't think about 100 fights.
00:06:36The next one is the last one,
00:06:37and I will win.
00:06:38His adjustment says,
00:06:39don't let Junior Jones hit with no right hands.
00:06:42In his best adjustments,
00:06:43he shouldn't even took the fight.
00:06:44Replay or fluke?
00:06:45Tonight, the answer awaits.
00:06:46With supremacy at 122 pounds,
00:06:49again, up for grabs.
00:06:53And we bring it back live to ringside
00:06:55at the Las Vegas Hilton.
00:06:56Tale of the tape.
00:06:57Marco Antonio Barrera, only 23 years old.
00:07:00He's been a professional fighter since he was 15.
00:07:04Half-inch height advantage for Junior Jones.
00:07:06They weighed in one pound apart.
00:07:08Tonight, Jones weighs 128,
00:07:10and Barrera has gone up to 134.
00:07:12That might make it a little tougher
00:07:13for Junior to score the repeat knockout.
00:07:15One-inch reach advantage for Jones,
00:07:17but because of their difference in styles,
00:07:18it may look like a longer reach advantage
00:07:21sometimes in the ring.
00:07:24Punch that numbers, Larry.
00:07:26And we'll see just how active
00:07:27these fighters were in the first fight.
00:07:29You can see that Junior Jones
00:07:30was having the best of it,
00:07:33kept Barrera on his heels,
00:07:35which is very unusual,
00:07:36and I think it was that first right hand
00:07:39that slowed down the charge of Barrera
00:07:41that set the tempo for the fight.
00:07:45We'll take a look at the jabs,
00:07:46and you can see how Jones controlled Barrera
00:07:49at a distance by throwing 40-plus jabs per round.
00:07:54Rules with the fight judge and pharmacist,
00:07:57Harold Letterman.
00:07:58The Junior Jones-Marco Antonio Barrera rematch
00:08:00is scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:08:02There is no standing eight count.
00:08:04The three-knockdown rule is in effect.
00:08:06Only the referee can stop the fight,
00:08:08and you can be saved by the bell
00:08:09in the 12th and final round only.
00:08:11Jim.
00:08:13All right, Harold.
00:08:14Harold, unaccustomed to coming into the ring first
00:08:17ever since his championship reign began
00:08:19a few years back.
00:08:22Marco Antonio Barrera gets that experience tonight
00:08:25as he is cast as the challenger here,
00:08:28trying to win back the title
00:08:30that he lost to Jones last November.
00:08:33He's gotten a good rest since November.
00:08:36He had been fighting very often,
00:08:39perhaps too often before that.
00:08:41The fight with Jones was his 10th defense
00:08:45in a year and a half.
00:09:03He seems to be smiling a little bit more
00:09:06than we used to see him.
00:09:08Jim, you would practically have to use pliers
00:09:12to open up his mouth
00:09:15to get a smile out of him before.
00:09:17He seems more relaxed.
00:09:19Maybe losing a fight has gotten him back into it.
00:09:28Yeah, well, he's made indication
00:09:29that he appreciates having a new challenge
00:09:31after 43 consecutive professional wins.
00:09:34The loss to Junior Jones, 31 KOs,
00:09:36many of them fashioned via his best weapon,
00:09:40vicious left hooks to the body.
00:09:46I mean, it's really interesting.
00:09:48He just seems more relaxed
00:09:49than we saw him in several fights before.
00:09:54Entering to raucous rock and roll strings.
00:10:04I want to tell an interesting story
00:10:06about Junior Jones.
00:10:08His manager who's behind him,
00:10:10Gary Gittleson,
00:10:11did not take a cut of his purse
00:10:14for the first fight with Barrera
00:10:16because he thought it was such a dangerous fight
00:10:18and Jones had never made any serious money.
00:10:22And right after that fight,
00:10:24as Jones won,
00:10:25all of the underwater vermin,
00:10:29sharks, hammerheads,
00:10:30and boxing came out from under the rocks
00:10:32and told Jones that his manager
00:10:35had no confidence in him
00:10:36and therefore he should leave the manager
00:10:39and join them
00:10:40and they'll surely make him
00:10:42millions and millions.
00:10:44The old state of boxing,
00:10:45divide and conquer like always.
00:10:48And Junior Jones, to his credit,
00:10:50didn't listen to the bottom feeders.
00:10:52His relationship with Gary Gittleson,
00:10:55stronger than ever.
00:10:56After Gittleson so nobly
00:10:58wouldn't take a cut
00:10:59from Junior's purse against Barrera.
00:11:01You saw the record.
00:11:0243 wins,
00:11:03just like Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:11:05Those two losses
00:11:06in two out of three fights back in 1994.
00:11:09Up to Michael Buffer
00:11:10for the official intro.
00:11:11And now, ladies and gentlemen,

00:12:39ladies and gentlemen,
00:12:41let's get ready to rumble!
00:12:49Introducing first,
00:12:50fighting out of the blue corner,
00:12:52wearing green, white, and red,
00:12:54and weighing 122 pounds,
00:12:56he brings a professional record
00:12:58into the ring of 43 victories,
00:13:0031 by knockout,
00:13:02with only one defeat.
00:13:04Ladies and gentlemen,
00:13:05here is the challenger
00:13:06from Mexico City,
00:13:09the former junior featherweight
00:13:12champion of the world,
00:13:14Marco Antonio Barrera!
00:13:24And his opponent across the ring,
00:13:26fighting out of the red corner,
00:13:27wearing white and black,
00:13:29and weighing 121 pounds.
00:13:31His professional record,
00:13:3343 victories.
00:13:3526 by knockout,
00:13:37with only two defeats.
00:13:38He comes to us from the streets
00:13:40of Brooklyn, New York,
00:13:42presenting the three-time
00:13:44world title holder
00:13:46and reigning WBO,
00:13:48junior featherweight champion
00:13:50of the world,
00:13:52Poison Junior Jones!
00:14:07Okay, look here now,
00:14:09if he goes right here,
00:14:10I'm not going to call it low,
00:14:12all right?
00:14:12He went through all the instructions
00:14:14in the dressing room.
00:14:15I expect a tough, clean fight
00:14:17protects itself at all times.
00:14:19Any questions from the challenger?
00:14:21Oh, it's okay.
00:14:22The champion.
00:14:23Let's get it on!
00:14:25The questions from ringside are,
00:14:29will Barrera be cautious,
00:14:32too cautious even,
00:14:33after getting such a beating
00:14:35in the first fight?
00:14:36Will Junior Jones be too eager
00:14:38to repeat it?
00:14:40I don't think Barrera
00:14:41will be too cautious
00:14:42because Barrera badly
00:14:43wants his title back.
00:14:46Round one begins.
00:14:48Chapter two,
00:14:50Junior Jones and
00:14:50Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:14:55Both fighters starting off
00:14:56working behind the jab,
00:14:58and Junior Jones loves that.
00:15:00He doesn't believe
00:15:01that Barrera can match jabs with him.
00:15:03And I see why he doesn't believe that.
00:15:05When you have such a reach advantage
00:15:06on a guy,
00:15:07you usually don't think
00:15:08that he can out-jab you.
00:15:14Barrera seems very calm here, though.
00:15:17Jones averaged 40 jabs per round
00:15:19in beating Barrera last fall in Tampa.
00:15:22You heard Larry say
00:15:23when he went through
00:15:24the punch stat numbers
00:15:25that that would be a key
00:15:26to Jones' performance tonight.
00:15:28Does he keep that stick
00:15:29in Barrera's face?
00:15:31Barrera seems very calm.
00:15:33He doesn't seem like
00:15:33he's worried at all
00:15:34about Junior.
00:15:35He doesn't seem concerned
00:15:36about Junior's power.
00:15:37All he wants to do
00:15:38is land a big punch on Junior.
00:15:40Barrera is very focused
00:15:42here tonight.
00:15:42Barrera getting to Jones' body
00:15:44for the first time.
00:15:45That's his trademark,
00:15:46his good body work
00:15:47throughout the fight.
00:15:48Fires the left hook
00:15:49to the body
00:15:50as Junior comes in.
00:15:54One of the first things
00:15:55I see that's different
00:15:57is he's trying to shoot
00:15:58the right over Jones' left.
00:16:00Yeah, he's making Junior
00:16:01worry about his right hand
00:16:02some here early.
00:16:03instead of coming out
00:16:04getting worried
00:16:05about Junior's right hand
00:16:06right away.
00:16:09Junior Jones,
00:16:10with the approval
00:16:10of the Nevada State
00:16:11Athletic Commission,
00:16:12got a big cortisone shot
00:16:13in the right hand
00:16:14prior to the fight.
00:16:15He says to us,
00:16:17I could break the right hand
00:16:18and I won't know it
00:16:19because of the cortisone.
00:16:20He's had hand problems
00:16:22before and Junior says
00:16:23all punchers
00:16:24have hand problems.
00:16:25And they do.
00:16:30Walker is fighting
00:16:31a very smart fight here
00:16:32and he seems to be
00:16:33very strong right now.
00:16:37But when he was
00:16:38at his best, Roy,
00:16:39he was dominating
00:16:41in the early rounds.
00:16:43He would just impose
00:16:45himself on his opponents.
00:16:46He's being much calmer.
00:16:47You're right.
00:16:48Can he win that way?
00:16:50Yes, he can.
00:16:51His thing is to get used
00:16:52to seeing Junior's punches,
00:16:54wear Junior's body down,
00:16:55and then he'll try
00:16:56to overpower Junior.
00:16:57He can't just walk in
00:16:58on Junior now
00:16:58and overpower him
00:16:59because he knows
00:17:00that Junior is far
00:17:01too strong for that.
00:17:02If you're a fan
00:17:03of HBO's
00:17:04Boxing After Dark
00:17:05where Roy Jones Jr.
00:17:06is the regular
00:17:07expert commentator,
00:17:08you'll remember
00:17:09that that series
00:17:10kicked off
00:17:11with a brilliant
00:17:12Barrera performance
00:17:14against Kennedy McKinney
00:17:15in a very tough fight
00:17:16February of 1996
00:17:18in the Forum.
