00:00:00Exhilarating, hard-hitting, unbeatable.
00:00:04HBO Sports.
00:00:10And now, the HBO Sports presentation, HBO Boxing After Dark.
00:00:41HBO Boxing After Dark.
00:01:22HBO Boxing After Dark is back from Lincoln City, Oregon.
00:01:26Tonight, you'll see young Fernando Vargas, 154-pound world champion,
00:01:31taking on mandatory challenger Ronald Winky Wright.
00:01:34And 130-pound champion Diego Corrales,
00:01:37recent conqueror of Roberto Garcia to win that title,
00:01:39faces bad, bad John Brown.
00:01:43Call this show, if you will,
00:01:45want to buy land, do it by sea.
00:01:47This area of the Pacific Northwest,
00:01:49recently hit with torrential rains and heavy flooding,
00:01:53causing hazardous conditions.
00:01:54But the arena here at Chinook Winds Casino is warm and cozy.
00:01:59The fighters are ready for war.
00:02:00And we're in for a high and dry doubleheader
00:02:03on Boxing After Dark.
00:02:06Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
00:02:08We welcome you to this special edition of HBO's Boxing After Dark.
00:02:11Special, because later tonight,
00:02:13you'll see one of the real rising superstars of the sport of boxing,
00:02:1621-year-old Fernando Vargas,
00:02:18whose record of 17 knockouts and 17 fights
00:02:21is for the moment the highest knockout percentage
00:02:24of any champion in the sport.
00:02:26Vargas will be facing a ticklish mandatory title defense
00:02:30against cute boxer Ronald Winky Wright,
00:02:33even as he also faces some major problems outside the ring.
00:02:36More on that in just a moment.
00:02:38And before we see that fight,
00:02:40in a moment we'll have Diego Corrales
00:02:41defending the 130-pound title he won just six weeks ago
00:02:45against a formidable opponent in John Brown.
00:02:47Working with me as always,
00:02:48HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Murchett.
00:02:50And, Larry, as we get ready later on tonight
00:02:52in the main event to watch Fernando Vargas,
00:02:54when Vargas won the world championship at age 21,
00:02:59just turned 21 a year ago,
00:03:00a lot of people felt like maybe that would be,
00:03:03for him, too much too soon.
00:03:05Has it been?
00:03:06Well, he's shown that he's too much fighter.
00:03:09But outside the ring,
00:03:11that's a fire engine of a different color.
00:03:13Perhaps it was too soon.
00:03:15Vargas and his precocious Olympic teammates
00:03:18have all now started to support the lawyers.
00:03:22Vargas himself is still faced with a felony charge
00:03:27stemming from a brawl over a woman.
00:03:30David Reed is in a contract dispute
00:03:33that has put off indefinitely
00:03:35his proposed fight with Felix Trinidad.
00:03:38And Floyd Mayweather has no title fights,
00:03:42no fights scheduled for the foreseeable future
00:03:45because a rap star has told him
00:03:48that he's worth more money
00:03:49than anybody would realistically give him.
00:03:52Inside the ring,
00:03:53a young fighter with a title
00:03:55may have to face an opponent
00:03:57he's really not ready to face yet.
00:04:00Hello, Winky Wright.
00:04:03That'll be the main event later on this evening.
00:04:05Normally at this moment,
00:04:06I would turn to world light heavyweight champion
00:04:09and HBO Boxing After Dark expert Roy Jones,
00:04:11who, even though he has a title defense
00:04:13coming up on January 15,
00:04:14is trying to make it all the way
00:04:16from Pensacola, Florida,
00:04:17here to Lincoln City, Oregon tonight.
00:04:19But because of bad weather
00:04:20in this part of the country
00:04:21and the long travel schedule today,
00:04:23Roy isn't here yet.
00:04:25He might make it.
00:04:26But at this moment,
00:04:27I will turn to Larry
00:04:28and ask you the question
00:04:29I would normally have asked Roy.
00:04:30We get ready to see Diego Corrales,
00:04:32who won a title just six weeks ago,
00:04:34celebrated for a couple of weeks,
00:04:35then just four weeks ago
00:04:37got noticed that he had this fight
00:04:38coming up against John Brown.
00:04:39How easy for Corrales
00:04:41to get back in gear
00:04:43and get himself ready
00:04:44to be fully prepared
00:04:46for the title fight tonight?
00:04:48Well, my first thought, Jim,
00:04:49is that youth sometime
00:04:52is wasted on the young
00:04:53or a fool may soon be parted
00:04:56from his title.
00:04:57From all the reports we have,
00:04:59he's not in great shape.
00:05:00He came here on Wednesday
00:05:02at least five pounds overweight.
00:05:04Then there was a rumor
00:05:05that he had been seen
00:05:06eating a bowl of pasta.
00:05:07But I have it on exclusive authority
00:05:10that it really was a bowl
00:05:12of milky clam chowder.
00:05:16He's not in good shape.
00:05:18He says he's young enough
00:05:19to overcome that
00:05:21against a fighter
00:05:22of John Brown's stature
00:05:24or mini stature.
00:05:26We'll see.
00:05:27But he's giving John Brown
00:05:28his best chance.
00:05:29It's the Mutt and Jeff fight
00:05:31of the 130-pound division
00:05:32as you're about to see.
00:05:33Both fighters are already
00:05:34in the ring.
00:05:34So let's take a look
00:05:35at the title list.
00:05:36Diego Corrales.
00:05:37He won a mild upset
00:05:38from Roberto Garcia.
00:05:40This is a six-foot,
00:05:43130-pound fighter.
00:05:44And he has an interesting
00:05:45genesis in the sport.
00:05:47Unbeaten it.
00:05:48Yeah.
00:05:48His mom and dad
00:05:50were workers in
00:05:51the city government
00:05:52of Sacramento.
00:05:53He himself went off the track
00:05:55and became a serious
00:05:57gang member,
00:05:58then got back on the track
00:06:00in boxing
00:06:00and now says winning a title
00:06:02is a working man's dream.
00:06:05And across the ring
00:06:06from the lanky Corrales
00:06:08is the dependable John Brown.
00:06:10You've seen him twice before
00:06:11here on HBO.
00:06:13And at 5'3 out of Atlantic City,
00:06:15this is one of the toughest
00:06:16customers among great club
00:06:18fighters in the sport.
00:06:19In 10 years as a pro,
00:06:21he's only been stopped
00:06:22by Shane Mosley,
00:06:23and he's trying to build
00:06:25a business nest egg now,
00:06:26and he owns a barbershop
00:06:27and a bike rental shop
00:06:29in Atlantic City.
00:06:32Yesterday,
00:06:33in late afternoon,
00:06:35Brown easily weighed in
00:06:37under the 130-pound limit.
00:06:39And then Corrales
00:06:40took three hours
00:06:42to make weight
00:06:43for the fight,
00:06:44and that poses
00:06:46some difficulty for him,
00:06:47you suspect,
00:06:48as he gets ready
00:06:48for this fight.
00:06:49Tale of the tape
00:06:50for Diego Corrales
00:06:51against John Brown.
00:06:52You've already heard
00:06:53about the Mutt & Jeff dimensions.
00:06:55Corrales at 6 feet,
00:06:56Brown 5'3 1⁄2",
00:06:579-inch age advantage
00:06:58for the young titleist
00:06:59from Sacramento,
00:07:008-inch reach advantage.