00:17:19Kennedy McKinney
00:17:20was the man
00:17:21who kept Junior Jones
00:17:22from making the Olympic
00:17:23team in 1988.
00:17:26What is Barrera doing
00:17:28to keep Jones
00:17:29from shooting
00:17:30that right hand?
00:17:31It looks like he's
00:17:31holding his left
00:17:32pretty high.
00:17:33Much higher than before.
00:17:34Much higher than I've
00:17:35ever seen him
00:17:36hold his left hand.
00:17:37But that's what you call
00:17:37making adjustments
00:17:38to win the fight.
00:17:39This shows you
00:17:40that he is here
00:17:40to win this fight tonight.
00:17:42Tactical adjustments
00:17:43in the first round
00:17:44by Marco Antonio Barrera
00:17:45and Junior Jones
00:17:47with much to think about
00:17:48as the first three minutes
00:17:50come to a close.
00:17:51And when we go
00:17:52to Barrera's corner
00:17:53where Spanish
00:17:53is the preferred language,
00:17:55our interpreter
00:17:55is Ray Torres.
00:18:04You've got to pressure him
00:18:06without getting
00:18:06to the exchanges.
00:18:08You've got to faint him out.
00:18:09Don't exchange punches
00:18:11with him.
00:18:12We have a lot
00:18:13for a long time,
00:18:14Marcos.
00:18:15You've got to be loose.
00:18:16You've got to be relaxed.
00:18:18You've got to be
00:18:19sure of yourself.
00:18:20And step.
00:18:21Don't stand right
00:18:22in front of this guy.
00:18:23Okay?
00:18:24All right, baby.
00:18:25You're working beautiful.
00:18:25This one's got to be up here,
00:18:26baby.
00:18:27How do you feel?
00:18:28Take a deep breath
00:18:29and let it out slow.
00:18:30You're boxing beautiful
00:18:31out there.
00:18:32Just start picking up.
00:18:33You're boxing beautiful.
00:18:34Remember,
00:18:35everything off that chair.
00:18:36There we go.
00:18:37Second is out.
00:18:38Primary voice
00:18:39in Jones' corner
00:18:41is that of Tommy Brooks,
00:18:42his trainer.
00:18:44Lou Duva
00:18:44working as a second
00:18:45in that corner tonight.
00:18:46And of course,
00:18:47you'll hear from him.
00:18:48Duva is Tommy Brooks'
00:18:50father-in-law.
00:18:56And of course,
00:18:57you'll hear more
00:18:58of Lou Duva
00:18:58when you tune to HBO
00:19:00tomorrow night
00:19:00to watch the delayed broadcast
00:19:02of Whitaker
00:19:03against De La Hoya.
00:19:06One adjustment
00:19:06that has proven
00:19:07to be good
00:19:08was what we talked
00:19:08about Borrell's left hand.
00:19:10The only good right hand
00:19:11that he got caught
00:19:12with in that first round
00:19:13was that one
00:19:14right there at the end.
00:19:16His strategy may be
00:19:17to make this fight
00:19:19go a distance
00:19:20and believing
00:19:21that he can
00:19:22tire Jones out
00:19:23and get him
00:19:24in the second half
00:19:25of the fight.
00:19:25Like I told you,
00:19:27Jones' strength will,
00:19:29I mean,
00:19:29Jones' thing will be
00:19:30if he's conditioned
00:19:31for this long fight
00:19:32or not.
00:19:33That's the way
00:19:34I think that
00:19:34a Marco Antonio Barrero
00:19:36should have fought
00:19:36Julian Jones
00:19:37the first time.
00:19:38Well,
00:19:38Barrero only threw
00:19:3936 punches
00:19:40by CompuBox
00:19:42statistics
00:19:42in round number one.
00:19:44Landed 12 out of 36.
00:19:45Jones threw 79,
00:19:46and that may be
00:19:47the reason
00:19:47that Harold Letterman,
00:19:48as you saw,
00:19:49scored the round
00:19:50for Junior Jones.
00:19:50Jones landed only
00:19:5110 of 62 jabs
00:19:53in the first round,
00:19:54but throwing it
00:19:55is half the battle.
00:19:56A bloody nose
00:19:57for Jones.
00:20:07Can that affect
00:20:08his breathing, Roy?
00:20:09I don't think so,
00:20:10but I don't know
00:20:11because I never really
00:20:11had a bloody nose
00:20:12in a fight,
00:20:13so I couldn't tell you
00:20:13if it would be effective
00:20:15to his breathing.
00:20:15Never had a bloody nose.
00:20:17All those amateur fights,
00:20:1930-some-odd professional fights,
00:20:20never had a bloody nose,
00:20:21huh?
00:20:21No, not yet.
00:20:26Don't you think
00:20:26you're missing something?
00:20:28I was wondering about that.
00:20:31That was a good
00:20:32right uppercut
00:20:32by Marco Antonio Barrero.
00:20:35And you can see the blood
00:20:36flowing from both nostrils
00:20:38of Junior Jones
00:20:39as Jones continues
00:20:39to pump the jab,
00:20:41pump the jab,
00:20:42and try to keep
00:20:43too busy for Barrera.
00:20:45There's a right hand
00:20:46over the top,
00:20:47partially blocked.
00:20:47Barrera's fighting
00:20:48a very smart fight here.
00:20:49He's not going in
00:20:51and making it
00:20:52an early slugfest
00:20:53with his strong puncher.
00:20:54He's trying to let
00:20:55the puncher
00:20:55wear himself down.
00:20:56He's blocking
00:20:57a lot of punches,
00:20:58and he's also hitting
00:20:59Junior to the body.
00:21:00That's very smart
00:21:01for Barrera to do.
00:21:02Junior should invest
00:21:03in some body shots
00:21:03himself here.
00:21:08Here's one of those
00:21:09hard left hooks
00:21:10to the body by Barrera.
00:21:12Number one weapon.
00:21:19Another good left
00:21:20to the body by Barrera.
00:21:22Derrickon Jr.
00:21:22throwing a good
00:21:23body shot right there.
00:21:27Jones coming back
00:21:28with combinations.
00:21:29Barrera shooting
00:21:30the jab up top.
00:21:31Both men spending
00:21:32some time on body
00:21:33punching here
00:21:34in round number two.
00:21:35Tactical battle
00:21:36underway.
00:21:37Barrera punctuates
00:21:38the round with
00:21:39another hard left hook
00:21:40to the body,
00:21:41and then chases Jones
00:21:42to the ropes,
00:21:43and takes a left hook
00:21:44from Jones for his
00:21:45trouble.
00:21:46There was still
00:21:46some great body
00:21:47pressure at the end
00:21:48of that round by Barrera.
00:21:53Now, stand right
00:21:54in front of this guy.
00:21:55I told you,
00:21:55you can't stand
00:21:56in front of this guy.
00:21:57All right?
00:21:58Here you go, Don.
00:22:00Look at that.
00:22:04You can't stand
00:22:04right in front of this guy.
00:22:05Okay?
00:22:06I need you to throw
00:22:06each side to take
00:22:07a half step.
00:22:08Move weights.
00:22:09All right?
00:22:10It's caving on this
00:22:11side, but that's
00:22:12going to mean it's
00:22:12okay right now,
00:22:13but I think it's
00:22:13busted.
00:22:14All right, now,
00:22:14look.
00:22:15I think Jones
00:22:16was moving.
00:22:22Keep, bend down
00:22:23and keep throwing
00:22:23punches.
00:22:25You've got to keep
00:22:25your left hand up
00:22:26and keep punching
00:22:27with it.
00:22:31So you can do
00:22:32some harm to him.
00:22:33You need to throw
00:22:34a lot of punches,
00:22:34especially that left.
00:22:35you can do some harm to him.
00:22:36You can do some harm to him.
00:22:38Come on.
00:22:39There you can see
00:22:41playing more defense
00:22:42and punching off of that
00:22:44defense with a good
00:22:45body punch.
00:22:47Barrera says that
00:22:48if he wins his title back,
00:22:49he'll be perfect again.
00:22:51If he can fight more
00:22:53rounds like that,
00:22:54he'll be perfect again
00:22:55by his standards.
00:22:58Well, a lot of people
00:22:59doubted whether
00:22:59Marco Antonio Barrera
00:23:01could legitimately
00:23:02change his game
00:23:03coming in here,
00:23:04but so far,
00:23:05he's been as good
00:23:05as his word.
00:23:06He has fought
00:23:07differently than he did
00:23:08in Tampa in November.
00:23:09And he's fighting
00:23:09a very brilliant fight here.
00:23:14Right hand over the top
00:23:15by Barrera.
00:23:17Junior getting a tiny bit
00:23:18more tentative
00:23:19with the jab
00:23:20because of those
00:23:21right hand counters
00:23:22by Barrera.
00:23:24And a little bit desperate
00:23:26with that right hand.
00:23:28He's getting a little bit
00:23:29frustrated because
00:23:30he can't hit Barrera
00:23:31like he did in the first fight.
00:23:34His defense Barrera
00:23:35has brought to this fight,
00:23:36it's making a big difference
00:23:38on the way that this fight
00:23:38should come out.
00:23:39Barrera's never been known
00:23:40for head movement,
00:23:41but he's had a little bit
00:23:42of it here tonight.
00:23:59early in the bout in Tampa,
00:24:01Junior Jones was landing
00:24:02right crosses.
00:24:03Early in the bout here,
00:24:05he's mostly missing
00:24:06right crosses.
00:24:06Another thing that I can tell
00:24:08you is good for Barrera
00:24:09is that every time
00:24:10he makes Junior miss
00:24:11with a big punch,
00:24:11he tries to counter.
00:24:13What can Barrera do
00:24:15to counter what,
00:24:17I'm sorry,
00:24:18Jones do to counter
00:24:19what Barrera's changes are?
00:24:20Well, it's difficult
00:24:21because that was
00:24:22his best punch.