00:07:01He finally made weight
00:07:03three hours late
00:07:03at 130,
00:07:04and has put on
00:07:0618 pounds
00:07:07since then,
00:07:0918 pounds,
00:07:10while Brown put on
00:07:1013 pounds himself.
00:07:12That's just about
00:07:1315% of his body weight
00:07:15and really tells you
00:07:16what he went through
00:07:18to make weight.

00:07:19with our unofficial
00:07:20ringside scorer,

00:11:05Touch gloves.
00:11:06Good luck to both of you.
00:11:08John Brown
00:11:09wants to get into
00:11:10a war of attrition.
00:11:12Calls himself
00:11:13a warrior.
00:11:15Corrales
00:11:15is in army gear.
00:11:18Says he's ready
00:11:19for a war.
00:11:21Does he have
00:11:22the conditioning
00:11:22and the energy
00:11:24for a long
00:11:25drawn out?
00:11:27Even Corrales
00:11:28acknowledged to us
00:11:30yesterday
00:11:30that would be
00:11:31one of the big
00:11:31questions in the fight.
00:11:33Could he,
00:11:33Corrales,
00:11:34just six weeks
00:11:35removed
00:11:36from having won
00:11:37the title
00:11:38and rumored
00:11:38to be under
00:11:39condition for this one
00:11:40be in shape
00:11:41to go 12 rounds
00:11:42if Brown
00:11:43is able to get inside,
00:11:44press the action,
00:11:45and stretch
00:11:46this fight out?
00:11:49Brown's
00:11:50new trainer
00:11:51working with him
00:11:51for the second fight,
00:11:52former light heavyweight
00:11:53star Eddie Mustafa
00:11:54Muhammad,
00:11:55insists that his
00:11:56fighter has
00:11:57the perfect style
00:11:58for beating
00:11:58Diego Corrales,
00:11:59but Corrales
00:12:00gets started
00:12:00with the jab
00:12:01here,
00:12:02and for the moment
00:12:03keeps Brown
00:12:03at distance.
00:12:08Corrales
00:12:09normally doesn't
00:12:10use his height
00:12:12the way you would
00:12:13expect a tall fighter
00:12:15to do.
00:12:16He will stay
00:12:17right in there
00:12:18close
00:12:18and will be willing
00:12:20to exchange,
00:12:21and right now
00:12:21he's peppering
00:12:22Brown
00:12:23with his left hand.
00:12:31Corrales is so
00:12:31laid back
00:12:32in personal
00:12:33conversation.
00:12:34You're startled
00:12:35that he has
00:12:36the intensity
00:12:36to work hard
00:12:37as a fighter
00:12:38in the ring.
00:12:40Right hand
00:12:41upside the head
00:12:42by John Brown.
00:12:43Brown will throw
00:12:43punches
00:12:44from all angles
00:12:48anything to make
00:12:49a dent.
00:13:00Right hand
00:13:01like a laser
00:13:02by Diego Corrales.
00:13:05Brown gets in
00:13:06a little left,
00:13:06Corrales with
00:13:07the left hook.
00:13:24Working well
00:13:25with the left hook
00:13:26is Corrales,
00:13:27and Brown cannot
00:13:28find a way
00:13:29so far
00:13:30to get inside.
00:13:33Keep your head up,
00:13:34okay?
00:13:35Mark Nelson
00:13:36of Minnesota
00:13:37not a referee
00:13:38we've seen
00:13:38before
00:13:39on HBO.
00:13:42But one
00:13:43with a boxing
00:13:43pedigree,
00:13:44his dad
00:13:44was also
00:13:45a boxing
00:13:45official.
00:13:47Punch out.
00:13:48I got it.
00:13:49One punch.
00:13:54Punch out.
00:13:56Brown able
00:13:56to step inside
00:13:57from time to time,
00:13:58but generally
00:13:59limited to one punch
00:14:00when he is able
00:14:01to get inside,
00:14:01and Corrales
00:14:02often able,
00:14:03as you saw there,
00:14:04to hit Brown
00:14:05as he's coming in,
00:14:06particularly
00:14:06with the left hand.
00:14:08Very patient,
00:14:10very intelligent
00:14:11fighter,
00:14:11Miss Corrales.
00:14:13He's already
00:14:14slipped twice.
00:14:16They might just
00:14:17be slips,
00:14:18but given
00:14:19our reports
00:14:20of his condition,
00:14:21you just wonder
00:14:21about it.
00:14:22If Corrales
00:14:23watched the tape
00:14:24of Sugar Shane
00:14:25Mosley's fight
00:14:26with John Brown,
00:14:27he would have seen
00:14:28Mosley effectively
00:14:30finding angles,
00:14:31more so from
00:14:32round to round,
00:14:33until ultimately
00:14:34becoming the first
00:14:34man to knock
00:14:35Brown out.
00:14:35This is an easy fight.
00:14:37You understand
00:14:38what I mean?
00:14:39This is a real
00:14:40easy fight.
00:14:41All we have to do,
00:14:42baby,
00:14:43is punch and
00:14:44step around.
00:14:45Punch and step around.
00:14:46One side
00:14:47and the other side.
00:14:49Try to pick him up.
00:14:50Try to pick him up
00:14:51with the apertures,
00:14:52okay?
00:14:53He can't do it,
00:14:53but he can't do it.
00:14:54He can't do it.
00:14:55He can't do it.
00:14:55Watch the balance
00:14:55in the air.
00:14:56He let your hands go.
00:14:57You see it falling.
00:14:59He's too weak.
00:15:00Let your hands go
00:15:01to the body.
00:15:02When he grabs you,
00:15:03he's tying himself up.
00:15:04Let your hands go
00:15:05to the body.
00:15:06All right?
00:15:06That's all right.
00:15:07Take a drink.
00:15:08Let us go to work.
00:15:10All right?
00:15:11Keep rolling.
00:15:12Get the water here.
00:15:13We got it.
00:15:13Don't worry about it.
00:15:14Here you go.
00:15:14Don't worry about it.
00:15:15Keep rolling inside.
00:15:16Keep doing what you're doing.
00:15:17Keep rolling.
00:15:18All right?
00:15:18You're the man, baby.
00:15:20You heard
00:15:21Eddie Mustafa Muhammad
00:15:22say he's falling
00:15:24because he's weak.
00:15:27Whether that's true
00:15:28or whether he's hoping
00:15:29it's true
00:15:30is what we're here
00:15:31to find out
00:15:32because plainly
00:15:33Corrales
00:15:35is the thoroughbred
00:15:36in this fight
00:15:37against a war horse.
00:15:38Spilled water
00:15:39in the corner of Brown.
00:15:40That's why referee
00:15:40Mark Nelson
00:15:41made them wait
00:15:42for a moment
00:15:43to begin the second round.
00:15:44By CompuBox numbers,
00:15:45round one,
00:15:46a good, well-balanced
00:15:47round for Corrales
00:15:48who landed 24 of 55 punches
00:15:50including 10 of 24 jabs.
00:16:12Corrales beat
00:16:12Roberto Garcia
00:16:13to win this title.
00:16:14He beat an exceptionally
00:16:15well-schooled boxer puncher
00:16:17and brought more thunder
00:16:20than Garcia.
00:16:22Might have been
00:16:23a surprise to some.
00:16:26Garcia who's trained
00:16:28by his father
00:16:28who also trains
00:16:30Fernando Vargas.
00:16:31Blood coming out
00:16:32of the mouth now
00:16:32of John Brown.
00:16:35Partial product
00:16:36of the tattooing
00:16:38he's gotten early on
00:16:39from Corrales' letdown
00:16:40but now Brown
00:16:40begins to get inside
00:16:42and penetrate
00:16:43Corrales' defenses
00:16:44in the way
00:16:45in which he and
00:16:46Denny Mustafa Muhammad
00:16:47have planned
00:16:47for him to do.
00:16:50Corrales would like
00:16:51to throw uppercuts
00:16:52as you can see
00:16:52but Brown is so short
00:16:54I'm not sure
00:16:55you can get to him
00:16:55with an uppercut.
00:17:05Corrales able
00:17:06to punch down
00:17:07at Brown.
00:17:09Be interesting
00:17:09to see if that
00:17:10leverage advantage
00:17:12shows up
00:17:13in power punches
00:17:14later on.
00:17:15Corrales to the body
00:17:16and the head there.
00:17:23Brown's job
00:17:24if he can get inside
00:17:26and he has to work
00:17:27to get there
00:17:27is to throw
00:17:28combinations of punches
00:17:30once he gets
00:17:31into punching range.
00:17:32Corrales is really
00:17:34hurting him
00:17:35with these punches.
00:17:36He's earning stiff
00:17:37hard punches.
00:17:38He's countering
00:17:39so well with the left hand
00:17:40and this Brown comes in.
00:17:41Take some punch.
00:17:42I got it.
00:17:52Hard to hand
00:17:53by Corrales.
00:17:55Good punch.
00:17:58Corrales has been
00:17:59trained in the sport
00:18:00by his stepfather
00:18:01Ray Woods.
00:18:02The man he identifies
00:18:04as truly his
00:18:05spiritual father
00:18:06is by a lot.
00:18:07School father
00:18:07was never a factor
00:18:08in his life.
00:18:11While he had
00:18:12hard times
00:18:13as Larry pointed out
00:18:14he had his
00:18:14rough period
00:18:15as a gang member.
00:18:16Part of his goal
00:18:17now is to make
00:18:18his stepdad proud
00:18:19of him with what
00:18:19he does in the ring.
00:18:27I got it.
00:18:27Don't punch.
00:18:28Here we go.
00:18:28Good job.
00:18:34Another good round
00:18:35for Corrales.
00:18:36It was only
00:18:37six weeks ago
00:18:38October 23
00:18:40when Diego Corrales
00:18:41ascended to the
00:18:42world championship.
00:18:43Not that well known
00:18:44despite his unbeaten
00:18:46record coming in
00:18:46against Garcia.
00:18:48He got the drop
00:18:49on Robert early
00:18:50and used his
00:18:51superior height
00:18:52and leverage
00:18:53to pound away
00:18:54with power punches.
00:18:55You see the blood
00:18:55next to Garcia's
00:18:57right eye.
00:18:57This action
00:18:58from round seven
00:18:59when the fight
00:19:00was stopped
00:19:00in favor of Corrales
00:19:02a TKO victory
00:19:03against a quality
00:19:05champion fighter.
00:19:07And one thing
00:19:08Corrales has done
00:19:08as you can see
00:19:09since then
00:19:10is to grow
00:19:11his hair back.
00:19:19Another outstanding
00:19:21round via
00:19:22CompuBox numbers
00:19:22for Corrales.
00:19:24This fight
00:19:25is for the
00:19:26junior light
00:19:27A version
00:19:28of the junior
00:19:29lightweight title.
00:19:30That's 130 pounds
00:19:32and Corrales
00:19:33has come in here
00:19:34at 148
00:19:35which is
00:19:37junior middleweight.
00:19:39He acknowledged
00:19:40to us yesterday
00:19:41that he wouldn't
00:19:42be surprised
00:19:42if at some point
00:19:43in his career
00:19:44he fights
00:19:44as a welterweight
00:19:4517 pounds
00:19:46up the scale
00:19:47from where
00:19:48he's fighting
00:19:48right now.
00:19:49Of course
00:19:50the biggest name
00:19:50in the 130 pound
00:19:51division
00:19:52is Floyd Mayweather
00:19:53junior.
00:19:54Brown with a scorching
00:19:56right hand
00:19:56up the side
00:19:57of Corrales' head
00:19:58but Corrales
00:19:59unfazed
00:20:00sticks with his
00:20:01structure
00:20:01firing the jab
00:20:02he landed
00:20:0319 of 31
00:20:03jabs in the last round.
00:20:05And a good
00:20:06one-two combination
00:20:07startles Don Brown.
00:20:11I think if he gets
00:20:12away from him
00:20:13Brown will just
00:20:13fall down.
00:20:16But he can get
00:20:17a little excited
00:20:17there.
00:20:18Let's see if he
00:20:19can, if he has
00:20:20the cool
00:20:22to deliberately
00:20:22dispatch Brown
00:20:24or whether Brown
00:20:25has just
00:20:26already
00:20:27revived himself.
00:20:29Quick!
00:20:29I got it!
00:20:30No, no, no punch!
00:20:32Brown has such
00:20:33thick legs
00:20:34and good
00:20:34balance.
00:20:35He's more
00:20:36startled than
00:20:37anybody when he
00:20:37gets wobbled
00:20:38like that
00:20:38but it was a
00:20:39vicious and
00:20:40perfectly thrown
00:20:41one-two.
00:20:46Right uppercut
00:20:47lands for
00:20:48Corrales.
00:20:49Left hook!
00:20:50Accurate
00:20:51punching by
00:20:52Diego Corrales.
00:20:59Now Brown is
00:21:00managing to sort
00:21:01of roughhouse
00:21:02his way
00:21:02out of trouble
00:21:03here.
00:21:06And Corrales
00:21:07will go back
00:21:07to work
00:21:08and look
00:21:08for another
00:21:08opportunity.
00:21:12Keep your head
00:21:13up.
00:21:15Keep your head
00:21:17up, baby.
00:21:20Straight right
00:21:21hand lands
00:21:22for Brown.
00:21:23And he gets
00:21:24in a counter
00:21:24inside as
00:21:25Corrales reaches
00:21:26and now Brown
00:21:27starting to punch
00:21:28more accurately
00:21:29as Corrales
00:21:31commits a little
00:21:31bit, looking
00:21:32to land
00:21:32more damaging
00:21:34punches.
00:21:34And there's
00:21:34a straight
00:21:35right hand
00:21:35flush on
00:21:36the face
00:21:37of John
00:21:37Brown.
00:21:38And John
00:21:38Brown is
00:21:39about as
00:21:39tough as
00:21:40a fighter
00:21:40can be
00:21:40as wincing
00:21:41when he
00:21:42gets hit
00:21:42with some
00:21:43of those
00:21:43shots.
00:21:47With that
00:21:48willowy
00:21:48upper body,
00:21:49Corrales
00:21:50doesn't have
00:21:50the look
00:21:51of a power
00:21:51puncher,
00:21:52but he
00:21:52has good
00:21:53balance
00:21:53and leverage
00:21:54on his punches.
00:21:55One of those
00:21:56tall, skinny
00:21:57guys who
00:21:57somehow
00:21:58musters
00:21:59power
00:22:03by great
00:22:04technique.