00:24:23What he shouldn't be doing
00:24:24or what he should have done
00:24:25already was start
00:24:26faking the jab
00:24:27and coming around
00:24:28Barrera's right hand
00:24:29with a left hook.
00:24:30That would offset
00:24:31his right hand
00:24:32or get Barrera's mind
00:24:33off of his right hand.
00:24:35Then he would be able
00:24:35to land the right hand.
00:24:36So fake the left jab
00:24:37up top and then hook
00:24:38to the body?
00:24:39No, fake the left jab,
00:24:40make Barrera reach
00:24:41for the left jab,
00:24:41then hook around
00:24:42the right hand of Barrera.
00:24:43Uh-huh.
00:24:44He's saying hook
00:24:45off the jab.
00:24:47Right.
00:24:48This will start,
00:24:49make Barrera start,
00:24:50stop looking for
00:24:51the right hand
00:24:51and want to block the hook.
00:24:52But we don't know
00:24:53if that's in his arsenal.
00:24:55Well, if it ain't,
00:24:56then it's going to be
00:24:57a long night for him.
00:25:01By and large,
00:25:03only the really good fighters
00:25:04can hook well
00:25:05off the jab.
00:25:06Right, boy?
00:25:06By and large,
00:25:07you got a point there.
00:25:08But Junior is
00:25:09a pretty good fighter.
00:25:11He's got a lot of technique,
00:25:12no question about it.
00:25:13He worked with
00:25:13Joey Fariello
00:25:14for many years
00:25:15before the Brooklyn
00:25:16trainer died.
00:25:17He gives Fariello
00:25:18credit for having
00:25:18taught him
00:25:19boxing technique.
00:25:22I think he may be
00:25:23depending on his right hand
00:25:24a little bit too much
00:25:25tonight.
00:25:26And obviously,
00:25:27much of the Barrera game plan
00:25:29aimed at taking away
00:25:31Junior's right hand.
00:25:32First take away the jab,
00:25:33then take away
00:25:34the right cross.
00:25:43Barrera seems to be
00:25:44in control right now.
00:25:46Straight right hand
00:25:47by Barrera.
00:25:47Exactly what I was
00:25:48about to say.
00:25:51Thank you, Roy.
00:25:52And incidentally,
00:25:53tomorrow night
00:25:54at 10.30,
00:25:55your chance to see
00:25:56last Saturday's
00:25:57Whitaker-De La Hoya fight.
00:25:58If, in fact,
00:25:59you missed it
00:25:59the first time around,
00:26:00decide for yourself
00:26:01who really want
00:26:03opinion at ringside
00:26:04widely divergent.
00:26:06We'll have the fight
00:26:07and both fighters
00:26:08with us in the studio
00:26:09right here on HBO
00:26:10at 10.30 Eastern
00:26:11tomorrow night.
00:26:13Three, four, five,
00:26:14and take a half step
00:26:15either way, okay?
00:26:17All right.
00:26:21Look,
00:26:23when he's firing
00:26:24when he's stepping,
00:26:25you got to keep
00:26:26your hands up
00:26:26just like you worked
00:26:27on in the gym, okay?
00:26:29All right.
00:26:29Keep them hands up.
00:26:30And I need three,
00:26:34even if it's
00:26:35the last couple
00:26:35of seconds,
00:26:36don't exchange
00:26:38punches with him.
00:26:39You can get him
00:26:40real easy
00:26:40by outboxing him.
00:26:44It's really interesting
00:26:45that Barrera's corner
00:26:47has prepared him
00:26:48for a boxing contest
00:26:51which would seem
00:26:52so out of character
00:26:53from the Barrera
00:26:55up to now.
00:26:56A lot of times
00:26:57when a guy
00:26:58gets so many wins
00:27:00under his belt,
00:27:00they start to depend
00:27:01on going in
00:27:02and overpowering
00:27:03everybody.
00:27:04And I think
00:27:05Marco probably
00:27:05had to start out
00:27:06as a boxer
00:27:07because the first
00:27:08time I watched him
00:27:09fight, that's what
00:27:10struck me so well,
00:27:11his boxing ability.
00:27:12After having so many
00:27:13wins, they start to
00:27:14depend on their power
00:27:15and their character.
00:27:16Well, if I recollect
00:27:19correctly, it seems
00:27:20that his boxing
00:27:21heroes was
00:27:22Salvador Sanchez,
00:27:25the great featherweight
00:27:26who died prematurely
00:27:28and he was a boxer
00:27:29puncher as well as
00:27:31Chavez.
00:27:31So he's doing his
00:27:32Sanchez tonight.
00:27:34There you go.
00:27:34That's what he should have
00:27:35been doing the first time.
00:27:37Salvador Sanchez is in
00:27:39your top five list,
00:27:40didn't he, Roy?
00:27:40Most definitely.
00:27:45Junior Jones pressing a
00:27:47little bit with the
00:27:47right hand.
00:27:48You can see that the
00:27:49blood is trickling from
00:27:50Jones' nose again as
00:27:51Barrera stepped out here
00:27:52into round four and
00:27:53threw two accurate jabs to
00:27:54start it off and just to
00:27:56get Jones' nose bleeding
00:27:57again.
00:28:00Jones' accuracy rate way
00:28:02down from his appearance
00:28:04against Barrera in
00:28:05November.
00:28:05And now, as Jones backs
00:28:07off and creates more
00:28:08distance, his left jab is
00:28:10easily blocked by
00:28:11Barrera's glove.
00:28:12And right there, you saw
00:28:12how Barrera is meeting
00:28:13his left jab.
00:28:14That's when he should,
00:28:15oh, good body shot.
00:28:16That's when he should
00:28:17reach around, fake the
00:28:18jab, reach around the
00:28:19right hand and land the
00:28:20hook.
00:28:27Barrera keeping the
00:28:28right hand up, blocking
00:28:29most of the left jabs.
00:28:32Let's see if at some
00:28:33point Junior Jones begins
00:28:34to hook off of it.
00:28:35as Roy Jones suggests he
00:28:37should.
00:28:37Right hand over the top
00:28:38almost landed.
00:28:40Barrera coming back calmly
00:28:41with a couple of jabs.
00:28:43Junior's doing something
00:28:44that I've been accused of
00:28:45doing, but I don't do it
00:28:47that way.
00:28:47And when he throws his jab,
00:28:49he's only throwing it to
00:28:50set up the right hand.
00:28:53This is a very calm,
00:28:55professional performance
00:28:56through four rounds by
00:28:57Barrera.
00:28:58Now Jones finally catches
00:28:59him with a right hand.
00:29:01But Barrera goes back to
00:29:02his business and sticks the
00:29:04jab again.
00:29:05And even when he's getting
00:29:06caught with the right hand,
00:29:07he's still throwing great
00:29:08counter punches, Barrera.
00:29:09And he's gotten in another
00:29:10one of those good left hooks
00:29:11to the body in this round.
00:29:13They add up over the course
00:29:15of the fight.
00:29:15Yes, they do.
00:29:21And Jones is starting to get him
00:29:23in his sights in the last 45
00:29:25seconds.
00:29:26Yes, he is with that right
00:29:28hand.
00:29:28He's landed some good right
00:29:29hands.
00:29:30But they don't seem to have
00:29:31much effect on Marco.
00:29:33There was a jab off the hook.
00:29:35Hook off the jab.
00:29:37Hook off the jab by Jones.
00:29:39Barrera coming back to the body.
00:29:41His corner told him not to trade
00:29:42punches in the closing seconds
00:29:43of the round.
00:29:44It's a hard instinct for him
00:29:46to battle.
00:29:47Now I think Junior's waking up
00:29:49a little bit.
00:29:50Yeah.
00:29:57Don't lower your left hand.
00:30:00Everything is fine.
00:30:03Don't lower your left hand.
00:30:04And if you throw it out there,
00:30:06make sure it comes straight back.
00:30:09With the jab, that's all you
00:30:10got to do.
00:30:11That jab is working beautifully.
00:30:12You're making him miss his jab
00:30:13and you're contouring real well.
00:30:16And what about that jab to the
00:30:17liver?
00:30:18It's a good body shot.
00:30:21I don't know what the score is.
00:30:23Don't worry about it.
00:30:24You're all right, though.
00:30:24You're boxing.
00:30:25What are you doing?
00:30:25Listen, you knock the guy out,
00:30:27you don't have to worry about it.
00:30:27Come on.
00:30:28Okay?
00:30:30You're hitting him with some
00:30:31beautiful right hands.
00:30:32But it got to come off the tail.
00:30:34Okay.
00:30:35Throw your right hand a little
00:30:36lower.
00:30:37You're throwing it too high.
00:30:38Hit him in the neck.
00:30:39Okay.
00:30:39Okay.
00:30:43Well, we've had four rounds.
00:30:44Both fighters making adjustments
00:30:46for each other.
00:30:48The fight begins now, I guess.
00:30:50Yes, it does.
00:30:51Harold Letterman, how do you have
00:30:53it scored through four?
00:30:54Jim, 38 to 38, two rounds apiece.
00:30:57I thought Junior Jones outboxed him
00:30:59certainly in rounds one and four
00:31:00with that left jab.
00:31:01But I got to tell you,
00:31:02Junior Jones is trying the patience
00:31:04of referee Mills Lane.
00:31:06He constantly rabid punches
00:31:07Barrera with that right hand.
00:31:09In other words, the right hand
00:31:10lands behind Barrera's back,
00:31:12hits him in the brainstem,
00:31:13and Mills is getting fed up with it.
00:31:16What's your take on Mills Lane
00:31:18as a referee, Roy?
00:31:19I think Mills Lane is one of the
00:31:20better referees in the boxing business.
00:31:23What fighters want is a guy
00:31:24who's decisive, right?
00:31:25And a guy who's there and there
00:31:27to make sure he's watching
00:31:28over everything.
00:31:29Don't let stuff go for one fighter
00:31:31and let it get out of hand,
00:31:32then you can't do nothing about it.
00:31:34And when the other guy starts,
00:31:35you want to finally wake up
00:31:36and say, okay, we're going
00:31:37to stop this here when you've
00:31:38let one guy get away with it
00:31:39all night.
00:31:39That's how fights get out of hand.
00:31:41Mills Lane usually keeps good
00:31:42control of a fight.
00:31:43It's very even-handed.
00:31:44Roy Jones, or Junior Jones,
00:31:46I should say, landing a right hand.
00:31:49And then as Mills Lane
00:31:51tried to break him, Junior came back
00:31:52with an uppercut.
00:31:53I understand.
00:31:53I understand.
00:31:54What's going on?
00:31:54Mills says, I understand.
00:31:56Yo entiendo.
00:31:57And what I think he means here
00:31:59is that they're supposed
00:32:00to protect themselves
00:32:01at all times.
00:32:02He told them that,
00:32:03and that's what he's telling
00:32:03them he understands.
00:32:12It was the first four rounds.
00:32:14Barrera has bothered Junior Jones
00:32:16a lot with his jab.
00:32:19The bull has turned
00:32:20into the matador.
00:32:25The right hand shot
00:32:26by Barrera in counter.
00:32:30Junior getting him closer
00:32:31with his jab, right?
00:32:32Both fighters are throwing
00:32:33a good jab here now.
00:32:35Now this is getting to be
00:32:36a real boxing match.
00:32:41Time.
00:32:42Oh, that was outstanding.
00:32:42Junior trying to time
00:32:43that right hand.
00:32:44He has shortened the distance
00:32:46between himself and Barrera.
00:32:48You okay?
00:32:49You okay?
00:32:50All right, come on.
00:32:51Come on, come on, come on.
00:32:52Mills Lane working awfully hard
00:32:53in this fifth round.
00:32:55He wants to keep control
00:32:57of the fight,
00:32:57which is very good
00:32:58for him to do.
00:32:59That was about keeping
00:33:00their heads apart, right?
00:33:01No, that was a low blow
00:33:02by Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:33:03As they came close,
00:33:05Barrera, by coming close,
00:33:07interrupted the arc
00:33:08of Jones' punch
00:33:10below the belt.
00:33:12Ho, ho, when he's got back.
00:33:13Ho, ho.
00:33:14Clean.
00:33:14I'm sorry.
00:33:16Jones interrupted
00:33:17the arc of Barrera's punch.
00:33:21Barrera consciously
00:33:22going to the body
00:33:23in the fifth round.
00:33:25Consciously and conscientiously.
00:33:27Junior Jones shortening
00:33:29the distance between himself
00:33:30and Barrera to make
00:33:30his jab more effective
00:33:32and give him a better chance
00:33:33of landing one of those
00:33:34right hands over the top.
00:33:35And he landed one there.
00:33:39Question, Roy.
00:33:40Having tasted the power
00:33:42of Jones, you think Barrera
00:33:43is more steeled
00:33:45to accept that power
00:33:48now in this fight?
00:33:49Yes, he is.
00:33:49He's already tasted the power
00:33:50and he figures,
00:33:51I've already gotten hit with it.
00:33:52Why not?
00:33:53Why worry about it now?
00:33:55Well, Junior got in
00:33:57two right hands
00:33:57in the last 30 seconds
00:33:59of that round.
00:34:00As good as any
00:34:01he's thrown so far.
00:34:02Pull it out with your head
00:34:02up in the air.
00:34:03I can't have that.
00:34:04We can't have that.
00:34:05Where the bucket?
00:34:06Good bucket.
00:34:06We can't have that.
00:34:07All right, look at this.
00:34:08Come on, last piece.
00:34:15All right, hey,
00:34:17we can't have that.
00:34:18Now, look, that two,
00:34:19three, or four jabs
00:34:20is working beautiful, man.
00:34:21All right?
00:34:22Now, look, when you finish
00:34:23your combination, boss,
00:34:25I need you to fire that shot
00:34:26to the body behind you,
00:34:27okay?
00:34:28But remember...
00:34:31Marco, all you need
00:34:32is use intelligence.
00:34:34That jab is doing it
00:34:35for you.
00:34:35That's all you need.
00:34:39The basic thing
00:34:40is the jab, Marco.
00:34:43Don't let him breathe,
00:34:44Marco.
00:34:53Right there,
00:34:54you heard him tell Marco,
00:34:55don't let him breathe.
00:34:56He's keeping the pressure
00:34:57on Junior.
00:34:58He's staying closer to Junior,
00:34:59so Junior's forced to fight
00:35:00for a full three minutes
00:35:01because usually in boxing,
00:35:03the puncher will be the guy
00:35:04who wears out first.
00:35:06Round six of a scheduled 12.
00:35:09Over the second time
00:35:11in a week,
00:35:11an interesting scoring challenge
00:35:13for the Nevada Athletic Commission
00:35:15judges who are at ringside
00:35:16here tonight.
00:35:21If you didn't get a chance
00:35:22to see Delahoy Whitaker
00:35:23last week,
00:35:24and you're going to see it
00:35:24for the first time
00:35:25tomorrow night,
00:35:27and you may have gleaned this
00:35:28from reading the newspaper articles,
00:35:30Scorer's Nightmare.
00:35:42I think Junior Jones' corner
00:35:44feels as though
00:35:45he'll have to have a knockout
00:35:46to really get a decision
00:35:47here in this fight.
00:35:48They're not looking
00:35:49to win the decision.
00:35:50They want a knockout.
00:35:51Why should that be?
00:35:53Well, because just like
00:35:54in last week's fight,
00:35:55a lot of people feel
00:35:56as though the crowd
00:35:57can be a big barrier
00:35:58on the judges.
00:36:00When the crowd sees Junior
00:36:01do something here,
00:36:02they don't have a reaction to it.
00:36:03But when Barrera does
00:36:04anything close to something,
00:36:05they're going to have
00:36:06a big reaction to it.
00:36:07Do you think the crowd
00:36:08won the fight for Delahoya
00:36:09last week?
00:36:10I don't think the crowd
00:36:11won the fight for Delahoya.
00:36:12That fight I thought
00:36:13could have went
00:36:13basically either way.
00:36:14It's just that,
00:36:15in my opinion,
00:36:15I think your thing is
00:36:17to beat the champion.
00:36:18Good right hand by Barrera.
00:36:20Great exchange.
00:36:22And two left hooks
00:36:23to the body,
00:36:23helping him to back Jones off
00:36:25at the end of the exchange.
00:36:28Another thing I want to add
00:36:29is that I know Delahoya
00:36:30didn't feel comfortable
00:36:31about the fight
00:36:32because he said quickly
00:36:33he wants to fight
00:36:34Pernell Whitaker again
00:36:35because he wants
00:36:36to beat Pernell Whitaker.
00:36:37And I admire that
00:36:38in any champion.
00:36:40Delahoya has been
00:36:41very forthcoming
00:36:42about the possibility
00:36:43of giving Whitaker
00:36:44a rematch.
00:36:45His promoter, Bob Arum,
00:36:46doesn't necessarily
00:36:47feel that way.
00:36:48Well, because Bob
00:36:48doesn't feel like
00:36:49the champion.
00:36:50Bob is the guy
00:36:50who's looking at it
00:36:51from the business aspect.
00:36:52It was an ugly fight
00:36:53to him,
00:36:54and he probably doesn't
00:36:55want to see it again.
00:36:56But I can understand
00:36:57both of the fighters.
00:36:58Neither fighter
00:36:59dominated the fight,
00:37:00which is why both fighters
00:37:01want to come back
00:37:01because they want
00:37:02somebody to know
00:37:03that they are
00:37:03the better fighter.
00:37:04But Delahoya
00:37:05is behaving as
00:37:06an honorable sportsman,
00:37:07which he is.
00:37:08Like I said,
00:37:09he showed me
00:37:09a lot of character
00:37:10when he said
00:37:11he is willing to
00:37:12and more ready
00:37:12to do it again
00:37:13because that showed me
00:37:14that he wasn't pleased
00:37:15with the way
00:37:15he got the decision.
00:37:16He wasn't pleased
00:37:17with his victory.
00:37:18Even though he probably
00:37:18pulled it out,
00:37:19he couldn't win either way.
00:37:20I don't know.
00:37:21I wouldn't have taken
00:37:21the fight because,
00:37:22like I said,
00:37:23Whitaker was champion.
00:37:24But that showed that
00:37:25Delahoya has character
00:37:26and he wants the world
00:37:27to see that he's the best
00:37:28so he wants to beat
00:37:29Whitaker
00:37:29and prove the point.
00:37:31Meanwhile,
00:37:31back here at the
00:37:32Las Vegas Hilton,
00:37:33Marco Antonio Barrera
00:37:35lands another left
00:37:36to the body
00:37:37and more and more
00:37:38his main weapon
00:37:39is working in the fight.
00:37:40And as we come
00:37:41to the midpoint
00:37:42of the fight,
00:37:43Jones looked
00:37:44much worse
00:37:45for the wear.
00:37:46Like I said,
00:37:47the puncher's
00:37:48usually the guy
00:37:48that would wear down.
00:37:49That was a body shot
00:37:50that hurt
00:37:50with Keenan Jones.
00:37:51This is a big round
00:37:53for Barrera
00:37:54as the bell sounds
00:37:55at the midway point
00:37:56of the fight.
00:37:57Watch the graphics
00:37:58at the bottom
00:37:59of your screen
00:37:59for the upcoming
00:38:00boxing schedule
00:38:01here on HBO.
00:38:07All right,
00:38:08that one or two
00:38:08ain't getting it, man.
00:38:09He's getting hip
00:38:09to that stuff.
00:38:10And look,
00:38:11check your balance now, baby.
00:38:13You're getting hit
00:38:13with dumb stuff.
00:38:14The guy's falling away
00:38:16hitting you
00:38:16with all crazy stuff.
00:38:18Here's my piece.
00:38:21Go ahead, Doug.
00:38:24Listen,
00:38:25I need two, three,
00:38:26four punches, okay?
00:38:27Pick the pace
00:38:28up on this guy, man.
00:38:29Hey, can't nobody
00:38:29keep their pace.
00:38:30All right, coach.