00:22:05Exactly.
00:22:09balance, leverage,
00:22:11timing, all
00:22:12of those
00:22:13factors probably
00:22:14more critical
00:22:14in the development
00:22:16of punching
00:22:16power than the
00:22:17muscles in
00:22:18your arms
00:22:19or your back.
00:22:20power.
00:22:2410 seconds.
00:22:27John Brown
00:22:28trying to fight
00:22:28back round
00:22:29three has
00:22:29been a big
00:22:30one for
00:22:31Diego
00:22:32Corrales
00:22:32who scores
00:22:33the knockdown
00:22:34and seems to
00:22:35have taken
00:22:35early command
00:22:36of the fight
00:22:36on the scorecard.
00:22:40nice and relaxed.
00:22:41Let me get the water.
00:22:43Can I get the water?
00:22:44Nice and relaxed.
00:22:49You okay?
00:22:50Oh yeah.
00:22:50Okay.
00:22:51Keep rolling inside.
00:22:53Keep rolling inside.
00:22:54And when you step out,
00:22:54step back in with a jab.
00:22:56All right?
00:22:57Step back in with a jab.
00:22:58All right?
00:22:59Looking good.
00:23:00Just don't pull out.
00:23:01All right.
00:23:01How many times?
00:23:02Huh?
00:23:02I don't know about it.
00:23:03Okay.
00:23:06Chico, you know
00:23:07when you bend
00:23:08your knees?
00:23:09It's no problem
00:23:09if you want to
00:23:10try to punch me.
00:23:12Here's where
00:23:12Corrales throws
00:23:13a nice little soft jab,
00:23:15a tough,
00:23:16a little bit
00:23:17of a left hook
00:23:18and follows it
00:23:19with a straight
00:23:19right hand.
00:23:20Look at this.
00:23:21Boom.
00:23:22Right there.
00:23:22On the chin.
00:23:26George Foreman
00:23:27would love that
00:23:27because Foreman
00:23:29insists that
00:23:30too many fighters
00:23:30throw too many
00:23:32hard punches
00:23:34that sometimes
00:23:34you have to
00:23:35lighten up
00:23:35to set up
00:23:36the hard ones.
00:23:37So let me correct myself.
00:23:39There was no
00:23:39knockdown
00:23:40in the round
00:23:41and therefore
00:23:42probably not
00:23:43a two-point round.
00:23:45Brown
00:23:47throwing that
00:23:48chopping overhand
00:23:49right.
00:23:51He's landed that
00:23:52a couple of times.
00:23:53Maybe his most
00:23:54damaging blow.
00:23:54Corrales has been
00:23:55accurate with the jab
00:23:57and extra quick
00:23:58with the left hand
00:23:59as Brown
00:24:00has been coming in.
00:24:05By CompuBox numbers
00:24:07in round three,
00:24:08Corrales landed
00:24:0831 out of 78.
00:24:13There you go.
00:24:15There you go.
00:24:37Corrales is a beautiful
00:24:39stylist to watch.
00:24:41and if he comes out
00:24:42of this
00:24:43the way he's looking
00:24:44right now,
00:24:46we have not
00:24:47seen the last
00:24:48of this young man.
00:24:54There he throws
00:24:56a quick lead
00:24:57right hand,
00:24:58something we hadn't
00:24:59seen before.
00:25:00He comes over the top
00:25:01with it again.
00:25:06very quick with the
00:25:07left hand as well
00:25:08as he shows you
00:25:09there.
00:25:11It's been an
00:25:11impressive performance
00:25:12so far for Diego
00:25:14Corrales,
00:25:14who was rumored to be
00:25:15under condition.
00:25:17He had three hours
00:25:17to make weight
00:25:18yesterday,
00:25:19gained 18 pounds,
00:25:2115% of his body
00:25:22weight between the
00:25:23time of the weigh-in
00:25:24yesterday and entering
00:25:25the ring tonight
00:25:26and has been
00:25:27brilliant for the
00:25:29first four rounds
00:25:30here.
00:25:30But he's throwing
00:25:3265 punches a round.
00:25:34So how long can he
00:25:35last at this pace?
00:25:42Brown looking to find
00:25:43some way to get
00:25:44inside without
00:25:45getting tattooed,
00:25:47but he hasn't been
00:25:49able to find it yet.
00:25:52To have a chance
00:25:53to win in the
00:25:53late rounds,
00:25:54Brown will have
00:25:55to make this
00:25:55a war of attrition
00:25:56and accept that
00:25:57he's going to take
00:25:58a lot of leather
00:25:58from Corrales
00:25:59as he's doing
00:26:00right now
00:26:00and try to keep
00:26:01the pressure on
00:26:02in hopes that
00:26:03the taller fighter
00:26:04will win.
00:26:19First of two fights
00:26:20tonight on
00:26:21boxing after dark
00:26:22this one for
00:26:23Diego Corrales'
00:26:24130-pound
00:26:25world championship
00:26:29and still to come
00:26:30in the main event
00:26:31Fernando Vargas
00:26:33of Oxnard,
00:26:34California
00:26:34will be defending
00:26:36his 154-pound crown
00:26:37and attempted punch
00:26:39after the bell
00:26:39by Brown.
00:26:40There's Vargas,
00:26:4221-year-old
00:26:42rising superstar
00:26:44facing what's regarded
00:26:45as a complicated
00:26:47challenge tonight
00:26:48against a slick
00:26:50southpaw named
00:26:51Winky Wright.
00:26:52And of course,
00:26:52Vargas,
00:26:53as Larry Merchant's
00:26:54already pointed out to you,
00:26:55facing problems
00:26:56outside the ring as well,
00:26:57which could be
00:26:58a distraction for him.
00:26:59Relax.
00:27:00Relax.
00:27:08You're looking sweet.
00:27:09You're looking sweet.
00:27:10Just like every day in the gym.
00:27:12Yeah.
00:27:12Yeah.
00:27:14You're picking on his job.
00:27:15Be first and keep your hands up
00:27:17and let him go.
00:27:18Let your hands go.
00:27:19All right?
00:27:20The body cast is right there.
00:27:21He's trying to tie him now.
00:27:23Let's go.
00:27:24Let me go.
00:27:24Come on, you got two hands, baby.
00:27:26Come on.
00:27:26Copy box numbers in round four.
00:27:28Another brilliant round
00:27:28for Corrales by the numbers.
00:27:3033 of 61 overall,
00:27:3122 of 38 jabs.
00:27:33We go now to round five
00:27:35of a scheduled 12.
00:27:36Harold Lederman,
00:27:37how do you have it
00:27:37a third of the way through?
00:27:38Jim, so far it's a no-brainer.
00:27:40One of nothing.
00:27:41Here we go.
00:27:4140 to 36,
00:27:42Diego Corrales.
00:27:43You know, Jim,
00:27:44one of the points we talk about
00:27:45in scoring a fight
00:27:45is ring generalship.
00:27:47You know, a lot of people
00:27:47say there's no such thing.
00:27:48Watch Diego Corrales.
00:27:50He hits you with a double left hook
00:27:52or a double jab,
00:27:52and then he steps to the side.
00:27:54He gives him angles.
00:27:55He steps to the right in front of him.
00:27:56That's why Brown can't hit him.
00:27:57Doubles the left hook,
00:27:58steps to the side.
00:27:59Good ring generalship.