00:38:31All right, baby?
00:38:31All right.
00:38:33Here you go,
00:38:33some water.
00:38:38All right,
00:38:39you need to
00:38:39be confident.
00:38:40Don't be overconfident.
00:38:42That jab,
00:38:42keep your hands up
00:38:43and use that jab.
00:38:44You're doing well.
00:38:45Let's go.
00:38:46Come on.
00:38:48Punch stat numbers
00:38:49through six rounds.
00:38:50Barrera landing
00:38:51126 out of 273,
00:38:5346%.
00:38:53Jones has thrown
00:38:55200 more punches,
00:38:57476,
00:38:57but he's landed fewer,
00:38:59107,
00:39:00and his connect percentage
00:39:01is exactly half
00:39:02of Barrera's
00:39:03at 23%.
00:39:04In the sixth round,
00:39:06Barrera landed
00:39:06twice as many punches.
00:39:08Now, Junior comes out
00:39:09much more aggressively
00:39:10in round seven.
00:39:12Come on.
00:39:13Come on.
00:39:15Come on.
00:39:15Come on.
00:39:16Come on.
00:39:16Come on.
00:39:16Come on.
00:39:19A very, very
00:39:20intelligent fight
00:39:21by Barrera.
00:39:25The intelligence
00:39:25is trying to punch
00:39:26the intelligence
00:39:27out of him.
00:39:28Time.
00:39:28That was a bad
00:39:29low blow by Barrera.
00:39:30No, no, no.
00:39:32Hey,
00:39:33you want time or not?
00:39:34You want time?
00:39:36Okay, give me time.
00:39:37Five minutes.
00:39:39You can have any,
00:39:40you can have any amount
00:39:41of five.
00:39:42You tell me when you're ready.
00:39:42You can't have more than five.
00:39:43Let's go.
00:39:44You ready?
00:39:44Yes.
00:39:44Okay, he's in.
00:39:45Let's go.
00:39:45Haven't seen Mills Lane
00:39:47take a point.
00:39:47Harold, did you see him
00:39:48take a point?
00:39:49No, Jim.
00:39:49That was the second time
00:39:50he won Marco Antonio
00:39:51Barrera for low blows.
00:39:52I guess one more
00:39:53and he will.
00:39:54But remember,
00:39:54Mills was mad about
00:39:55Junior Jones throwing
00:39:56rabbit punches.
00:39:57It's sort of evening out.
00:39:58Well, now it's Jones
00:39:59trying to make a war
00:40:00out of it that
00:40:01we always expect
00:40:02Barrera to try.
00:40:03There's another,
00:40:04there's a perfect example
00:40:05of the rabbit punch.
00:40:06Yep.
00:40:08Junior wants to try
00:40:09to get this thing
00:40:10over with.
00:40:12I think he's trying
00:40:13to get Barrera
00:40:14out of this
00:40:16style that he has
00:40:17adopted.
00:40:17He wants him to
00:40:18get into some exchanges.
00:40:20Yeah, so he can
00:40:20hit him more.
00:40:21He doesn't feel
00:40:22like he can hit him
00:40:22clean enough
00:40:23with Barrera being
00:40:24economical
00:40:24and laying back.
00:40:31Junior Jones
00:40:32occasionally looking
00:40:33over here
00:40:33at Roy Jones Jr.
00:40:35as though to get
00:40:35advice or encouragement.
00:40:38And Barrera lands
00:40:39a right hand
00:40:39across the top
00:40:40and increasingly
00:40:42the calm of Barrera,
00:40:44his self-possession
00:40:45in there,
00:40:45a factor in the fight.
00:40:46Yes, it is.
00:40:47I think he's so calm
00:40:48because of his
00:40:49condition for this fight
00:40:50and his mental state.
00:40:59You're kind of an
00:41:00advisor to a lot
00:41:01of those 1988
00:41:02amateur guys,
00:41:03right, Roy?
00:41:03Yeah, pretty much so.
00:41:09Well, what would you
00:41:10tell Junior to do now?
00:41:11At this point in time,
00:41:12I would tell him
00:41:13to beat the body
00:41:14and quit looking
00:41:14for the big
00:41:15knockout punches.
00:41:16We'd have to be
00:41:16competing here
00:41:17to win a decision.
00:41:18If a knockout comes,
00:41:19let it come.
00:41:20Don't go out here
00:41:21and try to rush it
00:41:21because you're going
00:41:22to run into a big punch
00:41:23if you're not careful.
00:41:25So he needs to go
00:41:26body-to-body
00:41:27against the excellent
00:41:28body puncher
00:41:29Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:41:31Barrera much more
00:41:32economical with his
00:41:33attack so far.
00:41:35Junior Jones
00:41:35having to work harder
00:41:36but he landed
00:41:36that right hand.
00:41:37Yeah, but that punch
00:41:38would hurt worse
00:41:39had he landed
00:41:39a few body shots
00:41:40along the way
00:41:41to weaken Barrera some.
00:41:49Now I think Junior
00:41:50is basically
00:41:50getting impatient
00:41:51because he wants
00:41:52a knockout so bad
00:41:53that he can taste it
00:41:54and he can't hit
00:41:55Barrera as much
00:41:56as he wants to
00:41:57and it's driving him
00:41:58crazy.
00:41:58Yes, but I think
00:41:59he's trying to open
00:42:01Barrera up
00:42:02and in so doing
00:42:03probably has won
00:42:04this round.
00:42:05He's trying to get
00:42:07Barrera out of that
00:42:08shell.
00:42:11A lot of activity
00:42:12from Jones
00:42:12in round seven.
00:42:14Barrera stays
00:42:15in his envelope.
00:42:25next time he goes down
00:42:26there it's going to cost
00:42:27him one.
00:42:27Next time he goes down.
00:42:28Harold Letterman
00:42:29through seven.
00:42:30Watch him.
00:42:31I've got it.
00:42:31Five rounds to two.
00:42:3368-65 Marco Antonio
00:42:35Barrera.
00:42:36I think honestly
00:42:37he's taking Junior
00:42:38Jones out of his
00:42:38game plan.
00:42:39In other words
00:42:39he's backing Jones up.
00:42:40He's taking away his jab.
00:42:42He's catching the jab
00:42:43and doing more damage
00:42:44with those body shots.
00:42:45He's got Jones
00:42:45breathing hard
00:42:46through the mouth.
00:42:46It seems that the
00:42:47blood in those
00:42:48is bothering Jones.
00:42:49I think that Marco
00:42:50is just hitting him
00:42:51harder, doing more
00:42:52damage and controlling
00:42:53this fight.
00:42:54I have it four rounds
00:42:55to three.
00:42:58We'll take a look
00:42:59at the low blow
00:43:00and you may have heard
00:43:01Mills Lane
00:43:03told the judges
00:43:04that one more low blow
00:43:07from Barrera
00:43:08and he would take a point
00:43:09right away from him.
00:43:11Yes, but he also
00:43:12seemed to be telling
00:43:12Jones at the end
00:43:13of the round
00:43:14that more rabbit
00:43:14punching could bring
00:43:15a point deduction
00:43:16against him.
00:43:17Either that
00:43:17or hitting on the
00:43:18break.
00:43:24And in what we
00:43:25might see
00:43:26as a close fight
00:43:28a deduction
00:43:28for either fighter
00:43:29could be critical.
00:43:34Well, excellent
00:43:35body shot
00:43:36by Marco Antonio
00:43:37Barrera
00:43:38after a right hand
00:43:39by Junior Jones.
00:43:47Now Junior's going
00:43:48to the body
00:43:48like he should have
00:43:49been doing earlier.
00:43:55Now hook to the body
00:43:56by Jones.
00:43:57And then another
00:43:58up to the head.
00:44:00If you're going to
00:44:01hold your hands high,
00:44:02I'm going to hit you
00:44:03underneath them.
00:44:05And if you're going to
00:44:06give me the left hook,
00:44:07I'm going to double up on it.
00:44:08There you go.
00:44:11You guys are getting
00:44:12pretty smart here on this.
00:44:13Thanks, too, for good measure.
00:44:14We work with you, Roy.
00:44:15We're in school.
00:44:15We've got a continuing
00:44:16education.
00:44:17We're in school with the
00:44:18professor.
00:44:20I'm glad to see that you
00:44:21are paying attention
00:44:22that y'all are learning
00:44:22this, though.
00:44:24Hey, you're going to be
00:44:25doing this for 40 years.
00:44:26Just think how much
00:44:26we'll learn.
00:44:28This is an excellent
00:44:29fight here.
00:44:29Both of these guys
00:44:30are fighting a very
00:44:31smart fight.
00:44:35See, they have the
00:44:36right hand landed
00:44:37because of the hook
00:44:38landed just a few
00:44:39seconds before that.
00:44:40That's what I was saying
00:44:41when I said, if he'd land
00:44:41the hook more, then the
00:44:43right would be able to
00:44:43sneak in, too.
00:44:44So, Junior sharpening
00:44:45the attack.
00:44:47Good body shot by Junior.
00:44:48He just can't get
00:44:48careless here.
00:44:51Jones beginning to
00:44:52become more patient,
00:44:53perhaps beginning to
00:44:54accept the notion that
00:44:55they're going to go the
00:44:56distance and that he'd
00:44:57better score some points.
00:44:58That body shot by
00:44:59Barrera hurt Junior Jones.
00:45:02But Junior keeps
00:45:03throwing.
00:45:09Jones throwing and
00:45:10missing has been a
00:45:11persistent theme of the
00:45:12night.
00:45:13Yeah, but if he stays
00:45:14the more busier,
00:45:15Delahoya proved last
00:45:16week that you can win
00:45:17rounds like that.
00:45:24Another left hook to
00:45:25the body by Barrera
00:45:26after a right-hand
00:45:27lead over the top.
00:45:30Oh, good body shot by
00:45:31Junior Jones and a good
00:45:32counter body shot by
00:45:33Barrera.
00:45:34Now these guys are
00:45:35fighting a smart fight.
00:45:37It's a boxing match as
00:45:39round eight comes to a
00:45:40close, not a slugfest like
00:45:43their five-round war in
00:45:44Tampa last fall.
00:45:46In case you weren't with
00:45:47us for the first half of
00:45:48the doubleheader, welterweight
00:45:50superstar Ike Quartey
00:45:52continued his unbeaten
00:45:54ways with a fifth-round
00:45:56knockout of Ralph Tiger Jones.
00:45:57It was a power-punching
00:45:59exhibition by Quartey.
00:46:03Now Junior is trying more
00:46:04stuff to hit Barrera, which
00:46:05is what he should have been
00:46:06doing earlier.
00:46:07He shot a right hand to the
00:46:08body followed by a left hook
00:46:09and another right hand to the
00:46:10head.
00:46:11These are good combinations.
00:46:12two-thirds of the way through.
00:46:15Hey, look, this motherfucker
00:46:17want to quit, man.
00:46:18Listen, but you got to give him
00:46:19reason to quit, Junior.
00:46:20Hey, look at me.
00:46:22You got to give him reason to
00:46:23quit.
00:46:23Hey, look, when I call for a
00:46:2530-second drill, can't nobody on
00:46:27this planet Earth there with no
00:46:2830-second drill.
00:46:29You got that in you?
00:46:31Get the water done.
00:46:31Do you got that in you?
00:46:33Okay, baby.
00:46:33All right, when I call for a 30-second
00:46:35drill, jump on his ass, okay?
00:46:40Keep throwing the jabs, and when
00:46:42he's not looking, hit him with
00:46:43the right hand.
00:46:44He's tired already.
00:46:45You got him, Marcus.
00:46:47Punch him in the nose.
00:46:50Make sure you throw that right
00:46:51hand right in there.
00:46:55Jones was more aggressive in
00:46:57that round, and you heard in his
00:47:00corner that they told him that
00:47:02they have a 30-second plan, which
00:47:04sounds like a two-minute drill in
00:47:06football, which sounds like they
00:47:08want to try to steal the rounds
00:47:09with 30 seconds of action and
00:47:12flurries at the end of the
00:47:14rounds.
00:47:16Fascinating punch stat numbers in
00:47:18round eight.
00:47:19Jones landing 32 of 84.
00:47:21Maybe his best round of the fight
00:47:23with a 38-percent connect
00:47:24percentage.
00:47:25Barrera only threw 41 punches,
00:47:26but he landed 26, a 63-percent
00:47:30connect percentage.
00:47:31Harold Letterman gave the round to
00:47:32Jones.
00:47:37Now, Jr. is throwing good body
00:47:38shots again.
00:47:39I don't know if Marco is getting
00:47:40tired or what it is, but he seems
00:47:42to be slowing just a little.
00:47:44Yep.
00:47:44His offense is definitely slowing
00:47:46down, and that could be because
00:47:47Jr. is stepping up the
00:47:49aggression.
00:47:49Yeah, and it could be that he's
00:47:50playing possible.
00:47:52Come on.
00:47:52Let's go.
00:47:53Come on.
00:47:53Get that question.
00:47:53Watch your hand.
00:47:59That's one good thing about him
00:48:00never showing any expression,
00:48:01though.
00:48:02His expression is still the same as
00:48:03it wasn't round one.
00:48:04He's like the Sphinx.
00:48:06The opponent can't tell whether
00:48:07he's tired or whether he's just
00:48:08taking time off, or if he's
00:48:10playing possible.
00:48:11And after a while, that can
00:48:12creep into your head, too.
00:48:15Stand back.
00:48:16Stand back.
00:48:17All right, boy.
00:48:17They call Barrera the baby-faced
00:48:19assassin.
00:48:20He's one of a couple of fighters
00:48:21who carries that nickname.
00:48:26Yeah, because I could have
00:48:27carried that nickname.
00:48:27All right, let him go.
00:48:28Let him go, Barrera.
00:48:29Come on.
00:48:29Let him go.
00:48:30Come on.
00:48:30Don't you have enough?
00:48:35I was thinking of Johnny Tapia.
00:48:44Taking a point away from him
00:48:46right here.
00:48:47Crossing a point.
00:48:48Crossing a point.
00:48:50Crossing a point.
00:48:51A point deducted from Barrera.
00:48:53Come on.
00:48:55Or was it from Jones?
00:48:56No, it was from Barrera.
00:48:58From Barrera.
00:48:58All right.
00:48:59That's why Mills pointed at Jones
00:49:00to bring it back.
00:49:01That's the third time.
00:49:03And I don't know if the fight
00:49:04was close before this, but if
00:49:06Jones wins this round, the 10-8
00:49:07round, it will be close after
00:49:09this.
00:49:12Let's see how Barrera responds
00:49:14now that a point has been
00:49:15deducted for low blows in the
00:49:16ninth round of a Schedule 12.
00:49:19Hard right hand by Junior Jones.
00:49:21I have to tell you, Junior really
00:49:22wants to win this fight.
00:49:24I've never seen him try to push
00:49:25the issue so hard to win a fight.
00:49:27He really wants to win this fight.
00:49:29And Barrera, because of that
00:49:31eagerness, seems passive at the
00:49:33moment.
00:49:39Barrera landing a left and a right.
00:49:41Left back to the body by Barrera.
00:49:43And Jones is mouthing at him right
00:49:45now.
00:49:46He says, go ahead, throw it, throw it.
00:49:47He asks him, he says, is that all
00:49:48you got?
00:49:49Go, go.
00:49:50Work out, work out.
00:49:51Work out.
00:49:51Come on.
00:49:52All right, one step back.
00:49:54It's also surprising to me that
00:49:56Barrera will hold on the inside.
00:49:57I will feel as though he will be
00:49:58the stronger of the two insides.
00:50:01Another right hand shot landed
00:50:02for Junior Jones.
00:50:04Still shortening the distance
00:50:06between himself and Barrera.
00:50:07Making the jab more of a factor.
00:50:09Landing the right hand over the top.
00:50:11Turning the fight around in the
00:50:13second half of the fight after
00:50:15seeming to be out game planned
00:50:17in the first six rounds.
00:50:20Now he's boxing the fourth
00:50:22fight team.
00:50:23And Jones, and now Jones has been
00:50:25in control of the fight for the
00:50:26last few rounds.
00:50:29How do you feel?
00:50:29How do you feel?
00:50:30Okay.
00:50:31Look, now we need to pick it up
00:50:32another level on him, man.
00:50:33This guy wants to quit, man.
00:50:35You see how you're going to slow
00:50:36down?
00:50:36And listen, that step right,
00:50:38fire right is working.
00:50:40But you got to throw it through.
00:50:41Okay?
00:50:42Sure.
00:50:44Marcos, we need to make this a
00:50:46little better.
00:50:47We're winning, but it's close.
00:50:48You lost a point.
00:50:49We don't want to lose this fight.
00:50:52Marcos, let's use some speed
00:50:55and aggressiveness.
00:50:56You got to land more blows.
00:51:01You got to keep going forward,
00:51:03but be careful.
00:51:04Use that intelligence that you
00:51:06have, Marcos.
00:51:08Take a look at the low blow
00:51:10that cost Barrera a point.
00:51:14Seems to me that that was right
00:51:15on the margins, but after having
00:51:19thrown two low blows before,
00:51:20it cost him.
00:51:22And you saw Jones helping Mills
00:51:24Lane a little bit by putting his
00:51:26glove down to indicate that it
00:51:27had landed low.
00:51:28That was a good right hand by
00:51:29Junior Jones off the hook.
00:51:31I was about to ask, Roy,
00:51:32do you think that the passiveness
00:51:35of Barrera, relative to what the
00:51:37style we've seen of him in the past,
00:51:39is due because he's too conscious
00:51:41of getting hit by that right hand?
00:51:42It could be.
00:51:43And now Junior's landed a left hook,
00:51:45which was opening up the right hand,
00:51:46like I said earlier.
00:51:48I think his passiveness may be
00:51:49giving Junior a little too much
00:51:51confidence.
00:51:52Seesaw battle in Vegas.
00:51:53Junior Jones coming on strong
00:51:54in the second half of the bout
00:51:56against Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:51:58Another Jones combination
00:51:59crashing to the head of Barrera.
00:52:01And all these right hands are
00:52:03because of that left hook
00:52:04that has started to land.
00:52:05Boy, he has sure shown the ability
00:52:06to double up on the left hook.
00:52:08Now he dangles the right hand
00:52:09in front of Barrera and comes
00:52:10back with more left.
00:52:29Junior is pushing the issue here.
00:52:31He's making the fight happen.
00:52:32And I think the judges will credit
00:52:33him all these rounds that he's
00:52:34pushing the issue like this in.
00:52:37That was a good body shot.
00:52:38Another good body shot by Junior.
00:52:39And a good left hook.
00:52:41Oh, he has turned the fight around
00:52:43with excellent use of the left hand.
00:52:46Stepping in closer to make the jab
00:52:47a factor.
00:52:48Doubling up on the hook.
00:52:49Using the left hand of the body.
00:52:51Being more aggressive than Barrera
00:52:53in the late rounds.
00:52:55He just has to make sure he doesn't
00:52:56underestimate Barrera
00:52:57because Barrera is still very strong.
00:53:05This fight is going to be very close
00:53:06on the scorecards going into the last
00:53:09two rounds.
00:53:09We have to expect.
00:53:13Of course, you might have said
00:53:14that last weekend.
00:53:18You never can tell.
00:53:19Oh, good right hand by Junior.
00:53:22That's it, right hand by Junior.
00:53:25And this is a classic case.
00:53:28Once he stopped thinking knockout
00:53:30and started the score,
00:53:31he gave himself a much better chance
00:53:33of knocking Barrera out.
00:53:35Which is what I told you
00:53:36when you asked me
00:53:36what would my instructions be.
00:53:38That was a good body shot
00:53:39by Barrera.
00:53:42Barrera lands a right uppercut inside.
00:53:44And Junior lands a left hook inside.
00:53:47Oh, good exchange by the fighters.
00:53:59Get him up, Jones.