00:28:01Well, I have it four rounds to none,
00:28:02but I made that a two-point round
00:28:05in the third round
00:28:06because I thought
00:28:08that Corrales did so much damage
00:28:10to Brown in that round.
00:28:12So you have it 40 to 35.
00:28:14Yeah.
00:28:15Either way,
00:28:17it's an uphill fight for John Brown
00:28:19who busts Corrales
00:28:20with a left click on the chin.
00:28:21Best punch of the fight
00:28:23so far for Brown.
00:28:27And just almost imperceptibly,
00:28:31you begin to get the vague impression
00:28:34that Corrales might be slowing down.
00:28:36Brown working to the body.
00:28:38Corrales not throwing as many punches now
00:28:40as he was in the earlier rounds.
00:28:46Watch out of there.
00:28:47Great.
00:28:48Go close.
00:28:48I got it.
00:28:55Almost inevitable that Brown would
00:28:57at some point warm to the task.
00:28:58he's willing to risk almost anything
00:29:01to make his presence felt in the fight.
00:29:08Now Corrales starts to pump the jab again
00:29:11and the left hook.
00:29:15But this time he doubles with the left hook
00:29:17and stays right in front of John Brown
00:29:18instead of stepping to the side
00:29:20as Harold Lederman had pointed out.
00:29:23Hey, don't punch.
00:29:24No, no, no.
00:29:24I got it.
00:29:25Yet another potential small sign
00:29:28that Corrales is beginning to tire.
00:29:42John Brown is just so strong,
00:29:45so determined.
00:29:46It's almost not human.
00:29:51Oh, he's different.
00:29:53Back when he was training
00:29:54under a wild eccentric name,
00:29:56Malcolm Perkins,
00:29:57we told you the stories of him
00:29:59living in the woods
00:30:00and using wildly unusual training methods.
00:30:03Here he eats another couple of hard left hands
00:30:06from Corrales
00:30:07and keeps on coming.
00:30:11He did fire that trainer
00:30:14and the others in that corner
00:30:15after the Moseley fight.
00:30:17And now Brown working to the body
00:30:18and backing Corrales up
00:30:19continues to make his first real statement
00:30:22of the fight here in round five.
00:30:24Ten seconds.
00:30:31Time!
00:30:35Interesting round.
00:30:36The sort of round you wonder
00:30:37if Brown gets simply because
00:30:40he did so much better
00:30:41than he did before.
00:30:43Okay, get your hands out.
00:30:44Get your hands out.
00:30:51Chico, don't let him come back to the fight.
00:30:54If you let him come back to the fight,
00:30:55he's free.
00:30:56Don't let him come back to the fight, okay?
00:31:00Don't let him get back into this fight.
00:31:02You're doing good.
00:31:04Okay?
00:31:06He's dead.
00:31:06He's dead now, Jack.
00:31:08Now you want it?
00:31:09Yeah.
00:31:09Let me see.
00:31:10Yeah.
00:31:10Let me see you want it.
00:31:11Come on, do you want it?
00:31:12Yeah.
00:31:12Grab his leg a little bit.
00:31:14Grab his leg a little bit.
00:31:15Grab his leg a little bit.
00:31:16Listen, I got it.
00:31:17Show me you want it now.
00:31:18He's dead.
00:31:19Hit Brown.
00:31:20Take care.
00:31:22Hit Brown.
00:31:22Hit Brown.
00:31:24The end of the round.
00:31:26Good job, guys.
00:31:26Get the water here.
00:31:27Good job.
00:31:28Brown went to town on Corales.
00:31:31And by CompuBox numbers,
00:31:32in that fifth frame,
00:31:34Brown had a 22-15 edge in power shots.
00:31:36First numerical advantage of any kind
00:31:38in the fight for john brown come on step on the middle here come on give me a clean fight
00:31:43and you
00:31:43heard miguel diaz saying to corrales don't let him back into the fight now corrales slips for at least
00:31:52the third time in the fight this time because of moisture on the beer advertisement sign in that
00:31:58corner and that was enough of a fall to shake him up for a second or two and i think
00:32:04also to
00:32:05encourage brown because he believes that he's weak and that he has to fight him tough and keep
00:32:11fighting him and wearing him down and get him in the last three or four rounds
00:32:16hard left hand by brown as he comes in corrales not quite as elusive as he was at the beginning
00:32:24of the fight okay here we go
00:32:32brown still not often able to throw three and four punch combinations when he gets inside
00:32:38and corrales still able to pop him with the left
00:32:42frequently as brown tries to come in corrales there using the left well and stepping away a bit of a
00:32:50welch under the right eye now of corrales
00:32:59and of course if he deemed 18 pounds between last night and today by taking in an awful lot of
00:33:06fluid
00:33:07he might be a little more susceptible to swelling under and around the eyes than would normally be the case
00:33:16in the light of the right eye now of the right eye on the right eye on the right eye
00:33:17on the left hook
00:33:18around another left hook by corrales
00:33:25corrales using superior technique to take back some of the momentum in this round
00:33:31corrales says he hurts his hands in every fight he arrived here yesterday with a markedly swollen knuckle on his
00:33:38right hand
00:33:39In this round, in particular, it begins to look as though he's trying to win the fight with one hand.
00:33:44Good left hand that he just landed on Brown.
00:33:52Corrales kind of pawing with the right hand, but in this round at least not throwing it with authority.
00:33:59Doubling and tripling up with the left hand.
00:34:02But really still dominating John Brown.
00:34:06Because of his superior range, quickness, and technique.
00:34:10It looks like JB on the rocks.
00:34:14Keep your head up, John.
00:34:24Freak, freak, okay.
00:34:25Freak, freak, freak, freak, freak, freak, freak, freak, freak, freak.
00:34:34Time!
00:34:44Boxing After Dark, the HBO telecast where you do see the round card girl.
00:34:50And you're looking at Carmen Palumbo, who is a model from Huntington Beach, California.
00:34:55and has an ongoing promotional relationship with the beer
00:34:59whose logo appears on her singlet.
00:35:05Singlet? I think it's a singlet.
00:35:08Let your hands go, Tom.
00:35:12Come on, you tell me, all right, but you're not doing it.
00:35:14Yes, sir, yes, sir.
00:35:15Let me see you do it. Hey, let me see you do it.
00:35:17I wanted this as much as you.
00:35:18Now go to him, hands up, double, triple, let your hands go.
00:35:22Move your hand.
00:35:23Now throw one punch. Let's go.
00:35:25Second time.
00:35:26Let's finish.
00:35:27Three left.
00:35:29Compuvax punch counting experts tell us that Corrales didn't throw a right-handed punch
00:35:34in the last minute and a half of the preceding round.
00:35:36So we'll watch to see what he does with his right hand here in the seventh round.
00:35:41Corrales did land 25 with 60 punches, mostly throwing the left.
00:35:45Brown only throwing 44 blows in that round.
00:35:53Now Brown trying to work to the body and loading up on a combination for the first time in the
00:35:59fight.
00:36:01Presses Corrales back toward the ropes.
00:36:03And Corrales says, come on, come on.
00:36:06Hoping that Brown will not do what he's now doing, which is getting too close to him.
00:36:11But letting his hands go to create some openings.
00:36:16Now Corrales goes back to throwing the uppercut with the right hand.
00:36:19You saw him throw three or four of them in a short span of time there.
00:36:24So if he's hurt the hand, he's probably just committing himself to ignore it
00:36:28and go ahead and use the weapon.
00:36:31Good right hand inside that time, Jim.
00:36:36Come on, don't hold his left, okay?
00:36:39All right?
00:36:44I got it.
00:36:46We asked Corrales what he would do with the increasing piles of money he'll earn
00:36:50if he's able to hold on to his title and go on to bigger and bigger fights.
00:36:53And he said, I like rides.
00:36:56I'll find some roller coasters.
00:36:58Right to the body, left to the head.
00:37:01John Brown keeps coming.
00:37:09Brown continuing to press the issue.
00:37:11Trying to be a factor in the fight.
00:37:13Quick left hand.
00:37:14Turns Brown's head to the side.
00:37:19Quickly.
00:37:19I got it.
00:37:20It's all right.
00:37:23Corrales is so quick with the left, both the hook and the dead.
00:37:27Here he throws the right hand with commitment.
00:37:29So at least in this round, he's gone back to using the right hand.
00:37:41Right hand lands.
00:37:44Brown seemed unprepared for it.
00:37:46Now John comes back with a three-punch combination of his own.
00:37:51Five feet free against six feet.
00:37:54130-pound weight flex.
00:37:56Both fighters well over 140 as they enter the ring tonight.
00:38:04John Brown keeps saying, come on, come on.
00:38:07I don't know why he has to encourage Corrales.
00:38:09He is coming on.
00:38:25Ten seconds.
00:38:26Obey the bell.
00:38:29Great.
00:38:30I got it.
00:38:30Don't punch.
00:38:31Clean break.
00:38:31Step back.
00:38:34Time.
00:38:35Another decisive round for Diego Corrales.
00:38:39Good fighter.
00:38:40The summer 14.
00:38:42Tune in for another edition of Real Sports with Brian Gumbel.
00:38:44This NFL season, Steve Young, Troy Aikman, and a Bronco, Chris Miller,
00:38:49have all missed time due to concussions.
00:38:51We'll follow Chris Miller as he assesses the risks of returning to action.
00:38:55Also, we'll show how sports trading cards have, in some people's opinion, become a lottery for kids.
00:39:01Real sports where nothing is out of bounds.
00:39:05Okay?
00:39:08Next round, Dale.
00:39:10Don't stand in front of him.
00:39:11Get your combinations.
00:39:12Get off to the side.
00:39:13He can't do it.
00:39:14He can't do it.
00:39:17Give me some water on the balls.
00:39:19Seven rounds out of a Schedule 12 in the book.
00:39:24Move your head, baby.
00:39:25Move your head.
00:39:26Two-handed.
00:39:27Come on.
00:39:27Work with two-handed.
00:39:28Get your head.
00:39:29Let's go.
00:39:30Harold, what's the rule on coming unshaven into the ring to the point of almost having a beard?
00:39:37Okay.
00:39:37Larry, it's very simple.
00:39:39If the beard is long enough to cushion the blows or scratch the opponent, it's too long.
00:39:45Then the commission should make him shave.
00:39:47But generally, the commission won't make him shave unless the opponent complains.
00:39:51So if Brown would have put in a complaint, then the commission would have made a decision whether the beard
00:39:55was too long.
00:39:56But those are the two criteria.
00:39:57Scratch the opponent or cushion the blows.
00:40:01In round seven, I should say, Corrales landed more than half his punches.
00:40:0625 out of 49.
00:40:07Brown only throwing 44 again.
00:40:09The general feeling here is that that's not enough.
00:40:12Brown needs to be throwing 55 or 60 punches around and putting more pressure on Corrales to try to wear
00:40:18the larger man out.
00:40:20It's all right.
00:40:21I got it.
00:40:21Very clean.
00:40:22Good job, guys.
00:40:25Corrales has limited Brown's punching opportunities by raking him with the left hand over and over as Brown has tried
00:40:31to make his approaches.
00:40:37Hand speed on display there for Corrales.
00:40:42Six punches launched before Brown could fire anything in return.
00:40:50It's a Gatling gun against a handgun.
00:40:53Brown once again knocking that looping right hand onto the side of Corrales' head while playing pity pat to the
00:41:02side of the ribcage.
00:41:16That's all right.
00:41:22I don't know.
00:41:24Very clean.
00:41:24I got it.
00:41:30I got it.
00:41:34Lincoln City, Oregon, geographically one of the most beautiful places we've ever been.
00:41:43Yet another casino operated by Native American tribal interests making its mark in the sport of boxing.
00:41:53Maybe we'll be back here.
00:41:54More left-hand work by Corrales.
00:41:57A 1-2 inside.
00:41:59Brown just unable to get off as Diego Corrales showcases his multiple skills.
00:42:14Brown is doing a lot of shucking and jiving and trying his best.
00:42:18It's just not good enough against a younger, more skillful fighter.
00:42:25Ten seconds.
00:42:26Another slashing left hook by Diego Corrales right on the button.
00:42:34Time!
00:42:36Sorry, good job.
00:42:39Good job, John.
00:42:41There's an abrasion on the upper part of the left ear of Corrales, no doubt from those looping right hands
00:42:46by Brown.
00:42:47Now, if you want to be a second-rate fighter, keep on fighting the way you are.
00:42:52Hold us something out right here, man.
00:42:53You know what that?
00:42:54Yeah, I don't.
00:42:54Okay.
00:42:55Hold us something out right here.
00:42:56Keep fighting the way you fight.
00:42:57Always hold this up.
00:42:58Always hold that up.
00:42:59Hands up and go after this punk.
00:43:01All right.
00:43:01Let your hands go.
00:43:03Let your hands go.
00:43:04Cut this nothing.
00:43:05Cut the finish.
00:43:06We don't have nothing in your face.
00:43:14Million dollars.
00:43:15You looking good.
00:43:15Let's keep that side-to-side music.
00:43:17Get your combination.
00:43:18Get off the side.
00:43:19Bunch first.
00:43:19Bunch first, okay?
00:43:21What is this?
00:43:22Give me something to most.
00:43:24More?
00:43:26Bump each.
00:43:27Right here.
00:43:28Second stop.
00:43:29Let me see this.
00:43:30Got you both hands.
00:43:31Both hands.
00:43:32What Eddie Mustafa Muhammad is really saying to John Brown is...
00:43:36Come on.
00:43:37Go out there and make your big effort.
00:43:42If you get knocked out, you get knocked out.
00:43:44But don't be a second-rate fighter just trying to survive.
00:43:50Harold, how do you have it through eight?
00:43:52I tell you, yeah, Sylvester, Jim, I don't think John Brown's won a round yet.
00:43:55I know he came close in a fifth, but even that round, Chico Corrales just bangs him with that double
00:44:00left hook and that hard left jib.
00:44:02Well, quick stop on the left jib, and I don't think...
00:44:05Well, now John Brown's figured out he's got his head in the end of a couple of good ones.
00:44:09This time, Brown busts Corrales with a big right cross.
00:44:13One of his better punches in the fight.
00:44:16Corrales seems unfazed by the blow.
00:44:19Kind of looked over here as if to say, I'm okay.
00:44:21Don't make too much of that.
00:44:23One of the surprising things about Corrales, him being this tall, skinny guy, is how well he takes a punch.
00:44:33At least the punches we've seen him take from Roberto Garcia and John Brown.