00:54:00Come on.
00:54:02Oh, whoa.
00:54:04What a classic right hand.
00:54:05Sensational right hand
00:54:06across the top by Jones.
00:54:07And Barrera goes into a shell
00:54:09against the ropes.
00:54:10Junior Jones has got him hurt.
00:54:11Now Barrera comes back
00:54:12with body shots.
00:54:13But Barrera is still strong.
00:54:35Marcos, the fight is even now.
00:54:36He's caught up with us.
00:54:39We need to win the last two rounds.
00:54:43You're doing all right,
00:54:43but you need a little more speed.
00:54:45First, get ready.
00:54:53The big right hand.
00:54:56Barrera took the punch well.
00:54:58Don't want to take too many of those.
00:55:04And then wailing away on the ropes
00:55:06at the close of the round.
00:55:09Ever since his comeback fight against Canizales,
00:55:14Junior Jones has been one hell of a fighter.
00:55:18And in a sensational round 10 for him,
00:55:21Junior Jones landed 51 of 104 thrown punches,
00:55:25according to CompuBox statistics.
00:55:27So we go to round 11.
00:55:29Does Barrera have to throw his game plan out now?
00:55:32Well, I don't know because this is still a very close tactical fight.
00:55:36If he throws his game plan out, he may get knocked out.
00:55:39So I can't say he should throw his game plan out.
00:55:41Barrera working to the body.
00:55:43Jones working upstairs.
00:55:44Crowd loves it.
00:55:46This fight still could easily end in a knockout by either fighter.
00:55:55Barrera here throwing some very smart body shots here, though.
00:55:58Yeah, but it's the end of the fight.
00:56:00He's got to do more damage.
00:56:03Good body shot by Barrera there.
00:56:05Well, he had some body shot.
00:56:07Jones backing away a little bit.
00:56:09Now Jones creates more distance.
00:56:11His leg's slightly wobbly.
00:56:13I'm not sure Barrera knows how much he hurt Junior with that one body shot.
00:56:17Oh, that's a good right hand by Barrera.
00:56:23One thing Barrera knows is that it took a lot of opportunity that last round
00:56:26to expend all the punches that he throws.
00:56:29And now he's doubling up that advantage with the body shots
00:56:32as suddenly the bout seems to swing back in Barrera's favor for the moment.
00:56:49Now Jr. is relying on the right hand again.
00:56:51He needs to go back to using the hook and the body shots more.
00:56:54And you saw Jr. pounding to the body with the right hand there.
00:57:00Barrera back into his passive mode a little bit.
00:57:03Takes a right hand across the top from Jr. Jones.
00:57:06Barrera still looking for opportunities to get to the body
00:57:08as he did so well in the first minute of this round.
00:57:11That's what Jr. needs to do right there.
00:57:13Keep it real on the end and just outboxing for these last two rounds
00:57:16and win the fight.
00:57:18Oh, that was a very dangerous shot.
00:57:20Uppercut by Barrera.
00:57:21Could have done more damage if it were one inch longer.
00:57:26Or one inch more to the right.
00:57:31Good right hand by Jr., but it's always counted
00:57:34by a good enough body shot by Barrera.
00:57:36Yep.
00:57:37Straight right hand by Jr. Jones.
00:57:39Barrera steps in to answer with a right hand of his own.
00:57:42And Jr. is showing a remarkable chin here himself, Jim.
00:57:47Both guys have taken a lot of solid shots.
00:57:50Been a heck of a boxing match for two superb,
00:57:54well-conditioned boxing athletes.
00:57:58This is more like the fight we were hoping for last week.
00:58:04Well, there are no southpaws in there tonight.
00:58:21Another tough round to score.
00:58:23And this lane goes down.
00:58:25They will go to the 12th.
00:58:26All right, baby.
00:58:27You got one more round.
00:58:29One more round.
00:58:30All right, look.
00:58:31I don't want you in no firefight.
00:58:33You're in it.
00:58:37I don't want you in no firefight.
00:58:39I don't want you in no firefight.
00:58:40I don't want you in no way down.
00:58:45Marcus, press the issue.
00:58:47He doesn't know what you do.
00:58:49Don't go back.
00:58:50Keep coming forward.
00:58:51Make that left hand and then the right.
00:58:53Let's go for it.
00:58:55Look, I don't want you in no firefight.
00:58:56Look, listen, three and four jabs.
00:58:59Three and four jabs and a right hand right behind it, okay?
00:59:04Hey, this is the fight.
00:59:05This is your talent.
00:59:10We got to get this last round, Marcos.
00:59:15The bull that became the bullfighter has become the bull again.
00:59:20Round 12 begins.
00:59:22Harold Lederman, how do you have it going into the last three minutes?
00:59:24Jim, six rounds to five, 105-103, Junior Jones.
00:59:30I think he's absolutely fighting his heart out the last four rounds.
00:59:33He's just outfighting Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:59:36And that one point that Mills took away in round nine for the low blow
00:59:39is really hurting Barrera in the scoring.
00:59:41I think Junior is absolutely pulling this fight out
00:59:44with a great effort in the last four rounds.
00:59:46On your card, that one-point deduction means Barrera
00:59:49would now need a knockout to win the fight.
00:59:51Yes, absolutely correct, Jim.
00:59:53And I agree with you, Harold.
00:59:54And oddly enough, I have the same score.
00:59:57That is odd.
00:59:59Two minutes, 20 seconds to go in what has been an excellent boxing match.
01:00:04Shifting tides of fortune.
01:00:06Junior can't get careless here.
01:00:07He has to stay strong because Marco is going to stay strong.
01:00:10Marco is doing excellent body shots.
01:00:12Come on, let's go.
01:00:12And he has to keep focused on what he's doing, Junior Jones.
01:00:15And you heard Tommy Brooks say,
01:00:16Three jabs and the right hand.
01:00:18Three jabs and the right hand.
01:00:20Easier to say it than to do it.
01:00:28Junior's going to lose a point if he keeps on throwing his shoulder.
01:00:50Good body shot by Barrera as he countered Jones.
01:00:54Another one that was slightly low.
01:00:57No more penalties forthcoming from Lane at this point.
01:01:02Barrera determined to get in close.
01:01:05Jones determined to work to the body with the right hand.
01:01:11Sticking the jab and moving, just as he should.
01:01:14Very smart by Junior Jones.
01:01:23Barrera never stops working that ribcage.
01:01:26I can't say he is hurting Junior badly to the body here.
01:01:30Marco has been the more accurate punter.
01:01:33Junior has been by far the more prolific punter.
01:01:37What will the judges go for tonight?
01:01:45Junior is really showing the heart of a champion here tonight.
01:01:49And so is Marco Antonio Barrera.
01:01:52Just have a sense that Junior wants it more.
01:01:56That's what it seems to me.
01:02:01Step back.
01:02:02We're both of us.
01:02:03We're coming to the ring.
01:02:11Two of the three judges at ringside
01:02:14were among the three
01:02:16who so powerfully favored Oscar De La Hoya's aggression
01:02:20against Brunel Whitaker's defense and skill
01:02:24last Saturday night.
01:02:25What will they go for tonight?
01:02:28I don't care what they go for.
01:02:30Junior Jones won the fight.
01:02:33What a battle.
01:02:35And Barrera is truly a great champion.
01:02:37Yep.
01:02:38What a professional effort by both fighters.
01:02:45Harold, how'd you finish up?
01:02:47Well, I'll tell you.
01:02:49I agree with Roy Jones, Jr.
01:02:50This was a great fight, but Junior Jones won it.
01:02:531-14, 1-13.
01:02:56In round six, rounds apiece, Junior Jones.
01:02:58He just fought his heart out in rounds eight, nine, ten, eleven.
01:03:02I thought he won them all.
01:03:03Barrera may have edged him in a thrift with the body shots,
01:03:06but Junior still wins it
01:03:07because at a one point,
01:03:09that referee Mills Lane took away
01:03:11in round nine from Marco Antonio Barrera
01:03:13due to the low blows.
01:03:15I think Junior has got enough rounds.
01:03:17I mean, all he needs is six rounds to win this fight.
01:03:19These are all ten, nine rounds, Jim.
01:03:21And Junior's got an extra point,
01:03:23so I think Junior Jones wins the fight by one point.
01:03:26It's a ten-point must system.
01:03:28And we talked about professionalism, Roy.
01:03:30These pictures show you
01:03:31how much the two fighters respect each other at this point.
01:03:33And that's what you like to see in a sport like boxing.
01:03:36Boxing has such a bad name.
01:03:37Until you like to see guys that respect one another,
01:03:40you like to see guys go out and show good sportsmanship
01:03:42after the fight.
01:03:43Giving each other their proppers.
01:03:45Let's go to Michael Buffer and find out who won.
01:03:49Ladies and gentlemen,
01:03:50here at the Las Vegas Hilton,
01:03:51we go to the Budweiser scorecards.
01:03:55Dwayne Ford scores the belt,
01:03:57116 to 111.
01:03:59Jerry Roth scores it,
01:04:00114 to 113.
01:04:03And Chuck Jampa has it,
01:04:05114 to 112
01:04:07for the winner by unanimous decision.
01:04:10And still!
01:04:13The second of the world
01:04:15from Brooklyn, New York,
01:04:18Poison Junior Jones!
01:04:24Well, you heard Poison say before the fight
01:04:27that he would beat Marco Antonio Barrera every time.
01:04:30And I'll tell you,
01:04:31I'm not sure Barrera could fight him better than that.
01:04:33Well, I'm sure Barrera could fight him better than that.
01:04:36He won that fight this time.
01:04:37Strictly on heart,
01:04:38the end of smart boxing Junior Jones did.
01:04:41Barrera should have showed more heart when he saw himself behind
01:04:45and should have picked up the pace a little bit.
01:04:48It's not easy to pick up the pace against a guy who's hitting you in the mouth,
01:04:51and that's what Jones did down the stretch.
01:04:54Total punches in the fight.
01:04:55Junior landing 36 more,
01:04:59throwing 449 more punches than Marco Antonio Barrera.