00:44:40Exactly right.
00:44:41He doesn't have a thick neck, has the willowy upper body as you see, but seems to shake off big
00:44:47punches with ease.
00:44:48Hard right hand right to the upper body of John Brown.
00:44:52Another one to the side.
00:44:56Resourceful fighting by Corrales as Brown held his left arm.
00:45:00He whacked twice to the body with the right.
00:45:01Now comes back to the body with the left.
00:45:04Suddenly, Corrales focusing on Brown's body.
00:45:08As J.B. continues to try to press in.
00:45:18Cobra-like left hand dominating the fight for D'Angelo Corrales.
00:45:24Here we go.
00:45:41Above the heart, Corrales' tattoo says, pain for love.
00:45:48What was this you told me about?
00:45:50His ex-wife auctioned off his title belt on the internet?
00:45:53Yeah, he had one of those minor title belts.
00:45:59And he hacked it, and she went and hacked it.
00:46:03They're divorced now.
00:46:05It meant a lot to them.
00:46:07It's a minor belt, but as we have learned, these belts cost a few hundred dollars, but emotionally, they're very
00:46:15important to price fighters.
00:46:18And he was kind of devastated by it.
00:46:21He bit $1,000 for the belt himself.
00:46:23Wasn't enough.
00:46:25So here's a new danger of the internet that we had not considered before.
00:46:29Your estranged wife can auction off your title belt.
00:46:38Each Thursday, tune in to the show the pros watch, Inside the NFL.
00:46:43Join up with Len, Nick, Chris, and Jerry.
00:46:47Now let's do it in proper order.
00:46:49Len, Chris, Nick, and Jerry left the right.
00:46:52As they show highlights of last week's game, take the week's first look at Sunday's matchups.
00:46:56And please make sure you note the new Thursday start times for Inside the NFL, 8 p.m. and midnight.
00:47:03Those start times now in effect, Eastern and Pacific.
00:47:08Relax.
00:47:08You're choking me.
00:47:09Relax.
00:47:10Relax.
00:47:10Relax.
00:47:11Relax a little bit.
00:47:12Relax.
00:47:12No, I'm going to have nothing to choke him.
00:47:13Sir, listen to me.
00:47:16Have you ready to listen to me?
00:47:17Let your ass go.
00:47:19I need you to.
00:47:20Show me what kind of man you are.
00:47:22Show me what kind of man you are.
00:47:24Okay?
00:47:24Watch the water, guys.
00:47:26Seconds out.
00:47:28Seconds out.
00:47:29Trainers in both corners trying to whip their steeds through the last quarter of this fight.
00:47:37Meanwhile, you were looking at a CompuBox graphic that shows you in one way what kind of man Corrales is.
00:47:41He's the kind of man who has outjabbed John Brown brilliantly.
00:47:44Now here comes the Brown rally.
00:47:47Brown bursting out of the gate in round number 10, trying to reverse the damage immediately against Corrales.
00:47:54And he landed a couple big punches in that fuselage along the ropes.
00:47:57Don't hold.
00:47:58No more holding.
00:47:59Here we go.
00:47:59Here we go.
00:48:10Every time Brown has seized the momentum momentarily with a flurry like that, Corrales has taken it back with quick,
00:48:18accurate use of his left hand.
00:48:24This is the kind of work Eddie Mustafa Mohammed wanted from John Brown, that's for sure.
00:48:28He got to him, finally.
00:48:32The Eastern Beast.
00:48:54How good would Corrales be if he was in top shape?
00:49:00How well would Corrales do against Floyd Mayweather?
00:49:04I'm already dreaming about this fight.
00:49:18Brown snapping Corrales' head back with the left.
00:49:21And now whipping the right hand again over the top.
00:49:26And again, Corrales gets hit with big punches and is unfazed by them.
00:49:34Brown is just, doesn't hit hard enough.
00:49:38And punching up, he doesn't have the leverage that Corrales has punching down.
00:49:43Well, he's never been a big hitter.
00:49:44He has to out-hustle his opponent.
00:49:47And he's just been out-hit here.
00:49:50Oh, clean left hand.
00:49:52A really stunned Brown for just a moment.
00:49:56And here he comes right back.
00:50:05So both fighters have shown you their ability to take big punches.
00:50:11Neither one is a devastating one-punch threat.
00:50:25Incidentally, as round 10 comes to a close, I get word from our production truck that because of the bad
00:50:32weather here,
00:50:33Roy Jones has not been able to depart from the Portland airport in his helicopter.
00:50:38And in fact, the helicopter has been instructed not to make the attempt to land here.
00:50:44So we're not going to see Roy tonight.
00:50:46We'll see him instead on January 15th.
00:50:51Good night, Roy, wherever you are.
00:50:59Roy Jones has a good performance here by Diego Corrales.
00:51:05Pick the spot and get water like this.
00:51:07Okay, no more.
00:51:08Pick your spots and get off.
00:51:11Throw me some speed in there.
00:51:12Show me that good jab, right?
00:51:14Come on, baby.
00:51:14Take a drink.
00:51:15Nice and a little.
00:51:15Come on, baby.
00:51:16Come on.
00:51:17Show me your jab, John.
00:51:18This is what I'm saying.
00:51:19Show me your jab, right?
00:51:20Come on, baby.
00:51:23Brown's early fuselade in that round.
00:51:26Got him off on the right note.
00:51:33Corrales getting a little bit careless here.
00:51:37In round 10, this is pretty remarkable.
00:51:41It doesn't happen all that often.
00:51:42They both threw 52 punches.
00:51:44They both landed 20 by CompuBox numbers.
00:51:46Jim, so do you think that Roy Jones lost his unified announcing title here tonight by not showing up?
00:51:58No.
00:52:00Because we don't replace him.
00:52:05We approximate him.
00:52:08But his stuff is slightly different than our stuff.
00:52:19Just as George's stuff is different than our stuff, Larry.
00:52:23That's why we love having either or both around.
00:52:29Well, the forecasts of Corrales' demise due to poor conditioning were not accurate.
00:52:39Well, it shows what happens when you're young and foolish, but strong.
00:52:47I mean, when he took three hours to make weight yesterday, everybody around here was saying,
00:52:52oh, this is a setup for Brown.
00:52:54What a great opportunity.
00:52:56Corrales has come out and, by and large, fought the full ten and a half rounds so far.
00:53:07Another whippet left hand stopping Brown in his tracks as he tried to come in.
00:53:13This guy is tremendously accurate and effective with the left hand.
00:53:17The jab, the hook, the uppercut.
00:53:19There's Brown busting Corrales with the left hook.
00:53:22But again, the toilet fighter just shakes off the big punch.
00:53:40Eddie Mustafa Muhammad told us that he knew Corrales well
00:53:44for years of watching him train in Las Vegas with his previous trainer, Kenny Adams.
00:53:50And Eddie said, I don't think he can take pressure.
00:53:53Well, he's handled pressure brilliantly tonight.
00:53:56Now, I would say that Brown's only shot was to invest a lot into a body attack early in the
00:54:05fight,
00:54:06particularly with a fighter who is not supposed to be in top condition.
00:54:10Brown landed a low blow on Corrales, and Corrales didn't even flinch.
00:54:16Takes that punch well, too.
00:54:20And there you saw Corrales grimacing after he landed the right hand to the top of Brown's head.