01:05:03That's an average of nearly 40 more punches thrown per round.
01:05:07Barrera landing 50% of his blows,
01:05:09but just not busy enough in the critical rounds 7 through 10
01:05:14when Junior took command of the fight.
01:05:17Total jabs,
01:05:18and there's where the vast disparity in punches thrown began,
01:05:22but Junior threw more power shots also.
01:05:24Landing only 99 out of 555 jabs,
01:05:27but it did the job.
01:05:29Let's go up to Larry Merchant with the winner.
01:05:32Thank you, Jim.
01:05:34Congratulations once again, Junior.
01:05:36Why was this fight so different from the first one?
01:05:39I mean, we both came in, I mean,
01:05:41at the tip touché.
01:05:42We tried, we both tried to pose our will.
01:05:44That's where the class came.
01:05:45He went to pose his will,
01:05:46I went to pose my will,
01:05:47and nobody wants to give up.
01:05:49All right.
01:05:49What seemed to change the fight was that he was very conscious of your right hand,
01:05:54and he was throwing more jabs earlier,
01:05:56and was not engaging you in as many exchanges.
01:06:01What problems did that cause you for a while?
01:06:03Well, I mean,
01:06:05we worked on everything in the gym.
01:06:07There was nothing that really surprised me.
01:06:09I mean, I was in there with one of the best fighters in the world,
01:06:11and this is just a championship fight right here.
01:06:14Nothing comes easy.
01:06:15You seem especially pleased with this fight
01:06:18because it demanded more of you in a way than the first fight.
01:06:21Well, I was very pleased because, I mean,
01:06:23I got tired of the bullshit of people saying Junior Jones don't have no condition,
01:06:26he can't take it,
01:06:27and everybody was thinking about it when I was bent away,
01:06:29and they forget that.
01:06:30I mean, we work hard.
01:06:31We train for 12 rounds.
01:06:32We don't train to knock nobody out,
01:06:33and this fight was especially,
01:06:35but especially because the first one,
01:06:37too much controversy,
01:06:38this time, I mean,
01:06:39no one can say nothing.
01:06:41Congratulations again, Junior.
01:06:43I'd say,
01:06:43go to my kids,
01:06:44Chantel,
01:06:45Jamel,
01:06:45my niece and nephew.
01:06:46I love y'all.
01:06:47Coming home.
01:06:48And I'm sure they love you, Junior.
01:06:50Jim and Roy.
01:06:51All right,
01:06:52and we should note here that Marco Antonio Barrera
01:06:54has already gone to his dressing room,
01:06:56obviously disappointed with the decision.
01:06:58We're going to send Larry there now
01:06:59to see if we can get a word with Barrera.
01:07:02In the meantime,
01:07:03let's talk about something that we
01:07:04maybe don't pay as much attention to on the telecast as we should, Roy,
01:07:07and that's the work of the corner.
01:07:09Some credit to Tommy Brooks and Lou Duva
01:07:11for the way they carried their man down the stretch tonight.
01:07:13They really outhandled their fighter tonight.
01:07:16They did a remarkable job on Junior Jones.
01:07:18They kept him poised.
01:07:20They kept him in the fight.
01:07:21They always kept him aware of what was going on.
01:07:23They did a terrific job training him,
01:07:25getting him right for the fight.
01:07:26I give them 100% credit for this win as a unit.
01:07:31The whole team was excellent tonight.
01:07:33You saw the professional work of Junior Jones
01:07:36in a weight division which is crowded with talent.
01:07:39You can look up the road at 126 pounds
01:07:42where the real money is fighting Prince Nassim
01:07:45over in London, England,
01:07:46and Junior would love to do that.
01:07:48Maybe Daniel Zaragoza at 122 pounds.
01:07:51Maybe Wayne McCullough.
01:07:52Maybe another fight with Kennedy McKinney.
01:07:54Who knows what could happen in Junior's future,
01:07:56but there are a lot of choices for him.
01:07:57A great deal of choices.
01:07:59Only one consider and just wish they had so many choices
01:08:01to make the money with.
01:08:03All right.
01:08:03Well, we'll see what choice Junior makes
01:08:05and take a look at the three judges' scorecards.
01:08:09Once again, Nevada judges choosing Junior Jones
01:08:13by 114-112, 114-113,
01:08:15which was identical to the card of our Harold Letterman
01:08:18and Dwayne Ford with a 116-111,
01:08:21a number that harkens back to last week's Oscar De La Hoya decision
01:08:25against Purnell Whitaker.
01:08:27Hard fight to score,
01:08:28but it wasn't too hard to see Junior's desire
01:08:30and his motivation down the stretch.
01:08:32And that's where I think fights are worn at.
01:08:34I think one guy should go in and dominate the other guy
01:08:37to show right here, from right here,
01:08:39that he is the champion.
01:08:40I don't think fights should be decided
01:08:41by a guy just going the distance with champions
01:08:43or just lasting with a guy who he's supposed to be able to beat.
01:08:48And like last week, you don't have any decisiveness.
01:08:51Neither guy was really hungry.
01:08:53De La Hoya did come on to win the last round,
01:08:55but it's still so arguative about who could have won,
01:08:58who was in charge.
01:08:59You don't know this.
01:09:00So there you don't have a clear winner.
01:09:02You know, when you make a guy go down on one knee and wilt,
01:09:04you've got a clear winner.
01:09:05That's something different.
01:09:06That's why I can't understand the sport of boxing,
01:09:08how we get so much controversy.
01:09:09But there you see it.
01:09:1110.30 Eastern Time tomorrow night, incidentally.
01:09:13Just to remind you,
01:09:13that's your chance to see the delayed broadcast
01:09:15of De La Hoya and Whitaker here on HBO
01:09:18as we wait to find out whether Larry Merchant
01:09:20can get a word with the man
01:09:22who lost this unanimous decision, Marco Antonio Barrera.
01:09:25What's happening with you
01:09:27and the chance for a rematch against Montel Griffin
01:09:29after that disqualification for hitting Griffin twice
01:09:32while he was down?
01:09:32Well, the WBC already demanded a rematch,
01:09:36so I'm sure we'll have a rematch in August.
01:09:38And things like this, you know,
01:09:40it's just, it takes a lot out of a fighter.
01:09:42It takes a lot out of me
01:09:43because you know I'm a guy who in previous fights
01:09:45have even backed back and asked the referee to stop it.
01:09:47I was no madder at Montel Griffin
01:09:49than I was at Benny Pazienza.
01:09:51I asked the ref to stop the Pazienza fight
01:09:53because I know Pazienza was through.
01:09:54I didn't want to hit Montel anymore,
01:09:56but when I tapped him,
01:09:57I'm giving the referee a chance to move me back
01:09:59because I don't know what you're calling.
01:10:01If I turn and walk away,
01:10:02he hits me with a punch from the floor
01:10:03and the ref said,
01:10:04well, I didn't know he was down
01:10:05and I told you to protect yourself at all times.
01:10:07Then I'm knocked out and I lose.
01:10:09So I can't, I mean,
01:10:10I can't just put myself out there like that.
01:10:12I wouldn't dare try to hurt a guy.
01:10:14I didn't hit him with a hard shot while he was down,
01:10:15which is why I know he was faking the shot,
01:10:18faking like he was knocked out
01:10:19because I didn't hit him hard.
01:10:19I could have tore his head off.
01:10:21Incidentally, Montel,
01:10:22if you're watching out there,
01:10:23when the rematch arrives,
01:10:24we'll do our best to give you equal time.
01:10:27Roy, Larry Merchant has rejoined us
01:10:29from his apparently fruitless effort
01:10:31to get an interview with Marco Antonio Barrera.
01:10:33I think he's one disappointed puppy.
01:10:37I think he thought that the first fight was a mistake.
01:10:41He is an outstanding fighter.
01:10:43He's just met a terrific fighter
01:10:46a little bit better than him in these two fights.
01:10:49This is a game I'm thinking about
01:10:52how dramatic the ups and the downs are in this game.
01:10:55And we have seen very often across the years
01:10:58that an undefeated fighter,
01:11:00when he's beaten,
01:11:01never can quite get back to where he was.
01:11:05That discouragement takes away from him
01:11:07the feeling of invincibility
01:11:09and it starts to creep in to his fighting.
01:11:12And this is an introduction to saying,
01:11:15how wonderful what Junior Jones has done for himself.
01:11:19He was on top.
01:11:21He was thought to be an outstanding talent.
01:11:23He suffered a devastating loss
01:11:25and then another one.
01:11:27And gradually he's worked his way back.
01:11:29He surrounded himself with very good people
01:11:32after his trainer, Joe Ferriello, died.
01:11:35This is a singular triumph
01:11:37for a very, very good fighter
01:11:39and a very nice young man.
01:11:41And we can't wait to see more of him in action here on HBO
01:11:44because, indeed, Junior Jones has done a very difficult thing
01:11:47and revived his career.
01:11:49After he reached the bottom,
01:11:51he's come back to the top.
01:11:52We'll have a final word on what happened here
01:11:54in the boxing ring tonight.
01:11:55Now let's look ahead to some upcoming programming

01:12:36the most devastating puncher around.
01:12:40Get a little older.
01:12:41Train a little harder.
01:12:44So when it's time for big George Foreman

01:13:36Here at the Las Vegas Hilton tonight,
01:13:38Ike Corté staked his claim
01:13:40as the best welterweight in the world.
01:13:42Better than either Delahoy or Whitaker,
01:13:44that's what he would tell you.
01:13:45He got a fifth-round knockout
01:13:47over an overmatched Ralph Tiger Jones.
01:13:50It was a power-punching exhibition for Quartey,
01:13:53who landed more than 260 such blows
01:13:55in less than five rounds.
01:13:57And then Junior Jones retained
01:13:58his 122-pound world championship
01:14:00with a second victory over Marco Antonio Barrera.
01:14:04This won a unanimous decision
01:14:05in which Jones had to come from behind
01:14:07with overwhelming desire down the stretch,
01:14:11out-fought Barrera to clearly win the decision.