00:54:24But he has definitely hurt his right hand in this fight.
00:54:28Five seconds of right about it.
00:54:31Yeah.
00:54:33Even if you have good hands, you could bust him up on John Brown's head.
00:54:50Give me some more. Give me some more.
00:54:55Drink it, you could eat.
00:54:57Push out.
00:54:58Water.
00:54:59Now, you got a full clean.
00:55:00You got a full clean.
00:55:01Good job, man.
00:55:01Give me a good clean last round.
00:55:03Touch ball.
00:55:03Let's go to work.
00:55:04Inside this round, Rob.
00:55:05What do you need?
00:55:06Work.
00:55:07Now, let your hand go, John.
00:55:09Let your hand go until you can't go no more.
00:55:11He's done.
00:55:11More water.
00:55:12Give me a big round.
00:55:13Use the catch hand right now.
00:55:15Don't get hit when I'm done.
00:55:16Don't get hit when I'm done tomorrow.
00:55:17Even got three months.
00:55:18Don't get hit when I'm done.
00:55:19Don't get hit when I'm done.
00:55:21Don't get hit when I'm done.
00:55:25Let's go, let's go, let's go.
00:55:32Yeah, you see Corrales grimacing after he just raised the top of the head of John Brown with
00:55:39his right hand.
00:55:41Harold, how do you have it coming to the 12th?
00:55:43Jim, very big for Diego Corrales.
00:55:46One on nine, one hundred, ten rounds to one.
00:55:49Diego Corrales.
00:55:50The only round I thought John Brown really won was the ninth.
00:55:52But he pulled inside, rushed inside like he always does.
00:55:55But the ninth round, he ran to some more good clean right hands.
00:55:58Otherwise, Diego Corrales just nails him on the way in.
00:56:01And this should be a very easy win for Diego Corrales.
00:56:04I agree with you on the right hand.
00:56:05And also, Larry, I think if Diego Corrales did shave, he would have made the way to that
00:56:09earlier.
00:56:15I just hope that Brandon, presumably, if he gets the decision that he doesn't take this
00:56:26as a sign, and he doesn't have to get in shape in the future.
00:56:35And that he only takes it as a sign that he didn't have to get in shape for John Brown.
00:56:39Right.
00:56:40You're going to fight fighters who are 25% better, 50% better than John Brown.
00:56:48Well, logic tells you he's not going to take too many more title defenses on only four weeks' notice.
00:56:55Well, that he certainly has learned.
00:56:59But he got $40,000 for winning the title, and he's getting $140,000 for defending it tonight.
00:57:09And that'll buy a lot of rides.
00:57:13Excellent performance.
00:57:15Once again, Corrales slips and almost goes down.
00:57:18Nothing stops him from punching accurately with the left hand.
00:57:22John Brown still pressing forward.
00:57:25Committed warrior that Brown is.
00:57:28Still trying to do something to make an impression in the fight, but not enough skill and not enough
00:57:34range to deal with Diego Corrales, who is a force in the 130-pound division with that
00:57:40long, lanky body, and the super-quick left hand.
00:57:55Pretty good job of refereeing by young Mark Nelson in his first appearance here on HBO.
00:58:07There was some iffy organizational moments early on the card here, as it appeared that
00:58:12unfamiliar with hosting big events in Box 90, Oregon folks were sort of getting their feet wet,
00:58:17but this has gone smoothly.
00:58:2510 seconds should be an easy win for a deserving young titleist, relatively new to the title scene.
00:58:34130-pound world champion Diego Corrales goes out and shows his stuff against a tough, well-known opponent.
00:59:01The junior lightweight division and the lightweight division has a lot of talent there for Corrales,
00:59:14and Mayweather, Stevie Johnson, the excellent lightweight champion, Angel Manfredi, Joel Casamayor.
00:59:23Joel Casamayor.
00:59:26And, of course, Mayweather Jr.
00:59:28Good for you, guys.
00:59:30So we can look forward to some good match-ups in 2000.
00:59:39And, of course, there's Jesus Chavez down in Mexico, unable to come to the United States to fight.
00:59:47He would love to lure Corrales to come down and fight him.
00:59:53Harold, your final scorecard.
00:59:55Well, Jim, I got an 11-to-1, 119, 109, Diego Corrales, certainly the cleaner more aggressive guy.
01:00:02I mean, not more aggressive, but the cleaner punched him by far.
01:00:05He landed a hell of a lot more punches.
01:00:07And I agree with you on a real good refereeing job by young Mark Nelson.
01:00:11That's what boxing needs good young officials.
01:00:22And they're still gathering the scorecards.
01:00:25And now they're ready.
01:00:26So let's go to Mark Barrow for the official particulars on this decision.
01:00:31Here is the decision of the three judges at ringside.
01:00:36Judge Dennis Ryan scores the bout.
01:00:40116-112.
01:00:41Judge Glenn Hamada scores it 116-112.
01:00:48And Judge William James sees it 117-111.
01:00:54All to the winner by unanimous decision.
01:00:58And still IDF Junior Lightweight Champion of the World, Diego Chico Corrales.
01:01:07Corrales.
01:01:19Final punch that numbers.
01:01:21And you can see that Corrales had a bigger margin here than on the scorecards.
01:01:26landing 116 more, throwing 123 more, landing at a higher connect percentage.
01:01:35Larry, what are all those boos about?
01:01:38Well, I think the good folks from Oregon haven't seen enough top professional prize fighting.
01:01:45And I also think that John Brown is the sort of fighter who sentimentally wins the crowd
01:01:53simply because of the effort he puts into it despite the number of shots he takes.
01:02:00Corrales is a good-looking fighter.
01:02:02Yeah, you have to like him.
01:02:04There are a lot of good young fighters out there.
01:02:06We hope we have room to show them all off next year.
01:02:09All right.
01:02:10We'll look forward to seeing more of him and more of the 130 and 35-pounders, as Larry says, down
01:02:15the road.
01:02:15Meanwhile, coming up in a matter of moments, our main event.
01:02:19And it's going to be Fernando Vargas putting his 154-pound crown on the line against a tricky challenger, Ronald
01:02:26Winky Wright.
01:02:27We'll be back with that one in just a moment.
01:02:29Let's look at some upcoming programs.
01:02:31January 15th, light heavyweight champ Roy Jones takes on Westchester County, New York's David Telesco.
01:02:37The all-world Jones makes an encore New York City appearance fighting at Gotham's newly renovated Radio City Music Hall.
01:02:44Also, thunder-punching Derek Jefferson is back facing heavyweight veteran David Izon.
01:02:49One week later, a boxing-after-dark welterweight doubleheader, Shane Mosley, who looked so good in his first fight at
01:02:55147 pounds,
01:02:57takes on Willie Wise, recent conqueror of Julio Cesar Chavez.
01:03:00Also, young Vernon Forrest makes his HBO debut against always-dangerous Vince Phillips.
01:03:07And December 14th, tune in for another edition of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
01:03:11We'll look at the Colts' Peyton Manning, who in two years has become one of the top quarterbacks in the
01:03:15NFL.
01:03:16Also, we'll show you the improbable saga of Lehigh's Ronald Gene.
01:03:20Found abandoned in Florida, brought up in a series of foster homes, Gene has turned into a college star.
01:03:26Real sports, where nothing is out of bounds.
01:03:31And we bring you back live.
